Sure, it's not the greatest film ever, but still it's a very nice introduction to the Assassin's Creed franchise for those who haven't played the games. It's got a nice balance of past/present footage. The parkour and combat is great, the cast features 3 great lead actors (Jeremy Irons, Marion Cotillard, Michael Fassbender) and Fassbender easily steals the show.

I do have to say the film has a few weak points, though. The film focuses on Callum/Fassbender so much but barely explains the series' lore which is common knowledge to gamers, the ancient civilization is merely mentioned in one sentence and then forgotten, and the history lesson is kept to an absolute minimum. It would have been great to have a bit more of all those things in the final movie.

I hope there is a sequel that builds upon the first movie while correcting its flaws.

It isn't the best movie out there, but it's actually pretty decent and is the best video game movie out there, but at the same time, there isn't really much competition.

The movie is decent. I wouldn't say it's "great," but it's decent. Of course, this is coming from someone who has never been a huge fan of the franchise, so I don't have a bias against the movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review will contain minor spoilers about elements of the story and movie but will not spoil the story itself.

There are positives and negatives to this movie as one would assume, there are with any movie. I had to create an account to defend the movie because I feel it gets a bad wrap even though it's a good start for Ubisoft deciding to take one of it's biggest franchises and go to the big screen with it. Let's start with what they missed then we'll end with what they did good

For starters, the way they portray the animus in the movie is not what I would have expected or wanted. As the trailer shows they portray him in this large machine which has never appeared in any of the games. I could look past this if the movie didn't remind you multiple times each fight scene in the animus that he is strapped to some machine on the outside. Here comes a fight scene, going good and quick 2 second cut to show he's still in, more fight, cut to machine, more fight, cut to machine, etc. It's very annoying and after the first fight in the animus we wouldn't have to see it again because we understand he moves in life while in the simulation.

Second, they take a lot of time outside the animus to explain the story and plot so the viewer knows what it's about, for seasoned players of the franchise we all know what it's about but for a newcomer to it they need the story, it's a necessity but it's still a little annoying that the story has to be re-told again, hopefully it wont be that way in the second film (I'm assuming they will make another).

Third, honestly, I with the movie was a bit longer, I think they wont need it with more iterations but more time could have meant more animus time to see the Spanish inquisition and fight scenes. Now let's do the positives because there is a lot this movie does well

First off the fight scenes are amazing, very well choreographed. The sword fighting, the arrows flying, the throwing knifes in mid-air the rooftop jumps. Oh baby, it is the best! It is EXACTLY what the franchise is about and they really nailed it. From the build up as the assassin's creep through the crowd to the final sword blow you keep your eyes on it for every second and I love that. Second, the characters are likeable and they don't take away from the movie. There's friendly banter in the movie which will give you a chuckle or laugh but it's not a comedy and there isn't an excessive amount of it which is good that they kept to the serious tones of the movie.

Third, the weapons they all use are exactly what you'd find in the assassin's creed universe which is great because all those cool kill moves you do in game you get to see on film which makes the movie flow with the game franchise and likewise the assassin's creed universe. Fourth, they portrayed the bleeding effect very well, it's very much like what you'd find in one of the games. Lastly, the movie ends just like one of the games would with a great climactic ending and that helps to finish the movie off greatly.

Overall, it is a good movie, not bad at all for the first go, there's a lot of story build up for people who are not familiar with the franchise and I understand and hope it will change in the future movies. But they got many thing right with the movie like the fight scenes that are just awesome to watch. Overall it's a 7.5/10 for me. Can't wait to see how the next one will go.

From someone who played the very first game, familiar and understand the setting and lore, this movie does the job and fit into this universe. A grand adventure in history + demonstrating the meaning of Creed and indeed the best videogame movie ever made. Well to the script it wasn't ideal, the only shortcoming, because mainly it Dives more into the very deep concept and notion of AC(includes the ancestor and descendant) Serves as a first chapter and extension of this universe, possible sequel could rectify minor problems it had. This movie truly is a decent one, Pay Attention to Every Frame Actions + dialogues, With a cast you could only find in classical theatre, they're delivering their very best.
The Only thing I don't like is the interactive animus, Compare to the one in this movie I prefer that immersive animus in the game.
Your view about this movie highly depends on your first impression of Assassin's Creed, Nobody likes a change but this movie is faithful to this world depite its flaws whether you like it or hate it. Even the Original Creative Director agrees on this movie. If you familiar with Past+Present and some elements you will certainly enjoy and appreciate this movie but if you only cares about the past for gaming experience don't watch it and especially for the people who don't like this genre and wants only popcorn Go spend your time elsewhere!
WELCOME TO PEOPLE WHO WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS WORLD.
In my opinion Videogames that has cinematic quality can be adapted but How many people can accept this? this question is the key to Videogame movies success and if this has a solution then there's a way to break the curse. I would give it 8 if the ending fade into black before the assassination.
Most importantly a movie about Assassins and Templars for not reaching 2hrs on the big screen was wasted, A sequel is badly need it! Nada es verdad, todo está permitido.

