While some of the apparitions and strange events seem mystical or paranormal in nature, others are very real, especially when residents begin experiencing damage to property and unexplained deaths. Throw in the activities of sport hunters, a crooked politician and a wanted fugitive, and you've got quite a mix of volatility that's unveiled ever so meticulously and gradually in order to retain viewer interest by preserving the mystery as long as possible. The film's excellent cinematography, splashes of campy humor and classic good vs. evil narrative elements make for an entertaining couple of hours. Be forewarned, though, that the picture is quite violent at times, but it never becomes wantonly gratuitous outside its context (even though sensitive viewers may wish to take a pass). Available for first run online streaming, this Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize winner is a grand old time at the show, even virtually. Expand

Bacurau's definitely an unusual film, but for me it wasn't a good one. Ultimately it came down to the story, which although initially interesting then takes a bizarre turn that ultimately just felt daft.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bacurau is garbage. In the world of garbage, Bacurau is perhaps a full diaper, but long, well disembodied from any child loved enough to render tolerable handling the hefty plastic to chuck it in the heap of other worthless movies. Signifying the true treachery of the worst kind of digital filmmaking, this type of bone-chillingly, nauseating color photography and denuded mise en scene makes point-and-shoot feel like a bygone golden age. In writing that Bacurau "doesn't quite work in traditional genre-movie terms," why does the critic for "Variety" even give the movie the credit of "densely multilayered subtext"? This movie presents sociopolitical allegory in the same class as mimicking one's interlocutor in classic oafish "dumb voice." Bacurau isn't unforgivable for being poor, but for how stupidly and insultingly it goes about being so poor. There isn't a single involving frame in the movie. That a child walks into an ominous field at night on a dare doesn't create an ounce of tension or even interest in the fact that this kid is an obvious sitting duck for bloodthirsty invaders -- because the "satirical" characterizations up to this point have been so artless, toothless, asinine, and gross that the scene plays like a snuff film. Likewise, the scene of the fleeing old couple getting mowed down by machine guns elicits the same anti-scene sense, as innocent victim after innocent victim gets torn apart in order to set up the obvious, lazily self-justified revenge scenario for even further dumb, pointlessly done violence.

I really can't stress how dumb and lifeless this movie is. When the old couple is mowed down in a scene you boredly see coming but are forced to sit through, the killers say "Let's **** which they proceed to do as they flip off the drone watching them. "Must see!" indeed. I mean, how many 12-year-olds do you know who can write something of THAT satiric caliber!

These exceedingly stupid moments ask a lot of us and yet are played and concocted with such a jadedly hands-off sense of commentary. The directors seem to wish to offer some authoritative satire but instead indulge in disgusting junk to justify honoring their slahser mentors. Though, if you look at these reviews, I can see why they'd think that, these days, merely wanting to homage something junky pretty much passes for legitimate satire anyway.

Other critics have written that Bacurau doesn't hold up under oddly shifting tones. But this movie is entirely toneless, so what's to shift? Meanwhile, the adulation for Bacurau is a disturbing sign that this kind of vacuous bilge is here to stay as long as a movie purports to have references, even if the effect of its sources is replaced with anti-movie airlessness.

Soon, the plot -- well, "soon" isn't true... nothing happens in Bacurau without a redundancy somehow at once incredibly thick and yet computer-software-vacant... But gradually, the movie grows into the blown-off-heads extravaganza that it sat lifelessly in a chair promising to become, really leaving one wondering how anyone has ever taken joy in making, let alone seeing, a movie in the first place.

obra prima sem precedentes. infelizmente o brasileiro tá tão acostumado com a produção norte-americana que automaticamente coloca defeito em tudo do seu próprio país. direção magistral do kleber, atuações memoráveis, enfim, 10/10.

I like Bacurao and it's people and you can't help but root for them when everything, everyone, and everywhere else has not only forsaken it, but stripped it and tried to sell it to the highest bidder. There's nothing really of value in Bacurau, but it's honor, and it satisfyingly defends it with extreme prejudice. I Iike this place.

All that said, where it fails is its villains. They are stupid and nonsensical, and that hurts the film. We never really get any depth for them. We don't have a clue why they do what they do. It just makes them comical and not in a good way.
