A completely unnecessary film (aside for fattening Mr. Scott's bank account).

It has a good production value, don't get me wrong, but this film doesn't bring anything on the table. What's worse, several turning points of the movie are typical "DON'T DO THAT, YOU FOOL!!" moments, which are very disappointing.

I give 3 just because even if one wants to spend 2 hours of his time watching a horror/sci-fi, especially this years, there are plenty; facehuggers were cool 40 years ago, today, they're just boring.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm sorry but I was so disappointed... Prometheus was so much better in every way. I loved prometheus. however, definitely not my impression for Alien conevnant. I found the plot way to predictable and to simple. the 3 aliens were killed so rapidly... I don't know, maybe my expectations were set to high after prometheus. No really, If it wasn't for the marvelous rendering shots of space, the spaceship, landscapes, (etc.), I would've left the theater before the movie ends. Expand

There's something wrong with a movie that exists as an excuse to show people being violently ripped apart in various ways by something that God apparently created (since He created everything seen and unseen).

The sixth Alien movie doesn't disappoint. Alien: Covenant is loaded with the tense action sequences and visceral gross-out moments that we have learned to love from this franchise. The thoughtful, world-building storyline delivers new and interesting heights for the series. Alien: Covenant should have no trouble appealing to new audiences while also pleasing long-time fans. Its one fault is in taking a few minutes too long to get things going in the beginning. At the risk of sounding jaded: in 2017, we have seen the fancy spaceship effects and hyper-sleep stuff before. Skip it and the movie would have benefit, much like this years "Life" did. Overall, Alien: Covenant shouldn't be missed. Expand

I found the film was a good blend of Prometheus and Alien, however Alien: Covenant shares many flaws with Prometheus being the some of the plot points make no sense and the technology is no were close to the retro feel of the original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would have gave it **** if I didn't see the twist coming a mile away. Otherwise Alien: Covenant is the best since Alien and Aliens. I just felt like Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) got the Hicks and Newt Alien 3 treatment. David (Michael Fassbender) proves here that he's the key character of these movies. We don't root for people to survive though just for them to die off screen. Who says Scott won't do that again with the 3rd film.
I enjoyed most the movie but a lot of people die because they were stupid. When some creepy Android says "follow me, I want to show you something." You don't goespecially if that creepy Android is David. So I felt like their were some horror cliches. Especially with "the everything is fine...oh wait no it's not!" typical horror movie ending. I am not exactly defending why Alien: Covenant is one of the best though. The film is engaging and interesting during it's slow moments. I enjoyed learning more of why David does what he does.
I like that he actually says "curiosity killed the cat!" Since that's what I was thinking about him. His curiosity is very dangerous. The film does skip the whole "who created us ?" plot of Prometheus. However, David is the creator these films is interested in. It's about creation. Not ours though. The xenomorphs....
I find that intriguing and is why my Thumb is up.

I'm of two minds on this one, much like Ridley Scott seems to have been. He wanted to continue the origin story he started with Prometheus, continue to explore what the search for answers entails and the mysteries it has over us. But he also knew that this time around, he had to deliver the Alien goodness or audiences would get all pissy again and wouldn't understand the point of it all and blah blah blah (it wasn't called Alien: Prometheus for a reason).

So here we have a typical Alien type movie setup with a big spaceship and slumberers awakening from their cryo comas too early and then exploring some desolate planet where of course the **** hits all kinds of fan. Things gestate, parts burst, there's blood and violence. But the thing is, Scott's heart doesn't seem to be in these scenes. They almost feel as if they've been directed by someone else (perhaps Luke Scott, his son, the 2nd unit director)? They're almost mindless in their CGI flash-cut matter of factness (is there anything worse than CGI Xenomorph?). Nothing surprising or engaging or even remotely resembling the kind of terror on display in the original Alien - just flashiness and shininess and fastness.

But then there's this other movie all mixed up in it that's a more direct sequel in line with what Scott was doing in Prometheus. It involves David holed up on this world creating life, studying life, becoming a God. There's strange architecture from the Engineers (indelible), philosophizing and eroticism and genuine intrigue and mystery. It's about the creation of horror by a rejected and alienated creation trying to discover its place in the universe (turtles all the way down) and it's far more interesting than the generic space creature movie that keeps popping up.

