Chilling and creepy, Bird Box is a surprisingly effective horror-thriller. However, it is undermined by thin plot development.

It may not be the most original feature, nor does the solution suggest any improvement in the world future, but we are talking about an individualistic project, right? When Malorie calms down, the film calms down too, and sees no need to move on. The direction turns a global catastrophe into an intimate event, an impulse for the sad woman to overcome her trauma, to reconcile with the maternal instinct and find happiness. Maybe a few billion human beings will be sacrificed along the way, but you can't make lemonade without squeezing a few lemons, right? For the final smile of Sandra Bullock and the sense of peace explored by the framing and the sound, the martyrdom was worth it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the second Netflix movie where the final scene erases everything that the movie has built up to with illogical garbage that concludes nothing and contributes nothing to the overall story. The first one was "The End" which ended in the main character and his SO in a car covered in a cloud of dust before the credits roll. In Bird Box the sanctuary from the monsters turns out to be a school for the blind. Now what is a school for the blind doing tucked away in the middle of a forest and how does Rick give such an accurate description of how to get there down the river, when he is blind? Where are they getting their food from? What makes their place any safer than the original house Malorie and the kids were holed up in? What happened to all the other blind people in the cities - there should be thousands of them still alive. Why is it even called Bird Box??? The box of birds is in barely half a dozen shots in the entire movie. Urgh. The more I think about this inconclusive and dumb ending the more enraged I become over the fact that I spent two hours watching it.

To sum up "Bird Box" is what happens when The Walking Dead meets Oregon Trail.

A lot of aspects of the plot are changed, and made ridiculous, or cheap, and the good performance from Sandra Bullock doesn't prove itself enough to carry the film through its missteps. The second half is especially changed drastically, and made more "dramatic" rather than intriguing (I mean, screaming "Don't take my children!" in the middle of the woods wouldn't have been a solution in the book.. just saying...). It's an enjoyable movie, and the cast carries out what is asked of them, however, lacking originality and faithfulness to the book, and not transcending the horror genre formula, "Bird Box" just isn't what I was hoping it would be. People are calling it a rip-off of A Quiet Place, but really this is just a horrendous imitation of Frank Darabont's film adaption of Stephen King's The Mist. (And so many other things) Nothing is subtle in this film, everything is repeatedly smashed into your face and requires little thought from the audience. The acting is so annoying and was trying so hard to give an emotional weight to the story, that it just fails as a result.

The art of filmmaking has become the art of an extended full-length filler television episode, nowadays. Bird Box is just showing that by refusing to challenge its audience and as a result showcases its ability to just settle into generic mediocrity.

It was a huge waste of time.. not even worth watching. Its like a jersey shore survivor.. but not as entertaining. The best way i can describe this movie is like this.. normally you take a satisfying crap on the toilet, flush it, and youre done.. and you feel good. Here, youre forced to crap in a bag.. they tell you to hold onto the bag, telling you something amazing will happen if you do.. like george r r martin.. the pizza is coming. You sit there the whole time with a smelly festering turd bag.. then finally its over and they wheel a garbage can around and tell u its ok to throw the bag out. "Wasnt that amazing?" No, it wasnt.. the most annoying thing is watching a buncha fools trying to survive using hollywood sjw logic to get thru serious situations, which always ends bad for them, but every opportunity they can, they do it again.. the definition of insanity. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Take the worst aspects of: The walking dead, The Happening and A Quiet Place. Then you have Bird Box. What a terrible, terrible movie.
Sandra Bullock portrays a really unpleasant character, very difficult to root for. The beginning of the movie, where everything goes crazy, is ok, but too similar to the happening. But in The Happening, at least we had some kind of explanation, as lame as it turned out. In Bird Box, the writers just don't bother. It's implied this is some kind of demons, whatever.
In the end of course, nothing is resolved, because that would take creativity. I kinda hate this kind of movie where the world goes to an end, and we follow a tiny bunch of characters until they get to safe place. It seems like a happy ending, if you forgot that the world is still crazy out there. Anyway... Dialogues are boring and endless, just like in the walking dead. And characters act stupidly, just like in A quiet place. By the way, this is a rather long movie (>2h). I would recommend not to waste your time on this one. Really not worth it.

