A brilliant, visionary idea that is based on truth, so it mixes everything in life: humor, sadness, bitterness and joy, as well as stupid women. Still, it's definitely not among the best movies ever made.

Expertly directed, written, and edited. This movie teaches you not to live your life as a series of milestones, but to remember the little things, the good and the bad. Strangely, the characters I found myself focusing on more than the main character, were his parents, Mason Evans, Sr.(Ethan Hawke), and Olivia Evans (brilliantly played by Patricia Arquette). Expand

On rare occasions, a movie seems to channel the flow of real life. Boyhood is one of those occasions. In its ambition, which is matched by its execution, Richard Linklater's endearing epic is not only rare but unique.

I think this might be the most overrated movie of all time.

Metacritic has it in their top 5 of all movies ever by critic score. If you've watched it, it should be clear that, while not a terrible movie, it is certainly nowhere close to a top 5 movie of all time.

Certainly filming the same children for 12 years is a neat gimmick.....But its still a gimmick. The rest of the film surrounding that gimmick is really nothing all that special. The acting is okay. Cinematography is pedestrian. The screenplay is pedestrian. The story of growing up presented here itself is not very compelling. Sorry to say but the child actors here really were very bad at acting (not that that could have been foreseen when they started). The only really neat or special part of this movie is watching the children age as the film progresses, which does not by itself make it deserving of a perfect score for film-making all time. Because that's just a gimmick, not a complete film. I thought the evolution of Ethan Hawke's character was the most interesting part of the film, but everyone else was pretty boring. It is worth watching, but come on this is not one of the best movies of all time.

It results in a very effective and enriching film experience as if following the life Mason rather than the highlights of Mason. Being the same age as this kid it truly resonated with me at a level I cannot describe, and needed some time after viewing the experience to reflect and ponder myself. Because that's what the movie strives for. Moments of reflection, perspective and seeking truth on the journey of life, but never giving us the answers. The film's length is a bit unwieldy at times, but it also really helps drive home the epic weight of what's been accomplished here, and -- indeed -- the majesty of life itself. Life is far from perfect. In fact, much of life includes suffering, hardship, undue change, and an endless study of "what might have been." But if I'm hearing the movie's message right, it's important to take all of that in stride and to focus more on the present moment, keeping hopeful for what might be in store for us all down the pike. On the one hand, it elevates the medium of film to equivalent of fine art, faithfully documents every moment repeatedly within a long period of time. On the other hand, it explores how we can use movies to translate biography -- in the end, every single life is capsulized in a story. What fine art requires is accuracy and rawness without selectivity; what literature requires is a consistent narrative. That seems to be a paradox, but Boyhood achieves a great balance between the two. Expand

Focused on the character named Mason from his sixteen-eighteenth year, the great difference of the film is to see the actors poisoning naturally during the years that pass by. Very gratifying to see the evolution of each character during the lapéis of time this makes the movie true, alive. The mother of the mason played by Patricia Arquette does a great job with the evolution and the physical and mental disengagement of the character in the beginning for example she wants To do college, then to be a teacher. The father of the mason played by Ethan Hawke is incredible. The maturation of the character is evident during the years. As the film portrays small moments in the life of Mason it is impossible not to become familiar with at least one of them new school, First love, domestic abuse, alcohol, drugs, etc, this makes the film an incredible experience the cuts are perfect, the sequences plans are very good and the story n It does not become tiring at any time what is quite rare in a movie lasting 130 minutes. The film has an incredibly well-written screenplay that is due to the actors who make the film look like a real and familiar experience. Ends in the second certain. In general it is a film that took years of production and a lot of effort involved and this generated some of the best cinematic experiences.note 100 Expand

