Fantastic movie with a fantastic cast. The story of the Stallworth Brothers is insane and the message that this movie is trying to make is a very important one right now. BlacKkKlansman is an absolutely fantastic movie with a great cast, a terrific script, and a message about the dangers about the growing presence of the Alt-Right and white supermacists in America today.

Going into this I thought this was going to be a comedy. The way the ads made it seem it was going to be a fun time. This is a dark time. A huge learning experience for people that don’t understand racism from the time of this films set time.Going into this I thought this was going to be a comedy. This is a harsh reminder of what people of color and even women, albeit one more than the other, went through back in this time. With some pokes at our modern times. There is some action but really there is more of a thriller sense throughout the film. So, it`s good, but it’s a very niche film. If you like spike lee films or thrillers or maybe like historical pieces, then this is your film.… Expand

A film that was much more political than I expected, judging by the Coming Attractions I had seen, which led me to believe that the film would be lighter than it was – and funny. But this film is deadly serious and a commentary on the state of civil rights and the state of the country today, which is depressing. This was not so much because of the film itself, which was well-made and well-acted, but because of the end of the film, which, in effect, argued that nothing has really changed. Spike Lee is a great filmmaker, and I was surprised that he could not make the film more insightful. The actors were excellent.… Expand

It's a really well-made film, and Washington is a true find. Yes, he had his rise on Ballers, but he's exceptional here. Adam Driver is also excellent - great to see him play another role in his Logan Lucky persona. Kicking things withIt's a really well-made film, and Washington is a true find. Kicking things with Isiah Whitlock (Senator Clay Davis from "The Wire) was a genius casting choice. And Laura Harrier as Patrice is a revelation. However, casting Alec Baldwin was a terrible mistake - anybody could have done that role better, and the end cap was a choice I wouldn't have made, but I don't blame Spike for doing it. You never would have seen that in a movie like Do The Right Thing, which is his magnum opus.… Expand

John David Washington and Adam Driver carry this movie, and they give some truly great performances, perhaps (dare I say it?) career defining! This movie is immaculately and creatively shot. The script is all at once funny, tense, romantic, sobering, and it ends on a great call to action. The one flaw is that I don't think the villains were very well developed, but the payoff at the end is so satisfying. I think maybe this film will even get some nods during the awards season! If I were to guess, I would say Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound Editing.… Expand

Admittedly, I've never been too crazy about Spike Lee (with the exception of 'Do the Right Thing', which is probably his most classic and well-known film.) However, although predictable and seemingly formulaic at times, this latest effort ofAdmittedly, I've never been too crazy about Spike Lee (with the exception of 'Do the Right Thing', which is probably his most classic and well-known film.) However, although predictable and seemingly formulaic at times, this latest effort of his did manage to go in some unexpected directions, and I mean this in a pleasantly surprised and good way. Lee cleverly and skillfully balances dark comedy with biting political, social, and of course racial commentary to make for one powerhouse of a film. In addition, John David Washington and Adam Driver both give bold lead performances. Overall, Lee really is in top form with this latest effort of his. Any film that enrages its audience or at least makes them ponder with its all too true and relevant themes and events is a pretty effective film in my book, and this film fits that bill perfectly needless to say.… Expand

With the exception of two of his movies I am not a fan of Spike Lee or his persona but there is not getting away from it that BLACKkKLANSMAN is a superior movie and should be seen.

The first half of the movie is sort of a roller coaster rideWith the exception of two of his movies I am not a fan of Spike Lee or his persona but there is not getting away from it that BLACKkKLANSMAN is a superior movie and should be seen.

The first half of the movie is sort of a roller coaster ride hitting on many subjects with humor and insight but it isn't til the latter part of the move that it becomes epic and shows wit, passion, satire, tension and relevance to the past and present. Written by Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, David Wilmont and Spike Lee the film opens with a film being made by Alec Baldwin playing a man who is giving a KKK speech and is followed with the panoramic crane shot from "Gone With The Wind" where Scarlett O'Hara is walking through a filed of hundreds of wounded and dying Confederate soldiers. There are other references to the film regarding Hattie McDonald and Butterfly McQueen but the movie references are mainly D.W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation" made in 1915 that was mainly pro KKK and anti Black.

The film is based on the book by Ron Stallworth, the true story of his becoming the "Jackie Robinson" of the Colorado Springs police department, the first African-American to join the department. He will eventually goes undercover, passing as white via telephone, in the local KKK and soon talking to David Duke, their Grand Wizard. The next step is to have white, Jewish detective Flip Zimmerman be Ron at meetings he is invited to attend.

From that point on practically every group of people from Blacks to White Christian Americas to Gays to Jews, Policemen, 'Pigs", among others, with all the negative and positive words, sayings associated with each. It is here where the script, and Lee, go helter-skelter with words, music, fashions, ideas and portraying various people who were involved for and against the KKK. Though the mid-section is scattered all over it is easy enough to follow and gives you the time to hear the ideas and arguments.

It is at this point that Harry Belafonte appears on screen and starts talking to a group of Black Student Union members and about the 1916 lynching of Jesse Washington in Texas with inter-cutting scenes of David Duke giving a speech about 'white men' that you forget to breath until the final shot before the credits appear.

