The dialog was masterful and and the performances had me believing I, too, was paranoid and insecure. Kudos to director Alejandro González Iñárritu and his financial backers for taking such a bold risk, something largely absent in Hollywood. And any film that questions the credibility and relevance of critics get extra points. GO SEE! Expand

The script is delightful and witty as he cleverly uses magical realism to near perfect effect as he examines the failure and fulfillment of fictional actor/director, Riggan Thomson.

The protagonist's on screen and off screen struggles whirl around at a dizzying pace as the camera follows him through the narrow shabby, sets, halls and rooftops of the theater. Seamlessly the audience slides along with him from one stormy long take to the next spirited long take. Skillfully, acted and choreographed, the camera follows the players through the grimy backstage of a broadway play as the fragile production teeters on collapse at every turn.

The accident ridden production reflects Riggan's internal strife as he teeters on the edge mental breakdown. Haunted by inexorable unconscious voices that foment both his ambition and self doubt, he struggles to be the artist he envisions . . . if only he doesn't destroy the whole thing himself along the way. Take this certain "Best Picture" nominee roller coaster ride and hold on with two hands.

"Birdman" is a breath of fresh air, much in the same way as "Being John Malkovich" and "Her" were when they came out. From the first scene until the last, "Birdman" moves in unexpected ways. Like any film, you can nitpick here and there, but I'll take a film that takes chances like this over 90% of the mediocrity that Hollywood spews out every year. The cast is first rate. A lot has been said about the performances of Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone in the film, but Naomi Watts is also very good. I don't understand why she isn't getting the same Oscar buzz as the other three cast members. Alejandro González Iñárritu has done it again. Expand

InarrituIts deft balance between dark and light elements as well as its strikingly original cinematography, grit, and epiphanic insights into identity and individuality distinguishes it as one of the best of the year, if not the very best. Inarritu immaculately chooses bleak colour palettes and a nuanced percussive score to illustrate an atmosphere that teems with energy, electricity and realism, fleshing out vivid characters with great acting and even better dialogue. 'Birdman' is a character study, a deliciously intelligent satire and a dark comedy, all wrapped up in one gorgeous masterwork of true visual art. Expand

These are the types of films that remind the masses why movies are so important and entertaining. This film offers themes of duality, comedy, family, depression, drug/alcohol abuse, and esteem; everything you would not only want but need in a piece of art like this. Such an unorthodox and nontraditional movie, but that's what makes it perfect. I love how the film looked like it was done in one shot as well. Definitely the best movie of 2014. Expand

The story is gripping and groundbreaking, the performance from the stellar ensemble are awesome and the filming is a joy to behold. Edward Norton and Michael Keaton in particular give performances of towering splendour. The last movie I saw twice at the cinema was Pulp Fiction but I found I could not resist re-watching this. Having seen it a second time I feel it's like a great album...very good at first but something that reveals itself more clearly with repeated listenings (or in this case viewings). I could happily see it for a third time. Expand

Quem sou eu? Você é BIRDMAN.
A busca.

Alejandro González Iñárritu wonderfully makes it feel like you are fully involved with the whole cast and film with his excellent camera work and editing, making it feel like it’s all one shot: which it almost is. The acting is also top notch with elevated performances from Michael Keaton and Edward Norton and every other actor being superb in all their roles too. The story is also quite possibly the most original thing to have come out in the last 5-10 years maybe. The use of cinematography along with symbolism is flawlessly executed throughout the film and it is a joy to watch from start to finish, never dipping.
Now, the plot is basically a man who used to be a superhero star (Michael Keaton) wants to become relevant again and be taken seriously 20 years after his money making break as Birdman, and to do so he is putting on a Broadway theatre play that he writes, directs and stars in. However, he is struggling to keep stable as many things awry up and make him even more anxious about showing the play. It also doesn’t help that his old Birdman persona is mocking him narratively in his head. Each character is then fleshed out through the stories happenings and every character feels necessary and put to full affect in the film.
Another thing, this film gets it spot on with one scene that had me grinning about snooty, up themselves critics that see themselves above the theatrical world and how they label things instead of actually dissecting films/theatre etc. The scene played out wonderfully, but then again every scene does in this film.
Overall, this film was masterfully crafted. Acting, directing, characters, plot, cinematography, dialogue, themes and comedy are all implemented in an untouchable way that cements it as one of the greatest films of this day and age.

I'd like to focus on the portrayal, through the script and Michael Keaton's outstanding performance, of the lead character's "ascent" into madness as he becomes more like the Birdman. As a mental health professional, I would recommend this movie to all others in the field and anyone interested in mental health. Although the movie is about an actor searching for meaning, validity and understanding in life, these are universal issues which most people seek answers to. Whether or not we are successful in reconciling these issues in our own minds goes a long way in determining our psychological balance. Expand

I swear if this movie is not nominated for Best Picture in the Oscars, I am going to kill myself.

Watching Birdman is like riding a great two hour long roller coaster. It goes up when an intense scene goes on and it goes down when everything seems fine and then it goes up again when it’s intense and so on.

Birdman feels like it’s a semi-autobiography movie for Michael Keaton. I did not see his other movies including his run as Batman but his performance in this movie alone is enough for me to agree that he is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. I do hope this movie gives him more roles to do in the future now he received tons of critical acclaim on his performance.