A boy debating the necessity of Facebook with his high school girlfriend. In all honesty, Boyhood is a rather apt title for this film. But it could just as well hold the name of another picture currently running in cinemas: Life Itself. That simple yet profound thing is what lies at the core of Richard Linklater’s unique 12-year-spanning story and makes it relatable for everyone, regardless of sex, age group, descent, social status, or character. Linklater lets his audience live through the fun and the pain, the love and the misery, and the excitement and the disappointment of his protagonist Mason with yet another wonderful screenplay in his repertoire and an unspectacular but still extraordinary way of directing. Leaving the cinema, it’s hard to grasp one has just spent the better part of an evening in front of a screen, but at the same time, there’s also a feeling of having relived your own adolescence along with Mason. Which is understandable, Boyhood is by no means a flawless films (as a LOT of critics claim it to be) but it doesnt deserve all of the immense hate people are giving it either. I'm neither a ''love-it'' or ''hate-it'' kind of guy, i thought it was a good movie that certainly has its moments but i also thought it was a movie that had so much potential and missed a lot of it.
Let's start with the cons of this movie, Boyhood is empty because it lacks content and form. It celebrates the ordinary and mediocrity instead of aiming at something extraordinary. Boyhood is not an entertaining film and the almost 3 hour runtime is probably to blame for it, it certainly has it's moment of wit and compassion but overall i would not call Boyhood an entertaining film, on top of that there isnt really a story, it's more like just the life of someone where things happen, and that's it. It doesnt have a solid premise either.
Next problem, there isnt a single character to whom you feel compassionate to, (except maybe Ethan Hawke's character, he is the stand out) and the film focuses on the life of Mason, a character that has absolutely no interesting characteristics whatsoever. Mason walks through this film as if he was in a coma or half asleep; he has no ambitions. At some point he gets his first kiss, gets interested in photography (the ultimate art form for unimaginative lazy people) during high school, goes to college at which point the film ends.
Before going in i knew this was going to be a movie about ordinary people, in ordinary situations in an ordinary life, which might turn people away from a movie like this very quickly, but not me since i'm a MASSIVE fan of Linklater's other work: The Before Trilogy, a trilogy where nothing happens and where the audience follows ordinary people living their ordinary lives. Sounds boring right? But it certainly isnt, the Before trilogy are all 3 such meticulous, astoundingly acted, brilliantly written pieces of cinema where Linklater celebrates the normality of people's lives instead of going for the flashy razzle dazzle. It sounds boring but it is so incredibly captivating, beautiful and brilliant. and since Boyhood was also about ordinary people i was expecting the same kind of brilliance Linklater had shown the world with the Before trilogy. Linklater is a master at making very uneventful but thought provoking movies, except this one isnt thought provoking.

Now we have the cons out of the way, what are the pros about this 3 hour movie.
The performances are good, with Ethan Hawke as the standout, there are quite some exceptional moments in this movie, but that's all they are, moments, which is a shame, too little to fill the 3 hours. Boyhood captures the normality of life perfectly, something Linklater is exceptional at, only he didn't make it interesting, which he so perfectly did in the Before Trilogy. The fact that it's shot over 12 years shows how ambitious Linklater is, and the fact that he made 8 movies in between those 12 years is quite an achievement too. For a movie like this to work perfectly it would need to have emotional depth throughout the film, Boyhood has that in certain moments, but definitely not throughout the film.

All in all, Boyhood is by no means a masterpiece or a flawless films, which is something critics claim, but it also isnt as terrible as lots of people make it out to be. Boyhood is a stellar cinematic achievement with certainly a lot of great moments, but in the end falls short of greatness by being just a little too structureless and empty.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Boyhood is one of the best films I've ever seen. Boyhood is such a great film because it is very relatable to myself. The film follows a boy's life from childhood all the way through his high schools years and that is what I am going through myself. What makes this film so unique and different from other films, is that the director chose to film this movie over the course of 12 years. This allowed the film to be much more accurate in tracking the life of the main character, Mason. The way the director chose to shoot the film, made me realize how much effort and funds were put into this film, and that's why this film is so successful. Apart from those reasons, the film is just really enjoyable. It has a bit of everything. It has humor, romance, drama, and it also mixes in life lessons. Overall, this film is tremendous and I highly recommend watching it. Expand

