A film shot by Inarritu with the obvious aim of a technical achievement and concern for prize.

There is a fine point that hits you in his other films, but you can't explain it with words, it doesn't go through in the movie, it stays in you after the movie ends, you have such a sincere feeling inside you. However, all the messages are pur in the words by the characters, too obviusly. They as well seem so numb and shallow characters, as if in a glass cage, so distant.

Praise yes, ok, fine. Yet there is no cinematic masterpiece here that deserves such "exaggerated" praise, because there is nothing "unique" with this movie.

It would be unfair to criticize the film on technical aspects, but it should not be exaggerated either. And for those who want to see the most praised one shot" or "long take" masterpiece, here are your masterpieces Aleksandr Sokurov: Russki Kovcheg - Russian Ark (2012), or one of the later examples, Victoria (2015), directed by Sebastian Schipper.

I must say that I adored the cast. They, in my opinion, worked well together. Keaton deservedly received the Oscar for this performance. It was quite astonishing how many parts he can portray.

Especially that it is a cinematography-miracle, Inaritu really outdid himself, just like as Keaton, Stone or Norton (Gosh..). I am going to give it a stable 8; not less or more, but it is definitely one of the best in 2014, that I had to watch in only 2022. But now I know, why it beat Whiplash 8 years ago. RATE : 8.5 Expand

Despite the near-universal acclaim from critics, 'Birdman' very much divided audiences to a quite extreme degree. This division is very much understandable, 'Birdman' has a great many merits but not everything will work for everybody.

To me 'Birdman' was an excellent film. Maybe not quite as good as the hype suggests, but nowhere near deserving of the many 1/10 votes when its merits are a great many that some people seem to have not acknowledged. Although, from personal opinion, a little over-hyped, 'Birdman' ('Gone Girl', 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' and 'Whiplash' were also personal favourites, and 'Boyhood' was also better than given credit for considering the amount of hate it's garnered) was a 2014 highlight and a worthy Best Picture winner.

Not everything in 'Birdman' works. Some of the pace is a touch frenetic in parts of the second half and not everything feels quite as tied up as ought with things left a little loose.

However, 'Birdman' is an exceptionally well made film, with some of the best and cleverest cinematography of the year, some of the cinematography and editing is so dazzling it's enough to take the breath away. The special effects are also tremendous. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (in the first of his deserved director wins, the best being 2015's 'The Revenant), 'Birdman' is one of the best directed films of 2014 too and shows Iñárritu's immense talent as a director, with breath-taking vision, sense of mood and the ability to make the story as gripping as possible.

The script is fun, thought-provoking and at times touchingly profound. The story mostly, while sometimes thin, is gripping and the characters engage.

Michael Keaton gives his best performance in years, an outstanding performance and perhaps a career-best. Edward Norton is similarly superb, his performance also ranking among his best. Emma Stones charms and delights too.

Overall, very much divisive, with some people adoring or admiring it and others hating it, personally was one of the people who loved it while acknowledging its imperfections. 9/10 Bethany Cox

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a fairly mundane film for the most part, primarily centering in on one selfish mans vanity. Not exactly exciting stuff but there is definitely some dry, black humour present and the basic story appealed to me on one level, before having seen it, I admit. I've seen one or two other films essentially about 'washed up actors' trying to make the 'big time' again. This one, I'd say, is pretty middle-of-the-road material. Riggan Thomson comes across as quite morose, quick witted and self deprecating. His frustration for the position he finds himself in, how the film and general entertainment industry has moved on since his presumed 'heyday', is clearly put across and I imagine some people could relate to his predicament, although certainly not everyone.

In one scene, he's in a room with his daughter, where she doesn't shy away from painting a realistic picture of the situation he's in, making it clear that he's stuck in the past, not having a presence on social media sites and other modern forms of communication for one thing. Riggan is quite brusque and not especially subtle but he says what he think and some of the situations that are depicted are wryly amusing, although I honestly wouldn't call this anything near a laugh-a-minute comedy. To my mind, this is much more a mix of a drama and a black comedy, although there is also one or two elements of fantasy also present. Some of the comedy comes from the dialogue, with Riggan saying things that I suppose you wouldn't expect to be said in a matter-of-fact way - he isn't afraid to say things how he sees it, so I suppose you could say he's a fairly typical brusque American.

