It was better than I thought it was going to be, due to the fact that I've always thought both Jared Leto and Margot Robbie were miscast as the duo. While I still believe she's wrong for the role, Robbie is nonetheless an excellent actor and she gives us a serviceable Harley Quinn.

HQ is not a complex character. DC seems to put together its best movies when it capitalizes on complexity. She's hot, crazy, fun, dangerous -- but not complicated. That said, the writers did an excellent job with the script, and I appreciated the points where they weren't afraid to poke fun at themselves for the inclusion of an 80's cop cliche.

Still, pacing was a problem and I never got the sense that we were seeing enough character development to justify the slow parts of the movie. The action sequences were all entertaining and very well done.

I wish they hadn't decided to push for an "R" rating. The swearing and the next-level violence seemed gratuitous, lending nothing to further the characters or the plot. Whereas JOKER demanded it, this film does not.

For what it is -- a fun comic book romp based on static characters -- I enjoyed it, but I won't be prioritizing a second viewing.

This movie just falls flat.
Harley Quinn is one of the more intriguing characters in the DC universe and has the potential to be a strong franchise but this comes across as a wasted opportunity.

The other characters are hardly in this movie and most of the time its just harley which would be fine but this movie is called birds of prey so... what happened. I would put the score much lower however there are good things in this movie like the action which is fun and colorful and the jokes can be good but most of the time they are kind of dumb. The final thing I should bring up is the villan Roman Sionis which is an interesting case since he gets lots of screen time. I do like him the acting was great for him but he has no motevation outside of money which is so stupid because he is the riches guy in gotham so why more money. However there is another issue with the movie and the villan that being the face peeling scene, this scene come out of no where and is super disturbing and I want it to get off my mind since its just there for shock value. I know I said this movie was bad but the action and acting make this movie worth. My review is long like the title of this movie lmafo Expand

First off, the film doesn't feature enough of the title characters outside of the climax and the editing, unfortunately, reeks of Suicide Squad at many points and definitely should have been refined. At the very least, unlike the aforementioned film, this film has something resembling a real plot, although the plot is pedestrian at best. Finally, the film does not use its R-rating to its full potential outside of childish profanity-laced throughout, with very little of the humor landing. This film serves as an unfortunate step backward for the DCEU just as it felt like it found its footing. Expand

It was no Suicide Squad, so it has that going for it.

Otherwise it's just a middle of the road movie that generally avoids falling on its face as it admirably but lazily tries to work DC's character development muscles out of atrophy. The other three titular Birds tend to blend into the wallpaper of Harley's character arc, Zsasz is extremely un-Zsasz-like, and the story repeatedly tries too hard to pull off the same old beats, but I can't give it too much crap. Anytime DC makes a movie that achieves mere passability, I stop and take notice.

This was the comic book movie equivalent of iceberg lettuce with a few croutons of fun sprinkled on top.

It's strange how the Joker went from one-dimensional, one-liner, character for decades but got the full dramatic treatment in the past 10 years. It was an incredibly, well-depicted transformation for the character. But Harley Quinn, nothing but a classic one-liner air-head from beginning to end. A bad attempt at comical, and never remotely close to comic hero. And then there's the inconsistency: One moment she's a vulnerable weakling without a man's protection, being targeted by every one in the city and she cant' even fend for herself against a single foe in hand-to-hand combat. A few scenes later she's armed, punching, kicking, and taking on an entire uniformed legion. Expand

You can tell what they tried to do here, and it just didn't work.

Harley Quinn's not Deadpool. Why bother?

They tried to keep it simple. Unfortunately, it's so simple you can spot the ending from a mile away.

Is it fun? Eh, kinda. There are a lot of elaborate, visually interesting set-pieces, and not much tying them together. You watch Harley creatively take out nameless thugs who can't figure out how to point and shoot. I watched this movie in halves because I was falling asleep in the middle.

I think the main problem is the characters. This version of Harley Quinn does not make for much of a main character. It doesn't help that the side characters are never really fleshed out. One lingers in the background, unnamed for almost all of the movie. The main villain is a real bad guy, but why does anyone tolerate his twisted torture? We know why we should hate him, but why is he in charge?

