The old man is back.

And he's back with thoughtful, raging force.

Not only is 84-year old Clint Eastwood back in directing American Sniper, he's broken the mold and put it together again with renewed verve and vitality.

American Sniper is an almost-miraculous achievement.

There is little if anything in his recent films that would suggest that director Eastwood would be able to make a film like American Sniper.

The bottom line is that this was the first movie in a very long time that I was happy to pay $15 for at theaters. The acting was phenomenal, as was the cinematography and visual effects. You goons can rate it 0 all day but the fact is that this film may soon become the highest grossing R rated film of all time. Normal people without hard left political agendas like it because it reminds us of the heroes we have at home. Expand

My conclusion after watching this is that this is probably exactly the movie Chris Kyle would have made about himself. It has some real strengths because of that, but also some profound weaknesses.

I thought it portrayed the nature of modern battle and the Iraq environs reasonably well (not having any first hand experience or anything). It was tense at times, but also a long grind, and that is true to form. Some of the moments where soldiers get shot or are in the hospital afterwards are effective and feel real (and that I do have secondhand experience with).

The movie's flaws are two. The first is the inevitable Hollywood-ization. Not being sure when I watched it, I checked, and the notion that he had a "white whale" enemy sniper that haunted him throughout four tours and that he had to kill to feel complete as a soldier is made up. Some of the romance is treacly, the training scenes are trite, and the jeopardy (while there surely was a lot in real life) is trumped up at times.

The second and more profound one is that the film reflects what seems to be the bias of the autobiographer himself. His motivations are always pure. The bad guys are always bad. Every shot he takes is a good shot. His leadership, his fathering skills, and his relationships with other soldiers bring nothing but positive reactions. He struggles, but he's always the good guy. I don't doubt that the truth is that he did some good things, but I can't imagine that it's that simple, and reading into what is known about the man suggests that he wasn't entirely honest (and indeed was sued successfully for lying in his book; the movie doesn't cover that) and he bought completely into the narrative the film presents-the idea that Iraq was a justified response to 9/11 and that the war was for a reason-which we now know is a lie and lead to a disastrous conflict that was mismanaged at every turn and accomplished nothing.

Which takes me back to the beginning: American Sniper is likely exactly what its subject character wanted to say-the sheep/wolf/sheepdog story at the beginning seems so sum his philosophy all up-and in a way it's good that his perspective is being represented. Certainly our veterans deserve a voice in public discourse. But honestly, I'm not sure about what this particular voice is saying. Watch it, and decide for yourself.

The story is as usual a heroic tale of a Navy Seal with many tense action scenes, and quite of bit of drama as well so if u are expecting a Call of Duty shootout movie then u will be a little disappointed. Bradley Cooper is great and he deserves an Oscar for his performance. The downsides to the movie are that it is a bit long and drags on some dramatic scenes. You can feel that the movie is trying hard to fill in as many aspects of the hero's life as possible but it sometimes tries too hard and feels tedious. Still it is a good movie and well worth the $; just don't expect it to be a war movie with 100% action throughout. It is more of a biographical film of a heroic soldier and his life. Expand

It doesn’t tell the whole story of the war in Iraq or any war. It doesn’t have to. A movie should entertain and some movies can also provoke thought and feeling on a deeply emotional and philosophical level. American Sniper does all of these.

Many critics of the movie have said that the movie doesn’t say enough. That it glosses over complexities of war, or that it allows its action sequences to obfuscate what should be a message about the horrors of war for all sides. The film has been criticized as jingoistic, propagandistic and for glorifying war.

People have criticized that it has inspired some to express their anger and hatred toward Muslims, as though 9/11, airport security, continued terror attacks and widespread expression of hatred by Muslims against America and the West have nothing to do with it.

When a film tries to deal with all the complexities of a subject such as war it can’t help but become preachy. This film doesn’t do that. It exposes us to the complexities in a very real way. It doesn’t try to explain the unexplainable; it just allows us to observe and feel it.

Bradley Cooper does a great job. But for me Clint Eastwood has done a magnificent job as a director. I loved “The Pianist,” and was very happy that Roman Polanski won the Oscar. I love Clint Eastwood’s direction of “American Sniper” for the same reason. The direction disappears.

