This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's one of the best psychological horror movies I've ever watched. It's about a man suffering from opioid-induced psychotic disorder and spiraling out of control, while his family is desperately trying to help him. From reading people's reviews, it becomes apparent to me that most people didn't even understand what the movie was even about and blame the movie of their own lack of understanding, which is kind of amusing to me. Eternal Matrix of the Spotless Mind

This film currently has a low rating (38 critic, 5.4 user) and many bad reviews. But I've read some these reviews, and all of the bad ones and even some of the good ones - misunderstood the film or didn't understand it fully. I can see this film becoming cult in the future.
This film explores and exploits the idea of the unreliable narrator to the maximum. It poses so many questions, answers them, but then takes away the answer. It keeps the two far sides of the possibility so precisely balanced and strong, that you could tie a string in-between, and the tension would be literally palpable. The tension that keeps guessing and wondering the entire film, until the Very Last Second.
This film is incredibly dystopian but also incredibly utopian at the same time, and you can't help but feel for the only unlucky bastard in the world, who might know the absolute truth.

My husband was an addict. Therefore, I will say, it is not possible to "miscast", to believe so would say that everyone isn't subject to addiction-that there is a "type" and "not me". Commentary like "it was boring" also really means nothing because that is also part of addiction. I had my brother-in-law tell his daughter once (when she asked WHY he did drugs), "because he was bored". I was kind of upset about the parts of the story not tied up in a bow, but that also is part of addiction. My husband died of an overdose and I still don't know why or understand it - hence the confusion fits, too. In short, I think people who have had to deal with addiction before will kind of "get it" better than those who don't. But no one will "get it" all the way - because that is the nature of addiction. I kind of enjoyed it, kind of made me sad (due to husband), and kind of wished parts of the story were explored more definitively because that is my nature - to want a complete story with all questions answers and tied up in a bow. But addiction isn't like that so... Expand

It is a real heartbreaking story if you understand what is happening in the movie. It is sad that people do not seam to understand the movie and what it is really about. Even the description of the movie on IMDb is totally wrong for some odd reason. To me this movie was excellently executed. If you know people how have struggled with similar issues you will probably understand the movie and the story a bit better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie deserves a higher rating. Absolutely phenomenal! Newly divorced and just fired... probably due to his mind focused on this alleged, "second" life he has. Drawing pictures at work of his second home and not showing his kids mother any attention led him to receiving termination and a divorce, along with residency at the hotel. His "soul mate" just was lying and really wanted her experiment to work out, so getting him to forget his family just wasn't happening! I watched it twice and probably will watch it again. Great film! Expand

The movie was so TERRIBLE, and SO CRINGEY, that I don't even know what to think. Sure, drugs are a hell of drug. But this movie is so anti drug that they go through great lengths to make it the cringest thing imaginable. Notable excerpts are "they rebooted him!" And "brain box." My god. The movie is so actually terrible that it's making me near suicidal again. I can't handle the level of cringe that this movie has. The entire movie is so poorly written that I firmly believe the writers thought they were geniuses. And what does that have to say about Bill Nye being in the film? That drug addicts are the only ones that respect him? This movie can go straight to f**king h**l. Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek are now my least favorite actors. I will never watch a movie with either of them in it again. You can go ahead and be like "well, I think it sends a powerful message" blah, blah. No. No it doesn't. You're a pretentious a**hole that has no idea what drug addicts are like. I have a few cousins that are heavy drug addicts. I've never witnessed them or their friends doing anything this CRINGEY. Drugs ruin lives in excess, but this is pure disgusting propaganda and I have no respect for anyone who worked on this film. Not only do I think that my time was wasted, but I feel as if staring at a wall for 48 hours, would have been a better use of my time than the 2 hours it took to watch this horsesh*t. Usually when a film is terrible, you can just make fun of it, but this movie was so terrible that I was in shock from how terrible the movie actually was. The entire time, it was like "does this movie even have a plot or a point?" And yes, it does. It's plot is to waste your time so horribly that it feels like you've been violated. Expand

This sci-fi tale takes a while to generate interest and even when it develops into something somewhat intriguing, it never gets good. The concept skims the surface, so it’s harder for the actors to dig in. Compounding that is the basic premise, which is never clearly explained and an ending that’s completely unsatisfying. No thrills, action, emotion, originality or even cool special effects. Expand

Don't know why such low ratings. I might get if mediocre, since this movie fits a genre which not all might like and isn't for masses. It's something of a mindf... genre, but I do see the story behind it and I thought it was an interesting watch.

