Instead of one big event which serves as the turning point, this movie spans the entire childhood/adolescence of a boy's life to roll out a very evenly balanced and realistic runthrough of this transition from child to adult. My biggest criticism is that I felt like we weren't as closely involved with the main character's life I might have liked. There was a feeling of distance, as if I was viewing the character from afar. Expand

In development for 10 years and somehow, Boyhood is great. It's rare to have a movie that doesn't have any problems with it. It's just a perfect movie, done in such an authentic way too.

Phenomenal and unforgettable, "Boyhood" is a film like no other, and makes it the best film of 2014.

Boyhood took 12 years to make, which makes the film so unique in many ways, this is a movie directed by Richard Linklater, and stars newcomer Ellar Coltrane, and supporting cast members like Patricia Arquette (who won the best supporting actress Oscar), Ethan Hawke (who was nominated for best supporting actor) and newcomer Lorelei Linklater.

Plot:
The film starts out with Mason Jr. laying down on the ground looking up to the sky, his mother Olivia picks him up from school. Mason Jr. overhears his parents arguing that following evening, he quickly learns that Olivia is moving he and his sister Samantha are moving to Houston so Olivia could attend the University of Houston. From there all the characters slowly age for 12 years, showing each character for approximately 15 minutes each age.

The film shows it had a lot of effort put into it, director Richard Linklater has shown us how childhood could be difficult and to show that it is important to keep up with life. Boyhood proves to be The Godfather of today's film industry, it is easily one of the most thought-out films to date.

Boyhood in my opinion is one of my favorite films of all time, there is always something good about the film, there has been no other film like this one. I very highly recommend watching this one to see how the main character grows up.

But for the cinephile and the patient viewer, "Boyhood" provides a unique viewing experience of singular ambition and veracity and captures the minutiae of adolescence in the 21st century with searing intimacy and an expansive scope. It is, of course, this focus on the mundane that has divided audiences far more than it has divided critics. But "Boyhood" is, at heart, nothing more or less than what it sets out to be: an authentic exploration of growing up. And it accomplishes that with exceptional clarity and honesty. It feels like we viewed it from a young boy's perspective, not the adults behind the camera. As such, there is no defining moment within the film that makes it stand out: the reality of the twelve years it covers on-screen is its defining moment. Shot by shot, it is far from unforgettable but as a whole, it is definitely memorable. At heart, "Boyhood" is an extraordinary way of telling quite an ordinary story. I can't put it any better than that. Expand

Since this is film about growing up, that fact is quite important. BUT, since this is not a documentary, just a fiction piece, we couldn't care less if the kid, teen, young adult, is the same person or not. Who cares. The point is that as narrative story is flat, it lacks depth and character insight ... too much time span, too many broad strokes. It was entertaining, just that. Expand

The fact that the movie is so mundane is part of it's charm. The film does a good job of presenting the beauty in the things that we often take for granted. This is honestly about as natural of a film as they come, nothing feels contrived about it.

I recommend this movie to every American male because of how much they can probably relate to the film, whether their lives are anything like his or not (not to say that females can't enjoy it, as it also follows his sister through her childhood and adolescence). It's not a masterpiece or anything but it's still a very enjoyable movie. Expand

They all end up seeming like love letters to himself. You don't get any insight into how the mother's second and third mates turn out to be failures as men and as husbands -- they're just "bad guys." I guess bad father figures are such a given in movies like this, that as a filmmaker you don't have to lift a finger to make them, what, motivated? "Look -- sensitive young boy. Bad dad. But the movie was frankly too long. It makes us sit through unpleasant or awkward scenes, and then does nothing to reward us, often switching to uninteresting small-talk, such that my brain began to feel like mush after a while. Even though real life is typically that way for many, that doesn't make it good film material. The milestones and aspects of the boy's life should have been hit more concisely. I would love for something like this to be done again, but better. Expand

I admit, this movie was unique because of the time it captured and it was different to see the actual progression of this boy and character. The quality of a good movie makes the viewer feel something, whether it's sadness, shock, fear, when it leaves you wanting more. This movie didn't do that for me. The sister annoyed me in some of her younger scenes and I didn't feel as if there was enough emotion or conflict. Perhaps I missed something others saw, but it's not a movie I would choose to watch again. Expand

It's not the Hollywoodized mumbo jumbo that people fawn over as an escape from their stressful lives or failed dreams. This movie explores stressful lives and failed dreams, so don't watch it if you're out for an 'escape'. The acting was so real I have trouble convincing myself it's not a true story. It is a true story for so many families around the world. It just resonated so much with me. It's honest, heart wrenching, and real. That's why I loved it. Nothing's hyperbolized or detracted so that it'll be a Hollywood sensation. It's an honest look at a boy's life as he grows up in a less than ideal family situation. It explores what exactly life is, tackles questions like 'What's the point of it all?", and "Is there real magic, like Elves?". It pulled me in completely and by the end I felt like I never wanted it to stop. No movie has ever made me feel the way this one has. It's made me grateful and it's made me want to go out and make a difference in my own little way. Thank you to the actors, producers, and crew of this movie. Thank you to Richard Linklater, for making a difference in the world of film. Expand