The problem is not only that the length of the modern part is more than that of the ancient part, but also that the modern part has more details than that of the ancient part. If the length of a movie that distinguishes between story and action is not grasped properly, it will be more elegant and more ideal In fact, Assassin's Creed movies in this state will be like the process of a game in which players can feel and explore the fun of story based on the action. The material has little relevance other than to encourage Callum Lynch's hatred for his father and who his parents were. Ultimately, this was poorly scripted and ends up forcing the movie to have to win an audience back instead of gaining their interest from the first moments of the movie. However, as bad of a start as it was, Assassin's Creed does eventually gain traction. Fassbender and Rampling have heavy presence while on-screen, achoring this film when knives aren't being slashed across human bodies. I went from being very disinterested to intrigued over the course of the first half of the movie, before being very interested in how it would all come to a close. The action in Assassin's Creed is fantastic, carrying great momentum from each encounter to the next. The video game's protagonist's use of parkour and mixed martial arts translates extremely well to the big screen. If you're just here for the awesome fight scenes, you won't leave disappointed. When the dust settles, Kurzel's adaptation of Assassin's Creed starts to become fun and thrilling but then the film ends with more sweeping panoramic shots - the movie is full of them and they start to get a little lame. There are talks about converting this to the small screen. That might be best, but getting the cast to remain would probably be impossible without a considerable budget. For this franchise to succeed, big screen or small screen, it will take iron-clad screenwriting and a more careful investigation of the source material that can be fed to audiences slower. The movie moves too fast and the Animus moments, while extremely cool and so well threaded together with the modern day experience of Lynch, don't take the opportunity to further the story very well. Still, if there is to be more of Assassin's Creed in the movie or TV world, I will be happy to give it the benefit of the doubt. There is a lot that can go right. It's too bad the studio and those overseeing this first adaptation didn't do more to stick the landing on the first go-round. Assassin's Creed could have been magnificent. Expand

But still not as bad as some people make it out to be. The film's biggest flaw is that you don't get emotionally attached to a single character in it. I honestly didn't care if anyone in the movie died. So much of the movie is spent wasted on the wrong things. Instead of building a solid story and getting you to like a few of the characters, it's mostly just action set-piece after action set-piece with little to no explanation or build-up. Why does Hollywood not just follow the building blocks set out by the stories in the actual games? The reason so many of these games are so popular is because of their stories and the way they are set out. Not because of the repetitive action sequences in them. The sooner the film industry understands that, the sooner videogame adaptations will make a killing at the box office. Expand

Despite some fine looking action none of it is involving. Plus the video games pulls you into the 13th Century more than this movie does. When Callum (Michael Fassbender) gets transported into the life of his ancestor, we mostly get all action and no character development. There's the making of a good video game based movie for once. Except there's just not enough to the story to make you care about what's going on or the characters. Expand

first thing i noticed going into the movie a little detail that i liked was that Ubisoft's logo was actually shown as if its a movie company which was good the good things about the movie were the good moments were when Michael Fassbender was viewing the memories of his ancestor assassin.

One bad thing that ruined the immersion of the movie for me were the moments when the action would cut in and out from past to present to the point where 3/4 of the movie was in the present making it not feel like a very assassiny movie for me.

By itself it's a perfectly good action-ish movie that anyone can enjoy, but don't expect an 10/10 in any aspect, hence my 6 rating which is good. The creators of the film failed to do 1 of 2 things that were highly anticipated with the making of this video game series into film: 1) An alt-historical look at Spain or any other exotic location in time. OR 2) An action packed look at an Assassin's life in the time of said 'memory'.
It failed to do both of those, which is the only reason people play the games. Instead they brought the story to the 'real world', the least interesting part of the series. The assassins weren't really developed in the dream memory nor real life. It was mostly about the main character and no one else, which made it feel more closed off and very separated from the world. To not go into a ramble here, The biggest problem of this movie was that it didn't really give us anything that the fans nor anyone wanting a block buster were expecting. Don't watch this expecting that, it'll only disappoint you, instead watch it as yet another action flick and enjoy the cheesy plot of good vs evil and the bad one liners.

