its a great movie and its one of my favorite versions of Gotham in general in fact how Gotham is portrayed is the main reason I love this movie as great as Keaton and Nicholson are

Unlike the timeless Batman Returns this one is more dated and rough looking. That being said this has plenty of cool Batman moments and lots of fun Joker scenes. Probably one of my favorite Batman movies of all time, Burton did an incredible job with this film and bringing "The Gotham Knight" to the big screen. It also can't be understated how good Michael Keaton is as Bruce Wayne and Batman, he really plays both sides incredibly well despite being known as a man of comedy at the time of accepting the role. Jack Nicholson was just incredible as well, though his Joker is more of a gangster gone mad than a truly unhinged clown as you might know Heath Ledger's iconic performance or Mark Hamill's adaption of the character. The CGI and special effects obviously don't age well but even then, Batman is a classic.… Expand

A really fun experience. While it fails to really capture the character of Batman, Nicholson's performance makes this film incredibly engaging. Keaton also gives an excellent performance.

Pretty great movie with some amazing set pieces and scenes. Batmobile reveal, Batman crashing through the ceiling window and the final showdown on top of the gigantic cathedral are as iconic as it gets.

The only reason why I didn't give this a 10, was that the film itself is a bit too long. But putting that discrepancy aside, this is still a solid and sophisticated film, that is undoubtedly one of Tim Burton's better film efforts along with Edward Scissorhands and Corpse Bride.

The cinematography was spellbinding. The view of Gotham City from the air was brilliantly shot and very well realised. The music by Danny Elfman perfectly matched the cinematography, as that was outstanding. I also liked the mixture of darkness and tragedy wrought into the characters, as is so typical of Burton.

As for the acting, that was equally outstanding. I couldn't think of a better cast for this type of film. Michael Keaten was suitably brooding as Batman, and Kim Basinger matched him wonderfully in an innocent but sophisticated role as Vicki Vale. However, it is Jack Nicolson's mind-blowing performance as the rather sadistic joker that holds this film together. If I have to decide who was better as the joker between Jack Nicolson and Heath Ledger, it would be an extremely close call, but Jack Nicolson for me. He was both scary and comical, which reminded me of Tim Curry's(who was 2nd choice for the role of the Joker) Pennywise in It.

The direction by Burton was tight, and he assured us that the high-tension of this film rarely slipped. In conclusion, a must-see if you love sophisticated and dark films, with a touch of edge, because this film has plenty of that. 9.5/10 Bethany Cox… Expand

This movie is the best Batman solo movie so far. Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nelson as the Joker shine. The film is very loyal to the originals and the characters are excellent. This was for a long time the definitive Batman movie until “The Dark Knight” took the crown. It was dark, matured and had a good cast atop on director Tim Burton. Strangely it was the first Batman movie since “Batman The Movie” from 1966 withThis was for a long time the definitive Batman movie until “The Dark Knight” took the crown. It was dark, matured and had a good cast atop on director Tim Burton. Strangely it was the first Batman movie since “Batman The Movie” from 1966 with Adam West. Compared to the lighter and humorous setting of the 1966 movie this is much darker and a grim representation of Gotham City, Batman and society. I don't think I need to introduce Batman as anybody has heard of him even people who never read the comics. He is probably the most famous superhero and also commercially successful. This movie does tell the beginnings of Batman and the Joker with all struggles. Batman is just a rumor at the beginning and the Joker just Jack Napier a criminal on his way to the top of the food chain. The story works well for its genre while the characters and visuals enhance the experience. I should also say that this movie did not shy away from showing some drastic things for its time and age rating. I was impressed by this and a bit shocked back then. The characters did their best and Michael Keaton was a surprisingly good Batman aka Bruce Wayne. I did not think he could pull this off but he surprised me positively. As fun fact Bill Murray was a candidate for this role too and this would be the stuff of legends ;-). Many say Batmans strength is the best villains gallery in fiction and I agree. It is only natural to pick the Joker for this. Jack Nicholson is just amazing as Joker / Jack Napier. He is crazy, scary and insanely intimidating. He was the definitive Joker for a long time too and I can even understand those who still think he is the best. Then we have Viki Vale who is a photographer who is drawn into the struggles when she does an investigation about a rumor of a crime fighter in a bat costume. She delivers a good performance and I was invested in her character. Other than those I always love to see Billy Dee Williams and Michael Gough is a good Alfred Pennyworth. Side note: Alfred is probably the greatest bad ass in the Batman family. Just look up the one time he beat up Superman or escaped captivity with Bane who immediately recolonized his potential (Both examples are no jokes and really happened). In total we got a good cast and well done performance by genre standards. Jack Nicholson's performance was quite famous and left an impact here. Presentation wise the movie creates a dark atmosphere. Gotham City is a grim place, run down and a fine mixture of former greatness and decay. The costumes and practical effects work well. The Joker make up / mask alone is incredibly good. I must praise Tim Burton here as director. He made a really good movie with a clear vision. Of cause Danny Elfman made a good soundtrack that enhances the atmosphere and still works well. The rest was history as this movie was financially successful, impressed fans and most critiques and laid the foundation for the next movies. Overall I think this movie holds up well enough to recommend it. The Dark Knight took the crown but this was the gold standard before.… Expand

