I admit to walking about before the climax because of how angered I was at this film. The claim that all men fit into the rape culture, who hate women, and support an overruling patriarchy is disgusting, and the people behind this filth should be ashamed. This garbage deeply offended me not as a man, but as a person. You want gender equality so bad, stop making one side seem as if they want to watch the world burn alongside one whole gender of people. Literally almost nothing happens in this films... one person dies at the beginning that's the only thing interesting. The rest is just the preachiest movie ever second to the Last Jedi. It feels like this film was focused on political messaging"Fight the patriarchy" than actually being a genuine good horror flick. The killer element was weak compared to classic horror icons like Jason,Leather etc. Also, making the characters into action hero bad asses that fight back makes the film less scary. This film does the original film injustice...Black Christmas it was a boring movie with bland preachy characters who u would want to see them die, crappy dialogue with some good imagery. A social justice movie mascaraing as a horror movie.
I will repeat myself...stop giving activists a job or otherwise have them focus on story first, character second, politics last!

And its sudden announcement in June was like snow on one’s head. What kind of interest can there be in the cult proto-slasher of 1974? Especially after the notorious 2006s remake, which many still either recall as a nightmare or consider it a comedy because of its torture porn, plot holes, and the ridiculous killer’s backstory? These two Black Christmases would remain a typical tandem of the “80s original / XXI century studio alteration”, but…

The rights to the concept were bought by Blumhouse with director Sophia Takal and screenwriter April Wolfe to lead the newest incarnation. Takal had previously shot some lazy indie thriller about mean female friendship and a full-length episode of the anthology series “Into the Dark” ...also about mean female friendship. And with New Year's entourage. Obviously, everything starts there. These two saw the opportunity to depict all of their modern ideas, only with some snow and toothless scrimers.

Do not hope to find any tribute to the original **** Claudette instead of 1974s cat Claude) and an attempt to strangle one of the villains with polyethylene. Instead, we have a bunch of blank college girls, one of whom, Riley (Imogen Poots), suffers from emotional trauma after being raped by one of the frat bros, who escaped punishment and even dared to return to college. But the girls have worse problems: the tough student Chris (Aleyse Shannon) demands the dismissal of one of the old-school professor for his boomer-ish way of teaching. While Professor Gelson (Cary Elwes) is trolling the suffragists of the 21st century by quoting the well-known anti-feminist Camille Paglia, female students begin to disappear. And if nobody gave a **** about the horribly acting blonde girl from literally every movie’s trailers (Lucy Curry), the further disappearances begin to slowly alarm. The police shrugs and isn’t eager to do anything (by the way, another curtsy to the original), so Riley begins her own investigation.

Takal and Wolfe are as humble as a jackhammer when it’s about the man which are either evil or stupid. An malicious cultist professor with his toxic bloodhound on a chain, annoying boyfriends who can either start a fight out of nothing or stutter while talking to a girl. The authors’ ideas ends so quickly that they even use supernatural power, led by the late founder of the college - a white privileged slaver man of his 1800s, who was sure that women would occupy his stronghold of knowledge one day, and then the males must be able to defend... defend what? Oh, sorry, they never explain it anyway. They just hate women, that’s all, bite it. No Billy, no Agnes, no real freedom from male opinion. Somewhere in 1974, Jess Bradford sighs heavily while firmly announcing to her boyfriend the decision to have an abortion. Turns out that women's rights aren’t about freedom of choice, but about driving away the “white men science” from universities.

Black Christmas doesn't want to be a horror movie. In fact, it doesn’t want to be a film. But it wants to be an essay, which for whatever reason was wrapped in Christmas light. An essay, albeit with a budget of $ 5,000,000, is not capable of being exciting and thrilling. Even in others negative reviews, only Imogen Poots can be praised for the role of the emotionally injured, but strong by her spirit, but she is underestimated by the scriptwriters that did not want to give her character some decent development. Cary Elves wasn’t told this isn’t another “Saw”, and therefore something like “game over” is about to burst from his terribly taut smile. The rest of the cast is the most typical cannon fodder, as one of the girls behaves so cringy while interacting with the intruder as if she wanted to end all of this as soon as possible. It’s also hilarious that there are two sorority houses, and the second one is shown briefly in the midst of their own attack. All for the sake of the final fight, so that there could me more female combat extras.

