This film is so much fun, and takes Harley Quinn and gives her the movie she deserves. It has some moments that are cringe worthy but overall enjoyable

Black Mask is a great villain and McGregor does a great job, so is Zsasz, he is really scary. The action in this movie is so fluid and well choreographed and the story is so much fun. I just don’t really like when a movie keeps shifting between present and past and in the beginning of the movie this happened, i got used to it, i just didn’t liked it. The soundtrack is amazing, all of the fabulous original songs are great. Yeah this is one of the best superheroes movie and among the best Dc movies Expand

The superhero movies of the year 2020 kicks off with the eighth instalment of DC Extended Universe, which features the return of Harley Quinn, who was last seen in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and the official debut of Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain in the big screen.

Taking place after the events of Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn (Robbie) officially declare her break up with the Joker publicly by destroying Ace Chemical factory using an oil tanker and throw away the necklace given to her from him. Her reckless actions have caused an open season on her head by many criminals in Gotham City who wants revenge on her now that they don’t have to fear retaliation from Joker himself.

Meanwhile, Roman Sionis/Black Mask (McGregor) sends Victor Zsasz and Dinah Lance/Black Canary to retrieve a valuable diamond which originally belong to a now extinct Mafia crime family. They successfully got the diamond without problem until a young street thief named Cassandra Cain (Basco) stole the diamond from Zsasz but she got arrested by the police soon after when she is caught for stealing other items.

Not happy with the diamond being stolen and the young thief now in police custody, Black Mask captures Harley and force her to retrieve the diamond from Cassandra in exchange for immunity from criminals wanting revenge on her. Black Canary secretly inform Detective Renee Montoya, who have been chasing after Black Mask for months. A mysterious assassin named Helena Bertinelli/Huntress, who have been killing criminals that is responsible for her family massacre, joins the party and everyone will soon cross paths with each other.

When this movie was first announced, I was expecting the movie will end up being bad just like Suicide Squad. However, I am happy to report that Birds of Prey is not bad and quite good. The movie is just like a combination of Deadpool and John Wick movies. Full of fun, violence and dark humours. The story is very much simple to follow and not too complicated. Christina Hodson have done a great job with her writing in this movie much like how she has done with 2018’s Bumblebee. Cathy Yan have proved herself to be a good director and yet this is her second feature film in her career. Not bad for her. She has done an outstanding job.

The performance from the casts are simply amazing. Margot Robbie and Ewan McGregor played their roles very well. Margot is still great as Harley just like she has portrayed her character in her last appearance and still never lost her touch. As for Ewan McGregor, he really done a great job in playing a ruthless and menacing villain. Aside from them, Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, whom they played Black Canary and Huntress respectively have done a great job too, especially the latter who manage to steal the show when she has the least amount of screen time compared to the others. As for Rosie Perez and Ella Jay Basco, they done good job in their performance but for Ella, her character bears no resemblance to her comic book counterpart which hurts the movie a little. Hopefully in the next movie, she will have a better character development into her comic book counterpart.

The fighting scenes in this movie are very well shot by Chad Stahelski, who is well known as the director of John Wick movies. Using his experience from those movies, he has made the fighting scenes looked awesome and violent just like what was seen in John Wick movies. While the movie is great, there are some flaws. I felt the movie is a little too short on the runtime and should have been longer since this is a team movie. Despite being a team movie, the characters did not spend much time on screen together until the final act.

Although the story is simple to follow, there are not many surprises in the movie as there are no cameos from Joker and even Batman. Not even a plot twist which I personally think it’s better not to have one because it may ruin the narrative of the story in a bad way. Even with all these flaws at the end of the day, Birds of Prey is so much better team movie than Suicide Squad and even 2017’s Justice League. That said, I look forward to see Harley again in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in 2021. With DC Extended Universe now having four good movies including this one, I hope to see the franchise keep moving forward. There is no post credits scene but there is a post-credits audio sequence from Harley Quinn. Next stop: Wonder Woman 1984.

I love the narrative and how everything is connected. WB can give Margot Robbie as many movie she wants, she deserve it, that woman got range. Montoya is a real badass. Give us some more Canary right now please. I would have liked to see more of Huntress but it will be for next time. Cain is good and I hope we'll see her as Orphan in the future, she can totally do it.