TheBirds of Prey is the perfect definition of fun yet still mediocre. It has its own style and stays consistent with it for the most part except for some areas but unfortunately falls into the forgettable yet fun comic book movie. The performances from everyone besides Margot Robbie and Ewan McGregor were decent. There wasn’t anything special about their performances but they did the best with what they had. Margot Robbie is fun as Harley Quinn. She knows how to make the character work and she is easily the best part of the film. Ewan McGregor is hilariously over the top. He always takes each role he has with as much energy as he possibly can and it was always entertaining to see him on screen. The worst part though is that Margot Robbie is the only character who is developed. Everyone else is just there. They have little to no characterization which reduces their impact to the events of the film. Ewan McGregor’s character is evil just to be evil. We don’t get a lot of information about why he is evil, he just is. Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s character has the second most amount of backstory but it feels forced plus I didn’t really care that much about any of the supporting characters. An ongoing problem I have been noticing with the films I have seen this year is their respective scripts. Out of the three films I have seen, this has the “best” script but it was still pretty weak. Some of the lines of dialogue are very forced and the jokes are inserted in the same forced way. I felt only a small handful of jokes, such as the Harley voted for Bernie joke, were funny while all the others felt forced or just weren’t that funny to me. The film’s visuals were engaging and interesting. The presentation of the film never felt bland to me. It was always colorful and appeasing. The action is mostly well done. The police station action sequence is pretty awesome but it gets interrupted halfway through by narration which goes into another flashback sequence for about 20-30 minutes. That annoyed me because I was enjoying this badass action sequence and it got interrupted. The film does this at certain points and it can get confusing but I eventually got used to it. Overall, Birds of Prey is a dumb fun comic book movie with fun action and good performances from Ewan McGregor and Margot Robbie but the script and limited to no characterization take away from the experience. They made basically every man misogynistic and stupid, and they just HAD to have a scene of a dude trying to seduce a girl nonconsensually, and then another girl comes to save the day and beats the guy up. LMAO! Incredibly cliche. Movies like these are always bad. You don't need to put down another gender using feminism to make a good movie. You can easily make a good movie whilst having feminism. Why do you think Wonder Woman did so well? Because it wasn't all in your face "girl power". It was, this is a powerful human, who happens to be a woman, who knows she's powerful and kicks ass, as a superhero does. She didn't need to prove it at all because we already knew. I loved Harley, she was almost perfect, but the other characters were the ones that were really trying to 'prove' their power unintentionally, it seemed. And they ruined Black Mask. I ended up walking out at the scene when Black Mask and his crew tries to ambush all the women. Such a disappointment. Expand

The film links in with 1 film, suicide squad, you don't have to have watched suicide squad to understand this film since harley explains everything in the first 5 minutes and subsequently everything in the film every 15 minutes or so. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Literally just a bog standard action movie with characters slightly reminiscent of those in DC's universes. A few of the jokes landed but they were overshadowed by the forced wackiness. The film isn't about the "Birds of Prey" but about Harley Quinn. False advertising that seems designed to bank on the good will of the comics to drag loyal fans in to a movie they don't want to see. I enjoyed it more than suicide squad but wish it just admitted to being a colourful action movie and didn't pretend to be something it isn't. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Acting: Everyone does a great job bringing their characters to life and doing the best possible with a very meh script. Particular standout for me was Huntress, as she gets only about 5 minutes of screen-time in total, but every second was solid gold and made me forget about the flaws of the movie.

Action: Mostly good. Great in the first half, noticeable dip in quality for the final few scenes.

Music/Sound: Great

Story: Mediocre. The most interesting characters get the least amount of screen-time (possible that they're the most interesting BECAUSE we're not hit over the head over and over with their story). Very ham-fisted storytelling. There is no subtlety in this movie. None. If there's a plot point, you'll see it again at least once (and probably thrice).

