Incredibly good adaptation of the Manga. Loved every second and Alita’s CGI face was made flawlessly. I wasn’t expecting anything less from Mr.Cameron.

Good story, good characters. The visuals and action scenes are great. Wonderful depth. The CGI was fantastic. I am so sick of the boring one-dimensional Hollywood movies out there. This film was a breath of fresh air.

A parade of remakes bundled together with the banal linearity of the storytelling of the last Cameron is by no means a guarantee of a good result, even less if the basic reference is a Pinocchio's feminine version, plus one of the many teen romance franchises with a young heroine against (almost) everybody in a combat field taken from "Rollerball" (Jewison, 1975) and in a dystopian society divided into two macrocategories ("A Tale of Two Cities", Dickens 1859; "The Time Machine", Wells 1895; ..."Elysium", Blomkamp 2013), plus the ultraviolence of the tarantinian Rodriguez, evocative of Takashi Miike ("Ichi the Killer", 2001) or of the cyborgs of Verhoeven ("RoboCop", 1987).

I know films are mostly subjective, but I do not understand the high user score for this film. It's not the worst film I've seen, but it's the worst in awhile. It's not the worst film I've seen, but it's the worst in awhile. Good: SFX at times was pretty good and some cool action sequences. Bad: Sloppy movie making/storytelling, cliched scenarios and scenes, questionable casting/acting for some, poor uncanny valley/green screen FX in certain parts, and so on. Let me give you a mostly spoiler free example so as to not be confused for a troll or "hater." There's a scene where the good guy takes a very high valued weapon away from the bad guy. Then the good guy drops said weapon in front of the bad guy during some dialogue for no reason. The bad guy picks it up and uses the weapon. I could go into more detail with this scene and many others, but this movie is plagued with them. Add that to someone other complaints and you get a really, comical, but not intended to be comical, sloppy movie that I think won people over with action rather than substance....yes, even with consideration that it's "blockbuster" or "popcorn flick." It bypasses potential weightier themes for more straightforward action. Still, it's exciting action, with exceptional visual effects and a really strong lead in Rosa Salazar as Alita. However, her co-star is unfortunately miscast, and the dialogue is very simplistic. Furthermore, the doll-like CG eyes on Salazar is unnecessary at best, distracting at worst, and misses the point of the anime-like look it's trying to simulate. Expand

There's a much more interesting backstory hinted at, but much like the world building it isn't explored in any satisfying way. Instead we get robot wars fistfights and a cringe love story between a human being and some spare parts in the shape of a pre-pubescent girl. I haven't been this creeped out since I watched the love scenes between a human and an insect in "Bee movie". There's a weird assortment of grotesque cyborgs (reminding me of the movie A.I.) a futuristic sport which reminds me of rollerball, and an evil overlord in the sky city. One huge let down with this movie is there isn't a proper conclusion; some underling bad guys get their comeuppance but the main antagonist is left for a sequel that will never happen. Expand

What we have here, Ladies and Gentlemen, is yet another divisive film. Where - like Top Gun - the critics are extremely mixed while the fans enjoy the over loving h*** out of it.

It’s a bit cliche, the romance between Alita and Hugo, but it really never bothered me. I think Hugo genuinely cared about Alita, and she is too naive of how dangerous the world really is which I found both frustrating at times as well as endearing. Go see it if you haven’t already, I guarantee it doesn’t deserve the heavy bouts of criticisms it’s receiving by critics. Also... there’s a culture war between this film and another marvel film [Captain Marvel] - pay no attention to that. Let this film speak on its own merit, you’ll know If you like it or not when you see it.