This is cinematic realism at its absolute finest. Everything about it, the characters, their conversations, and their mundane everyday experiences are captured in a way that mimics real life like no other film I've ever seen, not to mention watching the characters literally grow up before your eyes is surreal and deeply fascinating. This movie is basically just a bunch of scenes documenting this kid's life, some of which will make you laugh, make you sad, make you nostalgic, make you hopeful, etc. There really is no overarching plot, but nonetheless, I feel like I could have sat through another 3 hours of this movie! The acting is also some of the most natural and effortless I've ever seen. The characters seem strangely familiar in everything they say and do, which I suppose is the point. Overall, Boyhood leaves you feeling satisfied and somewhat in awe at how incredible our lives are once you put things into perspective. Expand

I still thought it was a good movie that require some effort and i appreciate that. I like it as a journey of growing up with some relatable things and nostalgic events, but other than that it was EXTREMELY FLAWED. A lot of things that happened through the first half and second half were really underdeveloped and If you think about it, it doesn't make sense and you end up seeing it as a mess. The screenplay was good but some parts of it were really forced and written in a poor and unfocused way just to give sense to the scenes. I was expecting the script to be as amazing as the one in the "Before trilogy" (directed by Linklater), but it wasn't that good. If the screenplay was like "Before Sunset" the movie would be an epic masterpiece, but sadly it wasn't. It is really sad, because in both movies (Boyhood and Before Sunset) there is a huge dependence on the script and that's because it doesn't happen that much on the story of both films. Before Sunset worked really great but Boyhood not so much. I was entertained by it and it's concept was interesting, but it is difficult for me to see it as one of the best movies of 2014. Expand

I'm curious what the people who claim that the reviews are solely based on the 12 years concept think about Linklater's Before series. Those movies were not filmed over 12 years but are written very similarly to Boyhood and were extremely well received. The truth is that the 12 years adds a real and compelling vibe to an already well written movie. This movie is about how life is made up of little, meaningless moments that go by before we even know it. Every scene is so carefully made, as to capture every detail as realistically and compellingly as possible. The movie is simultaneously beautifully nostalgic, and utterly depressing. I've watched it three times and I can't wait to watch it again. Expand

This is a movie that started back in the summer 2002. So that mean's you get to see a young Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, and as the movie goes along you get to see them age and how much there truly change. Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job as there characters. The writing in the movie is one of the best writing that I have ever seen in a while. Ellar Coltrane the main star of the film started off like child actors normally start off, a bit shallow and just there, but when got the teenager he did got better a acting and he was good in the movie. It's not a re-watchable if I have to be honest. But it's still outstanding film.

These are the words that came to mind at the end of this film. It's achievement lies not only with the gripping performances, but for what it represents for the future of cinema. It goes beyond our expectations and fulfils a most desired wish-it transcends time, it became immortal.
One can find himself trapped within it, long after the movie has ended, because we all have had a moment that relates perfectly to us in the film. For me, it was the launch of the Harry Potter book, yes I was the one kid that staid in line for hours to get a copy of that book!
It deserved more than it has gotten in terms of awards, for it is, at the end of the day, a masterpiece that took 12 years in the making.

Other than that, it doesn't have much to recommend it unless you enjoy teenage angst. I have male children; I know what they think and do during pre-adolescence, adolescence and post-adolescence. Let's face it, men aren't complicated creatures whether they're children or adults. Watching 2 hours and 46 minutes of it was pure torture. I'm only giving it a 4 because Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke are great. Although, I've seen Patricia do better in "Medium". Don't waste your money on this film. Expand

Boyhood through simplicity achieved something that decades of movies didnt: give an unpretentious opinion about humanity and life.
Congratulations and thank you for this awesome movie.

Just because something took 12 years to film doesn't mean it will be good or original. Put the same story in film that was made in about a month, and it would be average. That doesn't make it terrible, but it is decent to say the least.