So many directors think that tricks, gimmicks, angles and effects are what it’s all about in trying to impress an audience. The miracle of filmmaking is when a director can present a story that pulls you in and puts you there; you aren’t watching something created; you are part of the creation, and the hand of the director is invisible.

Bravo Clint.

Directed by Clint Eastwood with a screenplay by Jason Hall, the film stars Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller. This is the story of a true patriot whose love of country knows no bounds and is inspiring to the most callous of disbelievers. Much like the movie "Selma", the subject of the film is greater than the film itself. This is an action packed war picture with lots of action and, true to Mr. Eastwood’s love of the military and the battles they face, shows us the true nature of the conflict and trials and tribulations of the brave men who fight in them and the mental and physical healing that is so critical to their survival. I viewed the film under the best of circumstances in an IMAX theater and still came away feeling that I had seen "another war film" rather than the great piece of film making that is receiving so much revenue, drawing so many crowds and receiving so many craft nominations. The film is much too long and at times the audience feels it is taking these extra tours of duty along with the
characters in the film. I give the film an 8 because it did hold my interest even though it failed the "I never looked at my watch" test..

This what Unbroken should’ve been a well made film based on a true story that actually has a beginning and end along with a protagonist we know and connect with. Also, the film is well shot immersing you in the really well done battle scenes, which is enriched by the excellent use of surround sound and a solid score. When the film ended, for reasons that anyone who is familiar with the actual people and events this film is based on, there was this uncomfortable silence in the theater the likes of which I’ve never felt before. This is a film that will entertain, engage, and unnerve. You shouldn’t just see this film because you are trying to do Oscar homework because it is a well-made film that has sold out three weekends in a role in my local theater for a reason. If you are under 21, and a young adult not a little kid, I’d strongly recommend you try to see this. Get your older friends or your parents to take you (this isn’t one of those films that shouldn’t watch with your parents) because it is worth it. One of the best of the year/Oscar season and I congratulate the film on its Oscar nominations. Expand

Don't let the score fool you; I wouldn't recommend this movie to anybody.

Before I tell my personal experience with the movie, let's get the normal critical review material out of the way. Bradley Cooper did an amazing job playing his character, as with the other actors of this movie. Top-notch. The cinematography was very well executed as well, especially with the shots through the scopes. I don't know why, but I don't see that too much. The soundtrack was subtle, but noticeable in some parts, which is what I'd expect. Some gripes though: This doesn't show the man that Chris Kyle was. A scene at the end did show respect for him, but honestly the rest of the movie didn't really do that. However, that's not the main point of the movie, as I'll explain in a bit, so that's not the main gripe I have. Character development was severely lacking in basically all other characters except for Cooper's. Still, these flaws don't affect the score too much.

Now for my personal experience with this movie. This movie is a war movie, through and through. When I walk into a movie theater, however, I expect to suspend my disbelief and walk out unaffected. Sure, it may be a crying movie, but still it's not real. This movie was too real for me. I walked out of that theater so emotionally affected that I said to myself that I'd never see it again. Not because it's bad, but because it's too real. I won't use the word realistic (even though it is) because that doesn't seem to be the right word. Movies are unrealistic; it's just something that's been shown. This movie was too emotionally affecting, and I don't want anyone seeing it because of that one fact. A lot of people are saying this is a war propaganda film for America. I'd say that it was doing the literal polar opposite. It was showing the true nature of war; a subject many film-makers are afraid to tread on. All in all, this is a great movie that, again, nobody should watch.

