This seemed like it would be dumb fun, which would have been fine, but unfortunately there’s really no fun at all (besides possibly the opening scene)...it’s just dumb.

I still think this movie is fun, but I'm taking my score down 1 point from a 7 to a 6. He made too many good points. So for the first time I'm updating a movie score while it's fresh in my head.)

Though with way more gore than either combined, this movie reminded me of “Ghosts of Mars” and “I Am Legend.” For me that’s not a bad thing. The plot is pretty straightforward and there are many elements that I like and that work well and to the movie’s favor. I really loved the opening and how it was used as a way to introduce the characters. It might have been the best use of slow motion that Snyder has ever implemented...and I truly hate nearly every bit of slow motion in his movies. I won’t spoil them, but there were a few somewhat fresh ideas on the zombie genre here too and I really enjoyed those as well. I think the setting was a great choice and the special effects are really good for the most part. There are a few animal sequences that could have been better, but they didn't take me out of my low level suspension of disbelief. While I didn’t love the very end of the movie I think that Netflix has plans making this a franchise and that could be really fun as they explore more of the mysteries they set up here. If you like action horror then Army of the Dead with definitely fit the bill for its runtime.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLDR: Army of the Dead sucks! Full of clichés, uninteresting characters, stupid deaths and the old narrative that the military screws up and but then they want to take advantage of their screw up to build super soldiers... One of the most unoriginal, uninteresting zombie movies ever…the ending makes no sense, the main character (Dave Bautista) gets bitten and within a few minutes he turns, the other guy (Omari Hardwick) gets bitten by the same main Zombie dude (that for some reason is smart enough to hear a helmet but dumb enough to wear a cape), but somehow it takes several hours, perhaps even days until he starts to turn?
So disappointed with Zack Snyder, after releasing a Masterpiece that was Justice League (his 4 hour version), he does something like this… Zack Snyder is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get…a masterpiece or masterfiasco.

The initial premise was great, Zombie heist action movie, hoping for something like train to busan meets oceans 11, instead it was a movie that delivered neither a good heist or good zombie survival movie. The main issue being the extra hooks they kept tacking on. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a movie tackling sensitive subjects such as immigration, and the abuse women face (two subjects this movie seems to want to cover) however do the subjects justice. Instead of being poignant it just feels like moral grandstanding, no actual substance what so ever and the movie just keeps derailing as it continued, adding then dropping plot devices whenever it wants.

I normally love a good cheesy B-movie action flick like this, if the plot sucks, you can just turn your brain off and enjoy the action at least, but not with this movie. The action is constantly being broken up with needless drama and aforementioned new plot device, like literally every 5m which is terribly written and terribly delivered by 50% of the cast. TLDR version of this review, I would avoid this movie like a zombie outbreak if you have any kind of taste and don't want to waste most of your afternoon.

Watch Dawn of the Dead instead, this is probably Zack Sndyer's worst film. Why are there so many cuts in some scenes? Why are there terminator zombies? How is the guy who threw a 1,000 lb table like nothing struggling to move a mattress? What happened to the woman she saved, why did that even happen? How did he survive a nuclear blast and radiation? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unbelievable how this movie it's wrong, it's not an action zombie movie and it's not a heist movie...
A lot of copy-paste from masterpiece doesn't make a masterpiece especially when half cast it's bad, it's like a Deja Vu because you know exactly that the daughter will survive but you wish she die soon because is brainless and non-sense, the only good point in the movie is Dave Bautista, Tig Notaro and Nora Arnezeder.
There lot of impossible things going on, when rain the zombie come back to life (the decaying brain), everybody around a nuke still alive, the main actors are less than 1000km and even Omari Hardwick that was in the middle of the explosion. Everybody got blood in the face but looks like nothing...
Snyder has spent years saying that his version of JL would have been better and instead it was only longer, I expected to see a film with a soul and instead, it is the thing that is most missing from this two-hour agony.
I almost forgot that the prologue it's 15 minutes long and stupid and (plot twist)it's the best part of the movie.
Don't waste your time...

Ending was the most preposterous and stupid **** I’ve ever seen. I’d be interested to hear how long someone that just walked into ground zero of Hiroshima 10 minutes afterwards would’ve walked around a nuke blast w/o their organs failing immediately from absolute nuclear destruction. **** stupid.
Add that onto dude’s covered-up wound he has yet to inspect, NOT TO MENTION TURN INTO A ZOMBIE when it takes every other character minutes after a bite to turn just let me know how lazy and stupid this movie was.
So glad this was YET ANOTHER 2+ hour slog from ZS.
Maybe if he makes a **** **** 5+ hour ****-ass action movie, his fanboys and morons who enjoy this uninteresting, uninspired, and unoriginal drivel can win him some awards. Please watch DotD instead. It’s at least kinda funny and entertaining. **** Zack Snyder.

