Think of it as if Lars von Trier and Charlie Kaufman directed their own twisted version of “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.”

Hilarious. This is comedy of the year. Every moment is completely absurd and laugh out loud funny. I had no idea what this movie was about going in, and man did I take a trip. Top tier artsy movie.

Fun factor is surely a 10. But to grade it just by fun-factor would be irresponsible as a amateur critic, haha. It was surely a mess, albeit a controlled one. I've seen these controlled messes before and sometimes they work (Synechdoche NY by Kaufman) and sometimes they just fall flat on their faces (Cloud Atlas by Wachowskis). You gotta admire the depth Aster goes into on this big fat metaphors and slices of life condensed. Lot's of great Oedipal metaphors, mixed with 'seize the day' moods. I just had a blast deconstructing it. But at the end of the day it doesn't tie up nicely with a bow (or Beau, if you will, haha) like something like Kaufman would make. And also at the end of the day, we have to remember that we're dealing with a horror director here. So it's not quite as "heady" as it looks. But we've got some fabulous editing, great mixed media, a different kind of Phoenix shows up for this one, more subdued and quirky than ever, with a supporting cast that does just that, and does it well. Like I said, I would love to give this film a 9. And were it directed or re-written by someone like Charlie Kaufman, maybe it'd get there? But this was also a cluster of metaphors for cluster's sake and got a little messy. Definitely watch it! But I don't think you'll be jumping up to tell your friends afterward. You will have a good time though with this surrealist mind bender. One word to describe, 'fun'. Not mindblowing though. Which is what I was hoping for. Expand

Joaquin Phoenix also gives an amusing performance of someone with insane anxiety, Unfortunately, the story is overstuffed and nonsensical. The first hour starts with a lot of intrigue but it becomes almost painfully dull after that. Weird things happen with no rhyme and reason, the multitude of stories and character threads don't connect, and the self-indulgent nature of this whole film. A big issue is the excessive and exhausting 3-hour runtime with its slow pacing. Doesn't help that there are so many scenes of just nothing happening, such as characters walking or sleeping. I give praise for doing a big swing on something original but this time it was a huge miss. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first half of the film was a 9 or even a 10 out of 10 for me. The very un unsettling setting and the very unique direction kept my extremely engaged. The production design was stunning and the world of Beau is Afraid was one of the most interesting I have seen in a movie this year. I didn't really know what was going on and I was very excited to find out what happens next. Unfortunately, as the film moves into the last act, it becomes so self indulgent especially during the play in the woods scene and the final act reveal was very disappointing. I still admired the film's originality, Joaquin Phoenix's performance, and the amazing cinematography and production design. This film is definitely not for everyone. Expand

I didn’t particularly like hereditary, but thought Midsommar was a humorous and well crafted film. I refused to watch the trailer so I could experience this film blind with no expectations or foreknowledge of the plot. I’m glad I did. I would just say don’t take this film too seriously (it’s a farce) and a very enjoyable comedy fever dream of absurdity. It has a very dark sense of humor and I couldn’t help but feel bad for this character, but over a 3 hour time span you eventually just let go and enjoy the ride. I laughed out loud at one scene which I haven’t in a theater in some time. The film is 20 minutes too long and indulgent. Some of the cruel humor is a little lost on me, but when this film is funny it is seriously funny. Highly recommended. Expand

I thought it would be worth it to check out his latest, Beau is Afraid. I found it to be a long, unrelenting, and disturbing film. I wouldn't be surprised if many label it as unwatchable, and I wouldn't blame them. This is going to be a very polarizing film. That said, I loved it. It is exquisitely shot, wonderfully acted, and hilarious. I was chuckling throughout the entire movie, while also feeling a wide mix of emotions scene after scene. That review said that Beau Is Afraid is the result of a director who was given too much freedom, and after weighing it for a while I admit that I fully agree with that opinion.

You can defend it in many ways, visionary is what I hear most, but on this occasion, Ari Aster went too far with the pretension.

And there will be enormous concealment to mask its issues with the excuse that there are too many elements buried in its plot. That you yourself as a viewer will need more than one viewing to examine, reflect and evaluate its content, and yet Aster, as he did with Midsommar in his two versions, in my opinion apparently believes that coherence is overrated.

I won't do an autopsy of this film, after all there will be multiple interpretations, and this is mine, and the process itself, even beyond the social critique it implies, Beau Is Afraid seems more like the demons its director couldn't get out in therapy and better decided to express them on film.

I can't deny his ambition and the scope of that ambition, but that's not enough to articulate to best effect that this film is the epic journey he undoubtedly believes he has created.