When Assassin's Creed was in the lead up to its release, it certainly seemed the film was primed to break the video game adaptation curse. Re-teaming Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard with director Justin Kurzel after the trioWhen Assassin's Creed was in the lead up to its release, it certainly seemed the film was primed to break the video game adaptation curse. Re-teaming Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard with director Justin Kurzel after the trio collaborated on 2015's Macbeth, it seemed a match made in heaven. One of the best films of 2015, Macbeth is so good that I loved it in spite of the stream having Chinese subtitles, which only worsened the fact that all of the characters had thick Scottish accents while spitting out Shakespearean English. It was hell, but a beautiful one at that. Assassin's Creed further establishes Kurzel as a brilliant visual director, but Assassin's Creed just seems to clunk along far too often and, as a result, its climax lacks the requisite power to make it all work together.

Based on the greatly popular video game series of the same name, Assassin's Creed introduces the concept of the Animus. Transporting its occupant to the past life of a direct ancestor, the device is being used by Sofia (Marion Cotillard) and her father Alan (Jeremy Irons). Attempting to find the Apple of Eden - in which the seeds of mankind's first disobedience were sown and where the key to controlling humanity's free-will is said to exist - the two find men and women with a link to a member of the Assassin's Creed, a group of assassins sworn to defend the Apple. By putting them into the Animus, the men and women experience events as seen and performed by their ancestors, which can lead to clues as to where the Apple is located. However, with Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender), they have their best opportunity. A direct relative of an assassin named Aguilar who operated in 1492 during the Spanish inquisition, he was the last man known to have possessed the Apple of Eden. Now, it is up to Callum to find out where he hid the apple. However, with Alan working for the Templars - the group that orchestrated the Inquisition and still seeks to control humanity - Callum and the other assassins must try to use their knowledge of where the Apple is to try and prevent the Templar from being able to use it against humanity. In other words, this film is complex.

Where it falters the worst, however, is the scenes in the modern day. Compared to the exciting sequences in 1492 Spain, the scenes in the modern day suffer from being both too long and too rushed. Dialogue, especially what is written for Moussa (Michael K. Williams), is always clunky. Scenes are either too exposition heavy and, thus, drag or they are too short and never really explain what is going on. For example, when the inmates revolt against Sofia and Alan while Callum is in the Animus, it is unclear throughout the sequence what is happening with no moment where they seem to plan it all out together. Instead, they are shown to be trying to kill Callum only to then fall in line and take orders from him shortly after. Aside from a brief bridge scene with his father Joseph (Brendan Gleeson), there is no moment where we see them all decide to revolt and then work with Callum. It is very odd and shows how underwritten some parts of the film are, compared to how overwritten moments of exposition are.

Where the film's rushed nature really hurts it is in the climax of the film. With the Templars possessing the Apple immediately after Callum revealed where it was, the scene of them finding the Apple is about ten seconds long. The whole film is about them to finding the Apple and when they finally get their hands on the thing, the film opts to just rush through everything leaving the film itself feeling abrupt, only worsened by its ending that is equally rushed and left open for a sequel. With the Templars celebrating their success and the Assassins interrupting, the scene of Callum and Alan in their final moment together happens in two seconds and lacks any sense of power or presence. It just happens and everybody moves on without reacting to what they just witnessed. The abrupt ending immediately after only worsens this with the film lacking a satisfactory ending in the name of setting up a sequel.

Yet, Assassin's Creed practically saves itself with the scenes in the Inquisition. Unique, engaging, and steeped in mythology, the scenes are absolutely excellent from a story perspective. Action-wise, the scenes feature the film's greatest fight choreography with an excellent usage of hand-to-hand combat, sword fighting, and improvisation with nearby elements on the set. Each fight scene is excellently staged and shows Kurzel's adeptness with battle scenes, as he had previously demonstrated in his debut, Macbeth. Both films really crescendo with their gorgeous action sequences and the scenes in this film nearly make up for the lack of power and intrigue found in the moments set in the modern day.

I thought the animus was creative in the way they did it but it did raise a few questions. Like what's it look like when he runs. I thought the action scenes for the most part entertaining. The stunt work was extremely impressive and the costume design. Overall If you are a assassins creed gamer id say watch it if not I can see you having a hard time liking it. I enjoyed it for what it was. Expand

Another video-game adaptation that fails to provide an interesting story, Assassin's Creed doesn't live up to its incredible hype, and lacks the incredible action sequences and emotional depth that would make it worth remembering.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Assassins creed is a pretty straightforward franchise. Its about historical conflicts, and cool dudes that run around taking out major targets whilst doing awesome parkour. I'm not a huge fan of the games (I've only ever played IV) but as someone who is into history, I was pretty stoked for this movie. On top of that, Assassins Creed is also a reunion For Justin Kurzel, Michael Fassbender, and Marion Cotillard; who all worked on the most recent version of Macbeth, which I absolutely loved. My expectations for this movie were high. So high, in fact, that I disregarded the overwhelming onslaught of hate that came in the wake of the movie's early screenings. Boy, was I wrong.