Boyhood is one of the most interesting movies i have ever seen. Its very relatable to me because the movie follows a boy going through high school and so am I. Another way boyhood is more different and interesting from other movies is the way Richard Linklater chose to direct this movie over twelve years so they can have the same cast and show the actual actors aging and growing up. All in all it was a very enjoyable film. Expand

The highest Metascore on Metacritic history. A score of 100 out of 50 critics is the highest you could get. Boyhood may win #1 at Metacritic's King of Metascores, but I never enjoyed this movie that much. I liked it, but not loved it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The greatest achievement of "Boyhood" lies in its fundamental truth. Not a single moment of those 12 years, compressed into almost 3 hours, feels scripted or, worse, false. It is far more an act of biography that narrative film-making, reconciling the enormity of its scope with the searing intimacy of its storytelling focus.

The central performances - of Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke, Lorelei Linklater and Patricia Arquette - are
warm, empathetic and authentic. Coltrane, in particular, is a captivating presence in the titular role, and manages to transcend the role of an actor giving a performance, instead becoming more of an intimate acquaintance. The deft mix of the triumphs and pitfalls of his coming-of-age are heartfelt and deeply moving. One also cannot ignore Patricia Arquette's understated powerhouse as Coltrane's mother - she captures perfectly the struggles of single parenthood. I saw a lot of my own mother in her and the sacrifices and mistakes that she makes. Arquette provides the film's emotional centerpiece, delivering a wrenching soliloquy towards the end of the film on age and regret that may be one of the definitive film scenes of the decade.

Granted, this is not a perfect film - it lacks momentum, it meanders, it glosses over one or two points, it misses one or two thematic opportunities. But to fixate on those is to ignore the resounding success of Richard Linklater's profound ambition and the breathtaking connection this film makes with its audience and its deserved status as a benchmark in film history.

The father and daughter relationship. The mother and son relationship. The favoring of each respectively. The film has so many scenes where micro expression are present. For example: when the professor meets the child of his "favorite student" resulting in a quick micro expression of disappointment which can be seen when the camera shows his expression on the discovery that she is a mother. Since she is an attractive woman. Nonetheless the movie antagonizes everyday life situations, which helps in relating with the characters as well as seeing the plot. It's a movie about life and that life as a boy growing up to be his own identity. I would definitely recommend to any body interested in psychology, body language, and life and development. For a more intellectual audience. Expand

Phenomenal and unforgettable, "Boyhood" is a film like no other, and makes it the best film of 2014.

Boyhood took 12 years to make, which makes the film so unique in many ways, this is a movie directed by Richard Linklater, and stars newcomer Ellar Coltrane, and supporting cast members like Patricia Arquette (who won the best supporting actress Oscar), Ethan Hawke (who was nominated for best supporting actor) and newcomer Lorelei Linklater.

Plot:
The film starts out with Mason Jr. laying down on the ground looking up to the sky, his mother Olivia picks him up from school. Mason Jr. overhears his parents arguing that following evening, he quickly learns that Olivia is moving he and his sister Samantha are moving to Houston so Olivia could attend the University of Houston. From there all the characters slowly age for 12 years, showing each character for approximately 15 minutes each age.

The film shows it had a lot of effort put into it, director Richard Linklater has shown us how childhood could be difficult and to show that it is important to keep up with life. Boyhood proves to be The Godfather of today's film industry, it is easily one of the most thought-out films to date.

Boyhood in my opinion is one of my favorite films of all time, there is always something good about the film, there has been no other film like this one. I very highly recommend watching this one to see how the main character grows up.