It's as disjointed a film as you would expect from the way it was filmed over such a long period, it doesn't struggle to be coherent because there's absolutely no challenge in that respect for it to do so. There's nothing artful about the way the film is put together, it's a sequence of moments, which makes sense if you think about the last scene, a scene which tries to make this profound link, like a series of moments with nothing really changing but it feels flat, and again maybe that is the point, that it should feel flat and banal because that's more realistic but the film also tries to be something else by having several linking scenes with sombre indie songs playing in the background, the songs are so tacked on and don't reflect the mood well at all. Whether it's his character or just bad acting, Mason is underwhelming, and so is his sister through most of the film, funnily enough they both seem to act better as young kids, but as they grow the cracks start to show in the performances, I get they have been directed to act as naturally and realistically as possible but it comes across as just awkward bad acting in some scenes, which should have been cut or edited better, the editing was the worst thing about the film, far too many pointless cuts and lingering shots that do nothing, one sweeping shot is so bad it sticks out like a sore thumb. The editing was poor in terms of the sequence of moments as well, it was a basic timeline, but it was put together with no flair. In my opinion the best thing about the film was Patricia Arquette and her character, she was a very realistic mother, and the nuance to her performance reminded me of my own mom, I thought her performance was the best in the film, Ethan Hawke was good as well, and he absolutely carries the scenes with the kids. I don't think it should be viewed as groundbreaking just because ageing happens to the characters, it should be judged as just another film, I was ready to enjoy this film, and I found it relatively enjoyable, and it wasn't that the pacing was too slow, just that it felt monotonous, the film gets better, it has peaks and troughs. Maybe i'm missing the profundity of the understated realism that is the films essence, but it would feel more profound for me if i looked through some of my own family photographs and reminisced, the sentiment was lost on me, I didn't feel it but maybe that's because i have a cold stone for a heart Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, I am an avid movie fanatic. I love pretty much all movies, I haven't a specific genre or preference when it comes to film. I had heard much about "Boyhood," and since the Oscars had "snubbed" it, I desperately wanted to see it (in no small part to critics claiming that this is the "Pulp Fiction" of the Oscars...one of my favorite films). I expected to love it. I expected to walk away from "Boyhood" with a respect for Linklater and Arquette. I expected to have been moved. None of this happened. I have since read that this film is "boring." I am so seldom bored that the thought is almost foreign to me. No longer. Boring doesn't even begin to describe it. It is stale and trite. Yeah, I said trite. Doesn't anyone remember "Before Sunrise?" Linklater is having the exact same conversation he had in that film only now it's Mason having it with his girlfriend in Texas instead of Ethan Hawke having it in Paris. Please, someone give Richard a copy of "Being and Time" so that we don't need to suffer his existential crisis again. The ending lines are precious. "I thought there'd be more," bemoans Olivia. Gimme a break. How many times have we heard *that*? And the icing on the cake, Mason, high with his new college buddies..."You know how you're supposed to seize the moment...? Maybe the moment is supposed to seize you." Wow. Now there are some pearls right there. I get it...he's attempting to explore the "now" we all chase...but anyone who has taken philosophy 101 has thought about this. It's adolescent drivel. He's attempting to explore the relationship of time to the audience. Whatever. There are better ways in which to do that, I'm sure. What they are, I have no idea...I'm not a film maker. But this film was such a massive disappointment, I really cannot be bothered to try to come up with a something better. I hated the characters, for none of them were properly developed. Arquette's performance was dry at best. I thought she was almost as painful to watch as the actor playing Mason. So, what you end up with is a plotless film, with no character development, and an aging director desperately chasing this moment he purports should be chasing him. It's a catastrophically bad film. It's symptomatic of a society so muddled with narcissism that we are romanticizing simplicity to a fault. Yeah. Don't waste your time. Expand

I agree with all the comments that this was an ambitious project. Twelve years to make a movie is, if nothing else, an exercise in patience. I think it is an admirable accomplishment with the best of intentions. However, all the effort provided absolutely zero benefit to the lackluster story. The story started bad, then it got worse. I can see no other reason for all the positive reviews accept for the fact that it was such an ambitious project. All the ambition in the world did not make the product any good. Using the same actors as the children aged did not add any value to the movie. What was the point? It was just a bad story. What makes in more annoying is that they had twelve years to put together a good movie and this is what we got!? I have nothing against Patricia Arquette but her performance was certainly not worthy of any specific notoriety. The only reason she got an oscar was for commitment to the film but certainly not for her performance. It has been a long time since I have been mad that I wasted time on a movie but today, I see my streak is over. I am flat out pissed that I wasted my time on this movie. The film's concept is part of the appeal, and helps make the film feel more genuine.

All in all, Boyhood was a great film, possibly the best of 2014 in my opinion, although the Oscars would suggest otherwise.

Sure, many of the events here have been depicted before and the whole coming of age thing has been done to death, but man, it has never been done like this before. Sporting a killer soundtrack to guide us as we trek through Mason Jr's formative years, Boyhood is a slice of life film like never before. Things happen for no reason, things come and go, and things fall apart out of thin air, just like real life. This film is extraordinary for many reasons, one of which has to be the way it was filmed. You do not see films made over the course of 12 years and to see this only helps it be all more powerful. As we grow up with the actors throughout the film, you truly feel like you are almost watching a documentary on these people's lives, which is an incredible feeling .In addition, it just felt unique and was amazing to watch unfold. In addition, it does not try to create drama. Life is not perfect and things happen randomly, people drift off for no reason at all and you have no idea why and you never see them again. This film is exactly like that and makes no attempts to "Hollywood" things up by tying up all the loose ends, instead it leaves them as is. Plus, one cannot forget that this isn't their whole story; this is only a 12 year period in their lives. Who knows where their stories will end up? The writing is incredible, as is the direction from Richard Linklater, who is a true visionary and has undoubtedly created his magnum opus with this project. The acting from Ellar Coltrane, Patrica Arquette, Ethan Hawke, and the only cast, is incredible. The chemistry and familiar relationships felt so real and authentic. The situations rang true and ultimately made this one feel as though the most authentic coming of age film I have ever seen. There were no one dimensional characters and everyone had a story to tell, just like in real life.