From its excessive running time - I can't fathom how he had a four-hour cut ready - to its devastating self-indulgence and exhaustive psychological onslaught, Beau Is Afraid is a tortuous, psychedelic and metaphorical journey that showcases much of its director's creative talent, and is supported by a more than solid performance by Joaquin Phoenix, but never seems to find the right route between its black humor, its surreal horror vibe and the psychoanalysis of its Oedipus complex.

It's wanting to reach for so much that its director forgot that a narrative structure is needed and not just letting the passages flow, believing that this amounts to the sum of a better argumentative experience.

Ari Aster delivered the kind of film for which the casual moviegoers hate auteur cinema and offered a perfect odyssey to those who advocate too much for such "smart" arthouse filmmaking.

I won't be the one to say that Beau Is Afraid is a bad film, because it's not, but in terms of results above expectations, the gap between the two ends of the spectrum is huge.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While it's runtime and some sequences are unnecessarily long, Beau Is Afraid is a weirdly wonderful movie that's hard to categorize. Definitely don't watch it expecting a horror movie like Ari Aster's previous 2 movies. I wouldn't call it a horror movie, but it incorporates elements or horror and has some parts that might make you squirm. It's more of a absurdist black comedy adventure movie. It's unclear whether what's happening is our world warped by Beau's fearful worldview, or some alternate universe where almost everyone is horrific, but the world shown is clearly very hostile and confusing for Beau. The movie does a good job of portraying this in an over the top way, from the streets full of people casually murdering and stabbing others, to the characters who actively try to set up and break Beau. Beau is meek and mild mannered to an absurd degree, yet people are literally out to get him at every turn. My favorite part of the movie is how the audience is able to both sympathize with Beau and laugh at the misfortune that befalls him. Beau is afraid of almost everything and everyone, and his worst fears get exaggerated tenfold and end up being reality. You genuinely feel bad for him and want things to get better for him, but the absurdity of what's happening makes you laugh too. It makes the ending that much more jarring. Some parts, namely the play sequence, definitely went on for too long, and I could tell the audience tuned out a bit there. While it's beautifully animated, its purpose wasn't clear to me and it didn't need to go on for as long as it did. Some elements didn't make much sense to me, like the giant penis monster (can't believe I wrote that), and the ending felt abrupt. In all honesty, if it weren't for how much I liked Beau's character and how much I enjoyed the exploration of guilt and anxiety, I probably would've rated this a 6 or 5. This is a very weird movie and many people will dislike or even hate it for valid reasons. Expand

However, to compare his other films to this is a disservice to the reason this film is out now, as this started as a passion project gone almost entirely off the rails. To pick at the themes of the film is unnecessary, as the movie sorta tells you up front what it's about; Guilt. Beau's anxiety eats at his mind every second of every day, and his past with his mother does not help one bit. One thing for certain is that this is definitely Ari Aster's most surreal film, playing into Beau's mental health problems as well as Aster's adolescent sense of humor, which also makes it his funniest movie so far. What is so polarizing about this movie I feel is that surreal non-linear formatting of scenes, which while I feel fits well with Beau and how he may view people and the world, feel a little out of place and forced, even for this type of film. The worst part I feel, however, is the final 20 or 30 minutes. The ending feels extremely rushed and not warranted in any way and just seems to go all out on the surreal just for the sake of having a memorable conclusion, even if I do agree it ties everything up alright. If you're in the mood to have your brain split in two, then this is a must watch, but if you're looking for a film by one of the greatest thriller/horror directors of our time, well, you're better off with Midsommar or Hereditary. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is overly long. There are parts of it that are very funny but the biggest problem this movie has is its main character. Beau is ineffectual, bland and boring. He's a human being whose spark has been drained from him due to his life circumstances. You feel bad for him but you also don't want to spend 3 hours with the guy. At no point in this movie do you care enough about the character of Beau that you want to see him actually get to any sort of destination. Nor does Beau develop enough as a character that makes his odyssey worth watching. His world is filled with terrible people who do terrible things to each other. Your time is important, use it elsewhere. Expand

But I walked out of this movie an hour in. It's insufferable. Sadistic torture porn. Maybe it was going somewhere but I'll never know and I don't care. If this is what Aster is doing now I'll start thinking of him as off brand Spike Jonze.

Hereditary and Midsommar were not exactly easy viewing but the constant building of anxiety was balanced by humor, aesthetic beauty and breaks in the tension. This felt like an unrelenting dental drill. One long, shrill note. And unlike Aster's previous films the score wasn't good and the cinematography was ugly. Most settings looked like sound stages and the colors were bleached out. The only thing this film could be saying is an attempt at communicating the pain of living with high anxiety and mental illness. It made its point within 30 minutes. I didn't need any more.

Oh, and all love to Joaquin Phoenix but his lack of enunciation is getting worse every film and at this point he's basically unintelligible.