But for the cinephile and the patient viewer, "Boyhood" provides a unique viewing experience of singular ambition and veracity and captures the minutiae of adolescence in the 21st century with searing intimacy and an expansive scope. It is, of course, this focus on the mundane that has divided audiences far more than it has divided critics. But "Boyhood" is, at heart, nothing more or less than what it sets out to be: an authentic exploration of growing up. And it accomplishes that with exceptional clarity and honesty. It feels like we viewed it from a young boy's perspective, not the adults behind the camera. As such, there is no defining moment within the film that makes it stand out: the reality of the twelve years it covers on-screen is its defining moment. Shot by shot, it is far from unforgettable but as a whole, it is definitely memorable. At heart, "Boyhood" is an extraordinary way of telling quite an ordinary story. I can't put it any better than that. Expand

The fact that the movie is so mundane is part of it's charm. The film does a good job of presenting the beauty in the things that we often take for granted. This is honestly about as natural of a film as they come, nothing feels contrived about it.

It's not the Hollywoodized mumbo jumbo that people fawn over as an escape from their stressful lives or failed dreams. This movie explores stressful lives and failed dreams, so don't watch it if you're out for an 'escape'. The acting was so real I have trouble convincing myself it's not a true story. It is a true story for so many families around the world. It just resonated so much with me. It's honest, heart wrenching, and real. That's why I loved it. Nothing's hyperbolized or detracted so that it'll be a Hollywood sensation. It's an honest look at a boy's life as he grows up in a less than ideal family situation. It explores what exactly life is, tackles questions like 'What's the point of it all?", and "Is there real magic, like Elves?". It pulled me in completely and by the end I felt like I never wanted it to stop. No movie has ever made me feel the way this one has. It's made me grateful and it's made me want to go out and make a difference in my own little way. Thank you to the actors, producers, and crew of this movie. This is cinematic realism at its absolute finest. Everything about it, the characters, their conversations, and their mundane everyday experiences are captured in a way that mimics real life like no other film I've ever seen, not to mention watching the characters literally grow up before your eyes is surreal and deeply fascinating. This movie is basically just a bunch of scenes documenting this kid's life, some of which will make you laugh, make you sad, make you nostalgic, make you hopeful, etc. There really is no overarching plot, but nonetheless, I feel like I could have sat through another 3 hours of this movie! I'm curious what the people who claim that the reviews are solely based on the 12 years concept think about Linklater's Before series. Those movies were not filmed over 12 years but are written very similarly to Boyhood and were extremely well received. The truth is that the 12 years adds a real and compelling vibe to an already well written movie. This movie is about how life is made up of little, meaningless moments that go by before we even know it. Every scene is so carefully made, as to capture every detail as realistically and compellingly as possible. The movie is simultaneously beautifully nostalgic, and utterly depressing. One can find himself trapped within it, long after the movie has ended, because we all have had a moment that relates perfectly to us in the film. For me, it was the launch of the Harry Potter book, yes I was the one kid that staid in line for hours to get a copy of that book!
It deserved more than it has gotten in terms of awards, for it is, at the end of the day, a masterpiece that took 12 years in the making.

Sure, many of the events here have been depicted before and the whole coming of age thing has been done to death, but man, it has never been done like this before. Sporting a killer soundtrack to guide us as we trek through Mason Jr's formative years, Boyhood is a slice of life film like never before. Things happen for no reason, things come and go, and things fall apart out of thin air, just like real life. This film is extraordinary for many reasons, one of which has to be the way it was filmed. You do not see films made over the course of 12 years and to see this only helps it be all more powerful. As we grow up with the actors throughout the film, you truly feel like you are almost watching a documentary on these people's lives, which is an incredible feeling .In addition, it just felt unique and was amazing to watch unfold. In addition, it does not try to create drama. Life is not perfect and things happen randomly, people drift off for no reason at all and you have no idea why and you never see them again. This film is exactly like that and makes no attempts to "Hollywood" things up by tying up all the loose ends, instead it leaves them as is. Plus, one cannot forget that this isn't their whole story; this is only a 12 year period in their lives. Who knows where their stories will end up? The writing is incredible, as is the direction from Richard Linklater, who is a true visionary and has undoubtedly created his magnum opus with this project. The acting from Ellar Coltrane, Patrica Arquette, Ethan Hawke, and the only cast, is incredible. The chemistry and familiar relationships felt so real and authentic. The situations rang true and ultimately made this one feel as though the most authentic coming of age film I have ever seen. There were no one dimensional characters and everyone had a story to tell, just like in real life.