The action scenes were really well made, they looked very realistic; and it was pretty cool watching how the story is alternating between war scenes and family scenes, looking very believable and fluid. Bradley Cooper did mainly an excellent job, and all the crew also. Sadly, the main character is the only one you are going to care about during all the film, for you never really feel attached to the others, being this a big script problem, more than an acting problem. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After hearing numerous positive remarks over the new movie starring Bradley Cooper, I decided to go see American Sniper for myself. At first I was skeptical about Cooper playing such a serious role after seeing him in movies such as The Hangover and He’s Just Not That Into You. Just like the majority of women in America today, I am very fond of him and his acting and assumed he would do a great job performing any character in any type of movie.
My assumption was right. American Sniper was probably one of the top five movies I’ve ever seen and hands down the best movie I’ve ever seen in theaters. Luckily I was able to see it in IMAX at the Warren Theater opening night, which took my experience to the next level. The theater was completely filled and I had to wait an hour in line before I could get a seat. It was no surprise to me that the movie made approximately ninety million dollars in just the first weekend.
The movie was based on a true story about an American hero from Texas. Chris Kyle served as a Navy SEAL and had the most confirmed enemy sniper kills in the Middle East. The movie depicts Kyle’s life during the war as well as his personal life at home with his wife and children. It covers not only the aspects of war and his missions, but the detrimental effects war can have on a person’s life after they come home.
It also shows how much fighting in the war and serving his country meant to Kyle. He kept insisting to go back to Iraq for months and months at a time despite his wife’s strong efforts to keep him home safe. Being a soldier was clearly what he lived for.
I think this movie was done in such a way that it coveys a powerful message to the audience. It was really eye-opening to see how much veterans such as Chris Kyle go through during post-war time. Those who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder have extreme challenges to face during their everyday life, and that goes on to greatly affect their families as well.
In the end, Kyle ends up getting murdered by a fellow veteran he tried to help, who was in fact suffering from a severe mental illness after he returned from war. The impact this message delivers to those who do not know much about PTSD, or who underestimate its severity, can only benefit people around the nation.
I think this movie was entertaining, compelling, and exciting to watch. The director did an amazing job of putting the story together in a way that kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time. To sum it all up, I would highly recommend this movie to anyone because it shows what war heroes must go through to do their job and makes you truly appreciate what they do for our country.

I had seen some bad reviews, as well as good reviews - and there seemed to be a partisan divide between those that liked it, and those that hated it. Thus, I was an expecting somewhat of a propaganda piece comparing the Iraq war to apple pie.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. This is a gritty, disturbing, realistic, heart breaking, non-political piece about one man's motivation, action & reaction to war and all it involves.

Bradley Cooper is brilliant, and his eyes reveal a thousand shades of emotion. This film does not glorify snipers, nor does it glorify the Iraq War - if anything, it is a realistic portrayal of why & how our soldiers fought & returned to this quagmire with little understanding or support from anyone back home.

It doesn't matter how you feel about the Iraq war, this film will touch your heart & soul and help you understand those that fought in America's name, right or wrong.

I put this film in the category of "Deer Hunter" & "Platoon" as far as capturing the essence of the conflict, and the heart of those involved.

TheClint Eastwood applies his typical macho style to this superficially entertaining but cliché ridden war drama. Think of an inferior ‘Hurt Locker and substitute a beefed up Bradley Cooper in place of the slighter built Jeremy Renner. The film’s biggest liability is the screenplay which doesn’t have an original idea through its entire running time. As usual we have to endure the obligatory scenes of boys being boys and their irritating training routines. We watch dispassionately as Cooper’s marriage to Sienna Miller begins to combust as the war and his job as a sniper take their toll. We roll our eyes in disbelief at scenes where Cooper partakes of personal phone calls to Miller whilst at work in the war zone (Would that really be allowed to happen?). The end credits inform us that this is a true story and that the protagonist, Chris Kyle, was killed by a war veteran he was trying to help. Arrogantly, though, we are not privy to any further helpful information like why and how! It’s as if Director Eastwood feels that everyone will have heard of Kyle and know his story. That maybe so in America, but unfortunately does not apply to the rest of the world.
On the plus side the film is at least never boring and is actually very well edited. Cooper is very good and Miller, despite being saddled with some truly awful dialogue and the worst written scenes (her first introduction at the bar not withstanding), also acquits herself with dignity. The Oscar nominated sound is undeserving of the laurel, and one scene in which Cooper plays around with a gun in the family home struck me as being dangerously irresponsible in a film which has undoubted commercial appeal.

Reading through some of the comments it's clear that this movie threatens the liberal fantasy world where those defending us are some how evil, and those who are truly evil are somehow the victims.

Chris Kyle was a sniper who killed people who were vicious, heartless, and cared little for the value of human life. The film is an insight into the perspective of one man who fought in the war, and the complexity that comes with being a soldier. It allows us to see what Kyle experienced both as a soldier and as a husband, and the difficulty in being both.

