Amsterdam never gets off the ground, and this is caused by David O. Russell's inability to get the plot going and he completely squanders his huge cast, because even with what they achieve in terms of convincing performances, it's all washed away by the ineffectiveness of the material they're given to work with.
It's not that I say they didn't believe in the material. The material wasn't up to their potential.

It's not the calamity that a certain part of the public and the press were talking about, at least it wasn't in my opinion, but I do consider it a totally misguided product on O. Russell's part.

Having a great cast isn’t as impressive as it used to be, and most of them sleepwalk through their performances here (Bale and, surprisingly, Taylor Swift are both solid). Things here are just a mess, and a boring one at that.

A few years later, back in the US, they witness a murder that sparks an investigation.  This was based on the Business Plot, which was a conspiracy to overthrow President Roosevelt and replace him with a fascist. Writer/director David O. Russell has assembled an impressive cast that includes Robert De Niro, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock and Mike Meyers. They all handle the dialogue and situations well, but Russell's writing meanders. Not sure what he's trying to achieve: It this a moral/history lesson or a period/stylized mystery? It's attractive to look at and there's some internal energy, which is weird because it still feels oddly flat. Expand

Though I can't say it's as bad as a lot of the press has made it out to be, it's very clear that something went wrong somewhere along the road to "Amsterdam." Whether it's the shaky tone, the indulgent and off-kilter approach to the narrative or the lackluster directorial skills on display, there are very clear identifiers of a creator squandering so much money and talent all throughout this. It's such a shame too, because there's some truly gifted people working in here. Christian Bale, John David Washington, Margot Robbie, Robert De Niro and even Emmanuel Lubezki get moments where their abilities are allowed to glimmer, but because everything feels like it's in service to this muddled and meager vision, no one really shines as much as they deserve to. Definitely nowhere near as sharp and fun as I think it should have been. Expand

I found Amsterdam as a movie that fills with great ensemble cast and great performance with quite a fatal pacing and story problem, mostly on the pacing, the story of Amsterdam though it's credited the most as a thriller crime detective movie, for me it's more of like a romance friendship movie with thriller crime detective thing as just a side story, i'm fine if it's work, but unfortunately David O. Russell didn't really nailed it in this one, i found the relationship between Margot Robbie and John David Washington character are unnecessary but i'm still fine with it, lot's of moment where i feel the movie is pushing back too many times, like just skip to the main parts already we have this type of drama enough, and the pacing is for me i found it mostly exhausting, and for 2 hours and 14 minutes movie trust me you will really feel it if you watch it, in the more positive side like i mention in the beginning, the cast is fantastic, and the good news is all of that fantastic cast i feel like it did not wasted, even Taylor Swift who only have a brief appearance in the film is pleasant, all the cast did great and if i have to give my personal pick for best performance in the film, i'm giving it to legend himself Robert De Niro, he was surprisingly have lot more than i though it's gonna be and he's killing it, i was still mostly enjoyed the movie, there is still quite a lot moment that i like, enjoy, and even some of them make me laugh, and at last love the costume and make up design, so overall Amsterdam is indeed mostly a mixed-bag, if it have less drama, shorter and more focusing on the thriller it could have been way better, fortunately the ensemble cast and all the performance that they give didn't make this movie a complete disaster.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was a truly fun 2 hours; but the plots thickening became a tad laborious before the ending you sort of knew was coming eventually. Robert De Niro was surprisingly good, in playing the role of General Smedley and the truth of the stain that fascism brought to the United States by Republican sycophants of Mussolini and Hitler. I was bored by the end of the movie and came out so disappointed that I even forgot I liked the first act. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington are really wonderful in the film. I think the problem is that once it introduced so many other plot points other than these 3 character's relationships, that is when I lost interest. I was so invested in Margot Robbie and John David Washington's weird romance but then I forgot about it by the end because there were a thousand other things going on that I didn't care about. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Do I have questions about this movie? Sure. Am I confused by how many times someone stared directly into the camera to say the word “Amsterdam”? Absolutely. Do I think this permanently marred my ability to enjoy this otherwise quirky romp through one auteur’s “Rosencrantz and Guildensterning,” as Friend put it to us, of the Plot Against America as told from a multi-racial lens? Certainly not. Do I think that De Niro likely did not memorize his lines? Yes. Does he seem to take a lot of roles in his old age which necessitate he get shot at while he gives a speech? Possibly. Was his continued speech during that gun fight a bit extra? A bit? Yes, at least a bit. Does that mean that someone should compare watching this movie to spoiled sushi, as Friend did? No, this movie wasn’t not poison, or even poisson. (The last time I walked out of a movie, by the way, if we’re counting, was Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, and the exact moment that I noped out was the third time that someone read a quote off their cell phone during the parent-teacher meeting and the only reason I even tried to watch it was because we were on such a good run of movies that accepted the pandemic as reality.)