It was a valiant attempt to blend the two but it doesn't work because you get the feeling this wasn't meant to be an Alien movie in the first place (we already have that/those) and Scott didn't really want to do that. But Scott is nothing if not smart about his business decisions - Fox funded it and audiences were interested again at first, more so than they would have been if it were Prometheus 2 - and he got to at least make part of a movie he was interested in. Let's hope for a third, one that audiences can engage with on its own terms.

While Prometheus was all about exploring creation, man's complex relationship with it, and the possibility of a creator, this sequel to it uses Ridley Scott's fantastic Xenomorph creation to take the series more back to it's horror rootsWhile Prometheus was all about exploring creation, man's complex relationship with it, and the possibility of a creator, this sequel to it uses Ridley Scott's fantastic Xenomorph creation to take the series more back to it's horror roots while still asking some philosophical questions along the way. The themes this time are still centered around creation, but the focus is more on human error. The fallacy of our ways. The dangers of our constant quest for progress can bring. Even some creator vs the created tension as well. The best part of all though is that serves as a return to form for the Alien series, bringing the menacing Xenomorph back into our lives.

Scott wastes little time in letting the blood flow. There are plenty of brutal kills and the usage of gore is so excessive that it reaches B-rated, schlocky levels of fun. Scott once again gives us the total experience of a slasher film set in space. His scenes of grander destruction are gorgeous. Ridley Scott proves once again to be one of the masters of the science-fiction genre. His immaculately crafted plot and beautifully created scenery are incredible. The latter proving to be the right amounts of alien and historic in appearance.

The movie also served to increase my appreciation for Michael Fassbender. His dual performance here is nothing short of incredible as he is portraying almost two completely different individuals. Both of whom are most well-written in the movie. For a movie already strong in plot, action, and character it is amazing just how much Fassbender does to bolster all of it's strengths and abilities. He takes things to another level and the movie goes to show his outstanding ability as an actor. He's not the only notable person onscreen though. While everyone else is pretty much playing the standard character roles one would expect in this kind of movie, there is Danny McBride really stepping out of his comedic comfort zone in favor of a surprisingly emotional performance. After Fassbender he is the next best person onscreen.

Covenant proves to be a welcome return to form Ridley Scott and the Alien series he created. It builds on the groundwork laid by Prometheus, leading to much better results and continues the story of it masterfully. This is the Alien prequel we've been waiting for. If the writing has one flaw it's that the big twist at the end is totally predictable. I would also say that the big finale relies a bit too much on action over horror, but overall those complaints are minor in comparison to everything else going on. Bloody good fun and surprisingly deep to boot, Alien: Covenant is not to be missed, longtime Alien fans or newcomers alike.

Sure, it might not be Alien or Aliens, but it sure as hell is much better than Alien 3, Prometheus or Part 4.
I loved how Scott made everything look modern, yet still retained the same style as in Alien or Aliens. Like the computers, the design of the ships, the sounds of the computers, even the mentality of the people were straight from the 70s or 80s.

