Super powerful movie which is also super funny. Made me think of House Party the way it blended the plight of young black folks vis a vis the police and the general struggle to get by.

The actors also wrote the screenplay, which is somewhat based on their relationship. Diggs plays a released felon in the final days of his probation. The ominious threat of losing his freedom hovers over him every second, while Rafael's jokily threaten his security. The themes of racism, police violence and gentrification are prominent, but their unique relationship forms the core of the story. Think of this more as an art film than a typical exploration of gangsta culture: One that's uniquely compelling. NOTE: They work for Commander Moving and drive a truck with its phone number on the side (415-407-5043). I noticed it's NOT a 555 number, which is the standard fake movie number, so I called to discover that it's the real deal. Expand

Amazing! No film about race has ever managed to pull that off as near as well as this one did! Overall, yes it may be just another race film, and that's exactly what it is, but only at first glance. On the surface however, it's much more and filled with tension, humor, and so many other powerful themes and meanings. And not to give too much away, but one awesome and effective rap from one of the characters towards the end of the film is worth the price of admission alone! Expand

And that, dear reader, is unusual. Expand

“Welcome to Oakland”

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a cult classic on our hands, and people don’t even know it.

‘Blindspotting’ does an excellent job at avoiding the force preachy message about race and social issues a lot better than any Oscar bait movie that calls itself “important”. Despite occasionally falling into some cliches in certain areas, but that never interrupts the natural flow that made it feel so real and incredibly terrifying.

The themes of violence, race, cultural, fear and anger - linking in a tight knot that strings elements of modern society. At times it’s funny, like really funny, but can be unnerving when necessary. It’s got a lot to say and leaves room for discussion. All of this was beautifully presented through the writing/performances by Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal. Of course Carlos López Estrada, a fresh face filmmaker who’s best known for directing music videos brings that surreal and captivating eye to detail into the film.

It’s approach of applying rap in some scenes which I find to be a unique and interesting decision that pushed the message forward rather than let characters discuss about it, especially the last ten minutes that felt like a release of trauma and pain. It’s very poetic and almost Shakespearean. People have mix feelings of this approach, because it’s not often you see something like this done, and that isn’t a bad thing.

How people overlooked this movie is almost criminal. Now I’m guilty myself for missing this out, but with very little marketing and the lack of faith from the studios, who would have known this existed. I guess the best way to find gold is to dig through the dirt.

I wish we get more movies like it.

Somehow, in its one hour and thirty six minute runtime, it covers almost every aspect of identity. It explores racial identity and financial identity, sure, but the crux of the story is the conflict between how we identify ourselves versus how other people identify us.

I was absolutely impressed by this film. Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal wrote and starred in this movie together. They are an incredible team. Daveed Digg's character Collin struggles with whether to report an act of police brutality, or keep it quiet in order to finish his parole. He strongly identifies himself as someone who "does the right thing" but he realizes that it would be better for him to keep his mouth shut and let a police killing go unpunished. This conflict is further compounded that he is unable to shake the perception others have of him as a violent felon. Miles, Rafael Casal's character, struggles with his identity as someone who grew up in the hood of Oakland, but now that the area is being gentrified, he feels that his struggles and experiences are being erased. This causes him to act out aggressively, which damages how other people see him.

This movie has a lot of laughs dispersed between intense scenes. There's a lot of really well choreographed violence and tension in addition to the philosophical script. The soundtrack is great. The cinematography is engaging, and the direction is immersive. My one big complaint with Blindspotting is that the climax in the last 12 minutes of the movie feels unearned. Other than that, this is a really good movie. I'd love to hear what you all think!

It is one of the most mesmerizing scenes that I have ever seen an actor (Diggs) give on screen.

"Blindspotting" in many ways--not good---is like "Sorry To Bother You" which I saw last week, in the sense that the screenplay is all over the place as is the direction but where Sorry is being sold as a comedy/satire Blindspotting is definitely drama. Both are rated R for violence, drugs and language and both deal with the intermixing of the white and black world but Blindspotting deals on a personal level between Collin and Miles being friends since they were kids and Collin being sent to prison for a felony committed by Miles and we meet Collin.

They are many different layers to this film with the obvious one being Collin is black and Miles white and their friendship and what it means. It is obvious the two actors have been friends since they were kids and their rapport is instantly established.

Though the scene I talked about is a 'don't miss' piece of film I really can't recommend it as what starts out as a thing between the two friends, their talking in rap, eventually becomes annoying and makes a lot of 'dialogue' indecipherable. Daveed Diggs who made a name for himself winning a Tony in "Hamilton" on Broadway should certainly gain recognition for "Blindspotting".

Definitely one of the best films I've seen in months. Precise in its theme and quite well acted by its two protagonists who are also the writers.

I have some complaints and the main ones are that the mix between comedy and drama at certain points feels unbalanced, especially because in the end the film is more a drama than a comedy and another is that I would have liked a more smooth and algid narrative rhythm but in the end they're minor complaints and the truth is that I'm quite satisfied with the film.

And I must point out that the flashback scene of the bar that the guy tells when he meets Collin, felt a lot like Michael Peña in Ant-Man.

for the cinematic craft..

