The intermingling of the real life participants in the story with the actors who were playing them gives credibility to the film and creates an interest and excitement with a deeper dimension than one might otherwise expect in a crime drama. Written and directed by Bart Layton, with a cast of little known actors, this is a film that not only holds your attention but draws you into the problems and pitfalls the would-be robbers face as these novice felons engage in the planned theft. Truth here is not only stranger but many times more interesting than if someone has simply imagined this sequence of events. I give the film an 8 for not only being entertaining but also for the unique manner in which the story was told. Expand

Since this movie is based on a real event, the filmmaker staged the story with actors interspersed with interviews from the actual perpetrators. Not surprisingly, the real people are more compelling than the pros. This doesn't play out like a typical heist, but more of a cautionary tale. The performances and plot are interesting, but this is more a drama about misguided youth than the mischievous caper that sells it. Expand

Heist movies are not my favorite genre but having seen good scores for this film I made my mind to give it a try.

The movie exceed my expectations. I would rather characterize it as a mixture of a psychological drama and a documentary describing a real robbery that took place in 2004.

Not only the movie has an interesting idea but that idea is also implemented flawlessly.

There is a group of four young guys (most of them college students) who plan to steal old and very valuable artifacts from a university library.

The same story is told from different points of view.

As events roll out, here and there there are series of interviews with real participants, not only crime perpetrators but also their parents, teachers, etc., recalling events, contemplating on them after so many years. That adds another dimension and depth to the movie.

Superb acting and a great script.

There are moments of genuine tension and excitement, it’s hard to make a heist film completely devoid of any, but then it has about three faux endings that drag it on and on. Solid performances, nothing you’ve never seen before.

‘American Animals’ is the best film I’ve seen so far this year. And that also includes being the most innovative, as I can’t think of any other movie—from any other year—that’s been presented in such a unique way.

Writer-director Bart Layton presents the film as a hybrid between narrative and documentary, perhaps 80-20, by laying out the story but also cutting away to the real life people who were involved with the situation for their thoughts and reflections on what happened.

The main reason why ‘American Animals’ is so effective is that it focuses on the tension and anxiety these kids are feeling before the heist … and the mixture of dread and regret afterwards. In turn, Layton elevates the film to a higher emotional plane, giving it a visceral sense of depth that no other movie has been able to match so far this year.

With Hollywood’s constant praising of SJW’s and cuddling of hypersensitive millennials, it was only a matter of time before a film came along as a rebuttal.

Bart Layton’s AMERICAN ANIMALS follows the extraordinary and thrilling true story of four college friends with seemingly good lives who risk it all when they plan to steal 18th century rare books from Transylvania University.

What sets this film apart from any other film out this year, is Layton’s flawless and clever unification of documentary and narrative – blurring the lines between fact and fiction – to the point where one can’t even trust the film’s protagonists.

In a feat of creative ingenuity, he spreads the dramatization of the audacious daytime theft with post-prison testimonials from the real criminals who organized the heist, who end up serving the narrative like a Greek chorus commenting on the action taking place.

This sets the narrative stage as Layton and co. take the audience down a painfully truthful path of the fraudulent American dream that the millennials have all but taken as biblical.

Ideologically, it is a prophetic story of a lost and increasingly individualistic generation fed on a mantra that its lives would end up being interesting and remarkable in some way, only to one day realize that reality is much harsher than the fantastical virtual world they live in.

AMERICAN ANIMALS is the millennials’ version of Icarus.

In the myth, it is young Icarus’s ego and his blind outlook on freedom and life that brings him to his fall, and in Layton’s film, it is that same blindness and reluctance to let go of their fantasy that causes the four friends to fall as well.

The film’s narrative is not the only thing that makes it easily one of the best films of the year so far.

Layton’s vision and choice to incorporate elements of documentary filmmaking alongside tropes from the fictional movies the young men emulated in the heist, mirrors the protagonists’ increasing detachment from reality – taking the audience further and further down the rabbit hole of delusion, and ultimately the rather hopeless and heartbreaking end of the film.

The audience knowing that this story is actually not fictional, though it is being told in a fictional manner, pulls the audience in and brings them that much closer to the characters – and this is why the film succeeds.