Above all though, I have to say one of the best parts of this film has to be the quotes, in particular one that stood out to me, "I thought there'd be more." Just impeccable writing that manages to sum up what it is to be at that point so well, although I personally have not gotten there, I can sympathize with that line and its meaning. Ultimately, Boyhood deserves the accolades bestowed upon it and is one of the best films of 2014 and will undoubtedly be hailed as a film for the ages. Wow.

There's one dramatic scene, which doesn't even tie into any kind of overarching plot or theme or development, and one decent performance (Hawke). The movie is filmed such that the main character is filmed at age six and is continuously filmed over a 12 year span until he is 18. A seemingly endearing concept however is ruined by the fact that him and his family are entirely unremarkable and they do absolutely nothing remarkable throughout the film. There is no engaging story arc, difficulty to overcome or goal to achieve. For anyone who has lived a life of their own, this film has nothing to offer, no insights or revelations and certainly no entertainment. Certainly there is a reason why films aren't normally made about normal people living normal lives, it's because we live those everyday and don't need a theater or disc to see it. The acting is poor as well. Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette do a fantastic job, but the acting roles especially from the children are inconsistent and forced. Much of the dialogue is awkward and out of touch with how youth used to talk as well. With one liner 90s clichés scattered throughout. It's a subtly racist film as well. Despite being set in Texas, the one and only Hispanic character is first seen doing manual labor. This movie does have one notable aspect: Because this movie is nearly three hours and nothing notable happens at any point, it begins to drag unrelentingly about an hour and a half in. This movie is however fascinating in one aspect: A movie can be made about unremarkable white people doing absolutely nothing remarkable for nearly three hours and still receive near unanimous praise, critical success and an Academy Award nomination. Bravo white people, even the most unexceptional of you are truly are amazing. Expand

It was like watching a liberal campaigning for office bringing up just about every liberal hot topic to push down the throats of its viewers. As expected, because of this the liberal media and Hollywood will love this movie, hence all the Oscar nominations.

It would be nice to see a movie that had no political overtones (liberal or conservative) to it be nominated once in a while, but that is not what drives Hollywood.

With that being said, it was a brilliant idea to film these characters over an 11-12 year period. There was just no storyline and it ended making you fell like you were waiting for there to be some type of conclusion and/or wondering if you missed something. After watching the movie a 2nd time, I realized I did not miss anything, because there was nothing to miss. There was no point to this movie except for watching the characters grow up physically. A complete waste of time-twice!

That being said, it is hard to predict how every other spectator would precept it and from what angle. But one thing, I am quite certain of, is that it dragged too much for what could be much shorted and more eventful tale. The ending was kind of charming though.

It is a good luck at the reality of parenting and childhood these days, the struggles that fall on both sides, but there are some parts that don't seem to really go anywhere. The movie told about real life and there wasn't too much drama or unexpected life changes. Because the same guy acted the main character for the whole movie, I kind of felt like I knew that guy and I felt little protection of the desire for him. The reason for giving this movie only 7 out of 10 is that it was a bit long and every now and then i felt myself little bored. Probably because I ate all the popcorn at the beginning of the movie lol. But overall, it was a nice package filled with dialogue and funny moments between family. The most memorable moments were the tent tours between father and son spiced with marshmallows and cream crackers. Expand

If this movie were to be made within a 1 or 2 year span I truthfully can say it would not have the same impact that it does. A nostalgia filled film following a young boy and his journey through boyhood. Engaging to the current teenage generation and empathetically moving to the generations before us that understand what it is like to be a parent and have your child's young years pass by quickly. The maturity and growth of the actors is both phenomenal and honest. It is a true film that manipulates our feelings of longing, love, and growing up. The amount of commitment to these roles and this movie is astonishing and awe-inspiring. Though not the most entertaining of films, it does seem to be one of the most intriguing of films ever made. It is a nostalgic, emotional ride that takes you through life's wonders of growing up: awkwardness, insecurity, first love, puberty, change, and becoming an independent being. All things we go through as a child and as a human being. So prepare yourself, for this honest, understanding, and emotionally driven film. Expand

With a 2 hours 45 minute run time, the film is much too long. I can only surmise that director Richard Linklater became so personally invested in the film that he was unable to leave anything on the cutting room floor.

