It is riddled with inconsistancies like magicaly appearing props and dissapearing characters/conflicts. Worse, it commits a cardinal sin by making its characters, who inhabit a fictional universe, mouthpieces for modern real world agendas. It makes the characters into jarringly inconsistent crazy quilts - not in a good-crazy (joker) way but in a really poorly crafted (suicide squad) way. It forces Harley through a spaghetti press; shes a mass murdering psychopath but also a role model of the feminine independant from men. So she can kiIl some people with impunity but cant cross certain lines. She completely spares a police station by using non lethal force but switches back to bone breaking and murder on bikers. This could be cool if the charactrer was outlined and reinforced by this behavior but no good reason for it is given- which clarifies that the choices are being made for reasons outside the storyline and universe (for us, the viewers). Its not subtle. It even literally says the name of a real world politician she voted for. Harley Quinn (a mass murderer who abducts girls) votes for Bernie. Solid endorsement. You morons. To be clear: a good movie could be written about this character. . . This is just not it. Heres some better themes: stockholm syndrom, domestic violence, co dependency issues, Girl Boss Issues, dealing with physical inferiority, and the consumate fear in a super hero world - and evening the odds... All good feminist issues, all related to the character and consistent with the universe. . Expand

While this has led to some amusing results and is responsible for much of the character's ever-growing popularity, she has yet to match her obvious inspiration in terms of cleverness and originality. Nowhere has that been more evident than in this movie.

While I'm happy to see to see another studio follow in Fox's footsteps by making a R-rated superhero flick in this post-MCU market, the more mature and graphic content this allows for never feels as good a fit for Joker's ex as it did for Wolverine and the merc with a mouth. So all the F-bombs, gore, and raunchy humor end up coming off as sad attempts to be edgy more often than not.

One of the more divisive aspects of 2016's Suicide Squad was it's Hot Topic visual aesthetic. It returns here and might actually be worse this time around. I really hope Warner Bros. ditches it going forward because I'm tired of the way it makes classic characters like Black Canary look ratchet. As much as I loved Jurnee Smollett-Bell in the role and want to see her return to it in a Green Arrow movie or something, her wardrobe was a consistent problem for me. With a few exceptions, the heroes and villains that have been unfortunate enough to find themselves in this corner of the DCEU have been subject to bad designs.

Birds of Prey also lags behind other superhero films in the action department. It's hard to take Quinn herself seriously when her foes are clearly just standing there and letting her beat the crap out of them. Even when there are people onscreen who can believably carry a fight scene the choreography is usually sloppy. I wasn't expecting John Wick or anything, but this is well below the standards set by its peers.

The story was the saving grace for me. There's no potential world ending threat here. It's just another messed up night in Gotham. Not only does this allow the adventure to stand out from the pack, but it also harkens back to the kind of material that got me into superheroes in the first place. Plus, it has the most memorable villains of any comic book adaptation to date in Black Mask and Victor Zsasz who actually benefit from all the gaudy flair. The script is a touch bloated (why is Huntress is even in this?), it makes no sense for Harley to have not been given top billing in the title, and much like David Ayer's critical misfire it all begs the question of where are the good guys? Specifically, where's Batman? This all going down in his city at night so it's hard to not wonder why he or some other member of the Bat-family didn't get involved at some point. For all of it's flaws though I loved the smaller, more intimate approach that was taken here.

I think all of this just goes to show that if you're going to make a follow up to one of the entries in your cinematic universe, you might not want to pick the one that's arguably the worst of the bunch. You can take the most popular character from it and put them front and center, but if your still using so many of the same elements the results aren't going to be that much different. Then you have to add Harley Quinn's identity issues on top of that, as taking her content in a more hyperactive and harsher direction has betrayed so much of what made her interesting in the first place, as well as caused her to become more annoying than endearing. Something that, to the film's credit, is acknowledged multiple times by most of the people she comes in contact with. Overall, this isn't terrible, but it is a disappointing step back for the DCEU right as it had begun to redeem itself with its last few outings.

