-"Ol' Jack Always Says... What The Hell?"

Filled with cheesy one-liners, next-level campy spirit, bizarre and silly fighting sequences, oddball humor, and zany special effects. All these things made Big Trouble in Little China nothing but a funny guilty-pleasure, but I don't totally agree with that opinion.

Actually, I think this movie is a strong proof that John Carpenter was one of the best, and most versatile filmmakers who worked in the eighties. With all the mentioned-above delightful ingredients, Carpenter didn't neglect making a good movie in the first place.

It's really impressive to see Carpenter among all this sheer fun utilizing many cinema tropes, such as; Chekhov's Gun, and MacGuffin. Or to see him really care about the main character improvement. Just try to remember how Jack Burton became totally different at the end from what he was when we introduced to him for the first time. Needless to say, that Kurt Russell gave an incredibly charismatic performance.

The movie is not without its flaws nonetheless, for there are some issues I couldn't help but notice. First and foremost, the first act represented a lot of characters, and potential sub-plots that didn't pay off neither as the story progresses, nor at the end of the movie.
Secondly, I think Margo, a journalist played by Kate Burton, was completely useless, and seemed to exist only to fill up some places. Finally, there was a lot of exposition that we didn't even need. I mean what's the benefit of telling us the same information two or three times. If some characters don't know some information that doesn't mean that we need to witness all the main characters, one by one, get the same information over and over again! I found the romantic relationship between Jack Burton and Gracie Law a bit cringe-worthy at first, but then it turned out that this was intentional, and this very relationship even became very satisfying for me by the end of the movie.

This is the movie that invented the expression "A blast from start to finish."

The greatest collection of one liners, over-the-top schlock action, and Kurt Russel's bravado make this a tasty jam. You will laugh, you will cry from some of the greatest sentences ever uttered by a human being. You will also be amazed by how the film fools you with who the real hero of the movie is, and I'm not just talking Kim Cattrall. If you love schlock, if you love cheesy one liners, if you are a nerd (a true blue one not one of the wannabes), then this is the movie for you. Perfect for groups or if you're by yourself (cause you are a nerd), crack open a cold one (if you're of age), dig into that pizza and enjoy. Expand

It is a fine mixture of martial arts, comedy, action and fantasy elements with small portions of horror. It does also a fine job of subverting cliches and tropes often in latent ways for you to discover. Then there are the actors / characters. Lets start with the villains: David Lo Pan (James Hong) became so beloved / popular that he was used in other media even video games. His lieutenants the three storms, Thunder (Carter Wong), Rain (Peter Kwong) and Ligthning (James Pax) are still fan favourites. Lightning was the inspiration for the character Raiden from Mortal Combat. All of them are great villains, deliver an intense performance and strike fear in the hearts of their enemies. Then you have the heroes: There is Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) who is a truck driver that got dragged into the adventure by circumstance. He does a fine performances as main character that got into stuff that he doesn't understand or better said that blows his wildest imaginations. Then there is Wang (Dennis Dun) who is the hero of the story. Its done in a clever subversive way as he is not the main character who is also modest and calm. You have Egg Shen (Victor Wong) who is a wizard who works as bus driver for sightseers. He is hilarious enjoyable to watch. You have Gracie Law (Kim Catrall) who works as lawyer that is a strong character and no damsel in distress in a classic way (Could defend herself without the supernatural elements). Then there is the story: It is a masterpiece. You've got a lot of Chinese mythology (Don't know how accurate this really is) mixed with fantasy elements, an ancient curse and of cause the battle between good and evil. It is hard to explain without spoilers how good all elements fit together. The humour is also enjoyable. Again they often use dry humour or subversions to deliver great jokes. I want to talk about the martial arts / battles. This movie delivers everything. You got awesomeness, gravity defying and good sword play. What impresses me are also the special effects. They still look good and are fitting. Some far more modern movies have worse effects. Like John Carpenters other masterpiece “The Thing” this movie was not loved by critics and fans at release. It became over time an insider tip and later a cult classic. Overall this is a movie made with so much love and care that it deserves 10/10. Bonus: There is an episode of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Lo Pan and the three storms as villains. Expand

I watched it as a child many times, and recently gave it another try, to see if it stands the test of time. I especially loved how the protagonist is full of bravado, but low on wit, and tends to get into trouble with his bullheaded approach. There's a joke there about action heroes, which works very well.
The villain is sinister, his henchmen are both ridiculous and powerful, and the good guys do things in the name of love - either the love of a woman, or the love of one's truck.
While ostensibly dealing in "dark" material like forced prostitution and gang violence, everything stays fun, and that's clearly the idea.
For the 80s, the effects, all the Chinese lore, and cinematic martial arts fighting style were new. The movie deserves extra credit for that.
My one issue with it is that the constant action can be tiring. We're talking almost 100 minutes rife with martial arts, gunfights, and lightning bolts.

Such films in the 80s who just did not shoot. But I'm sure Big Trouble in Little China brought fame only that the film again starred Kurt Russell, and was directed by John Carpenter. For the most part, Big Trouble in Little China is a completely passing movie with terrible wrestling scenes. When you look at it, you get the feeling that this is a film parody. You can encourage fans of 80s action movies and films with Kurt Russell to watch. The average viewer of Big Trouble in Little China is more likely not to like it, it will seem secondary. Well, thank you for the first appearance of Raiden even before the creation of the first part of Mortal Combat. Expand