This was the first big budget Hollywood production of a live-action Batman movie not including the serial from the 1940’s or the campy movie from the 1960’s starring Adam West. It is presented as a darker story than the original comic series, as the Batman comics were starting to explore more mature themes in the 1970’s and 1980’s with graphic novels such as The Killling Joke and The Dark Knight Returns. The film is set in the fictional Gotham city, which is constructed using visual effects for the film. The city is a cool setting, with gothic architecture and towering skyscrapers and bustling city life with traffic, hookers and panhandlers. There is a good tone-setting scene at the start of movie where Batman confronts a couple of thugs who mug a family in a sketchy part of town. At the start of the movie, Batman is a mysterious vigilante who little is known about and kind of seen as a urban legend. He hasn’t started his relationship with Commissioner Gordon yet. Beautiful blonde photographer meets billionaire playboy and philanthropist owner of Wayne Enterprises Bruce Wayne at a party at Bruce’s mansion and tells him she is trying to get pictures of Batman for the Gotham Times. She and Bruce start dating and sleep together, little does she know that he is the caped crusader himself. Meanwhile, mobster Jack Napier, a wise-cracking goon who is having an affair with Mafia Boss Grissom’s young mistress is set up to break into Axis Chemicals, a factory that has ties to the mob, just to be confronted by dirty cop Lieutenant Eckart and his police squad, based on Harvey Bullock from the comics. Napier kills Eckart and almost manages to escape, but is apprehended by Batman who ends up making him fall into a vat of chemicals or acid although he tries to save Napier. Napier survives this and is left at a cheap emergency clinic where the doctor does surgery on him to get rid of the damage done by the chemicals. The procedure was done so poorly that it result in Jack Napier having something that looks like a permanent grin on his face. Also, now Jack’s hair is green, his lips are ruby red, and his skin is bleached white. He looks like a clown. In despair after he sees his reflection, Napier begins to laugh maniacally in a chilling scene at the clinic and leaves to cause mayhem. He starts calling himself the Joker, kills Boss Grissom, and takes over the mob. Joker utilizes weaponized clown props such as an electrocuting joy buzzer, an acid spraying flower, a spring-loaded boxing glove, and guns that he can stretch into hand-canons which also sometimes just eject a flag that says “bang.” The rest of the movie is pretty much just the Joker causing mayhem and Batman preventing it. Vicki Vale learns that Bruce Wayne is Batman by the end of the movie and she chooses to stay with him. Batman also learns that Jack Napier was the true killer of his parents when he was a child ( as opposed to Joe Chill like in the comics) and makes the connection to the Joker. He stops the Joker from attempting to gas the city streets with Smilex gas, which causes people to start laughing uncontrollably and die laughing and then kills the Joker. I liked the movie’s depictions of Bruce Wayne and his alter ego Batman, Joker, Alfred, and Vicki Vale. It was good how they actually established that the Joker was proficient in chemistry as he is in the comics, and the Joker was funny in the movie often making quips and saying punchlines. The Joker’s origin was similar to his origin in the comics as the Red Hood, although the film took some liberties in making him a mobster named “Jack Napier.” Sometimes in the comics, when Joker’s real name from his past is alluded to it is “Jack.” Michael Keaton’s performance as Batman is probably my favorite out of all the Batmen I have seen in the movies, as he doesn’t go too over the top but still manages to seem imposing. A classic, this might be my favorite Batman movie other than maybe The Dark Knight from 2008 which incidentally also stars the Joker.… Expand