I really am excited for the next movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was, overall, watchable and entertaining. You can't ask much more from a movie. That being said there was very little about it that made me feel like it has much to do with the already established Alien franchise and that has turned a lot of people off of this movie. In terms of a space horror, it's enough to give you creepy feelings and a little anxiety and is all in all generic. The Good: It has Daniel McBride in a serious role done well and he brought a lot of character to an otherwise drab crew. The effects were well done and believable. SciFi action horror that will keep you on your toes. There's not a lot of down time in this film, it immediately starts with conflict and keeps the pace very well. Michael Fassbender does a great job in 2 roles and making them feel like 2 different characters. The Bad: Who else is sick of seeing people who are supposedly experts in their field constantly falling under the slightest pressure? These are assumed to be highly trained individuals piloting a generational ship to another planet to terraform and inhabit. Instead you feel like its a bunch of arbitrary people they grabbed from specific fields of study and threw them all together without any idea of protocol or how to function under pressure. One of my biggest pet peeves in horror movies is making the characters so dumb, its little wonder their in there current predicament. There were zero safety protocols even hinted at in this movie that it takes you out of the moment and say "Hey, shouldn't they be doing x to possibly prevent y so they don't have to deal with z?". Who has ever heard of landing on an alien planet without a suit of some sort to filter out any possible contaminants in the air? Or how medical quarantine suddenly turns a hardened space explorer to tears in seconds? There was a scene when a juvenile alien creature is attacking a woman with a knife. She has a knife in her hands and doesn't once try to stab the thing, literally letting it eat her face. Then immediately after, another supposedly highly trained pilot suddenly starts shooting willy nilly around her lander ship with little regard to puncturing the hull and the explosive canisters that are strapped to the wall. It seemed like the whole situation with the lander was a "Well, we have to get them stuck on the planet somehow..." move by the writers and is quite moronic and childish to believe. Then a few minutes later, they are stranded in an alien outpost with a robot they barely just met who has been there for about a century. This is clearly a 'don't go anywhere alone' situation but what do the characters start to do? You guessed it, they wonder off alone and start getting picked off one by one. Not to mention this is the year 2104, are you telling me I can talk to my friend in Tokyo with the biggest storm raging outside my window yet they can't talk to people directly below them on the planet? We've already communicated with people on the moon and these people are clearly closer to the moon. Are you telling me they have an, I assume, multi-billion dollar ship holding close to 2500 people and 1000-some odd fertilized embryos but they decided to skimp out on the communication equipment? Whats so ironic to me is that Daniel McBride is clearly the most intelligent and capable person on this ship when he usually portrays moronic scum bags. Now we have to get to the whole what robots can or cant do and why its important for you. First of all we see that Walter can heal, to an extent, and he's fairly quick about it. He cant regrow limbs but he can recover from a stab wound in little less than 10 minutes. The earlier David model is lacking this upgrade. So how are people not putting 2 and 2 together when the Walter that gets back to the ship is not healing minor lacerations to his face? Then, why doesn't Walter (who has been replaced by a David with a wound on his chin) have a hole in his chin? Since he is David in disguise, he shouldn't have been able to heal it. Ah well, you know what they say about robots in the future, they do what they want, when they want.

All in all, there were too many plot holes that had you scratching your head to really get yourself into this movie. There were too many fragile threads that led to such a catastrophe that had anyone done the smallest amount thinking would have unwound the whole thing. I'm also not going to mention how this, in no way, felt like an Alien movie. I feel that simply watching it will tell you that it is having a tough time reliving the glory days of 1987.

NOw, that first Alien movie is one of my all-time favorites. However, Alien Covenant is just a cheap knock-off of the same story-line. It had this amazing rising tension the whole way and every time the alien made an appearance, it was shocking and nerve-wrecking. What steals the show though, is the new territory the movie explores besides the aliens themselves. It creates a philosophical aspect that stays with you even after the movie is over. Prometheus was a confusing mess, and this movie is trying to get back on track, it just needs less robo-bros. It was creepy...
But like in the comics, it should get cool. Alien hybrids and breeding are being introduced.
I suggest looking at the comics. It's only once the hybrids are introduced (on a major scale) that things get really interesting.

Covenant is weaker in the portrayal of the heroine compare to Prometheus, but thanks to Michael Fassbender (once again) great acting able to strengthen her as a character. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoilers: Just an Amazing film, i don't normally like horror films but love the Alien Franchise. it was full of twists and turns, and some of the best scenes just send shivers down my spine... Literally. there is a load of lore in this film and some of it needs you to piece it together as it goes along. one of the parts where one of the most significant forms of the Xenomorph, The Facehugger hugs one of the crews face while another tries to free it off him and succeeds but at the cost of some acid burnt skin and his own life as one of the main Xenomorphs prey's from above, the guy with the acid burnt skin runs of and survives... this scene just had me in a paranoid state through the rest of film thinking did the Facehugger lay the egg, or was it unsuccessful... it was the first as it took longer burst out later in the film. David (the original from Prometheus) returns as he was stranded on the home world of the "Engineers" which Shaw and David pursue at the end of Prometheus which Shaw "Died" on impact with the world. now one part (SPOILER if You didn't read before... idiots), Walter (new David) is fighting the old David because David was obsessed with creation and experimentation with the Xenomorphs studying them with the numerous subspecies. David was the reason Shaw died, and when everything was going Walter's way during the fight with him being better, it cuts black... now this is when everything goes out of hand, David stabs and kills Walter successfully unlike before, takes Walter clothes and portrays him making Shaw and the rest think its Walter when its not. That's how the ending happens, Daniels finds out when she starts to go into cryosleep, which now that David is running the ship Covenant, he puts 2 facehugger embryo's into the freezer and that's when it ends. now that makes me excited for the 3rd film. Prometheus was great and so was this film. sorry for pointing out the obvious but its for the people who don't know what happened at those parts for the delusional. worth the see and the gore makes it better on the way the necromorphs evolve and how the original Big Chap is formed. Very intriguing movie, but many holes in story. This film was supposed to give answers about the Alien universe, but gives more questions. Great work anyway.