The film is mostly praised for showing certain socially disturbing topics familiar to many… well, feminists. Campus abuse and rapes were described in the great “The Hunting Ground”, and the pointless gory gender violence was shown in epic “Assassination Nation”. What do we get in “Black Christmas” for millennials? The fear of walking down the street alone at night, the keys compressed in a shaking fist, and the unexplained progressive ladies’ annoyance with the “not all men".

Black Christmas is a boring, bloodless thriller that is radical in its beliefs and incapable of accepting a bit of a different opinion, shot for the fun of snowflakes and all kinds of warriors for the rights of all disenfranchised. Fortunately, this movie ceases to be associated with its predecessors as soon as it changes its name.

Much to my dismay, I soon came to realize that I had payed for three tickets just to be stereotyped and insulted for 1 hour and 33 minutes by the titular protagonist group of four vitriolic, radical Mu Kappa Epsilon sorority girls Riley Stone, Marty, Kris, and Jesse under the presumption that all white men are sexist, rapist, and racist patriarchal conspirators that seek to oppress woman because of their masculinity. Any character that spoke out and called their perspective into question is immediately labeled and antagonized by the cast and killed in an act of bias without question while forcing their victim propaganda with little context regarding why we should feel the way these characters do, and why we should even care. Any sense of dread and tension gradually dissipates as their agenda ignores rational thought and outright portrays white men as blatantly scheming, bumbling, manipulative, angry stalkers that view woman as nothing more than subservient objects below them. This movie was a disgusting, hypocritically racist, shameful waste of time made by cynical hacks that could only prove their point by killing and subjugating those who have their own opinions. Wasting my time and money as well as putting both my family members and I in a bad mood, this is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Expand

decent acting, literally everything else was terrible

not only were the "scares" predictable they couldnt even make a jump scare work, like how do you mess up that up?

and the feminist message whether you align yourself with it or not, was heavy handed, which is putting it lightly. at one point of the film the protagonist group is confronting the arch enemy and they say something along the lines of "youre crazy, unhinged and insane" to which he replies with "no, im just male"
i never made a bigger groan in a cinema before in my life, i just hope the actor was paid enough to cover his lost dignity

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. terrible film. All these women who think it's only men who think it's bad, are talking **** and if that's how sjw's really do act then they're a disgrace to women. Like it said, not all men are **** and as a female who works round a lot of men, I find so called "feminism" these day's very embarrassing. Anyway, I thought the theme of the film was stupid, the acting pretty poor, especially the end fight where you've got someone using a bow to hit and stab people with, even though she's got arrows, and it's actually working. I wish they would've at least used girl's who could actually look like they know how to fight and it may have been slightly more believable that they managed to overpower a lot of men with massive paddle's for weapon's. And just a side note, there are plenty of women with high paid and high powered job's who have worked hard to get there, not by trying to get rid of men or by getting a job just because they're female, which is the lazy way that feminist's these day's are doing Expand

Instead, it's a horror movie with propaganda littered throughout it. Some of the sentiment is good (women should be empowered and men need to keep their hands to themselves) but the dialogue is just so poorly written. We are told the morals that the writers want us to hear, instead of shown them.

All the male characters are creeps or unwitting weak idiots. The women are all heroic badasses or treacherous pickmeishas. There's 0 subtlety or depth to any of the characters.

What I did like: The acting wasn't half bad, and the premise for the villains was actually scary. Several characters appear to be suspicious and there's a twist that I liked.

For a recent movie that promotes its ideology far better and that is actually scary, I recommend Get Out.