I felt there was a bit of a claustrophobic feel to this film, what with the instrumentation playing in the background, plus Riggans mind talking out loud in a narrator type way/role and the regular, sometimes slightly jerkly as already mentioned, camerawork. It feels a bit sad to say that perhaps this film could be seen to be re-assuring, in as much as it shows that even those who had fame at a young-ish age can go through mid-life crises, can struggle to stay on top and all the rest of it.

Some of the situations were semi-ludicrous, such as one scene where Riggan finds himself running out in to Times Square wearing only his underwear. I don't much like ridiculing other people but it did make me laugh - at this point I suppose it was hard to not feel a little sorry for him, as things were clearly getting the better of him and as a viewer I felt (unsurprisingly) intrigued to find out what would happen next.

I felt that Michael Keaton did well in his portrayal of Riggan - his frustration and anger and his despair being very emotively expressed, his performance seemed very realistic to me. Other cast members include Emma Stone, who plays Riggan's feisty independent daughter, Sam, who seems to be more aware of things than he is and Zach Galifiankis, who plays Jake, Riggans colleague and co-financier. Other cast members who aren't in main roles include Naomi Watts, and Edward Norton.

I suppose one of the potential messages (or should that be theme?) that this film conveys is the clear ability to feel lonely even in what should be, what is such a large and popular city. This could be felt as quite depressing or, once again I'll use that term, re-assuring, perhaps - I guess it depends on your point of view? I'll leave that up to you to decide. I also think that the term, or label, delusion also very much applies, with some scenes depicting fairly fantastical things happening, such as Riggans old 'Birdman' character appearing behind him. I suppose there is the irony in that Michael Keaton plays the role of Riggan, considering he played Batman in the early 1990s and Riggan found fame behind the portrayal of 'Birdman', in films about another comic strip superhero.

Content wise, there is a lot of pretty strong language present, which should be hardly surprising and there is some moderate violence depicted, although mostly while the characters are acting themselves. There are a few sex references but otherwise there isn't much really likely to offend or upset people, I wouldn't have thought anyway. That is unless claustrophobic films really put you off perhaps.

As I said previously, this film won't appeal to everyone and for me it was very much an average, middle-of-the-road type film. I found myself laughing a little at some of the dialogue (there being some witty dialogue present) and the portrayal of Riggan is done well by Michael Keaton but its not exactly a marvellous film. This is the sort of film that I'd say is probably worth a watch when it comes on TV but I wouldn't go out of your way to pay to rent or buy it as such.

Not interesting, boring action, annoying music all over the movie and no plot, no logical and rational sequence of action.
Don't waste your time watching this movie, it's not worth it. Critics praised and overrated this movie cause of Hollywood's interests and corruption.
Think and compare this poor movie which won "Best Picture" award with "The Dark Knight", which didn't won best film in 2008, it wasn't even nominated and added to the short list of contenders. But was praised later by critics, most of them saying that maybe was "some of the best films in history of cinematography". Think of that, and that shows the corrupt environment of Hollywood, which give awards to people who satisfy their interests, just like in politics. Hollywood is a business place, not an artist worth industry, as it was maybe in other old days.

Sure there are movies that are technically worse, but a big consideration for me is how overrated a movie is. If a movie wins best picture at the Academy Awards it better be damn good. Alas, this movie is not only not damn good, but it is horrendously bad. It's hard to justify even calling this a movie. It's basically a collection of random events which are somehow collectively meant to be some sort of profound statement. It is very frustrating to be lied to about a movie being good. Why the dishonesty from the critics? I think they must be bribed or just give positive reviews because they don't want studios and stars complaining to their bosses? I don't get it. Rex Reed's review says everything you need to know about this movie, and if you want the truth, I suggest you read it. Expand

Across the board the performances are superb, the cinematography is great and it's certainly a pretty original premise. For me the movie doesn't quite add up to the some of its parts however as, while it makes for an intriguing and darkly humorous watch at times, some scenes do drag on a little too long without really adding anything to the plot and my attention did start to wander on more than one occasion.

In the end I wouldn't rate Birdman amongst my favourite movies but it's certainly worth a watch if you are looking for a movie that does something a bit different.