A few days ago I watched Tim Burton’s 1989 classic take on the much loved "Caped Crusader" for the first time, and whilst it initially left me feeling a tad underwhelmed, I’ve only grown fonder of the film the more I’ve thought about it. IA few days ago I watched Tim Burton’s 1989 classic take on the much loved "Caped Crusader" for the first time, and whilst it initially left me feeling a tad underwhelmed, I’ve only grown fonder of the film the more I’ve thought about it. I would be lying if I said it didn’t have its fair share of problems; Jack Nicholson may be a fantastic joker but there are way to many scenes of him just scheming, the pacing is at times extremely poor and the final showdown feels like a failed attempt to replicate Roy vs Deckard in Blade Runner, however a great deal of these issues are negated for me by the unique and alluring atmosphere that Burton has created. The huge dystopian sets of Gotham City’s urban environments and the sickening green & brown colouring ooze with style, and accompanied by Danny Elfman’s chilling score they completely absorb me into the dark and demented metropolis that Batman is fighting to save.
Whilst some of the daytime sections can feel a bit dull without them, they are ultimately carried by the great performances from Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger and especially Michael Keaton, who is not only my favourite character in the film but my favourite iteration of Bruce Wayne period. Whilst most actors have gone for a more extreme approach to the character (Christian Bale is ultra charming and Ben Affleck is overly moody), Keaton feels far more human. Sure he’s a charming millionaire (or billionaire I don’t know), but especially when taking to people he can be a complete goof. There’s a perfect moment where he’s trying to tell Vicky that he’s the Batman, but he can’t seem to phrase it right and makes several attempts, before he’s conveniently saved by the entrance of the joker. Just moments later is possibly my favourite scene in the film where Bruce tries to intimidate the Joker by indicating that he’s going to lose through a short story, smashing some furniture and shouting “YOU WANNA GET NUTS!? Let’s get nuts...”. There’s something about Keaton’s delivery, and his chemistry with Nicholson that makes this moment so magical to me, and I really wish they had more interactions throughout the film. Jack Nicholson is also great, but unfortunately I do have a few minor gripes with his character. First of all revealing that he was Bruce’s parent’s killer seemed completely unnecessary to me. It made for slightly raised stakes but ultimately it just came out of nowhere and didn’t need to be included. Secondly, and you can say I’m nitpicking here, but I really don’t like how they choose to remove his makeup for some scenes. It just makes it hard for me to take his loud and jokey personality as seriously. Also, whilst Nicholson is fantastic there were one or two times when I thought he was just ever so slightly overacting. I’d say my biggest problem with the film is they it feels like Bruce Wayne/Batman is only a side character. It’s almost as if he has only half the screen time that the joker has, and in a film titled 'Batman' that is a little bit of a problem. In the end, despite all of its flaws I am a big fan of Tim Burtons Batman. It may not be as obviously brilliant as something like Nolan’s 'The Dark Knight' but in my opinion it is still one hell of a movie.… Expand

I've never been a massive fan of the older Batman movies and recently me & the mrs decided to rewatch all the Batmans and honestly, so far this is possibly the worst. OK technically it's a better film (obviously) than Batman & Robin, but this was just so slow and felt like a REALLY old movie. I mean, at this point Die Hard, Predator, Terminator & Aliens had all come out, but this feels like a film from 10 years before them. Some of the FX are laughable, it has that weird gun sound effect that no gun has ever sounded like that sounds like a 60's action film. It's not bad, it just feels sooo dated.… Expand

Batman for a 1989 film is cleverly directed and made and some of the film is pretty dark, some of the villains are laughable like Joker's troops because they seem a bit sloppy and not up to standards, as far as Jack Nicholson's role as the Joker was concerned he did a great job and certainly the best movie villain ever... Batman is full of great stunts, chases, shootings, fights, explosions and twists and turns that keep the viewer entertained from start to finish. The acting overall is pretty good and some scenes are hilarious like Bob the goon who works for the Joker because he gets asked by the Joker for his gun then the Joker kills him so some of the Joker's men are a bit dumb bit still a classic and a masterpiece of film making by Tim Burton... The action scenes are excellent and the story is okay so I've no negatives really to say about the movie because it's near perfect for me. The best Batman film ever made and that will never change.… Expand

