Difficult slog. The descent into moral depravity was too quick, too easy, too unbelievable to be explained by mere blindness. The descent into moral depravity was too quick, too easy, too unbelievable to be explained by mere blindness. Too many people standing idly by when EVERYTHING about their situation should have demanded more strident action, more intelligent and more organized a response. I felt frustrated and angered by the patheticness of it all--even the incomprehensible inability of the soldiers to respond in a minimally meaningful or conciliatory fashion was pointlessly baffling. This is a movie where the details felt entirely disingenuous and ridiculous, as if every possible Orwellian fault was systematically exposed before being played to the hilt. Somehow, though, the overall setting/plot device somehow managed to remain both plausible and quite strong in its impact. Some solid acting saved this for me... but still nothing stellar. A week later and I didn't think of it once until I was reminded of it on this site. It could have been great had real people been blinded instead of a loose conglomeration of hypothetical constructs. It works for the most part but not completely. Visually it is very good, and the direction is impressive. The acting is quite good as well. It always held my interest. Good effort.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An entertaining movie with excellent acting and an intriguing plot that lost a star or two due to illogical story elements (which I would typically accept in a postapocalyptic thriller ... zombie apocalypse anyone?) After a group of people in some unnamed city fall victim to a blindness epidemic, they get thrown into an abandoned facility run by the military for quarantine. Julian Moore, the lead protagonist, is immune to the blindness but pretends to be blind anyway so she can accompany her husband, Mark Ruffalo. The majority of the movie is a harrowing tale of how a growing population of confined blind prisoners cope with little-to-no care. It's essentially an adult "Lord of the Flies." To describe my issue, I need to put a "spoiler alert" disclaimer before I continue. ****** A nefarious faction in the "prison" begins to ruthlessly extort and rape the other groups in exchange for their rations. Moore and Ruffalo's characters do their best to keep their group civilized. My bugaboo is that Moore rarely uses her ability "to see" to an advantage. How hard would it be to sneak past the blind bad guys while they are sleeping or distracted. She and the other women are repeatedly sexually assaulted, but it isn't until one of the women is killed during one of these episodes that she decides to do something about it. Having sight when everyone else is blind is like a super-power that isn't used until very late in the movie. Beyond that it is an entertaining twist on the apocalyptic drama. Expand

Blindness is a relatively straightforward movie and is not particularly good or bad. It is ironic how a film about how ugly humans can become when there are no laws or institutions (why do you think we need them?) gets a strong negative reaction from those that don't want to see that reality, much like the characters don't see what they are doing and what they've become. I didn't find it very insightful or poignant. I can only recommend it as an exercise for those who would consider what they would do in a worst case scenario. Blindness is not really entertainment nor is it very artistic but it is not the worst film ever made either. Expand