I had to stop severalWhat a bummer! I had high expectations for this movie after reading the positive reviews, and found instead a film that bored me to death, without a single character I could relate to, in spite of the very good cast. I had to stop several times to check the running length, "are we there yet?" and was happy when it was finally over.
Am I a fan of action movies a la XXX or Rambo, dissing a higher form of art? No. There's an old movie about a similar subject, "In The Bleak Midwinter", and I absolutely loved it. So what's the difference? In the old movie, theater was the meeting point of several misfit characters, each with his or her own problems, and the story was about healing, finding oneself, facing one's fears and making the right choice. It was a nice, naive tale of innocence, to be accepted for what it is and not as a super-accurate representation of the real world.
Enter Birdman: here an aging blockbuster actor attempts his luck at theater. Everything is bombastic and in your face, from his violent outbursts against furniture and vases (using imaginary superpowers) to the excessive characterization of the star actor by Edward Norton, to the trick of introducing a drum-based soundtrack, and then showing actual drummers beating hard. Even an actress I love, Naomi Watts, who delivers as usual, can do little to save this setup.
I think it may be the difference between American and British values: the only measure of art and self-realization here is success, fame, the number of followers on twitter, who gets the front page on the newspaper. The smaller, introspective, more measured performance by Kenneth Branagh's team, for me wins the day by a long shot.

It's also a great film in terms of quality performances and quick and sharp writing. Michael Keaton and Edward Norton boss every scene they're in and deservedly got a lot of hype for the oscars. Emma Stone also portrays her character brilliantly but I actually think Naomi Watts is the total scene-stealer in this movie and should have also got praise. The camerawork in this film is immersive and the story hooks you from the first minute. The writing really balances out the dark comedic aspects of the film well and make the viewers develop strong feeling for the characters. While a few moments in the film felt unnecessary and made me bored and I have to say I don't know what the hell the ending was about, Birdman is a very solid film and a superb best picture winner. I'm glad the protagonist has figured out a way to deal with the nose at the end. Adding insult to injury, It's safe to say that Iñárritu went too far with this surrealist denouement. Plus, the film is really overlong. Actually, I think the entire last thirty minutes should have been dealt with the same way Riggan has dealt with his nose. Besides, there must be a boring scene every now and then that is also somewhat pointless. I believe this is a result of the overstuffed nature of the plot. I don't reckon there's anything worse than a pretentious plot with a lackluster execution. I'm really sad that such a callow filmmaker has won the Oscar for making such a lackluster drama!

Well this movie was boring, too artsy in a Andre Butzer vs Salvador Dali way. The way you think don't i understand this kind of art or do those critics suffer from some kind of groups dynamic. The camera wasn't groundbreaking at all its just some old technique used again. Its like someone building bricks out of stone with a chisel (cool but not really chain breaking in whats possible). Its like the Band Kraftwerk has made their music with age old instruments still nice music but nothing to talk about nothing game changin, like James Cameron did with state of the art techniques in Titanic. The music one of the most important parts in makin a good movie was a complete fail here. You cannnot take one annoying drum solo and put it on every scene. No Tarantino movie had been good at all if he had taken a f**in drum solo and put it on every scene. Music is a mood enhancer and not some artsy instrument to tell the world hey listen to that drum solo this movie really is artsy.
All in all the movie has done almost everything wrong that could have been done wrong.

While there are a couple of parts where characters explain their feelings, Birdman is mostly a very good exploration of fame and the loss of it in the most bizarre way possible.

The music is a cluttering drum crescendo accompanied by an even more cluttering organ sound wave. It is a monolithic, epic scene. And suddenly... nothing. It shuts down in an instant. Then we are greeted with a Michael Keaton standing in the lotus position, hovering over the ground in the room. He is filmed from the back. There is no sound except a guttural voice reflecting on his bad choices. We learn that this man is Riggan Thomson. A now retired superhero blockbusters film star attempting to recapture himself by adapting Raymond Carver's short story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" on Broadway.

There is a reason I described the first scene of the film. Great films create a rhythm from the start. They never break, not even a little bit. In that aspect, from the very first scene, 'Birdman' keeps the momentum all the way to the end. No other film has such an endearing pace, a slippery flow and an absolute visual and technical control over time. There are barely any cuts in 'Birdman'. The film is saturated with art through its technical achievements. The end of a scene is marked with the camera slowly panning away to a corner and moving to another room. But it not only changes the location. It also changes the time. Iñárritu is an undoubted king of polish. He easily stretches time, magically fading between realism and surrealism.

