Ground war Independence Day if it had less cheese/comedy, but the same level of patriotic gung ho. I ended up liking this action fest. So yeah always fun for a re-watch.

Well I went in not expecting a great super movie. What I got was 2 hours of Halo :) A combination of Black Hawk Down style war movie with Halo aliens. It was a solid fun two hours. I enjoyed it. I went into this movie not expecting much, and was pleasantly surprised to find a exciting action film with tolerable acting and story. Set in present day Los Angeles, Battle: Los Angeles follows a platoon of marines playing their part in defending the city against a large scale alien invasion. Granted, not for everyone's taste. Imagine Black Hawk Down meets Independence DaySet in present day Los Angeles, Battle: Los Angeles follows a platoon of marines playing their part in defending the city against a large scale alien invasion. Granted, not for everyone's taste. Imagine Black Hawk Down meets Independence Day with all the usual war movie cliches thrown in and then some for good measure. Credit should be given to the screenplay for not giving in to the usual expletive filled rants so typical of marine films. This allowed the film to be rated 12 and I'm sure was appreciated by younger cinema-goers. The almost-documentary style filming of the aliens arrival and initial platoon movements work and the film is capable of developing a pretty reasonable level of suspense as the platoon encounter the first aliens. The special effects are fantastic and result in several visually intense action sequences. Bryan Tyler should also be praised for producing a big epic score that fits well with the scale of the invasion and the task faced by the characters. Ultimately though, the cliches win the day and the film pays for not providing any real human aspect for the viewers to relate to, with the exception of Eckhart. Saving Private Ryan remains the outstanding reference for how war movies can engage the viewer through character emotion. Sadly this is lacking in Battle, but the film will definitely appeal to sci-fi and action fans without a doubt.… Expand

This was a fabulously great movie. The CG could had been better for the land aliens, other then that, this was a excitingly awesome movie. Great Movie, I reallllllyyyyy enjoyed it. I can understand some of the gripes people have with the sudden shift changes in the PLOT, But its a war flick about Aliens trying to take over are world. This movie showed the strength that even in the Direst of odds men an women of the human race can band together to survive an overcome the worst of odds to keep going on an living. I wish it would of got better reviews an more revenue cause then they might of been able to make a trilogy or a saga at least out of this movie, its a shame people are just to lame to look at the over all idea of something, instead they sit there an nit pick it to **** Just a shame. The aggressively handheld nature of the camera is an immediateThis film was pitched to us as Black Hawk Down mixed with Independence Day, but a more apt description might be Black Hawk Down and District Nine, with a splash of Cloverfield. The aggressively handheld nature of the camera is an immediate callback to Cloverfield, while the situation of Marines fighting it out in a wartorn urban battlefield is exactly like BHD. District Nine's excellent visual realization of CGI extraterrestrials merged almost seamlessly with live action is repeated here, along with some rather gory dissection of said aliens.

Black Hawk Down's legacy is all over this film. While BHD was a masterpiece of a war film and Battle LA is not as good, there are a lot of borrowed elements. The epic visual of numerous helicopters flying in formation while the camera slowly pans around them worked wonderfully in Ridley Scott's film, and it does so again here. Also, there's a shot of a rocket flying through a window and exploding directly behind Michelle Rodriguez's character. Again, instant callback to BHD. The operatic action beats that BHD nailed so well are faithfully utilized by Jonathan Liebesman to deliver a satisfying and meaty action experience.

At first, you're just watching very blurry, dusty, murky... out of focus shots of the aliens, and you might start to worry and wonder and fret. I sure did. You're worried that they probably didn't have the budget to show the aliens in all their glory, and we'd just get quick glimpses of their features. Either the CGI technology wasn't good enough or convincing enough or they just couldn't afford to show it. Well, they quickly lay that fear to rest, because after the initial firefight, you do get to see the aliens in all their gooey, cybernetic glory. It feels like they learned from District Nine, with a mostly convincing and believable visual of CGI aliens fighting with real actors in a physical location. The film as a whole is not the thoughtful meditation that D9 was, but the borrowing of its impressive technical innovation is clearly on display.

I've mentioned Cloverfield, so we've gotta talk about the shaky cam. It's the most defining element of that film. How do they use it here? Well...the shaky cam does come on a bit strong. You need to strike a good balance, in order to capture that authentic in-the-moment experience, without overwhelming the audience with dizzying blurs that get annoying and nauseating. For the most part, the shaky cam makes sense, with the camera shaking around when the cameraman runs with the Marines to cover, or the jittering of a shaky chopper ride with turbulence. Those all make sense and the film gets better with it as it goes on.