Boring action, slow and very predictable plot...and sadly (this is a comedy after all) bad jokes: Poop jokes, offensively-worded shirt jokes, girl who-look-like-a- supermodel that drool on junk food jokes.
Also annoing child sidekick, supporting characters are practically just wallpaper and harley isn't dark or "mad"...she just seems dumb and puerile...she act and look like a drunken version of Tank Girl (and I like Tank girl in her movie...not here).
Maybe very young vieviewers can find it entertaining if they watch it with friends just to make fun of the movie.
If you want to see some H. Queen just watch one of the Dc animated movie or her animated series. I liked Margot intepretation of Harley a lot more in Suicide squad (but that also was not a great movie).

Suicide squad and Ghostbusters 2016 had a baby, and it’s the ugliest and cheapest looking 100 million dollar movie you have ever seen. Come to find out that some of the scenes and action where shot so poorly they had to spend ridiculous money to fix this abortion of a movie. Even got the guy from John Wick to help fix some scenes. Honestly,it says a lot about the the director, who had never taken on a big project before, and it shows. Even a simpleton like me could see what she was going for. ( even though she failed big time)
Tryin to be Guy Richie, making a female deadpool movie. Prob would’ve been better if you jus directed it with your own style instead of copy and pasting everything we’ve seen a billion times.
The writer of this movie is good. Loved some of the work she’s done ( bumblebee) but this is a terrible story with so many plot holes, you can tell she has no connection to the source material or any knowledge of who Harley Quinn is or what makes fans love her so much, what a waste.

Last but not least Margot Robbie is an amazing actress.having said that she must love the smell of her own farts because she takes up 99% of the screen time. It got joker the Oscar maybe it will work for me (eye roll).

Please don’t waste your time with this garbage and tell Hollywood that we are not as dumb as you think we are. Negative STARS!!!!!

They picked a great time to release it due to the fact the Harley Quinn is really hot right now. They are pushing her and people are taking a liking to this new anti-hero. Birds of Prey is a fun movie that is bug nuts crazy, but super enjoyable. I had a good time while watching it. A lot of the jokes miss yet the ones that hit are genuinely funny. For me it was Black Mask played by Ewan Mcgregor who steals the show. He knows he is in a comic book movie and just makes the film his own. Seriously ever second he is on screen playing his psycho mob boss made me want a Goodfellas style movie with him in it. The movie is rated R which helps it a lot. I enjoyed this film and would recommend it for a fun rental to drinks a couple of beers with and enjoy some popcorn just for a good time. Expand

The superhero movies of the year 2020 kicks off with the eighth instalment of DC Extended Universe, which features the return of Harley Quinn, who was last seen in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and the official debut of Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain in the big screen.

Taking place after the events of Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn (Robbie) officially declare her break up with the Joker publicly by destroying Ace Chemical factory using an oil tanker and throw away the necklace given to her from him. Her reckless actions have caused an open season on her head by many criminals in Gotham City who wants revenge on her now that they don’t have to fear retaliation from Joker himself.

Meanwhile, Roman Sionis/Black Mask (McGregor) sends Victor Zsasz and Dinah Lance/Black Canary to retrieve a valuable diamond which originally belong to a now extinct Mafia crime family. They successfully got the diamond without problem until a young street thief named Cassandra Cain (Basco) stole the diamond from Zsasz but she got arrested by the police soon after when she is caught for stealing other items.

Not happy with the diamond being stolen and the young thief now in police custody, Black Mask captures Harley and force her to retrieve the diamond from Cassandra in exchange for immunity from criminals wanting revenge on her. Black Canary secretly inform Detective Renee Montoya, who have been chasing after Black Mask for months. A mysterious assassin named Helena Bertinelli/Huntress, who have been killing criminals that is responsible for her family massacre, joins the party and everyone will soon cross paths with each other.

When this movie was first announced, I was expecting the movie will end up being bad just like Suicide Squad. However, I am happy to report that Birds of Prey is not bad and quite good. The movie is just like a combination of Deadpool and John Wick movies. Full of fun, violence and dark humours. The story is very much simple to follow and not too complicated. Christina Hodson have done a great job with her writing in this movie much like how she has done with 2018’s Bumblebee. Cathy Yan have proved herself to be a good director and yet this is her second feature film in her career. Not bad for her. She has done an outstanding job.