Speaking of which, 'Birdman' offers many moments of subtle visual cues. Whenever Thomson is filmed alone, his demented mind is visually released into reality. He moves objects from a distance and the voice always speaks to him. But this is not only epic and dramatic; somehow its also funny. His superhero persona, Birdman, is an artless construct. He screams at Thomson to get back in his costume. "This is what people want, not this talkative depressive bullsh*t". The everlasting conflict between art and superficial commercialism is ever-present in this film. Criticism is finally given a voice and a visual confrontation with art. She is Tabitha Dickinson (Lindsay Duncan), a theater critic. She is unforgiving, conservative and merciless at Thomson's efforts to "attempt real art".

This theme of relevance for Thomson and the meaning and value of art continues as Iñárritu rolller-coasts us through the deformed minds of Thomson and his acting peers. The one which really stands out the most is Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) who gives a stunning performance as the antagonistic compulsive obsessed actor. He breaks down during a scene because Thomson refused to allow him to drink real gin. He is angry at the fake set. He does not care about anything, always sacrificing everything for the sake of art: "Come on people, don't be so pathetic!" he screams at the revolted audience. "Stop looking at the world through your cellphones [...] have a real experience!" The only touch of normality seems to be Thomson's ex-wife, Sylvia (Amy Ryan) and his producer Jake (Zach Galifianakis).

In the end, 'Birdman' is a unique film. One ambitious and funny but also focused on the nature and purpose of professional criticism, relevance, regret, family, friendship, mental illness even. But what elevates this to masterpiece status is the absolute weaving and artful editing, the encapsulating pace, the insanely genius crafted surrealism and the spot-on comic relief moments of ridiculousness. But then again, who cares what any of us say? "A thing is a thing not what is said of that thing."

Not the least of its charms is the brilliant trickery that presents it as if it were all one continuous shot from beginning to end - that is outrageous! There is a feeling of constant motion and pressure, with some confusion about to break out. Or something else - almost anything else - gritty dialogue, weird actors' humor, moments of sadness and struggle, soaring special effects. It is loony, but it all works and flows together. The performances are excellent - I never much liked Keaton until I saw this, Norton is perfect as an egomaniac star, Zach G. effectively turns it down a notch in a different sort of role for him. Inarittu is a genius - bravo! Expand

One of the most overrated movies by far. The script is solid, the acting is fairly good throughout, but the plot as whole has me scratching my head the whole time, asking the question, "Why am I watching this?"

It delivers on all the themes its going after, and uses a technique that I admire for the effort put into it. But I just can't get passed how rotten with pretentiousness this entire film is. There's no redeemable character, and there is no heart or soul in this film. We have an empty shell of a man, surrounded by equally hollow people, all trying to desperately to grasp at the meaning of their own existence with very little payoff, and resolution that is completely predictable as it is ludicrous. From the perspective of someone that works in entertainment, I get it. But for everyone else--for all the good 'ol fashioned families out there, I couldn't get past this thought: "Who the **** cares?"

This is the ultimate Hollywood-sucking-its-own movie I have ever seen, and it really wasn't that entertaining to watch. There are so many other stories that are so much more important to watch, and so much better out there. I get it--this flick is going after to depicting the themes of melancholy (which is like "The Ultimate" theme in art to attempt to depict)--but screw this movie.

I regret watching it, to be perfectly frank.

Now, he is directing and starring in a new original play that he wrote himself, and we watch as it all crumbles around him in one long seamless, continuous shot throughout the entire movie. This gives the movie a somewhat jazzy, unpredictable feel which is complimented by it's jazzy score that is mostly drum-only. It isn't actually just one shot, but it's made to look that way through clever editing tricks, such as cutting during whip-pans and dark, black areas. A lot of scenes however are actually one take, sometimes even one take during multiple scenes, and i REALLY have to praise the actors for managing these long takes. The film also touches so much on existence, purpose, the desire to be loved and praised, duality, as well as the virtue of the ignorance of our irrelevance. There is also a scene that talks about filmgoers who don't care about art and only care about action and explosions. Most people nowadays ignore the artistic aspects of movies or books or music, and instead only like mindless entertainment or whatever is popular and relevant. However instead of delivering it in an insulting way, it's shown in a way that really makes you think. Why should we care about what other people are entertained by? But at the same time, it's maddening when filmgoers are dissapointed and stomp on high-art films like this that are a lot more thought-provoking and more emotionally impactful than the sci-fi explosion-fest they were expecting. The film also touches on the problems that many film critics have. The protagonist, Riggan, explodes on a film critic after reading her review, addressing how all she does is put hurtful, meaningless labels on other peoples works, using big words as a substitute for being proffessional. It is great that we can express how we feel about things, but do we really have to be so hurtful and negative?