I didn't know anything about the movie or heard anything about it prior to watching it. I had a couple hours free and noticed that sandra bullock was featured in the decent trailer so I decided to give it a watch. This film is a good and hearty thriller, it does draw a lot of parallels with other films of the same genre but has enough character to make it original. The film manages to create an incredible sense of unease and unpredicatbility that is key to the success of a thriller, so much so that I felt exhausted when it was over. The acting was good with some characters and character plots similar to the walking dead (back when that show was good). The story jumps about a lot to different times and locations which is quite annoying at the start when you just want the film to progress. Quite surprising though was he themes explored in the film and was actually quite successful in conveying emotion. The story does follow a typical apocalypse narrative so you find yourself thinking to yourself "when are these people going to argue about having to go out and get supplies" and sure enough they do. Some charcters are just there to make you feel sorry for them and their innocence, which makes it obvious they are going to get killed off. Sarah Paulson featured quite briefly in the film but I thought she could have offered more to the film. John Malkovic was ok, I think he is well rehearsed on playing a short tempered, problematic character. Sandra Bullock's performance was ok, she delivered lines in her usual tone but has something about her that makes her acting quite enjoyable to watch.

Overall, I think this movie will be enjoyable for those who enjoy thrillers and for those who just happen to stumble upon it themselves without being influenced by the recent viral spread of this movie with people running about with blinfolds on, I mean the promotion of this ovie was so awkward I half expected Joan Crawford to come running in swinning a fake axe.

These are not people who care about the art of cinema, but middle-to-upper class modern, trendy millennials and/or people who have a fetish of playing a streaming service in the background while having sexual intercourse because, for some reason, that is cool--"Netflix and chill" anyone?

So, in comes "Birdbox" directed by Susanne Bier. This follows the perfect recipe for satisfying the mass. It is a shallow, easy-to-follow post-apocalyptic survival flick but with a twist so that after watching it, the entitled pretentious viewers can again pat themselves on the back and think they are knowledgeable about the art just because they enjoyed a film so laughingly trying to be deep, that the evil entities are not even shown. Ever! "Wow! What an abstract avant-garde piece of revolutionary art"--tweets Carol, from her iPhone, feeling pretty good about herself. But in truth, this is nothing more than Jackass (except not funny).

There is no insight into anything. Those presences causing everyone suicide are never revealed to us, nor they are mentioned. This would be fine, if the film would actually do something with this mystery. Instead, it tells us that it is so in-depth, so complex, so multi-layered that dude, like, we won't even show them, but wait not even mention them, and you know the two kids in the film? They have no name--they are simply called "boy" and "girl". "This is something else"--says Carol; "This is a shameless cash-grab"--I say while struggling to shake-off the modernist cringe.

Every single one of these characters is as shallow as he or she can be and every single interaction is linear and boring; not to even mention the predictability of the whole thing. For its entire run-time, I was waiting for each character to inevitably die. This film is about as complex as a classic zombie-horror flick, except there they actually put the effort into the zombies, while here they do nothing and just put some lazy pretentious mumbo-jumbo.

In the end, what makes this a revolting film (if I could even call it that) is the fact that I do not think this shallowness is unintentional. Netflix is all about business, and here they completely killed the art form and, like the creatures in the film, replaced it with a populous void. Profitable, but disgusting.

The film is not without its effective set pieces and suspenseful moments, but sustaining that suspense with the building threat of seeing two children commit suicide just makes the entire film seem cheap and exploitative. Rather than embrace the tawdry 'B-movie' shocks bubbling beneath the surface, the director and cast instead insist on treating the material like they're in a prestige pic while never finding the emotional heart, psychological depth, or cultural significance of its central premise. Because of this jarring disconnect between tone and material, the film fails to work as a literary art film or as a genre thriller. Ignore the anonymous voices online telling you you have to see this movie to understand the phenomenon. I recommend taking the advice of the movie itself and keeping your blindfold on. Expand