I saw it on the second weekend of its release in theaters and I was absolutely blown away. The movie looks and feels just like a live-action anime. I was unsure about this movie when I first saw the trailer but after I did a little research I discovered that it was adapted from an old anime/manga, so that was a huge selling point for me. As a huge fan of anime I am thoroughly impressed. This is literally the best live-action adaptation of any anime property, period. The bar was already set pretty low after recent epic failures such as Ghost In The Shell and Netflix's Death Note, which both utterly annihilated the source material they were adapted from. This made me more than skeptical of Alita: Battle Angel but the movie ended up blowing my expectations out of the water. I can understand now why the critic average is so low on this film which is certainly going to become a cult classic. Anime/manga stories are deep and complicated with many intersecting plot-lines, and a lot of bizarre and abstract ideas. Alita: Battle Angel strikes this chord perfectly with a stunning adaptation that remains faithful to its canon in almost every aspect. I watched the anime episodes after seeing the movie and I was almost shocked at Robert Rodriguez's and James Cameron's attention to detail. They really didn't want to disappoint fans of anime/manga. The problem is this type of film might be too much for the average critic or moviegoer. This is not a Marvel movie. You will have to actually think about what's happening, and there are some profound and even disturbing ideas presented. That's what anime/manga is known for. It's really sad that this under-appreciated gem would become lost in the influx of superhero films that dominate the box office. They took a huge gamble with a hefty budget on this film and it probably will not generate the revenue that studio bigwigs were hoping for. I'm hoping that word of mouth can boost support for this awesome sci-fi extravaganza because this is what both Hollywood and anime has needed. The film ended on a major cliffhanger and I would really like to see the story continued. Expand

Here's the thing about Alita Battle Angel. It doesn't try to do too much. It doesn't try to throw in too many characters. It doesn't try to throw in confusing plot twists that fall apart when you really thing of them. It simply tells a story in a straightforward linear manner. There is character development. A narrative hook and arc. A climax and a conclusion. I learned those story telling elements in MIDDLE SCHOOL. Yet somehow hollywood has forgotten the basics of storytelling and the investors/producers are panicked in to a position of always PUSHING for more more more until we're left with mutated messes of what movies should be. Let that happen long enough, and people become brainwashed, accustomed to the new-normal. Even the critics. And that's how we got here. Is Alita BA the best movie I've ever seen, no. Is all of the above still true? 100%. Expand

The script is based on a Japanese manga/anime story, but eventually, the plot was quite engaging. The actors did a good job, however, we could be expecting a bit more from such a great actor as Christoph Waltz is. Although the picture was stunningly amazing, it would be better the CGI was more "hidden" and blent with physical props. Overall I can truly recommend this film to everyone. It was worth spending 2 hours watching it and I would come back to rewatch it in the future.

My opinion is based on the UHD Blu-ray release I bought.

I do not know what kind of short circuit went through the half-empty heads of the critics to give this movie such a low score. The audience loved it, the setup, masterful exposition and story perfectly balanced in terms of wow factor, loss and appeal.

It tries to shoehorn together several different storylines and cut so many pieces out of each to make them fit into the time alloted that they lose everything of value. Every storyline could have stood on its own and made an excellent movie.

The characters are bereft of nuisance and lacking in the depth that made them original in the source material. They are introduced as cardboard cutouts and with no reason to care about who they are and what they want.

And the worst part is that the movie ends on a dead note; there is no climax, no highlight, no grand finale. And to add to the insult; it ends with "to be continued".

Seemless cgi blends good story with fantastic visuals. it does so without feeling too plastic. I didn't even mind the cliches as tbey keep the plot from becoming too 'heady'. Feels like 'Robot boy' meets 'Maze runner'

It was a very enjoyable experience with gorgeous visuals and great action. The world is is captivating, even if a softer departure from the original material. Character building is well paced, apart from the romance which needed a little more work. Maybe a bit too much crammed into the movie, but, overall it did not take away from the experience, just left you wanting for more. Also enjoyed the acting and the music. I really hope the make another.

I am glad this movie exists, let me get this out there. Films like these give me hope that manga and anime related content will get exposure and a good budget.

