For what it claims to be, this film is nearly perfect. Make no mistake, this film IS a supernatural teen romance. That said, it has clever (and legitimately funny, in the right way) writing, genuine acting and an interesting set up. Some ofFor what it claims to be, this film is nearly perfect. Make no mistake, this film IS a supernatural teen romance. That said, it has clever (and legitimately funny, in the right way) writing, genuine acting and an interesting set up. Some of the dialogue is a little canned/forced, the narrative breezes through summaries that could have used more explanation, and the story does come across as formulaic. But honestly, who goes into a film like this expecting to be surprised by plot points? Unlike flicks like twilight which survive mostly on built in appeal (in that, if you haven't read the books, the movies are bland, boring, outright bad FILM, regardless of what you might think of the source material), Beautiful Creatures is a fun, balanced and enjoyable film for the uninitiated. (though I've heard that some changes were made from the source that might turn off dedicated fans)

If you like the genre, you SHOULD see this film. It is easily the best version of type on film, so far. If the trailer looked interesting to you, and you go into the film expecting nothing more than what it claims to be, you should be pleasantly surprised.

Pros:
A supernatural teen romance with a little more brains
Solid Acting
Mostly good writing.

Cons:
Doesn't really try for anything "more" than its genre
Some weak/canned dialogue
low-ish budget effects in some scenes.

I am actually excited to see this film become a franchise, and hope to see it do well.… Expand

A friend of mine talked me into seeing this with him. He knows I hate the Twilight franchise, and this seems like it's aimed for the same market, but I went anyway. It turned out to be WAY better than Twilight. The acting across the boardA friend of mine talked me into seeing this with him. He knows I hate the Twilight franchise, and this seems like it's aimed for the same market, but I went anyway. It turned out to be WAY better than Twilight. The acting across the board was good, and the dialogue was believable. It also had some humor throughout, unlike the over-dramatic melodrama of Twighlight. Alden Ehrenreich was a charmer in the lead role, and the movie would not have been a success without him. The film did feel a little rushed in its pacing towards the end, like they knew they had to wrap it up. Overall, better than expected.… Expand

This was much better than the critics/users scores imply. Yea its a bit of the now typical supernatural movie, but the lead characters are so darn cute and charming it really makes it much more enjoyable.

This was actually a good movie. Entertaining, very well acted, a well conceived and executed plot with good dialogue, which I find to be a rarity in blockbuster hits these days...especially in the teen romance department. She (Alice Englert) isn't typical pretty either, but can act OK. Much of the screen time is spent with the two of them talking. Not much real drama is generated. There are some decent special effect sequences, but nothing dazzling. The supporting stars (Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, Viola Davis) add most of the movie's character. It's never outright bad and may appeal to young fans of the novel, but if you're looking for a mismatched romance see "Warm Bodies" instead.… Expand

I thought it was a great movie, you know some flaws in the script but it was highly entertaining. We have to remember this movie is based in a book that's for Young Adults so as a movie based on that kind of books it was great.

OK. Extra points for nice production design, engaging characters, and reasonable special effects. Basically, this is just romantic posturing by teenagers in a supernatural context, but with lots of humourous touches, and with a strongOK. Jeremy Irons stands out in the supporting cast, probably because of his hideous cravat. And any movie that makes you feel as if you have missed out on something important by not reading (and particularly by not reading Vonnegut and Bukowski) deserves a speciql commendation.… Expand

I never heard of it before watching, but I liked it. I liked allot of the characters, and the actors did a good job.I thought the music made it shine. It`s better than that Twilight stuff. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film may relate to themes of the Twilight Franchise, but Beautiful Creatures is an amazing film. The story revolves around young, schoolboy Ethan and a witch or 'caster' named Lena. Leans 16th birthday is approaching and the day reveals weather Lena is being claimed to the light or the dark. Their love is powerful, but so are Lena's powers. Altogether, the film is a beautiful, love story involving suspense and secrets. Beautiful Creatures is the first of a trilogy, and I'm deeply looking forward to watching the next film.… Expand

This a great movie about witches. It goes out of the norm and comfort zone of typical witch movies. I very much enjoyed watching and wish the movie would have been longer.

Male here and married. I am a reader and i was excited to hear that they were making the Beautiful Creatures into a movie. I watched it and was slightly disappointed in the turn they wanted to take in the movie however that is the way itMale here and married. I am a reader and i was excited to hear that they were making the Beautiful Creatures into a movie. I watched it and was slightly disappointed in the turn they wanted to take in the movie however that is the way it normally is with books made into movies. I believe if they got some better lead roles that the movie might have had a little bit of a better crowd behind it but i think the two did an amazing job in starting their career in this tough field of work where 1 out of millions hit it big. All and all look forward to the next movie and how they grow into their roles.… Expand