Justin Kurzel is a great director. He has a gift in his manipulation of fog, dust, and light. He did great things in Macbeth, especially with the final confrontation, and he does similarly great things here...at least when the screenplay permits it. The setting that I had most looked forward to; fifteenth century Spain, at the height of the inquisition, barely gets 30 minutes of screen time, if that. The ferocious beauty that Kurzel's visual style brings to the table is never given time to become the prepossessing masterpiece I know it could have become. The epic acrobatics, tense sequences of martial arts combat, and exotic weaponry scarcely sink in before the viewers, just like Callum Lynch, are jerked back to a monotone and boring laboratory, that serves as the setting for most of the movie.

At one point in the film, when the villainous Templar priest finally lays his oppressive hands on the apple of Eden, the movie's sought after artifact, Aguilar, and his Assassin partner leap down into a cloud of grey smoke, emerging from the shadows here, and there, laying absolute waste to the Templar. This is a moment of cinematic triumph, and Kurzel ought to be pleased. Next however, as Aguilar seizes the priest, he looks across the room, and sees his partner just as she is murdered by a Templar enforcer. An epic duel ensues. Climactic combat is Fassbender's forte. The man shows his emotions so well with his facial expressions. This woman is his wife, presumably, or his lover perhaps. However, I have no idea who she is; heck, i don't even know what her name is. The movies plot prevents you from being emotionally invested in the most adrenaline pumping part of the story, because the script focuses on what has to be the most positively tedious plot device in Assassins Creed.

This movie was Ubisoft's chance to disconnect the Assassins Creed franchise from the half-baked convoluted sci-fi plot devices that are part and parcel of the games. Instead, the film chooses to be a movie that is almost solely, a half baked-convoluted plot device, with a dash of fantastic stunt work on the side.

I am usually pretty optimistic after a movie. It takes very little to please me. My rating scale tends to peak at "perfect", and reach its low at "just good". I'm sad to say that I wanted Assassin's Creed to end. Once I realized that there were no more animus sequences coming my way, I had no reason to care anymore. This was not, sitting on the edge of my seat, or wishing the film would hurry up and get to the climax. I legitimately wanted the movie to be over, so the credits would roll, and I could get up and leave.

Assassin's Creed is a tragedy. So much talent was involved, and clearly, plenty of hard work went into it. A few times, Kurzel's pictorial virtuosity is allowed to shine through the weary and trite plot, but for the most part, it is suppressed by how vapid and incomplete everything else is. It is a pity. Assassins Creed was chock full of potential, but it couldn't have fallen more short.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Assassin's Creed the Movie... a general "meh".

Today we got to go see Assassin's Creed in the theater. We decided to avoid the 3D and just go to a standard showing. We had heard a lot of people didn't like it, and the extra money or headache from watching 3D wasn't worth it.

I do have to say it isn't as bad as other video game movies. Also let's say I am sometimes not the pickiest as evidenced by my desire to go see Resident Evil this year.

I was a bit disappointed. I think they could have done more with it. The actors, especially Michael Fassbender did fine. The action was really good. Let's be honest that is what most people go to see it for. The plot and the actual movie quality itself where the problem.

The plot tried to do too much, especially for those who aren't familiar with the game and the intricate plot there. Michael Fassbender's character and the doctor's characters both went through "will they/won't they" moments. Would they be bad, would they be good. In the end I still couldn't figure what the doctor was doing. Did she stay with the Templars or did she want to join the Assassins?

The biggest issue though was the quality of the movie itself. It was so dark of a film, not a gritty dark violent movie, I mean a seriously the film is so dark I can't tell who is who on inside scenes. Both the hubby and myself couldn't see what was going on and I personally was worried I was going blind or something, but no, the film was dark itself. I can't tell if the dark was because of filming for 3d or a stylish choice, either way, no good!

The good: Very cool fight scenes, the actors actually were decent for this level of movie.

The bad: plot twists, and how dark the actual projection of the movie was.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The way it was being announced sounded really promising. Its trailer was a masterpiece, the fact that it used its original Assassin and original setting instead of milking the popularity of Altair/Ezio, being the highest budget for any video game movie etc. I thought finally this film shall be what changes the video game movie genre once and for all. But it didn't. Here's a list of all the problems I think this movie had.

The movie couldn't even decide who it is for. First they explain obvious things to the audience, like what the Animus is and what the Assassins and Templars do, but then they don't tell us many things we want to know, like why the Apple of Eden is important, what the bleeding effect is or the fact that Cal got desynchronised after performing a Leap of Faith (it looked more like he got injured from the jump). So they bored the fans of the game and confused the ones who haven't played it.

