It's hard to talk about the irony of enjoying these kinds of films when we continue to feed a cycle that has never stopped. The cycle of war.

War is part of human nature. For as long as we have existed in large numbers we have sought to destroy each other.
I mean we talk about the futility of war but the first film with the same message was released 12 years after the end of World War I and only 9 years before the start of World War II. Conflict was inevitable.

Almost 100 years after the release of that film, we are seeing fascism showing its face once more and in Europe the shadow of war is once again present and once again we will be watching how young people must go to die.

But we are talking about movies and my opinion about it is that I really liked this adaptation.
It's a very good film, superbly crafted and with very good performances when needed. It is entertaining and infuriating with its heavy dose of brutal segments while also reiterating its message, and it's among the best Netflix has distributed in a long time.

It fails to adequately capture the nihilism and despair of the book which the 1930 American version actually did better. the cinematography is vastly inferior to any WWI movie made before (Paths of Glory and 1917 are much more compelling). The Compiègne negotiations are laughably preposterous and thrown in as a distraction. It's just a paint-by-the-number Netflix exercise. As usual. Expand

With astounding battle sequences — as intense as gory —, the film shines for its production design, photography, and editing. But it's Felix Kammerer's acting that steals the show; it's through his face that we get to see the nightmarish world that war is. There's also a political plot that gives some context, but I think that could've been developed more because it disappears during the third act. Either way, I hope this film gets the nomination for Best International Film next year. This isn't another 'Come and See,' but its anti-war message sure comes at the right moment. Expand

Unable or unwilling to show war as it really is brings into sharp relief the other failings of the film particularly the loud and obnoxious horn that blares every few minutes for no reason at all. I haven't read the book or watched the 1930 American movie but I sure as hell am going to now. All Quiet on The Western Front may not be a masterpiece, but it isn't far from one. The Cinematography, Acting, Action, and overall Directing are masterful. The action scenes make you jump in your seat and maybe if the movie was given a couple more days to fine-tune the CGI like some of the fires (yikes) the movie would be completely immersive. But overall, this movie while maybe not be as great as the book or the 1930 American one (I'd have to watch them first to decide.) this movie is fun yet sad at the same time. I'd love to tell you more but firstly I would ruin the experience for you, and secondly, It's 11:36 pm.

In short. Good job Netflix, It's finally not only Breaking Bad keeping me from deleting you from my browser.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been watching and reading all quiet on the Western front for around 30 years. This new show is exactly what you're expecting from Netflix. It looks pretty and the visuals are really great. The acting isn't bad but they have poor diolauge and only the man who plays Kat does a great job and is relatable in anyway. Instead of conveying suffering and anti war messeges it's just a gore fest. Nothing else. The original in the 1930s is much better as you connect with the characters and get emotionally connected to them..the new one I didn't care at all. It's extremely unrealistic as well in regards to war. It's basically a modern Hollywood war movie and they got rid of all the compelling aspects of the book and original. Worth a watch but it's not memorable or really engaging. Expand

The novel behind this film was a huge bestseller at its time, so we know that it should work as a script. We know that 1917 was a masterpiece, too, so the World War I theme is fine. But what is typical for German filmmakers is this: long wide landscape shots that feel out of place and not like in 1917; weird, sometimes erratic music composition with a composer who spent too much time at the theatre; heavy-handed screenwriting which feels as if something crucial is missing; on the other hand, the actors are often okay, and the scenery, the props, the effects too. So, I'd say that this film suffers from the typical German film dilemma of bad direction, bad composition, and bad screenwriting because this is sadly the issue of contemporary German filmmakers, with surprisingly few exceptions. (I also loved "1917".) I especially appreciate how it juxtaposes the intense suffering of the soldiers with the luxuries of those in charge, who send these men to battlefields without any cost to themselves. (For more on that last note, read Sassoon's poem "Base Details.")
I've been fascinated by the sheer pointlessness of WW I since reading Wilfred Owen's poem "Futility" many years ago. You can also read his "Dulce et Decorum Est" for the way that these young men are lured by lies about the "glory" of being soldiers.
Kudos to these filmmakers for not letting us forget the "War to End All Wars"on a very large, cinematic scale, yet also centered on soldiers whose camaraderie only intensifies their agony in the end. And for what? Nothing.

