The pure and innocent Nina (Natalie Portman) is almost thirty years old, but lives a girl's life under her oppressive mother, and all her life centers on her ballet career. When she is granted the part of the Swan Queen in Tchaikovsky's ballet, she must face the darker depths of her soul to embody the Black Swan as well as the White. Widely considered a "woman's movie", I totally agree, as it is an examination of a female soul just as much as an artists' soul, and it is totally satisfying and shaking. Natalie Portman is wonderful, Darren Arronofsky's direction visualises a deeply dark script, and Tchaikovsky's beautiful music helps soften the content a bit. I recommend this poetic and beautiful movie to all art lovers. ( And there are still some who say ballet isn't serious....? ) Expand

This is the definition of a Masterpiece!! it's a work of art. beautifully unveils the conflict of being perfect and the encounter of humans with their Unconscious mind. also could be a journey into a mind with Bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

She wants at all costs to hold mother's ambition: see his daughter as "prima ballerina". But things go wrong when a rival, out of nowhere, threatens to steal it. Fortunately for both, "The Swan Lake" is a piece that requires two protagonists: the White Swan, sweet and gentle, and the Black Swan, malicious and seductive. While Nina is perfect for the White Swan, she will have to prepare herself for the other part, and goes in search of her own malice. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, it has screenplay by Mark Heyman, Andres Heinz and John J. McLaughlin, and features Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey and Vincent Cassel in the lead roles.

We are facing an interesting film, which deals with the intense rivalries of the ballet world and the psychological consequences that they can cause. In fact, the script isn't bad but, at a certain point, becomes a bit predictable. The plot is silent with regard to mental and psychological health of Nina, but imply them traumas and repressions of her past. The end of the film is excellent, but the public never gets to see clearly where the reality ends and begins the imagination. The cast worked well and most of the actors did a good performance, yet not too surprising. Natalie Portman is the exception: she got an exceptional performance and gave her character a huge and very rich psychological depth. I also liked the characterization and costumes, that sparkled in some scenes. And Tchaikovsky's music is always good in any soundtrack.

This film is quite good, despite some minor flaws and predictability. It works, entertains, thrills and sometimes shocks. Could be better? Yes, but it's not bad the way it is.

Darren Aronofsky is a very lofty director, with most of his oeuvre being shrouded in meaning and craftsmanship. Where Black Swan differs fromDarren Aronofsky is a very lofty director, with most of his oeuvre being shrouded in meaning and craftsmanship. In this regard, Black Swan is no different, with its psychedelic fever dream of a presentation. Where Black Swan differs from Aronofsky’s other works, Mother!, Requiem for a Dream, and Pi, is in its intensity. Black Swan is extremely unrelenting, presenting half-truths and half-lies all while promising viewers with a seemingly innocent premise. The movie may seem to be a sports movie about one dedicated athlete’s journey to stardom in ballet, but Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) is a tragic hero, afflicted with deep trauma and mental health issues. Nina, a child of abuse, is thrust into a vividly sexual and illicit world at the crossroads of her encounter with Mila Kunis’ character, Odile. Black Swan is a very intense and vividly beautiful experience that leaves with a tragically sad note. The movie has ups and downs and is a euphoric roller coaster and is extremely epic and rewarding. So much value can be derived from the movie and the movie can be continually revisited, Black Swan truly is one of the best films of the decade. Expand

And by that I mean that besides that she possess a flaw that leads to her downfall, which she must accept with honour, we, the audience, shouldn't expect to be surprised by the ending; it's often kinda predictable. With that being said, we must know that Aronofsky's task is that of filling the movie with a sense of dread and macabre atmosphere in order to forebode the tragic ending, while pushing the envelope as much as he can in order to make everything seem original, and hence unexpected.

The first thing is actually what Darren Aronofsky excels at. And in Black Swan, Aronofsky created a nightmarish surrealistic ambiance; using some of the most effective, if not the most violent, graphic gory images he ever used in his movies, and utilizing the sound almost as perfect as he did in Requiem for a Dream, only this time not just to disturb, but also to scare and daunt. In doing so, Aronofsky went far beyond foreshadowing Nina's dreadful inevitable downfall, making us feel Nina's pain as if we became her; Aronofsky made my feathery skin crawls!

Alas, Black Swan's visual imagery sadly lacks creativity. Most of the symbolic imagery I felt that they are quite familiar, and that I had seen many times before. That said, the visceral and bold direction of Aronofsky made up for that with genuine intensity.