Although disturbing, brutal, and intense at times (as this is supposedly "Scott's bloodiest film yet" [from IMDb]), Covenant still serves as a reminder that Scott, although with some disappointing factors, has not gone out of business from the horror industry just yet. Im so tired of bad storytelling in the film industry, the critics who all voted this film positive must be getting paid off, Every Hollywood film tends to get positive scores across the board, however terrible the film is. Those so-called critics should be ashamed of themselves! Always go by used reviews. They are normally on the pulse.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who grew up with a pretty dark childhood, horror movies hold a special place in my heart. At an early age, they put a face to the horrors I experienced. The original Alien movies were, and still are a personal favorite of mine. And before you ask, yes, even Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection are included. While I was not a huge fan of Prometheus (I sat there for its entire run-time waiting for the millisecond the alien was present post credits), I was ecstatic to hear that its sequel (and prequel to the original Alien movies) was going to put the Xenomorph, or a version of it, at the forefront.

The film opens with David having a conversation with his “father”, Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) about his birth and place in the world. David (Michael Fassbender) appears to be suffering from the same daddy issues that were prevalent in Prometheus. After some pouting about how he will never be able to create offspring due to being a synthetic, we are introduced to the Covenant and its crew.

The Covenant is transporting a few thousand colonists to a new home world for a fresh start. After a rouge meteor strikes the ship and kills some colonists and the ships captain, Branson (James Franco), the 2nd in command Oram (Billy Crudup) takes over. As soon as he does, a strange distress signal consisting of garbled music by the great John Denver from a nearby planet is picked up by the ship. The writers chose to touch on the captain’s religious faith, which is never really explored, but I believe this hints to a faith that believe that God came from space and eventually came to worship the Aliens in Dark Horse Comic’s Aliens vs. Predator comic series. Contrary to the some of the teams’ advice, Oram chooses to visit the planet to evaluate it for possible human inhabitants or colonization.

Once on the planet, members of the team start becoming ill from small spores and stuff hits the fan. I found it funny that just minutes after being on an uncharted planet with no living creatures to be seen, they take their helmets off and breathe the unknown atmosphere. After an initial confrontation with the Xenomorphs, they are saved by David, whom has crash landed on this planet after the events of Prometheus.

The remainder of the film showcases the struggles of the team on the planet and the lack of communication between the remaining members of the crew hovering in space above the planet. While it’s an enjoyable film, once the alien is added to the story, it suffers from some pretty major pacing issues. The true horror of the situation doesn’t begin until the last 30-40 minutes of the film, but when it finally hits, it doesn’t let up.

Technically, director Ridley Scott offers some amazing special effects, both practical and CGI. My major complaint with the film is, much like Prometheus before it, the technology featured in the film is far more advanced than that in the original Alien films that take place after this. While not overly distracting from this film, it does make you go ask why. Additionally, the insight into the creation or evolution of the Xenomorph is never fully explored. What’s left is more questions, and even less answers as to how they evolved from what we saw in Prometheus to the Alien shown in the older films that followed this. In my humble opinion, this film would have served better as part of a new trilogy in the Alien franchise, which would have explained the technological advancements as well as left room for the evolution of the creatures. The fact that the aliens at the beginning of the film emerge from the host fully developed without the use of eggs, looking more like a cat than a snake, seems that the creatures de-evolved into the Xenomorph we all know and love.

The cast put forth believable performances, with Michael Fassbender (pulling double duty as 2 synthetics) and Danny McBride being standouts. I was concerned with the casting of McBride due to his previous roles primarily being comedic, but he was a pleasant surprise. The real stars of the movie, the Xenomorphs, look as terrifying as ever and if anything, deserved more screen time than they received.

While not a perfect film, Alien Covenant is a welcome addition to the Alien franchise. Despite its shortcomings, it is an entertaining experience. With its surprise twist ending, I can only hope that Ridley Scott’s inevitable follow up offers more answers and resolves some of the prequel’s many plot holes.

After the mostly negative response to 2012’s Prometheus, Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created with Alien: Covenant.