In the entire movie there is a total of one male character who is not a villain. There's an entire fight scene with a bunch of people trying to kill Harley for no reason at all (not to be confused with all of those who are doing so for a reason, or those who are doing so for a bad reason, or those that don't care about Harley but she's in the way). It's possible there is a background character seen crossing the street who isn't a villain, but even then, I'm pretty sure he was jaywalking.

A couple friends saw the movie after I did, who absolutely loved everything about the movie. They agreed with my assessment of there being no men that weren't actively villainous, and they felt that was perfectly fine. The movie is perfectly meh, and deserving of 5-6; I'd normally round up, but because of their thoughts I'm rounding down instead.

Positive - The sense of humour, the choreography, the cast. We got to see Black Mask as we know on the big screen for the first time.

Negative - Everything else. You know that feeling when you're eating a biryani and accidentally a piece of clove comes in your mouth which ruins the whole thing? That's exactly what this film is. Just when everything is going very well something will ruin it. The climax scene where Harley kills Roman was so badly ruined by that grenade part. The final fight where Harley opens the wardrobe and finds there are no weapons was so nice, but that roller skate fight ruined it. The part where Black Mask asks a girl to stand on the table and dance, the part where the restaurant owner betrays Harley, and most importantly the fact that Cassandra ATE the diamond (I literally rolled my eyes on that one. How did she not die immediately?) were all so cringy. The costumes were also so bad. To make them less sexualised, they ended up making it perfect for someone with an abdomen kink. If it weren't for me being a DC fan, I'd have never even watched it in the first place.

Sadly, other characters tend to be uninteresting, cheesy, or unpleasant. There is nothing more to them than the job they were given, thus they are neither appealing nor entertaining to watch. Even Mary Elizabeth Winstead's skill isn't effectively utilised by the directors. Despite some impressive manoeuvres, the fighting sequences may be improved. The movie starts good, and the quality drops.
Harley Quinn is fine. Huntress is somewhat good. She is somewhat good, because her origins and motivations are similar to the comics. Every other was mediocre to boring. Rene Montoya is a weak version, a weak detective, at least the versions we (I) are most familiar. Black Canary "debt" did bother me. And the worst version is Cassandra Cain, the best Batgirl don't exist here. Black Mask is whatever, and Zsasz creep, but not that much.

You can skip this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been longing for Hollywood to make a good female-led action film to join "Aliens". I'm still waiting.

Harley Quinn may be the protagonist, but it's the antagonist that makes a movie and Roman Sionis, played by the usually reliable Ewan McGregor, falls far short of being any challenge whatsoever. He struts, prances and preens around the screen but does absolutely nothing to show he's a match for Harley; a troop of Cub Scouts could take him down. A more worthy antagonist would've been Joker.

In "Suicide Squad", she had Will Smith to help carry the load, but here, there's nothing to her other than some flashy fight moves, and while those held me for a little while, there was nothing else for me to hold my interest, so I got bored less than halfway through.

Don't waste your time with this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you're high on acid you might enjoy this movie since it has some wonderful visuals, but otherwise just avoid it, this is an awful film with few redeeming qualities. Margot Robbie puts in a decent performance as Harley Quinn, however I was confused if this was supposed to be about Harley Quinn or about the Birds of Prey, no matter what they were going for though, they failed. The film lacks solid direction and the narrative is just boring and at many times cliche. Unfortunately there is also a strong effort to push a far-left, woke and feminist social and political agenda in the film. This isn't done subtly and it is very on the nose. For example, every male character is portrayed as an idiot or an over the top misogynist. This will turn off a lot of audiences who just wanted to watch an entertaining film with a well written narrative and interesting characters without being lectured or preached to, which is exactly what this film is trying to do. You shouldn't have to tear down male characters in order to lift up female ones. An easy example is Sarah Connor from the first two Terminator films and Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise, who are two of of most iconic characters in film history, wonderfully written and individuals you can look up to. Rosie Perez's character Renee Montoya doesn't work and it is also laughable to see a 55 year old woman beating up men younger and twice her size. On that note though I laughed at the end when Montoya was briefly fighting Harley Quinn, throughout the film, Quinn easily dispatches with any man who gets in her way, yet in this fight she struggles to overcome a much older, 55 year old woman (just thought id mention it). Laughably, Montoya is portrayed to be the only competent cop on the force and the men once again, are depicted as morons or misogynists. Roman Sionis/Black Mask, portrayed by Ewan McGregor, is an awful villain and is not really intimidating at all, they do their best to show him doing "evil" things, but instead I was just laughing at him. Not only is the character nothing like how he is written in the comic books and other source material, but instead he comes across like a child throwing temper tantrums, coming across like a much worse version of Kylo Ren. I do love Ewan McGregor, I think he is a wonderful actor and in this he puts in a decent enough performance, working with what he's given, however, I'm not sure if he was miscast or perhaps it's the dialogue or the screenplay as a whole, but it just doesn't work.