The performance from the casts are simply amazing. Margot Robbie and Ewan McGregor played their roles very well. Margot is still great as Harley just like she has portrayed her character in her last appearance and still never lost her touch. As for Ewan McGregor, he really done a great job in playing a ruthless and menacing villain. Aside from them, Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, whom they played Black Canary and Huntress respectively have done a great job too, especially the latter who manage to steal the show when she has the least amount of screen time compared to the others. As for Rosie Perez and Ella Jay Basco, they done good job in their performance but for Ella, her character bears no resemblance to her comic book counterpart which hurts the movie a little. Hopefully in the next movie, she will have a better character development into her comic book counterpart.

The fighting scenes in this movie are very well shot by Chad Stahelski, who is well known as the director of John Wick movies. Using his experience from those movies, he has made the fighting scenes looked awesome and violent just like what was seen in John Wick movies. While the movie is great, there are some flaws. I felt the movie is a little too short on the runtime and should have been longer since this is a team movie. Despite being a team movie, the characters did not spend much time on screen together until the final act.

Although the story is simple to follow, there are not many surprises in the movie as there are no cameos from Joker and even Batman. Not even a plot twist which I personally think it’s better not to have one because it may ruin the narrative of the story in a bad way. Even with all these flaws at the end of the day, Birds of Prey is so much better team movie than Suicide Squad and even 2017’s Justice League. That said, I look forward to see Harley again in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in 2021. With DC Extended Universe now having four good movies including this one, I hope to see the franchise keep moving forward. There is no post credits scene but there is a post-credits audio sequence from Harley Quinn. Next stop: Wonder Woman 1984.

Birds of Prey is a Harley Quinn movie whose every attribute is just as sloppily scrambled as the mind of Harley Quinn.
Along the same Harley-esque lines, despite all odds this film accidentally succeeds in some small ways. This script is a mess of time jumps and irritating/unreliable narration from one Harley Quinn. It fails to invest you in Harley or any of its characters before throwing them into action set piece after action set piece, as is the typical failing of nearly any bad comic book movie. Sometimes, the pacing of such films partially save them from this lack of attachment. Unfortunately Harley Quinns's pacing is grinded to a halt and even rewinded once or twice by its time jumps. The film attempts to excuse this nonsensical mess it makes as a result of scatter-brained Harley narrating the story. Although tying the structure of a film to an unreliable narrator's mental instability is a concept I like in theory (and have liked in films like Memento and Synechdoche, New York), the characters in Birds of Prey lack the substance to pull it off. Quick-fire complaints time. The action was creative but marred by slowmo and fastmo. A pop-filled soundtrack cannot replace the identity a composed score brings to a film. Ewan McGregor's hilarious performance was marred by a needless pervy, Joffrey wannabe scene. The costume designer spent so much time making Harley's costumes flawless that every other character's costumes suffered. Birds of Prey shows a lot of promise for what could have been. It is definitely a step up from Suicide Squad, but not a big one. It's doing well in the box office so we may get another one. Hopefully the next iteration has better direction. Costuming is not something I usually mention in my reviews. This film warrants it. The costume designers seem to have spent so much time focusing on Harley that they nearly forgot about every other character. Why was Huntress wearing a wonky chain across her body? I can tell you it's not from the comics. Why was Detective Montoya wearing a t-shirt that said "I shaved my balls for this" for half the film? For one lame joke from the captain? Why does Black Mask's mask look so cheap? There are character excuses for all of these things. Huntress is trying to be an edgelord. Montoya is a drunk. Black Mask is a super-villain wannabe. These excuses unfortunately don't make these costumes look any less bad.

There ARE actually episodes in for example:"Batman the animated series" where Harley Quinn runs away from the Joker and does solo stuff or teams up with Poision Ivy. THESE are actually verry enjoyable and Harley is badass in these episodes but not because shes forced to, not like in this dumpsterfire. Everybody that knows the Lore about Harley Quinn knows that shes NOT a toxic, vomiting **** that wears the biggest trash she could find (also talking about red-blue hair) and starts beef with everyone that crosses her path and thinks that sehs the greatest person ever and no one can harm her. After all she has a P.h.D. You could litterly just needed to copy/paste a good comic episode of her. Aves de Presa (2020)

Sinopsis:

This is exceptionally poor quality for 100 years of film. It feels like Margot Robbie took the character a bit too far from who she is. If you're a fan of Harley in the comics(though she was created on Batman Animated Series) and like her in Suicide Squad - don't watch this. I can deal with feminism, (even the heavy stuff) after all it was men who created this character and men who appreciate her just like Wonder Woman. The problem lies in what seems to be Margot Robbie's ,"vision," for a female archtype anti-hero. This is just not the character to do it with. As we all know, Harley doesn't set out to be the ,"bad girl taking on bad guys." She becomes an excellent hero without the help of Suicide Squad, or reflection on the Joker. A true hero, and dare I say one of the greatest of all time. This film makes it about Harley having more than a series of moments where as an ordinary woman she was abused, rejected, and oppressed just because. It makes no sense, and the flashbacks should have been cut completely. The female heroes of this film are displayed counter to their origin and their comic literature. This is nothing more than a Novella or a Lifetime movie. I expect much better from Margot Robbie given her stellar performances so far and I respect her acting chops. The production in this film is so low bar, it feels like a high school musical with dirty closeups and unusual sexual exploitation followed up as ,"I shot you," and ,"no I shot you first," by children with a kung fu fetish. As a man, I generally enjoy a fantasy utilizing my favorite female leads with wild female characters. This gave me uncomfortable feelings for how Margot Robbie picks and chooses when to be sexy or when to project feminine superiority. Given a society with multiple genders being recognized, where was the inclusivity as well? There's some gay representation but no trans, queer, or queer racial. From a right wing standpoint, this movie is offensive. From a left wing standpoint, this movie is difficult to watch, boring, misogynistic and exploitative given the #metoo and makes no attempt to rectify those shortcomings. If I was a woman and watched this, I would be offended. This is not just cringe despite what others have said. I've seen far worse. But this is a terrible way to turn the lights off. What is this film about? Broken white girl rescue operation? I even liked Suicide Squad and was excited to see a Harley film. This is not what I was hoping for from such a beloved example of perseverance. A beloved character that men celebrate just as much as Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman has only recently become a feminist(for some as most women disagree with her character) project and has always been coveted by men as a true hero. To see yet another DC character just misused and given away to an actor without oversight is a pity. I feel the cast leaned too hard on the idea of being badass chicks instead of badass heroes with a soul and a purpose. Redemption. This is just an awful film. Truly awful. Expand

The nasally twang to her voice, her dumbness, her look. I know I’m not the target audience and it was probably a foregone conclusion that I wouldn’t like it all that much, but for a film to be so awful it’s unwatchable, that’s quite rare.

I think it was the point where Harley had drunk herself into a stupor, and was therefore at the mercy of the creep in the alleyway, that I realised I’d had enough. That and Ewen McGregor (was he just slumming it for the pay cheque?).

Maybe the end was spectacular and if I’d held on the movie would have redeemed itself. But I just couldn’t bear it. As it was, it took watching it (via iTunes) in three separate chunks to get to roundabout the halfway point.

If you thought Suicide Squad couldn’t get any worse, you were wrong.

They tried to make an R-rated, low-stakes, non-serious superhero movie and say the F word a few times, like Deadpool.
Harley Quinn's not Deadpool. Why bother?

They tried to keep it simple. Unfortunately, it's so simple you can spot the ending from a mile away.

Is it fun? Eh, kinda. There are a lot of elaborate, visually interesting set-pieces, and not much tying them together. You watch Harley creatively take out nameless thugs who can't figure out how to point and shoot. I watched this movie in halves because I was falling asleep in the middle.

I think the main problem is the characters. This version of Harley Quinn does not make for much of a main character. It doesn't help that the side characters are never really fleshed out. One lingers in the background, unnamed for almost all of the movie. The main villain is a real bad guy, but why does anyone tolerate his twisted torture? We know why we should hate him, but why is he in charge?

It was no Suicide Squad, so it has that going for it.

Otherwise it's just a middle of the road movie that generally avoids falling on its face as it admirably but lazily tries to work DC's character development muscles out of atrophy. The other three titular Birds tend to blend into the wallpaper of Harley's character arc, Zsasz is extremely un-Zsasz-like, and the story repeatedly tries too hard to pull off the same old beats, but I can't give it too much crap. Anytime DC makes a movie that achieves mere passability, I stop and take notice.

This was the comic book movie equivalent of iceberg lettuce with a few croutons of fun sprinkled on top.