There is a tragic quality to the way in which Valerie (Margot Robbie) and Harry (JD Washington) tiptoe around their third-wheel Burt (Christian Bale) in the movie. The whole trailer is very upfront that this is the story of a platonic throuple, which immediately brings to mind the awkward and unasked for favoritism of Dorothy. Amsterdam is so feverishly intent on the creation of biracial couplings in order to formulate a Fifth Element-type thesis for how to counter hate that it sometimes is unwilling to consider non-romantic alternatives, which is odd to say, since Amsterdam is so open to considering a whole host of plot alternatives and fantasy sequences, divergences from the main story in order to experiment with storytelling.

One of my favorite departures from the linear narrative style is the way that Valerie and Harry’s story of the missing afternoon is told through a flashback with non-diegetic narrative overtop, like a scene from a much-beloved movie from my childhood, The Sandlot.

There was a time this past pandemic when I couldn’t stop talking about David Starr Jordan and the murder of Jane Stanford, and I feel like Lulu Miller’s book brings together some of the loose threads of this movie’s Committee of the 5. And on the topic of The Five: Raimi Malek’s Tom has a wonderfully twisty interchange with Bale early on in the first act, which really casts doubt on the morality of the birder MI-5 fellow working to stop the Second World War.

Some might say that Taylor Swift’s presence in the movie was too… swift. Some might say that she would rather kill herself than be present for the final, preachy act, but I stand by her decision to Emma Roberts herself. When she reads this review, which I am confident will happen at some point, I want her to know that her performance was appreciated, each and every time a wheel rolled over her mangled body, I yelped.

Ultimately, Amsterdam is going to go down as one of the biggest box office losers of the past few years and that shouldn’t mean much to you, because this is but a cautious and conservative experiment on the part of David O. Russell.

It took over half of the film to get to the point where all the actor's stories were told and how they started a friends' pact.
This movie is a slow burn and that is okay, but when there is so much meaningless dialog it frustrates the audience as it takes so long to get any reveal or payoff. The cinematography was okay and they used a very original stylistic approach that was very much appreciated. Overall the film was the sum of its total parts and not enough to recommend to anyone.

In addition to a confusing script and disjointed editing, political correctness is embedded in every scene in the film. The filmmakers priority was social justice only, the art and story took a backseat, hidden behind all the subliminal messages. It is sad that a film that can count on the talent of Christian Bale does not cause any enthusiasm in the spectators, none emotion. And of course, we have Denzel son, probably one of the worst actors to emerge in recent years... there's no difference in his performance in this and the other films he worked. Expand

He sounded like some black dude you'd meet on the street, present day). Then it got all stupid and artsy between the two worst actors in the bunch. Christian Bale was fun, I eventually lost interest. Couldn't even finish the film.

Shout out to Taylor Swift, though. I often groan when I see musicians trying to act, but she did a great job, for as little as she was in it. I don't even care for her music, but she held her own. Definitely better than Washington or Robbie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Splendidly Classy and Artsy Movie with a Huge Cast!

As my go-to cinema ritual, I don't watch movie trailers or spoilers at all. My only expectations are based on the poster of this movie. Then, I know this must be something different. And I am rite! From the beginning to the ending, this movie satisfyingly seems very classy & artsy with everything on it. Greater satisfaction comes when the other huge cast slowly but surely appears.