It's sad to see how they butchered a lot of these well known characters, they are nothing like how they are written in the comics. The changes to them are bewilderingly stupid at times and the writer seems to know barely anything about them, showing little to no respect for the foundations of these characters laid out in the comic books. Perhaps she was drunk at 1am writing it and briefly read some summaries on the wiki and said "I totally got this", then proceeded to spew whatever she could onto the page before passing out blackout drunk. Just a guess.

That being said, I did enjoy the look of the film, the visuals were quite enjoyable, at times the action was great and I loved the music. I wish I had more positive things to say but I'm struggling to think of any. Apart from Robbie and McGregor, the acting was alright, but nothing special. However, Cassandra Cain was just a terrible character though, actress Ella Jay Basco was fine and well cast, but the problem was with the writing and not her, just to make that clear. I don't mind flashbacks, but they weren't always used very well and some were repeated later in the film when we didn't need to see them, we already got the point you don't have to keep showing it over and over again. The Screenplay is objectively bad as well, which is quite sad since I do believe the Screenplay is the heart of any movie.

Initially, when I heard this film was in production I was excited. I love the character of Harley Quinn and the DC universe is one of my favourites. Although Suicide Squad wasn't the greatest I still loved the portrayal of Harley Quinn and was curious to see how a standalone movie would go. But sadly I hated this film. No, it's not a 0/10 or a 10/10, that's just being silly. It's a below average film that had all the right tools and cast to make an enjoyable film, instead they wasted them. Many departments in the production did an amazing job and they should be proud of what they achieved, I truly mean that. Sadly though it is a forgettable film that you should just avoid. But if you're high one night and need to kill some time and have your brain switched off, maybe this is the film for you.

There is a lot more to go into but since I'm almost at the word limit ill end it here. Have a lovely day and take care :D

The storytelling is odd and the flashbacks are weirdly placed to the point where they take you out of the movie. This movie has too much exposition and then not enough which I congrats I guess. I don't think men are rating this film low because they are "man babies" I think they are rating it low because there are far better superhero and anti-hero movies out there to choose from. The fight scenes are fine at times and odd at others as if two different directors worked on this movie. This movie is fine if you shut your brain off and just watch and eat some popcorn. A should watch if it comes to Netflix but a skip if you are paying money for it. Go see 1917 instead or even Bad Boys if you want a pointless action movie they are much better. Expand

I am a Margot Robbie fan, and she is amazing as always in Birds of prey, just everything else felt off, the world they have built here feels uninteresting and the styles and costumes are just NOT appealing to me. I Really didn't like the clothes Harley was wearing, I don't think she should have do the whole sexy psycho thing, but at least a little femme fatale would be good. In this film she is dressed like a 5 year old or a cat lady or something. Part of Harley charm has always been the fact she is drop dead gorgeous and insanely intelligent. But at the same time she is straight up dangerous and even though every man wants her , most a to scared to even try. To that I answer which is better a heart attack or a stroke? The truth of the matter is, this movie is bad, really bad. I could go on how this is a massive missed opportunity for a Harley Quinn/Posion Ivy film or female lead superhero film but for this review I won't. Often with movies like this it's hard to begin to note the serious underlying issues within a film but in this case it's quite easy and that is the films screenplay.