OK I know feminism is the best money vacuum now. But this is the direcotor's understandig of feminism? Being independent because I got dumped??? What the **** is wrong with you dear director? And for IDK reason this is a super hero movie that directed by "first asian female director", but it dosen't mean its great. Its horrible, I want to spoon my ****ing eyeballs out then step on them. It causes me both mentally and physical pain. PLZ dont waste your time watching this. You can watch sun goes up and down for a day from horizon to horizon will be a better way to kill time. At least after doing this, you will appreciate life more. And I also dont recommend this as a date night movie, cause after watching this I am 100% positive you will have either a huge fight or a semi. This director twisted feminism, independence to vacuum money for its own benefit. I hope this director never got hired again to film anything anymore. And I also beg everyone to destroy all physical copies of this movie. If COVID-19 wiped out humanity, at least we can do something for the next generation from being metally and physically damaged by this movie. Expand

The writer and director clearly have some issues with their relationship with men, because the movie does project a clear resentment towards men: all male characters are evil and / or stupid. So much rhetoric about equality and stereotyping women, and you go and do the exact same thing to men. Anyway, the acting is merely ok: not bad, but nothing to write home about except for M. Robbie, which nails the character again. Action scenes: some are better than others, which may be due to the reshoots / additions. Portrayal of the original DC characters: the only one I took issue with was Cassandra. In the comics, she's the toughest, most badass Batgirl ever to carry that name. Here she's just some kleptomaniac, obnoxious brat with zero background that simply acts as a plot device to bring the team together. Music does the job, photography too. The writing is simplistic and peppered with androphobia, but bearable. The chaotic pseudo-Tarantino way in which the story is told may confuse some viewers, but I understand it is an attempt at conveying Harley's state of mind. All in all, an OK film deserving a 5 or a 6. If watching women beat up men twice their size for two hours makes you feel vindicated for the injustices in your life, I can see how your score may be higher, but in terms of movie quality, more than a 6 is unjustified. Loved The Joker. Really enjoyed it. Was so hyped when I saw this. I couldn't make it passed 40 minutes. This movie is trash. Everything about it is garbage.

Visually it's beautiful, with a lot of vibrant colours, great directing / cinematography, awesome fight scenes (thank you R-rating) and some cool, unexpected animation, but it was also pretty well written and so funny. Everyone shines in their role, from the fabulous Margot Robbie to the almost unrecognizable Chris Messina (I had to do like, three takes to make sure it was actually him). It's not the gimmick-y, girl group!!!!!! movie that I was expecting, and that probably made me enjoy it even more. Loved this! Expand

Was looking forward to this as I really liked what they did with Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad but this film is a big letdown; the overall style is really childish and quirky but super violent it just doesn't make sense.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is a bore.
The choreography of the fighting scenes are worst then a ninja movie from the 80s.
Thé actors can't act. They lack depth, charisma, etc... You could replace most of them with a wooden plank.
What's the plot??

The changes to them are bewilderingly stupid at times and the writer seems to know barely anything about them, showing little to no respect for the foundations of these characters laid out in the comic books. Perhaps she was drunk at 1am writing it and briefly read some summaries on the wiki and said "I totally got this", then proceeded to spew whatever she could onto the page before passing out blackout drunk. Just a guess. Expand

It is by far the worst written film of the DCEU, Yes even above Suicide Squad. Nearly every new character introduced did not need to be in this film, They tried to introduced too much and for no good reason.

The Huntress had absolutely no relevance to the plot. Montoya is just a generic cop character that was totally unnecessary. Zsasz was totally miscast and was by far the worst character in the movie. Black Canary had potential but was poorly utilized.

Birds of Prey is a perfect example of not just a terribly written movie but an example of a production that clearly had no idea wtf it was doing.

The script structure doesn’t makes sense, it throws away the rhythm of the film. The photography isn’t bad, but it isn’t good neither. The visual effects are maybe the best thing of the film. And the post-credit scene is absolutely a terrible mistake. I don’t want films like this in the DCEU. For me, this isn’t canon

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An average movie that unfortunately gets worse as it goes on. In particular:
The fight choreography was terrible for everyone except Harley Quinn.
The casting options were weird and didn't really work.
The story was weak and poorly structured.

Margot Robbie was the only thing that held this movie together at all.

Uff what a waste of time. There is nothing remarkable about the movie, nor is it funny, to be honest I'm not sure who is the target for this mess