The film is a story is about the life of an adolescent boy, Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and his slightly older sister, Samantha (Lorelei Linklater). You get to watch them grow up from about age 6 until they leave home for college. Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke play their divorced parents.

Throughout his boyhood, Mason is subdued and reserved. There are no milestones in his life to celebrate, no tragedies to mourn, no joyous moments, no outbursts of anger; just long periods of monotonous existence. His life is like that of a rubber duck on a river. He simply goes where the river of life takes him. The currents and eddies periodically trap him and then take him further downstream. I waited in anticipation for fate to intervene, for tragedy to strike, for something - anything - to happen! Instead, watching Mason evolve into an adult was sort of like watching paint dry.

The lives of Mom, Dad and Sister are equally unsatisfying to watch. Samantha has a bigger, naturally ebullient personality, than her brother but the film focuses almost exclusively on Mason and we end up knowing almost nothing about her life.

Dad cares about his kids but is a late bloomer and, at least initially, is pretty rough around the edges when it comes to parenting. He sees his kids on weekends, tries hard to engage them in conversation, and gives them the kind of talks that you would expect from a Dad in a movie like Sixteen Candles. The speeches come across as odd because Dad lives with a professional musician in a dirty apartment complete with empty beer bottles, cigarette butts and a little drug paraphernalia. Thus, his words are completely incongruent with the life that he lives.

Mom’s life is like a twisted version of Ground Hog Day. She goes back to college, begins dating her professor and ends up marrying him. Over time he becomes an angry alcoholic. Mom leaves him and moves the kids to another part of Texas. Mom then becomes a community college professor, starts dating one of her students, and ends up marrying him. Rinse and repeat. Ultimately, Mom ends up alone and, as Mason leaves for college, wonders if this is all that life has to offer.

Minutes after Mason arrives at college he meet a girl, takes a mind altering drug, goes on a hike, watches the sun set, and realizes that he is happy. The ending is a lot like nouvelle cuisine at a highly popular restaurant: The wait is too long and what arrives on the plate is too little to be truly enjoyable.

This was the most boring movie I have ever watched. I cannot understand what the hype is all about.

The only interesting scene in the movie is the one where the restaurant manager thanked the mother for encouraging him to go to college.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is completely, utterly, boring. There's literally nothing that happens. It's about a boy living an extremely dull and cliched life. There's virtually no drama that happens throughout the entire movie, and the drama that is presented is still quite listless and unimportant. In other words, this movie is about as plot-less as a movie can get. It took twelve years to film, and yet, those years span by quickly and dully, one event after the other, with no point or order, just chaotic and random. But what makes the movie so dull was the main character.

In the movie, there is nothing bad happens to the main character, nothing to make you connect with him. There's nothing life changing. In fact, the three biggest "bad" things that happen to him are that his mother can't find "the right guy" (after divorcing his father, she marries her college professor who turns out to become a drunk, and then she marries one of her own college students, who turns out to have mental stability problems due to him serving in the military; both of which she ends up divorcing as well), and his father sells the car that he had thought would be his when he turned sixteen, and his girlfriend cheated on him, which resulted in their relationship ending. Other than this, nothing happens. He literally goes through life showing as little emotion as possible, just floating by, as though he was in a coma, or constantly tired.

So, finally, after two hours and thirty mintutes, you come towards the end of the movie. The "boy" is now an adult who has graduated high school and who is going to be going to college. Upon him packing his last things, his mother breaks down saying that there's nothing more that is going to happen with her life. That her life has just been a series of events: her having her children, her divorcing her husband, her raising her children, her marrying a man, divorcing him, raising her kids some more, marring her college student just to divorce him as well, and finally, her sending first her daughter to college, and then her son. Then she concludes with saying that what comes next is, "[her] funeral." To this, the boy, replies that she's off by forty years, "or something." Then she says that, "[she] expected there to be more." The movie then cuts to him driving on the road to college.

When he finally arrives at college, he meets his new roommate, who is friendly and invites him to go hiking with his girlfriend and another friend (who is also a girl). When Mason (the main character) sees that she's pretty, he decides that he'll go. Before he goes, his new roommate hands him a hallucinatory mushroom and says that by the time they reach the mountains, it will have an effect. It then fast forwards to them walking to the mountains and we see that Mason and the new girl are getting along very well. Then it cuts to them sitting and chatting. Across the distance, he sees his roommate yelling into the wind, and he begins to talk to this new girl, named Nicole, about how we need to, "seize the moment." Nicole replies with saying, "I think moments seize us," and it shows Mason thinking for a moment, and then it cuts to the end credits.