Quite simply the best Batman movie ever made, the sequels were not great except Batman Forever which was pretty good.... Tim Burton's original batman movie made in 1989 mixes violence with humour which works. It's certainly watchable but not without its flaws. There is too much focus on the Joker, not enough on Batman. There really isn't much character building and not once do you feel Batman is in danger or that any of his opponents are a threatIt's certainly watchable but not without its flaws. Probably one of my favorite Batman movies of all time, Burton did an incredible job with this film and bringing "The Gotham Knight" to the big screen. It also can't be understated how good Michael Keaton is as Bruce Wayne and Batman, he really plays both sides incredibly well despite being known as a man of comedy at the time of accepting the role. Jack Nicholson was just incredible as well, though his Joker is more of a gangster gone mad than a truly unhinged clown as you might know Heath Ledger's iconic performance or Mark Hamill's adaption of the character. The CGI and special effects obviously don't age well and the films overall gothic tone is dark enough to make even Zack Snyder quiver in his boots. But even then, Batman is a classic.… Expand

Michael Keaton is the GOAT as an actor (the only one I know to pull off full ret**d) and Tim Burton nailed it which lots of movies are trying to imitate but never really pulled it off. This is the best Batman to date.

Burton's taken on the cape crusader of the Gotham city is much more practical and grounded than it claims to be. Don't get it wrong, it has its weak moments and it gets cheesy at times with its cheap gadgets and tacky physical sequences that is clearly off putting, but amidst all these outdated thrills lies a stunning performances, a performance so mesmerizing that it has the potential to carry off the entire movie. There is real ruggedness in here, mano-y-mano as Nicholson calls it, and it's that humane emotion that makes it more gritty and smart. The screenplay is tightly packed that keeps offering twists and turns in this cat and mouse chase until it grows mature and fiddles with character's emotions.

The conversations are pragmatic but the dialogues are cinematic, they demand attention through it especially Nicholson's ideologies that are expressed through monologues and one liners that may or may not crack you up but it surely is palpable to the bold decisions the character makes. It might be gullible, but it also keeps you thoroughly busy in its crime world, from fake advertisement to press news and from cutthroat politics to slick agendas that keeps flipping like a coin, it is immensely enthralling to encounter a good old protagonist-antagonist striking their horns on screen.

Aforementioned, Nicholson is the heartbeat of this case, he is hilarious, intriguing, impressive, at times predictable but not scary as he should have been. Keaton as Batman is over chewing stuff and other supporting cast fades away in front of Nicholson's cynical laugh. Burton needs to up his game whilst pulling off heist and explosions, the fighting sequences could have easily been convincing. Batman works as far as it is a political drama as soon as it starts paying its due to the comic book fans, it dips vigorously down.… Expand

This movie is the film adaptation of the comic-strip where Batman was born. But in this movie the actors weren't well, they simply failed to adapt to the way Tim Burton, a sui generis director, wanted the film.

In fact, in this film (and in the following sequels), Tim Burton has shown that knows nothing about comics, and his love for his personal way he understands cinema is greater than his ability to adapt comic strip for cinema. Merely copying one thing to another?! A film that is comic-strip is not a movie nor a comic-book! The interpretation of the characters is too stylized, the costumes are too unrealistic, the cinematography is too dark and the absurd scenarios are worthy of an Orwellian dystopia. Everything has been thought to refer the public to the comics and strengthen the dystopian character of the city where the story takes place. Thus, as in the comics, Batman is the product of reality where he lives: a good and noble man who uses the violence to brings justice where it fails, turning perversity against the perversity he fights. Still, it's a comic-book Batman, not a cinema Batman, and the film doesn't even tries to bridge's the gap between reality and comics, something that surely would make the film more interesting.

