Want to know how to make a strong, powerful character who is still human and relatable to both men and women?
This is how you do it. Rey and Captain Marvel havn't got **** on Alita.

My boyfriend and I liked it a lot. We loved her huge eyes which reminded us she was different. We would love to see how they filmed those action scenes where she did all that strenuous move, ents. We’ll probably buy the dvd just to see that.

Honestly forget the critics on this one. Yea there are some tropes, corny elements, high-school romance, mediocre acting but this movie is just overall an awesome sci-fi action film. Just watch it you'll probably enjoy it.

I liked this movie as much as I liked Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, if not more. So I wondered about how certain critics could like one very much but dislike the other.

Firstly, I think Alita just didn't do enough to become more westernized and critics expected that to negatively affect the overall reception. They forget that audiences that watch movies for entertainment can still enjoy a movie despite some pacing issues and cheesy dialogues here and there. Its kinda like that feeling when you introduce someone to your favorite show, and when you are re-watching with them you think "oh this part is kinda slow/cheesy maybe they won't like it and they probably will question my taste etc etc" I'm almost certain that's how some of the critics felt, which led them to giving it a harsh overall review/score despite the fact that they sound like they themselves actually enjoyed it.
Sometimes it is better to be more honest with yourself than trying to be objective with something that is better reviewed subjectively. Let statistics offset your inner "fanboy-ism", because there are guys that genuinely did not enjoy the movie. Secondly, it just takes more effort to get into a new thing compared to indulging in familiarity/nostalgia. "What the hell is Scrapyard, what is Zalem" vs "Okay this is modern New York and this is Spiderman" is just 2 completely different starting points. Personally I embraced the world and character-building, and I did not think there was a significant lull anywhere. It's nice to get into a new world sometimes instead of revisiting the same universe (MCU, Star Wars).

Lastly, I guess it really rubbed some people the wrong way when a movie raises more questions than answers and then finish with "to be continued". Personally I rather have as many movies as possible versus jamming a long story into a 2 hr movie because that's how adaptations often fail.
Think there's also a bit of double standard going on, especially with how Infinity War ended...

So please disregard critics score (and mine too) and give this movie a shot just as a thought exercise on the disconnect between movie critics and actual audience.

The movie is mostly true to the source material, Rosa Salazar lends the movie an emotive and entertaining performance, the action sequences are the best I've seen in a while, and the CGI is the best I've seen since Avatar released around a decade ago. The only downside to this movie is the romance feels somewhat rushed and the story pacing can feel slightly fragmented in parts; however, I believe that is one of the downfalls of adapting source material that contains multiple chapters into a movie that hopes for sequels instead of a series, so I won't really count that against them. Best of all, the movie shoots to entertain its audience among its various areas of competence as opposed to trying to push political rhetoric. I hope to see multiple sequels as a result of this film's success! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. FIRST off... the critics dont know what they are even criticizing. They talk about things as if they didnt know what they were looking at. If your familiar with the source material youll be very happy. If not than expect a very differant movie from anything thats out there.

Saw it and loved it. Initially i was put off by the big eyes, but as I saw the movie it didnt bother me. Alita blended in with the live action very well. And Her facial expressions are what caught my attention and made me care for the character. There is an emotional aspect to Alita that is endearing. You root for her, you feel for both her Victories and losses. FOR THE GENERAL AUDIENCE: Its entertaining, Action is well done, Characters are well written and the CG effects are awesome. You will fall in love with the character. She is indearing. The issue for some, might be the pacing. For those unfamiliar with the source material, the story moves along pretty fast and its hard to get why everything is happening. Alot is going on and you dont know why. First off you wont have an origin story or know about her past or whats up in the floating city or about the main villian. That is because the story is very long and these things are revealed accross multiple books. The movie is all SETUP and CHARACTER DRIVEN. Alita embodies strength and endearing qualities in one. She is deadly but also very human. Her losses and victories shape her character and that is what drives the Narrative of the movie. So dont expect everything to be explained. Again and its very important, those things that were not revealed is what drives the narrative and events of whats to come. Thats why it cant be revealed now. It will mess up how the story is told. The story of Alita is huge. Nova is a Villian that expands many volumes of books. He is a very intricate and complicated villian. The truth about Zalem and its inhabitants, the Truth about Alita, once revealed are catalysts that drive other portions of the story. What your getting here is an introduction to Alita and her world. FOR THE FANS OF THE COMICS/ANIME: This is one of those things that never happen and if they do, they happen once in a life time. Whether your a fan of Battle Angel Alita or not, if you love Anime, you owe it to yourself to go see and support this. As a fan of the original comics and OVA, you will be disappointed by the lighter tone of the movie when compared to the darker and grittier tone of the book. The feeling of Dread in Iron City is not as pronounced as it is in the books. But understand, if your making a movie that cost 200million dollars, it has to appeal to more than just fans of the book. I can let this slide. And its almost a shot for shot take on the original Animated OVA. So any fans of the OVA will be happy about that. The big eyes, again, its stops bothering you soon after Alita is introduced. Notable differences from the Anime, is Chirens Hair color is black and not Blonde, Chiren and Ido had a Daughter, Ido's mark on his forehead is gone. But its addressed in the movie. Motorball is introduced as an element to drive the narrative and it succeeds very well. You get a few flash backs into her past and a vague introduction to Desty Nova. The cast resembles the comicbook counter parts very well. I was happy with the casting. Both, Hugo and Ido were done right and the same goes for Alita. Again dont worry about the big eyes. If anything it makes Alita her own character and the facial expressions were very well done.