Typical Hollywood propaganda in this day and age. A nearly three hour long movie with no real plot or storyline, just “how many anti-white jabs can we fit in a three hour time slot?” I’m not even kidding, the plot of this movie makes no senseTypical Hollywood propaganda in this day and age. A nearly three hour long movie with no real plot or storyline, just “how many anti-white jabs can we fit in a three hour time slot?” I’m not even kidding, the plot of this movie makes no sense and leaves so many loose ends untied. No redeeming qualities whatsoever. Constant shifting of the narrative and so much dull downtime that you’ll want to throw up near the end. The main theme of the movie has nothing to do with zombies, but all about your typical social justice nonsense.

Just like the overwhelming majority of movies on Netflix nowadays, it follows the common theme of “dumb white beta male humiliated by intelligent alpha black male / trans woman.” I mean they’re not even trying to hide it anymore, every single villain in this movie is a straight white male, and all the good guys are colored, gay, female, or trans. The only time a straight white male is allowed to be portrayed as a good guy in these movies is when they’re overly submissive and always need assistance from the alpha trans woman (Dieter, for example).

They put this in 99% of media nowadays to subconsciously plant the “white man bad” idea in the minds of uncorrupted (for now) young kids, their target audience.

One could draw the conclusion that the movie symbolizes the zombies as Trump supporters and the rainbow zombie heist party as the “oppressed group fighting for reparations,” but I’m not even going to go there. Boycott Hollywood for your LIFE!

Just skip this movie and save 2.5 hours of your time.

I am all in for simple action movies such as Fast and Furious, Expendables etc.

So I went in expecting a simple zombie movie, with good Bautista action, shooting and hitting zombies paired with some cool CGI.

You can't go wrong right?

Wrong.

Even if you are high or drunk the (way too many) plot holes stand out like a sore thumb. You just can't turn your brain off that much.

The writing is non-existent and the movie doesn't make any sense at all.

Other reviewers have pointed out how big of plot holes we are talking about.

I give it a 3 because:

1) The action scenes were pretty cool and I think the actors did a very good job. Still, they don't make up for the huuuge plot holes. If this movie hadn't a plot at all it'd be better.

2) Make up, scenery all very good. Sad not more was done with them

3) Some interesting introductions on the zombies genre. Love it or hate it, it's a new take at least. Sadly, they don't do anything with this new set.

I think some reviewers are really unjust to the actors. I especially liked Bautista and the rest of the merc team and the action scenes they shot were cool.

If their dialogues and scenes are bad it's because of the writing, not of their acting.

Bautista I hope to see better movies with you, especially action movies.

Zack Snyder someone must tell you that you can't do everything in a movie.

As someone else said if this was simply a movie with some mercs going in to get the abandoned money left behind and just one story arc, it'd have been better.

P.S. Remove the daughter

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What an amazing movie! Totally wasn’t expecting this! I was expecting a no brainer and zombie killing movie (with some slow motion shots haha). But wow! It made me care for the zombies?! Also, it touches on a lot of interesting concepts which should be explored in the sequels like aliens, time travel loop? So it’s definitely not only a zombie movie. Definitely need to watch it a few times to grasp it.

The only character arc I didn’t like was batista’s daughter. She was like the “Chris Pratt in infinity war”. The rest all did their job relatively well!

These reinvents the zombie movie genre. I hope they make more of these kind of movies which reinvents the genres!