Sionis and Zsaz are great together but they could have been better, they had a huge potential. I don't think they're the best villain but they bring something new and that's the spirit. When the genre is starting to be repetitive, it's good to have movies like that.

The action sequences are stunning, it's beautiful, colorful, aesthetic and well choreographed.

S/o to my guy George Harkness for the cameo. I can't wait to see Harley in TSS now.

Plus I had the chance to see it in IMAX, so happiest boi on Earth

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came into the movie having low expectations. I didn't like Suicide Squad and I feel like most of the DCU movies are meh at best(w/ a couple exceptions) but I left the theater pleasantly surprised! I wouldn't say that this is the best DC movie I've seen but honestly, it was a lot of good fun. I found myself laughing at alot of the funny parts- a few jokes fell flat but most were good, the action had me at the edge of my seat or cringing. I'm not a fan of seeing bones break so that made me a little uncomfortable but honestly, it wasn't a bad thing. Pros- The story was just a fun rollercoaster ride with a good amount of action, good amount of laughs, a few heart felt moments, and Margo's Harley impression was really good. Like it made me think of the 90's Batman TAS Harley Quinn voice. it was a little off but I loved hearing her do it either way!

There was alot of subtle nods to the comic books that I loved. Also I saw this with a friend that isn't a huge comic book fan but they totally got it. They never felt lost or felt like they had to ask me questions in order to be filled in on what's what or whose who. Alot of nerds will rage about this but ppl need to remember that this movie was made for the masses & the fact that the general audience can watch this w/o feeling lost is a GOOD THING.

There were a couple issues that i had with the movie but honestly, they were minor. Character development felt a little short bc the cast was a decent size but it felt like by the end of the movie, I didn't know much about the background of a few of the main characters. I knew about their comic book counter parts and I know that the movie can't spent hours developing the characters but the underdevelopment made me care lil less about them? Killing off the bad guy- This is an issue that I have w/ every super hero movie (http://nrdy.co/marvel-dc-comics-villains/). They kill off the bad guys so there's no chance of them coming back unlike comic books where the fact that they keep coming back is what keeps the stories going. I didn't mind Zsasz dying b/c i kinda forget he's a thing at times but Black Mask seems like a bigger villain to just kill off.

Over all I dont understand the hate boner ppl have for this movie. This is definitely a better movie than most of the DCU movies, it was fun, exciting, funny, and truly enjoyable. Is it the best DCU movie? Naw (WW has that tbh) but is it a good DCU movie? Yes! Would i recommend my friends to watch it? Yes

The movie is a lot of fun and nails the spirit of the Harley Quinn comics from 52 and Rebirth. A mix of Deadpool and Charlie’s Angel’s is the best way I could describe it.

Margot Robbie is brilliant and so is the rest of the cast. Ewen McGregor has a blast playing Black Mask as this violent man child with daddy issues unable to deal with not getting his way. The actual Birds Of Prey don’t ever take center stage at all in this as the whole thing is pretty much a Harley Quinn movie.

It is a little choppy in places though pacing wise and they kind of hammer home the girl power themes with every single male character (even the minor ones) treating women like dirt. But it doesn’t appear to be a conscious choice, nor does it feel like a lecture. Plus, every female character (even the minor ones) are hardly perfect either. They all mess crap up, have issues and are morally ambiguous at best. This is Gotham City after all

NERDS MOVIE REVIEW - BIRDS OF PREY(and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) *SPOILER FREE*

As a huge fan of the DCEU, this movie made me giddy as a school girl who just found her Favorite flavor lip gloss!

Margot Robbie and her co-stars turn up the heat in this extremely visceral action/comedy depiction of the comicbook characters; Harley Quinn, Huntress, Black Canary, detective Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain as they battle to survive the onslaught of attacks by the felonious Roman Sionis. This movie is on par with DC rival, Marvel's DEADPOOL movies in breaking the fourth wall.

The movie jumps around just like the fractured segments of Harley's sanity with the puzzle pieces of this story eventually coming together as a whole by its final scene.

This movie is not as bloody as a Tarantino movie, but the graphic and violent fight scenes will make you cringe with delight as you internalize the pain those characters feel at the hands of Harley and her "team!”