I think what bothered me the most about the film was the fact that, despite it having no order, there was a point, but it wasn't that great of one. Mason, who lived his entire boring life on coasting mode is finally forced to see that if he keeps doing this, he will end up like his mom––just living, but not truly alive in the sense of being satisfied with life. The point is that we need to let the moments seize us, and we need to live. Yet, what made this theme so irrelevant was the fact that there was hardly a moment for him to have ever seized! There was no bad, barely any good, nothing that would have made is life have any significant meaning. By the end of the movie, you ask yourself, "Is my life really this boring?" And do you know what my answer was? "No, there's more drama in mine."

In conclusion, if you want to see a long movie that drags on and on about a boy just living his life, then you'll love this movie. Even though it had a theme presented at the end, in my opinion, it just wasn't enough to save the movie overall. It is sad really, because it was such an ambitious project. But by creating such a dull life where nothing happens, I feel that they wasted those twelve years, because in all actuality, most people's lives are far more chaotic and show signs of actual character development due to things that happen, both good and bad, in their lives. That's what this movie failed to do: deliver on experiences that are worth watching. What's left instead is dull, listlessness that fails to satisfy someone who wanted to be entertained. I wanted to see sadness, hopelessness, as well as extreme elation and happiness. To see someone grow into a great person despite and because of circumstances. What I got was boy coasting his entire life though a movie that has a run time far too long.

It offers a lot to the viewer, but it also demands quite an effort to be fully comprehended. Full of a variety of cultural references and a very specific zeitgeist atmosphere, this movie is a profound and aesthetically perfect epic dedicated to life itself.

Linklater's hyperrealism is something that contributes to the magic of the film itself. It is not a movie, it is a story about a boy, his development inside the boiling cauldron we all call life, his struggles, both external and internal and, ultimately, his victory over life itself as MJ comes out stronger and more mature. You never actually perceive it to be a movie, rather a story of a boy you're witnessing first hand, either as a direct participant or a third-person observer, but always within the story itself, never distancing yourself back to the sofa or seat you're actually in. All the actors are brilliantly adapted to their roles, never over-acting or showing signs of egoistical vanity, dedicated to both the idea of the film itself and the story of Mason Evans, Jr., the main protagonist of the film itself.

Finally, the aesthetics of the film is stunning. The technical details, a well-made choice of scenery and moment, the authentic presentation of a human emotion that just flows through you via the screen like you're actually there and captures you fully, forcing you to relieve that same emotion, via nostalgia or anything else, within yourself - all of that and much more contributes to that specific aesthetic moment that is 'Boyhood'. Because, it really is just a moment, a moment of 12 years compressed into three hours, but so rich and fantastic that it is much more than just a cinematic experience, much more than just a movie.

'Boyhood' is an absolute master-piece, a work of art in every sense of the work, elevating the often pompous and overly self-worthy genre of art films and elevating the cinematic experience as a whole. A story that must be seen, carefully, remembered and loved. It reached the status of a classic immediately, surely to be remembered in history and is, certainly, one of the best movies ever made and one of the best stories ever told.

If you can appreciate quiet, intimate, introspective character studies, like 'Lost in Translation,' 'The Kids Are All Right,' or Linklater's own 'Before' trilogy, then you'll probably find a lot to love in 'Boyhood.' If those kinds of movies aren't your cup of tea, then likely neither will this movie. Expand

The characters were unlikable (and some were downright caricatures) and the dialogue was plodding and pointless. There was no plot or arc or denouement. Honestly, this may be the worst film I've ever spent time watching. 45 minutes in I felt like the movie had staggered on for hours. By the time it was over, I felt like watching the movie had taken 12 years.

We all have friends growing up who we drift apart from. Over the course of this movie, I went from really enjoying spending time with young Mason, to cringing while watching an older Mason who I could never even stand to be in a room with.

Not everyone will have this reaction, but this guy's personality when he gets older is insufferable to the point that I wish I could slap him. As a boy, his experiences are some that any boy/man could relate to. As a young adult, he becomes smug and whiney and almost regressed to a teenage state.

That being said, this was a very ambitious project by Linklater with a lot of really great material early on, and a couple of great performances by Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke. During the actual "Boyhood" segment of the movie, I felt like I could watch it all day. From high school on I continued watching because I felt I had to having invested so much time in it.

Phenomenal

When you think back to Slackers you remember how easy that movie flowed. How comfortably it drifted. Just go with it. Let it happen, live in the moment. Then there's the Before trilogy which again seemed effortless and free-flowing yet constructed with so much care that you knew this filmmaker was not only unusual, but acutely human. That he cherished experience and learning and submitted to the eternal present, surrendering to and tinkering with fate, while tending to the perpetually immediate situation with enormous sensitivity and regard.

But nothing could prepare you for Boyhood. You can't overstate the fact that it's a grand free-flowing time-lapse experiment and that most of the actors--no not actors, not performers--most of the people were cast when the central figure was a very young boy, looking up at the sky, having no idea how his future would unfold. The world might be a stage but Richard Linkater is not omnipotent. As a definitive work-in-progress, a daring collaboration with fate and destiny, who could really know how the boy's script was going to turn out, and how the wide array of voices in his life would shape him as he stumbles toward adulthood? Only a true sure-footed and fluid filmmaker, an authentic disarming innovator could raise this baby with as much beauty and wisdom. Dazed and Confused? Make room for Clear and Composed.