This past weekend was the anniversary of the white supremacists march and violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Spike Lee drives home what has happened since then.

The cast from John David Washington as Ron, Adam Driver as his partner, Laura Harrier as a local collage activist leader, Topher Grace as David Duke, Corey Hawkins as Carmichael aka Kwame Ture then, Robert John Burke as the police chief, along with strong actors as part of the squad or the KKK. Last but not least there is the face of Harry Belafonte who was a symbol to many of the Black people fighting for equality and dignity.

"BLACKkKLANSMAN" is a film with laughs, horror, truth, being clear and confused within the same frame, heroics, pain, moving and a major accomplishment in the career of Spike Lee.… Expand

If right now you're not into the ''conservative's'' agenda, you're a snowflake, you're a leftist radical, a libtard, a progressive who wants to alter the established order, the order they believe is the right one. Remember: They had a good life.

BlacKkKlansman is all that but it's also a true story about the shadow and eternal stain of cultural and institutional racism in the United States. Spike Lee takes a case from real life to expose an idealogy of the past that today in this 2018 regrettably has become more palpable than ever.

Perhaps the most ironic is how he mixes such a serious subject and balances it with enough sobriety and a good dose of drama and comedy when necessary. But that's true to his style as a director, so it's not surprising but it's pretty good to see him once again doing things really well.

I would like to delve more about the film but I firmly believe that it's not necessary but I think that each viewer should see it and get the best out of it in the end to be able to express an opinion and take a teaching on its subject today more than ever.

It's assumed that the US is the most progressive and open country in the world or perhaps one of them. Do you seriously want to go back to that past? When a few, had a good life because of the color of their skin?

BlacKkKlansman is a character driven thriller drama depicting the dark times that striked upon American Civil Rights which was steeped by an organization named Ku Klax Klan. Fortunately, for the makers the taboo subject analyzed in here hits the required note upon the current political situation. The vision of the writers is ahead of its time and with a jagged script like such, they don't flinch on visiting newer territories. Despite of meddling with such a fragile concept, the feature is surprisingly hilarious with tiny notions of the theories and references of cinema and music of 70's that is imputed smoothly. The usual chain terminology in your typical Police Headquarters is depicted aptly with a light environment among the office employees in order to bridge their bonding with concrete material. The husbandry gags kicks in especially when Driver learns to adapt the dialect and tone of Washington with some tricks and tactics that draws in most of the laughs. Ticking for more than two hours, the screenplay is tightly packed in two halfs. The first one is how Driver spears into their world of habitual controversies and "be part of the gang". While the other half is basically nail-biting "close calls" where Lee's directorial experience and finesse factors in effectively. The writing is elaborative with bold and inedible substance that aren't minced in words and if anything the emotions iterated by them is pure rage, to a point where audience may easily cringe on the seat to the "whiteness" of reality. Lee's tale is of Mob mentality that he speaks in volume through metaphorical terms foliated in long monologues and speeches that are exhilarating as much as layered. The political narrative is never opinionated since it explores both the side of the coin and tosses in front of the viewer to calculate upon. The music plays a vital role in Lee's latest project, the background score is appealing with up beating and heart breaking songs that elevates the momentum of the sequence. Washington's character is under sheer pressure at most of the time as it fights on both the aspects of the issues depicted in here but his portrayal is sculpted with such panache that it makes you groove when he hits someone or scores in an argument or even moves his legs in clubs. While his better half on screen, Driver recieves a bit more intense role (he still gets few laughs now and then with his partners) as he plays more on the field than behind the desk. Jasper Paakkonen gets a stand out moment and is probably Lee's finest Trump card, for he is not only the threat to everyone in the feature but he gets equally wider range as the protagonist does. Harrier, Grace and Burke holds on to their roles tightly and delivers a decent performance. As mentioned earlier, Lee is no short on execution and is probably his best work of his career as he has evolved naturally on delivering a compelling storytelling. The gripping screenplay, debates hidden under ideology and conversations and Washington and Driver's on screen chemistry are the high points of the feature. BlacKkKlansman is the finest entries on Cannes festival this year and is a competitive contender to the Golden Trophy and not because of its questions raised in here for the current society but the way it is crafted out.… Expand

As far as film making goes Spike does a great job of putting the viewer in the observer seat yet makes you feel so connected to the events that transpire in Colorado Springs.

In the polarizing world some of us uncomfortably navigate in this is a necessarily tough film to watch, it will be even more uncomfortable for those who look at the top of the head of oppression and never directly in the eyes. For the oppressors and those marginalize/allow others to oppress by proxy this movie will be absolute garbage.… Expand

This narrative is told with tension and humor, but the movie also takes several extended preachy moments to hammer home the history of racism in America. Despite Lee's angry messages, there's plenty of comedy that would border on absurdity if it weren't based on truth. Even though the film skews polemic at times (dealing with a subject that's sadly still timely), Lee's skill as a storyteller creates a compelling narrative.… Expand

Perhaps staying too true to Mr. Stallworth’s book,the film gives really no insight or depth to any of the characters as they portray the real people they represent. Mr. Lee does make his point, however, but seems to bring it home more with a hammer than a scalpel. I did enjoy the film mainly because of the unique premise that a black detective (Mr. Washington) could infiltrate this body of hate via the physical persona of his fellow detective (Mr. Driver). I give the film a 7.0 because of the worthiness of its message and the incredible story it tells.… Expand