Overall, this movie should break major fandom records as it has definitely secured a solid footing for the DCEU in being able to compete in the superhero genre!

We cant WAIT to see what WONDERWOMAN 1984 brings... Stand alone movies seem to finally be the ice breaker by the DCEU; with the comical antics of SHAZAM, The steroidal jolt given to the AQUAMAN legend and now the insane comical antics HARLEY QUINN, DCEU is on the rise!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Birds of Prey is a decent DCEU movie and earns redemption for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn after the mess that was Suicide Squad. The writing, directing and story give Quinn much more depth, make her a more interesting character, and allow us to get to know her much more than we were able to in Suicide Squad. BoP does a nice job of emphasizing Quinn’s anarchic and wild spirit and personality without having her be overshadowed by other characters, which really gives her room to shine and show us who Quinn truly is. The fight sequences are pretty good and entertaining, although they don’t quite live up to ones that we saw in Aquaman. This movie serves as a palate cleanser for both Quinn and viewers. Quinn is forced to fend for herself as a result of her actions early in the film and is put in difficult situations, so this isn’t a great palate cleanser for her, but her life is changed in big ways and we see her go through a bit of an arc. For viewers, this is a DCEU film where stakes and ramifications are pretty low since this is a movie about a character who has liberated herself and is on the run because of that, which is a nice breath of fresh air from movies with much higher stakes like Aquaman. We can sit through this movie knowing that there won’t be a fight that destroys a city or some kind of alien invasion, a luxury we don’t have with so many other comic book films. All of this makes BoP a better movie than a lot of its predecessors and more easy and fun to watch. That said, BoP isn’t a perfect movie by any means. The dialogue and interactions between characters goes a bit over the top on many occasions when Quinn gets a bit too wild and anarchic and some of the lines are cheesy and unnecessary. There are relatively minor things that get way too much attention which distracts from the bigger picture of the movie and gives the script a bit of wild and anarchic vibe of its own, which doesn’t work at a few points in the movie. BoP is a movie that you kinda have to push through at moments so you can get to the good stuff, but when you get there, it really gets going and delivers the entertainment that fans watch comic book movies for. Overall, BoP has its flaws but is a huge step in the right direction for Harley Quinn and is a solid entry in the DCEU. Expand

What's more relieving is that the central character reprises her role after Suicide Squad and whose shoulders the movie rests on mainly. The narrative starts from her central piece to introduce four other new characters in which the Huntress turns out to stand out among the rest with Black Canary laying out the surprise element. The fight choreography is top notch and the stunts well executed owing to the mastermind behind the action sequences of John Wick series. All this helps the movie to hit the lid on cylinders considering the fact that it has subtle references to the movies before it in the same universe, Sucide Squad being the highlight. Expand

Though a superior sequel to Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey at times tries too hard to be funny and innovative. The actual team only gets together in the last twenty minutes of the film, which leaves for a lot of build up with not a lot of payoff.

Pretty much Deadpool 2 mixed with Snatch, except not nearly as good or funny. Still, it's a fun movie for Harley Quinn and tells a good story towards the end at the expense of characters.

What turns out to be a surprise is the stunt choreography led by John Wick's Chad Stahelski and the colorful cinematography. And everything else except a cheap one-dimensional villain is just icing on the cake. DCEU finally has a good R-Rated film and it didn't disappoint. Is it bad and feminist as Captain Marvel? Nope, but it's certainly a bloody good time seeing these women kicking ass in this gritty Tarantino-like DC flick. At least I didn't drink bleach after seeing it. Expand

They picked a great time to release it due to the fact the Harley Quinn is really hot right now. They are pushing her and people are taking a liking to this new anti-hero. I will say first and foremost if you don't like Harley Quinn SKIP THIS MOVIE. I shouldn't have to say that but people love to see something they know they have a bias against just to hate on it. Birds of Prey is a fun movie that is bug nuts crazy, but super enjoyable. I had a good time while watching it. A lot of the jokes miss yet the ones that hit are genuinely funny. For me it was Black Mask played by Ewan Mcgregor who steals the show. He knows he is in a comic book movie and just makes the film his own. Seriously ever second he is on screen playing his psycho mob boss made me want a Goodfellas style movie with him in it. The movie is rated R which helps it a lot. There is cussing and enough violence to make you pleased with it being basically about a villain. I enjoyed this film and would recommend it for a fun rental to drinks a couple of beers with and enjoy some popcorn just for a good time. Expand