The only thing the ancestor was shown doing was assassinating a man while riding a horse cart, and saving himself from being hanged. That's it. They could have shown so many things - How Aguilar was born, how his upbringing was, how he became an Assassin, how he met that woman who died and why he got so emotional when she died, how he ended up getting caught because of which he was being hanged, what was the aftermath after he escaped and gave Columbus the Apple of Eden, and how he knew the Templar in the horse cart.

Sure they wanted to make everything original, but it would have been great if they decided to add some veteran characters in the cameos. It would have been more fun to see Shaun and Rebecca helping Cal to get out than that boring prison break scene, or if he got hold of the Apple of Eden and killed everyone around him like how Desmond did it in III (it would have been a great reference).

The Animus they introduced also made it so much more confusing. They could have just made the Animus lift him in the air and keep him still instead of moving around. It made the audience wonder what will happen if he runs straight or performs a leap of faith. And the movie answers both the questions by... ... not answering them!

Of course this film is not a complete disaster like how all video game movies before it were. There are a few things I liked about this film. They used their own Assassin. Had they wanted they could have made a crappy Altair origin story or a boring version of Ezio story and milked their popularity. But they took the risk of bringing up a new Assassin, one whom we had never heard of before.

The entire trait of the Assassin was limited to this one film. Nothing to be learnt before watching the film, nothing to know afterwards. This movie is completely standalone, unlike high budget cash grabbing movies nowadays which are made only to create a franchise.

The film took place in Spain. Until now the Assassin's Creed franchise had covered almost all famous European countries - Britain, France, Italy, Portugal, Russia. By now Greece and Scandinavian countries have also joined. But the elephant in the room, Spain, had still not been addressed, even though it was a great place to show.

The visual appeal. Right from where they show a burning Madrid with an eagle flying over it to where Aguilar performs a leap of faith, everything was exciting. I gotta admit, they showed the ancestor very nicely. They should have focused on him more than the modern day.
They knew what translates well into the screen and what doesn't. That's the reason why they didn't dive deep into the game mechanics. They just gave an overview to the audience showing what the series is all about, even if they didn't explain things well and stated the obvious. This way it is possible to pave way for a film franchise if they want.

His latest, based on the popular video games, still boasts impressive visuals, but lacks the narrative heft to make it work. Michael Fassbender plays the last descendant of the Assassins, a secret society that battles the Templars for an end to violence and mankind's free will. The simplistic plot is one that only a video game could spawn and it's inevitably peppered with lots of action. Kurzel has created dense imagery (with lots of dust and smoke) and his fights are high-energy, although ultimately repetitive and tiresome. The best thing that I can say about this film is that Fassbinder spends about 1/3 of it fighting and flexing shirtless. Expand

This movie is visually really impressive. As a fan of AC franchise, I still enjoyed the translation from game to movie. Direction seemed ok, and I enjoyed many images they created.
That being said, this movie is stupid. Not in a sense it is necessarily a bad movie, but in a sense you are not allowed to take any plot line, character or motive seriously, lest you feel stabbing pain in your brain from how stupid it is.
And the cast... well frankly I would say the stars are on par with speaking extras. With honorable exception of Marion Cotillard who did not Skype it in, but again the silliness of her script prevented her from improving this movie.
This much starpower hasn't been wasted since the destruction of death star.

All about the apple of Eden!

One of the much anticipated film of the year. It was a long wait for this film to see a light. I mean ever since the trend had started from the video games to the big screen, this one was a bit late to come into the party. My guess was, that's the disadvantage. The film fanatics thinks, there are too many graphics films. Besides, they did not pick the right screenplay for it like EA did for 'Need for Speed'.

I have never played this game, so I was not expecting it like the others, but I'm surely disappointed with the film. I had no idea about the characters or the universe, it sets in. After watching the film I thought why this game is so famous where I did not find this film any good. Yep, it's not fair to compare two different formats. But the fact will remain that the film was one of the worst among big titles releasing on this year.

I thought it was like 'Matrix', but more a periodic style action- adventure. I think the cast was good and the rest of the film was not. What I disliked the most was the smoky visuals. Yes, all the scenes with the ancient Spain was very smoky atmosphere that I had hard time to have a clear picture of what's going on. I hope there won't be any sequel to it, but if they do plan, I expect a miracle that erases all the bad image created by this part. The film is watchable, but not likable or enjoyable. Only for time pass.

As a fan-made film, this film will certainly please fans of the Assassin's Creed series. For everyone else, this film is an utter mess.

For a two-hour film, there is little to no story for the audience to follow, and while there are some aspects of sci-fi, action and drama they are not given any proper explanations, motives or developments throughout the entire film. By the end it becomes a hot podge of pointless action and CGI that ruins the build-up made from the beginning of the film.

Even as a fan of the early Assassin's Creed series, this movie is simply a disappointment.