This is not a rehashing of events, or a piece of propaganda as some would have you believe, but rather it is a powerful insight into what the men and women in our military experience, and demonstrates why those of us who aren't in the military, owe our servicemen a tremendous debt of gratitude.

American Sniper makes you understand Chris Kyle and how he saw the world. It speaks for him, perhaps better than the man spoke for himself. Whether you hate or love both the man and the film for that depends on your own moral character.

A politically divisive film with somewhat of a muddled moral message about the Iraq War, "American Sniper" is nonetheless mesmerising filmmaking and a haunting elegy to heroism, propelled by a sombre and gripping performance by Bradley Cooper.

Despite the subject matter, the movie has a relatively low-key presentational feel, and presents setting and events in a very neutral way. There is a sense of calm, objective narration which allows the audience to notice the significance of key points without needing the usual exaggeration or dramatic highlighting to draw their attention. In particular, the physical and psychological costs of military service to Chris Kyle, some of his compatriots, and his brother are made clear without melodrama or overt contrivances.

His meeting with his future wife, their marriage, and the increasingly stressful absences from his growing family during tours, punctuated by eventful calls home, provide the essential notes of what proves to be a tragic love story, given his unexpected and untimely death in 2013, only a few years
after his honorable discharge. As a recent news item, I assume this doesn't constitute a "spoiler".

The film has reportedly demonstrated broad appeal among both art house film fans and general audiences, and I've read a number of reviews suggesting that the presentation is compatible with diverse ideologies. I think the neutral tone contributes to this.

It's intended as a dramatic depiction of a true story, rather than simply being "inspired by" or "based on" real people and events (as with, for example, "The Imitation Game"). It is therefore constrained as to the kind of plot it could have or events it could contain without violating the integrity of the
film. The movie benefited from this by being less "Hollywood", at the price of having a plot which is in one sense less intense than something explicitly tailored to trigger audience response. That said, I would rate it very highly among the war and military-related movies I've seen, with the understanding that it's a straight drama, not an action/adventure or suspense/thriller film.

In a year filled with biopics and the many re-tellings of history, American Sniper is a stand-out. Similar to Unbroken American Sniper is way more than a war movie. It tells the story of a hero who just happened to earn the honor during a time of war. Bradley Cooper disappears into Chris Kyle, in what is one of his best performances to date. Kyle may have been the most lethal sniper of all time, who killed more than 150 people, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter. Not since The Unforgiven has a film really shown the pain that man faces after he has killed another man. In movies today we too often see characters kill other characters like it's no big deal but that isn't the story in American Sniper. Kyle was a normal man with a wife and two kids. He felt pain and it's a pain that so many veterans feel today. American Sniper made apparent the talent that we all know Eastwood possess; sadly it's a talent that we have seen less and less of in recent years. American Sniper is a great film in whole filmed with some of the most suspensful and moving scenes to come out of the year; above all the film is topped by an amazing and unforgettable performance by Bradley Cooper Expand

On that basis alone, I would consider AmericanAmerican Sniper tells the very moving story of U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle. The firefight scenes are exceptionally realistic, reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan, but with slightly less intensity. On that basis alone, I would consider American Sniper to be one of the top 10 war movies of all time. Bradley Cooper gives a solid, but emotionally range limited performance of a rugged individualist who never waivers in his understated, but rock-solid, patriotism for American. Kyle’s primary mission is to use his sniper rifle to guard and protect his fellow soldiers who are tasked with doing the door-to-door fighting in the streets of Iraq. He is so good at his job he ends up with the rather burdensome nickname of “The Legend”.

Kyle comes home for good after 4 tours of duty having killed more men, women and children than he cares to remember, mostly after having viewed them through his long-range rifle scope. Kyle is an extremely well-centered individual with exceptional mental toughness, but 1000 plus days of combat duty, combined with being so heavily relied upon by others for protecting their lives, is going to take its toll on you, and Kyle unconsciously copes with the stress by drying up emotionally and becoming something of a shell. Kyle’s wife (Sienna Miller) recognizes Kyle’s emotional withdraw early on in their relationship, but sticks with her man anyway.