Birdman is a high art movie that has lots of thought-provoking messages that will leave you with lots to think about after you've watched it, and it is part of why this movie has such a greater impact on you than your average movie, as well as part of why it's so memorable. The biggest reasons to both these things is that there isn't really any other film out there that is similar to this one. There is also lots of metaphorical imagery that can really brings thoughts into you, without any expositional dialogue but just plain brilliant filmmaking and writing. Compelling, hilarious, emotional, complex, well acted, well written, well shot, well edited, not a single flaw that i have with Birdman. Of course, Birdman is a masterpiece and gets a 10/10.

The reason a film with such a simple story gripped me so much was so many numerous reasons, for example; the cinematography in this film is truly spectacular and the lack of camera cuts creates such powerful immersion, as well as the convincing performances, especially Michael Keaton and Edward Norton who seemed unrecognisable in their full-bodied characters. A reason why you can truly feel the desire in Riggan’s head to be noticed again, to rebuild his career as well as himself as a person. Some people call this film pretentious, but the message is clear, for example, he is so attached to his previous life as a movie star, as the birdman, that it has claimed him for real. The flying sequence is the idea in his head of what he desires for the future, to once again soar through the clouds above everyone else, to again experience the best part of his life. However, I believe he found more happiness in the play than whatever he had before, due to the rebuilt relationship with his daughter and finally finding himself as a person. This film was spectacular and gets from me a 9/10 – 90% Expand

With a dazzling 360-degree choreography that follows around the characters throughout all events that happen, "Birdman" offers a compelling, witty story around a washed up superhero actor who invests everything into his self-produced broadway play as he fights his inner and outer demons that torment and mock him and strives to prove his true worth as a artist. Michael Keaton undoubtedly deserved his oscar; he was the excellent choice for the lead role Riggan Thomoson, as his honest down-to-earth performances truly was, in some sense, a mirror image of himself back when he struggled as an actor after his hit film "Batman". Overall, "Birdman" is a great film packed with excellent acting and writing, a must watch for the moviegoers. Expand

I don't wanna' be that guy right now - but we all know that ratings are what matters and so they vote for the younger, fresher, hip guy, But, that's not my point, so back to the movie. As you put the disc in and sit down, you hear his inner dialogue and see Riggan floating in the air. Wait? Is that what kind of movie this is gonna' be? No way I thought - AH! yes, it's an illusion, it's what he's thinking. His mind plays tricks on him - because he was Birdman and he was superior, "we grossed billions!" Each scene is stronger than the one before and keeps hitting you in the face until you realize that this film is what the real world is like. This film captures human emotion and desire so insanely perfectly that I couldn't stop watching it. The black comedy-ness similar to movies like Wolf of Wall Street or Big Lebowski - that kind of humor that is raw and, again, hits you in the face and makes you think "what the **** Yeah, well that's Birdman. This is a classic film and portrays the world of theater very realistically. The movie really strengthens after Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) makes his entrance and in his first scene he pulls the guts out of Riggan, throws them on the floor and says 'this is acting, that right there is realism.' He doesn't actually say that, but you get the point. They're naturally adversaries, but Shiner brings a reality to Riggan's play that he needed to succeed, because after all - that's what Riggan wants right? Success...even though he was Birdman and "grossed billions" he still feels like he has more to prove. Maybe it's that he is a real actor - he can do Broadway, write and star in his own adaptation! Each characters performances were stellar, garnering 3 oscar nominations from the ensemble cast. Hell, even Galifianakis kills it in this film (he always kills it, though). I look forward to any other film from this director and writing group. Birdman, 10/10, watch it. And watch it again, if you can, because you'll catch things more and more as you go. For example - in the mirror at the beginning of the film is a note that reads "a thing is just a thing, not what is said of that thing." I saw that on my 3rd go through, and it's stuck to my brain. It's some kind of simplistic philosophy that this movie conveys and that quote kinda' packs it all into one sentence for ya.' Enjoy! Expand

An extremely pretentious film. There are stupid showy monologues accompanied by the most annoying score I have ever heard. Some might say it is an artistic masterpiece, but I say it is a manic mess, especially for a best picture movie.

