Amelie is a masterpiece of "Jeunetian" optimistic poetry, that interestingly clashes with the dark poetry of his previous films yet seems to simply be the flip side of the same modern-poetic coin. In other words, no oneAmelie is a peculiar movie, starting by the protagonist, a lonely and strange girl who grows up thinking that the family love is dispensable; and because of that she creates a circle of no affection that surround her. In other words, no one can get emotionally involved with Amelie. Noticing that, she decides to change and take the path of justice, giving everyone what they truly deserve, no matter if it is a good or bad lesson. The only problem is that Amelie is focused on the external and not in herself. Using the phrase of her old neighbor: What is thinking the woman with the cup? (This is undoubtedly a metaphor of Amelie), If she takes care of the people problems, who will takes care of her own issues? The answer is Amelie, but she is too introverted and cowardly to face the reality. Only the man who collects photos can fix the situation.
Full of magical details, overwhelming music and very interesting performances, we are witnesses of this quaint love story, which ends with a breathtaking motorcycle ride.

Watching an artisticallyReading the less than favorable user review box has reminded me of what constitutes a good movie in America these days. People consider themselves trendy if they travel half-an-hour to view "Her" on limited release. Watching an artistically driven movie on their mac with English subtitles? Give me a break. I wonder if people who granted this movie a 5 or below actually booted it up expecting to be impressed. Was this reeeaaallllyyy their type of movie? I was reading one obnoxiously ignorant commenter who condemned the movie on its lack of "suspense" as if that is the backbone to all great movies. Perhaps in a blockbuster by James Cameron, but hardly at all when you scour the depths of Indie classics. Another commenter criticized the "Romantic Comedy" (it receives this genre on Wiki…seems like that's where all movies are jammed into) on its lack of humor. Personally, I found it to contain clever humor at times, but it wasn't a movie with an intention to make people howl with laughter. That would kill the whole vibe of it. Nor was it a movie that inserted jokes in left or right knowing that people would at least find a few of them funny. It was all beautifully subtle. Sorry, about the rant, but I'm sick of how people today approach a move like this one, thinking themselves intelligent by giving a positively reviewed movie bad marks, without grasping the movie's entire purpose. I guess it's comparable to when a bunch of buffoonish Americans trot into a French fine restaurant and leave with a bad taste in their mouths. Expand

Thirty-five. That is the approximate number of times I bellowed the
usual two-word, seven- letter refrain at the screen while watching this
abomination of cinema. That would bring the total number of instances
I've bellowed this phrase at a movie to perhaps forty. Every other movie I've ever seen is a better movie than 'Amelie', but
it will appeal very well to people who'd rather live in a different
universe. It picks up real, living humans and uses them like toys, like
terminally uninformed parodies of humanity. It squanders reality. See
that bar-maid there? That actress playing her is probably a fascinating
woman - I'm SURE she's a fascinating woman - people tend heavily to be
fascinating. Sadly though, this cartoon of a movie allows no
manifestation of any side of any of its performers' personalities to
show through at any point. I have never, ever been more infuriated by a
movie. Jean-Pierre Jeunet's previous film was 'Alien: Resurrection',
which goes part-way, but not all the way, in explaining how this movie
is as bad as it is. Although there is ever so much more to be said, that's about all I'm
going to say about 'Amelie'. I'd like to tell you that this is because
the film's Hadesian wretchedness is beyond my ability to properly
describe, but that would constitute a falsehood on the scale of
'Amelie'. The truth is that I am dismayed by the idea of exerting any
more mental energy contemplating this grotesque puppet show. That the
film receives such unbroken acclaim is a dreary testament to the desire
of so very many people to escape from any form of recognizable life.
For Jean-Pierre Jeunet to spit in my face would be so much kinder than
what he did to me by making this movie it would constitute an
atonement.

(Note: Buried in the film's sound-track is one of the greatest songs
I've ever heard; a version of 'Guilty' sung by Albert Bowlly in 1931.
An acquaintance haplessly gave this film to me, and afterwards I told
her that, although it was the single most detestable film I'd ever
seen, without it I'd surely have gone the rest of my days without
having heard that sublime melody, and was grateful to her. My
relationship with that song will end only at the hour of my death,
unlike my relationship with this film and its director, which
terminates with the completion of this sentence.)

Naturally as soon as Amelie is old enough she wants to venture out into the real world. She feels like an outcast but soon realizes that the people in her life feel like outcasts for one reason or another and she sets out to do the things for them they will not do for themselves to make them happy. Unless you are heartless it will be impossible for you not to find Amelie endearing, and most of us can probably relate to her insecurities in one way or another. As Amelie works through her insecurities and tries to do something to make herself happy, as well as those around her, our fondness for her grows and grows.

The title character is not the only thing that Jeunet does well in Amelie. The supporting characters are well thought out and blend perfectly in Amelie's world. This film is also beautifully shot. There are many breathtaking frames in Amelie. His use of color is also impeccable and adds much to the visual tone of this movie. The casting of Tautou can also not be overstated. She is perfect in this role, I can't imagine another actress playing her as well.