I know it sounds strange, but the film never seems to have a consistency that would make it less feeble, or more than anything enough quality that makes it worthy of the issues it's dealing with.
It's basically the Dunning - Kruger effect.

And maybe, just maybe, the lead couple wasn't the right one.

Kind of felt like a small budget indie film, but with two A-listers somewhere in the 2nd act of their careers. Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek are both very likeable people/actors, so that made for easy viewing + the pleasant scenery.

Oddly enough, after recently putting in about 160 hours on Cyberpunk 2077, a large portion of this movie felt right out of Cyberpunk 2077, glitches an’ all. It was like watching a side-story based around two of the homeless NPCs that wander around in that game. In fact, the whole thing is maybe based around a type of braindance circumstance ???

The movie as a whole came off more like a good episode of a Sci-Fi show that takes on various Sci-Fi subject matter per episode, i.e., Black Mirror.

Also, I’m not entirely sure if this movie was a complete bait-n-switch and it was all about one thing masked in something else, or if it was about both things equally and/or separately. Was it all social commentary? Idk.

Peculiar. Interesting. Not a bad watch.

You will live in a paradise only gnoseologically virtual and, above all, only in your subjective image and likeness. Third chance: you can accept it as the last stage in the grieving process and enjoy the status quo. Leaving aside the slew of quotes, thank you so much, Mr. Cahill.

As the youthful year gets going with promise and poise (anything has more promise than 2020), streaming sites are becoming ever more full of content. This week I was able to watch, Bliss. So let's see how two of Hollywood's darlings fared in this otherworldly time spectacle.

In this Prime Video streamer, we follow Greg (Owen Wilson), who is struggling with his marital/family situation and issues at work, when he meets the mysterious and captivating Isabel (Salma Hayek). Who isn't captivated by Salma Hayek?! Am I right or am I right? Anyway, Isabel is a woman living on the streets and convinced that she's polluted and broken the world around her. You can say her powers have them in a "computer simulation". Matrix vibes anybody? Anyway, Isabel and a skeptical Greg figure out that maybe she's not as crazy as she appears. I know what you're thinking that this sounds quite interesting and in fact this is remotely original. And, boy, do I enjoy originality. The most original part of this is making Salma look ordinary. It took some effort to make her look like a weird off the grid lady, but really it just is too, too much hair and extra baggy clothing. Either way, even though I thought the pairing of Wilson and Hayek would be weird, they actually worked pretty well together in good roles for them.

On top of that, I enjoyed the message that viewers derive from this film. The filmmakers definitely touch upon a world we live in but don't want to see. The subtle differences in reality for people in homes and those on the street can be ever so slight, but we all need help. Life is hard and can be even harder with mental health issues or drug dependencies. We all deserve love and for our loved ones to care about and for us. Nevertheless, I enjoyed how the movie teetered between reality and fiction as I can imagine it does for many people struggling with issues. There needs to be better efforts to help our dependent communities. *steps off soap box* Which world is real? We may never know but either way the set design is great in both.

Bliss sparks a bit of bliss in the Prime Video catalogue. Original, a bit off the wall, weird, and corny but different in a good way. The pairing of Hayek and Wilson really makes this movie have feeling. The unbelievable couple makes this movie feel real. While ignorance is bliss, Bliss provides insight into the divide between communities and the idea of us all wanting to chase bliss. Feels a bit long but grab a nice bowl of popcorn and enjoy this Prime Video streamer.

I felt this was an excellent movie about half way through when I realized its a drug hallucination movie. I think Owen Wilson was excellent in the movie - especially the latter parts where you could see him degrade. Highly recommended.