Above all though, I have to say one of the best parts of this film has to be the quotes, in particular one that stood out to me, "I thought there'd be more." Just impeccable writing that manages to sum up what it is to be at that point so well, although I personally have not gotten there, I can sympathize with that line and its meaning. Ultimately, Boyhood deserves the accolades bestowed upon it and is one of the best films of 2014 and will undoubtedly be hailed as a film for the ages. Wow.

If you do not take into account the effort made in creating this film, it turns out to be a better-than-average one, but not best a best-of-year film. It is a good luck at the reality of parenting and childhood these days, the struggles that fall on both sides, but there are some parts that don't seem to really go anywhere. Overall, it's a humbling, emotional, empathetic and thoughtful film but may be a bit too long and "pointless" without a plot to appeal to most audiences. It helps to go in with the notion of the effort that this film required, which helps you appreciate it more. Expand

With that said, although I thought the movie was fantastic, it isn't for everyone. Some people may be put off by the film's run time, and it not having a traditional three act structure that most other critically acclaimed films have. This is a movie about a boy's life growing up, simple as that.

The acting and the dialogue felt extremely natural, and the film manages to showcase the beauty in he mundane. Some may say the film only gets praise because of its 12 year filming period, but truly, that's just one thing that made the film compelling to watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very beautiful in its own way. I was able to identify myself with the main character. The movie told about real life and there wasn't too much drama or unexpected life changes. Because the same guy acted the main character for the whole movie, I kind of felt like I knew that guy and I felt little protection of the desire for him. The reason for giving this movie only 7 out of 10 is that it was a bit long and every now and then i felt myself little bored. Probably because I ate all the popcorn at the beginning of the movie lol. But overall, it was a nice package filled with dialogue and funny moments between family. The most memorable moments were the tent tours between father and son spiced with marshmallows and cream crackers. Expand

If this movie were to be made within a 1 or 2 year span I truthfully can say it would not have the same impact that it does. A nostalgia filled film following a young boy and his journey through boyhood. Engaging to the current teenage generation and empathetically moving to the generations before us that understand what it is like to be a parent and have your child's young years pass by quickly. The maturity and growth of the actors is both phenomenal and honest. It is a true film that manipulates our feelings of longing, love, and growing up. The amount of commitment to these roles and this movie is astonishing and awe-inspiring. Though not the most entertaining of films, it does seem to be one of the most intriguing of films ever made. It is a nostalgic, emotional ride that takes you through life's wonders of growing up: awkwardness, insecurity, first love, puberty, change, and becoming an independent being. All things we go through as a child and as a human being. So prepare yourself, for this honest, understanding, and emotionally driven film. Expand

It offers a lot to the viewer, but it also demands quite an effort to be fully comprehended. Full of a variety of cultural references and a very specific zeitgeist atmosphere, this movie is a profound and aesthetically perfect epic dedicated to life itself.

Linklater's hyperrealism is something that contributes to the magic of the film itself. It is not a movie, it is a story about a boy, his development inside the boiling cauldron we all call life, his struggles, both external and internal and, ultimately, his victory over life itself as MJ comes out stronger and more mature. You never actually perceive it to be a movie, rather a story of a boy you're witnessing first hand, either as a direct participant or a third-person observer, but always within the story itself, never distancing yourself back to the sofa or seat you're actually in. All the actors are brilliantly adapted to their roles, never over-acting or showing signs of egoistical vanity, dedicated to both the idea of the film itself and the story of Mason Evans, Jr., the main protagonist of the film itself.