This is a terrific film, one of the best I have seen in years. The script, acting, plot and direction are near perfect. John David Washington turns in a spectacular"Blackkklansman" is possibly the year's best, but it does have some serious competition with "Hereditary", one of the creepiest and mind melting movies to come down the horror pike in years. John David Washington turns in a spectacular performance as undercover cop Ron Stallworth, a true story of a very smart and brave African-American who is the first to join the Colorado Springs police department. After hearing a moving speech by the former Stokely Carmichael as an undercover cop assigned to listen for possible threats against the citizens of the city, he becomes sufficiently moved enough to cook up an under cover operation against the local KKK chapter. To do so he has to use his detective white friend Flip Zimmerman, played brilliantly by Adam Driver to be his in the flesh double at various meetings and infiltrate and eventually become a full member of the KKK, with the Grand Wizard David Duke coming to Colorado Springs to personally swear him in. It's much more than that, however, as both versions of Stallworth have to be oh so careful in their roles. The big takeaway from this movie is of course the demonstration of the ultra hate filled and impenetrable stupidity and mental psychosis that defines all those involved with this hideous organization. That it goes for all hate groups, including skin heads and other "organizations" that exist today as well is an obvious point. Lee, however, has done a great job of pointing out several factors that can be overlooked in this day and age of focus on extremist positions. First, while the KKK members and equally hate filled idiotic spouses are pictured for the tyrants they are, we are reminded that there are plenty - millions - of white people out there who deplore these racist hate mongers as much as any African American does. It's very important to mention this because if we are ever to wipe out or minimalize for good the actions of hate groups and do something about those elected to office who are racists themselves it will take a concerted effort of cooperation between all races, creeds, religions, etc. to achieve the goals of at least reducing the insipid behavior of those who support white supremacy and other horrible agendas. The film closes with actual footage of the demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia by racist morons, including that of the murderer who deliberately ran over a woman with his car for being "liberal" and supporting the black counter demonstrators. Add that incredibly stupid statement by Trump accusing both "sides" of terrible behavior, when it was a demonstration by white power numbskulls that took place. Why would it be terrible for those who were being attacked to defend themselves? All it did was strengthen the bonds of the racist morons to Trump, who is a profound racist as we all know. I truly believe that the movie is great, and as a white male, I feel it important to let those minorities who are oppressed, including the LGBT community and all who suffer at the hands of hate filled bigots that there are millions of us out there who are in total support of you and are just as disgusted and fed up with these mental midgets as you are. I hope the movie gives us a feeling of cooperation and a desire to close the horrendous social/political divide that is killing this country. It can be done, especially at the voting booth. We must show the haters who love Trump and his own hatred that their kind cannot prevail for long. They belong in the sewers where they crawled out of when Trump announced his candidacy.… Expand

Ladies and gentlemen, the reviews do not lie - director Spike Lee has crafted what is perhaps his most compelling film in well over a decade with "BlackKklansman", a movie that is as smart and funny as it is politically aware and relevant inLadies and gentlemen, the reviews do not lie - director Spike Lee has crafted what is perhaps his most compelling film in well over a decade with "BlackKklansman", a movie that is as smart and funny as it is politically aware and relevant in the current heated climate.

The film does get off to a slow start, but when it does take off it does so like a rocket. The main plot - a black police officer joins the KKK and has a white coworker pretend to be him at their meetings in order to investigate and disrupt their operations - is one so ridiculous that it would require every person working on the movie to be firing on all cylinders, and Lee, the screenwriters and the talented cast pull it off without a hitch. Part of why this works as well as it does is because the lunacy of the premise is like an in-joke that the characters are in on, and watching them go back-and-forth between stone-faced seriousness when face-to-face with the Klan and outright mocking behind their backs for having fooled them so completely is thoroughly entertaining to watch. The two leads give fine performances - Adam Driver's was my personal favorite between him and John David Washington, because he does a lot to explore the moral grey zone of a Jewish cop going undercover and spouting hatred left and right and is thus ten times more compelling here than in either of the more recent "Star Wars" movies - and the movie proves it has more on its mind than a zany premise and some comic hijinks, with juxtaposed images of young black college students and ordinary-looking white people chanting "Black/White Power", respectively, bringing up some interesting comparisons and contrasts while the side plot of Washington's character dating the president of the Black Student Union at the local college allows for thought-provoking conversations between the two on whether black people can try to fix the system from within by gaining access to it or it should be torn down for being too far gone to save.

The movie does get a bit heavy-handed in some places, the insane amounts of racist rhetoric are to be taken with caution if you react strongly to that sort of thing, and as mentioned before the first 20-30 minutes are a bit of a drag, but on the whole this is a compelling and insightful film from one of our most overtly political filmmakers working today. Regardless of where you sit on the political spectrum, you owe it to yourself to get out and see this movie - it may not change anyone's opinion, but it'll certainly provoke some thought at the very least.… Expand

I never wish to address politics, but I feel like Hollywood has made more socially-conscious movies ever since President Trump was inaugurated in office. It may be a coincidence, but I don’t think so. In 2018 alone, there have been three major movies that have dealt with racial inequality. We first had Sorry To Bother You, which was tremendously overhyped and overall a bad movie. Then we had Blindspotting, which was an excellent and realistic look at the injustice that people of color often face. Now, we have Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, which has been showered with praise. While not perfect, it certainly has plenty of quality moments that overshadow it’s lack of a plot objective. Let us begin.