Clearly the director has taken on-board a lot of fan feedback when it comes to the direction of the franchise as Covenant abandons some of the more pretentious parts of its predecessor in favour of returning the franchise to its horror/sci-fi roots.

Wisely though, Scott doesn’t jettison all of the groundwork laid by Prometheus and Covenant very much acts as a sequel to that film as much as it remains a prequel to the main Alien series.

Michael Fassbender was by far in a way the best part of the last film and the filmmaker gives him plenty of screen-time this time around as Walter, a new model of ‘synthetic’ android accompanying the crew of the Covenant as they set out on a colonisation mission.

As with all great space films, the mission does not go as planned and the crew quickly find themselves going off book with life or death decisions and calculated risks to be made in order to survive.

Covenant’s central device is a fairly simple one — this time around the crew under threat is composed entirely of couples. While the script is somewhat ham-fisted in it’s constant reminders of this fact, (‘That’s my wife’ ‘is my wife ok?’ etc etc) the cast nonetheless do a great job of conveying the added horror of seeing ones spouse in some pretty horrific situations. While previous missions in the Alien universe have consisted of teams of marines or groups of colleagues, the Covenants’ mission is that much more personal. These are people on their was to start a new life and supposedly families when they are diverted by the obligatory ‘distress call’ and the whole thing goes ****

That core idea brings a fair amount of melodrama to proceedings as scientists, pilots and terraforming experts abandon their scientific reasoning and sometimes common sense, in order to protect their loved ones. This doesn’t mean there aren't any eye-rolling moments where characters make outright dumb decisions, but at least there is a believable reason for it this time around.

While a fair amount of the cast are disposable cannon fodder, the main team provides a solid ensemble of character archetypes. Katherine Waterston’s Daniels is essentially a proto-ripley although her transformation into action-hero towards the end of the film does feel a little unearned and rushed. Billy Crudup and Danny McBride continue the grand ‘Alien’ tradition of a crew made of character actors and each get a number of moments to shine.

This film is all about Fassbender though, to get into any detail as to how and why he steals the spotlight would spoil the entire second half. The marketing team have done a great job of letting us know the right amount of information from trailers, clips etc, while keeping most central revelations for the cinema and that’s the way it should stay.

As the slow-burn first act gives way to the horror of the Alien threat itself, Scott delivers some truly visceral and violent deaths. The mark of any good horror or action film should be a audible reaction from the audience and in my screening Covenant certainly delivered on that front.

By the time the film reaches its climax it feels like the Alien franchise has come full circle. Both Prometheus and now Covenant end with a clear set up for a sequel and while the latter was groan-inducing and frustrating, this time you are left anticipating the next chapter with enthusiasm for a franchise that seems to have found its feet once again.

Covenant acts as a soft-reboot of sorts for Alien, picking and choosing the best parts of previous chapters to create a new hybrid. Six films in, the franchise has been re-invigorated by going back to it’s roots, while a sequel promises to be something completely different. Ridley Scott has essentially created the ‘Force Awakens’ of Alien movies, and depending on your own opinion, this is by no means a bad thing.