I like how Michael Keaton did not overshadow the other cast in the movie because the cast performance is brilliant. It seemed like they’re real people in this movie. My favorite performers in this movie besides Michael Keaton were Edward Norton and Emma Stone. They both had their great moments in this movie.

The movie’s plot relies on character development and they did a good job doing that. The movie’s plot also relies on social commentary about Hollywood which they were on point about it especially about “washed up” actors trying to be relevant again as well as the “snobby critics” which was my favorite scene in the entire movie.

I don’t usually comment on musical scores in this movie but I cannot ignore the score in this movie because it was really good. The use of the drums in this movie as a score is perfectly used considering the intense tone of the movie.

The direction from Alejandro González Iñárritu in this movie is amazing. Not to forget that this movie excel the “shot in one take” style of filming very well. It feels like they really shot the movie in one take thanks to clever editing skills.

Birdman could be an Oscar winner next year thanks to its brilliant cast performance especially from Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone as well as great character development, on-point social commentary about Hollywood, really good musical score, amazing direction from Alejandro González Iñárritu and its well-done “shot in one take” filming style.

Birdman is easily not only one of my favorite movies of 2014 but as well as one of my favorite movies of all-time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Birdman is an unusually fulfilling black comedy with superb writing and excellent direction. The cinematography is absolute perfection with the use of one continuous shot throughout the entire film, giving cohesion to the narrative. The story was realistic and intriguing putting a washed-up superhero actor into the shoes of a washed-up superhero actor. Keaton's portrayal of Kiggan is brilliant, giving an Oscar-worthy performance that raises the question of how much of it was really acting? Edward Norton and Emma Stone also deliver phenomenal performances in an all around fantastic film.

Of course Birdman isn't for everyone given its use of art film techniques, but that should not detract from its brilliantly obscure story-telling. If this film is foreshadowing the future of superhero actors then bring on the Robert Downey Jr theatre productions.

It ventures into the stage performance, film industry, the fight between the integrity and mind of the artists, the critics, the over bloating superheroes film in Hollywood; all are perfectly crafted into the life of an old actor who is struggling with his egoism in attempting to recover both his career and family. This journey of crisis, transformation, battling of stressful emotions and the inner powerful demon of himself are well played by Michael Keaton, thanks to the strong and loud jazz drum scores as well as magical, thrilling, ambitious style of delivering by Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu. The mind blowing and overwhelming development might make the audiences to feel that this film about art and life is imitating Nolan's style of cinematography, but the ambiguous ending has rather more complex which gives the opportunity to the audiences to decide whether to end it positively or negatively. Why? There is a scene in “Birdman” where Riggan Thompson (played by Michael Keaton), who is trying to direct and star in his Broadway adaptation of the Raymond Carver play “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love”, walks towards the front of the stage and talks about love, what it is to be loved, and how we all crave that. But is it love we crave? Or, as Sam (played by Emma Stone) puts it, is Riggan confusing love with admiration? These are some of the many wide-ranging questions that “Birdman” leaves you with as you leave the cinema and you thus don’t really realise how good the cast, direction, dialogue and score are until you’ve given up on those questions, realising that they are just too difficult to answer.
The cast is simply stellar in “Birdman”, brilliantly led by Michael Keaton in what Variety’s Peter Debruge calls the “comeback of the century” and which I agree with him over. However, I’m not sure if Michael Keaton would accept this title, in a recent interview promoting the film he laughed at the concept, yet the comparisons between his career and that of Riggans are unavoidable, he also laughed when this was bought up too. But, to be fair, all I knew of Michael Keaton before I saw “Birdman” was that he had starred in the 1989 “Batman” film as well as in its 1992 sequel “Batman Returns”. His career hasn’t been stellar and it’s a surprise I even knew his name before I saw “Birdman” really… But his performance in this film deserves all the attention he gets and all the awards he is being nominated for. Riggan is a complex character and you are never quite sure about him, how he feeling and how he feels towards others, not only because of how Riggan changes as the film goes on but also because of how that reflects the ever-changing nature of the film, moving from one question or theme to the other without actually leaving it behind, instead leaving it in the back of your mind for you to think about later.
Again, as I said earlier, the rest of the cast is great too. Edward Norton is brilliant (playing the self-obsessed, ego-driven actor who feels more real on the stage than off it, Mike Shiner). But then Miles is so much more than that and again it’s hard to put your finger on what or who he is and what he is looking for. Zach Galifanakis (playing Riggan’s agent, Jake) who is trying to keep Riggan grounded, is also brilliant and then so is Emma Stone and Naomi Watts (although both seem to be in very familiar roles). I could go on listing actors and actresses but it would just be a paragraph of names. (Last one I promise but Amy Ryan also does well playing Riggan’s ex-wife Slyvia.)
But each of these is alleviated, and should thanking him in any of their Oscars speeches, by the film’s director, Alejandro González Iñárritu. Alejandro hasn’t done many English-Language films before (except Babel in 2006 and 21 Grams in 2003), and considering that, it makes his direction in “Birdman” even more outstanding. Where he really excels is in how “Birdman” is seemingly filmed in one take. These really emphasise how good the acting is in this film, be it a monologue by Emma Stone as she rants at her dad, a take that involves Michael Keaton walking in just his underpants through Times Square, or a scene where Keaton and Edward Norton rehearse on stage. What makes these one takes even better is how the film is almost entirely set in St. James Theatre and you really get a feel for it as you glide around it in these one takes, feeling, seeing and hearing everything that is going on. It truly is an experience. I loved every moment of it and what this ultimately did for me was make me feel like I was part of the production, as if I was being given this behind the scenes look at what was going on. This thrill inspired me to get back into acting, something that I used to do a lot of. What happens with this you as the film goes on, you begin to realise that this is less of a trip to the cinema and more of a trip to the theatre. It’s a good mix of both and I can’t really imagine it being the same on DVD, although it never is. I will definitely be seeing it again.