The story of the film focuses on Ron Stallworth (a most entertaining John David Washington), a rookie African-American cop on Colorado Springs who decides to open an investigation on the KKK. Stallworth communicates with them through the phone using his “white-voice”, and fellow cop Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver, who did great) meets with them face-to-face. What makes the movie so engaging is the dynamic between the two cops and the concept of acting as someone else. The phone conversations between Stallworth and the KKK alone provided many great moments. As if that weren’t entertaining enough, the scenes at the meetings were well-executed and engaging, if not very sad. All of the major-billed actors, with the exception of Stallworth’s girlfriend Patrice (played by Spider Man’s girl in Homecoming), performed very well, especially John David Washington and Corey Hawkins (Kwame Ture was his character). During the scene with Ture, it was an empowering moment for the film to highlight the faces of the crowd and the true statement that “Black is Beautiful”. However, there were a few aspects that prevented this film from being amazing. Allow me to explain

I’ve stated the importance of a clear plot before, and that is where BlacKkKlansman falters most. The movie just does not have a clear plot; there isn’t a purpose to the investigation except to highlight that the KKK is racist. They are absolutely corrupt in the mind, but what they do technically isn’t illegal. Throughout the course of the investigation, the Stallworth Brothers (as Ron says) try to uncover a plan for an attack; they talk about doing things, but they never create or carry out any plans. This hurts the film because the investigations never lead anywhere. They just show what KKK members do during their meetups, which is basically drinking beer, chatting about life, and being racist. Basically, they are frat and f**k boys. The lack of an objective hurts the film the most, along with the poorly executed remembrance of the Charlottesville protests.



After seeing the trailers, I had been excited and looked forward to seeing BlacKkKlansman and even more so after seeing all the rave reviews. Once again, reading reviews prior to seeing a movie set high expectations that weren’t quite met. I was highly entertained and found this film to be one of the funniest films of the year, but this is largely credited to the character, chemistry, and two-in-one dynamic between Ron Stallworth and Flip Zimmerman. They, however, did not have a specific objective with the investigation, which is what the movie focuses on. Overall, I would say that this film is worth your $12 to see it in theaters. After watching John David Washington in Ballers and this film, he is definitely a star in the making. Maybe one day he’ll reach the level of his dad Denzel; he was easily the best part of the movie.

Rating wise, I would say that this movie deserves an 8 out of 10. If only all movies so close to being amazing just had a definitive plot.… Expand

Directed by Spike Lee and set in the early 70s. Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Stallworth wastes no time and sets out to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. With the help of Philip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) together they team up to take down the KKK. You can really feel the anger coming through this film. It shifts from comedic moments to intense drama so quickly you're laughing one minute and left in a state of stunned silence the next. The sudden tone shifts in the hands of another director may have been a disaster but Spike Lee has found the balance. Not an easy watch and the story is a little dragged out in places but it's well worth the ticket price. BlacKkKlansman shows you the racial tensions in 1970s America and asks you to compare it to present day. By the time the credits rolled you could hear a pin drop and in a nearly sold out screen in my local cinema which can normally sound a bit like a zoo when it's that busy there wasn't a sound to be heard. Some of you may not realise how rare that really is but it happens once in a blue moon so if by some chance this review hasn't convinced you to see BlacKkKlansman just go see it anyway and make up your own mind. Very entertaining movie which, as I'm an Englishman, I was able to probably laugh even louder at the obvious pseudo-political rhetoric.

As a story, it's exceptionally implausible... To the point where the 'based on a true events' cliché is only there to imply how utterly stupid the local 'Chapter' of the KKK were when director Spike Lee turns up the social satire to 11.
Plot holes abound, character choices make no sense, and the narrative climax is very forced. We're then offered up several minutes of recent news footage which is there to show President Trump as a Right Wing, evil dictator who is incapable of admonishing the actions of modern Far-Right, God-bothering, White supremacists.

Overall it's an easy enough film to kick back and watch. But it's trying to hard to emulate styles and ideas other films/directors have done a lot better.… Expand

I went in totally blind without seeing the trailer but I gotta hand it to the filmmakers. Spike Lee, congratulations on the mini statue for the screenplay award. The screenplay was quite good and added to the interplay of the characters. The casting was great, and the characters fit the story well. John David Washington does a phenomenal job as the main character, he’s very relatable and bringing in humor at times when he takes the selfie photo (spoiler). Kylo Ren got nothin on this character played by Adam Driver. Might be the best acting I’ve seen from Adam Driver. It is based on a true story but they took some liberal creative freedoms. Basically the most interesting parts of the film weren’t real but a creative freedom. Such as the explosion at the end of the film where the lady blows up her boyfriend. Anyway, oops that was a spoiler. Overall a great film.… Expand

Lee uses humor to take you out of your comfort zone while telling a TRUE story of a police investigation in the 70s and drawing not-at-all subtle comparisons to the current climate in the western world where it's suddenly OK to march with a hate group again in the US and Germany.