Hear the lamb howl. Boyhood is a daring experimental wolf wrapped in conventional wool. Needing to be shot chronologically, the linear time-line and 12-year shooting schedule called for a fresh and original approach to crafting a movie. If something went wrong during the many long gaps in production, say, if an actor suddenly became unavailable, or some drastic circumstance threatened to break the continuity of the boy and his family's life, there's no going back to re-shoot. No relying on special effects make-up or casting young and old versions of a character. The faith invested in this concept and the delicate handling of it's execution is a marvel to witness, blooming before our eyes.

Patricia Arquette was growing up too. Aging faster than Ellar Coltrane, it appeared. This movie defies breaking up into a series of disjointed, episodic fragments. And Arquette stitches together an admirable and dedicated performance as the ubiquitous maternal defender who struggles to keep herself and her family from falling apart. Because of the blur between fiction and reality, between drama and documentary, and because of the way Linklater is able to nurture the process and allow his films to take on a life of their own, Arquette may not be acting on set any more than she has to in real life. A slight adjustment in perspective and this movie could have been called Motherhood.

The key is that it's a more contemplative kind, similar to a documentary, there is nothing to reflect. Richard Linklater brings this film and tells everyone, this is life. The level of reality that reach the story is shocking, takes the viewer to his own childhood, having two characters to identify with, Mason for men and Samantha for women; and for parents there is Olivia and Mason Sr., make your choice. Maybe not with the best plot, not clever script and simple performances (except for Patricia Arquette, who is absolutely breathtaking), but hey that's how it's life. What is surely a success is the song Hero, fits perfect with the movie. Expand

It may not be the most exciting film to watch, or the most interesting, but as i found with the film Inside Llyewn Davis it is a nice and pleasant viewing experience. And that's what this film is: an experience. The 12 years of filming works meticulously well and really helps develop the characters as real people. The film is about growing up, and the reason the message and work comes across so well is because that's literally what happens: they grow up. Other films that try this with different actors don't really work and you find them a little too boring or sentimental, but this film works with the growing up mechanic so well that you can really relate to the film even if you don't follow a life like the one portrayed in the film. I must say the acting is pretty solid pretty much from the get go, but the character Sam i found a little bit obvious as not being a real person. In brief.
Want to see a great film about boyhood? See This Boy's Life.
Want to see Ethan Hawke's best? See Predestination.
Want to save 3 hours? Skip Boyhood.

I loved Before Sunset, Sunrise, and Midnight. But Boyhood is not good.

DO NOT BELIEVE THE HYPE.

Boyhood gets attention for the gimmick of being filmed sporadically over 12 years, so you get to see the kids in the movie grow up. Big whoop. Not an ounce of Hollywood gloss here. The movie goes for realism in the extreme. Homes are dirty, kind of crappy and depressing. It also passes over obvious places other movies would go; it skips cliches. No the step dad does not try to sexually abuse his step daughter. Which was a breath of fresh air. But it also crosses a line of being too realistic in terms of having no real plot. For awhile there IS kind of a plot as the mother deals with a difficult domestic drama. But after that the film sprawls. Example. The dad (minor spoiler, nothing big; probably you'll read about it in any review) seems not entirely to have reached closure with his ex. Maybe is considering getting back with her? But suddenly the movie cuts; it's years later; the dad is with another woman and has had a baby with her. I don't know about you, but between those cuts there might have been some good drama, but it's just skipped. Despite the title, the film dwells on every family member, so it's not like Ethan Hawke is a minor character. Yet they pass over a giant life event.

Minor spoiler is now over.

Yes stories should flow from character, but there should still be a story. Character reveals itself through the crucible of a crisis. Aside from the drama early on with the mom's domestic issue, there is no crisis here, and no story. When Hitchcock was asked what he thought of slice-of-life stories, he said he preferred to give people a slice of cake. I left this movie hungry for that cake. And besides, so-called slice-of-life stories, the good ones, do have a crisis. It's just that it's subtle. We didn't get that here.

There is no depth of the boy's life plumbed here. Just sketchy skit-like scenes semi-related.

Another point. Aside from Ethan Hawke, no one in this movie seems to have a positive attitude about anything ever. It's one thing not to be Disney, but this movie mistakes chronic maudlin negativity for drama. A story requires conflict. But much of the activity in this film doesn't rise to the level of actual conflict. Instead it's just a manifestation of some kind of low grade depression that never quits and slowly grinds down the teeth on the gears of your spirit.