Everything about the film is grounded in a reality – this is certain – the way it is presented however is where the artistry comes into play.

The cast is just beyond superb.

Evan Peters steals the show once more, there is nothing this young man can’t do. Peters is a thinking person's actor — and this is clear in the way that he delicately brings out a character's nuances.

Barry Keoghan, whose performance in THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER horrified audiences, returns to another awkward and albeit internally and emotionally torn character.

Both actors play off of each other with such great ease that it is hard to believe that they are not the characters that they have embodied.

Structurally, the film’s execution is a home run.

Never has a film infused fiction and reality with such an emotional and genuine punch, where no decision comes off as gimmicky or forced. On the contrary, every decision, every visual echo, and every word spoken was organic and more importantly necessary in order to deliver the film’s overall theme.

AMERICAN ANIMALS is not for the faint of heart, it is not for the idealists, and it is not for the dreamers – it is a much-needed wakeup call.

Millennials have been brainwashed into believing they are special, they can take on the world, that their uniqueness, and not how much effort they put in, is their ticket to success, and when they finally realize how difficult life is and how merciless reality is, they come crashing down as their wings burst into flames.

Layton’s film gives voice to the generation of young people who are unable to express their individuality and end up turning to the corruption of the American dream.

Cinematographically, Ole Bratt Birkeland, the film’s director of photography, delivers on every level keeping up with the cast’s charisma and emotional power, the narrative’s high energy tension, as well as its shifts in perspectives and accounts.

Not one shot in this film is bland, and not one camera move redundant, but rather educated and purposeful.

Lastly, AMERICAN ANIMALS has one of the most interesting soundscapes since A QUIET PLACE, from earlier this year.

Just as the visuals shift between narrative and documentary, so does the sound shift from diegetic to nondiegetic adding to the blurring of fiction and reality.

Though, 2018 has been a rather dull year so far in the box office there have been some out-of-this-world powerful films, and AMERICAN ANIMALS is one of them.

Its much like what is done in a true-crime show, so it is nothing revolutionary or anything, and more impact could be had by just waiting to show the real people until the end. But the film was enjoyable for the most part, until towards the end when imo the drama of their heist did not match the serious tone, and felt over-done and overly dramatic at that point. It was not quite a life-or-death experience which rendered it less impactful, although it was still enjoyable to watch, especially if you enjoy heist films, and the planning and such. Expand

No doubt about the plot outcomes, even if you do not know anything about the "score," going in. And the filmmakers are willing to make the leads the object of fun and pity in equal parts. When the inevitable finally occurs, in just a few short strokes, the terror/reality of a federal felony arrest is accurately portrayed. If you are looking for pure entertainment, go for it. If it is insights that you want, you might look elsewhere. A law enforcement person watching this film laughed out loud throughout the screening and had the best time. Directed by Bart Layton, American Animals is based on the real life story of Spencer Reinhard, Warren Lipka, Eric Borsuk and Chas Allen and their plan to pull off an incredibly risky heist of the worlds most valuable books. Half drama, half documentary and well worth your time for anyone who enjoys a good heist movie.

Set in Lexington, Kentucky in 2004. Spencer (Barry Keoghan) and Warren (Evan Peters) are bored with their unremarkable lives and long to experience something more. Spencer takes a tour of his university's special collections library, home to some of the most valuable and rare books in America and describes this to Warren which sparks the unshakable idea that they could pull off the worlds easiest heist and get away with it. What starts as an idea and just talk becomes more and more real for the students. Yet it soon becomes apparent that pulling off a heist in real life isn't quite like the movies. A solid main cast that all have great chemistry together, particularly from Peters and Keoghan. I'll watch Evan Peters in almost anything and his performance in American Animals is wonderful. It's a chaotic and a nail biting crime movie made all the more intense by the interviews and how all four recount the events in their own way. A dramatic re-enactment with real interviews throughout the entire film really has you invested in the story and if like me you had no idea as to the details of the real heist then it makes for some exciting cinema. It's a fast paced and highly immersive story with moments of hilarity. Not all the cinemas took American Animals for some reason but don't let that stop you, it's well worth your time and it's highly recommended.