TL;dR I watched this movie after putting it off for a while also intentionally avoiding a theater watch considering a lot of the negative reviews I heard, but I now feel it was a missed opportunity for me. This is not the most awesome, perfectest movie out there at all. But the good just nudges out enough of the bad offering a positive experience in my watch.

The Good
Rosa Salazar was a positive for me, the twinkle in her eye from the start of the movie to her hardened Battle Angel namesake was believable and gradual. Christoph Waltz added beautifully to the dynamic between himself and Rosa with Ido-Alita dialogue being the best out of all the character interactions. Also watching him swing that giant rocket powered hammer around was awkward but kinda in a good way showing his ageing character yet solidifying his bad ass courage to go up against dangerous cyborgs.
The Visuals were the biggest star of Film. Every Shot of the world building and the Cyborg/Cyberpunk VFX were detailed, seamless and astonishingly photo realistic; combined with some satisfying action sequences is a big reason for being worth a watch.

Now The Bad aspects to this film...
Hugo was my biggest peeve in the film. Even though his character was written as major Main Protagonist motivation which was good, the actor Johnson was a wet towel and nothing more than a pretty boy. Even his own inner conflict seems to come rather abruptly, his two friends were far more interesting and I would have loved for them as a trio to have a similar arc as 2 friends and 1 love interest. The prejudiced friend and a female friend to Alita were two missed opportunities with Hugo's buddies-in-crime as this would have made compelling story telling.
The actor was bad enough without being saddled with some of the most groan worthy dialogue between love interest and Main Character which dragged a lot. There were some good flashes of well written dialogue in the Hugo-Alita interaction but they were few and far between.
Vector was pretty much a whatever aspect of the film as Ali is an amazing actor but he was given nothing to do other than to spout and or cause plot furtherance, similarly Connelly was another wasted talent.

All in all as I mentioned there were bad aspects to the film, awful really; but the core of Ido and Alita, absolutely excellent VFX, good action and Rosa Salazar were all strong enough to warrant at least one watch and another sequel to get the wheels rolling for good movies inspired by anime/manga literature.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alita is an excellent movie. I saw the movie in ICE and this film does not allow me to perceive the ICE technology as a technology that brings value. The Dolby Atmos is occasionally used especially to demonstrate the grandeur of the city or "MotorBowl". Finally a can like "ICE" it is under-exploited. 3D is flat, especially the first scene. A terrifying 3D of nonsense except at 2 moments of the movie .. The technology pushes limits especially at eye level, hairiness and without a doubt in terms of hair and movements. The work of modeling robots is very detailed and especially sublimated by a work of light that is just breathtaking. The moods, the atmosphere of interior and exterior are very developed which makes everything beautiful. I took a slap! The story places us in the hands of a doctor "Ido" who crosses waste dumps rejected by the city from the top. Ido rebuilds the robot that makes it a good little girl. His robotic body is adorned with pretty designs, all caressed by this light. Then Alita becomes a strong woman during her change of armor. Alita emancipates from men and wishes to recover the memory and thus want to go up to the city from the top. So she participates in the MotorBowl which is played only by men. They evolve like a heroine .. From the rebirth to the conquest and can be good for the social rebalance .. The action is very well dosed and especially very well choreographed. The impossible angles of camera are present (thanks to Tech Cameron). But I still lack a lot of elements to judge the story. So far I can say that this story is interesting and I look forward to know more. The most impressive is that Alita becomes as charismatic as a real actor when she is only a 3D representation. For those who are big film fans, this one is a great time to spend with friends! #LoveChristopheWaltz

#LoveChristopheWaltz

I'm guessing Alitas body was designed with all the necessary parts. To be honest, I wouldn't say no to her either, especially if I needed protection from saber weilding cyborgs. It's funny how how he just can't wait to get some of that artifical booty. She has a slight CGI look too that clearly drives him wild. Ever want to see Christopher waltz wielding a huge war hammer? I didn't think I did, until I saw it. It's just a very entertaining and watchable film, with some of the best action sequences I've ever seen. The story is pretty decent, the acting fine. The dialogue is a bit silly in parts but still entertaining. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alita: Battle Angel is the story of a utopian society where guns have been outlawed and regular people are paid to enforce the law by their corporate overlords at night, because the mechanized military force can’t be bothered and everyone else is too busy Ubering women home from the club to their doom.