Nostalgia can be a very powerful thing. I admit that. This was the first VHS I ever owned as a child, and I remember it very fondly, even the preceding Warner Brothers ad starring Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. This was the first VHS I ever owned as a child, and I remember it very fondly, even the preceding Warner Brothers ad starring Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. I have re-watched Tim Burton's 1989 adaptation of Batman several times, and even after re-evaluating the film as an adult, I still believe it to be the best Batman film to date. I was too young to comprehend or care about the controversy surrounding the casting of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne, or Nicholson working out a deal regarding the movie's profits. I didn't care about any of that. And honestly, I still don't. This is simply one of my favorite comic book movies of all time that I rarely tire of watching. The tone is dark and brooding, which is a far cry from the campy Batman television show/movie that came before it, starring Adam West. The story is quite grim, and Gotham City is a bleak, crime-infested place that is visually accentuated with hues of black and grey, a lot of grey. Nicholson and Keaton play their parts very well, with Nicholson being the stand out as Joker. The supporting cast is also stellar, particularly Kim Basigner, as the determined photojournalist who is investigating Batman. The plot is straightforward, and the pace is good, if somewhat slow. But the action scenes are amazing, and are all accentuated with Danny Elfman's brilliant score, which sets the mood perfectly throughout the film. Director Tim Burton did an extraordinary job with this movie, and as terrific as his sequel Batman Returns is, Tim Burton's first attempt at Batman was his best. There's not much to dislike here. Even though Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy was better received critically and by fans, I never cared for it that much. For me, Batman 1989 is the only Batman movie I'll ever need.… Expand

Comme une bande dessinée en somme qui peut se permettre toutes les facéties qui lui passent par la tête... ou presque.

Il en résulte quelque chose de déconcertant mais de résolument original, car Gotham est une ville issue de l'imagination et à nulle autre semblable : architecture gothique, mélange d'ambiance entre années 80 et années 50 et bien entendu l'homme-chauve-souris dont l'avatar Bruce Wayne est étrangement à côté de la plaque, brillamment interprété par Michael Keaton. Un héros donc bien plus humain que les tentatives trop aseptisées de Christopher Nolan.

Quant au Joker, il se taille la part du lion et Jack Nicholson lui donne une épaisseur incomparable faite d'ironie, de drôlerie et de méchanceté gratuite... un cabotin irrécupérable, un "artiste"... et un vrai dingue !

Bien sûr, le personnage de Vicky Vale est important pour l'histoire et une plastique avantageuse est une qualité non négligeable mais Kim Basinger ne cesse de nous navrer d'un bout à l'autre et du début à la fin : cette nana, c'est une souffrance.

Heureusement, la musique tonitruante de Danny Elfman se plie avec un brio stupéfiant au délire ambiant, caricaturant juste ce qu'il faut ses nombreux accents héroïco-héroïques et suit les deux névropathes de près, alternant ironie et romance.

Les répliques d'une manière générale semblent tout droit sorties d'une série B (ou Z ?) comme si elles se parodiaient elles-mêmes : il faut entendre par exemple le couplet que sort le grand Jack Palance à l'autre Jack ou les interventions "télévisées" du Joker...

Malgré sa durée raisonnable, le film souffre encore d'un manque de rythme ici et là et son côté BD est finalement autant un atout qu'un boulet à traîner, car rien n'est vraiment "sérieux" ou réaliste. Un Batman pas croyable mais auquel on adhère pour tous ses excès, loin du balai dans le fion de nombre de super-héros.… Expand

While the modern day films have decided that doom, gloom, and Henry Cavill brooding, are the ways to make a successful Batman movie, Tim Burton's version embraces the crazy. As with all Burton films, it can be wildly over-the-top at times, but never ceases to entertain as Batman (Michael Keaton) squares off with the Joker and has sex with Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger). Go get 'em, champ.

Far more entertaining than Zack Snyder's slop, Tim Burton ensures that in portraying the Joker's madness, he never loses sight of the key to all action: FUN. And boy oh boy is this one fun. Gloriously 1980s in its approach to action and fight sequences, the film's special effects and choreography may be a bit stilted and unseemly by today's standards, but were more than good for the time. Plus, they feel very in line with the comic books. From the set pieces to the costumes to the dialogue, Tim Burton's Batman feels like a comic book and this is why the film is ultimately so fun. It knows none of it is too serious, so it has fun with an outrageous premise, plot, and scenarios, as it knows what it is: a summer blockbuster adapted from a comic book that is made to please. This, of course, is not to imply it is not dark. It is far darker than, say, Marvel movies nowadays. However, it stops well short of the grim nature of the new DC adaptations.