However, the beginning of the film did annoy me with its shaky cam, simply because the scenes were all taking place before the invasion and there was no need for all the motion. Like, we're watching a scene of two guys talking in an office, with one of the guys telling the other that he's leaving the service. There's no need for that camera to wobble. Or watching a Marine walk toward a grave. Again, why is the camera wobbling so much? The cameraman is stationary, is he trembling for some reason? Are his nerves acting up? Does he have Parkinson's? It becomes distracting. Once the film moves past this prologue and gets right into the action, the shaky cam is mostly fine, except for the ride in the APC near the end of the film. At first I thought it was a Bradley, because they mentioned the Bushmaster 25mm chaingun, but it actually looks like a LAV, which makes sense as that's a Marine vehicle. That scene was in the dark and the cuts were so fast and shaky that you mostly just saw a lot of blurs and couldn't really tell what was happening. It really began to feel like some action scenes in Batman Begins. This is no good, when your audience notices that they aren't seeing enough and start to wonder exactly what's happening. That's when the shaky cam goes too far and fails as a visual technique.

An unavoidable aspect of the film that leaps to mind are the cliches. There are so many cliches in here, it's almost hard to count. Martinez, the hispanic Lt, says goodbye to his pregnant wife. Well, you know that guy's gonna die. Of course, he's a green Lt right out of school who doesn't have experience and requires the seasoned staff sergeant to help him out. There's a black marine with dorky glasses who's about to get married. Surprisingly, he doesn't die. The lines are pretty hilarious in how cliched and overused they are. Some examples like, "You are to kill anything that's not human!" and "That was some John Wayne **** you just pulled" and "Let it out. It's okay to cry. Your father was a brave man." I'm paraphrasing here from memory, so those lines may not be 100% accurate, but you get the general gist. It's a very well-trodden path here.… Expand

Thankfully the critics disliked it which helped me get it for rock bottom prices. Another own goal for the film industry courtesy of the film critics. The film industry would be better off banning critics from any screenings and allow the more savvy public to judge for themselves.… Expand

At the time that i watched this it was absolutely amazing! Great visual effects, great action, great explosions. But when i watched it again it lost some of that, i think that this is more of an EPIC movie that is best the first time youAt the time that i watched this it was absolutely amazing! But the story was un-explained and un-finished, horribly terrible.

This movie for me was a pleasant surprise !!! I came into this one thinking it was a standard alien invasion flick that wanted to give its own twist to thrill us. It does do this adequately for the first half of the movie but we've also seen this before in War of the Worlds and Independence Day. The intense battle scenes are also reminiscent of Blackhawk Down.

I thought this movie was made in the 2nd half. I thought it did an excellent job of showing the true heart of a warrior. I thought it did a great job showing soldiers sticking to a questionable and even impossible mission; this when the doubt is in the leadership as much as in the mission itself. I also thought that it showed that our military trying to fight takes as much brains as it does courage. I was inspired because while it offers no guarantees of sucess (and the movie shows that going into battle against an unknown and superior enemy there are none) it also shows that you should NEVER give up. We are told that our military is the best in the world. If what's shown in Aaron Eckard's Nantz character is in the heart of our military you will get a better ideal of why it is the best.

John Wayne is mentioned in the movie and this movie does show True Grit !!!… Expand

it`s one of those `been there,done that` type of movies but man its just great to watch.reminds me of Independence Day mixed with Saving Private Ryan and The Band Of Brothers. I actually loved this movie. It reminded me of Black Hawk Down only with aliens. It could have used an R rating in my opinion to allow for some more graphic content but it was an intense, fun, action-packed movie. What more could you ask forI actually loved this movie. Battle: Los Angeles is a very good film. The movie reminds me a bit of a video game (e.g. Call of Duty) the way some scenes are played out. People tend to forget that the best stories are often repeated to exhaustion every other year with a different tweak and a different cast, and they still go and clamor each title - yet, for this movie, "more of the same" was seen as negative. It has all the best elements of a good sci-fi, of a good drama, and of a good movie, and the fact it's long and try to engage you with the characters, while not that all successful, is a merit to this movie. Yes you have seen this movie before dozens of times with different names, but that's exactly why this is so good: it does not try to set itself apart from "all of those other invasion movies", instead, it munches all the good qualities and point of views together to make a WHOLE experience. It's not just the point of view of some survivors, not just the point of view of some mariners, not the point of view of the President, not even the point of view of a joe-doe with a camera - it's all of that, together, and with a fine print: the aliens MAKE SENSE, their goals MAKE SENSE, the strategies MAKE SENSE, and how mankind try to fight back MAKE SENSE - that, alone, sets this movie apart, and way above, most of the others. Perhaps it's too smart and logic to critics or the common viewer, but those looking for more, this is it, THE invasion movie, period. Why I rate it 9 and not 10? because the movie failed at MARKETING and telling people this movie was a different take on the invasion subject, and not just "another" invasion movie.… Expand