Birdman’s dialogue is great too and it matches the fast-paced score of “Birdman”. Both match how unique “Birdman” is. And that is where its brilliance lies. Just like how when you are in a production and the curtains come down on closing night you come to think that you really did not want that to end, and I had the same feeling when “Birdman” did. Its cast, score and direction are all what will be directly nominated come the Oscars, but there is no specific award for the questions “Birdman” made me think about, the way “Birdman” made me feel and the lessons “Birdman” taught me.

Birdman is a holy original and masterful piece of work from Alejandro G. Iñárritu. This features the best ensemble cast of 2014, some of the best editing I’ve ever seen and is one of the best movies of 2014.

After seeing the horrible and over-hyperd Boyhood and the lackluster Gone Girl, this was a much needed glimmer of hope.

This film grabbed my attention from the get-go. It was a mish mosh of arthouse, big-budget, independent but with a theatre feel to it. I was about 5 mins in before I had to ask myself, 'Is this all one shot?!" The film flowed scene to scene effortlessly, giving the feeling of one continuous shot, a remarkable feat by director, cinematograher and editor (all deserving of awards). It gave a sort of theatre atmosphere to the film that brought you into their world and made you feel like a fly on the wall, observing but not intruding.

The dialogue was well-written and the acting performances all around were top notch. Michael Keaton is phenomenal, as he portrays an actor in the twilight and dwindling years of his career, trying to stay relevant and risking everything to do so. His alter-ego subconcious plays a significant role in his psyche that appears to affect the world around him. It gives us a glimpse into his world and allows us to better understand the character.

You can easily tell that a lot of planning, consideration, care and thought went into making this film. It's not a gimmick, but an amazing accomplishment by everyone involved in the making of. It's not a movie that needs to be explained or defended, it stands on it's own, delivers a clear message, but still leaves a little personal interpretation for the audience.

For those of us who grew up with Keaton films, there's the added nostalgia and links to his film past as the Batman and his alter-ego (Birdman) almost as a Beetlejuice feel to it. I can't say enough good things about his performance, watching him reminded me of what real acting should be and I have no doubt that his co-actors raised their game to this new standard.

The arthouse-like score blended the film together from beginning to end, giving a more anxious feeling and sense of urgency, appropriate to the scenes and story. There were few slow spots in the film, but were necessary for the audience to relax before bringing us back into the moment. The SFX were very well done and again, major kudos have to be given considering this appeared to be a single shot throughout (I'm still blown-away by it).

NYC was the perfect backdrop; the landscape and sounds virtually took me there and for 2 hours I forgot I wasn't.

This is a must-see film for anyone (except those who only like $200 million Michael Bay action/explosion-porn movies). Easily in my top 5 of all time

We see him from behind, in just his underwear, levitating off the ground. The former superhero movie star is in his Broadway dressing room looking out onto the world from his window. All the while a voice in his head is growling, the devil on his shoulder, judging his every move.
Keaton plays a washed up actor who used to be a box office superhero star decades before. He is trying to get his last big hit on Broadway, which he directs and in which stars. But for Riggan, it is hard because his alter-ego makes him doubt himself all the time. His alter superhero background in the film is clearly an allusion to Keaton’s role as Batman back in 1989 and this realistic film references other box office superheroes such as Robert Downey Jr. and Jeremy Renner by making jokes about how they’re all “wearing capes now.”
Birdman guides you through a journey of tight staircases and crowded hallways. You experience the fictional flight of Riggan, escaping his daily stress as he soars above skyscrapers. You can feel the pain of Emma Stone’s character, Sam, as she watches her father’s rapid break down. These perfectly choreographed shots are just the beginning of the many things that are great about Birdman. Every scene is accompanied by a powerful score and incredible acting.
The biggest struggle Riggan has with his play,“What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” is his co-star, Mike Shiner. After the lead actor gets injured on set, Shiner is called to fill in before audience previews. Shiner, portrayed by Edward Norton, known for Fight Club and American History X. He is an outgoing actor who acts as if he is just being himself on stage, but he is self-absorbed and shallow off it. Shiner struggles to find his way as a human being and how to become the best he can be. Lesley, played by Naomi Watts who is known for The Impossible, Shiner’s significant other, is fulfilling her childhood dream of playing on Broadway. Her stress over her first Broadway role, coupled with Shiner playing her stage love interest, is a recipe for disaster.
Another actor who pulls off a great role, is none other than Zach Galifianakis. As Riggan’s manager and best friend, Brandon Vander Hey, he helps him through his toughest moments and does his best to make everything right. Amy Ryan, who was in Gone Baby Gone, plays Riggan’s ex-wife. She only has brief screen time, but through her presence, we witness Riggan at his lowest and highest points.
In the end, every actor in this movie does a huge amount work to pull of such a phenomenal production and the director, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, made a fantastic film. Birdman is a rollercoaster that shows us that we must hit rock bottom to rise back up, and it is one of the best movies you will see all year.