You know that bias where even if a product like Insatiable,Bright or...well,Bird Box fails miserably at being a piece of media, everyone just straight loves it for no reason other than “you critics are just mean”? Because, after the 30 minute mark of explaining the concept,Bird Box did just what Jurassic World 2 did to my inner film fanatic soul. It p****d the hell outta me,this time more than JW...And this isn’t a franchise movie, not even a Universal movie at that. This is made by Netflix, whose social media I hate with a burning passion, and rarely makes a great movie (think Okja or Roma),because they’re so busy making teen garbage (with exceptions like Stranger Things and the Marvel TV Shows) that, while they appeal to that demographic successfully, they’ll always miss two things that make a movie or TV Show good, not so good or bad. “Entertainment” and “an interesting PLOT”.
And Bird Box doesn’t have that. It’s a soulless cash-in on A Quiet Place that fails at being what they’re aiming for or,even worse, lacks anything worth of its “Genre”. This is listed as a Horror movie and man,oh man, does it not show anything worth of the Horror. Not even the kills are fantastic. This movie is so bad,It’ll instantly kill your brain cells because they were busy doing something else.
But let’s start at the beginning.
The acting is probably the biggest highlight of the movie. Surprises are here and there, since I only knew Sandra bullock was in it. Well, surprise surprise,John Malkovich,Rosa Salazar and Trevante Rhodes also appear in here and they’re all pretty good! Especially Malkovich and Bullock, who are trying to make us care about everything coming from a stupid script.
A script full of dumb choices, situations being finished in no time (even faster than The LEGO Movie,a great movie with a fast story),a presentation that fails with a snap of the fingers, and 2 moments where Venom now feels like a fantastic script (The quote “Wow. Such Venom…”,the car flipping at the 11 minute mark and the eyes being weird when they’re “infected” by this monster). Speaking of the monster...Uhh...Where’s the monster? Do I have to believe about this floating fart who infects people in killing themselves? Yeah, that’s actually dumb for a script that wants to be taken super seriously.
Oh,and there are kids in here, and they’re even worse than Claire from a bad but miles better movie than this (Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom). Worse in the sense that they don’t even act. They’re standing there like pieces of wood,or even rocks.
The technical aspect is also really bad. The cinematography feels like a great YouTube video and rarely does it feel like a cinematic presentation. The score feels like a great mix of nothingness, horrible synthy vibes and a track that a composer like Junkie XL would cry from disappointment. And to finish everything, the editing is Justice League level bad, where even the little things fail at connecting the dots (where in JL i was the gun thing,in Bird Box it’s a person in a bedroom looking at another person, then we cut to the same person, only her head is looking to the closed window).
GOOD GRAVY GOD,this movie made me angry. Bird Box made me hate Netflix as a studio more than Universal just because of how the platform’s users act IN IT. I don’t care if you love Bright,it’s just an aggressive 4/10. I don’t care about Insatiable,it’s a dumb show with nothing special that makes the Catwoman movie look like The Dark Knight. Stop raving about Bird Box,you dumb TNTs. It’s a great Asylum rip-off (or cash-in) of A Quiet Place that has nothing special and is just there to please some guy who wants their brain to be rotten. But yeah, dislike this review, because your opinion will be better than mine for all the wrong reasons. I hope you have a future filled to the brim with classics such as Fifty Shades,Twilight,Bird Box etc. and “Have a nice life” (-Venom)

There are so many obvious similarities in this film especially to "The Happening" from 2008 as well as "A Quiet Place" from earlier this year. When it does try to be it's own thing at times, it comes off so contrived and cliche and I personally couldn't take it seriously. There are so many tropes and moments that are so familiar and unoriginal. The story is told in a somewhat interesting way and Bullock's acting is serviceable like always but it just lacks an overall originality which has become a trend in most Netflix original films unfortunately aside from a few. I felt as though they tried to make this more of a testament/symbolism to being a mother than anything else and maybe that's why it's scoring so well among the average Netflix demographic. There are moments of set up atmosphere and intensity that never lead to anywhere where I guess you're supposed to use your imagination which I find pointless when watching something that is meant to show the culprits before your eyes in the thriller/horror genres. The suspense is empty when it's meant to be full. Overall this is just a long dragging attempt at being a clever thriller drama that doesn't deliver any originality but is watchable I suppose. If you want quality original horror on Netflix, watch The Ritual or The Apostle. Expand

Good use of the color blue on sandra bullock. the birds in the box and the human characters. a bit weird at certain points of the movie when malorie acted a bit out of her character by standing up for others when she was not good at making human connections.