Michael Keaton does a very good job in the lead role as Bruce Wayne/Batman, but the real star is Jack Nicholson. Crazy Jack rears his head yet again and has a blast with the absolutely nutso Joker/Jack Napier. From hardcore gangster to gleeful murderer, Nicholson does a killer job capturing the Joker and bringing him to life. He has been upstaged in more recent times by Heath Ledger, but this does nothing to diminish Nicholson's turn as the famed comic book villain. The costume design of the Joker is also stellar. The same goes for Batman with both of their "outfits" being well crafted and, honestly, how I often view the characters. Along a similar line, the production design is also killer. The scene in which the Batplane rains hellfire on the Joker and the scene on the cathedral both highlight this look. Not cartoonish, but decidedly comic book, which is perfect for this type of film.

With solid dialogue, fun action, a compelling plot that does not pertain to blowing up planet Earth (oh boy a throwback to the good old days), and good acting, Tim Burton's Batman features all of the wackiness one might expect from a Burton film (especially in the portrayal of the Joker), but is simply an incredibly well done comic book film that captures the fun, atmosphere, and look of a comic book.… Expand

Jack Nicholson's performance is gloriously over the top, and he's playing the Joker so I'd say it was called for. He was clearly having a ball because I'm sure Tim Burton said "you-know what, Jack, just do whatever and we'll keep filming and see how that goes."

I really like the gothic aesthetic that Tim Burton brought to his version of Batman, the movie looks fantastic.

My love for this film is not purely bred from nostalgia (although that helps), it's also a really solid flick. Have you seen it recently? Go back and watch it, it holds up.… Expand

'Batman' is a movie that's seen many times, and while it certainly is a classic, it does have its flaws, mostly in the central characters.

The movie stars Jack Nicholson as the Joker, and Michael Keaton as the title character. Yes, it is'Batman' is a movie that's seen many times, and while it certainly is a classic, it does have its flaws, mostly in the central characters.

The movie stars Jack Nicholson as the Joker, and Michael Keaton as the title character. Yes, it is in that order as well. Directed by Tim Burton, the movie has his own unique style with colorful characters and a darker, gloomy tone to avoid the camp-style of the Adam West "Batman" from the 1960s.

The plot revolves around Batman trying to catch the Joker from injecting Gotham city with crime, and exposing the citizens to some Smile gas which incidentally transforms the people into what the Joker has become. The Joker became the crazy maniac that he is after he fell into a pool of acid which disfigures his face to form a permanent grin. Nicholson gives a great performance as the crazy Joker, but having seen the movie recently, it almost seems as if he might be over-acting his role. The loud, maniac laughs and the over-the-top delivery of some of his lines can seem a little problematic.

But this is in no way Nicholson's fault, like I said, he did a fantastic job in the role... Director Tim Burton has been known for animating his characters on screen. Not just with the pale face make-up, but possibly how he tells his actors to deliver their lines. A huge part of the Joker's performance is obviously influenced by Tim Burton's vision.

Michael Keaton is great as Bruce Wayne/Batman, but we don't delve that deep into his character. It has been said many times by other critics that this is Jack Nicholson's movie, and not Keaton's. This is true, we get more of a Joker origin story rather than the title character. This may be due to the fact that the screenplay, written by Sam Hamm and Warren Skaaren were so focused heavily on creating such an iconic villain, that they got lost in translation and forgot who the movie was for in the first place.

Other than this, 'Batman' is a visual treat, a thrilling adaptation of the Caped Crusader of Gotham city, it does feel a little jarring that we get a glimpse of Bruce's childhood/origin story almost half way through the movie, but, when you have fun with what Burton presents you with, it's hard to stay mad.

Overall, if you want a good Batman movie, this will deliver what you might want. The actors' performances outshine the overall story.… Expand

While not as good as the dark knight trilogy, this is still the batman movie fans have wanted, well in the 80"s. With a great cast, story, and entertainment, this is one batman fans should not miss.