I liked it. I wish I had seen it in the theater because all that motion is really a problem for my LCD television. Sure, there were a lot of cliques and some bad acting. This is a tale of what it would be like, for the most part, to have aliens land on our soil. The movie is visually stunning. The acting is not as bad as one would have thought. The special effects are believable. If you are one who simply wants to be entertained, I believ Transformers 3 is playing in theatres right now. If you are looking for the first alien invasion that hits on all cylinders, take a peek. the bottom line being, if you love good movies, then you will love this. If you don't, you won't. I grow tired of the lack of imagination and the prude know it all when it comes to the creative mind in film making. There may be a Titanic 2 in your future.… Expand

I waited and bought the blu-ray because the reviews were so poor when it was in the theaters, fortunately the movie was much better than critics reviews. The special effects and sound were excellent, lots of well made, intense action sequences, mostly ground troops vs alien battles. The battle sequences are very reminiscent of the type seen in Saving private Ryan or Band of Brothers except the enemies are aliens instead of nazi's. A very fast pace from beginning to the end. The only real let down for me was the beginning because it could have been so much better, very little time was devoted to the aliens landing on earth and being seen for the first time, within minutes of the start of the film, Los Angeles is almost decimated, aliens ae briefly seen on a fuzzy tv news report marching and you are thrown into the action with almost no build up. I would have liked to have seen the aliens emerge after some erie and/or creepy start. After the first 15 minutes the characters start to develop. Definitely not a 10 but a solid 8.… Expand

I get a lot of movies from Red Box and I wasn't expecting a lot, but this movie really surprised me. It is great sci fi alone, but as an army infantry vet - I couldn't get over how legit it was as a military film. It is great sci fi alone, but as an army infantry vet - I couldn't get over how legit it was as a military film. I absolutely loved it!! I thought it was good. Like others have said, if you are looking for an Oscar-winner, this isn't your movie. If, however, you want a sweet USA kicking some alien ass-type movie, then this is a great film.

If you like sci fi , action and military films, this will go straight up your flagpole !
The alien tech , consisting of acid and phosphor based rounds, is quite naturally vastly superior to the human tech and as such, mankind gets its backside handed to it royally.

The film follows a squad of US marines as they try to extricate themselves from the heart of an invasion zone after an inexperienced officer leads them into an ambush.
They have to fight for every foot of ground,and pay heavily all the way.

Ignore the naysayers. It's an action movie, and as such isn't there to win oscars. It's there to entertain.
It does this successfully.

I'll be buying this on Bluray when it's released

Finally a more realistic approach to the whole "alien invasion" genre. Gritty, intense and with characters you actually care about, it is what films like Independence Day should have been. Pacing is excellent though its wanes a bit towards the end once some of the mystery is dimmed. Overall it delivers thrills throughout and I sincerely hope to see this bud into a lucrative franchise (unfortunately its the dollar that drives the industry).… Expand

I enjoyed this movie as I was in the mood for a "Modern US military vs. aliens" movie. If you take it with a grain of salt, its not bad. Battle Los Angeles is a masterpiece of CGI (Computer Generated Images/Imagery); A shame the story line wasn't that tad bit better. It's funny how almost every military person who has seen this film applauds it for its great combat realism, right down to the gear and lingo used. You get Battle: Los Angeles, probably the most underrated film of the year. I mean, seriously, critics? You guys have such high expectations! Oh well, anyways, I'd like to point out the bad things first, because that's the kinda guy I am. at one point i the film, the CGI got really hard to look at, and there were two little girls who were completely pointless characters. All they do is scream, cry and hold the solders' hands from time to time. Do they bring out any emotion like that one older boy? NO! Why, movie makers, Why? But other than that, the film was actually better than I expected! And I felt a connection to the beginning part where the aliens first reveal themselves at the Santa Monica Pier. I thought "Holy sh*t, I was just there this morning!" Because I was. But as odd as it seems, the aliens get progressively weaker throughout the film. It seemed like they were walking tanks at the start, but then turned into weak-ass grunts near the end. Whatever, the aliens aren't something we haven't seen before, and that's that. All in all a GREAT popcorn flick, just dont take it to seriously and just enjoy it for what it is...a nice sci-fi action thriller where humans are fighting to live. not the best sci-fi flick but its by far not the worst. 6/10 for me simply b/c I thought the computer animated aliens/space ships needed a little more work. I thought District 9 even did a better job with the aliens but wasnt bad when they showed the close ups.… Expand