The latest version of this time-honored 1929War is hell. We all know that. But do we really need to be reminded of that? Given mankind’s propensity for conflict, one might say yes. However, how emphatically need that message be stressed? The latest version of this time-honored 1929 anti-war novel by author and military veteran Erich Maria Remarque tells the story of an idealistic young German soldier (Felix Kammerer) who sets off with friends to fight in World War I, seeing it as his patriotic duty and a grand coming of age adventure. Before long, however, he experiences the brutality and futility of combat as he watches his buddies die horrific deaths under deplorable conditions. And, as the story wears on, the film depicts the extreme emotional and physical stress it places on soldiers in the waning days of the war immediately prior to the November 1918 armistice that ended the fighting. In doing this, the picture shines a bright light on the perils of wartime atrocities and blind nationalism in its attempt to drive home the story’s anti-war message. Nevertheless, for a production that professes to convey this sentiment, it incorporates a plethora of exceedingly graphic battle footage, so much so that it often verges on dangerously disturbing combat porn that drones on seemingly endlessly. It’s almost as if viewers are subjected to a cinematic symposium illustrating the myriad ways that people can be killed. While it’s one thing not to hold anything back, there’s such a thing as overkill, and this offering definitely pushes those boundaries. In light of that, writer-director Edward Berger’s latest is an overlong, tedious, difficult watch whose primary thematic intent is overshadowed by its visuals, a problem that tends to dilute the value of those scenes in which its principal aim is achieved (albeit eclipsed). It also never attains the heroic quality of a film like “1917” (2019), instead opting for an uber-realistic, in-your-face, supremely depressing approach. To its credit, the cinematography of this release is often compelling (if gratuitous at times), and Kammerer’s lead performance captures the range of conflicted emotions his character experiences. But, despite the many accolades that the film has received thus far, the filmmaker’s take on this tale is all a bit much for me, just as I suspect it might also be for many would-be viewers. Expand

All Quiet on the Western Front looks great. A good picture and editing make comparisons from 1917, but this is completely wrong. Germans, unlike Americans and British, are able to make war films and well convey the atmosphere and spirit of total war without heroism and pathos. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just loved this film! It follows Paul, a dashing young German cadet, and his irascible best mate Tjaden, on their daring escapades and brushes with peril during the great adventure that was the western front. Warning! Spoilers ahead. Like all good war stories, they get a heroes welcome when they ride back home into Brandenberg— piked helmets gleaming, uniforms fresh pressed with bright gold lapels, and a crowd of German girls waving imperial flags. Paul catches eyes with Heidi, the cobblers daughter who he’d promised to marry on the day he left for France, and who he wrote to when the going really got tough out there and for a moment he thought that war and honor and duty weren't as exciting as his beloved old schoolmaster Herr Kantorek had made them out to be when he walked the whole graduating class of ‘14 to the enlistment office to answer the call of Kaiser and Fatherland (though Paul had too stiff of an upper lip to admit it to Tjaden or the other lads out there on the line, and the feeling passed soon enough before he was ready to saddle up his beautiful chestnut courser Wilhelm for another courageous raid on the hapless tommys). Anyway, back to the heroes welcome! When she locks eyes with Paul, Heidi bursts into the biggest smile and her bright eyes fill with tears of joy. Paul tosses her his iron cross and she catches it as she pushes to the front of the crowd. Paul reaches down and in one big motion sweeps the young beauty onto his horse, buxom as ever with her green lederhosen and braided golden hair. Paul and Tjaden draw their sabers and hail each other farewell one last time, now heroes of the Reich, before Paul rides off with his bride to be as the band plays Die Wacht am Rhine This adaptation is really a fun jaunt and I couldn’t have asked for more- the gallant cavalry charges, the jovial young Bavarian lieutenant, the German marching songs, the imposing figure cut by gruff old General Friedrichs as he rouses the men to battle, big as a house upon his grizzled war horse and puffing a pipe between barking orders. It really is just a beautiful painting of all the pomp and virtue of the glorious old Prussian army, brought to life on the silver screen. 10/10. Expand