Unfortunately, I saw the trailers and that has ruined some of the movie for me. The second half was also not as good as the first half. I particularly didnt enjoy last 15mins, with the characters just wandering off into different directions. The ending reminded me of the babadook which babadook did a much better job. I was also very puzzled as to how 2 of the characters were not given proper names at the beginning...

It is a huge hit that even leads to various memes and dangerous attempts to emulate the characters in the film. Folks....driving a car while being blindfolded is not recommended in any situation. Beside the fact, I found this film equal in quality to its 'twin': The Quiet Place. While the latter received heaps of praise, both films share a similar premise and equally thrilling experience. Both are not genre changing, Oscar breaking flicks or took you into a deeper sense of dread, such as the excellent Hereditary. In this case, well suited to be watched while eating your popcorn at home. Expand

Both movies have a unique twist on sensory depravation. In A Quiet Place, that was sound—any noise would get you killed, as it showed so brutally in the first fifteen minutes of the movie. In Bird Box, it’s sight.
The story of Bird Box is narrated in two parts: the now and five years ago, when the outbreak first occurs. The film maintains a solid pace at the beginning, but it drags on as it reaches its two-hour mark.
It is clear that filmmaker Susanne Bier, director of The Night Manager, wanted Malorie to have a sort of saviour arc, going from being a pregnant and uncertain as to whether or not she’ll love her child, to being a mother to her child and another’s, realising her love for them as she’s saving them from the presence. This, however, is not handled as well as it could’ve been because of how the film is written; it tries to straddle the line between sci-fi horror and emotional, psychological drama/thriller, and falls poorly in the middle, choosing neither camp and suffering for it. Furthermore, there is no emotional connection to these characters, and watching the story of the past was pointless in terms of actually connecting with the characters as we knew they were going to die anyway. Finally, what would be the nail in the coffin (box?), would be that the characters are one-note and fail to be anything more than tropes of the genre.
However, because of its cast and cinematography, Bird Box is an entertaining-enough watch, albeit with a fair number of flaws and, if you’ve found yourself with nothing to do over the weekend, you might as well give it a go.

Ending is cliche AF, as is most of the movie and especially the cast. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is basically about leftistist that discover that Trump got elected (maybe reelected?). You need to see the results to believe them, it's not enough to hear about it. But once you see them - you kill yourself, literally, because you simply cannot live in a world were Trump is the president. So, what do the leftists do? They hide in their homes. And when they need to go out, they cover their eyes with blindfolds. Their enemies are usual leftist enemies - rednecks and other residents of southern states, by their looks and accents. Oh, and there's also 50 years old Sandra Bullock dreaming about making it out with a black guy 20 years younger. And two stupid kids that ought to grow up in a world that is immensely dangerous, but acting as your regular kids that went out on a field trip with their mommy.
So refreshing to see such trash of a movie, I must say.

And that is Bullocks' captivating performance, and the general concept of the film (although heavily borrowed from The Happening). Everything else was a let down. The story contains no set theme, and juggles genres from scene to scene. Moments of comic relief are generally poorly timed, and diminishes the momentum of the film. The characters are forgettable and two-dimensional, there is not depth to their ambitions. Every death that occurs does not cause an impact, since there is no time to develop any sort of relationship with them. The anxiety could have been paced with slower transitions, quieter beats and overall more reliance on the emotion of the world created by Bier. Moments where the music could let the picture breathe are entirely overlooked, causing a jarring mashup of intensities that pull you out of the experience. Sandra Bullock, on the other hand, saved the film. Her performance was captivating and emotional, which lent the film brief moments of genuine awe. Bird Box could be a breath of fresh air in the horror realm, as "A Quiet Place" and "Hereditary" were. However, the lazy development of characters and even lazier story-telling coupled with dubious acting (NOT from Sandra Bullock) shoot it down mercilessly. Expand

It's basically a psychological drama in horror film's clothing. The tension/creepiness factor are high for most of the movie as its timeline switches back and forth between present and past. We learn that Malorie (Bullock) is/was pregnant, but she is noticeably unexcited by motherhood. We gradually learn that her upbringing has made her a rather cold, distant person who has trouble connecting with others. This sets the stage for what's to come, and what comes is lots of tension stemming from both the mysterious entities and the people forced to ride out the events together.