The story itself, despite being real is not that great, it does have appeal and it's interestinf but let's say the reasons behind what the boys did are more attractive than what they ultimately did, their heist.

American Animals has a good rhythm, it's captivating. The narrative style jumps a lot between the dramatization and the interviews more than what I would like but it's never disorienting. The work of the actors is also very good and consistent; Barry Keoghan continues to surprise me and if he continues like this then good things are coming for his career. Evan Peters also leaves a pretty good impression and both of them are who carry the most dramatic weight of the story.

American Animals combines drama, comedy, suspense, a heist story and a documentary style and things went well. This is a very entertaining and rewarding option.

American Animals

3 Out Of 5

American Animals is a character driven heist feature that is nothing like your usual heist for its cunning methodology is beyond the shallow ideology that it attempts to achieve. It might be safe but the stakes are higher than ever (unlike any other features, it does communicate and creates the anticipated impact) and it might be honest but is undeniably unstable. And the primary reason is its way of fumbling on landing on any sequence at a definite point which leads to and effects similarly in its final act. Having said that, there are few moments shot with such excellence that it leaves the audience in an awe of it where the awareness of Layton; the director is so sharp and precise, of its created bubble which doesn't pop but explodes like nine dynamites on your brain. Layton's metaphors barely works in fact if anything it gives away the intensity and credibility whenever its subtle nature starts to fade away. As mentioned earlier, the tale is more questionable for the audience, on terms of adapting a rigid structure for them to hold on to. The sound effects are sweat-drop effective with stunning camera work that accounts in the surrounding appropriately with a chunk of crispy visuals. Layton; the writer-director, has exceeded its script with brilliant execution skills that foliates with essential emotions on screen. Peters is as loud as he should be while Keoghan stands back and inhales in wisely and portrays with conviction.

The writing is gripping, if not smart and adaptive if not layered, as the makers might suggest. The catastrophic incidents, the chemistry among the characters and insanely hectic subjective procedure are the high points of the feature. American Animals is an accurate capturization of humane behavior at its peak and pit with no commercial threads manipulating or mutilating it.

This movie felt like it was exaggeration at times and feels really deep and emotional at others.
The acting was really great though, but sadly not even the actor's performance can carry this bad writing and sometimes sloppy camera angles and cinematography. The only good thing in the directing is the way the story unfolds and reaches it's crux. The true events and the real characters are the real rescuers of this movie. It's a morally grey story that is driven by greed and depicts very well some inner conflicts we are having withing ourselves some times. The protagonists are also antagonists, which fits great in to the story.
Overall it's and good movie which could have been so much more if handled well, written and shot better.

TheAside from the committed, and decent performances from the entire cast, most notably from Evan Peters who proves that he's one of the most talented young actors around, it's the movie's third act that made me barely like American Animals. The last act has some of the best hold-your-breath scenes I've seen this year. Case in point, the entire robbery sequence that really got on my nerves. Due to the impeccable editing, especially the sound editing in the mentioned scene, the movie left me mostly satisfied despite all its flaws, or maybe it's only one grave flaw that causes the others.

Fine acting, superb editing, perfect use of the soundtrack, and good cinematography. That's all the good this movie has throughout its entire runtime. So let's talk about the issues I've with American Animals. For starters, using the documentary style, and showing different opinions is a risky decision that if it was used wrong would be nothing but a cheap gimmick to get the attention. I, Tonya used a similar technique last year and it was good for the most part, I actually thought it would have been better if it made much use of it, but here it wasn't just useless, and didn't add to the characters, or serve the plot, but it also was very distracting and off-putting.

The second issue is that the movie never settles on one way to tell its story. It starts using this documentary style, which I thought it was interesting and promising at first, then the movie almost neglected this style or rather the most interesting part of it which is the different point of views, and what we got were some interrupting scenes of the real four young men explaining and justifying what they were feeling at these particular moments, and why they were doing so. I mean really! Is that how to tell a story, and develop the characters?!

The planning for the heist, and collecting the gang were kinda interesting. But after that, the movie chose a formulaic way to keep going; such as, the let-downs, and the regrets. And while these phase showed glimpses of adding real depth to the characters, a thing that was almost made me ignore the clichés, almost every dramatic moments felt forced, and the movie just didn't give enough time or prepared for these potentially affective scenes. Let alone the interrupting documentary that did nothing but preventing me from being invested even for a moment.