The plot is fairly muddled: Alita doesn’t know if she wants to be a manic pixie dream girlfriend or a naïve cyborg daughter or a rebellious teenager or the leader of a sci-fi rebellion or a professional roller skater (sic). Which is fine, but it means that there are points when it seems like the movie is being drawn and quartered by romantic and action plots, like the moment when she’s lined up for the Big Game and she simultaneously gets phone calls from both the Doctor telling her to abandon her post and her boyfriend who needs her help in a completely different place. It’s easy to imagine that what the film intended was to show that Alita contains multitudes and wears different masks for different people, a bit of powering wish fulfillment here and an emotionally accessible boyfriend there, but in some sense Alita comes off as a little shallow and restless.

Christoph Waltz’s backstory is pretty shady, which is also fine–there’s something to be said for leaving the audience wanting more, creating drama through mystery. It’s unclear what his daughter’s deal was that required him to build her “fast legs,” or if he was just unwilling to live in a world where his daughter would have to–god forbid–wheel herself around like any other person with a mobility issue. Which brings up a point about disability in the year 2400: it certain seems like a lot of people who would otherwise just be heads and spinal columns are turning into enhanced bounty hunters for little or no money. The doctor’s moral objection to rocket ball racing don’t seem to be that hard and fast when Alita decides it’s the only way she’s going to be able to jog her amnesiac memory–even though it seems like the “demon” of his former involvement spawned his disgust.

If I were the nurse from this film, Dr. Ido’s assistant, I would be a little miffed. She had some lines and she clearly is helping keep the business afloat, but Alita kind of creepily avoids her in any scene where they’re together. She calls the doctor “dad” in front of her, snuggles up with him on the coach, under the nurse’s grossed out frown, without so much as a “hello” or a “thank you for playing a role in reviving me twice.”

With an eye squarely on the ending of the film: it seems like Alita isn’t actually able to accomplish very much aside from her journey of self-discovery. At no point does it seem like she’s in danger of facing a competent foe. The lackeys of the villain are constantly depending on sub-optimal grunts to do their dirty work, which makes it a little surprising when they are able to score even a little scratch on the most advanced piece of (Martian?) weaponry in centuries. The villain relies on a form of hypnosis (which I find narratively boring) in order to project himself on the lower world. I know that this is an adaptation of a manga and that that magna exists as part of a certain aesthetic of sci-fi dystopias, but where I’ve seen it done best is in Rick Remender and Sean Murphy’s Tokyo Ghost, which for a number of reasons finds ways to transcend the clichés of the genre.

Tokyo Ghost, if I can get off track for a moment, still has the consumerist battle royale race car scenes, the man-to-man brawls, the journey of self-discovery, the empowered woman hero, and the anti-war critique, but it does not give itself over completely to those flashier elements of storytelling. It grounds itself in issues of environmental destruction and corporate oligarchy. So, I bring it up primarily to point to it as a path not taken in the conception of the original source material.

For a different perspective, Friend has always been a big proponent of “original sci-fi” movies and liked everything about this movie except all the scenes with the boy, who was terrible–this was constant critique whenever he saw the trailers. Wife seconded that by saying that at no point does he seem like a nice guy. He spends a lot of time creeping on a two-day old cyborg teenager, despite being old enough to drink alcohol with the owner of the race track. He cuts their dates short to do horrible things to innocent people on the streets. And he just generally spends a lot of time committing sins of omission, besides being a poor jumper.