CONCLUSION: I thoroughly enjoyed it. Go see it, whether your invested in the story and characters or not, its worth your money, just for the CGI alone, action and entertainment value.

This movie literally raised the bar for CGI by 1000%. Do not go into this movie expecting source material, this is purely a spectacle of unimaginable amount of hours of pure digital artistry. Alita is the strong female protagonist we've been craving in an action movie for a while now and this is a killer IP to work with. I have already purchased tickets for 2 more showings and plan to see this in IMAX as well. I simply don't understand how anyone didn't like this movie, you must be blind. Alita, you have won over a cult following and it would be mind blowing for investors not to instantly start throwing more money at this franchise. Movies like this are the reason I leave my house to watch one. I wish I could give this movie an 11 because it really was that damn good. Expand

When I first heard Alita was being made into another real action movie from one of my beloved anime/manga series, I was so certain it would be another flop

I am so very happy the makers of Alita Battle Angel proved me wrong.

I was getting goosebumps when I saw how true to the anime this movie was.

The character development of Alita was such a joy to watch, going from innocent and sweet, to tough and badass. The facial animation and the eyes was so beautiful to behold.

Story pacing was pretty spot on and kept me invested from start to finish, and I didnt even talk to my friends during the movie which we usually do.

The fight choreography looks to be performed by people who know martial arts properly

CGI is just masterfully executed that I totally couldnt tell the difference between Alita and the other real actors on screen. Music is really nice and suits the movie really well. Actionscenes is just awesome, specially the Motorball ones :D

The world was so interesting that I want to visit it for myself, and hope to see how Zalem looks like.
If people have not yet gone to see this movie as they had my apprehensions for this adaptation, please go to the cinema and watch it.

Help make Alita get her rightful sequel or trilogy. This movie deserves it :D

Thanks every person who was involved in making this movie. THANK YOU ^^

This is already one of my alltime favorite SCI-FI movies made. It was just pure joy :D

Much the same as I loved the manga of Ghost in the Shell, Blade of the Immortal and others that have received the movie treatment. I was an avowed comic book fan and loved Spawn, the Marvel Universe, Sin City, et all. Here's the thing though - I thought most of the Marvel Movies are just okay, Ghost in the Shell was outright bad, Sin City was at best mediocre, so forth. Outside of Nolan's Batman trilogy, Logan and a couple of the Marvel movies (Thor, namely) I've never thought a comic book movie truly did justice to the source material. I tell you this so you have context for where this review is coming from, I'm a comic book fan and nerd who has not liked almost any of the movies based on comic books.

Obviously you can tell based on my rating that I loved Alita. I thought they really nailed it and it disappoints me to see it dumped in February under the expectation of it being a flop. It further disappoints me to see the critical reception which I think is unjust. Hence why I'm going to the pains of taking the time to actually write a review (something I've only done a handful of times to date). Anyhow, here goes:

The Good (in roughly this order)
1. World Building: This feels like the most well realized fantasy world since Lord of the Rings or Blade Runner. The attention to detail, from inhabitants, to cars, to buildings all just feels really thorough. It makes the rest of what happens work so much better because you're willing to believe in the world they've created. 2. Set Pieces: Holy moly, there are just some jaw dropping set pieces. My friend and I were chuckling, whooping and in general just having a blast. They are some of the best action set pieces put on screen in a long, long time. 3. Acting / Characters: I expected pretty good acting given the pedigree of much of the cast (3 oscar winners?!). But Rosa Salazar crushes it. She humanizes a character, at times feeling petulant, foolish, brash but, nearly always, believably so. The characters don't get as much development as they deserve since there is just so much plotting, but it feels like there is a character who has a lot more about them that we don't know, which is a credit to the actors playing them. 4. Villains: The "big bad" feels appropriately intimidating. I love a good antagonist and he is appropriately mysterious and powerful as to make you feel he is an appropriate counterweight to the heroine and also makes you excited to learn more about him. 5. Effects: I am not a big effects person. In general I feel SFX fights lack weight and thus are forgettable. This is, unequivocally, not the case here. This movie probably as the best effects in general (from environment, to characters, etc) I have ever seen. It feels like another major step forward in that department. The Bad