Comparing what I've praised to what I've criticized, I usually would a movie like this 3 stars, 6 to 6.5 out of 10, but this above-mentioned robbery scene blew me away. It has Fincher's rebelliousness, and Aronofsky's uneasiness mixed together but without being offensive. With that said, I can't give American Animals less than....

Going in, I thought it was going to be a fairly typical heist movie, except that the heist was going to be performed by some college kids who had never committed any major crimes before, so I expected a fair bit of comedy. But, this isn't your typical heist film. It's actually a film that is a blend of a documentary and a drama. The real life criminals provide their side of the story, and then their side of the story is acted out in a cinematic way, with the real life criminals making appearances throughout and sometimes altering the story, resulting in an altered cinematic portrayal. Each criminal involved remembers things in different ways, or isn't even sure if what they remember is true, so the film shows some of the several possibilities of what actually happened. It was something different from what I've been seeing in the theater a lot recently, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story follows a group of college-aged dudes who decide to steal some very valuable books from a university library. The whole idea of the heist gets started when one of the guys, Spencer, talks about how he wants a change in his life. That change he desires, apparently, can be achieved through this heist. He doesn't realize at the time how far it will inevitably go, though, and as the story progresses there are plenty of twists and turns. I was entertained nearly the entire time. The heist preparation, and then the tension building as heist day finally comes, is fantastic. There was a dip right at the start of the third act where it lost me for a bit. Not very long, but my level of attention did drop for a few minutes. But then it eventually hooked me right back in, and I have to say I was satisfied with how it wrapped up. It's entertaining, different, and actually pretty damn funny at times. Expand

"American Animals" was an especially ambitious heist film that attempted to blur fiction/non-fiction lines and occasionally employ surrealistic elements. It was mostly well-acted, reasonably well-written, and directed with great care. Yet, somehow it came up a bit short for me. Ultimately, I don't believe the filmmaker was able to execute his ambitious vision for the film. Using the real-life characters to share in the narrative responsibilities was fantastic at times: it was often funny, clever, and informative. Maybe there were times when it felt too clever and too informative; maybe cutting back and forth undermined the continuity of the drama being constructed. I'm not sure. But it made me very much aware that I was watching a movie. I could never truly got lost in the story. On a different note, I agree with others that the pacing got awkward in the last third of the film. Tension would build up, resolve, and then fail to deliver. There were genuinely suspenseful moments that didn't lead anywhere. At times, the film seemed to have plateaued. There were at least two points when I believed the film was over. It was just tough to know what the director wanted the audience to experience. When the film finally did end, I was left wondering why. In all, it was a decent piece of filmmaking that wasn't especially powerful or fun for me. Maybe I just missed the whole damn point. But if I'm gonna trust the director to take me on a joy ride, I need him to deliver a little bit more joy along the way. Expand

How to turn to cinema the spatio-temporally accomplished nihilism of postmodernity, in its planetary contagiousness and in its historical acuteness? We have a deluge of examples, indeed perhaps the problem is the exact opposite: there are no longer exceptions. The absurd of the twentieth century has exited from the niche culture and has now become a mass, popular and mainstream one. The mentioned "Reservoir Dogs" (1992) is an explicit statement of a plausible turning point. Then the director heads to the parts of "The Bling Ring" (Sofia Coppola, 2013) or "Posh" (Lone Scherfig, 2014), adding a pleonastic elusiveness of the truth to this umpteenth apologia of nothingness.

I thought it was interesting that the people involved are interviewed in between scenes of the reconstruction of what happened and also, more generally, that what happened took place in a college library, as I'm not sure I've seen such a heist/crime film set in a college library before. It also explains what happened to the main characters at the end of the film (its based on, I believe, a true story) and at the start of the credits rolling at the end, we're shown some of the detailed paintings from the texts that were targeted in the heist the film is about, which I also found interesting.

Some of the dialogue/script is pretty witty and thought provoking and I thought it was an entertaining watch, so I'd give this a 7/10 rating. Yes I'd recommend the film.