Alejandro González Iñárritu's work on "Birdman" is an extraordinary ride for those who like art films, and for those who are in the mood to watch an unusual movie.

Basics:
"BIrdman" is one of those movies that is called a "Black Comedy", the atmosphere of the movie is dark and and sometimes funny. Michael Keaton is the star of the movie trying to overcome his past of being a former superhero star on broad way, with supporting actors and actresses like Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, and Zach Galifianakis. The supporting cast makes the movie better in almost every possible way.

Plot:
Michael Keaton plays as Riggan Thompson, a former superhero star who played BIrdman on broad way in his earlier years. Riggan tries to bond with his daughter Sam (played by Emma Stone), and bring an upcoming play with other starts (played by Naomi Watts and Edward Norton) to go to the top as he worries about being criticized. Riggan struggles with the cast and crew who criticizes his performance each time he goes on stage and rehearses with the actors, he must try to overcome is way of going back as he used to be.

While Birdman may not be a movie for everyone, it is still one of those movies that is unusual a majority of the way through. Michael Keaton's work on the film earned him a best actor nomination at the Oscars, this is easily one of his best performances. Birdman's cinematography is absolutely amazing, the picture of the movie is comfortable to watch and makes it easier to watch. The screenplay written by Iñárritu is professionally written as the actors have tremendous performances.

"Birdman" is a work of art in Hollywood filming; that being said, this is not a film everyone will like. This film is mainly for people who love watching art movies, this is also one of those films that you have to be in the mood to watch. Good movie overall, not recommended for everyone though.

Piercing shots into an actor’s life, his mind altering roused imagination with the surges of the action, the flooding insights need a new pair of eyes to get a little learning in the dangerous thing. Michael Keaton finally gets his acting ravage in the as mad as a wrongly shot hog role, and devices it into a howling and rattling ex-cogitation roux of as mad as a hatter one man show. After the movie, if your thought pauses on Amazing, there buddy, you get a penny for it. Expand

"Birdman" is satire of the film industry, celebrity life, and all the insanity that goes with it. With stunning performances all around, excellent writing, big laughs, and stunning direction this is a must see.

The biggest area where it succeeds though is that it speaks to everyone. We all want to feel loved and important. Special even. That force inside of us that drive us to achieve that feeling is the driving force behind this film. It's also the force that drove all of this film's characters to edge and said "it's up to you from here. Make the jump or fall and die." It's an emotional complex and intelligent film.

The way it talks about movie goers attention spans and what succeeds at the box office is sure to step on some toes. Yes, big blockbuster action movies do get more attention than more thoughtful dramas like, but what's the big deal? We pay for entertainment so shouldn't we get that rather than being bored out of our minds while some filmmaker preaches at us for two hours? While some of it's messages seem a little pretentious the film is unbelievably aware of this and even calls itself out on it. Regardless of how you feel regarding writer and director Alejandro González Iñárritu's views you can't say the film won't get you thinking.

What about what he has to say in regards to reviews? The labels we put on people's work. It certainly points out how hurtful and meaningless the reviews of both professional and us wannabe reviewers can be to the people behind what is being reviewed. It is our right to tell how we feel about a piece of entertainment, but do we have to be so darn cruel about it? Especially to those with a different view than our own?

This fim brings up plenty of interesting topics that you will dwell on for quite a long time if you have any interest in movies outside of shear entertainment factor. However all of that intelligence Birdman shows ultimately results to nothing if the movie isn't enjoyable to watch. Luckily the movie succeeds. With captivating performances all around, particularly from Keaton and Norton, and absolutely hilarious moments this is one that will keep comedy fans rolling on the floor with laughter. You also really begin to care about these characters and their plots as the film progresses. Before it's over you are emotionally invested.