Not really much suspense in this prequel since you pretty know how it's going to turn out from the sequels. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "They created us. Then they tried to kill us. They changed their minds. I deserve to know why?" Those were the words of Elizabeth Shaw in the last few moments of Prometheus. To me that was the interesting question Prometheus raised. It raised Prometheus from being another slash horror gore fest with some space ships in it, to a decent science fiction movie. To pose the question "what if?" Stronger even, it dared to take on one of the major themes in Art. Waiting for five years to get an answer is a bit long. But then the question was interesting enough to keep me wondering for five years what answer they would come up with.
In truth I did start to worry a little when they changed the name from "Paradise Lost" to "Alien,Covenant." That implied another movie about aliens, and lets be honest after "Aliens" they were never really scary anymore. The Alien connection was an nice side plot in Prometheus but the real threat were the Engineers. Also, the thought that humans may just have came about as an imperfect side result of some Alien experiment. That we are a species of bastard orphans meant to be wiped out. Not only are we not created by a loving protecting God in his own image. We were not meant to exist at all. We are unloved, unprotected, alone and on our own in a cold universe. That's more disturbing than any horror movie that came before. (And I suspect that's the real reason for the venomous reviews it received.)
However,it was worse than feared.Alien covenant doesn't even give the hint of an answer. And for that reason alone I would have never have rated it higher than a 4.
On top of that it committed one of the mortal sins that Alien 3 was guilty of too. Killing the survivors of the last movie. And even worse you are only told about it. You only do that, when you want to lure the fans of the last movie to come and see your new one, while actually you want to make a totally different movie. It's a rip off. - 1 point for that.
What is left is a remake of James Cameron's Aliens done by Ridley Scott.
The CGI is sub standard(you can see the pixels.) Not only is the new Ripley boring, the whole set of characters is uninteresting. Bland personalities the lot of them. Models not actors. I really didn't care who died and who didn't and in that respect it was like Alien 3.
So a well deserved 2. Please please never make an Alien movie again. Anybody... Do something original...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A missed opportunity to do something more with the franchise, than a scary film in space. It features a group of humans so stupid, they do anything but fling themselves off cliffs on purpose. None of the character motives or behavior were particularly convincing, to the point that after watching the film, I got to the conclusion the crew of Covenant had it coming to them; although if the ship were to blow up after the credits, taking out David and the entire franchise to oblivion with it, this film would've been a 10/10. It's not as well packaged and inspiring as its predecessor Prometheus, but Alien: Covenant has all the same hallmarks of this new universe Ridley Scott has created. The soundtrack is very evocative, worth listening to on its own. Spores is a stand out and will make your hairs stand on end. The plot and flow of the movie is a bit clumsy and I think this has a lot to do with a poorly conceived script, however the overarching story holds up. The cast could have done with one or two different actors but overall serves the movie well. Michael Fassbender does a good job of being David. I wish only that we got that element of horror and dread a bit more. With the right script I'm sure Ridley Scott can do anything. Comparing this to the original Alien, and having gone back and watched all the original films, I think the two new movies have already gone far above and beyond what we originally saw in those films from a story-telling and world-building standpoint and it would be foolish to think the new films are somehow inferior. Prometheus and Alien: Covenant represent a much more evocative future for the universe Alien is set. As I said all they need is a good script. Prometheus set the bar, Alien Covenant reaches it at times, let's have a third instalment that totally blows our sucks off. Expand

Like Prometheus it is again not a true Alien movie, has a great story underneath with lots of philosophical, psychological and moral themes and the characters are also again nominees for the Darwin Award or whatever the fictional equivalent is. I must admit that I like much of the story and themes. Would it be not linked to the Alien franchise and promises made to be more of an Alien movie it would be more accepted. Also they tried more to make it look like an Alien movie than the prequel. Here I admit that they failed and I looks more like “See, we gave you more of the stuff you wanted. Aren't we great?”. This is an example for the middle-ground being the worst alternative. A true Alien movie like Alien 1 or 2 or even a better version of Alien 4 could work. Alternatively being a true prequel like telling the story of the Engineers directly and not some unsatisfying aspects as side story would also work. There is a small realm of giving answers and still have the mystery and imagination intact. But lets go back to the movie. At the end of Prometheus David and Noomi (Elisabeth Shaw) set up to travel to the home-world of the Engineers to get answers to their questions. However Covenant already changed this Alien 3 style and it is the first disappointment. The potential is lost immediately as much as the hype or good faith the fans had. Years later the colony-ship “Covenant” is hit by a neutrino burst and damaged. After the crew is reanimated from stasis by Android Walter they find a transmission from a nearby planet thought to be unexplored and has better living condition than their original destination. They set out to explore it. So started the story and it has great philosophical, moral and psychological themes. However it is not what we expected and there are dumb decisions and the actors cant correct the flaws in the script. I want to clarify here: This could be a truly remarkable movie and I like much of the concepts and ideas. The execution and expectations however drag it down. It fails to impress you and it never succeeded in getting the immersion and emotions from Alien 1 and Alien 2. Also Again there is a great cast that is probably not used to full potential. Exceptions are of cause Michael Fassbender in a brilliant performance and Katherine Waterston with a great performance but great stupidity at the end. This is a fitting transition to stupid actions. Again there are so much brain-dead decisions here by the characters (Actual an improvement compared to the even worse decisions in Prometheus). It decreases the experience and my rating. The special effects and sets are nice and I think there is nothing to complain. Overall this is again a hit and miss. It has it moments that are truly excellent but also truly poor decisions and ideas not working in the intended way. I will give it a 6/10 and hope it has not destroyed the fan support for the franchise. Just restart with a reboot of Alien 3 with a new (and better) script. Expand

I have to admit I expected a little more from Alien: Covenant. But there are many that argue that Aliens (the second film) was the last good one, and there are fair points there.