How was it? It was good! However, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the other recent DC movies. It’s not as campy or creative as Aquaman, it’s not as funny or heartfelt as Shazam! and it’s not as mature or gritty as Joker. It has all of those elements, but I didn’t think they were as strong. I enjoyed it about as much as Wonder Woman. It’s quite good, but I think it could’ve been better. I wasn’t really into the story structure of the film. It was really weird, the first half of the movie or so is told in a nonlinear way with Harley Quinn narrating over everything. It jumped around a little too much for my liking. I also think the narration is overused, it got a little old after a while. There were also some weird editing choices, but it wasn’t NEARLY as bad as Suicide Squad! There were also too many characters, it’s both a Harley Quinn solo movie and a Birds of Prey origin story. I’m not really sure why they did that. Just Harley would’ve been enough to carry the film, the other characters weren’t as interesting and the movie kinda drags whenever it focuses on them. If it were up to me, I would’ve retooled the story a bit to include Catwoman and Poison Ivy instead of the Birds of Prey and make it a Gotham City Sirens movie. Though, again, the ensemble cast of the movie is handled way better than Suicide Squad. Finally, this movie did not need to be an R. There’s just some violence that could easily be toned down and some swearing that could easily be cut. It feels like a movie that would appeal most to teenagers, but (in the States at least) they can’t see it. It’s not like Joker, which really earned the R-rating with its subject matter. I don’t feel like Birds of Prey really did. This movie would reach a wider audience if it were rated PG-13. Also, I don’t like the title. It’s too long and doesn’t sound good or interesting to a casual audience member. However, with all that said, this movie is a lot of fun. It’s very colourful and good-looking and it takes place in a very cool version of Gotham City. You actually get to see people being nice to each other on a beautiful sunny day, as well as the darkness and violence that you would expect from a Batman movie. This movie has some laughs, is well-acted and the action is well-done. When the real story actually gets going, it’s engaging and entertaining. Harley Quinn is a great lead character and the movie has a good soundtrack. The villains are also very enjoyable! Oh yeah, and I LOVED the opening with the hand-drawn animation! Also, even though this is a sequel to Suicide Squad, it does stand on its own and no Jared Leto Joker is to be found! The Joker is in this movie, but they use the comic/animated series design. That was funny. I also think it’s funny to imagine this movie as a sequel to Joker. Just a fun thought experiment. Overall, I do think the movie is holding itself back. I was expecting something more along the lines of Scott Pilgrim or Baby Driver, something with really creative and over-the-top action with great characters and comedy. However, I can’t fault the movie for what it isn’t and, for what it is, this is a good movie. I recommend giving it a watch, especially if you’re a Harley Quinn fan. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never went into this movie thinking it was going to be good. I was surprised. It's actually somewhat hard to remember at this point what my expectations were of this film. It was a sequel of sorts to a pretty disheartening antihero film from the DC Universe, one that's been done better by the likes of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker. Suicide Squad was supposed to be what Venom was supposed to be, these edgy rated R movies that took off the kid gloves and let us root for the baddies a little, built a team of villains up for us over the course of a few movies so that they could interact with our heroes in more interesting ways with a longer emotional runway. Instead, Suicide Squad was hard to watch and generally soulless aside from the excellent character work of Margot Robbie. It was right and proper that she should receive a spin off of her own, and Gail Simone's work along with Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti's zany take on Harley and Chad Hardlin's whimsical art style have made for some excellent source material to draw from. Birds of Prey is an above average break up movie and an excellent superhero story that really did find a way to maintain its feminist credentials without having to sacrifice fan service in many respects. It found a way to cannily navigate its way between the expectations of a young male audience who came to see a group of misfit criminals with a lot of sex appeal and the core of fans who've been waiting to see an all-women line-up from literally any production house since forever. Robbie's Harley is the ditzy femme fatale of Suicide Squad, but her look and her outlook are updated. She spends less time licking the ends of bats and doing contortions in a stripper cage and a lot more time exacting vengeance on gross people like the owner of the exotic petshop who demands "payment in kind" or befriending hapless pickpockets out of jail. Her arc is believable because the movie gives her time to grieve for the death of her abusive relationship, the cartoon portrait of Mr. J in her apartment that she throws knives at (who, significantly, her younger ward does not even recognize) or the party where she meets a cute mannequin, a cute guy who ends up being a creep, and a future guardian angel. Friend says one of the wise things the director did was not try to make her sympathetic for too much of the movie: yes, she's cutesy, but HQ sells out the pickpocket when things get hard, she's too drunk to fight off her captors after a night out at the bar, she bowls over an innocent store clerk for very little reason with her shopping cart. She's a pretty big jerk, which makes her decision to defend the pickpocket toward the end all the more meaningful, because it almost-but-not-quite feels like a turning point....