Finally, the aesthetics of the film is stunning. The technical details, a well-made choice of scenery and moment, the authentic presentation of a human emotion that just flows through you via the screen like you're actually there and captures you fully, forcing you to relieve that same emotion, via nostalgia or anything else, within yourself - all of that and much more contributes to that specific aesthetic moment that is 'Boyhood'. Because, it really is just a moment, a moment of 12 years compressed into three hours, but so rich and fantastic that it is much more than just a cinematic experience, much more than just a movie.

'Boyhood' is an absolute master-piece, a work of art in every sense of the work, elevating the often pompous and overly self-worthy genre of art films and elevating the cinematic experience as a whole. A story that must be seen, carefully, remembered and loved. It reached the status of a classic immediately, surely to be remembered in history and is, certainly, one of the best movies ever made and one of the best stories ever told.

If you can appreciate quiet, intimate, introspective character studies, like 'Lost in Translation,' 'The Kids Are All Right,' or Linklater's own 'Before' trilogy, then you'll probably find a lot to love in 'Boyhood.' If those kinds of movies aren't your cup of tea, then likely neither will this movie. Expand

Phenomenal

When you think back to Slackers you remember how easy that movie flowed. How comfortably it drifted. Just go with it. Let it happen, live in the moment. Then there's the Before trilogy which again seemed effortless and free-flowing yet constructed with so much care that you knew this filmmaker was not only unusual, but acutely human. That he cherished experience and learning and submitted to the eternal present, surrendering to and tinkering with fate, while tending to the perpetually immediate situation with enormous sensitivity and regard.

But nothing could prepare you for Boyhood. You can't overstate the fact that it's a grand free-flowing time-lapse experiment and that most of the actors--no not actors, not performers--most of the people were cast when the central figure was a very young boy, looking up at the sky, having no idea how his future would unfold. The world might be a stage but Richard Linkater is not omnipotent. As a definitive work-in-progress, a daring collaboration with fate and destiny, who could really know how the boy's script was going to turn out, and how the wide array of voices in his life would shape him as he stumbles toward adulthood? Only a true sure-footed and fluid filmmaker, an authentic disarming innovator could raise this baby with as much beauty and wisdom. Dazed and Confused? Make room for Clear and Composed.

Hear the lamb howl. Boyhood is a daring experimental wolf wrapped in conventional wool. Needing to be shot chronologically, the linear time-line and 12-year shooting schedule called for a fresh and original approach to crafting a movie. If something went wrong during the many long gaps in production, say, if an actor suddenly became unavailable, or some drastic circumstance threatened to break the continuity of the boy and his family's life, there's no going back to re-shoot. No relying on special effects make-up or casting young and old versions of a character. The faith invested in this concept and the delicate handling of it's execution is a marvel to witness, blooming before our eyes.

Patricia Arquette was growing up too. Aging faster than Ellar Coltrane, it appeared. This movie defies breaking up into a series of disjointed, episodic fragments. And Arquette stitches together an admirable and dedicated performance as the ubiquitous maternal defender who struggles to keep herself and her family from falling apart. Because of the blur between fiction and reality, between drama and documentary, and because of the way Linklater is able to nurture the process and allow his films to take on a life of their own, Arquette may not be acting on set any more than she has to in real life. A slight adjustment in perspective and this movie could have been called Motherhood.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie, but if this is the best movie of the year then there isn't much for me to look forward too. On the plus side, kudos to Richard Linklater for making a well-directed film, but what really is the point of the whole exercise -- to make a movie that was shot over a period of 12 years with the same actors in the end as where there in the beginning? Well, that's quite a feat I admit, but it doesn't automatically translate to an entertaining film. I guess it helps to be a parent which I'm not. You can hold that against me if you like. Expand

The key is that it's a more contemplative kind, similar to a documentary, there is nothing to reflect. Richard Linklater brings this film and tells everyone, this is life. The level of reality that reach the story is shocking, takes the viewer to his own childhood, having two characters to identify with, Mason for men and Samantha for women; and for parents there is Olivia and Mason Sr., make your choice. Maybe not with the best plot, not clever script and simple performances (except for Patricia Arquette, who is absolutely breathtaking), but hey that's how it's life. What is surely a success is the song Hero, fits perfect with the movie. Expand