Unfortunately, Director Clint Eastwood spends so much time in Iraq, that there is little time left for the movie to explore Kyle’s post-war life. The movie gives short shrift to exploring the depth of Kyle’s emotional damage, and how Kyle is able to bounce back from his war experiences and reclaim his soul. We are shown only a very short scene in which Kyle meets with a therapist who tells Kyle that there are still soldiers out there (returning combat veterans) who need him to rescue them. Kyle’s emotional recovery seems instantaneous, and Eastwood’s shallow treatment of the issue left me wondering what really happened. The end of the movie comes quickly thereafter. It feels like Eastwood ran out of time and simply shut the story down. If you don’t know the story, the ending is both shocking and very moving, and I won’t spoil it for you here.

This is a bio-pic, a story of Chris Kyle, the most lethal American sniper in US military history. Chris Kyle did four tours in Iraq.
He would accompany his unit, eliminating the threat to Marines when they go door to door searching for insurgents.
Clint Eastwood, the director of this movie, does not shy away from psychological problems that many veterans, including Chris, experience after coming back home and entering a normal life. Eastwood pays tribute to Chris's achievements and honestly shows extreme difficulties soldiers face in a battle and upon coming back home.
Battle scenes are very intense, dramatic and believable. The movie in some way reminded me of "Hurt Locker", but this film is about a real person, and not fictional.
Nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor.

However, I can't help thinking the reason most went to see this movie is so that we can breed more Chris Kyles to fight these sneaky wars where they use children, women, families and their own snipers to give their lives for a ridiculous cause: Killing Americans because they are financial successful and have religious freedom. Of course, when these Chris Kyles get back home, we'll have another problem, which is why he was volunteering, and why he was killed. But first we have to get rid of, or at least make a dent, into that evil in the world that affects our lives. If it takes a Chris Kyle, then so be it. The message in this movie is powerful. The world is crazy, and it's sad to say, we sometimes need people like Chris Kyle to give us a temporary respite. Negotiating or reasoning with them hasn't worked, so, shoot to kill. But I don't find Chris Kyle to be honorable, and certainly no hero. The truly honorable sharp-shooter was Sergeant Alvin York in WWI. That's a true hero who killed only when his fellow soldiers were being killed. In that case, he had no choice and although an admitted pacifist, he also said the same thing Kyle said almost 100 years later, Alvin also killed to save lives. Expand

First of all is interesting theAmerican Sniper marks the return of Clint Eastwood to war themes, like most of his movies what he is trying to accomplish here is to reveal the point of view from a selected character towards life and death. First of all is interesting the scenario in which the story takes place, the objective is to show how it changes people, in this case the ascension of Chris Kyle from nobody to US legend, and even more into some kind of god that watches over his child from above. Although what happens in Irak doesn't stay in Irak; and the failure in the protagonist's adaptation to the normal world is another thing that the director adds to this reflection; this is why Kyle will do what ever it takes to protect his family. Now I'd like to quote Walt Kowalsky's phrase from Gran Torino: "the thing the haunts a man the most, is what he isn't order to do"; since the viewer sees the trailer of this movie, he understands what we are speaking of. Every soldier of any other war in history excuses himself in his superiors, no one takes the responsibility, because they can't carry on their shoulders the guilt; here lies the inhuman strength of the protagonist and because of that transformation, he no longer belongs in our world. Clint Eastwood once more demonstrates what he is capable of and with a Bradley Cooper that is building himself a great career in acting. Expand

The dialog was pretty typical. Still can't get over the un-menacing do-rag'd appearance of the ultimate enemy constantly disappearing into the dusty background.

Overall, I think it's worth a look though. It had a lot of patriotic themes, but by no means does it glorify war or killing. Many of the characters are conflicted over their actions. Having said that, all this nasty guttersnipe directed at the memory of Chris Kyle is horsesh*t. And kudos to Mr. Eastwood for having the courage to make a move which honestly portrays some of the aftermath our soldiers deal with. You can be liberal and/or anti-war but still respect the service and sacrifice of our brave men and women!