No disrespect to that film, as it obviously walked so this could run, but we've come so far with technology and the medium in general that it's honestly unfair to really compare the two. Every technical aspect of this film — whether it's the staging, the effects, the cinematography, the editing or sound work — is top notch and nearly flawless. The performances are all harrowing and raw and the experience, as a whole, is just so rough. Rough, yes, but in the way that it really needs to be. After all, the greatest war films are all truly, emphatically anti-war. This is unmistakably so. Shall we tack it up as one of the greats? It's got my vote. Expand

Really great visuals and sound, the story also (I mean it is based on the existing story). Really shows how the war can impact lives and whats more this time showing it from the losers side in WW1 , not like usually from winners.

You will not see much "action". The movie has no hero. You see the war from the very bottom of the common soldier starting on 1917 when the war was for a long time not "heroic" anymore. It was dying senselessly in the trenches in a meanwhile lost war. Who has seen other german war movies like "The Boot" or "Stalingrad" knows that german war movies are not heroic. They show the war how it is. The movie is good but I give -3 points for a too overdramatic staging, a bit soulless characters and an enerving music theme. A bit less drama and bit more character play please. Expand

There's no heroism, no pride, no honor or duty here. Only death and self-centered ambitious of men that should've known better. The acting raises to the occasion and a certain scene when our main character tries to shut the gurgle of a dying enemy is especially punching. One of the best films that released this year or the ones I've seen so far, anyway. Side note: I watched the movie after playing the campaign of the new COD game and, I know I shouldn't say it, but the stark difference of how war is portrayed in both of these artworks is really telling on how we've come to see war as a fun past-time. What interested me most about watching this film was that it was WWI, which we don't see as much in films compared to WWII, and the fact it was from the German side instead.

What stands out the most is the amazing production value. The set design, the costumes and the setpieces are all phenomenal. They perfectly portray the horrific, dirty and brutal nature of the war. The actors are all great in their roles as well. Felix Kammerer plays the main character, Paul Bäumer, and he gives a terrific performance in showing Paul's gradual loss of idealism throughout the movie. The cinematography by James Friend is oddly beautiful with some gorgeous wide shots that contrast the closeup shots of the War with its grimness. The music score by Volker Bertelmann is quite odd as well with its sudden thumping horns but they work in elevating the tension by foreboding what's coming.

My only complaint is that the film is quite predictable. It goes through every trope you would expect from a 'War is bad" movie and nothing in the plot surprised me whatsoever. It's also a little difficult to care for the characters as we barely spend enough time with them apart from the main character and an older soldier called "Kat". Apart from that, it is quite a stellar war movie that still delivers on the cruelty of World War I.

Nothing new on the cinematographic front. Unfortunately it is not an auteur film, one of those that, after havin' metabolized pacifism and antimilitarism, tries to deepen the subject in search of the origins (even metaphysical) of evil, hatred, horror. Already Kubrick took about 3 decades to go from the 1st to the 2nd level, that is, from "Paths of Glory" (1957) and "Dr. Strangelove" (1960) to "FMJ" (1987). Also Spielberg took a minimum of time to transition from "Saving Private Ryan" (1998) to "Band of Brothers" (2001). The best directors hit the mark on the first try: Coppola with "Apocalypse Now" [1979], Klimov with "Idi i smotri" (1985), Nolan with "Dunkirk" (2017). In 2019 Mendes' "1917" had few functional scenes to delve into the darkness, while "Platoon" (1986) should be considered as one of Stone's works dedicated to tackling the dramas and myths of his generation, Eastwood's 4 feature films (the Gunny of "Heartbreak Ridge" [1986], the 2006 diptych "Letters from Iwo Jima" & "Flags of Our Fathers" and "American Sniper" [2014]) have other goals, the same for "Life is Beautiful" (1997) and "The Tiger and the Snow" [2005] by Benigni, "M*A*S*H" (1970) by Altman and even "The Thin Red Line" (1998), where Malick applies his typical stream of consciousness to this genre of movie. Perhaps Berger's 147 minutes serve just to sensitize Netflix's clientele to the current war events, but they do not know how to go further: the immediately following Spanish flu caused many more deaths and in a shorter chronological span.