The film revolves around Riggan Thomson (played by an excellent Michael Keaton), a washed up actor who decides to direct, write, and star in his own Broadway adaptation of Raymond Carver's short story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love". All of Riggan's struggles with his personal life and his ego manifests itself in the days leading up to the play. The film is very self aware and it definitely challenges audiences with its concepts. Those concepts, mind you, are open to interpretation. There's some irony that it won Best Picture and not in a good way. I was actually hoping it wouldn't win because it kind of takes the bite out of the satire. Expand

The concept of the movie is absolutely fantastic and it is certainly a film about art and artists, a classical literal theme transferred to the screen with such masterful skill that you can't help but admire the art.

It is a brilliantly devised black comedy, full of sardonic humor but also a very specific viewpoint that allows the viewer to look into the mind of an artist, in this case both the actor and the director, as the border between the movie and reality, between what is actually the plot of the movie and what is the artistic idea of Iñárritu, is very fluid, sometimes even non-existent. Iñárritu actually utilizes a theatrical method, a characteristic of modern theatre, thereby destroying the classical border between several aspects - the film itself, the viewers, the director, the plot and the idea. It is a metaesthetical analysis of the visual arts and Iñárritu realized it masterfully.

The acting is also a very strong aspect of the movie. All of the actors fulfill their roles brilliantly, but you cannot escape from the magical interpretations of Edward Norton and Michael Keaton. Norton, one of my favourite actors, is absolutely amazing, is a cynic and a bohemian, a master of the theatre enjoying the praise of a master actor, of a true artist positioned above the more popular yet artistically weaker Michael Keaton, whose Riggan Thomson is trying to revitalize his career and find true artistic meaning through the theatre, an institution so familiar to Norton's brilliant Mike Shiner. It is an absolute shame that Norton found himself alongside the brilliant J.K. Simmons this year (a sure victor at the Oscars), because he undoubtedly delivered an Oscar-winning performance. The same goes for Michael Keaton, who, in addition to that, certainly delivered the role of his career. His Golden Globe-winning performance is an absolute hit, in every way adapted to the idea Iñárritu envisioned with this film and certainly an internal battle for Keaton himself, who had to wait up until now to deliver such a dramatically and artistically strong role. Riggan Thomson is a psychologically polarized actor, an ex-star realized through shallow superhero roles, looking to prove to the world and to himself that he is wroth something, that he is actually an actor. His internal struggle, his obsession and his self-devouring psyche - all of them brilliantly portrayed by the excellent Keaton who managed to give us a look into a very specific mental construction (I thought to myself - now I finally know what went through Heath Ledger's mind before his tragic death).

Iñárritu has also presented us with a very specific aesthetic in 'Birdman', a very gentle approach to the technical and visual realization of the film combined with a series of surreal elements that wonderfully add up to the concept itself, thereby creating a magnificent blend only a few selected directors can create.

To conclude, 'Birdman' is truly a wonderful movie with a very specific set of exceptional strengths that are masterfully combined with a strong crew and a powerful idea. It is a surrealist retelling of a psychological process often foreign to the common viewer, but nonetheless amazing and wonderful.

So glad it won Best Picture. I would've been disappointed if Boyhood won, sure it was extremely ambitious ambitious filmmaking, but I feel that overshadowed the fact that the movie was kind of bland and about nothing. Birdman, however, was a equally ambitious filmmaking and a great story and characters to boot. Keaton deserved the Oscar for best actor. He gave the best performance of last year, and if J.K. Simmons wasn't so fantastic in Whiplash, Norton would be putting a golden man in his bathroom too. See this film if you haven't, it's one of the most original films of the past decade. Expand

Riggan: I'm nothing. I'm not even here.

The story to Birdman is about an wash up actor (Michael Keaton) - famous for portraying an iconic superhero - as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.

Okay in my review of Whiplash I bought this movie up mid way through the review just to give a heads up of when I'm going to watch it, because Birdman was my most hyped film of 2014. But just like every time I really wanted to see a film so baldy I have to wait for a while until I finally get a chance to watch it, story of my life really. But anywhere I was really looking forward to this movie ever since September, and now finally seeing the film I can safely say that Birdman is one of the best movie of 2014.

I always know that Micheal Keaton was the kind of movie star that will pick any random movie role just because... well he what's to be important and still show to everyone that he still got it, I guess?. Like early last year now he was in two movies that were pretty blah, and that was The Robocop remake and the film Need for Speed, and those films just made Keaton look like he was just cashing it in just for the sake of it. Until when I watched this movie and seeing Micheal Keaton's performance and thinking to myself "Wait is Keaton giving probably his best performance I've ever seen in my life? I think he is", because Keaton in this movie pretty much pulls of the best performance I've seen him in his all career. His character in this movie is like a wash up actor who had everything like love from the critics, his fans. Yeah he still dose have that Keaton thing that he always dose in his previous movies, but the scenes where he plays his character (Which is himself if you really look at his character in this movie) but anywhere he still gives a strong and believable performance that at times give me flashbacks of the good old days where he still had roots and felt like he isn't just cashing it in. I hear a lot of Oscar buzz about his performance in this movie, and I wouldn't be surprise if he wins because he totally deserves it. Excellent work Keaton.

Edward Norton is this movie pretty much plays a familiar character to himself has the hard to work with actor that at times doesn't follow the lines that he was given or even the direction he was told. We already know that Norton is a fantastic actor in his previous work, but in this movie his performance could be descried has stellar and insanely good.