The main plot is a trio of veterans of World War I as the poster displayed, they met and become friends from the war until post-war but then they were forced to live separately. Long story short, destiny gave them an opportunity to meet again when everything collided.

Classy and artistic are well-delivered throughout the entire movie with songs, stylish outfits, detailed-oriented movie set, and the script. Ofc, this happens coz this is a vintage movie ambiance. The jokes are also classy one coz tend to be cynical, lol. Besides, huge actors are worth to paid coz they really delivered incredible acting performances.

A huge cast from the leading male role such as Christian Bale to the unimportant role such as Taylor Swift is presented in this movie. Maybe she was cast to remind us about her upcoming album this month, lol. Overall, almost every cast famously known in the Hollywood industry is present in this movie. This is one of the biggest satisfactions! This must be an expensive budget movie!

Sadly things, there is a couple of parts that are boring. Also, the jokes sometimes failed to kill the time. Both didn't really vividly can be felt, but it doesn't matter coz thanks to the great artistic and cast performance. Besides, perhaps, some great actors aren't well-directed or performed coz they seem meaningless. It's normal but it seems sad coz they are big budget cast!

Overall, this movie really great! Don't miss it! It really gave something different which is a classy and artsy movie for this year. Rare gem. Vintage.

The cinematography, comedic timing, and acting are very good. I enjoyed Amsterdam. But it suffers at the very end from a very common issue with movies like this, where the script tries to tie everything together too quickly in a single scene. I still enjoyed my time with it but regret that the story is more muddled than it should have been. I chalk this up to the studio not being able to decide if they wanted to dramatize the actual event the movie is based on, which is called the 'Business Plot', or make a satirical allegory for contemporary corporate-backed, fascist movements. The movie lands poorly in the last couple of scenes because they try to make their fictional murder-mystery plot tie too quickly into this historical conspiracy that is central to the plot but has only been developed superficially.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Plot

The Business Plot (also called the Wall Street Putsch[1] and The White House Putsch) was an alleged political conspiracy in 1933 in the United States to overthrow the government of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and install a dictator.[2][3]

Retired Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler asserted that wealthy businessmen were plotting to create a fascist veterans' organization with Butler as its leader and use it in a coup d'état to overthrow Roosevelt. In 1934, Butler testified under oath before the United States House of Representatives Special Committee on Un-American Activities (the "McCormack–Dickstein Committee") on these revelations.[4] Although no one was prosecuted, the congressional committee final report said, "there is no question that these attempts were discussed, were planned, and might have been placed in execution when and if the financial backers deemed it expedient."

Funny, smart, clever, witty, and amazing acting. Outstanding performance by Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, and every other person of this absolute STACKED cast. I was absolutely captivated by how each and every single character had so much depth and personality. I found myself wanting more, but the 2 hour and 15 min run time didn't feel long enough. I really was able to fall into this world. Usually, movies can drag along, stretching out every last second of that 2 hour time frame, but I found Amsterdam to be, not only refreshing, but a masterpiece in it's time. I will not be surprised when this becomes a cult classic. I spent a good part of my morning reading reviews of top critics and I have to say, I'm surprised that these movie critics got lost in the plot, because not only does it have a easy to follow plot, but it was such an enjoyable ride. This movie has a specific type of humor, and I think that not everyone has that. But even then, it was still such a good watch. Highly recommend. Expand

The film is a lot of character development but the story and script feels very robotic. At times, the dialogue is too much filling with not enough flavor. I get why some audiences might lose interest around the 1st/2nd act, but at the end, it was very engaging and you wonder how much of this dramatization of this true event is accurate. Expand

The all star cast was a bonus. I hated to see Taylor Swift killed off so early.Costumes and sets were right on. Never found the story dragging at any time during the 2hr 15min.

A fun film about friendship, some might call it a mummers farce, but I was in awe at the reference to aliens part.

Amsterdam provided a movie about friendship, loyalty, and courage- The main character has morals and decency as well-- this film is better than the critics give it credit for. Well acted, great costumes and decent script.

Do Not Watch. A name dropping cast of Hollywood talent wasted! Waste of time. Beyond boring what was director thinking???