This films screenplay has to be one of the worst scripts ever written for a movie. I honestly think that if you made a film about how this screenplay managed to get green-lit and filmed it using a potato you would instantly have an infinitely better film. The number of plot jumps, tonal shifts, lack of regard for continuity, awful dialogue, overuse of tropes and forgettable characters should be reason enough to burn the script and blacklist the writer (Who was also responsible for 2017's Unforgettable). What you ultimately have in this film is an inferior gender swapped DC version of Deadpool 2 mixed with elements of Suicide Squad. Anti-hero protagonist takes on juvenile criminal orphaned ward. Said ward is wanted by the films villain, anti-hero realizes they care for the kid, anti-hero assembles a team of unsung heroes to save kid, etc. Its borderline insulting to audience.

Next up we have characters. Each character in this film is presented with some form of backstory Huntress, an orphaned assassins who hunts down the men who killed her family; Montoya a middle aged detective overlooked by her male counterparts; Black Canary, a nightclub singer bound in service to Black Mask; Cassandra Cain, a criminal foster child with slight of hand; and Harley Quinn the ex paramour of the Joker. They are rivaled by C tier Batman villain's Black Mask, a woman hating mob boss; and Zsasz, a psychopathic killer who marks his kills on his body. All of these however are very valid backstories supported by decade long comic runs, however every single one of these characters have no ark at all and are completely one dimension and insulting to their source material such as Montoya and whatever constitutes as Victor Zsasz in this film. I had no enjoyment watching any of them and for as good as Margot Robbie is as Harley Quinn there is just too damn much Harley and it gets exhausting. Ewan McGregor who has really shined recently is just sad to watch as Black Mask, and I also feel for Mary Elizabeth Winstead who was just wasted.

The films direction is also questionable if you loved the tacky and hideous set and costume design of Suicide Squad you'll probably be okay with Birds of Prey. Once again the cast look like homeless people and the sets pumped with more than enough neon and dark colors. Fight sequences offer little that is new and feel crammed into the movie to wake up the audience. The stakes in this movie are low and I found I really didn't care about the plight of the heroes.

I definitely recommend not watching this movie. If you're after spectacular screenplay watch Parasite or Marriage Story or if you wish to see a great movie co-written by a woman watch 1917. But this is a definite missed opportunity.

There are two massive, inescapable elephants in the room though. A clear misandrist platform and like Wonder Woman and Aquaman (the two worst DC movies in recent memory) its trying WAY too hard to model these films after Disney. I am not going to go into the sexism rampant in the film because too many other reviewers will. However the Disney tropes are every bit as rampant from start to finish and ultimately what it causes is the film to be BORING. Each scene trying too hard to outdo the last scene till it just becomes a boring slog that will lull you to sleep with how "awesome" it thinks it is.

I REALLY wanted to like this. Despite being REALLY sexist given the setting of a BoP film I only deducted two points for that. What gutted the film 5 points is yet again this is another example of DC trying to hard to be like Disney and when you have DC degrading itself to be like the #EvilestCorporationOnEarth what is the point of watching what is like 70% the same you would get from the plague rat?

Warner Brothers is going to have to do something to right this ship and unfortunately, Robert Pattinson is NOT going to be the salvation either.

In 2016 DC tried to get their own Guardians of the Galaxy, but with bad guys (since they never stopped stressing it) And that idea didn't work for them.
Shortly after they released an extra cut of that same film giving more scenes to the character who stole the attention of the audiences: Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.
I assume that at some point some executive at Warner said: ''We should get her a film for herself and as a bonus we get our own Deadpool''.
I really think that's how they started this disaster.

For me Birds of Prey is the worst DC film so far, not only for how cheap it looks but for the simplicity of its execution and its devastating lack of imagination.
The interactions are laughable, there's no chemistry between the girls and the cherry on the top of this disaster cake is how they manage to waste one of Batman's best villains.

Let me make this clear and the title change in the US proves it: This is Margot Robbie's film and just her. She has really adopted the character and is the only real reason to see this film, but Robbie also makes clear that she needs better screenwriters and better directors to shine. We'll see if James Gunn manages to do her justice.