Emma Stone is this movie and of course like most of the actors I named of so far of who outstanding they were in this movie and well you can already guess what I'm going to say next. Emma Stone acting in this movie was just terrific and marvellous to watch in this movie and it's good to see a real break out performance from her more than the lay back ones in her other movies. Nice one Emma. The other cast in the movie like Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis both did good as well.

The movie is shot to look like it's all one shot take and my mind was just blown away by that fact. There where screens were I said to myself "Oh my god is it one shot?", well I can already imagine the stress, hard work and how many takes they had to do to get it, and boy did it pay off nicely, because I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I dared myself to look away from the beautiful cinematography and the impressive editing used in the film.

The movie has a brilliant message about film critics today that doesn't feel like it's in your face message that you normally get in movies. There is a scene in this movie and it's not a spoiler by the way, but I really need to get this out the way first. So anywhere Micheal Keaton character just starts having a rant over this theater critic who is going to give a bad review to his play when she hasn't even seen it or seen any of the premieres. He talks about how she only users big words that nobody will say in person and shes to lazy to come up what she really thinks about it so she users big words just to fill in the sentence. This movie probably has the best rant in movie history and Keaton in that scene shows how good of a actor that he is.

For problems in the movie... I really don't have any to be honest.

I loved this movie and yes I'm coming out be saying that. This isn't just the best movie of the year and such, no this is just flawless film making right here. Birdman and Whiplash are the two films I will highly recommend to people because those two films are my favorite films of 2014.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The forgotten hollywood top star who played superhero 'Birdman', Riggan tomson want to bring back his shiny days for challenging broadway show. He never acheived recognition from public, so gap between ideal and reality makes riggan exhausted. Riggan feels big pressure from rebooting classic play, and the famous and loved actor, Edward norton's unexpecting behavior, also prestigious critic, Tabitha dickinson's poor prereview. Through this bleack condition, how birdman could fly over sky again.
this movie has four outstanding features. First, using long take shot for pretending play show, because of the background of this movie, story of the play actor attracts watchers eyes. Next, the magical realistic, birdman shows his magical power in the real world, but people don't have resistance between magical and realistic. The smooth magical realistic technique creates film more fantastic atmosphere. The show business satire, also a feature of the birdman film, spoil broadway and hollywood's dark side which create value only from SNS marketing but artistic factor. Michael Keaton's remarkable acting makes this movie more popular too. His life just looks like as riggan tomson, drag inner inspiration out.

I don't wanna' be that guy right now - but we all know that ratings are what matters and so they vote for the younger, fresher, hip guy, But, that's not my point, so back to the movie. As you put the disc in and sit down, you hear his inner dialogue and see Riggan floating in the air. Wait? Is that what kind of movie this is gonna' be? No way I thought - AH! yes, it's an illusion, it's what he's thinking. His mind plays tricks on him - because he was Birdman and he was superior, "we grossed billions!" Each scene is stronger than the one before and keeps hitting you in the face until you realize that this film is what the real world is like. This film captures human emotion and desire so insanely perfectly that I couldn't stop watching it. The black comedy-ness similar to movies like Wolf of Wall Street or Big Lebowski - that kind of humor that is raw and, again, hits you in the face and makes you think "what the **** Yeah, well that's Birdman. This is a classic film and portrays the world of theater very realistically. The movie really strengthens after Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) makes his entrance and in his first scene he pulls the guts out of Riggan, throws them on the floor and says 'this is acting, that right there is realism.' He doesn't actually say that, but you get the point. They're naturally adversaries, but Shiner brings a reality to Riggan's play that he needed to succeed, because after all - that's what Riggan wants right? Success...even though he was Birdman and "grossed billions" he still feels like he has more to prove. Maybe it's that he is a real actor - he can do Broadway, write and star in his own adaptation! Each characters performances were stellar, garnering 3 oscar nominations from the ensemble cast. Hell, even Galifianakis kills it in this film (he always kills it, though). I look forward to any other film from this director and writing group. Birdman, 10/10, watch it. And watch it again, if you can, because you'll catch things more and more as you go. For example - in the mirror at the beginning of the film is a note that reads "a thing is just a thing, not what is said of that thing." I saw that on my 3rd go through, and it's stuck to my brain. It's some kind of simplistic philosophy that this movie conveys and that quote kinda' packs it all into one sentence for ya.' Enjoy! Expand

Now, he is directing and starring in a new original play that he wrote himself, and we watch as it all crumbles around him in one long seamless, continuous shot throughout the entire movie. This gives the movie a somewhat jazzy, unpredictable feel which is complimented by it's jazzy score that is mostly drum-only. It isn't actually just one shot, but it's made to look that way through clever editing tricks, such as cutting during whip-pans and dark, black areas. A lot of scenes however are actually one take, sometimes even one take during multiple scenes, and i REALLY have to praise the actors for managing these long takes. The film also touches so much on existence, purpose, the desire to be loved and praised, duality, as well as the virtue of the ignorance of our irrelevance. There is also a scene that talks about filmgoers who don't care about art and only care about action and explosions. Most people nowadays ignore the artistic aspects of movies or books or music, and instead only like mindless entertainment or whatever is popular and relevant. However instead of delivering it in an insulting way, it's shown in a way that really makes you think. Why should we care about what other people are entertained by? But at the same time, it's maddening when filmgoers are dissapointed and stomp on high-art films like this that are a lot more thought-provoking and more emotionally impactful than the sci-fi explosion-fest they were expecting. The film also touches on the problems that many film critics have. The protagonist, Riggan, explodes on a film critic after reading her review, addressing how all she does is put hurtful, meaningless labels on other peoples works, using big words as a substitute for being proffessional. It is great that we can express how we feel about things, but do we really have to be so hurtful and negative?