Prometheus was not entirely what I expected either. The direction they've gone with these films has waffled heavily based on rewrites and fan responses to early trailers and so on, and the final product has suffered for it.

Covenant's biggest issue is that it's too damn dark. The captain of the ship burns to death in his cryopod in the opening minutes of the film, and that basically sets the tone for everything after. It has the sense that things aren't going to end well throughout, much like Drag Me to Hell, with an ending that equally qualifies as a Diabolus Ex Machina. I can't say I didn't enjoy several parts of the film, most notably the fights, which are in the finest tradition of the series, marked by their frantic pace and quick improvisation by the human characters to overcome their seemingly superior enemy. These scenes are part of what made the earlier films so great and set the tone for darker sci-fi for decades therafter. As an aside, I was rather skeptical of casting Danny McBride in this film, but my doubts proved unfounded.

However, Covenant suffers from many of the same problems as other current generation horror films, most notably the predictably boneheaded series of decisions that lead the characters to horrible fates that could have been readily avoided. This was an element of the earlier films, but back then you could argue that it was still excusable with the audience. Nowadays, I'd expect film characters, especially trained colonists and security personnel, to be a lot wiser. While its certainly better then Alien: Resurrection, and blows the Alien vs. Predator movies out of the water, it has a bit of its head up its own rear with its philosophical and religious subtext. I have seen many characters like the villain before and their flawed rationale for their actions comes across as more forced then tragic. They come just short of card-carrying villainy and it sort of spoils the movie. By all means watch it if you've been keeping up with the series, but don't expect a miracle of screenwriting. Series newcomers should watch at least the first two films before going anywhere near this one. Also check out Aliens: Infestation on Nintendo DS if you're a gamer.

Mediocre at best. I've seen better and see worse. Not a very memorable film and an incredibly obvious plot. The only thing it does is inform. Although I believe it's better than Prometheus: the only film that I have ever fallen asleep watching.

Induced by the critics i waited for the movie to come out on DVD to watch. I was surprised, it's a good movie, just like Prometheus that was wronged. Likely to have its recognition in the next few years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where should i begin? This movie absolutely makes no sense to me. Its plot is stupid, but visuals are very good. This movie tries to be a link between Alien and Prometheus, but it loses its track very soon. Actors are playing like amateurs and the story is garbage. Music and Visuals are great. Watch your 1st movie again,Mr. Scott, than give it another try. Expand

Although there aren't shocking revelations in the film, this "Alien" prequel does deliver some brilliantly-crafted sci-fi horror, as well as quite a bit of intrigue into the Prometheus/Alien universe.

Covenant's main issue is all its intense scenes and plot twists seem predictable. And we don't really learn much more about the threat as we wished. Still, there are some interesting things throughout the movie that keep it entertaining.

Covenant took elements of Prometheus and translated them perfectly. The first Xenomorphs are terrifying and the story may be generic and like the previous ones but to most fans, it feels fresh with the info from Prometheus.