Film in general seems like it was a bit of a mess, but no so outrageously stupid that you should avoid it. For more on uncanny valleys and the disappointing CGI check out the Imaginary Worlds podcast, unfortunately behind a Spotify paywall. Also look at Josh Spiegel’s take on “the pitfalls of sequel-building,” and take heed of calls punish high profile producers of the film.

Panned by so many for what it is not, while missed by the same for what it is. Simply, this is a film that comes along very infrequently: merging meaning and medium perfectly, while advancing a craft that is too often mimicked but seldom defined. The first mercurial statement: meaning and medium--this is a futurist film that welds relatable characters with an advance of the very element which best, visually, defines that future. This film accomplishes that feat in the same way that Terminator 1 and 2 did. Recall, if you can, your youthful memory of those films and remember the feelings you had. I had the same ones in this film. The second statement: CG art is a difficult medium to excel at--this is best known by those that have tried. I have made strides to progress in this arena for the twin enjoyment of both art and technology. Those that participated in this exemplar of the art have achieved something few ever will: a defining example, a unique and enduring entry into the craft of this sort. My respect to all who made this a reality. You all deserve so much more credit than you get. And to top it all off, this work is well directed, well acted, well lit, well timed, well scored. Fools do not always know when they are in the presence of something they cannot understand. Stand aside. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The action scenes and CGI were fantastic but the story and plot was very lackluster. It started off really interesting but devolved into a teenage love story/transformers movie. The ending was extremely unfulfilling and left so much unexplained and untouched. So many scenes in the film just didn't make sense. They wasted time on making sure Hugo didn't die only to kill him off again in the next scene he was in. And the brutality scenes were so cringe worthy and tacked on it crippled the movie.

You're not allowed to feel anything for the characters in this movie cause it doesn't give you time to and it smashes you over the head with nonsensical **** Literally two seconds after the dog is killed in the bar, Alita smearing it's blood on her face. That's another level of **** up and completely subverts Alita's character. Then this doctor saves Hugo and goes to tell her boss off and somehow before the next scene, they have time to disembowel her and put as a wall trophy. The pacing is so awful it ruins the viewer's suspension of disbelief. We spend all this time building up to a confrontation with Nova and we get zero payoff. She loses her boyfriend for the 2nd time and what does Alita decide to do? She goes and plays Motorball for months. We get a cheesy closing scene where she points her sword at the city overhead and that's it. And this is supposed to be an above average movie? No **** way, not in my book.

The movie started off great. Then as it proceeds it just fails to expand on any previous plot points it set up previously. It leads the viewer down a path and suddenly goes off the rails trying to do something completely different. If James Cameron wanted the plot of the movie to be a love story/motorball tournament then center it around that and don't screw around with half finished bits of another story. Obviously this movie was set up to have sequels and that is likely what attributes to it's failure as a film. A movie should be able to stand on it's own weight regardless if there will be a sequel or not. This movie fails to do that. It has great action scenes, likeable main characters and beautiful CGI but it fails to have a compelling plot and take it's own story seriously which drags it's score down severely. I'd still give it a average score just because the action scenes were so good and in between the head scratching scenes where the story was happening it was genuinely fun to watch.

Score: 5/10

This movie needs more than one views and it matures like wine with each one. It's first manga adaptation made by hollywood that really works. It has soul. Besides I love cyberpunk and there is always need for more good CP movies.

PS: after

PS: after watching this every Marvel movie is tasteless, teethless, absurd. When someone in Alita universe is hitted by sword he is splitted in half -> this world fells real. When normal soldier is hitted by 1000 tons hammer wielded by a god of thunder, he just bounce to wall like rubber ball .... eeeeehh -______-

The movie presented its world in such a great way that I would like to see so many stories being told here. Give us a TV-series! Not since Blade Runner have I been so impressed with a made up world. So many others have failed.

Excellent film, very Japanese , first two acts are 10/10 third act falls a bit flat for me and some of the editing for classification may have reduced the. Impact a but. Still thoroughly good film what on Earth are the professional 'critics' smoking.