Birdman is a high art movie that has lots of thought-provoking messages that will leave you with lots to think about after you've watched it, and it is part of why this movie has such a greater impact on you than your average movie, as well as part of why it's so memorable. The biggest reasons to both these things is that there isn't really any other film out there that is similar to this one. There is also lots of metaphorical imagery that can really brings thoughts into you, without any expositional dialogue but just plain brilliant filmmaking and writing. Compelling, hilarious, emotional, complex, well acted, well written, well shot, well edited, not a single flaw that i have with Birdman. Of course, Birdman is a masterpiece and gets a 10/10.

Not the least of its charms is the brilliant trickery that presents it as if it were all one continuous shot from beginning to end - that is outrageous! There is a feeling of constant motion and pressure, with some confusion about to break out. Or something else - almost anything else - gritty dialogue, weird actors' humor, moments of sadness and struggle, soaring special effects. It is loony, but it all works and flows together. The performances are excellent - I never much liked Keaton until I saw this, Norton is perfect as an egomaniac star, Zach G. effectively turns it down a notch in a different sort of role for him. Inarittu is a genius - bravo! Expand

The music is a cluttering drum crescendo accompanied by an even more cluttering organ sound wave. It is a monolithic, epic scene. And suddenly... nothing. It shuts down in an instant. Then we are greeted with a Michael Keaton standing in the lotus position, hovering over the ground in the room. He is filmed from the back. There is no sound except a guttural voice reflecting on his bad choices. We learn that this man is Riggan Thomson. A now retired superhero blockbusters film star attempting to recapture himself by adapting Raymond Carver's short story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" on Broadway.

There is a reason I described the first scene of the film. Great films create a rhythm from the start. They never break, not even a little bit. In that aspect, from the very first scene, 'Birdman' keeps the momentum all the way to the end. No other film has such an endearing pace, a slippery flow and an absolute visual and technical control over time. There are barely any cuts in 'Birdman'. The film is saturated with art through its technical achievements. The end of a scene is marked with the camera slowly panning away to a corner and moving to another room. But it not only changes the location. It also changes the time. Iñárritu is an undoubted king of polish. He easily stretches time, magically fading between realism and surrealism.

Speaking of which, 'Birdman' offers many moments of subtle visual cues. Whenever Thomson is filmed alone, his demented mind is visually released into reality. He moves objects from a distance and the voice always speaks to him. But this is not only epic and dramatic; somehow its also funny. His superhero persona, Birdman, is an artless construct. He screams at Thomson to get back in his costume. "This is what people want, not this talkative depressive bullsh*t". The everlasting conflict between art and superficial commercialism is ever-present in this film. Criticism is finally given a voice and a visual confrontation with art. She is Tabitha Dickinson (Lindsay Duncan), a theater critic. She is unforgiving, conservative and merciless at Thomson's efforts to "attempt real art".

This theme of relevance for Thomson and the meaning and value of art continues as Iñárritu rolller-coasts us through the deformed minds of Thomson and his acting peers. The one which really stands out the most is Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) who gives a stunning performance as the antagonistic compulsive obsessed actor. He breaks down during a scene because Thomson refused to allow him to drink real gin. He is angry at the fake set. He does not care about anything, always sacrificing everything for the sake of art: "Come on people, don't be so pathetic!" he screams at the revolted audience. "Stop looking at the world through your cellphones [...] have a real experience!" The only touch of normality seems to be Thomson's ex-wife, Sylvia (Amy Ryan) and his producer Jake (Zach Galifianakis).

In the end, 'Birdman' is a unique film. One ambitious and funny but also focused on the nature and purpose of professional criticism, relevance, regret, family, friendship, mental illness even. But what elevates this to masterpiece status is the absolute weaving and artful editing, the encapsulating pace, the insanely genius crafted surrealism and the spot-on comic relief moments of ridiculousness. But then again, who cares what any of us say? "A thing is a thing not what is said of that thing."

In addition to the challenges of the show and confrontations with his family, he's in constant conflict with the shadow of the superhero that made him a star. As expected, Keaton is outstanding, but the rest of the cast turns in rich and nuanced performances (Emma Stone is a revelation). What makes this film so brilliant is director Alejandro González Iñárritu's inspired vision. It's shot as one continuous take, which is not only a tech challenge, but creates a sense of fluid time and continuous stress. A slightly surreal, constantly compelling and richly realized combination of personal drama and theatrical send-up. Expand

"Birdman" is satire of the film industry, celebrity life, and all the insanity that goes with it. With stunning performances all around, excellent writing, big laughs, and stunning direction this is a must see.

The biggest area where it succeeds though is that it speaks to everyone. We all want to feel loved and important. Special even. That force inside of us that drive us to achieve that feeling is the driving force behind this film. It's also the force that drove all of this film's characters to edge and said "it's up to you from here. Make the jump or fall and die." It's an emotional complex and intelligent film.