The themes in Amelie are not unique and are presented in a straight forward way. But rarely have I seen them done so well, with such an endearing character, and with the style of this film. Amelie is an endearing feel good film that I will enjoy coming back to again.

With quick cuts, lively editing, and an all around frenetic pace, Amelie whisks you into the world of Amelie, a lonely girl living outside of Paris. After discovering a small box belonging to a boy 40 years earlier, she seeks out the owner. Eventually, she continues to do nice things for random people, never seeking recognition, but simply wanting to watch a stranger smile and be happy for once. A shining light in a dark world, Amelie also manages to make its audience smile. It is just as funny as it needs to be, but is entirely heart warming throughout. It is also really well made. It is well shot, the colors are so lively and seem to really pop in this film, the direction is strong, and the acting is really good. What's even moreThere's no doubt that Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "Amélie" is the quirky face that launched a thousand ships. Having seen so many movies that have lifted from this without really seeing it myself is honestly kind of embarrassing. What's even more embarrassing if how lukewarm I am on it. Don't get me wrong, I like it just fine. It's pleasant, fanciful and idiosyncratic, but — for me — a lot of that is to a fault. Not all of the quirk rubbed me the wrong way, but there's definitely a decent amount in this that felt like quirk for quirk's sake. In addition, while the story ultimately gets the job done, I really wish the main cruz of things (Amélie and Nino) evoked as much emotionality as some of the other subplots in here. All in all, I'm definitely glad I saw this, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed. Expand

I watched Amélie with English subtitles, since I do not speak French. If I can connect and understand a movie so well, even when the dialogue spoken is in a different language, then that is the mark of true genius.

Although this is a foreign film, it didn't feel awkward or messy, like some other foreign films I've seen. Instead, it played out well with a moving soundtrack and beautiful cinematography. The shots of Paris were breathtaking, and the acting was very well done. Love was in the air in this film, with some very funny and erotic scenes entailing. The dialogue, although in French, was still very well-spoken and had a sharp wit to it. I don't want to give more away if I don't have to, so I'll just say don't take your kids to this film until they're at least 16 or so

Amelie is a strange birdAmelie: 6 out of 10: Sweet, light and sometimes a little irritating this strangely adult fable starts out very strong and sinks under the weight of it's too cute for words protagonist and her self made predicament. Amelie is a strange bird indeed. She seems initially one of those wonderfully original creations but as time in the movie marches on it becomes obvious. She is a twelve-year-old girl in a woman's body.

Yup she has silly crushes plays silly pranks and a vivid imagination. In fact one could very much see her being played by a twelve year old. This would work perfectly if the movie wasn't so jarringly adult in other ways. (Amelie's quest works in a porn shop, people having hook-up sex in a daytime café)

It is more of a tone issue than any objection to adult content. (As a glance at most of my other reviews will testify.) Also like most twelve-year olds Amelie pulls pranks and games a little to long. (After the 2-hour mark or so I was practically screaming at the screen to get on with it)

Now don't get me wrong the first hour or so is one of the most delightful screen experiences. I loved the traveling gnome (which started a fad that lives on today) and liked the obsessive tape recording man in café.

It also shows a true fantasy version of Paris like You've You Mail's New York. In fact when Amelie is helping others rather than on her own quest the movie seems to move briskly and with purpose.

It is only in her pursuit of love that Amelie fails as both a person and a movie. Just like most twelve-year-old girls.

But I just know one thing that this is the great-comedy movie. Unique, but so touchable. The movie what The critic called it "The Real Sugar Rush" is mixing something that very very irrational thing but somehow it wasn't. Amelie Poulan always make me so reasonable to choose what the next scene will come, but she make it nothing and that was always make me mad but I don't know, I feel happy and the same time I laugh. Why? Because that was always hard to catch what exactly I expected what the next scene will come. The movie always real but somehow it's not.
Well, Amelie is the great quality comedy film, because it serve something unique and different with all of its fun and its bearing on all the appearing. The movie brake the usual in the world of comedy film facade.

J'adore Amélie. We may not live in a fairytale but beauty is all around us. Magic exists. It's in the simple things. It's in the love we share with ourselves ,our family, our friends, our lover. Great movie, great music

As an adult, she moves to Paris and starts working. Quickly, she changes the way she sees the world, beginning to try to improve people's lives through small acts of kindness. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and with Guillaume Laurant dialog's, it revealed to the world the talent of Andrey Tautou.