Compared to the original from the 30s, this movie holds up pretty well, altough it should be said that of course the different narratives, from all movies and the book diverge in some places. I still like the originalCompared to the original from the 30s, this movie holds up pretty well, altough it should be said that of course the different narratives, from all movies and the book diverge in some places. That is not a bad thing. I still like the original version from the 30s more, yet this movie accomplishes the feat of humanising the soldiers who are thrown into the grinding and dehumanising machine of war better than its predecessor. And I also like that this is an entirely German production with German actors, really adds to the authenticity of the movie. However, if that's the main goal of it, can be disputed; if the sole reason of a movie was to be authentic, you'd be better off just watching a documentary.
A surprisingly good Netflix movie, not one of the best ones I saw this year in general, but definitely domething memorable.

I don't know the original book or previous films. The film is visualized terrifically on Netflix. It takes a lot out of you and has extremely violent scenes.

Blatant war cinematics, which draws on the full in the middle part.

That all sounds pretty good at first, and it is, but ultimately the film wasn't able to convince me. It's well done, no question, but I clearly missed more depth in the characters, maybe more scenes at the beginning as the initial euphoria turns more and more. Ultimately, the fates of the individual characters didn't have the effect I had hoped for.
Acting was pretty good for the most part.

Especially the end part had great tragic moments, e.g. at the hour of the armistice, but also some that didn't convince me so much.

In the end, it's a well-made war film that manages to convey a tragedy, but it just couldn't bind the characters to me as much as I had hoped.

THE GOOD: A technical achievement. I specially LOVED the score and sound design, both award worthy. Felix Kammerer is great.

THE BAD: It doesn't offer anything new to what we have already seen in the war genre. Maybe a bit overlong.

And after that, the film has the power to transform the environment into a character. The only thing that does not fully become a character in the film is absurdity. Absurdity in relation to the First World War and history in general should relate to survival, not condemn it. History is not just the past. History is the moment when an event happened and all the factors that happened through it are connected to create a very thought-provoking image. In my opinion, this can be a very correct definition of history. (Of course, an epic definition) if absurdity condems the survival, it can act as a trigger for war and add value to it. Absurdity must be related to survival. Of course, this issue is less visible in the final parts of the film, but also in the beginning of the film. However, the very correct atmosphere of the film, without wanting to be captured by the music, not only covers this issue, but also becomes one of the most remarkable features of the work.

Also, the film is successful in conveying human emotions in a direct way, but it does not do this entirely in a cinematic way. A powerful thriller.4/5/5

Of course I wanted to write this comment few days ago..

The book is one of my favourites of all time, how Paul and many of his friends in the war fall disconnected from violence, separating themselves from other germans. How he loses everything on a day so insignificant in the war. Though he and the other soldiers think otherwise, they are still bound by a humanity, how a futile and personal death can still be so heartbreaking. I then rewatched the film, making sure that I was wide awake. Despite the slowness of the film, mimicking the pace of the book, It lands so perfectly. It's not trying to shove violence down your throat like many other war films, it's depicting the suffering war induces. many say that All Quiet on the Western Front is a pro-war film, it's not. The happiness the soldiers emit while talking together is later ripped apart by the suffering of the war. A scenic film, depicting the tragedy and suffering the First World War could lay upon even the most disconnected soldiers shaped by the war. Expand