Did I mention the soundtrack? Jazz has never been better utilized as far as I'm concerned. The special effects are awesome. They add a sense of craziness and unpredictability to the film. You never know when Keaton's powers are going to show up and put a whole new spin on things. They are used to excellently capture the character's insanity.

Birdman succeeds in just about every category. You may be able to predict a certain plot element that takes place near the end (you know exactly how Keaton's character is going to end his play before the big reveal), but for the most part it's an unpredictable ride. One with hilarity and originality all around. Simply put, this is one you should highly consider seeing.

I give "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" a 9.3/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The forgotten hollywood top star who played superhero 'Birdman', Riggan tomson want to bring back his shiny days for challenging broadway show. He never acheived recognition from public, so gap between ideal and reality makes riggan exhausted. Riggan feels big pressure from rebooting classic play, and the famous and loved actor, Edward norton's unexpecting behavior, also prestigious critic, Tabitha dickinson's poor prereview. Through this bleack condition, how birdman could fly over sky again.
this movie has four outstanding features. First, using long take shot for pretending play show, because of the background of this movie, story of the play actor attracts watchers eyes. Next, the magical realistic, birdman shows his magical power in the real world, but people don't have resistance between magical and realistic. The smooth magical realistic technique creates film more fantastic atmosphere. The show business satire, also a feature of the birdman film, spoil broadway and hollywood's dark side which create value only from SNS marketing but artistic factor. Michael Keaton's remarkable acting makes this movie more popular too. His life just looks like as riggan tomson, drag inner inspiration out.

The cast is filled withThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences must have a soft spot for films that are about their own industry, for how else do you explain that Birdman snatched up the highest honors at the Oscars this year? The cast is filled with veteran actors whose reputation precedes them—Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Andrea Riseborough, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts and Zach Galifianakis are the featured players, and they are all well-known stars. Keaton plays an actor whose heyday is long over. It has been over twenty years since he was famous for being a comic book character named Birdman. Now determined to make a comeback as a serious actor, Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) has written, produced and is starring in his own Broadway play, based on a short story by Raymond Carver, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.”

Broadway is the dream destination for many a serious actor, but director/writer Alejandro Inarritu sees the seedy side of the glamour. The backstage fitting rooms are cluttered, dark, and depressing. Actors are all psychologically damaged. They are obsessed with sexuality; they are angry and frustrated; and they have broken families and broken lives. Riggan himself is functional but psychotic—he thinks he has superpowers, he has auditory hallucinations where he hears the voice of Birdman, his old character, who is constantly berating him. And most dangerously, he thinks he can fly.

As the show’s producer, Riggan is depending on his male lead, Mike Shiner (Edward Norton), to attract large audiences. Shiner is famous but he is an alcoholic who believes that his devotion to his art has elevated him to a priesthood that makes him an untouchable demigod. When Shiner gets drunk on stage in previews and disrupts the show so that the curtain has to come down on a shocked audience, he merely excuses himself with the arrogant belief that previews are not that important. Riggan’s daughter Samantha (Emma Stone) works for her father as his assistant, a job she hates, but she is fresh out of rehab and is lucky to be employed. She is disheveled, lost, and spiritually battered as is every member of the play’s cast.

The theatricality of the stage is a different kind of acting from film acting. One has to exaggerate one’s gestures, project one’s voice, and pretend that you are unaware of the hundreds of people sitting in the audience. We see Keaton and company practicing their craft on stage, but when they leave the stage, they are unable to leave behind the theatricality. We have actors playing actors, who then must be actors playing actors who are acting in a play; then they exit the stage and go back to actors playing actors. There are fifty shades of subtlety involved, and they can’t identify all the hues. They simply keep acting like they are on a stage the whole time. It makes for an eccentric artificiality, which starts to become tedious by the end of the film.

Theater critics do not fare well in this film. The most powerful critic in New York City admits to Riggan that she is going to close down the play with a scathing review, even though the play hasn’t opened yet, and she has not seen a single preview. She is described by Riggan and Shiner as a woman who looks like she just licked the derriere of a homeless person, an imbecile insult that boggles the mind.

In general, magical realism is an interesting genre, but when the “magic” part is actually a manifestation of symptoms of mental illness, it’s not that interesting.