It's anything but, and the filmmakers would have impressed more if they'd refrained from self-indulgently making Camile Paglia a villain and demonstrated basic competency in executing the slasher formula. That might have made this movie intelligent. Slashers looks easy, but as this failure demonstrates, the good ones are well crafted with set-ups and payoffs. This film doesn't reward our attention. We're treated to extended tedium and meandering in a muddled first act that worsens until the final reveal, which is like something out of a cartoony television movie about black magic. It's a shame because the lead actress is charismatic and talented and would have done wonders with a good script. Skip this one as the product of children and, instead, see what adults can make of the slasher formula, namely, the Bob Clark original, which is infinitely superior to this drivel. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Black Christmas (2019)

Sinopsis:

Wow, this, the second attempt at a Black Christmas remake, is a misguidedly bad film.

This movie carries a heavy pro-women, anti-misogyny/patriarchal-control-of-the-system (particularly in the college environment) vibe to the whole thing. Let me make it clear that I support the message, it's the way it's executed that I have a problem with. You ever went to an original college play because of a class or to support a friend, and it feels like it's trying to be deep about something, but you can't stand it? This is that movie in a nutshell. (In the director/co-screenwriter and other co-screenwriter's defense, this film had a pretty short production schedule. Not saying the movie would've been better necessarily, just saying.)

The movie beats you over the head with the message. Plot and dialogue comes in second, less than second. The characters are extremely frustrating as they act and talk in a way that isn't plausible at all. A lot of them aren't people, just talking points. There are a lot of one-dimensional misogynists in this film who say nothing but the most obvious and basic chauvinistic lines. It gets really painful. Also, the killer's or killers' plan has so many loopholes.
I know that horror movies often require a suspension of disbelief but even this sinks way below an accordingly low bar.

You can see where the plot is going pretty early on, which makes waiting through the slow-paced first two thirds of the film a pain.

In the brief moments where people aren't speaking for or against the equality of women, there are a few lines that could've been funny, but none of the cast makes the dialogue work, especially Brittany Grady, who is supposed to be comic relief. Veteran actor Cary Elwes is in this and even he gives a terrible performance.

As for the actual horror in this, there are a few good weapon ideas but there isn't enough to salvage the film. The movie was originally R-rated but got cut down to PG-13 which hurt it. I'm not one of those "R-rated horror movies only" guys, but the problem is that the editor clearly just ended a couple kills abruptly. There was no attempt to reshoot or reedit scenes to make them run smoothly. If you like horror but not rape in your horror be forewarned that this movie will get uncomfortable.

To the movie's credit, the cinematography is good. There are a few post-kill shots that are effective. The one major thing this movie has in common with the original is that it goes with this stark reality look to it. There is an effectively cold feel to the whole thing. The campus and surrounding houses look like a real college environment.

I'd say this is about as bad as the last Black Christmas remake just in a different way. You want to see a Christmas-themed horror film? I suggest the original or Krampus.

To further its message, mind controlled frat pledges are out to invade sorority houses and murder as many "sisters" as possible. Lame. Real lame. But let's consider our average Greek student - I went to college with these creeps, and all I ever got and continue to "get" is that the Greek organizations are nothing but party houses, rape parties and a playground for ultra rich little **** who are grooming themselves to be politicians (GOP), bankers, lawyers and other such careers, while the women practice the art of being incredibly rude and snide to outsiders and spend weekends throwing up and not remembering what they did. Then it's rich husband material for them. So, in a clash between a fraternity and a sorority, and tough luck if you were a Greek, you know how you acted, I would prefer both sides lose. In a way they do. This movie is beyond cliche, wouldn't scare a sparrow, and its feminist diatribe is totally unconvincing and frankly very insulting to those of us men who are not misogynistic pigs. "Animal House" couldn't have portrayed a frat or sorority house any more accurately. This is beyond Mystery Science Theater/"Sharknado" stupid. It tries to be truly scary, to make a salient and societal point, and just comes across as the kind of horror movie you might expect a bright girl in a Girl Scout troop to make. Probably the worst picture of 2019. Expand

A testament to Hollywood's current dedication to bringing its postmodernist values and "socially enlightened" point of view to us, the stupid, unwashed masses rather than entertaining, this film is an utter failure on every level.