It may not be the most exciting film to watch, or the most interesting, but as i found with the film Inside Llyewn Davis it is a nice and pleasant viewing experience. And that's what this film is: an experience. The 12 years of filming works meticulously well and really helps develop the characters as real people. The film is about growing up, and the reason the message and work comes across so well is because that's literally what happens: they grow up. Other films that try this with different actors don't really work and you find them a little too boring or sentimental, but this film works with the growing up mechanic so well that you can really relate to the film even if you don't follow a life like the one portrayed in the film. I must say the acting is pretty solid pretty much from the get go, but the character Sam i found a little bit obvious as not being a real person. However, all the other actora felt genuine, and that's why i felt i connected with this film. A must watch. Expand

Boyhood is a movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family. It had to believe that a project like this could be pulled off over 12 years. Ellar Coltrane was great throughout this movie. It would be neat if this movie is the only thing he does. He really shows what its like to be a growing male. I found many aspects of his life that we similar to events in my own life. Ethan Hawke was great also as the father. I'm going to say that this is the best thing he's ever done. Ethan Hawke is a bad that you wish everyone had. Richard Linklater has pulled off a movie that has captured a point in time and although it may not be relevant forever it will be one of the most significant movies of this period of time. Linklater even did so while casting his own daughter with little experience in one of the lead roles. I would be 100% happy with Boyhood winning best picture this year and I wouldn't be shocked if it does. Expand

It's not, by any means, a bad film, just not nearly as good as most critics claim it is. The problem I have with this film is its glaring lack of substance. There is not a single character in this film that goes through some kind of character arc. The minor changes they undergo are left obscure and there are no hints as to what brought about those changes. None of the characters are likable. The entire film almost is a passive observation of this family's uneventful progression through the years. Although that worked very well in the first half of the movie the second half seemed superfluous. It brings back some of the most overused cliches (honestly if I had a nickel for every time a movie showed the divorced dad as cool and buff and the divorced mother as the complete opposite). The kid actors are great but as they age they seem less and less convincing. The dialogue as well suffers from cranky and mawkish moments. And on top of all that it lacks lacks a narrative structure. If you look at the Tree of Life, which is just as unstructured, Malick took advantage of that and turned it into a meditation on human behavior. Boyhood didn't even attempt to achieve anything of the sort. Tree of Life was poetry; Boyhood is just product. All the reviews I've read so far seem to be obsessed with the concept of the film rather than the final result. To me, Boyhood is yet another film that didn't come close to justifying its overblown hype.

Re:Edit: But now that the hype has settled, I do agree that it's a great film. It explores the notion of growing up, our ethical definitions about what is right and wrong and the truth behind the social "code" for well-being. Mason (Ellar Coltrane) starts of as a young boy who enjoyed spraying paint in the corner of streets and collecting arrow heads. As the film continues he grows into a deep and thought-provoking teenager who's obsessed with understanding human behaviour, the significance of our actions and the value of life itself. He's able to express his emotions though art. Ethan Hawke's character grows responsible and matures as the film progresses. His conversations with Mason transcend from talking about the next Star Wars movie to understanding the purpose of life and living. Patricia Arquette is very very good as the mother obsessed with the idea of "fixing" her family through marriage (and she does marry men of all sorts). She grows up to realise that chasing the conventionality of society is a pipe dream and does not lead to a better life. On the contrary it's a burden to her and her children for the most part.
Life doesn't have to be perfect. It just needs to be lived.
The true genius of Boyhood is how it's able to juggle all these characters, in one go and still provide them depth, clarity and most importantly an identity.
At the end of the movie. Nicole asks Mason if he believes in the expression "seize the moment". Mason replies, "It's the moment that seizes you" and he's absolutely right.