c) Washington is really good in the lead role. At times he reminds me of his father, though he's not the same power house actor. At least not yet. Although I haven't had much opportunity to see him in films.

d) At this point I think I'd watch Driver do anything. I like him in Star Wars. I like him even more doing comedy, like this film or Lucky Logan. He has such a strange charisma on the screen.… Expand

At a time where the Ku Klux Klan was being formed, Ron decide to infiltrate in the group and tear it down in the best way as possible, from inside, but once that he couldn't phisically get there, his partner Flip, a Jewish got to be there in the Klan. Directed by Spike Lee and writenn by Spike Lee, David Rabinowitz, Charlie Wachtel and Kevin Willmott.
This story is a real one, i'm not so sure how much of true facts we have in here and how much got invented for the narrative to flow, but i can say that it is much well successful, the story is very well told, you can understand what is going on very well, you can get who is a douchebag and who is a good person, wich side each one is, you decide if this is good or not, i think that for this story it did worked. Spike Lee was able to put in our view different sides, we can see the racists white people, the not racist white people, the militants, that, in some way, also does spread some hate as well, and our character, Ron Stallworth, is in the midway of that, he, of course, hates the racists, and also, knows that isn't all white people and cops are bad people, so he sees in the big picture, that isn't a bad or good side, except the racism one wich is bad, but in cops and in militants, there are good and bad things in both of them. The movie makes a point of showing us, brutally and raw the racism that exist, it is so ugly and nasty, there are some moments that it got me right at the "Get Out" movie for example, in dialogues and in visuals, things got hard and deep. There are a few things in the story where things could have been a bit better in my opinion, there some things that are well developed, some things that kind of feel out of place, some scenes go for so long, the movie could have been a bit shorter as well.
The acting here, i found it great. John David Washington was great, he could show me how indignant he was about the whole racism situation, he could pass me the rage that he felt when he got disrespected, i could see in his face how much he wanted to fight back, in other moments he was funny, discounting the anger like punching the air, his expressions was really nice and convencing, great job. Laura Harrier was also pretty good, she as a militant leader made me believe that people was on to her. Adam Driver is damn great, he pass through some situations that are kind of extremes, he is totally in embarrassed moments during some moments of this movie, and it seems that he always have a good answer, for more tense that his position could have been, he was the best on giving me the conflicts of being inflitrated in some group like that. Jasper Pääkkönen plays a really stereotyped guy, the way that he portrays his character is pretty close to how he plays his character in Vikings, a very agitated person that is always suspicious about others. Ryan Eggold in other hand plays a much quieter character that trust better in other words. Topher Grace as David Duke also did a good job, he can use the words really well. Alec Baldwin have a small part in this, and he is just hateful. Paul Walter Hauser is also in here, and he plays his character in the same way that any other of his characters, a drunk dumbass.
Even that the movie is in the 70's, you can see that a lot of those things still happens in nowdays, wich is sad and a terrible thing that we have in our society, this movie does criticizes the people a lot, showing how ridiculous and disgusting racist people are, Spike Lee did this with maestry, you can just feel the anger and frustration running in your veins when you see the scenes in this movie, and he did in a way that you could feel in the whole place how much wrong things was going o there.
The soundtrack of this movie is fantastic, it is so amazing, like a guitar in a epic solo, for some reason it reminded me of Jimi Hendrix. So as the photography in general, the shots in here have a 70's feeling, since the way that it got filmed, there is some really pretty moments that the camera film from the nature. There are some dutch cameras being utilized in here that represents pretty well the unbalance that is happening in the scene and also in the planet in general.
The movie also does criticizes the government openly, without letting anyone have any kind of doubt on what they are referring to, during the end, it is a really shocking thing that comes at you like a strongly punch, right at the stomach.… Expand

BlacKKKlansman is the first Spike Lee joint I've ever seen and it did not disappoint. With clever comedy and interesting social commentary this film made for a unique experience that you don't really get nowadays.

BlacKkKlansman is a film with a lot on its mind. It opens with one of the most (in)famous scenes from Gone with the Wind (1939), before pivoting to a fictional precursor of Alex Jones lecturing the audience on the dangers of the "negroid", and later takes in everything from Kwame Ture to David Duke, before lambasting The Birth of a Nation (1915), criticising the tropes of classic Blaxploitation films, going into agonising detail regarding the 1916 lynching of Jesse Washington, sardonically criticising police bureaucracy, and concluding with a montage of the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, intercut with Duke championing Donald Trump's presidency, and Trump's own reluctance to condemn the white supremacist component of the rally. The film then ends with an upside-down black and white American flag (a symbol for "dire distress"). Yep; this is a film with a lot to say.

Telling the story of Rob Stallworthy (John David Washington), a black police officer in Colorado Springs who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in 1979, at its core, BlacKkKlansman is about institutional racism in the United States. Written by Spike Lee, Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, and Kevin Willmott, and directed by Lee, the film's second scene clearly signals its combative intent as well as highlighting its structural intricacy. The scene depicts the fictional cultural anthropologist Dr. Kennebrew Beauregard (Alec Baldwin), who, in grainy black-and-white footage tries to alert the audience to the fact that the negorids are attempting to take over the country. What's especially well done here is how Lee uses D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation. As footage plays behind Beauregard, his face is erased of its colour - he is literally rendered white enough to become part of the image, which depicts a narrative built around the inherently virtuous nature of being white. It's a powerful shot that clearly tells us, yes, this is a comedy, and yes, these people are ridiculous, but also alerting us to the fact that Lee is not playing around here.