Remarkable movie. Though I think I'm biased because I am a student of shamanism, of the ancient relationship between humans and divinity, humans and mother earth. Whoever wrote the representation of communicating with Spirit is clearly alsoRemarkable movie. I don't know why is everybody comparing twilight with everything and every movie, twilight was a good saga but is over, twilight ended. I know that there is a difference between people who read the books and the ones who didn't like me. There's exceptional acting here--by all, but especially Alden Ehrenreich, Emma Thompson, Jeremy Irons, who expertly convey the movie's underlying themes (which are disturbing, which may partly explain the denial of the "trashers"): i.e., about wasting your life, choosing your passion (or at least what path to take in life), and the horrendous trials of adolescence: resisting temptations, controlling your temper, focusing your energy on your raison d'être (if you're lucky enough to find it). I loved Ethan's soliloquy on how his future would unfold when Macon (Jeremy Irons) put him under his spell. Reviewers like Bart & jennanana should take note and worry that their futures aren't similarly tragic.… Expand

The film tells the story of what happens when Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich)Twilight is over so now the search for the new replacement begins and first up is Beautiful Creatures, a film without a middle or and end, just a really long beginning. The film tells the story of what happens when Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich) starts having dreams about a mysterious girl called Lena (Alice Englert). When he meets her his life is turned upside down as he is introduced to magic and the rest of Lena's family, a mixture of dark and light casters intent on controlling Lena's decision of which side (light or dark) to join. Beautiful Creatures has one storyline, one thing propelling the story meaning it isn't complicated and it isn't hard to follow. It also means that this story requires a conclusion as it is the only possible story to conclude and if there isn't a conclusion the end of this film will not resonate and the film will ultimately lack any kind of emotional draw whatsoever. Well it turns out that the director felt an ambiguous ending would be more affecting than a conclusive one. He is mistaken though with the ending of the film making a mockery of a pretty decent love story and a film that has some good things going for it like good performances by the two leads and by supporting characters such as Viola Davis and Emmy Rossum. The cast look just as confused as I was when the finale came around as they muddle through pointless scenes designed to resolve nothing as the plot unravels and the film crumbles. For a film about a tragic curse and the decision of whether to be evil or good, Beautiful Creatures has no real stakes, neither of the two leads are really in jeopardy, in fact the action is always done in an almost comic way to lighten the melodramatic mood meaning any kind of tragic ending is not in the cards. It's ultimately garbage that in trying to provide a romantic ending have ruined a movie that had a decent melodrama, an enjoyable lead couple and some decent writing (until the end). It's a film that builds and builds to a climax that never arrives and therefore it feels like nothing happens at all making the entire experience forgettable and frustrating.… Expand

The director of Beautiful Creatures obviously has an obsession to the popular Twilight series. For almost the entire movie I felt as if I was watching a remake of Eclipse with a twist that it was about witches instead of vampires. For almost the entire movie I felt as if I was watching a remake of Eclipse with a twist that it was about witches instead of vampires. Special effects were decent but sub-par compared to the new standards set by movies like Prometheus and The Avengers. Really only a few characters stand out from the rest and it is disappointing to see that their talent in acting may have been wasted on this movie. The plot was what was really disappointing overall however. From the beginning of the movie you may have difficulty following along and each event is hardly strung together. This movie would have done much better if the director had decided to break the movie into a possible two or three part series. While normally I would never want to see a movie like this be able to have a sequel, I believe that if it had then the cast would have been able to work on the story more and possibly progress into a movie that could have been at least decent. It is frustrating to see a movie with potential fall so short of expectations like this. If you truly are a fan on Twilight than you might enjoy this but for anyone else, I suggest saving your money.… Expand

Let me just start by saying this movie wasn't good at all. My friend and I were having a sleepover party and we started to watch this. We barely made it through to the end. I have never read the book, but I hope when I do it's way better than what I experienced. From what a lot of disappointed reviews were saying was that it had many changes from the book. Beautiful Creatures also failed at the box office. With that being said, you would it expect it to be a terrible film.
First of all, the accents really killed the mood in the film. I'm not sure if they had accents like this in the book, but they were just awful. It's suppose to be a dramatic film, that wasn't dramatic enough for me.
The actors overall did a pretty impressive job. Alice Englert is from what I understand is pretty new to the big screen. I think she was one of the best parts in the film. I think she portrayed her character very well. I also think Emmy Rossum did a great job playing Sarafina. They helped keep the movie alive. As much as I hate to say this, there wasn't enough eye candy for me. I know looks aren't everything, but I think it is fair to say the actors weren't as attractive as I'd thought they'd be.
I think this movie failed because it didn't relate to the book, the screenplay was awful, and the accents weren't the smartest move. This movie could have been so much better if it had more suspense. I'm a teenage movie fanatic, but this movie didn't do me justice.… Expand

The story is fresh and different from all the clichés you'd expect to see in this space; setting, characters, turning points - all are unique and very well acted. One more observation - the pacing is perfect, more so than in any movie I have ever seen. There is no hurry but just when an arc comes close to sustain, a major and unexpected development occurs. It's hard to describe, I've not seen this before. I'll read the book next, and very much recommend this movie to anyone. For reference, the closest movie I can think of in terms of the feeling it evoked might be Gilbert Grape.
(Postscript - I read the book and was underwhelmed; it's remarkable that the director was able to make sure a great movie out of such poor source material)… Expand