Clint Eastwood did an amazing job directing this film, and I can understand why Chris Kyle picked him to direct it. Something that made this movie so unique was how it touched upon the character's personal life back at home, rather than just the action and war scenes. In comparison to Lone Survivor, that personal background is definitely something that was missing. This movie accurately portrays Chris Kyle as the hero that he was, the number of lives that he took is far less than the number of lives he saved. The way that he died truly bothered me for days until I saw his wife talking on national news. One thing she talked about was how Chris died. She said that the way he died really portrayed who he was as a person. He died helping a veteran, and it goes to show that he truly was a service person, always doing good for others in any way that he could. Expand

Cooper is excellent as the title character, and Miller confounds expectations by matching his performance as his long suffering wife. There is a moral and ethical argument to be had here about the evils of war and whether or not we should be glorifying someone who is, to all intents and purposes, a stone cold killer, but that isn't what Eastwood is interested in. The enemy are deliberately kept at a distance and never become anything more than cyphers, but what Eastwood has crafted is a brilliant war film that, like the soldiers it depicts, gets on with the job without too much concern for why they are doing it Expand

Certainly an interesting movie. Coming in, I wasn't sure what to expect - a piece of propaganda? A touching and scary story about PTSD? Action on the battlefield?

Well, it turns out it's a mash of everything. It's about Chris Kyle, a top-notch American Sniper. It goes between a soap-opera-ish movie with his wife and an action/drama during the war scenes, but it mixes very well. Cooper is unrecognizable with how buff he is, and he nails his role.

It's pretty intense, a bit smooshy is some parts, but overall pretty touching. I would recommend seeing this movie.

That said, Cooper was very believable and without his stability the movie would have failed. The Iraq action scenes were fantastic and engaging, although by Tour 4 I had had enough (probably the point, but still). The non-Iraq scenes were very flat to me. The last 20 minutes or so were even more manipulative than the preceding 90. While I honor the military and respect those who fight for their country in service, I am not sure this movie helps the cause. I think a film more centered on the PTSD and VA aspects post-war would have been more engaging, although I realize the Chris Kyle story requires build-up of his 'legend'. And why was he holding that cocked pistol on his wife at the end? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An okay film that could have been great. But based on the source material, I'm surprised it was even okay.

It's an action movie with something to say. It's also a drama with barely anything to say at all. Cooper pulls off an impeccable performance as Chris Kyle, which cements the young actor as one of the most consistent working today. His work doesn't save this film however.

Chris's actions, as a character, seem to be morally ambiguous, but what worries me is all of the Kyle fans that will go see this movie. Will they interpret everything Kyle says as morally distinguishable fact? Or will they see him as a character, and judge some of his beliefs as wrong? Eastwood seems to display some of Kyle's radical beliefs towards Muslims as a people without contradiction.

The technical aspects of the film were almost perfect. But some foolish choices when it comes to some of the writing decisions, such as trying to turn what could have been a polarizing thought-provoking character into an easy to relate to southern family man with a big heart, the story suffered.

If you want to go into the effects of war on the psyche and conscious, don't make it seem as an entire race of people is expendable and can be blown away without consequence or a second thought. There was a chance in this film where a Muslim family "hosts" soldiers for dinner. The family is later revealed to have evil intentions. It's missed opportunities to make a solid point that is ditched in order for a more simple, redundant point that make this film simply okay.

By trying to force Chris Kyle's incredible life story into a 2+ hour traditional film format, the story did little to no justice on Kyle's impressive accomplishments, both militarily and as a man. The result was a very jumpy and shallow viewing experience where you didn't feel a connection to Kyle's SEAL teammates or his wife, Taya. The actors, namely Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, did the best job they possibly could've done with the script they were given. The script was the best it could've been when trying to fit into the cliched 2-hour time slot. But it all comes back to the decision to make this into a movie. It just wasn't possible. There were also some directorial decisions that I found highly questionable but they weren't major nor were they things most people would either pick up on or care about. Ultimately, this review should end on a high note though, so I will point out the strongest element of the film: the ending. The closing 10+ minutes are incredibly moving and deliver, what I believe was the entire purpose of the film itself. They leave you in awe of the man, the myth, the legend. The decision to leave the remaining credits without audio was also a genius decision. I've never left a theater and felt like I was leaving a funeral. I believe that is the appropriate feeling that this movie should portray and I commend Clint Eastwood for making that so. Expand