Spoilers ahead: For example you know that every white male is evil along with every hetero male (unless black). When they get to the roof I knew they hadn't been abandoned by teh pilot because he/she is LGBTQR+ and they are all noble. Only white or hetero men are evil. When the chopper crashed and the daughter survived I knew she would end up killing her dad. Her dad represents the patriarchy. They put these scenes in for brain washing propaganda. They made the daughter kill her own dad, it's symbolic of young women rejecting and killing the patriarchy. None of this is an accident. All done on purpose for woke propaganda. I won't even get started with the cast. You already know just from looking at them that this is not a group anyone would take in with them in real life. All movies today are so far removed from reality that it's 100% leftist propaganda. All the females are badasses with no faults. The entire thing is actually based on two lesbian lovers from a camp where one goes to save the other. Batista is not even the lead, in every scene a white woman is leading the team. It's such pathetic strong female character propaganda. It's too bad we let these people put this stuff out. Stop supporting them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's fun, really great movie. there's a scene that didn't click tho, it's the Maria and Scott thing. And what was up with the zombies? it kind-of lack something i can't point out. why does the "zombie king" keep people in a room. how is the zombie queen pregnant? it's just very unusual. we didn't see much of the normal zombies except at the beginning. the zombie from the vault disappeared, too. there's a lot of questions, maybe they're saving it for a follow-up movie. but it's still great. i enjoyed it. "Army Of The Dead" finds the polarizing filmmaker at his most aerodynamic; a curious thing to say about a two-and-a-half hour long zombie film, sure, but hear me out. Many of Snyder's films end up suffering at the feet of the aesthetic, with things like characterization and narrative taking a back seat to the overall look of the movie. This really marks the first time I've seen a Zack Snyder film where every visual element felt as though it was in service to the overall product and not just to the audience's eyes. Not sure if this has to do with Snyder's relationship to the material itself, the fact that he's his own cinematographer this time around or the fact that he's working with a much more hands-off studio/distributor in the form of Netflix. In any event, you're given boatloads of well-shot zombie action, some surprisingly resonant emotionality and easily the best CGI-beast mauling scene I've seen since "The Revenant." Zombie tigers are the greatest thing to happen to the subgenre. Quote me. Expand

I found a lot of joy watching the creepiness and comic like characters in this ultra dystopian near future. The zombies were really good, the acro and stunts really brought it home, and, well, a Zombie Tiger. Also if you look for it, one of the team looks like Vasquez from Aliens, and does her best fight sequence as such easily. I loved the moments with what if, and could it happen along with the music choices and crazy situations. It's a comic book come to life, and Zack did a great job with everyone. The 0.95EF lens might not have worked for me, but over the film's length it felt personal and was a very good choice. Enjoy it, grab something to chomp on and watch it alone in the dark tonight. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's entertaining. Great soundtrack, visuals, editing. But the plot is predictable. There are no surprises. Huma Qureshi's character is there to just get kidnapped - might as well have had an object there instead. The institutional violence that forces her to get into a situation where she's abducted could have been dwelled upon more. The heroes return could've been an in your face to it. But that is not to be. Better story alone would've raised the score to a 10. Expand

Take a little of John Carpenter's Escape From New York and Ghosts Of Mars (a hierarchy amongst the creatures), toss in any heist flick, and you have Army Of The Dead. It has some interesting ideas, but it starts scurrying around too much and ends up being quite dull because of it. And the characters I didn't care about seemed to do a lot better than the ones I did care for. So it felt like they had it all backwards when writing the script.

I don't usually mind high stakes movies that dares to take chances on the main characters. But this felt forced.

It has a scene later on in the movie, with a twist (literally), that ruined the rest of the movie for me. I lost all interest after that scene and only barely made it through to the end having moved the Netflix browser window to my secondary monitor. Only occasionally glanced at it to see what was going on.

Put into two words, to me, the movie felt "dull" and "exasperating". That's not usually how I feel about zombie movies. I usually love them. Not this one.

The opening montage scene showing vegas becoming infected was phenomenal and could've been a movie itself. There is also a cool John Wick style zombie shootout scene that was awesome. Near the end where it starts to live up to the title of "Army of the Dead" was one chaotic but fun zombie action sequence. I also like the soundtrack by Junkie XL even though there isn't a memorable soundtrack such as with the DCEU stuff. For the most part, the soundtrack elevates the scene and there is also pop music that actually works well in the movie.

I also really liked Dave Bautista as the main lead. Dave gives a pretty strong performance and shows that he can give emotive acting if need be. In terms of characters, there were three I liked which were Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick), Ludwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer) and Marianne Peters (Tig Notaro). I liked how Vanderohe was this badass zombie slayer while Ludwig was skilled in safe cracking but knew nothing when it came to zombies. The growing relationship between them is one of the best parts of the movie. I also like Marianne's wisecracking and sarcastic personality which was charming despite her small screen time. I also got to appreciate how they green-screened Tig to replace Chris D'Elia, who was accused of sexual misconduct, into the movie as it still feels natural. Although, the green screen can feel pretty obvious at times. Unfortunately, I could give zero care for the other characters. Everyone else is either so forgettable, dies too early or is unlikeable. Zack seems to kill off characters for shock value when the character themselves are becoming interesting which is a shame. There are also way too many characters in my opinion and I honestly feel like some of the characters just didn't need to be in the movie. I also have mixed feelings about the cinematography which is done by Zack Snyder, the director, himself. The cinematography isn't awful or anything but it certainly isn't as good as Zack's previous movies which are clear as he didn't hire a cinematographer and did it himself. It's just very dull to look at. There are also a lot of shots where it is blurry and pixelated which is just very ugly to look at.