Lee again uses Birth in a later scene where it once more speaks to the formal complexity of the film. One of the most important of Griffith's innovations was parallel editing (known today as cross-cutting). In a nutshell, parallel editing is when two separate actions from two separate locations are intercut to suggest they are happening simultaneously, often, but not always, to heighten tension. However, Lee's genius in this scene is that he uses Birth to mock the Klan by way of, yep, parallel editing. As the KKK sit down to watch Birth, Lee intercuts them with Jerome Turner (Harry Belafonte) telling the story of the lynching of Jesse Washington, which saw a crowd of over 10,000 people in Waco cheering on as his testicles and fingers were cut off, after which he was slowly burned to death by being continually raised over a fire. Lee uses parallel editing here so as to have one scene comment on the other - he is literally using Birth's own innovations against it and what it represents.

But what is Lee's point? Simply put, he is condemning the cultural instability of the US in 2018, with its entrenched institutional racism, hateful rhetoric masquerading as national pride, the breakdown of the distinction between xenophobia and patriotism, and the transition of hate crimes from the fringes of society into the realm of social acceptability. The film suggests that organisational racism once existed half-way between the absurd and the dangerous, but in recent years, it has moved in the wrong direction. The closing montage, featuring footage of the Unite the Right rally and Trump's asinine response, drops all pretence of humour, and becomes very much a state-of-the-nation address.

All of this is not to say the film is perfect, however. For example, how he employs the double dolly shot (which he has used throughout his filmography to suggest characters' inability to control their own actions as they are inexorably pushed forward, divested of the contextualisation of their environment), suggests that orthodox black activism and underground black militancy must combine forces in the face of hate. The film also glosses over Stallworth's time in COINTELPRO, where he worked to sabotage radical black organisations. Additionally, a fictional explosion towards the end of the story serves to distastefully simplify everything, once more making the KKK look foolish, whilst also positing Stallworth as a clichéd movie hero, something Lee has avoided up until this point.

These are relatively minor complaints, however. Look, Lee is far from my favourite filmmaker, and he himself has been justifiably accused of racism on multiple occasions. None of that, however, changes the fact that this is an hilarious, powerful, insightful, and frightening piece of work.… Expand

Una película que funciona como un policial serio, por momentos, pero no deja de ser muy entretenida. Valiéndose de un humor irónico y sarcástico Lee trae una historia, que como pocas reflexiona sobre un tema delicado y necesario, como el año pasado Jordan Peele (quien produce esta película) demostró con ¡Huye! Lo mejor de la película es el final, una escena tenso y bien filmada, pero a la vez grotesca en indignante de ataques raciales reales, mostrando la porquería de realidad (como anuncia en el trailer) en la que aún se vive. También es destacable la escena en donde vemos a un hombre que recuerda el revuelo que causo la película El nacimiento de una nación, que como se explica, fue la causante del resurgimiento del KkKlan.

Un recuento de las película de explotación de los 70´s, con un gran elenco y un mensaje contundente y claro. De lo mejor del año… Expand

BLACKKKLANSMAN wears a disguise but won't dodge any bullet, letting all the hates flows and gauging it into entertaining comedy where both Klu Klux Klan and its counterpart have moment to be ludicrous or horrifying and both are supremely powerful.

Spicke Lee reconoce la fortaleza que la lección de su #película tiene, sin embargo, la combinación de humores, aunque anima al público, también le quita intensidad al proyecto. Por lo tanto, la actuación se contrarresta y no hay un momento dramático central en la historia que esté liderado por el elenco principal. Aunque sí hay un momento clímax, este se construye plenamente por el desarrollo de eventos y la música, la cual, interpuesta entre la comedia y el drama, solo agrega una sensación de exageración.
Y aunque sí hay una poética visual, esta no se encuentra en el cuerpo de la narración y solo se presenta cuando la dirección decide agregar decoración visual a la esencia de ésta. Por ultimo, la película cuenta con un final algo encimado. Aunque es correcto y tiene éxito en generar un impacto y conciencia social, este trata de cerrar el ambiente de la película con cierta intensidad que no precisamente arregla el temple del proyecto total. Based in a real life story, Ron Stallworth, performed by John David Washington (Son of Denzel Washington), is a black undercover cop that managed to infiltrate to the KKK organization to avoid a tragical social confrontation.
Spike Lee knows the strength of the lesson that his movie has, nevertheless, the combination of humor, if it animates the public, also takes the intensity away of the project. So, the acting counteracts and there's not a central dramatic moment in the story led by the principal cast. Even though there's a climax moment, this is mostly done by the development of the events and the music, which, in between the comedy and the drama, only adds a sensation of exaggeration. And even though there's a visual poetic, this is not in the body of the narration and it's presented only when the direction decides to add a visual decoration to the essence of it. At last, the movie has an ending quite topped. Even though it's correct and succeeds to give a social impact and consciousness, the movie tries to close the ambient of the movie with certain intensity that doesn't really fix the temper of the whole project. Being honest, I'm not really familiarized with the cinema of Spike Lee, but, independently of the social and cinematographic context of the director, "BlacKkKlansman" is an entertaining development of events to watch with a cherry too sweet for a cake that is of easy digest.… Expand