The film stirs a massive controversy in the states albeit it has achieved a career peak for the octogenarian film legend, as there is a pungent odour of jingoism permeating the narrative, particularly centres on its defamatory depiction of Muslin race in the Iraqi war zone, what is exacerbating is that under the current international circumstances, it doesn’t help to dissipate the acute prejudice in the stateside, pitifully, Eastwood could not been more open-minded in his well-executed anti-war drama.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not much for war movies but I enjoyed this one. It seems most people's complaints are how this movie is a "patriotic, war-mongering, propaganda piece," but I didn't see that at all. Me and my wife thought that the film somewhat satired the "patriotic, war-mongering, propaganda" agenda due to the portrayal of gungho soldiers ready to get revenge for fallen comrades that ends up becoming an endless cycle of verve and loss. After all, it seems that humanity is the enemy itself, not just the Iraqi militants. Yes, the main character depicted loves and fights for his country, but the film captures his loss of humanity and purpose as the "fight for freedom" melds into a trophy hunt of revenge.

For those saying Cooper's, Chris Kyle is represented as having no depth and only as a mindless soldier, he has clear progressions and regressions of character in the movie. The effects of war dull his emotions but it's blatant that during those tours, war is home for him. This sacrifices his ability to cope and interact with civilian life, well depicted.

I do agree, however, that a movie paralleling both lives of the snipers in this film would have been great. Definitely worth a watch at the theaters or when it comes out to rent.

What works in American Sniper is that it's more than your average war movie. The action is still there in brutal and exciting form. Standing beside that action and ultimately eclipsing is the true story of American sniper Chris Kyle.

We get to actually know him, or at least enough about him to make us care. As a result there is a heart and soul to the movie to keep things going. Seeing the effects the war has on Chris Kyle's life, particularly his mind are compelling and emotional.

American Sniper hits on familiar beats we've seen time and time again in war movies. PTSD, soldier talk, and the problems faced back home aren't new themes to the genre. However, that doesn't make them any less potent here. Thanks to strong direction and great central performance from Bradley Cooper, American Sniper has some real weight to it.

Quite enjoyed this. Felt it was a bit too black and white in terms of the morality of the Us/Iraqi forces, but a good character study of the main protagonist. Also enjoyed the battle scenes and how they were interspersed with the "back home" time.

American or Non-American

Finally last night I got a chance to watching the last film of the Mr Clint Eastwood. (One of the my popular director)
For me that Gran Torino (one of the Eastwood’s Movies) always being in my top ten choice when I make a list for best movies that I have seen so far watching American sniper was a great shock.
In Gran Torino distance between nations or better to say human more than any time seems shorter and shorter as far as Eastwood as an impatient American man who has experience war in Korea savior or better say sacrifice him for non-American boy from the same geography (east Asia)but in American Sniper Bradley Cooper in the role of Chris Kyle in response of advisor question that asks whether Sometimes think about 160 men that were killed in Iraq, Says more than that, it pains him to why more people are not killed to protect the lives of American soldiers.
Eastwood in the final scene of gran torino sending him as the old man of story to the conscious death without having weapons for that non-American boy of story could live more comfortable.
But in one of the American sniper scenes Chris Kyle in response to the cries of his wife who desperately wants him to stay with his American family rejected her request and perhaps killing Mustafa in his mind.
It’s time to put aside their weapons and ending unnecessary crisis in the world.

Just like Fury isn't a movie about World War II, American Sniper isn't about the Iraq wars.
Nor is it about 9/11 and it's aftermath.
And certainly not about an American Sniper.
This movie is about America.

This is what a hero should look like according to yourself, Eastwood tells us.. Did you not decorate him? Did you not buy his biography in droves. Did you not read the book from cover to cover? Did you not gulp down the story of an all American blond haired, blue-eyed Caucasian guy with a pretty girl-next-door wife, who goes out to protect the greatest country on earth?
A man of duty?
A man of inner nobility?
An all American hero?

This is why it doesn't matter whether the movie is set in Iraq, the Outer Hebrides or Middle Earth.
This is why it doesn't matter who the enemy is.
And this is why it doesn't matter whether the movie contains a truth or not.
The only thing that matters is the larger than life depiction of an unblemished hero.

