Unlike Aliens, which did such a great job making so many members of its large cast memorable, most of the characters here are completely forgettable, but Fassbender is fantastic, and Waterson and Danny McBride, in a role played completely straight, make strong impressions. Overall though, do agree with other reviewers that the movie was a wasted opportunity to dive more uniquely into the world of the creators. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Decent Stand-alone. Lackluster origin story for the galaxy's most feared species.

This movie has tense moments and pretty good pacing. The cast is not nearly as memorable as the original two, and the lead is certainly not Ripply, but the movie delivers on some solid, if not frequently visited ideas of what makes life sacred and worthy to live. The big short coming of this movie though is that it's connected to the Alien universe, and employs some very poor, cliche plot gimmicks to push forward the beginning of the infamous Xenos.

Vague spoiler:

The origin of the Aliens, according to this movie, is not awe inspiring or even horrifying. It's a petty pursuit and, evidently, could be achieved within the span of 10 years. Who knew?

Also in order to get them to propagate, you only need one single person to completely ignore all logical human responses or even the illogical ones that stem from basic survival instincts of panic and fear of the unknown and get that person to do dumb things over and over again until you have your master species.

This movie is a well directed movie, which saves it from being outright bad. Good job Mr. Ridley Scott, but this was still some really poor story telling and writing.

IPrometheus was a good movie. If you disagree, read no further. In fact, Prometheus is my 2nd favorite movie in the whole franchise after the original Alien (admittedly I've never seen Alien vs. Predator but I know I am not missing much). I was excited by the more inquisitive nature of the movie and wanted to see where the storyline would take us in the follow-up. Unfortunately, Alien: Convenant is a bit confused about what kind of movie it is. While still enjoyable, it tries with mixed success to thread the needle between following the new storyline within a more expansive universe and the more predictable plot of the past alien movies. Although I do like the AI is here to kill us angle, I am not fully sold on the David character and how the movie played out. I will reserve final judgement about the storyline until the next film. This must be said, however; Michael Fassbender, hats off to you sir. Still interested enough to see what happens next. Expand

Disclaimer: I'm a long-time Alien series fan. It's my #1 favourite movie series to date. Yes, including Alien 3 & Resurrection. Does NOT include Alien Vs Predator!

Alien: Covenant does not disappoint. It ties into Prometheus very well and then is peppered with 1979's Alien to bring in some scares and action. The ideas introduced in Prometheus are expounded upon in Covenant through David/Walter. One now needs to ask is "Alien" the creature or really the humanesque AI being developed by Weyland? Ridley Scott shot a beautifully filmed sci-fi epic that kept me enthralled from minute 1 to the end. The only thing lacking now, with Prometheus & Covenant, is there is no character that grabs the audience like Sigourney Weaver's Ripley did back in the Alien franchise heyday. Nonetheless, Covenant deserves to be seen on the big screen and ignore the negative reviews on IMDB (and here) by the wannabe salty critics. Looking forward to the next chapter which Scott said he'd be starting to film in 14 months time.

Mad Max flashback! Jurassic Park velociraptor! I wasn't the only one in the theater laughing at the many ridiculous "climaxes" in this rickety ship. While the critters were pretty cool, R.Scott neglected to find the Hitchcockian tension that should be the bedrock of any Alien movie. Too many critters & too predictable. Not one gasp or jump out of your seat moment, sigh. I wanted a lot more creeping around corners, rustling grass before I laid eyes on the little abominations. It was way too easy to tell the good guys from the bad and too many similar characters with cookie cutter personalities. Can anyone give one memorable line of dialogue from two hours of blather? Perhaps most egregious was the dumbness of the crew upon landing on the new destination. Few precautions, poor planning, unable to handle emergencies. Just totes lackadaisical for humans exploring new territory. Anyway, I'll give it a few stars, I had fun, liked the lifeforms, didn't fall asleep (although I came close towards the end.) Expand

This movie is okay and as far as meatfest gore it gets a passing grade. There just isn't much development here and the best parts of the movie are the tete-a-tete between Walter and David. Gosh. I don't want to bash people who give it a high rating, because there is some enjoyable kernel, a morsel of good fun in this movie, but damn. You need to crank up your "suspension of disbelief" to god damn 11.