1. Trying to do too much: They pack A LOT of story in here. There are more subplots than I can count. It's certainly never dull, but it also doesn't give the characters room the breathe. Which is a shame, since the characters are acted well and have interesting motivations/backstory (per the manga) which don't get their due as a result of how much they are trying to pack in. I would have gladly taken a trade off of a bit more character development for a bit less forward propulsion of the overarching story. 2. Plot contrivance: There are a few moments of "wait, how the hell did that person get there?" that really do require suspension of disbelief. They don't do enough to earn it and it feels forced for the sake of moving the breakneck pace of the story forward. They could have made it feel more natural with another 30-60 seconds of context. My strong suspicion is that was there but in an effort to keep the running time down after early testing they cut some of the set-up which left it feeling absolutely manically fast paced.

-Having to wait for the next film!

I came into the cinema unsure of quite what to expect... I was pleasantly blown away by what is easily Rodriguez's best film since sin city. The production cost is there on the screenn with a level of artistic spectacle unseen since the star wars prequels. Much of Iron city is there to draw the eye to and for me this is the first anime to live action film that doesn't completely butcher the source material. It feels about 70% accurate from the manga original with a bit of reshuffling and artistic license here and there. Above all the story just works and the cast are believable in their roles. If your'e a fan of the sci-fi action genre or even just James Cameron epics then this is for you! Glad to have seen this on the big screen but I cannot wait to see this in UHD 4k HDR when it releases in may for, god willing, an extended cut!!

If youFirst off, I really do think the eyes make this movie. They added a certain fantastical element that allows the film to pull off certain dramatic flair (cheese), and being able to do so is pretty dang important to the film overall. If you have/had a normal young girl doing all this cool stuff, your disbelief might naturally kick in. In my opinion. (As a matter of fact, one of the cheesier scenes shown in the trailer was probably a favorite non-action scene, for me)

On that subject, it's action scenes were really cool and had pleasantly over the top showmanship to them. I saw this movie in 3D, which normally isn't my thing, but if you're going to watch a movie in 3D, a James Cameron movie's usually a pretty safe bet.

I thought it's scenario/screenplay was really good. It had lots of things faithful to the manga, and LOTS of changes, but I thought it's screenplay (and everything it changed) worked well as a movie. Yeah, a decent bit of stuff was missing from film that was in the manga, but I'm totally okay with getting a new experience, as well as knowing the differences for myself. I saw a few critics say that it was toned down for ratings purposes, and while that's true, it still had plenty of gore, IMO. It didn't seem to be lowered via gore, but instead by the removal of other "mature themes" that apply to both characters like Ido himself, but also interactions between other characters, like between Alita and Makaku (Grewishka in the film).

Kinda wish they'd thrown in the Farm and Deckman hiring propaganda as an easter egg somehow. And also the physical registration bit at the Farm that made Alita say "but I can't afford to get any dumber" (in the Manga).

If you liked Wonder Woman movie, this is the next one with high-energy, feminine intensity, inetlligence and passion for using force to protect the weak and willing to use force to combat injustice. DON'T LISTEN TO THE PROFESSIONAL CRITICS. Alita was much better than the pro critics led me to believe. Many critics reviewed it like a Fast & Furious movie: multiple action set-pieces jammed together until time's up. ALITA HAS AN EXCEPTIONAL SCRIPT AND NUANCED PERFORMANCES. ALITA IS NOT A "BLOCKBUSTER." Rather it takes the genre of the ScarJo Ghost in the Shell (2017) and aims it towards audience identification with an impassioned female hero, trying to make the world a better place, as in Wonder Woman. This is Jim Cameron and Robert Rodriguez at their best. GO SEE THIS :)

PS: The next Wonder Woman-like movie is likely to be Captain Marvel. The women are taking over because their value system is the antidote for how men have made a mess of things. I believe movies like WW and Alita are part of women waking up to their healthy feminine power and how it can be used in politics and the real world.

The main character is endearing and I simply enjoyed the cast. My wife does not like these kind of movies-s I fi, superhero, etc. However, during the movie she was leaning over and asking questions about characters by name... If this film engaged my anti-Marvel, Star Wars wife then I believe I found a winner. I really hope this film does well and that we get a sequel. Bonus Round: I love that this film had a strong female hero while simultaneously not shoving SJW quasi social philosophy down the audience’s throat. They allowed the character and actress develop independently of social or political 1984 thought control. Expand

If you're still having doubts, I'll help you out. If you like the genre of science fiction, or if you like anime, or if you like action, then, you HAVE to see this in the theatre. Even if you are new to these genres, this is still an objectively excellent film by the highest of standards. Instant classic, 10/10.

