There're a few nice twists, story is well written and represented future vision of the world is quite interesting (it'll be great if we get a follow-up to this). However, roles could be better written, especially main character. I think Robbie Amell did the best he could but Rachael Taylor showed more intense play. For me, the most memorable part of the movie was music score and how it fits in with action on the screen. Expand

When he is attacked and killed by armed invaders Renton awakes to discover that his invention, designed to provide to produce an unlimited source of energy, has left him reliving the same three hours over and over again.

The concept of a "time loop" is hardly an original premise and it'd be easy to come up with a pretty long list of movies and TV shows that have used it over the last 20 years or so. In fact ARQ plays out in a very similar way to Edge of Tomorrow, particularly for the first half of it's running time. Despite the overused concept however ARQ is still an entertaining movie, it wastes no time getting into the action and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep viewers guessing. Well worth a watch.

Semi-interesting SciFi/time travel film with semi-original story and semi-good acting.

ARQ is the companies first foray into science fiction and it hasn't gotten great reviews, due to the fact that it takes place in a time loop. I love science fiction and my favorite type of sci-fi is anything that features the manipulation of time, time travel, alternate history, time displacement, and yes, even time loops. In an apocalyptic futuristic world, Renton (Robbie Amell) has created a new form of energy, one that can possibly turn the tide and save the world. Renton wants to give this gift to all of humanity, but his former employer has other ideas and decides to steal the technology in a violent home invasion, where Renton is killed. After being killed, Renton reawakens starting his day all over again, with a complete memory of what happened. He soon discovers, the longer he lives, the more he learns, but will it be enough to figure out how to escape his current predicament, as well as the unusual time loop he seems to be caught in? Science Fiction fans love this type of film, because it gives us a chance to figure out things at the same time as the main character. It also gives us the chance to think about what we'd do in that situation and see if the character agrees or has some other wildly innovative idea that we didn't even think of. These films also tend to have a lot of noir type twists and turns and can be really thought provoking. The flip side of that, is that you can see some of the same scenes as many as ten times, and if you've never seen anything like this before and aren't a fan of the genre, it can be extremely confusing. That being said, I thought ARQ was exceptionally well written and done to near perfection, some of the twists just blew my mind. On a side note, as a fan of the film Saint Ralph, I was shocked to see Adam Butcher all grown up, playing a hired gun, I really got a kick out of that. ARQ isn't for general audiences, it is genre specific for fans of science fiction. If sci-fi isn't you thing, obviously you're not going to get it and you're not going to like it. If you are a fan, this was really well done, in particular the writing was fantastic, this film will keep guessing right up until the very end, which in and of itself was shocking. Expand

It's maybe a 7.6 where EoT is an 8.4, and that means in whole numbers I have to rate both at 8/10. Most of its thrilling moments worked, most of its plot twists worked, I can only complain about there being maybe 1-2 time jumps too many, 1 surprise attack too many, and a certain lack of closure (at least in terms of understanding exactly what had been going on all along), other than how everything worked.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ARQ is a movie that, I can't really say much, and if I did, it would just add padding to the review. Well, to be honest, it does have some good points, like the concept itself is very interesting, and the protagonist is not bad at all, managing to put you in the situation. The main problem with the movie is that it is so, so little innovative that you will end up predicting a large part of the events that occur. Not all, of course, and there are moments in the film where it tries to go to another way to surprise the viewer, such as when the film explains why both groups wanted the ARQ, how it works exactly, or the ending, which closes with a paradox that results interesting to think about, although very forced and leaving many plot holes. And that is another serious problem with the movie, all the lore that surrounds it. It's almost like I'm watching a sequel. No, there is no sequel. But the way it's told is as if we already had to know several things from long ago. We don't know anything about the war, what exactly happens outside the house (which is where practically the whole movie takes place), and the true intentions of the company. I don't even mention the rest of the characters because they are cliches, only the protagonist managed to get my attention from time to time, and if there is something that I liked, it is how with each repetition he was changing his actions little by little to try to improve them, and how there were times when the antagonists were left with some memory of the previous timeline and act accordingly. It's nothing to write home about, but it was more or less well executed.
Overall, I can say that it is a fairly mediocre movie, but I can still recommend it to pass some time, since it leaves you more or less thinking about some parts, especially at the end, but nothing more.

A much better movie than given credit for. Robbie Amell is a surprisingly good actor and the story is good. It’s not the most creative, original or cool time travel movie but it’s better than most.