The way it talks about movie goers attention spans and what succeeds at the box office is sure to step on some toes. Yes, big blockbuster action movies do get more attention than more thoughtful dramas like, but what's the big deal? We pay for entertainment so shouldn't we get that rather than being bored out of our minds while some filmmaker preaches at us for two hours? While some of it's messages seem a little pretentious the film is unbelievably aware of this and even calls itself out on it. Regardless of how you feel regarding writer and director Alejandro González Iñárritu's views you can't say the film won't get you thinking.

What about what he has to say in regards to reviews? The labels we put on people's work. It certainly points out how hurtful and meaningless the reviews of both professional and us wannabe reviewers can be to the people behind what is being reviewed. It is our right to tell how we feel about a piece of entertainment, but do we have to be so darn cruel about it? Especially to those with a different view than our own?

This fim brings up plenty of interesting topics that you will dwell on for quite a long time if you have any interest in movies outside of shear entertainment factor. However all of that intelligence Birdman shows ultimately results to nothing if the movie isn't enjoyable to watch. Luckily the movie succeeds. With captivating performances all around, particularly from Keaton and Norton, and absolutely hilarious moments this is one that will keep comedy fans rolling on the floor with laughter. You also really begin to care about these characters and their plots as the film progresses. Before it's over you are emotionally invested.

Did I mention the soundtrack? Jazz has never been better utilized as far as I'm concerned. The special effects are awesome. They add a sense of craziness and unpredictability to the film. You never know when Keaton's powers are going to show up and put a whole new spin on things. They are used to excellently capture the character's insanity.

Birdman succeeds in just about every category. You may be able to predict a certain plot element that takes place near the end (you know exactly how Keaton's character is going to end his play before the big reveal), but for the most part it's an unpredictable ride. One with hilarity and originality all around. Simply put, this is one you should highly consider seeing.

I give "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" a 9.3/10.

With a dazzling 360-degree choreography that follows around the characters throughout all events that happen, "Birdman" offers a compelling, witty story around a washed up superhero actor who invests everything into his self-produced broadway play as he fights his inner and outer demons that torment and mock him and strives to prove his true worth as a artist. Michael Keaton undoubtedly deserved his oscar; he was the excellent choice for the lead role Riggan Thomoson, as his honest down-to-earth performances truly was, in some sense, a mirror image of himself back when he struggled as an actor after his hit film "Batman". The film's technical merits are without exception. Most predominant is
that the whole movie feels like one long sequence shot, from about
minute 2 until nearly the end. There are disguised cuts, and the movie
finds moments to settle down the camera to contrast the movement. But
the orchestration of actors, the re-framing of the camera, and the
support of crew outside the frame, are nothing short of phenomenal.

The film's artistic merits are easy to see in the performances, design
and composition, but harder to puzzle out emotionally/intellectually.
They rely partly on multiple ambiguities, and the audience will need to
do some broad-view thinking about life and art to really crack open the
movie. For all of this, I would not say that the merits are so rarified
that they should push away anyone who wants to see a challenging movie.
They are hard to crack, but not because you really have to understand
all the references.

This year’s Birdman, made by fellow Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, seeks to one-up the long takes of Gravity by seemingly having one continuous shot.

It isn’t a single take but that in no way diminishes the superb camera work. Instead of cutting between characters the camera glides to them, taking on a life of its own at times. The disembodied camera floating down hall ways and stairs feels both surreal and exhilarating when paired with the upbeat jazz score. The behind the scenes of a theatre production have never been more thrilling. Birdman is a bold technical exercise and instead of the B-movie that Gravity was under the surface, Birdman has soul.

Michael Keaton plays Riggan, a washed up ex-Hollywood Superhero who is attempting to restart his career by staging and staring in a Broadway play. However, Riggan hasn’t left the past behind and the Birdman character that made him famous still plagues his thoughts. He is a man divided, in Freudian terms his psyche is split. Part of him longs for the glory days of Birdman while part of him wants to prove critics wrong, showing them he is more than just a celebrity.

The internal turmoil of his life mirrors the external chaos of his stage play. In an act of fate, a falling camera takes out the sole incompetent actor working for him who is replaced by the talented and egotistical Mike Shiner (Edward Norton on top form). At first Mike appears to be a god-send but quickly becomes another obstacle for Riggan. Besides stealing the spotlight in the play, Mike also develops an interest for Riggan’s daughter (Emma Stone) who is fresh out of rehab and has clear daddy-issues. One of the female leads in the play claims to be pregnant with Riggan’s child. Stuffed to the brim with dramatic tensions, Birdman is reminiscent of the high-speed comedy dramas of Howard Hawks.

Birdman is the first of two mainstream Hollywood satires this year, the second being David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (who also wrote the screenplay) fires shot after shot at the self-obsessed culture of Hollywood. This culture which at least in myth was one confined to the California hills, has now transcended Tinsletown with the dawn of the internet. Now with Facebook and Twitter everyone is just a video post away from fame and, as Edward Norton reminds us after his massive on-stage erection goes viral; there is no such thing as bad press.

If there is a criticism of Birdman, it’s how ambitious the film is. Alejandro seemingly throws all his ideas at us and the film moves at such a brisk pace that they all can’t be absorbed in a single viewing. A more restrained approach, focusing on fewer topics but in more detail instead of attempting to take on all of celebrity culture in 119 minutes may have better served the film. However, despite the chaos, the film still works, thanks in no small part to the outstanding performances in the leading and supporting roles.