"Enter the Void", which I have yet to see any comparisons drawn to "Beau Is Afraid," is similar and infinitely better. The first act was brilliant. From that point forward, it takes a nosedive in narrative fluidity and I often found myself bored by the same essential loop occurring over and over and over. I love a slow burn and can be very patient if the story is engaging enough. I actually loved "Skinamarink" for example, which is a definitive slow burn film. Here, I kept hoping for a payoff that is hinted at numerous times, but unfortunately would never come. In fact, this 3 hour film could be cut in half, to 90 minutes, and I'd still feel it's way too long. I think the film (and director) believes its being clever and deeply contemplarive but unfortunately it's just too self indulent for its own good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beau is Afraid had all the indications of being something that I should’ve skipped to spend time with my family or play poker or whatever: Joaquin Phoenix, coming off of his Oscar for Best Actor chose this film by the darling indie director Ari Aster, whose work has been documented faithfully at HOTS over the years. What could go wrong? feels like more of a dare than a question when talking about this movie. To call it a character study is to excuse the fact that there is only the loosest of plots, in the sense that Aristotle tells us all action must flow from necessity and there was no need for really any of this movie to have happened. The entirety of my experience in theater was thinking about how the fact that four people had excused themselves from my invite hadn’t given me enough of an indication of how much of a commitment this would be. I went in patting myself on the back for abandoning Wife and Creature at home at the blushing age of 7PM expecting to be back at 9:30, maybe 10 at the latest. I had groceries to pick up, maybe even a cheeky radler to toast the new week, and it was only about two and a half hours in when I started to wonder idly how they were going to tie up all of the loose ends that I took my phone out to ask Wife if maybe I had booked myself for a double feature without realizing it, which is when she texted back, “I’m so sorry it’s not close to being done.”

As someone who has sat through Babylon and Avatar: The Way of the Water somewhat recently, I am no stranger to longish movies that people accidentally find themselves and then sheepishly exit around the 120 minute mark. I’m sure the sense of alienation and ennui I felt in the final third of this movie has a lot to do with having to experience it alone, without a fellow victim. That’s not to say there weren’t lots of other people there. One woman who sat in front of me laughed loud enough to make up for the rest of our stunned silence, one of those aggressive laughs that feels like it’s trying to cow the rest of us into submission, persuade us of the genre of Ari Aster’s lack of self-restraint. The last time I felt like I needed persuasion of whether something was funny or not was The Dead Don’t Die, and the last time I felt like I was the person breaking out into uncontrollable awkward laughter (maybe for the wrong reasons?) was Jon Stewart’s Rosewater. I wasn’t inclined to leave, but thinking back on it, I wonder if my night would’ve been dramatically improved if I had shouted FIRE FIRE FIRE and evacuated the theater, if the cost of never being allowed into that movie theater again would be equaled by the exquisite pleasure of not knowing how Beau is Afraid ends. I’m still not sure.

Justin Chang at NPR communicated all of the disappointment and perplexity that one need mention about Beau is Afraid. He, in his infinite wisdom, is able to see four distinct acts: the apartment, the recovery, the forest, and the childhood home. That’s kind of him, because the alternative was my dark and stormy assessment of the film on my drive home, shouting at the shadows in my car and cursing the fact that I might never encounter another soul who regarded his time so worthless that he had seen to the end of Beau. I think in some ways this movie hasn’t just spoiled itself for me, but it has retroactively reached into the past and stolen other movies by the same author, the same actor and made me reassess whether they were enjoyable as well.

So much of this film, it's humor, it's dramatic moments, it's more emotional moments, simply can't be classified as "basic". This is a very funny movie, this is a very dark and depressing movie, it is a very thought provoking movie. And it is also very strange. To some, it could be infuriatingly strange. But I think to others, this movie could bring up a lot of alloyed emotions about very sensitive subjects such as trauma, grief, guilt and mental illness. Expand

I liked Hereditary and loved Midsommar, but this was just an aimless mess. I was interested enough in the first act, but once Aster gets let off the leash there’s no turning back.

Sadly the movie has an issue which is it's length. The movie is too long and that makes the middle part a chore to watch . It felt like in the half way of the movie they started throwing random things to see if they would stick or not (mostly they do not). This results in 40 minutes which could have been easily cut-off and still provide us with more insight in regards to our characters mentality. By the end of the movie it did have some saving graces and they weren't that badly done (the movie was filmed pretty beautifully btw) but the effect kinda wore off even before you reach the ending. Not a bad movie but not that great either. At least it was a little bit different than what we are used to watch. Expand

Fantastic acting of Joaquin Phoenix. It starts good, it goes good, but I didn't like the ending of the movie.

Si vous savez apprécié l'art de l'absurdisme , si vous avez aimer un livre tel que "l'étranger" d'Albert Camus, alors vous aimerez le film