And Eastwood doesn't hold back and goes one step further.
The American sniper invades, for it matters not.
The American sniper shoots enemy soldiers, because they are not.
The American sniper takes out women and kids, because they are not.
.
Any unease that an American soldier might have shot a someone in violation of the Geneva-convention is taken away by clearly depicting the enemy for what they are: they are orcs

Is that what really happened, America? Was every civilian death such a clear case of the enemy using any means whatsoever and thus justifying a reaction in kind? Did you really wait for the civilians to show their hostile intent before gunning them down?Did the fog of war not exist? Or did you flatten their houses and mow them down with machine guns before they could become a threat? All to protect the greatest country on earth?

Perhaps it was Eastwood's intent, or perhaps not, but the movie is a mirror to what America is not. The more shinier the American sniper becomes the starker the contrast with reality this picture is.

The American sniper is all what an American soldier should be like..
So unlike reality..

The more talented movieWhat it's like to be a soldier in a modern war? What is the price of military glory? For those, who want answers to these questions, two ways are opened - direct experience or experience mediated by the art of cinema. The more talented movie makers, the more authentic experience they can mediate through their art to public. The "American Sniper" is exactly such kind of art.

Bradley Cooper is as convincing as an actor can be. You don't feel him acting, you just see person, which Cooper impersonates before you. You see his emotions, deeply hidden, but glimpsing from the depth. And there are choices, Kyle made. Choices, about which we, civilians, even don't want to think about. We are mostly living in imaginary world, hiding from horrors of reality. Well, soldiers can't hide from it - they must face it or they'll die. They must make choices, horrible, inhuman in terms of civilized behaviour. And many of them became broken, actually losing their humanity in the process.

The phrases, Chris said - about common people, behaving as usual like there is no war there; that he can't allow himself to be home, while others are still fighting; about military brotherhood - all of them are so recognizable. That's exactly same words, which you can hear from Ukrainian soldiers here. Even dehumanization of enemies (calling them "savages", etc.) is understandable - otherwise it would be hard to justify to yourself terrible things you are doing (there is ingenious episode in the George Orwell's "Looking back on the Spanish War" where he recalls that he refrained from shooting at "Fascist" partly because of a small detail, which humanized his foe:"I had come here to shoot at "Fascists"; but a man who is holding up his trousers isn't a "Fascist", he is visibly a fellow-creature, similar to yourself, and you don't feel like shooting at him").

This reality they meet, these choices they made - all of it bring soldiers farther and farther into the web of war. And nobody comes back from war unscathed. You can't just go home from war - it will follow you. The things, you've seen, the choices, you've made - they will haunt you wherever you are. If this movie will help others to realize what sacrifices soldiers are really making out there - behind the borders of usual life - what price they are paying, then cinema art is worth its invention.

Wonderful movie from Clint Eastwood - 8 out of 10.

This film does a great job of portraying the horrors of PTSD, a disease that many soldiers suffer from. The downside to this film though is the director, Clint Eastwood. During some scenes it seemed as if Clint Eastwood was trying to depict all people living in that area as "Savages". In the world we are living in, there is a lot of bigotry and xenophobia around the world especially in America. But through and through this is a good movie and is worth your time to watch. I don't know but as a movie, it does its job at being entertaining. It isn't necessarily a must-watch but for anyone who thinks this movie looks interesting, you'll probably enjoy it. It's not only a war movie but a movie about family and about what a war does to soldiers (meaning mentally as well as physically). It shows how dark war really and it doesn't necessarily glorify the American army, although I'm sure plenty of people feel that it does. This is my opinion, though, so see it for yourself if you haven't already. Telling the true story of American sniper Chris Kyle, American Sniper plods along through four very long tours of duty with no real point. War is not hell here. The opposing forces and people are "savages." The American soldiers brave and powerful. And yet, despite all this director Clint Eastwood seems to be making a flag waving patriotic American celebration. Or is he? And that's the problem. The film lacks all conviction and becomes just a long bore. If you've seen the absolutely brilliant trailer, you will totally miss the moral dilemma inherent in that 60 seconds. The film which runs over two hours never hits that level.