The same is true of Lee’s latest film, the creatively helmed BlacKkKlansman, a fictionalised telling of the memoir of black Colorado cop, Ron Stallworth and his risky infiltration of the Ku Klux Klan. Here, Spike Lee is at his best, painting an enticing tonal mix of humour and horror that feels all too topical.
Son of Denzel, John David Washington stars as Stallworth, the so-called “Jackie Robinson of the Colorado Springs Police Department” and the first black officer. Ron’s ethnic background makes him the man for an undercover mission spying on black activist Kwame Ture (Corey Hawkins), as he excites the city’s discontented African-American community. Soon enough, however, Ron is caught up at the other end of the racial spectrum as he and partner Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) attempt to infiltrate their local chapter of the KKK by posing as a budding white supremacist. It’s a life-risking double act as Flip becomes the “face” of Ron Stallworth, as the real Ron rises the ranks through incidental phone calls with KKK Grand Wizard David Duke (Topher Grace).
BlacKkKlansman is a film that presents racism in an interesting way, almost as a dichotomy between the ridiculous and threatening. The script is a genius work, jolting along with the speed of a bullet between moments of almost absurdist comedy to those of darker truth. A particularly good example is that of a racist couple cosying up to one another in bed, dreamily discussing their plans for homemade terrorism. This is a film where white supremacy is served with cheese and crackers and social commentary is accompanied by bizarre humour. Lee does a superb job of balancing these tones, catching the laughs in one’s throat within a net of horror. This clashing approach continues throughout the film, even into Terence Blanchard’s innovative score, which jumps from the safety of strings to impassioned guitar riffs.
Washington and Driver are two very-well cast leads; the former’s delightfully dry yet nuanced performance allows the film to stay grounded. Driver’s performance is equally captivating; in many ways, Flip has the scarier side of the job, having to meet the members of the Klan face to face hoping they believe the caricature and stay masked to his Jewish heritage. An opening cameo by Trump-impersonator himself, Alec Baldwin reminds one of the trenchant relevance of Lee’s film; the costume design and jukebox soundtrack lend it all the authenticity of a 70s period piece, but the inclusion of Trumpist slurs, ironic asides and a heart wrenching final sequence remind us that BlacKkKlansman is very much a film for today. There are points where the film seems a little too self-aware, but perhaps it is intended to be; from the profane tagline right to the end credits, Lee is truly in control of his craft and the message he wants to put forward. Performances by Washington and Driver are brilliant and credit is due to Get Out’s Jordan Peele for the pitch, but the real star here is Spike Lee. With BlacKkKlansman, the director returns to form with satire as it should be; sickeningly hilarious, yet equally as shocking and, most of all, with something important to say.… Expand

Spike Lee’s career is full of peaks and valleys. Lee has always been aware of the power of film to directly and indirectly affect and influence audiences. At times, he can be overly didactic and forget to capture viewer attentions with entertainment. Other times he perfectly blends his skills as a visual storyteller with a message or issue he wants to address with incredible results. His latest film, BlacKkKlansman, is definitely a peak. It tells the unbelievably true story of Ron Stallworth, a black undercover police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in Colorado Springs in the 1970’s. Lee, working with a screenplay by Charlie Wachtel & David Rabinowitz and Kevin Willmott & himself, based on Stallworth’s book, bundles a true story, a crime thriller, and a social drama about race and racism together with a lively and even comedic tone for a film that is as entertaining as it is unsettling.

John David Washington (yes, Denzel’s son) plays Ron Stallworth, the first black police officer in Colorado Springs. Stallworth begins his career in the records room but after he is reassigned to the intelligence unit, he begins an investigation into the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. The rookie Stallworth makes a rookie mistake, however, and gives his real name to the Klan recruiter he speaks to over the phone. So, when the Klan wants to meet him, Stallworth enlists fellow undercover cop Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) to pose as white Ron Stallworth in person while he pretends to be white Ron Stallworth over the phone. Like I said, an unbelievable true story.

John David Washington handles both the lighter and heavier material in BlackKklansman with ease. His character never saw any conflict in being a both cop and a black person until he meets and begins a potential romance with Patrice (Laura Herrier) the head of the Black Student Union he was initially assigned to investigate. Adam Driver gives a great low-key performance as Flip. Driver portrays him as an average person that is very good at his job but finds himself in an unusual, extraordinary situation. It’s the kind of subtle performance that usually gets overlooked during awards season but Driver has managed to pick up a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Stallworth’s infiltration of the Klan over the phone leads to many conversations with the head of the KKK, David Duke. Topher Graceplays Duke almost too well, capturing the insidious affability and unassuming presence that was meant to be the new face of the Klan.