And just to put it out there I must comment this film demonstrates again the lack of a plan behind this shared universe because unless their plan is to go down this way, at the end of it all, Birds of Prey brings absolutely nothing for the future of this franchise.
Especially considering that what's behind it are Aquaman and Shazam and what comes next is Wonder Woman 1984 and just right after that one; The Batman, which is supposed to be an epic film for DC and Warner, so you kinda wonder what the hell they were doing here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film breaks my heart as a DC comic book fan of the original and iconic Birds of Prey by Chuck Dixon. This is far removed far removed from the classic version that never should've been used in the first place. The characters, Huntress, Canary and most infuriating Cassandra Cain were do not resemble their comic book counterparts both in appearance and in character. The idea of this film being called birds of prey without even Barbara Gordon(Oracle) is a crime. They should've just called this film Harley Quinn or the Gotham City Sirens (with Poison Ivy) becasue 90 percent of the film wasn't about the team.
All aside, the casting is decent(Margot Robbie can do no wrong as Harley Quinn), the usage of colour The use of colourswere great and I found some moments of entertainment through some of its action sequences hat mostly make no sense. However this film fails on lack of characterization, decent story, generic to boring and laughable villain(played greatly by Ewan Mcgregor),heesy acting from most of the cast, the apparent sexisim tone in this film and lack of motivation for the characters except fight the patriarchy. This was a laughable film that tries too hard to be like Deadpool. DC should start reading comics from the golden age and take notes before lazily take titles of beloved franchises and make unnecessary changes from the classic comics. All aside, the casting is decent(Margot Robbie can do no wrong as Harley Quinn), and some fun action scenes that mostly make no sense. However this film fails on lack of characterization, decent story, generic to boring and laughable villain(played by Obi Wan) and lack of motivation for the characters except fight the patriarchy. All of the characters have little connect to their comicbook counter parts. Black Canary was betrayed as a character and Huntress could have been cut and nothing would have changed. Zasz wasn't himself in the least, Blackmask was discount Joker. The score was annoying to say the least and the visuals were vomit inducing. Editing was always a tad off and the story was a cluster of a mess. Listening to HQ's voice for nearly 2 hours was painful to say the least. Comedy was hit or miss and the action was pretty engaging for the most part, except for the ending. Every man in this film was a jerk, a simp, or a coward and color me not impressed because of that. This is exceptionally poor quality for 100 years of film. It feels like Margot Robbie took the character a bit too far from who she is. If you're a fan of Harley in the comics(though she was created on Batman Animated Series) and like her in Suicide Squad - don't watch this. I can deal with feminism, (even the heavy stuff) after all it was men who created this character and men who appreciate her just like Wonder Woman. The problem lies in what seems to be Margot Robbie's ,"vision," for a female archtype anti-hero. This is just not the character to do it with. As we all know, Harley doesn't set out to be the ,"bad girl taking on bad guys." She becomes an excellent hero without the help of Suicide Squad, or reflection on the Joker. A true hero, and dare I say one of the greatest of all time. This film makes it about Harley having more than a series of moments where as an ordinary woman she was abused, rejected, and oppressed just because. It makes no sense, and the flashbacks should have been cut completely. The female heroes of this film are displayed counter to their origin and their comic literature. This is nothing more than a Novella or a Lifetime movie. I expect much better from Margot Robbie given her stellar performances so far and I respect her acting chops. The production in this film is so low bar, it feels like a high school musical with dirty closeups and unusual sexual exploitation followed up as ,"I shot you," and ,"no I shot you first," by children with a kung fu fetish. As a man, I generally enjoy a fantasy utilizing my favorite female leads with wild female characters. This gave me uncomfortable feelings for how Margot Robbie picks and chooses when to be sexy or when to project feminine superiority. Given a society with multiple genders being recognized, where was the inclusivity as well? There's some gay representation but no trans, queer, or queer racial. From a right wing standpoint, this movie is offensive. From a left wing standpoint, this movie is difficult to watch, boring, misogynistic and exploitative given the #metoo and makes no attempt to rectify those shortcomings. If I was a woman and watched this, I would be offended. This is not just cringe despite what others have said. I've seen far worse. But this is a terrible way to turn the lights off. What is this film about? Broken white girl rescue operation? I even liked Suicide Squad and was excited to see a Harley film. This is not what I was hoping for from such a beloved example of perseverance. A beloved character that men celebrate just as much as Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman has only recently become a feminist(for some as most women disagree with her character) project and has always been coveted by men as a true hero. To see yet another DC character just misused and given away to an actor without oversight is a pity. I feel the cast leaned too hard on the idea of being badass chicks instead of badass heroes with a soul and a purpose. Redemption. This is just an awful film. Truly awful. Expand

