I have never done cocaine, but this film is what I imagine it must be like. An overwhelming and messy but still very entertaining experience, if you enjoy Michael Bay you are sure to enjoy this one!

This one keeps lots of his spectacular sensibilities, but in a more limited environment. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a gruff, seasoned bank robber who recruits his "brother" (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) to be the getaway driver for his latest heist. Natch, things go horribly wrong and they end up in the titular vehicle with a wounded police officer and an EMT. After the fast-paced robbery and ensuing shootout, the rest of the film is one long chase with impressive stunts and dozens of cars crashing. Bay's love for fast, fluid camerawork has amped up with his dizzying drone shots. Of course, the editing keeps the action on its toes and Gyllenhaal adds a few comic asides. If you can ignore the insane absurdity of the whole premise, this is an over-the-top wild ride. Expand

+Awesome thrill ride, no let up in the pacing and direction, a welcome return to form for Bay if familiar territory
+Stellar performances by the 2 leads, especially Jake G

A fun time all around.

I really enjoyed the mix of emotions the movie gave. Also tons of nonstop action. Not your ordinary Robbery Movie. I loved it.

Ambulance is tailor made for the big screen. I learned absolutely NOTHING by watching it, and yet I was still amazed by the shear spectacle of it all. Thumbs up! Expand

I very much enjoy explosions and car chases and this movie does that pretty much flawlessly. It's your typical Bay film so if you don't like any of his other exciting action packed films, then you probably won't like this one either. It even has a couple of gnarly gross scenes with a ruptured spleen and half of a guy's body and legs distorted in a grizzly way! I was surprised at that. There is plenty of violence and action and fireworks here to impress any fast paced action fan.

Oh, and the acting is pretty good, too. I've seen a lot, LOT worse. Unfortunately people who have the most ridiculous standards in movies will give any decent movie a 0 for no reason. Just ignore the impossibly low scores. Those types of people even give the best movies 0's just out of spite. This one is easily a 7-9 range for most people.

Michael Bay is one of those directors that I really admire. You can watch his movie and just know "that is a Michael Bay movie!". You can watch his movie and just know "that is a Michael Bay movie!". He has a unique style and an absolute love for nonsensical action and explosions. An unfortunate flaw of Michael Bay is just the very dumb story and writing in his movies which is a slight shame. Therefore, I didn't have high expectations for his latest movie but I was intrigued because legendary actor Jake Gyllenhaal was going to be in it. The premise is "Needing money to cover his wife's medical bills, a decorated veteran teams up with his adoptive brother to steal $32 million from a Los Angeles bank. However, when their getaway goes spectacularly wrong, the desperate thieves hijack an ambulance that's carrying a severely wounded cop and an EMT worker. Caught in a high-speed chase, the two siblings must figure out a way to outrun the law while keeping their hostages alive". So is this one thrilling Bay chase or one that needed stopping?

Firstly, the main actors are all phenomenal in their roles by giving 110% in every scene, even if the dialogue is dumb. I love the chemistry between Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jake Gyllenhaal who play the brothers, Will and Danny respectively. They bounce off each other very well and they portray the love and conflict of the brothers excellently. A surprising standout is Eiza González who plays the EMT and is held hostage. She managed to feel like a believable EMT in what is a ridiculous and over the top movie which is honestly impressive. Additionally, what is surprising in this movie is the amount of heart put into the story. The brothers have a caring relationship but one is truly kind and the other kind of sociopathic. This leads to conflicts between the two but in the end there is still this brotherly love between them and I got invested in these two characters. The EMT, Cam, might be the core of this film as she is the one who is brought into this madness. She truly wants to help people and this results in her conflict that I won't spoil but it ends up being very interesting. The action scenes are also a blast to watch but that is to be expected from a Bay movie. What sets this apart is how suspenseful the movie is. Most of the movie is just spent on this long chase sequence and it is very intense stuff. Bay loves explosions but he doesn't use them much in this film which I think works better. It makes it more impactful when an explosion does occur and I respect him for not overdoing it like he always used to do. One new quirk he does though is the amount of drone shots. It is like he discovered a new toy to play with. Luckily, it ain't done poorly and I did like how he utilized it. Legendary music composer, Lorne Balfe, is the one who does the music score and it is amazing. This film wouldn't work as well if it weren't for his score as it makes this long 2-hour chase more exciting and thrilling. However, a quirk from Bay movies is still here and that is the silly dialogue. It is still here and some of it does feel very silly and even pointless. There are also some very nonsensical things that are just questionable. For example, the robbers do not cover their faces and use their real names. Cops just driving into things and off cliffs like absolute morons. The movie also feels a bit too long than it needed to be which causes some slow pacing at times. It is 136 minutes which is way too long for a movie with barely a plot to it. If they cut down on some pointless dialogue and shots that last for a bit too long, you could easily reduce this film by 20 minutes.

Michael Bay’s new movie, AMBULANCE is over two hours of non-stop action. Combining a bank heist in which the bank robbers are forced to use an ambulance as a getaway vehicle with a critically wounded police officer and paramedic held hostageMichael Bay’s new movie, AMBULANCE is over two hours of non-stop action. Combining a bank heist in which the bank robbers are forced to use an ambulance as a getaway vehicle with a critically wounded police officer and paramedic held hostage in the back while being chased by helicopters, police cars and motorcycles.
In many ways, the story is like any other chase movie but, unlike many other modern movies in the genre, Michael Bay has chosen to do all the stunts without CGI and uses actual human stunt men and women. This makes the action all that more impressive.
Jake Gyllenhaal, of course, is the standout performer with his complex character, but the supporting cast are also very good. I particularly enjoyed Eiza González as the paramedic who has to carefully navigate dealing with the two robbers while trying to keep her patient alive travelling at high speed.
Of course, AMBULANCE requires us to suspend our disbelief given that most of what happens would be impossible in real life. But that’s what popcorn entertainment is all about and it’s all done in Michael Bay’s frenetic style with him using almost every cinematic trick in the book.
The complexity of the two brothers’ relationship and personalities does offer an interesting layer to the story.
You won’t be surprised to know there is lots of violence and endless car crashes and, just occasionally, a touch of humour to relieve all that tension.
AMBULANCE is an ok piece of entertainment and, to get maximum enjoyment, it needs to be seen on the big screen.