The biggest problem with Army of the Dead is the writing which is also done by Zack Snyder. Zack had a unique idea with the zombie heist idea but he then ruins it by adding a bunch of convoluted zombie stuff and a dumb plotline with Scott (Dave Bautista) daughter Kate. Kate joins because a stupid mother went into a zombie-filled Las Vegas and she is going to find her. What annoys me is that there is no reason for Kate to be a part of the heist which is made worst as her character is annoying. Zack also seems to even forget about the mother as well which makes this plotline seem even more irrelevant. There is also a plotline with a spy that also amounts to nothing by the end of the movie. There is also some dumb plotline with the Alpha zombie and some baby thing which was also very pointless. Army of the Dead is 2 hours 28 minutes which is very noticeable as the pacing slows down a lot. They could easily cut it down by 30 minutes and the movie remains the same. I don't mind dumb movies and a movie can be so dumb that it becomes good. However, Army of the Dead is so dumb to the point that the movie loses enjoyment. Why is it the government can allow a group to fly out of Vegas but not fly into Vegas? Why is there a line about zombies hibernating but wakes when it rains if that is never going to come into play? If the vault is owned by Tanaka, the big boss who wants the heist, why does he not just give them the code? If Tanaka wanted the zombie blood then why not just have the heist be about getting the zombie blood instead of the bloody vault? Why does a character who never killed zombies ever, able to John Wick all the zombies? Why does the character who gets betrayed not mention the person who betrayed them? Why does no one help save the person who is only surrounded by 5 zombies and instead just stare at them? Why do the characters talk about their suspicion of this person being a spy but never bring it up again? Why is it with a Nuke incoming that the characters stop and stare at each other a lot? Why do they not just use dead bodies to activate traps instead of an alive zombie? Why is a dead zombie hand able to attract a zombie? Why do some zombies hibernate but some don't? How is a zombie horse able to catch up to a helicopter? Why do some people turn into zombies in a matter of minutes but someone else can takes hours? WHY ARE THERE ROBOT ZOMBIES? Why does Zack not understand how nuke works? Overall, Army of the Dead could've been a fun, exciting zombie and heist movie but fails to deliver in both. The movie had a lot of potentials but it is ruined by Zack's terrible writing skills. If you want some fun zombie action then there is that but don't expect much more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

As someone who absolutely loves Zack Snyder’s remake of Dawn of the Dead, I was hoping for something similar in tone. The thought of a heist film set during the zombie apocalypse, that sounded awesome, and it should have been. Instead the film decides it wants to drop the “heist” idea two thirds of the way into the film when the secondary “baddie” lets another character know “it was never about the money”, just so he can steal a super zombie’s head for the government to experiment on. There inlays another problem with the film, zombies and “super” zombies. The film treats the normal zombies like your average cannon fodder with no real threat. The first member of Bautista’s team dies after she solo massacres dozens of them, only to not quite be swarmed and still be savable yet still get abandoned. And that’s the only major incident involving the normal zombies. Later the few we see are used for gags and the film switches focus onto the super zombies who communicate, are intelligent, and can apparently procreate. The worst offense the film makes is it’s character usage. We are introduced to a slew of interesting characters only for 90% of them to be killed off in the last 20-30 minutes and the one person who does survive is the least likable character in the group which is Bautista’s character’s daughter. Her own selfishness is what leads to half the team’s deaths because the person she’s trying to save **** dies anyways. The film ends by making the viewer believe that one of the few truly great characters survived only to reveal that he was bit and that the infection will now spread. I get that the film sets up a sequel and Netflix wanted it that way because there is a prequel anime on the way and a prequel movie that has apparently already finished development and is in post production. But this is 100% a case of counting your chickens before they hatch. Worst film Snyder has made, which is saying a lot given how much people hate Sucker Punch, and people rag on BvS. Definitely not worthy of a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. No matter how much you love Snyder films or zombie films, which I love both. Avoid this film like a real life zombie plague. Expand

You know it's a bad movie when your spending ready the reviews about a film rather than watching the film. This film had so much potential yet was about as exciting as dead badger. I honestly feel bad for Zack Snyder. He usually does some good movies. This however is just sad. The camera work is so bad. It's like they can't figure out how to focus on the subject. The blurry background is incredibly overused. The actingI honestly feel bad for Zack Snyder. He usually does some good movies. This however is just sad. The camera work is so bad. If I didn't know any better, I would have thought this was some low budget Sundance film. Expand