Narratively, the movie is one tightly wound skein. It doesn't quite make it to "multiple temporalities" (think Dunkirk or Inception), as one Friend said he was being led to believe, but it does jump around in some odd ways, laterally to other characters just outside of the frame, rather than to conventional flashbacks. The effect is one in which the story feels like its filling up with more and more information and stakes the longer we go. It's an unnecessary structural alteration, but welcome, like lace. The lack of linear storytelling is one of my favorite things about experiencing this movie for the first time. Doc's character is the one truly evil character in the whole movie and he never gets his comeuppance. It's so distracting that it's still a little unnerving right now to talk about. There is only one scene that is clearly **** insane makes no sense how did this make it in and it's toward the tail end of Harley and her runaway hiding out at her apartment. There's a knock on the door from the stairs staying "Open Up, It's the Police," so the two of them run to the window to escape, only to find a thug launching a fireball of fireworks into her apartment through the window. At which point her hyena goes missing instantly (to be found later completely safe though its set up as a kind of winter sequence in the same vein as the massacred sandwich). Then they... go down the stairs they just were avoiding because of the police (remember?) only there's no one there. There's no one in the shop at all. And no one waiting for Harley anymore, in fact, except Doc is packing his things because he's just been bribed (either by Huntress or the crime syndicate that Obi Won controls) to leave town after tipping them off to her home address. He leaves and then she's on the run. How was he paid? Why does she let him leave without further confrontation? Don't they have a history together?

Also, while we're on the topic of shared history, why don't Black Canary and the pickpocket have more conversations about how they're NEIGHBORS? Those issues are not enough to detract from how fun this movie is. I cannot recommend seeing BoP highly enough.

A wild and violent adventure for characters who are all on their own mission until they eventually cross paths in the urban streets of Gotham City. The pacing tends to slow down a bit and the comedy can be very hit or miss but once the titular team finally connects, it's some of the best choreographed fighting in a long time. Meet the Birds of Prey as introduced by the fantabulous Harley Quinn. Yes, that irrepressible, wild card and former paramour of the Joker is emancipated from the Suicide Squad and shepherding us through the origin story of that lady gang, featuring Renee Montoya, Black Canary and The Huntress. Margot Robbie reprises effervescent and sly portrayal of Harley. Here, she dominates. I don’t know what Birds of Prey would be without her.

Like most origin stories, Birds of Prey starts each character off in their own contained silo until they all come together in order to service the plot. As comic book movies go, this plot is not important. A bad guy wants a thing that will give him money to dominate the city. The “good” guys, or in this case the better girls, want to stop him because he’s a jerk trying to harm an innocent kid. Yada yada yada! Crash, bang, boom! The movie ends. Let’s be honest, you’re not going to see this movie because you want to be surprised by what happens.

Cathy Yan’s direction of the film can barely contain all of the energy Robbie brings to Harley Quinn, which makes the titular, Birds of Prey, take a bit of a backseat, and the screenplay by Christina Hodson is a little all over the place. I actually wish it had been funnier. There are funny quips here and there, but overall I wasn’t LOLing as much as I had hoped. There’s so much going on throughout the film. There are cartoon vignettes, explosions, and a lot of kicking butt. Also, Ewan McGregor, playing Roman Sionis, this movie’s mustache-twisting villain, and Chris Messina, the sinister henchman, are so outsized in their performances that they make more of an impact that the Birds of Prey as well – although McGregor, in particular, should have been reined in a bit. In fact, I wish there had been more to The Huntress. She just recedes in the background while both Renee Montoya, played by Rosie Perez, and Black Canary, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, get good moments and hold their own against the otherwise dominating Harley Quinn.