Blindspotting

Blindspotting is a character driven drama about two friends who lives on the edge of the life and are unaware of it until a crisis comes knocking on the door. The chemistry between the lead cast is touching the sky, brimmed with tiny notions like references that chuckles them up, being boldly honest and their knack of creating rap momentarily. Estrada's world is a thrilling distraction, a distraction that is worth accounting in, if you seek to understand and enjoy the ride. The narrative is fast, raw, bold and hits hard to the viewers within first few minutes, the audience is more than welcome in their poignant yet pragmatic bubble. The structure of the feature is fresh and falls step by step in front of the audience with fine editing as each frame plays a vital role on justifying the actions. The race against time factor creates the sense of urgency on screen that cuts deeper and keeps the crisp alive among the characters. The background score is up beating with bang on raps sung by the cast that actually is essential to the plot track; music plays an important part in here. The cinematography might not be up to the mark but the camera work is decent enough to survive, with a dark theme and colors speaking volume. Armed with a poetic script (or a hardcore rap, some might say) Estrada is surprisingly good for his debut major motion picture and flaunts enormous potential. If Diggs is sensible and a hard worker, Casal is his alter ego with hilarious and horrifying portrayal, he shifts his color like a chameleon. Music, layered one-liners, slick humor and a poem that flows across the tale are the high points of the feature. Blindspotting is a metaphorical tunnel that is equally important to the political condition of the world as much as it is for the cinematic craft.

The duo wrote, starred, and scored the movie and are the centre of the movie’s success. Blindspotting is extremely fast-moving, covering a lot of ground in its relatively short 1 hour 36 min runtime. Blindspotting presents many of modern-day America’s pressing issues with an easily consumable vignette. The movie is filled with wit, charisma, and charm. While the movie isn’t always saying something, it is always doing something. Blindspotting follows Daveed Diggs’ character Collin on his last few days of probation. Collin is a black man who received unequal punishment at the hands of the criminal justice system. The inciting element of the movie is during Collin’s drive home with only a handful of days of probation left; while stopped at a traffic light, a black man runs out in front of the truck he is driving, skirts around it and is shortly thereafter shot to death by a pursuing police officer. Collin is kept awake at night by PTSD set off by the event and is thrown into chaos from his previous limbo. Miles, played by Rafael Casal, committed the same crime as Collin but was not charged, as such Collin holds some amount of underlying resentment for his friend. Blindspotting explores interracial character relations and relations between classes. The movie explores gentrification, appropriation of black culture, and police brutality. But at the same time, the movie is filled with scenes like the one in the barbershop, where Miles has a rap battle with the head stylist about pawning off a box of old hair curlers. The movie may be rough at a few points, but this is easily missed because of how entrancing the movie is. Blindspotting is exactly what it needs to be when it needs to be it. Expand

I've finally watched a movie that my brother, Trip Fontaine has begged me to watch for 2 years now,Happy 4th of July, Stream2BigScreeners (even those of you not contemplated as humans at that time). I've dreaded this day for so long. I've finally watched a movie that my brother, Trip Fontaine has begged me to watch for 2 years now, Blindspotting. It's a movie that came with rave reviews that I pushed to the back burner to not be sucked in by the hype. Blindspotting follows the main characters, Collin, a felon just trying to make it off of parole, and his best friend from childhood, Miles, on the last few days of Collin's probation period. In these last days, Collin has to evaluate if this friendship is what he needs in life to stay on the straight and narrow. Let's see what I missed.

I'm going to do something I'd hate to give Trip the pleasure of by saying, "You were right." I should've watched this movie when he told me to. Wow, I really prejudged this movie in 2018. I saw what I wanted in my implicit biases instead of allowing myself to empathize and find mutual understanding. I realize that I was failing to listen to the movie who is different from me and try putting myself in its shoes. You know like trying to understand the microaggressions that give the film PTSD daily. Giving this movie a chance to be equal or others like it. Wow, this must be just the reckoning that so many other Americans are experiencing now, opening their eyes to marginalization of their black sisters and brothers. Protests daily over police brutality, statues coming down, Confederate symbols being dismantled, and white voices stepping back from black and brown animated roles - is it enough is the better question, but I digress. Gentrification, Racism, Issues with Police and the Criminal Justice System, and etc. This movie shows it all. It's the mash-up of "Atlanta" and "Dave" and a dose of Hamilton but on the big screen. The intersectionality of this movie is delectable. The funny thing about Blindspotting is that it was perfect for the climate in 2018 and still immediately relevant two years later. In those two years, families and communities have lost too many loved ones to insidious and persistent racism - purposefully, systematically, and subconsciously. This movie is for all those Karens, and Kens, and allies alike out there.

Yes, the language can be a little abrasive at points; but, we all need to open ears to truly listen to one another and open our eyes to see what's really going happening in the world. And yes, this movie has some random rap sequences that, while lyrically are pretty good, are awkwardly placed for effect. Think Hamilton set in Oakland. Shout out to Hamilton on Disney+! Nevertheless, the awkwardness of some of these sequences is definitely ameliorated by the strong acting performances by the main cast. From "Black-ish" to Hamilton, Daveed Diggs shows tremendous range and this is no exception.

Long story short, this movie is quite enjoyable and I might even dare to say excellent. In a way, I'm mad I didn't support this film when it was in the theaters; but, I'm also ecstatic that I could watch it at this time for the first time. I say pop yourself a big box of fresh popcorn and enjoy this at home.