Throughout BlacKkKlansman, other movies are referenced to show the power of cinema in regards to race and culture. The movie opens with one of the most famous shots from Gone With the Wind and a recreation of a racist propaganda film from the 1950’s. The classic Tarzan movies and Blaxploitation films are also referenced. The most emotionally affecting scene for me comes when Harry Belafonte, as an elderly speaker at a Black Student Union gathering, shares how a harrowing injustice he witnessed as a boy was inspired by the silent epic The Birth of a Nation. In 1915, D.W. Griffith, a pioneer of early filmmaking who invented much of the basic language of cinema, made the first big budget, epic film. It portrayed the KKK as the heroes and protectors of post-Civil War white Southerners. After its release, it inspired hate crimes and revived the long extinct KKK. Film historians have long wrestled with how to present or teach The Birth of a Nation; it’s importance to film history is as undeniable as the movie is revolting. I think Spike Lee has finally found a way to present both the importance and the horrendous nature of The Birth of a Nation.

BlacKkKlansman seems to be unsure of what note it wants to leave the audience on. It is a very entertaining and even comedic story but also a serious one dealing with problems that are still unfortunately relevant today. Lee inserts real footage from the Charlottesville protests to emphasize that the KKK is still a real and dangerous threat (and of course he is correct). Though this documentary footage packs a powerful emotional punch, it would in any context and feels inorganically tacked on. It is one of a few missteps in an otherwise entertaining and powerful piece of cinema.… Expand

I liked the fact that the black cop defends that not all cops are bad, calling on both sides of the extremism. I would prefer if they didn't had dismissed the calling for violence made by the black extremist as "...just talk, retoric..." but I also understand the dificulty the character has to admit that his side of the conflict also has extremists.… Expand

A fantastic movie, and one of my favorite movies of 2018. The writing is really good with tons of funny jokes and good drama and tension that really make this movie very entertaining to watch.

The fact that this is a story about an undercover mission leads the audiences to a lot of tension through the entire movie and that's what kept me invested in the movie all the time. The performances are really good, all the actors do a great job playing their characters and made them really charismatic and fun to watch. Obviously this has social commentary about topics like racism and while sometimes it's really on-the-nose it's never annoying or forced, it leads to shocking and interesting scenes and dialogue that talks about the issues back then and that can be also relatable for today.

The only complaint I might have was the anticlimatic ending, containing some clips from actual real world footage that feel forced. But a bad ending doesn't really change my opinion and I still think this is a great movie.… Expand

Very hysterically funny. The Black Cop did a really good job talking like a White Man, especially when he talked to Duke in the Phone, Duke got really fooled throughout the movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a film based on a true story and that made me interested in it. The cast is good (particularly John David Washington and Adam Driver) and the way the plot develops is good. Its worth hanging around for the final scene, which I thought was quite satisfying. It certainly highlights how horrendous the KKK are, for their vile views and some of the nonsense their followers believe. I'd hope those who support such organisations wouldn't find anything positive about them when watching such a film but then, who knows these days frankly. I thought it was a good film as a piece of social commentary certainly - quite how the main character managed not to lose his what-not when conversing with members of the local 'Klan' is, quite frankly, beyond me. I would recommend this film, yes. It makes for an understandably sobering watch with obviously strong language featured, including strong racial slurs but then of course that makes it more realistic I suppose, as sad as that is.… Expand

The story is already great, and the execution is even better. The cinematography and writing are very good, however some less desirable aspects of Spike Lee’s style seep in when paralleling Donald Trump. Not that I even disagree with the comparison, but it was done with no level of subtlety, unlike the other very nuanced dialogue. The acting steals the show, John David Washington and Adam Driver are amazing as the two main leads. I did mention before about ‘less desirable aspects’ of Spike Lee’s style, but he does have some nice moments where his personality shines through, particularly when the main character is talking to the love interest about their favourite Blaxploitation heroes. Overall, a great film, definitely check it out.… Expand

Based on true story, but the film won Academy award for ”best adapted screenplay” which means this film isn’t 100% true story, and that could be pros and cons of it. The pros obviously are; it already had outrageously great source material while the cons doubtingly are; will they add some fictional stuff that fits for its source material?

In my opinion, they did. I’m so confident to say Spike Lee do the right thing since the openning scene, he blended his own personal criticism on film history (when Spike was in NYU film school) with the true story of Ron Stallworth flawlessly by their well-crafted screenplay.

I’ve seen some people complained about its comedic vibes that apparently ruined the mood of this film, which I totally disagree… I mean, seeing those american white supremacists were completely blindfolded by black cop is wonderfully pure joke and joy, isn't this what we call comedy? Plus, many stupid ways of how they tried to describe themselves what true white people is, is ridiculously icing on top for me.

Beside the comedic vibes, it firmly holds its anti-racism messages all along. I believed Spike Lee only used those comedic vibes just to make audiences put their guards down for awhile, before he threw his hardest-hitting punch at the end of the film solidly.… Expand

The cast is a fantastic. John Washington and Adam Driver both did splendid work. You may start liking both characters and their bonding. This shows how much pure acting they did. Director Spike Lee did a great job in converting a real life story into a movie but I have a complaint. He should not have added fictional events in this movie like main character's girlfriend and bombing scene. If you are making a real life story, then I don't find a reason to add some fictional things when there's a lot to tell. Also, at some points the movie suffers from pacing but it doesn't alter your experience. You will still enjoy it. The drama, tense, comedy everything was blend perfectly. It all looked natural, nothing like acting or scripted. Overall, a very nice movie which I would suggest everyone to give a try.… Expand