The tension felt as Malorie and the boy and girl travel down the river gradually increases as they near their destination because we know that their destination matters. I had a strong emotional reaction to the plight of the boy and girl. I must admit that I started sobbing near the end... but I won't spoil it by saying why :-).

Some people have complained that the film doesn't explain the origin of the mysterious entities which are the catalysts of the events, but I think their origin is beside the point (though, a possible explanation is alluded to by one character early on). To me, this is a movie about a woman learning to make the personal connections she had been unable to. The entities are not the point, *she* is the point. If you want horror à la Insidious (which was great!), this isn't for you. If you enjoy mystery for the sake of a broader, emotional point, this is definitely worth watching.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just don't look! The idea that you can only pass an adventure with blindfolds, I still find original! Any unknown force, lets people drive mad. So they commit suicide. No one knows where it comes from and how to fight it. Pregnant Sandra Bullock can barricade herself into a house with a few other, few survivors. Interpersonal drama then plays out and you can't trust anyone anymore. For sure, it's a bit reminiscent of M. Night Shyamalan's work The Happening. The unknown force is not declared in great detail either. It's just there. The story is rather exciting, like the typical meeting of different people and how they have to come to terms. The only antidote is: Just don't look! Add to that the unique trip in a small boat with children who have all attracted the blindfolds. This is pure excitement and horror! I mean, how are we going to behave? The actors are heavily selected. Especially Bullock's counterpart part John Malkovich. Malkovich already has a tremendous screen presence.
The effects are simple and only targeted. Director Susanne Bier prefers to keep the focus on her performers rather than the strained disasters. Unfortunately, the conclusion remains open: You don't know how to contain the power. Are Bullock and the other survivors the only ones who had adopted the Blindekuh method? Why can the force affect people, even through the computer screen, but not through an open fireplace? Conclusion: An exciting and captivating story that has more interpersonal dimensions than on effects

I read the book of bird box and I liked it very much and I've finished about a week or something.
I was hoping to hear that this film was filmed later and then heard that it was filmed.Sandra bullockda starring me more but even for that time I thought Sandra Bullock was a little big in this role.
When I watched the film, I saw it change a bit as usual. The movie takes 2 hours and it's hard to fit a big book in 2 hours. So in my opinion if I actually had a series rather than making movies I think it would be more like and really cool.Had a very long and immersive story for the film.In fact, a universe like TWD does more people in the world.or if it would be 3 series, but this would be risky in terms of viewing.
I did not love the film because I read the book but someone not reading the book maybe like this film.I don't find it bad again but it wasn't very good. So they could transfer this perfect scenario to the longer-term audience, and we would be in this universe for longer.
If we go to acting, the majority is good, I just want to say.
Trevante Rhodes didn't like the acting of among them was the most amateur
Sandra Bullock was old for this role

The entire movie is good but it doesnt have and END. They should have explained what was that "thing" that make people suicide. I was going to review it with 9 stars but the lack of an end made me grade it 7, just because it was a terrible mistake.