Even though the movie is too realistic, in other ways it is too unrealistic. There is oddly stilted fake sounding dialog in the first 20 minutes or so. Also, the son (the "boy" of the title) encounters adult men who act exactly the same toward him all the time, step dad, teacher, boss, all of them criticize him in exactly the same way, and that's all they do. You could switch out the dialog for all these guys. They are all the same. Except Ethan Hawke. Another unrealistic thing. When the boy finally lands a girlfriend, she just happens to be one of the most beautiful women you've ever seen in a movie. This pimply pug nosed boy, without athleticism, brilliance, money, or particular promise, gets a girlfriend who probably would have thought herself too good for a young George Clooney. It's ridiculous. And they were going for extreme realism?

In my own life growing up I encountered some real weird sh!t. So did friends. They say 'sh!t happens' for a reason. But if this is supposed to be this kid's life, either they skipped over that type of dramatic stuff or he had one heck of a mundane childhood! Also, these people seem to have no center. If they have values or principles or beliefs, that's skipped over too. There is some banter that might try to be passing for philosophy but it amounts to nothing of substance. Yes as an adult paying bills and just trying to survive, you don't go around espousing basic values every day of your life, but these people seem so empty inside, as if they are animals that just happen to be able to speak. There's something off-putting about them from my perspective. They are not like people I have ever known.

Ethan Hawke does a good job acting in Boyhood, but why did he agree to do it? Predestination, his other new movie, is sci-fi, but it's also a study of character as revealed and developed through a protagonist's response to a crisis. It is stellar, brilliant, the best of the best. I am chalking it up on my list of the very best films (of any genre) that I have seen. It will be right beside Before Sunset on my BLU Ray shelf. Predestination raised Ethan Hawke in my estimation, and even Boyhood, which I saw a short time later, cannot bring him down entirely. So let me divert you dear reader. See Predestination. Skip Boyhood

God help us, this was boring. Saw it on TV. If I'd paid theater prices, I'd really be po'd. Two hours of whining about the meaning of life. Just awful.

I get that it was filmed with the same cast over 12 years but there was no story-no suspense- no plot whatsoever. It was literally watching excerpts of a totally normal kids life as he grows up- total waste of my time. Not entertainment-maybe art. Nothing happens in this movie. In summary it is a pointless movie about how pointless life is. Expand

It follows a malnourished poorly cared for low ambition boy as he shuffles along from age 6 to 18 where he officially becomes a young man. I wonder with such a poor mother how he survives. Spoiler alert, the mom ends up divorced three times and cared more about her schooling and job than either of her kids and it shows. It's no wonder she ends up at the end of the movie lacking 2 dimes to rub together alone and in an apartment in her fifties. I was waiting for over 2 hours for the movie to get to a point and it never did. Waste of 2 and one half hours of my life. The only upside was the music which was good if you liked top 40 songs from 2002 to 2013. Expand

Boyhood is a film for poor butt sucking critics who lives are terrible and can relate with a film that gives a dark view on how life is really terrible. I can't believe that rotten tomatoes and metacritic gave this film high scores, either because they don't know what real films or they just have their heads up their prideful asses. Boyhood is a disgrace to modern day cinema and is the absolute worst and I mean worst film of 2014. Expand

Boyhood is a movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family. It had to believe that a project like this could be pulled off over 12 years. Ellar Coltrane was great throughout this movie. It would be neat if this movie is the only thing he does. He really shows what its like to be a growing male. I found many aspects of his life that we similar to events in my own life. Ethan Hawke was great also as the father. I'm going to say that this is the best thing he's ever done. Ethan Hawke is a bad that you wish everyone had. Richard Linklater has pulled off a movie that has captured a point in time and although it may not be relevant forever it will be one of the most significant movies of this period of time. Linklater even did so while casting his own daughter with little experience in one of the lead roles. I would be 100% happy with Boyhood winning best picture this year and I wouldn't be shocked if it does. Expand

Truly amazing movie. It really reflects my life and the more you think about it the deeper the movie gets. Definitely a masterpiece by Linklater. If you think this movie is boring then you really don't know how to enjoy one.

"Boyhood" 10 Scale Rating: 5.0 (Mediocre) ...

The Good: I have to admire the ambition. It takes a lot of guts and vision create a film piece by piece over a 12 year span and I have to give Linklater credit there. Overall, the film is well acted and the characters are at least somewhat interesting. Ethan Hawke turns in the best performance of the film and newcomer Ellar Coltrane improves drastically as the film progresses. At times, "Boyhood" starts to head down a very entertaining path and you can briefly (albeit very briefly) see why it was nominated for Best Picture.

The Bad: But then, once it heads down that path, it does an about face. Time suddenly passes in the film and the previous storyline is an afterthought. At 2:45 the film is also extremely long and it feels it. There are far too many gaps where nothing happens and you feel like you're just watching the life of a regular every day family. Maybe that is the point, but it doesn't make for a very compelling film. Slow moving and with a highly unsatisfactory ending, "Boyhood" might be among the most overrated films of all time.