Look people, I've read some of the reviews, and I think people miss the point of movies anymore. This movie was to tell a story of Marines, Soldiers, Corpsman, and Airman fighting an alien invasion. This movie was designed to be an actionLook people, I've read some of the reviews, and I think people miss the point of movies anymore. This movie was to tell a story of Marines, Soldiers, Corpsman, and Airman fighting an alien invasion. This movie was designed to be an action film, operative word ACTION. Was the story some amazing Shakespeare masterpiece? Not at all, but it's not supposed to be. The story carries the movie well enough, with logical story progression, and a very comforting lack of pointless scenes. You learn a little bit about some of the characters, their lives, who they are, and then BOOM - it hits the fan. Fairly, you only ever feel truly attached to one character, and there are some very emotional scenes in the movie, especially if you served in the military. There are some weak spots in the story, and even a few plot points directly ripped off from other movies, but overall the story is acceptable.
The CG and special effects in this movie are absolutely spectacular. The aliens move fluidly, never is overwhelming CG shoved in your face, and the CG is always on a real backdrop, and looks amazing. But the one thing that steals the show? The AMAZING sound for this movie. It sounds like a war, accurately portraying the deafening volume of explosions, gunfire, tank fire, everything. This is a war, and is sounds like it.
Overall, this movie has an acceptable story, with acceptable acting, amazing CG and special effects, and amazing sound. All the reviews I've read that are negative towards this movie are because it positively portrays the US military, and apparently that is unacceptable in a movie to those folks.… Expand

Most critics have bashed this movie with the all so famous statement "we have seen this before". Although a bit true obviously the catch in this movie is not the "Oh my what a great new concept" it is the presentation that sets this movie aside from the rest. Similar to Avatar which is basically Dances with Wolves or Pocahontas but because of its presentation (and of course the name James Cameron) it became the biggest box office hit. Battle L.A is fantastic the Cinematography is great , one thing i thought was new and innovative was that the Aliens acted much like humans which not many, or if any, movies do. The ending although classic really kept me guessing i thought it would end one classic way but it didn't, it really had me wondering what would happen next. This movie is not for people who hate action, guns, or Aliens. But if you love one or all of these i would highly recommend this movie. On a last note the only reason i did not give it a 10 was because well not many movies are perfect, its really just too fan boyish to give it a straight up 10.… Expand

There were a few too many characters, but most of them get killed off before it becomes too much of a problem. My thing was that this was probably the closest video game movie I've ever seen. You start out in a street shootout, then shootout in/around the police station, then a driving section, stealth section to take down the drone, a big bridge battle where the enemy brings out a big gun machine/boss character, then another driving section, another stealth section, then a survival section where you try and stay alive until the missile hits including another boss mech, and finally the big push where they rush the enemy. It was almost eerie. My biggest problem was the pacing. Since the battles are so hectic and cluttered, it really feels long. But what I loved most about it was the character evolution that happens with Eckhart. The Sergeant is put through a major catastrophe and through it he realizes that despite his previous failures he still belongs in the Marines. If you look for it, there's a personal story in here. But all in all, a very good movie.… Expand

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. The critics were kind of negative and I was expecting another dissapointing sci-fi movie... but it was much better than I expected... it was a little gung-ho marines, but that's ok in the contextI was pleasantly surprised with this movie. One of the problems with these alien invasion films is the crazy concept that somehow the aliens being 100s of 1000s of years advanced can still get their butts kicked by humans. I put off seeing this film because of the low score (and maybe because I was seeing enough disaster on TV )but, a little bored yesterday i went .