IMHO

First I'll start off by saying, when you have a winning formula, why change it? Sure we have played the games, we know the stories, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't have loved to see a live action adaptation of the first game. Michael Fassbender, did a great job playing his character, sure it's a little strange to see him speaking Spanish but hey whatever, the guy has depth. The film is set during the Spanish Inquisition and Fassbender plays Aguilar de Nerha a man who has lost his entire family and has pledged his life to the brotherhood of Assassin's to protect free will against the Templars. The graphics were superb and the locations were beautifully designed with high amounts of detail. Choreography was horrific in most scenes and the acting skills of the no name, could care less about them, extra would be assassins was also laughable. They try to be intense and just come off as trying to hard. Jeremy Irons plays the opposite part of our hero as Abstergo C.E.O., Dr. Rikken who is hell bent on pushing the limits of our hero to find "the Apple of Eden" a relic from the Garden of Eden that contains the seed of the first act of disobedience against God in the Animus a machine designed by Dr. Rikken's daughter Sofia, played by the beautiful Marion Cotillard, who in this film seemed rather stiff in her role, a role and character that we don't get much information on, other than the fact that she has designed the animus and that she is trying to help rid the world of violence. If you are looking for any semblance of the Assassin's creed games that you enjoy, you will only find it in the, the armblades, the disappear into the crowd moves, the leap of faiths, the running on rooftops and the eagles that point out view points. Be prepared to be leaving this movie thinking, "Wow, Mortal Kombat was better than this movie". They couldn't even get the Animus right.

While it does has a few positive points, it still has some major flaws that outweigh those positive aspects. The main thing that this movie excels at is the action. The action's fast, fun and well-directed. However, the action sequences mainly take place in the past sections of the movie, that make up about 35% of this movie's length. But that percentage is disappointingly low, considering that the Assassin's Creed games are known for their epic historic stories, and not for their mediocre 'present' stories. And also the 'past' sections' story is very thin, since these sections are filled with non-stop action scenes. The other 65% of the movie takes place in the 'present', and the present sections are terrible. They're slow, they're dull and they're so poorly-executed. The characters lack character development and, in the end, I didn't really care for any of them. Assassin's Creed is a movie that takes itself way too seriously, and because of that, it lacks charm, resulting in a painfully boring experience. Expand

Everyone was waiting for this film eight years exactly, and we got a piece of lewdness. In this movie there is no plot. I have the feeling that we are shown glued to the series from the middle of the series. The characters don't feel anything at all. You do not care for them. The character Cal Lynch goes to great acting by Michael Fassbender. About Aguilar in General, almost nothing is known, and in the film he is involved only in action. The dialogue is very flawed, I have not heard such stupid dialogues. This movie with no interesting characters, no good dialogue, no interesting, thrilling story. Everything we loved Assassin's Creed in this movie is out! But this film has it good moments. The music is just great! I fell in love with it. Action is very well shot and delivered. Spain looks wonderful and believable, it's a pity that Spain has been recreated in vain, as these good moments can't save the film from mediocrity. Expand

Expand

As a big fan of the games (been playing them since the first one) I can say this is definitely disappointing, although it doesn't say a lot that at this point I expect video game adaptations to be bad. But even thinking that, this is pretty bad. A story that supposedly adapts the games very well, only that makes the Templars look like the dumbest evil organization ever, a main character that I'm still not sure if he is supposed to be good, bad, or anything in between. A wooden supporting cast that I can't name one, and special effects that are worse than some TV shows, and changes or absences from the games that really either make no sense (like the Animus) or just infuriating (no Eagle vision? Really?!!). So all in all, I would have liked it if this movie was good, but I'm not surprised that it's not, and all things considered, I'm glad I didn't pay to watch in theaters. Everything may be permitted, but this movie should have been the exception. Nothing to see here, move along. Expand

The problem was I could not empathize with the characters. A non-repentant murderer doesn't make much of a protagonist, and since 90% of the action sequences are all replayed memories, there's no tension.

The worst of it is, this movie could have been so much more! A Matrix for the 21st century (speak not the name of the two terrible sequels!) but chose instead a superficial, even contradictory, philosophy to base the story upon.

If you have an engaging storyline in the source material, it shouldn't be wildly difficult to make a movie out of it. We have seen a lot of incredible comic book and superhero movies. Why cannot we have a great video game movie?

Good : Somewhere around the middle of the movie, Fassbender breaks the fourth wall and says "what the **** is going on?" which summarizes the entire film. Bad : Michael Fassbender is taken in a quest of revisiting the memories of his great (raised to power 18) grandfather using the weirdest and the most absurd things, which are too absurd even for the needlessly absurd movies like this. Plus, after all that dance offs or action sequences or whatever there is a least interesting build up to the least interesting twist. Probably, the makers thought the best way to utilize the CGI was to create dust sequences and that annoying bird. The action sequences were too boring. It tried to be a "historical epic" of some kind and failed every bit. And, those spirits crossing over were something that the movie didn't try to explain. And whatever happens towards the end is plain vague. The most nonsensical part. It feels like as if Michael Fassbender did this movie because he (as Magneto) couldn't travel back in time in X-Men: Days of Future Past. This is the one of the worst "quest for something", epic and sort of time travel film ever made.