Jack Nicholson's Joker may not compare to the legendary performance by Heath Ledger but Christian Bale's Batman (as good as he was) is nowhere near as good as Keaton's. I enjoyed this movie. But nevertheless, Michael Keaton nails it. It's difficult to imagine the guy who played Beetlejuice could nail a tormented hero like Batman but he does. And don't get me wrong, Nicholson's Joker is fun to watch- he's just a little just a bit over-the-top sometimes. Overall, a good film.… Expand

Batman is good. Its hard for me to love this movie given that I’ve seen the later and superior versions of Batman and have been spoiled by so many comic book movies but I appreciate for what it is. This comes from a time when comic book movies were not that common and if they did exist they weren’t taken as seriously as they are today. The fact that a dark comic book movie came out that was good was a big deal and the film did lay the groundwork for future comicbook movies and later versions of the character that I love specifically Batman: The Animated Series as well as the Nolan films. What makes this film entertaining are the characters primarily the Joker with Jack Nicholson giving an excellent performance. If this is your introduction to Batman you’ll probably love this movie but if not you won’t be blown away by it but it is still entertaining. Had this been my first time seeing Batman I would’ve probably really enjoyed it but instead its entertaining. As it is I enjoy the movie and appreciate what it did for comicbook movies.… Expand

I love this movie! It's the best one in the whole franchise and a true classic. The role as Batman was tailor made for Michael Keaton he's just perfect as Bruce Wayne. This is also by far the best superhero-villain relationship I've seen in a comic book movie, first of all Joker killed Batman's parents, if that doesn't make him his enemy than I don't know what will. The soundtrack is amazing and the last third of the movie is definitely the best part of the movie, you see the Batmobile, you see the Batwing, you see Joker, and Batman kicking ass. 10/10… Expand

So I watched this the other night having never seen the original batman movie by Tim Burton. I heard arguments from people that it was better than the Dark Knight Trilogy created by Christopher Nolan. Um....might be one of the worst incarnations of the Caped Crusader ever made. First off, there is a major problem with michael keaton as batman. This fool was wearing glasses as bruce wayne, had kinda of curly hair and had absolutely no suave of any kind. I was trying to figure out if this guy was supposed to be a grown up peter parker or something instead of bruce wayne. But the bigger problem is Jack Nicholson as the Joker. You friken kidding me? Joker has always bean kinda of lean and skinny. Nicholson had too broad of shoulders to sell as the Joker. Didn't have the voice, didn't have the look, and minimized the craziness of the Joker. And the biggest flaw in the whole movie was that they changed Batmans orgin story of who killed his parents. A common thug kills his parents in the allyway. But not in this movie. Instead it was friken Joker when he was younger. Joker? Bullcrap man. And batman doesn't realize until near the end of the movie. The man who killed my parents was the Joker! Okay Tim Burton. Thanks for killing my fascination with batman.… Expand

Although there are some ridiculous sets, such as three mile high buildings and such, the acting is good, with great villains. Nicholson does one of his better performances to date.

This is the comic book movie at it's best, realistic enough but sticking to it's roots of the impossible. Keaton's performance remains to be the best Batman. Jack Nicholson gives us performance as the Joker, and with it is his dark and morbid sense of humour that appeals to me, I find him absolutely hilarious. The visuals and music fit perfectly together and to a visual artist like it's just perfect. What really works for this movie is that Batman's character is kept more of a mystery and because of that it's a better performance, and the Joker's story we learn the details of and is written and performed perfectly. Tim Burton's greatest film and one of my all time favourites.… Expand

The first time that Batman is seen on screen in this way leads to a darkly funny comic book film. Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson give good performances and Tim Burton continued a solid early career.

Jack Nicholson as the Joker was weird. I didn't like him. I wasn't a big fan of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne or Batman. Vicki Vale annoyed the hell out of me. I REALLY did not like the music by Prince. The part where Batman killed the thug really bothered me and yes, I know that Batman has killed people before, but that was a long time ago. And then there was the part where Joker shot down the Batwing with a bullet. A bullet. Really? I liked the music by Danny Elfman and I liked Alfred, but other than that I can't think of other things I liked about this movie. I didn't like the movie, but I didn't dislike it.… Expand