European cinema has never had the importance and visibility of American films. It lacks the money and power of large corporations of Hollywood, able to invest billions in a film and all the merchandising and advertising that it usually takes. But sometimes this lack proves to be a quality for European cinema, which increasingly focus on quality, artistic care and the beauty of art. This is the case of this film, exceptionally beautiful and striking. What amazes us more is the beauty of the plot and the moving performance of Tautou, who lent talent to her character, giving it an authentic soul. It's rare to see a movie with so much beauty, so many positive values and good thoughts, being reported as if it were a fairy tale of our time. The costumes are very good and paired well with the romantic scenery of Paris. The photograph is one of the most original and unique that I have seen in contemporary cinema, thanks to lighting and color it have. Another valuable item is the soundtrack, absolutely amazing, signed by Yann Tiersen, and it's impossible not to know hums it or whistle it.

Currently, the film industry leaves little space to the film as a work of art. Because of this, it's good to see a movie that favored the artistic side in it's design but also achieved commercial success due to it's quality. Thrilling, touching, profound and poignant, this film is pure art and deserves a place in the table of the best films ever made in Europe. It's unfortunate that there are so few like this, and it's unfortunate also that the major industry awards have so little concern for it. This film would have won many Oscars if it had been made in U.S.A. and had a multimillion-dollar company behind, but it wasn't the case...

The real standout of this movie, for me, was Yann Tiersen's simple-yet-sublime score, which captures the setting of the movie so perfectly. Furthermore, the environments the characters exist within also feel as though they are perfectly matched, only adding to the movie's charm.

An excellent and relentlessly adorable love story, featuring a plucky protagonist who exists in a world full of character.

I have to recognize the original idea is as awesome as the way events are shot and edited. All along the movie has that strange energy pouring out of itself and that will not leave you indifferent. Unfortunately a lot of varied movies have follow the same path during years and watching 'Amélie' these days is a bit unconfortable due to its age.

Amélie (the main character) is lovable and attractive from the beginning. Her acting (Audrey Tautou) is awesome. As the movie starts by enunciate some real and fictive dramas, having empathy for her is quite easy. But as the plot moves on she begins to be little by little annoying, useless and inconsistent making the last thirty minutes a pain to watch. Other characters are also interesting as almost all of them evolve in a certain way. Too bad some of them go from being a huge cliché to become another indecent cliché. Overall acting is really rich even in french (my mother tongue which allowed me to watch the original version), and god knows how acting in french movies can be dreadful.

Original score from Yann Tiersen is perfect, there is no other word to qualify it. However that doesn't excuse the director to loop the main theme in way too many scenes eventually making it a bit boring and repetitive.

So there was a certain murkiness to its drive. The overall aim of the story seemed to be to make the audience giggle, and in that it did a fine job. I giggled plenty while watching it. But then, I'm prone to giggling.

On that note, the tone of this movie was ironic. There is great tragedy at its core on many fronts, yet the tone is ceaselessly light. I came out of it feeling like I'd learned nothing but enjoyed the process.

One of the strengths of this movie was in the acting. While most characters were two-dimensional, the actors did an excellent job of finding the nuance in their roles, thus bringing 2D into 3D, and making the characters (and thus the film) more loveable or relatable.

Direction-wise, I'm left pondering a 'chicken or the egg' scenario involving Wes Anderson. The use of a very invasive narrator is/was charming, but after a certain amount of time grew a bit tiresome. That said, I think most of the choices made to create this film were good ones, and it was paced perfectly. The other great strengths of this movie were in its art. The score was a perfect whimsical soundtrack, bolstering the tone. Cinematically, the shots were designed with that same whimsicality, as well as playful coloring. Most of the mystery played out through deft camerawork, too. And finally, the sets, locales, and costumes boosted the story as well.

Overall, I found this film very enjoyable, and yet it didn't have that certain something that really wowed me. Most of it felt light and easy, but little of it felt truly novel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In any form of art, the work of an artist is exposed to unforgiving criticism. I am more of a music "expert" than a cinema passionate. However in all my years of watching movies, I cannot recall (for now) watching a movie with opinions as opposed as the ones concerning Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain.
Personally, I think this movie is one of the best french movies, and one of the best movies I have ever seen, and I have had the hardest time understanding why the negative ratings were so negative. People seem to find it either excellent, or absolutely horrible and void of any interest. I do not disrespect people who dislike this movie, forcing somebody to agree with me would be both stupid and impossible. I have thought about it for a long time, and after rewatching it several times, I think I understand.
This movie has a very unique style, story telling, characters. When I watched it the first time, if I had to use one word to describe it, it would not have been "beautiful", "fantastic", "moving", but something along the lines of "Atypical".
It is the kind of movie where you are either sucked in at the first second, or that completely bores you.

I personally was not a fan of cinema when I first saw this movie, and even today I am far from being a specialist. But I have found this story to be very touching, well told, the music in this movie is simply flawless, and I could relate so hard to the simple little actions that can make your day, such as helping a blind man to find the metro, diving your hand in a bag of seeds, or sending someone 40 years back with a simple gesture. The lighting and camera work is also very enjoyable, and the actors are perfect in this little world that this movie builds. I certainly love it, and will show this to my kids someday. For me, it has been an unforgettable experience.

(also this is my very first critique and I am half french, so there may be some mistakes in my writting, which I of course apologize for).