Conclusion : Yet another addition to the long list of whacky video game adaptations. In short, almost 20 minutes of English + shabby script + dust sequences (I don't know what you call that) + ripped off action sequences of Prince of Persia + confusing direction + boring performances = this movie. It was literally vague and shallow. Total waste of time. .

Horrible movie. It deviated too far from the original story.

The protagonist. He's shown to be just an aggressive lunatic who always chooses to kill or get enraged irrespective of what the choices are. In the original story Desmond was a calm, everyday guy. The leap of faith. They aren't supposed to jump into frozen lakes with ice at the top. The leap of faith ends on a large stack of hay. Jumping onto a frozen lake from a very great height was another lunatic move.

The eagles that are flying all around. They are used to denote the ancestors becoming aware of their surroundings. In the game the eagles are only shown when the ancestor climbs up a very tall structure and takes a detailed look all around. In the movie they are just flying around at random times without any explanation for why they are being shown.

The main character's angry and rashful manner is what plummets the whole movie. You might as well have declared him to be an escaped convict from an Asylum and his behavior would still have remained the same. In the real story Desmond is caring, curious, he asks questions, he doesn't trust but doesn't react either. He takes his time to decide aka he's more rationale.

As for the fight sequences horrible! horrible! horrible! The Assassins carry dart knives which they throw with a pin-point deadly accuracy. In the movie they throw it in a fraction of a second and the visuals immediately cut to someone falling somewhere else. That's retarded. You have to show the brilliant aim they take, the flight of the dart, and whom they killed. In the original since they carry a limited supply of dart knives they don't just kill random people like that. They kill very strategically.

Mass murdering vs assassinating. This is another big failure in the movie. In the original series the Assassins move very very secretly and they camouflage into the crowd, they hire girls, or throw coins on the road to cause distraction. The eavesdrop on conversations to understand what's going on inside a palace. The whole sneaking deal to avoid all the guards. They ONLY assassinate the target which is why they have a hidden weapon in their arms - for a silent kill. And they avoid raising a crowd at all costs. In the movie however, there is NOTHING called as sneaking. The Assassins are basically like a game with some cheat codes applied. They kill hundreds of people single-handedly before they kill their target.

The graphics and sets were very beautiful though. But the whole thing about wearing a hood and hiding, camouflaging yourself is lost.

The last thing is the Animus. In the original series the Animus is a machine where you are seated and you get connected to. That makes sense. However, in the movie the animus is a machine which allows you to jump around and move about just like your ancestor was moving. The whole thing just looks retarded. Suppose your ancestor was climbing a very tall building. Then that cannot be simulated in the movie Animus because the range is limited. Overall there was NOT a SINGLE SILENT KILL. Horrible movie! It's a stain on the name of the Assassin's Creed series.

Assassins Creed is really the film I expected to be much better than it was, but it really just adds to the list of poor video game adaptations that boast the possibility of sequels but whose which will likely sit in developmental hell for the next few years before being outright cancelled. It’s a real shame because the cast are actually doing a pretty good job but they can’t fix the inane plot which feels underwhelming and incomplete plus some brilliant stunt work has been ruined by incredibly awful editing which never allows you to fully appreciate the effort that has gone into it. There is one thing I will say in its favour, a lot of care and effort has been put in to the costume design and the set design. This really looks like Assassins Creed, the problem is, it doesn’t have the feel of it and it’s not just down to the fact that we have got a new stupid design for the animus which feels completely unnecessary just there to add extra effects. It’s a mess, pure and simple and I am sad to say that because I really wanted to love this film. I think some fans of the game might get something out of it, but I think for most people, this is one they should avoid, trust me, there are a lot better films coming out. I don’t think the 3D will add much so if you do go and see it, check out the 2D version. Expand

Expand

At best, it's the worst movie you'll watch in a year and possibly the worst in a decade. I don't expect much from a movie (I give 3-4 stars to movies that get 2 from others) but this was just ridiculous - a baby inside his/her mother's womb could have made a better movie than this.