In a world where most movie these days are generic and formulaic, Birdman is a refreshing and exciting concept. An exhilarating and inventive movie that has one licking one's lips in eager anticipation as to what will happen next.
Most of the film takes part in and around a theatre on Broadway. Here, the actors are getting ready to open a new play which is meant to resurrect the career of Riggans (Michael Keaton). After success as a superhero called Birdman, both audiences and critics have been unable to take him seriously in any other roles. He sees this as his big chance to prove them all wrong. For Keaton, it could be said, life is imitating art. However, here he has never been better. Dispensing with his usual repertoire of tics and mannerisms he is a revelation giving possibly the year's tour de force performance. This is deserved Oscar calibre stuff. Sentiment doesn't come in to it.
He is surrounded by an intriguingly eclectic bunch of top class actors who add a fantastic dynamic to the overall picture. Edward Norton and Emma Stone shine the brightest and both have knockout scenes, but Andrea Riseborough, Naomi Watts, Amy Ryan and Zach Galfianikis are all equally exciting.
Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu demonstrates a firm and confident hold on the material and pulls of an amazingly innovative feat by making most of the film look as if it has been shot in one continuous take. The reality is that visual effects have been at work. Never the less the result is sensational and left me awestruck at the sheer bravado on display.
The two hour running time flies past and whilst enjoying the brilliance of the actors and the maturity of great writing and technique, one is also able to applaud the wonderful cinematography, effective sound and the inspiredl, but perfectly fitting score.
It's also refreshing to have a superhero movie that is most definitely about something other than explosions, noise and special effects. This is a true original. The type of film that the cinema was made for.

The satire is rampant though dismissive, the irony is subtle, the double identity dilemma is plain fantastic. There's wide use of some Lynch-esque magic, paired with brutal reality, and a great performance by Michael Keaton. Edward Norton is hilarious as the hyperbolic Hollywood superstar, and Emma Stone's fierce acting is spot-on.

There are few missteps in Birdman, and they're forgotten quite soon. A limping drumset sets the score to the best comedy of the past year.

A film shot in such an unconvientional way mixed with great performances by Keaton and Norton demands to be seen. Birdman shines a light on celebraties and their status and how important it is to be remembered. A

Moreover, the scene by Michael Keaton, where he fights with Zach Galifianakis ,the imitation is commendable hats off,u need to be the best actor in this academies.

I kind of was bored at the beginning but as soon as it kicked into gear I was instantly in love. This is such an emotional roller-coaster of sort with superb acting. movies that get me to question life are the kind of movies I love and support. And again the acting was just superb. This is what is meant when you hear acting. Raw, perfect and emotional performances. This movie is art! Plus the twist at the end! I kinda saw it coming but I was still in suspense as to whether it was actually gonna happen or not! And the very last scene! Awesome movie! A must watch especially for those involved in theater and who see acting as art rather than mere fun. Expand

Very weird and very funny. Some strong performances from Emma Stone and Edward Norton elevate this clever film even more. Perfect casting choice regarding Michael Keaton (the irony was not lost on any of us).

Birdman is a movie about a play while the movie is done like a theater piece. Sound confusing? Think "mashup" where two different things are put together to create something new while retaining elements of both. I can understand why some viewers wouldn't "get it".

I loved it. I also love live theater and movies so I got the best of both worlds. The acting is excellent. Keaton, of course, but also Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis and the rest of the ensemble are clearly cut characters.

Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the fantasy.

About what ?? well the story is simple. a washed up actor trying to come back with a Broadway play. However , it's ambiguous and you've (me too) watch it more than once to dig more and more of its precisely-packed layers. Is it about art versus commerciality?? Is it about the stress and urgency of life ?? for me, it's about what we do here in our lives and what the point is and the seeking of happiness and being loved.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu is great here creating magical realism with different new tone. It's sad and funny at the same moment , a fantasy that tells the very truth.
The actors are all great especially Keaton whose background as batman adds to the background of birdman and the movie uses that very well leading to a heartfelt performance.
The technical aspects are great especially the cinematography which is another character. The movie is shot into a seemingly continuous one shot creating a marvelous experience. The camera flows through and around characters , corridors of the theater and the street creating a sense of being trapped into this this life. It left me dazzled and exhausted.

Masterful execution of the one-shot technique, brilliant and definitely one of the best screenplays of this year, great performances, one of the funniest films of the year, and time only flies while watching it. It flies so damn fast, that the movie feel much too short. Behind the masterful overall execution of the film and the main story, there is a somehow tragic story about an actor, who doesn't find his place on the world and starts to wonder, if he really matters on this world. A film that shows the true side of the entertainment business as well as it shows the "bad" side of being an actor. Not typical performances from Keaton, Norton and Galifianakis, but they fit in very well. A weird, genius, and awesome film. Expand

The film managed to surprise and impress me several times. Going in, I had no idea it used one take for the majority of the film. However, it worked and looked so well. The cinematography and sharp dialogue were only a couple of things that made this film so great. The main highlight was easily the acting. Every single actor in the film does a superb job! Michael Keaton, without a doubt, deserves an Oscar for this one! Edward Norton also deserves a best supporting actor nod for his performance. The other supporting actors that included the likes of Emma Stone, Zach Galifianakis, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, and Naomi Watts also did amazing. Overall, it's easily one of the best films I've seen all year! Expand