My final thoughts go to the filmmakers:

Make. A. Sequel. And if you DO make a sequel, let me just say, it had BETTER be just as DARK, VIOLENT, and MATURE as the first. Hell, you can make it DARKER and MORE VIOLENT, give it an R rating even. I loved the violence.

If you come out with a sequel that is less dark/violent/mature than the first, I'll be the first person to tear it apart. Don't pull a Pacific Rim Transformers Edition on me, and THANK YOU for making this beautiful, sexy, excellent movie.

Of course, if you are more into cheesy love stories or historically accurate biopics, this one is not for you...

The adaptation is really good, with some nice workarounds allowing the story to be coherent and fast paced. Ido (Christopher Waltz) and Vektor (Mahershala Ali) are the perfect cast, the lesser known actors do a very good job along with Jennifer Connelly. The choice of a full CGI Alita is coherent, her expressions are well rendered.

For the manga lovers, you'll find the most iconic scenes of the first books, and a faithful Gally/Alita character. Some shortcuts have been taken to allow the narration to go fast enough, with subtle modifications, that the fans will notice, but that won't change the core of the universe of Gunnm

I would love to see the story continued, so please, please, make it a success :) remember that the best best parts of the lore are yet to come !

To summarize Alita: Battle Angel simply and succinctly: This movie is totally amazeballs!

This may be the best looking film of the decade. It is truly an impressive world. It manages to duplicate the distinct look of the manga. This movie takes place in a futuristic dystopia, but it is kind of a fun lawless Wild West-type instead of the many dystopias today that take themselves too seriously. There's sort of an 80's pop sci-fi aesthetic to the whole thing. There are a lot of cyborgs in this and they're all so unique-looking. Alita's engraved porcelain-ish body is a particularly nice touch.

But what about the story? It is really well-balanced in both action and drama and light and dark. There are moments of wonder and human kindness in this, but also moments of darkness in a dog-eat-dog world.

This is an R-rated manga that was transformed into a PG-13 film. But considering that a lot of violence is between cyborgs, director Robert Rodriguez does a surprising job of making this a violent affair.

Though you never see her real face, Rosa Salazar's wonderful mocap performance makes it through for the computer-animated cyborg Alita. She effortlessly has the character switch from childlike innocence to a determined warrior. The movie made a lot of furor over the internet in its decision to give Alita big ol' anime eyes. The backlash after the first trailer was enought that Rodriguez had them look smaller. (Fun fact: the eyes actually weren't shrunk. The pupils were widened.) To be honest, the eyes never really necessary and they didn't really need to make Alita CG. However, I got used to the look real quick. (The CG is so good that she really feels like a person.) Alita is supposed to be different from everyone else, even other cyborgs, so being the only one with big eyes kinda helps cement this.

Christoph Waltz does a great job in a tenderr but world-wise role as the cyber-doctor who finds Alita and takes her in. He's been typecast in villain roles for far too long. The father-daughter relationship between the two, albeit a bit rushed, is a core of the film.

Rodriguez and fellow screenwriters James Cameron, yes that James Cameron, and Laeta Kalogridis tackle a certain number of chapters from the manga and really try to squish in every bit of content than maybe they needed to. Admittedly, this works pretty well for most of the film. Exposition is surprisingly natural here. However, the ending is a smidge rushed. It is an emotional one, but it could have been stronger and the need to tease a sequel, while producing a striking final scene, doesn't help either. There are two main cyborg villains in this and as much as I liked both of them, this could've been a smoother product if one of them was cut.

Despite my criticisms, I really love this movie. Highly reccomended.

Awesome movie, excellent build up of a believable world. Super glad they didn't screw up this animation adaptation like so many other movies did. RIP Ghost in the Shell.

It has its flaws (which doesn’t?), but for sure it is not 5/10 as critics would like you to believe. I’ve seen it two times already and the pacing is perfect - action and slower scenes are nicely mixed throughout the whole movie, so it doesn’t overwhelm nor bore you. The story is sometimes a little rushed, but it bothered me only the first time I was watching the movie, so most likely it was due to being hyper-hyped by the superb trailers ;-).
The IMAX presentation is perfect and fighting scenes are the best of the best. I really hope this movie turns into a franchise, because - apart from expected sequel - possibilities for games, toys and tie-ins are endless here...

Best movie I have seen in a very long time. It's like they put plenty of care into making it compared to the other garbage movie trash that has released in recent years.

I'm not sure why the critics don't like the movie. Is a strong, awesome, powerful woman, both in physical strength and character, a bad thing these days ? I enjoyed this movie a lot. Expand

I really hope it makes enough money for a sequel.. Cameron mentions he wants this to be a trilogy. Expand

I really enjoyed the movie, was an incredible experience. It was just like the Anime and certain scenes were recreated to the very angle. definately a must watch.