On the subject of good reviews, they talk about fight scenes but the fight scenes are actually horrible in this movie and turn Jason Bourne and Mission Impossible into Epic Bonanzas. Same with Parkour scenes - there was one lame parkour scene that's worse than anything my son has done in AC2, Revelations, Black Flag, Unity and Syndicate. What on earth did they like? They can't seriously have liked the Animus, they couldn't have liked the melody-less and unharmonious music, they couldn't have liked the story, the cinematography and editing were a mess of epic proportions (blur and fog have nothing to do with Assassin's Creed). I get that they like the title and the game (so do I) but that does NOT make a good movie. Generally speaking the positive reviews center on monosyllabic epithets which are usually incorrectly spelt so if your appreciate the lamest badass Templar fight in history then by all means watch the movie and enjoy it... If you watch the movie, remember how ridiculous the main bad guy was. You know nothing about him and you won't even have any recollection of seeing him fight or wielding his sword like a true swordmaster. I believe the director has hired all his family to dislike the negative reviews as he did in the movie. The movie is such a tragedy that it turns Macbeth into Seinfeld.

My son and I love the games. Coming off the heels of Black Flag which we completed twice (on the Xbox and Xbox One) and the incredible Syndicate with its beautiful Victorian settings and music, we expected the movie to honor this series which merges fiction with historical figures and locations. First, the movie is a family affair (see below to learn how the director hired his wife and brother for pivotal parts in the movie). Second, I don't believe the director has played the games and understands what sets Assassin's creed games apart from other games so there's no way he could make a movie worthy of the games.

Unfortunately the movie was extremely disappointing and it's prompted me to write a review which I've never done before. The depth of the story is really low as is the character development. Why is this important? Because you need to "connect" with the characters in any good movie. You won't connect with the actors in the movie as you did with Ezio, Kenway, or Jacob and Evie Frye. Many of the fight scenes are blurry and badly choreographed and that's such a big part of Assassin's Creed. Like the movie, you are wondering what happened as opposed to thinking "wow what an incredible move". The concept of the new animus is nice but they use it in every scene and it destroys any suspension of disbelief that the story is taking place in another timeline. Every 10 seconds in a fight scene you come back to the original timeline and then go back. It's like being taken out of London or Havana in the game to see the animus every minute...

During the movie, my entire family wanted to leave because of the bombastic sound of the soundtrack. Unfortunately, the director hired his brother (and his wife as an actress) and he couldn't come up with a decent score or a catchy melody so he blasts heavy metal music throughout 30%-40% of the movie even without action scenes. Well, you simply can't do that. Which is really sad because all franchises like Star Wars, James Bond, Harry Potter have great catchy themes that the soundtrack is supposed to play with. With a setting in Spain, how could they not come up with a soundtrack that matched Gladiator's is beyond me... Any soundtrack from the games especially Syndicate is better than the movie's which is hard to believe. What happened? Besides a musical lack of talent in terms of creating a soundtrack, I believe the director's brother was influenced by the one-of-a-kind bombastic sound in the Assassin's creed Revelations trailer which features Woodkid's Iron song and to this date remains the best trailer ever made for a movie or game. The issue is that he is nowhere as talented and couldn't choreograph music to fight scenes like Ubisoft did in that trailer - check it out if you can.

There's also no sense of humor at all in the movie to make any character likable and to develop a character. So do yourself a favor, save your money, and your hopes and go watch a better movie, or better yet, play one of the games again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Poor movie, I played the first few assassins creed games and they had a much deeper story and revolved around stealth, blending in ..etc, the animus made no sense in the movie, in the game you are connected to it laying down, you "become" the character, this movie is like he is both playing out the actions of the ancestor but still fully aware, much of the movie felt like slow motion, I found it hard to stay awake, little to no dialog in much of the scenes, the fighting scenes were poorly done camera cuts everywhere, ropes, pulleys & other inhuman reflexes, nothing stealth just random killing, another poor direction is the PG-13 rating, the game is rated M, the movie PG-13 why? no blood, no violence, how can you decide to make an Assassin movie with no violence - also now kids who watch this movie that's rated PG-13 will want to play a M game - smart move. rating should be consistent with the game at-least. on a plus side, I thought the backgrounds and much of the effects were well done, but it's not enough to save this movie, most of the main actors were good with acting which was probably hard to do with a poorly written script and no support character. Sitting on opposing sides, Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard engage in a heated argument that is eventually brought to a silent standoff. Fassbender's character then breaks the silence with a single sentence...

"I'm hungry."

The way this sentence lands essentially summarizes everything you need to know about this movie - its plot is atrociously messy, and like many movies based on video game franchises, it does an incredible disservice to the engaging world it arose out of. If you want to be simultaneously bored and frustrated while perhaps laughing at a scene or two for all the wrong reasons, I highly recommend this movie. Otherwise, you won't regret skipping this blemish upon the legacy the video games helped create.

It's the most boring movie i've see, bad protagonist, non-memorable scenes and charatheres, etc.

Expand

This movie isn't just bad, it's horrible. No story, no character development. For some reason the director decided to make a few clips, slapped together with some overused CGI and half the time nobody really knows what is happening.