Nevertheless, there is a lot to like aside from just Margot Robbie. The film’s runtime is manageable and not bloated like some other comic book movies – I’m looking at you, Marvel Universe. In general, the movie moves at a good clip, not really wasting time. The fight scenes have a lot of pizzazz to them, which is interesting considering how dark films set in Gotham can be. Also, there are some really good and interesting music choices sprinkled throughout.

Birds of Prey is worth the price of a ticket in the theater. It was a fun night at the cinema. Sure, the plot isn’t important but you’re really just there to see Harley Quinn wreak havoc. And, havoc she wreaks!

I think we completely agree on this one. DC Comics has provided one of their more entertaining films with Birds of Prey. When the dust clears, DC has provided the theaters their female Deadpool-like protagonist. I do wish the movie were a bit funnier and the villain a bit more essential to the story but I’ll suffice with great fight scenes instead. This movie definitely is a good watch on the big screen but save yourself a few bucks with a matinee showing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

It is so **** fun. The r-rated antics of the birds are fun, all the actors are having the time of their lives, the action is completely nonsensical, but god, is it entertaining. Ewan McGregor completely steals the show in what might be his best performance, completely devouring the scenery with his insane expressions and bizarre dialogue. As a fan of the comics it's also fun seeing Zsasz as Black Mask's sidekick. Margo Robbie reprises her role as the only good thing about suicide squad, and Montoya was a surprisingly likeable addition to the team. The effects were great, the plot was stupid, and the soundtrack was inspired. The sequence were Harley imagines her current situation as a music video was pretty hilarious as well. A great, dumb, and **** ridiculous movie. I haven't been this entertained in a cinema for years. It begins after she's been dumped by The Joker. She goes on a carefree kick-ass spree that includes tracking down a special diamond and the girl who has it. Robbie stays over the top with big aplomb and fun fight choreography. Ewan McGregor plays the villain, but never makes much of the potential to match her over-the-top characterization. There's plenty of happy and mean-spirited fun in this lively movie, even though the assemblage of the "Birds" doesn't happen til the final scenes. Not a special addition to the DC anthology, but enjoyable enough. Expand

While this has led to some amusing results and is responsible for much of the character's ever-growing popularity, she has yet to match her obvious inspiration in terms of cleverness and originality. Nowhere has that been more evident than in this movie.

While I'm happy to see to see another studio follow in Fox's footsteps by making a R-rated superhero flick in this post-MCU market, the more mature and graphic content this allows for never feels as good a fit for Joker's ex as it did for Wolverine and the merc with a mouth. So all the F-bombs, gore, and raunchy humor end up coming off as sad attempts to be edgy more often than not.

One of the more divisive aspects of 2016's Suicide Squad was it's Hot Topic visual aesthetic. It returns here and might actually be worse this time around. I really hope Warner Bros. ditches it going forward because I'm tired of the way it makes classic characters like Black Canary look ratchet. As much as I loved Jurnee Smollett-Bell in the role and want to see her return to it in a Green Arrow movie or something, her wardrobe was a consistent problem for me. With a few exceptions, the heroes and villains that have been unfortunate enough to find themselves in this corner of the DCEU have been subject to bad designs.

Birds of Prey also lags behind other superhero films in the action department. It's hard to take Quinn herself seriously when her foes are clearly just standing there and letting her beat the crap out of them. Even when there are people onscreen who can believably carry a fight scene the choreography is usually sloppy. I wasn't expecting John Wick or anything, but this is well below the standards set by its peers.

The story was the saving grace for me. There's no potential world ending threat here. It's just another messed up night in Gotham. Not only does this allow the adventure to stand out from the pack, but it also harkens back to the kind of material that got me into superheroes in the first place. Plus, it has the most memorable villains of any comic book adaptation to date in Black Mask and Victor Zsasz who actually benefit from all the gaudy flair. The script is a touch bloated (why is Huntress is even in this?), it makes no sense for Harley to have not been given top billing in the title, and much like David Ayer's critical misfire it all begs the question of where are the good guys? Specifically, where's Batman? This all going down in his city at night so it's hard to not wonder why he or some other member of the Bat-family didn't get involved at some point. For all of it's flaws though I loved the smaller, more intimate approach that was taken here.