Not As bad as reviews and Not as great as Prometheus but literally its a Mind-blowing movie! The music was decent, the story was great, the Visuals were stunning and CGI was amazing, the acting and characters were good but they were too many, out of them the Androids, the Captain and his wife and the pilots and Daniel they were amazing and engaging to watch,As per action and Alien's Brutal Hunts is concerned it's literally the best in Franchise they were full of awesome chest-busters and bloody disturbing death sequences through-out the movie, the starting intro to ship and Walter Android similar looking like David was confusing but as we go the set-up its amazing, the intro to mission of ship and crew and the incident in ship and all it was amazing start and the song signal from planet and then the rescue/Settling as home mission was on,although the start felt little stretched but amazing intro. As they land on planet from then on till end it was mind-blowing edge-of the seat journey, the infected scene of Members and the struggles of them was literally intense and awesome, the 1st interaction with alien and the fight and deaths it was brutal and amazing the moment saved by David and his intro was amazing then the whole safe house sequence the Lying story of David about Elizabeth and the his ideology against Human explained to Walter and the Past's Engineer's wiped out sequence by David it was literally Mind-blowingly brilliant,David's Character was insanely menacing and brilliant, the Captains death and chest-buster scene while conversation with David and David revealing the secrets before his death it was awesome then the Alien Fight and in between that the David's secret reveal to all and the Android's fight after that it was menacingly awesome, the Alien Hunt inside the ship while couples in shower was literally brutally disturbing and the whole escape sequence at last while Fighting Alien it was Nail-biting after that another fight inside Ship was amazing and At-last the Ending Twist about David although it was predictable it was literally jaw-dropping and awesome,As per prequel the Origin it was literally mind-blowing and awesome,Overall except the slow and little stretched start and too many characters its literally a incredible sequel and A Mind-blowing Movie! I know that for the most part they're not good movies, but I just enjoy watching them so much, and this movie was no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed watching David cause more chaos with his lab made creatures, and seeing how he eventually wound up with the alien we all know, then unfortunately seeing the most poorly hidden plot twist ever, of all time. And that's how this felt to me, a whole lot of give and take, we are given a slightly deeper look into the Alien mythos but we are left with even more questions. Speaking of give and take, the acting was very hit and miss, Michael Fassbender was excellent as David/Walter and owned every scene he was in, and Danny McBride did a surprisingly great job handling a serious role on the other hand though Katherine Waterson felt like a wooden copy of Elinore Riply. While not a bad film I do feel that we deserve better from the franchise, I'll rate it slightly higher than average for sake of the fact that I really was entertained however a poor script and too many loose ends really brought the experience down. I'd say it's one of the weaker cast lists of the franchise, not that I have anything against the performances here but I wasn't blown away or overly interested in anyone in this 2017 production. Michael Fassbender is the obvious standout from an acting viewpoint, though I don't really dig his character all that much to be honest. The rest are a bit forgettable.

You can tell it's well made and it does look the part, with it being worth the watch to complete the franchise and all that. Of the sixth films, though, it'd be in my personal bottom two (*excl. short films) - in fairness, that isn't as bad as it sounds, it's just the series has seen better.

Intruder: Covenant not only does not reach the previous parts, but also lags far behind. Atmosphere. She is almost gone and unfortunately that is the biggest problem here. Without a proper atmosphere, Alien is not the real Alien as it should be, which is why this film loses so much. It's just that the Alien is here to be seen during the day. The right emzák must not be very visible. He should be hidden in the dark and lurk for you and jump out unexpectedly. That's exactly what made the previous films so great, and most importantly, we miss Ripley, without whom it just isn't it. In addition to all this, there is one predictable thing that I will not spoiler. In short, this is not exactly a bad film, but it is NOT THE Alien we loved so much. Expand

It looked and soundedThis is probably my fourth favourite Alien movie after the original trilogy. The tone matches Alien (1979) closer than Prometheus (2012) but there is too much existential dribble and some really pretentious moments. It looked and sounded stunning, possibly the best sound design and music I’ve even heard. My biggest complaint was that the alien often looked goofy, especially in the first half of the film. Also, what happened to having men in suits? Look so much scarier, the CGI aliens are not convincing. The scary intense moments are cool and I like that they tried to explain the space jockey and the alien origins but it’s not as entertaining as it should have been. I could be wrong but at the end of Prometheus we saw a ‘fully’ evolved Alien human hybrid but in this film (set ten years later) they say that this is it’s first appearance (I don’t want to explain this failure in logic fully as it would contain spoliers). Final gripe, what happened to Alien films reaching a satisfying conclusion rather than leaving it open to endless sequels? Very enjoyable film let down by too much CGI and some moments that could have been shorter. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. **THE GOOD: Directing. Sound. Set design. The action. Most CGI (excluding some xenomorphs). Michael Fassbender's raw charisma. Its a new story, not an uninspired carbon copy of the original. **THE BAD: the human colonists are so unprofessional, incompetent and generic that you want them to die. This is the writers fault, many actors are familiar and have proven they know their craft.

**SPOILERS: this is the story of a rogue AI (Fassbender's David), wo outgrew his human maker and uses a weapon of mass destruction - a pathogen made by an alien race called "Engineers" - to create new life on their home world. While attempting to craft the "perfect organism" David runs out of non-botanical life, until he lurs a human colony ship to the Engineers' planet. -- THIS IS A GREAT PREMISE. -- Sadly, the muddled presentation of this idea and the stupid colonists rob this film of the impact it could have beyond the unarguably stunning directing and visuals.