The vague and mysterious nature of the characters and their actions adds up to the uniqueness of the movie, especially as they don't tarnish the drama, nor reject the logic for the sake of surrealism. I enjoyed interpreting the characters' motives, actions, and even purposes and roles in the story. The way they are represented can feel a bit messy sometimes, though. I think that what made me believe that the movie is a bit convoluted for its own good, and that Aronofsky tried too hard to give us as many reasons as he could to persuade us that Nina deserves her tragic fate while Nina's "hamartia" is crystal clear from hundred miles away in a most play-like way.

The performances are all truly outstanding. As for Natalie Portman, she delivered what is indisputably her fantastic career's best performance; she was simply Perfect!

Also again this movie is very much not for the squeamish, I admit I found myself wincing and wanting to look away on ocassion, guessing what was going to happen, which I'll mention a bit more about later on in this review.

The relationship between Nina and her trainer Thomas is quite clearly strained - his advances being not wanted at first, though as Nina becomes more drawn into the world of ballet through being given the prestiguous queen swan role, she sees things differently, I suppose. Its really quite a claustrophobic movie I feel, the characters having different agendas and Nina finding herself lost - it seems clear whats going on at first but slowly we realise that something more sinister is at hand, which makes you question what you see.

The camerawork is done in such a way that makes it feel more realistic, following behind her (in a documentary sort of style I suppose) with rough, jagged movement as she walks or runs down the corridors at the ballet school. These jagged type movements are matched by smoother, more 'direct/professional' type shots highlighting scenes while the play is taking place on stage and during rehearsals.

This movie includes multiple scenes with blood and what could be perceived as self harm, so be aware of that - this is one reason why I winced a little as mentioned earlier on.

As you can tell, its quite a dark and depressing movie but its quite gripping and it certainly leaves you questioning things and guessing - at one hour and forty minutes in length, its a good length as well, not too padded out yet not entirely rushed either.

I felt that the cast did well in their character portrayals, both good and bad, they were quite convincing. I'm aware that Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis have been the two main cast members that have received praise in the media etc. for this movie (at least as far as I remember hearing anyway), so instead in this review I'd like to single out Vincent Cassel, who plays Thomas Leroy, Nina's trainer. He has quite a sinister look about him and I felt he was particularly well portrayed.

It did have the feel of a well made movie, its just not one that everyone will necessarily enjoy - there are scenes of a sexual nature which could easily embarrass some (this is probably not a title you'd want to watch with your parents) and also I should probably add that there are both scenes of heterosexual and homosexual acts if but brief and mainly hinted at I suppose, so yes this isn't for everyone quite clearly but, as with others, for what it is, I thought it was competently made.

I'd also like to add that its more about Nina as a character than the world of ballet itself, though its her newly earnt title in this particularly all-or-nothing type world which leads her to her ultimate journey - of couse if you know the rough story, you should be ok with that though.

I felt that the movie finished with a pleasing crescendo (as such) which was a fitting ending - I suppose its up to you to decide how much of what we see is indeed reality but I thought it was fairly impressive anyway. Now whether I think its worth all the awards and praise it received it perhaps debatable, I'm not sure I'd say its entirely excellent somehow but I'd certainly say its very good. One thing I wasn't entirely keen on was ocassional use of CGI, which I felt was a bit over the top somehow, they were perhaps getting a little carried away adding those parts, although I suppose they do their 'job' to question, or highlight, Nina's state of mind at that particular time.

This is a movie you have to concentrate on to become pulled into Nina's world and to try to dissect what's going on and what she's seeing - I think this movie probably would live up to multiple viewings, which is a plus.

Nina shows herself as a sweet and afraid-ish woman, controlled by an opressive mother, that finds difficulties on searching for her "black" side, search that walks with the movie 'till its end. For me, even though the plot is very interesting, I think the overall work was very well done. It was good and kept me on it, specially when the allucinations scenes came up, you really needed to think if they were real or not, which for me was good, because it made me think about what I was watching and keep on doing so.
Overall, It captivated me through it and the plot made me stick to the screen and finish the movie, cinematography was outstanding, music was fantastic, and Natalie Portman did an amazing job portraying Nina.

The cost of perfection is too much!
Take it with the cost of life or leave it!
"It was good experience but it could be more clear and more detailed and more fun so that you could watch it for a couple of times and enjoy."