Birds of Prey is a Harley Quinn movie whose every attribute is just as sloppily scrambled as the mind of Harley Quinn.
Along the same Harley-esque lines, despite all odds this film accidentally succeeds in some small ways. This script is a mess of time jumps and irritating/unreliable narration from one Harley Quinn. It fails to invest you in Harley or any of its characters before throwing them into action set piece after action set piece, as is the typical failing of nearly any bad comic book movie. Sometimes, the pacing of such films partially save them from this lack of attachment. Unfortunately Harley Quinns's pacing is grinded to a halt and even rewinded once or twice by its time jumps. The film attempts to excuse this nonsensical mess it makes as a result of scatter-brained Harley narrating the story. Although tying the structure of a film to an unreliable narrator's mental instability is a concept I like in theory (and have liked in films like Memento and Synechdoche, New York), the characters in Birds of Prey lack the substance to pull it off. Quick-fire complaints time. The action was creative but marred by slowmo and fastmo. A pop-filled soundtrack cannot replace the identity a composed score brings to a film. Ewan McGregor's hilarious performance was marred by a needless pervy, Joffrey wannabe scene. The costume designer spent so much time making Harley's costumes flawless that every other character's costumes suffered. Birds of Prey shows a lot of promise for what could have been. It is definitely a step up from Suicide Squad, but not a big one. It's doing well in the box office so we may get another one. Hopefully the next iteration has better direction. Costuming is not something I usually mention in my reviews. This film warrants it. The costume designers seem to have spent so much time focusing on Harley that they nearly forgot about every other character. Why was Huntress wearing a wonky chain across her body? I can tell you it's not from the comics. Why was Detective Montoya wearing a t-shirt that said "I shaved my balls for this" for half the film? For one lame joke from the captain? Why does Black Mask's mask look so cheap? There are character excuses for all of these things. Huntress is trying to be an edgelord. Montoya is a drunk. Black Mask is a super-villain wannabe. These excuses unfortunately don't make these costumes look any less bad.

It is riddled with inconsistancies like magicaly appearing props and dissapearing characters/conflicts. Worse, it commits a cardinal sin by making its characters, who inhabit a fictional universe, mouthpieces for modern real world agendas. It makes the characters into jarringly inconsistent crazy quilts - not in a good-crazy (joker) way but in a really poorly crafted (suicide squad) way. It forces Harley through a spaghetti press; shes a mass murdering psychopath but also a role model of the feminine independant from men. So she can kiIl some people with impunity but cant cross certain lines. She completely spares a police station by using non lethal force but switches back to bone breaking and murder on bikers. This could be cool if the charactrer was outlined and reinforced by this behavior but no good reason for it is given- which clarifies that the choices are being made for reasons outside the storyline and universe (for us, the viewers). Its not subtle. It even literally says the name of a real world politician she voted for. Harley Quinn (a mass murderer who abducts girls) votes for Bernie. Solid endorsement. You morons. To be clear: a good movie could be written about this character. . . This is just not it. Heres some better themes: stockholm syndrom, domestic violence, co dependency issues, Girl Boss Issues, dealing with physical inferiority, and the consumate fear in a super hero world - and evening the odds... All good feminist issues, all related to the character and consistent with the universe. . Expand
