This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful and Intriguing While this film has its moments of action, it is more of a postmodern mystery than an action/thriller.

This is because the real intrigue in this movie comes from piecing together the clues spread across the film in order to understand what really happened. This requires some patience and so definitely isn't for everyone and is perhaps more for fans of movies like Tenet where you might need to watch a second time or rewind to catch new details. The key is - you must watch to the very end to understand the whole story.

Speaking of details, there are numerous pop art, pop culture, and modern art references of varying obscurity and this is what enables second or third viewings. And while some of the Tarantino references might be too overt (though a nice homage), on the other hand, many other art references are quite obscure, such as the two-tone modern art statues at Michael's house representing the duality of a man outside the film and in the film likely represent the duality/conflict in Michael's life between family honor (tradition) and self-actualization (his art). Also, it took me a while to discover the connection between the song “Heart of Glass” by Blondie used in the dive bar scene and that Andy Warhol had also created pop art prints of Blondie’s singer Debbie Harris.

The film's major traditional strengths lie in the set design, lighting, and cinematography as the visuals are often stunning and the film can be appreciated merely on this level much of the time.

Overall it is an interesting movie to watch. It first appears like a typical Hollywood action movie but has more going for it under the surface as you peel back more subtle artistic references, piece together the narrative clues, reflect on the unexpected postmodern characterizations, and find that it is a piece of pop art in and of itself.

I really enjoyed the movie's visuals and primary color theme. It was aesthetically pleasing to watch and I enjoyed the action sequences. The plot is definitely not traditional, but I think it mixes with the the story line.

Definitely some Tarantino's vibes but overall "American Night" has its own identity, given primarily by the fact that it draws upon a context, art, which is not so often embedded with action movies. Definitely worth a watch! And giving a shot to young directors is always a nice thing to do! Expand

The writer/director’s name (Alessio Della Valle) of this stinker, may now need to be added to those 'must-avoid' lists. Is this the product that can now be expected to clog up our screens, made by those who grew up watching over-baked Sergio Leone, Tarantino, etc, movies? If so, heaven help society.

With apologies to some, here is a story as superficial as the ‘art’ it’s inspired by. Warhol and Pollack were ‘artists’ selected by the ‘Promote American Art’ Economic Contingent of the CIA, with the sole intention of pushing American art into the Super-High price range of its European counterparts. And, as Big money most assuredly corrupts both art critics and sellers, these ‘deals’ served the purpose by spreading the myth...that’s become today’s blind ‘reality’ (you can fool or buy most of the people most of the time).

This foul, bullet and blood-laden swear fest, drags its way through its own slime to its seemingly interminable conclusion (even at half its 2Hr length this mess would seem overlong) Perhaps some bikie gang members may last the distance, but viewers seeking substance will need to protect their heads by making a U-Turn, before letting this lowly, pseudo-intellect sewage into their lives. Watch the box office returns take a nose dive - It's all grotty style and no substance.

The film had an interesting plot by shifting to different views and moments in time giving different angels of the story. I thought the action sequences were good, and really enjoyed the film aesthetically. Expand

Loved the movie! Making new films and revisiting such over exploited genres is not really a piece of cake, but this is actually a good effort with nice results. Also, for all Warhol lovers out there, this is your movie!