A couple parts were laughable but overall it was way better than I expected. If you like disaster films and sci-fi like me, i think you will find battle LA entertaining and are likely to find yourself gripping the armrests a little more than you planned.… Expand

This movie is incredible! Went to see it opening day and was amazed how much they did with less than $100 budget. The score was great portraying the emotions and sense of a warzone. For the most part it's executed excellently.
There's a few parts where the "humanity" of the soldiers is supposed to matter but doesn't detract from the presentation of a battle squad at all.

Equipment & execution are presented well & you feel like you're right in the squad... you don't know everything or what's going to happen at all. The 4th wall is behind you not in front of you for this movie.
This is 10 times the movie "Monsters" is yet it's being panned by critics because of it's "lack" of story.
Maybe if this had been "made in a basement" like "Monsters" supposedly was it'd be winning awards too.
As it is "Monsters" didn't deserve any credit... I've met worse monsters working my retail job... while the aliens in Battle: LA feel just like they're supposed too... ALIEN.… Expand

Eckhart gives an emotional performance in a few smartly placed scenes which help with the pacing of such a tense, fast action film. All in all, the best movie I've seen in two years. Entertaining, and far from boring, and it has enough originality to keep you on your seat the whole way through.… Expand

This is a mindless, thrilling action movie. Anyone looking for more from this movie will probably be disappoint. However, Arnold made a career out of just this type of movie.

My advice: Don't overthink it. Just enjoy.

Great action/war/science fiction movie. As a Vet. I actually felt some of the old anxieties that the actors were trying to recreate. What I liked about the enemy is that they weren't some uber over powered force whoopin our tail, like in that awful movie Independence Day... They were advanced, it was up to them to find a weakness...
The action was about 95% of the movie. For an action/sci-fi movie, it's a 10, beacause it kept me entertained. I am not looking for an oscar winner, I went to this movie for action and it delivered 100%. Go see it on the big screen if you can!… Expand

This is the most fun I've hadCheese-Fest Averted...B:LA LOTSA Fun! I was worried of walking into a cheesefest going into Battle:LA, but walking out I'd say that the just-got-off-a-great roller-coaster grin on my face pretty much said it all! This is the most fun I've had watching a movie in years. Simply put, B:LA is Black Hawk Down meets Hurt Locker meets Independence Day; the movie contains a whole lot of Marine Hoo-Rah and just the right splash of (believe it or not) "eye-welling" tender moments. I have to note that while the acting overall was not Academy Award winning, B:LA did avoid becoming cheesy. It came close on one or two occasions, but managed to come back from the Cheddar precipice. Of note, Aaron Eckhart carries the movie taking a story that might merely have been outlandish and making it believable, and frightening. Even Michele Rodriquez, one of Hollywood's lesser talented and most stereotyped actresses, brought a bit of sensitivity to her role. Visuals are state of the art, and the score was just right in both the moments of high action and moments of tenderness completing the roller-coaster ride. Kudos to B:LA--bringing Sci Fi back...sorry Avatar.… Expand

Good action. Not a lot of story/plot. If you liked blackhawk down you will enjoy this movie. While I think skyline got a bad rap, this movie was the better of the two.

It's not very often that you get a pure action flick nowadays. This movie is very real in that I can see the marines doing exactly something like this if a similar situation came up. If your expecting the next space odyssey 2001 or sci fi epic, you are looking in the wrong place. but if you are coming to see a good,action packed film with what i said above, then you have found your film. I enjoyed it, and i would not mind spending another 12 dollars to see it again. Blu Ray here we come. Battle LA is well worth it.… Expand

I just can't believe the low criticisms, why cant anyone enjoy a movie that is created by someone other then the hero billion dollar directors. This movie competes! This movie competes and delivers xcept for 5 minutes in the middle i could have done without. If this movie had named like speilberg , bay, or Abrams in the credits, you all would have given it high scores. Shame on all you low baller critics, the ones paid off, and the main stream name droppers for ignoring the thrill of this movie. I watched it twice so far, my wife as well, and plan on purchasing the bluray which I don't often do. It will sit beside Lost, star trek, star wars, WITH PRIDE!… Expand

If you are looking to see a movie with lots of explosions, as I occasionally do, this is a good flick for you. I also like alien movies, so this was a must see. It dragged occasionally, but my ADD mind was entirely entertained.

This was a very good video, just one thing, it showed too much fantasy that many people in my group did not find amusing, it was really good for people who are very very into things in outer space but not alot of people are like that.