It was an interesting Idea that carried the movie along, especially the flashbacks. Although it takes some time to understand it ties the whole movie together in a pleasing way which I haven't seen in a lot of films.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Take off your blindfolds for this review: The memes have run wild with images from this new Netflix thriller. Sandra Bullock is our hero and begins the movie blindfolded, leading 2 small children, also blindfolded, out into the woods and down into a hidden canoe to forge the river. Her demands are clear “..under no circumstance are you allowed to take off your blindfold. If I find that you have, I will hurt you.”, and she is not kidding. We jump back 5 years and learn how this land of blindfolds comes to be. Sandra, Malorie, is a bit of a loner artist, who is pregnant and going to a doctor’s appointment with her sister, Jessica, played by Sarah Paulson. Everything is fine until people everywhere begin committing suicide, for no apparent reason. Jessica is driving Malorie home when she too becomes overtaken with whatever this force is, her face turns to sadness, and crashes the car. When that doesn’t do that trick, she jumps in front of a moving garbage truck. Something terrible must be in the air. If you see “it” you will commit suicide. Jumping ahead again 5 years, the story continues through the lives of Malorie, her two children, and her significant other, Tom. It follows their struggles and their perseverance to survive in this new world. She also carries along with her two pet canaries that possess the ability to sense the dark presence. With a powerful M. Night Shayamalan composition, this movie makes you cling to the unknown. It surrounds the viewer with an overwhelming sense of anxiety like you are blindfolded yourself, leaving you gripping your seat for the next scene. How could this possibly end up, is there any hope? Who strives in an environment where sight is outlawed – the blind. However, there may also be outlaws that bring vision to the darkness. Best names for children: boy and girl – no gender equality here. Scariest non-villain: Douglas – played by the talented John Malkovich, but what a douche. Best outcome from this movie – Bird Box Challenges! Overall grade: A. No need to hide behind a blindfold here, this was entertaining Expand

"A Quiet Place" was fine it had some interesting ideas, but it was just green in one too many ways with so-so directing, decent-but-not-great acting and a corny end. Sure, this movie doesn't necessarily clean up as nicely as "A Quite Place" does by the time its over, but this one leaves just enough questions open that you're left wondering but not wanting. "Bird Box" is definitely one of the better films I've seen this year. Yes, the plot is fairly predictable, but the movie admits that right from the start and just concerns itself with presenting something gripping, which it does very well. Sandra Bullock and all of the other actors put their all into this, and it shows. I highly recommend this movie, particularly since its already on Netflix. Expand

I was disappointed when the movie ended and I wish it came out before "A Quiet Place" so people could stop comparing; I don't think it's anything "A Quiet Place", in my opinion, "A Quiet Place" wasn't even that good. I think the rating on this movie should be much higher but what matters is that the people loved it. KEEP IT UP NETFLIX! Expand

Started out on a bad note, but ended on a high one. Had some really scary moments, and was thrilling especially at the end. Hopefully, more Netflix movies are at east as good as this.

I really enjoyed the movie, as much as the acting and the idea behind the tale. I can see why the general score is ~5,5 as the film doesn't have a "visible" monster and and lack of explanation of it - it's just no generic hollywood flic. This movie has a good idea and I love its cast but it is just another cliche horror flick that raises more questions than answers and teases with no real pay off.

Sandra Bullock plays Malorie, a pregnant woman who is trying to survive the end of the world (because that hasn't been overdone yet).

The movie plays out in a way that you know who all isn't gonna make it because it jumps from past to present so the suspense of who dies is completely removed from the movie.

The "creature" or whatever it is is never shown or seen. I want to know what the characters are seeing that are making them commit suicide. What do crazy people see that makes them so happy? The movie never answers these questions it is all left to YOUR imagination.

The movie is a great idea and I would love to see it done again but with a less cliche plot and done in a more suspenseful way.

Unexpected surprise. A film full of intensity and suspense. Music, acting and the plot were top notch. A few silly decisions here and there but overall best thriller I have seen in 2018.

So now we finally know how Melania Trump feels. It's far from an original movie, but it is enjoyable. Basically we take bets on who will die, and in what order. The story is alright, the main character is unlikeable, but her sidekick who looks like a Terminator is nice.

This makes for a good watch to entertain. I give it a 7/10.

The characters as well as their development was so real and so phenomenal. Sandra Bullock was THE right actress for her role. Wouldn't have anyone else. Expand

It's well acted, and shot beautifully, the score by Trent Reznor is perfect. I only had few minor issues, the ending felt really flat to me, without spoiling it just did not pay off the way I felt it should have, it kind of faded away.. the other thing was the actress the played Olympia.. ok all the other actors were fantastic and maybe that was why she stuck out, but she was hands down the weakest actor / actress and it showed.. there was times when she fighting back a smile almost when she should be sad and delivered lines poorly. That said this movie is a really fun thriller / semi horror film that has a great feel to it. Expand