This is probably the worst directed film I've ever watched in my entire life.

An unscary, terribly written insult to the fantastic original. Preachy, dull and terribly directed. The most frustrating kind of movie watch and my biggest disappointment of 2019.

It took me about 40 minutes to realize that this is not a Rated-R horror film. Who makes a PG-13 horror these days??? It's so tame. The acting is decent, but it's just undercooked in a serious way.

This might sound sacrilegious to write this, but the filmmakers would have benefitted from watching a few films by Roman Polanski (and others) to learn how to craft the requisite scares that the film desperately needs. The film also fails as a social satire or dark comedy. Even with the best of intentions, you still need to understand the conventions of the type of film you are making and either adhere to those conventions or cleverly break then. Expand

We had some good screams and felt like it wasn’t over the top with the woman vs man topic. I think most complaining about that here are likely men...lol. Anyway, the sorority girls have called out a frat boy who raped one of the sisters and now sisters are being targeted by unknown, hooded people. It is not so bad as a slasher movie. I didn’t look most of the time, but don’t feel it was all belabored. We had some moments where we just had to shake our heads at these girls and their bad judgement. All in all, not great, but not horrible. As far as scary movies go, it is strictly middle of the road and skippable. But, we are diehards and see pretty much any scary movie that comes along. This was not the worst we have seen. Expand

I understand that there is another remake that was released in 2006 but I haven't seen it and frankly I wasn't interested in this one but you cannot have an opinion without seeing so here we are.

The strong feminist charge is understood and that doesn't make it a bad movie. What makes it a bad movie is how unimaginative its development is and that's where the problem comes about because everything is lost due to the inability to know where the plot wants to go.

It's clear that lies in the horror genre but it's never scary and the social topics of its message are weak and that unbalances the tone and therefore the film is neither effective as horror nor as a social commentary.

It was a mixture to which they couldn't give a more cohesive style and consequently ends up derailing loudly.

And the truth is that despite its "Slay Girls" marketing campaign the film is perfectly serviceable genre movie. In fact very few things actually separate it from its group. Basically a group of sorority girls is targeted by a fraternity with insidious intentions. Its really nothing new especially if you've seen the tv show Buffy the Vampire Slayer which this actually feels like an extended episode of. And I say that with admiration because that's my favorite show. As the film goes on the "woke" gets to be a touch too much towards the finale but it is entertaining and the points that are made in this genre themed battle of the sexes is really quite intriguing. The kills happen mostly off screen and because the killers are quite menacing some pay off gore would have been appreciated with an R rating. That being said I appreciated all the clever bits to the exorcist 3 homage to the rakes on mistletoe and women rougeing their cheeks. It all leads up to a girl power finale that's cheer worthy. In the end it's a refreshing take on expected material that deserves way more of the right attention than it's been getting.

Budget: $5m
Domestic Box Office: $10m
Worldwide Box Office: $19m

A lot of men leaving reviews seem triggered by this movie. That alone should tell you enough about whether or not you should see it.

I’ve gone off Blumhouse films, there are too many average or bad ones. This one is well acted, looks beautiful, sounds amazing but that will only carry it so far. The first half of the film is a dull and very typical slasher with a convincing eighties style. The second half is a slasher with a slight twist which I won't ruin. It's not gory. It's not really like the original except for the setting and slasher vibes. The action is not engaging. Not terrible but also not good, simple average and forgettable. Expand

Not as bad as the 2006 remake. The biggest crime this film committed is that it lacks imagination. Its a dull somewhat boring film that lacks scares and would have greatly benefitted from an R rating.

A feminist horror flick that lacks nuance in its feminism and thrills in its horror. But it should be applauded for reinterpreting rather than just retreading the original.