I think all of this just goes to show that if you're going to make a follow up to one of the entries in your cinematic universe, you might not want to pick the one that's arguably the worst of the bunch. You can take the most popular character from it and put them front and center, but if your still using so many of the same elements the results aren't going to be that much different. Then you have to add Harley Quinn's identity issues on top of that, as taking her content in a more hyperactive and harsher direction has betrayed so much of what made her interesting in the first place, as well as caused her to become more annoying than endearing. Something that, to the film's credit, is acknowledged multiple times by most of the people she comes in contact with. Overall, this isn't terrible, but it is a disappointing step back for the DCEU right as it had begun to redeem itself with its last few outings.

Those two seeds obviously being the undeniably prolific and popular Harley Quinn character and the slightly more esoteric Birds Of Prey comics. Both are Batman-related, yes, but the lore surrounding these two entities crossing paths in the past is scant, to say the least. So what did we end up getting in this de facto first attempt at bringing these characters together in any form, let alone on the big screen?

It's alright. A tad scatterbrained and lopsided, but an enjoyable film, nonetheless.

Margot Robbie is having a blast, but it's almost futile to think the powers-that-be cared about anything other than a chance to capitalize on the Harley Quinn craze (see Harley Quinn's contributions taking up three-quarters of the title & Warner Bros. recent, post-release rebranding of the film). Ewan McGregor is a welcomed face. Though, I couldn't help but notice that his character was a bit of a mishmash of other Batman villains, rather than being an entirely accurate portrayal of "Black Mask." Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli is quite inspired, but supremely underutilized. Again, lopsided, scatterbrained, but enjoyable. The fight scenes are a smash, the set design is interesting to look at, and even the cinematography is sleek and eye-catching. However, I'm not sure I can ever justify these characters all being in the same movie together. Did Harley Quinn really need the Birds Of Prey in order to succeed in her own movie? Why even include the Birds Of Prey, when a Harley Quinn solo film was what was so obviously teased at all along? These questions will rattle around upstairs for only the next few hours, sure, but I can't blame myself for doing so in an attempt to get closer to what exactly went wrong, what could have been and what might yet still be.

For now, though, I still think it was simply alright.

Fun, violent with a snappy script and the cast all having one hell of a good time. If you want something a bit lighter after awards season then join Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey on a fantabulous crime filled ride.

Harley and the Joker have broken up (yes that does mean Jared Leto will not be anywhere in sight, relax). After an unlikely series of events Harley Quinn teams up with Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to rescue a young girl, Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from an evil crime lord. Enter Ewan McGregor as evil crime lord Roman Sionis and his trusty henchman/personal serial killer Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina). Did you get all that? One of Suicide Squad's only redeeming qualities was Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She was the only character with any real development, not only likable but you can sympathize with her even when she's doing all kinds of mad things. Birds of Prey expands on this further only this time you've got more female characters kicking ass and not just parading around in a pair of hot pants.

The stunts are straight out of a comic book or a video game, this is far from your serious, grounded in reality comic book movie. But it's over the top without introducing anything overly far-fetched like witches or a badly CGI half man half crocodile. The action and stunts are ludicrous, particularly anything happening in the third act but hopefully you'll be too busy having a good time to notice. And if that wasn't enough, Birds of Prey also has a hyena and Ewan McGregor doing a full on 60's Batman villain performance. Seriously all that was missing was the "POW" "SNAP" "BAM" colourful bubbles whenever he's onscreen throwing a hissy fit or attempting to be menacing. It's totally bonkers from start to finish. If you enjoy comic book movies at all then be sure to check out Birds of Prey: and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.

Sinopsis:

However, the movie is not without its problems. If you go into this movie thinking its the best DC movie of all time, you are going to be sorely disappointed.

While I did thoroughly enjoy the performances of Margot Robbie and Ewan McGregor, the writing of Birds of Prey leaves a LOT to be desired. It's 2020 and DC has yet to figure out how to write a good story! The story structure borrows way too heavily from Deadpool, and honestly, the constant 4th wall breaking and narration got to be grating. The Birds of Prey are really empty characters, and I feel like I learned nothing about who they are as people. The best part of the plot was seeing Harley Quinn post breakup. The whole story about the diamond macguffin thing was really stupid, and I couldn't care less about it.

The action and direction is pretty fun. I can't lie, I found a lot of that to be really enjoyable. I also really liked how they didn't shy away from how violent a lot of the characters are, especially Harley Quinn herself. This isn't a movie I think I will ever willingly seek out again, but I would be lying if I said I hated the entire thing.

Despite the film being called Birds of Prey, which was a team comprise of women superheroes, this film is really a Harley Quinn movie. The movie is even narrated and told in the perspective of Harley Quinn. They probably should've called the movie Harley Quinn and friends. I loved Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad despite how garbage that movie was so it is great to see her star in her own film.

One of the things I loved about this movie was the fact that it gave a relatively realistic portrayal of Harley Quinn dealing with the breakup with Joker. She didn't just move on straight away, she swallowed herself in sadness and anger before accepting her new self. I also have to praise the rest of the cast and characters as well. Jurnee Smollett-Bell shines as Black Canary by giving a badass women character and Mary Elizabeth Winstead for giving a ferocious performance as Huntress. It is a real shame however, that for a film called Birds of Prey, we don't actually to get see much of the "Birds of Prey". Ewan Mcgregor gives a great performance as Black Mask despite how poorly written the character is. There is honestly nothing about Black Mask, he is just a typical ass villain with no depth to himself whatever or even genuine motivation or backstory. He wants power and diamonds and that is all there is to him. On the other hand, despite the small screentime Chris Messina is able to give a fair amount of character towards the secondary villain Victor Zsasz. This is based on a source material so I have to give a nod to the fact that the character of Cassandra Cain played by Ella Jay Basco is butchered and kind of pathetic. Movies of course don't have to be the same as the source material and the change to the character was necessary for Harley Quinn and the story they were telling. However, there is no really stand out moments from Cassandra Cain with the only memorable thing was stealing and getting saved all the time. A shame really.

Despite the relatively lower budget of this film compared to typical superhero movies, the action scenes are phenomenal and well choreographed. Additionally, the soundtrack is unique and adds towards the movie. The movie also has a great visual style with colourful sets and storytelling with a chaotic order that adds to Harley's character. Still, the screenplay is not great honestly. Some of the dialogue are quite cheesy, generic or lacking in genuine banter between the characters. By the end of the film, I didn't really feel like the bond between these characters were earned or should even exist. I also think it should be noted that this is a feminist film and it really shows. For example, there is not even remotely one good male character in this entire film. It really pushes the women power message straight in your face which could have been done a little better.

Nevertheless, despite the flaws, this movie continues to be a step in the right direction for the DCEU and I hope Warner Bros continues to maintain and exceed this quality of superhero movies. To anyone reading this, I recommend giving this movie a watch because even if there are some issues with the movie, you will still come out feeling that you had a good time.

It's really evident that the director and the people behind this really had a blast working on it.

Although, I thought the script is a bit messy and the first ~40 minutes of this are spent with setting up plot-lines through constant flashbacks which I wasn't too much of a fan of.

Despite those flaws, the film exudes a slick style from Cathy Yan, and is a total blast.

The writer and director clearly have some issues with their relationship with men, because the movie does project a clear resentment towards men: all male characters are evil and / or stupid. So much rhetoric about equality and stereotyping women, and you go and do the exact same thing to men. Anyway, the acting is merely ok: not bad, but nothing to write home about except for M. Robbie, which nails the character again. Action scenes: some are better than others, which may be due to the reshoots / additions. Portrayal of the original DC characters: the only one I took issue with was Cassandra. In the comics, she's the toughest, most badass Batgirl ever to carry that name. Here she's just some kleptomaniac, obnoxious brat with zero background that simply acts as a plot device to bring the team together. Music does the job, photography too. The writing is simplistic and peppered with androphobia, but bearable. The chaotic pseudo-Tarantino way in which the story is told may confuse some viewers, but I understand it is an attempt at conveying Harley's state of mind. All in all, an OK film deserving a 5 or a 6. If watching women beat up men twice their size for two hours makes you feel vindicated for the injustices in your life, I can see how your score may be higher, but in terms of movie quality, more than a 6 is unjustified.