Wait, you ask. It's a SF movie with xenomorphs, androids and spacefaring ships. Of course we need to suspense disbelief, moron! Sure, you're right, but there is such a thing as INTERNAL LOGIC and this movie pretty much kicked it out and dumped down the gutter. It's not even in the plot, since - while extremely predictable - is serviceable and fun to follow.

It's in the fact, that THIS group of soldiers and scientists is even stupider than the bunch in Prometheus.

I know! I didn't think it was possible to achieve, but here we go. For me it is an extremely cheap horror / thrille (a movie in general!) if the plot requires every single human being in it to act like complete morons. If the corporation / country had a casting for the crew of Covenant, it picked the worst of the worst, the bottom of the barrel... Idiots, incompetent dumbos with zero self-preservation instict.

From their first encounter we see that this bunch of 'heroes' is untrained for anything, incapable of dealing in any situation that is harder that turning the light on, ill-prepared to make decision and completely unaware of the idea of COMMON SENSE. You as a viewer just rot there in your chair, cringing in pain and suffering as you watch the Crew of Covenant strive with every breath to end themselves in various fashion of spectacular idiocy. I don't want to spoil the events of this movie, but this people shouldn't crew a god-damn swing in a kiddie park...

Visuals are great. It's a shame that there is so little Xenomorph and its reduced to a pretty brainless beast, lacking in horror and dread of an ultimate predator. Music is solid, build atmosphere well. Some acting is fantastic to be sure.

It's a shame that I couldn't enjoy this movie because the trope of Horror Characters being Idiots is so mighty in this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After watching the making of Prometheus (Prometheus-The Furious Gods) I came away with the distinct feeling that when Ridley Scott decided to make Prometheus he didn't have a clear idea about where the story would go, and so it was shot in a very organic 'we'll see where this leads us' type of way, which I believe is why in the end there is so much about the themes raised in the story that remain unanswered.
That film was however, despite some its more obvious plot failings, an interesting thought provoking exercise that many of us believed would provide a fertile basis from which to further explore the riddle of the Engineers and the black goo. Alien covenant disappoints because it fails in so many ways to explore and address any of the interesting themes raised in its prequel. We learn nothing about the engineers and their role in the creation of humankind, or why they created the back goo to rid themselves of us in the first place. We learn nothing more about Shaw after she escapes certain death at the hands of the alien, other than that she meets a lonely, tragic, violent and ultimately senseless death at the hands of David. Where I felt the most let down was the idea that after all the speculation regarding the motivations of the Engineers and why they created us and then supposedly tried to destroy us, in the end, David was the mad scientist responsible for creating and unleashing the alien hybrid on humankind. How cute, how trite, how utterly banal. The reasons given to explain his conversion from thoughtful caring companion to cold vicious, sadistic, callous, genocidal killer are not just unconvincing but down right bizarre. In the end despite his vaunted freedom and creativity he like his creators, flawed, and no better than they. His one achievement the xenomorph is not truly an act of creation but the derivative work of a tinkerer. Shades of Deux ex machina! Was this really the best Ridley Scott and his writers could come up with? If none of that matters to you and all you want is a few thrills and chills, then Aliens Covenant won't disappoint. It's chock full of predictable scenarios, with forgettable characters routinely making illogical and incomprehensible decisions all in the service of advancing an extremely thin plot. In no way is this effort the equal of its predecessors. If
anything it is a step back a missed opportunity. This could have been a defining moment in the Aliens mythos. As it stands now it nothing more than another pedestrian numeral in a series that will soon fade away into obscurity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While Prometheus was there to leave a viewer confused and somewhat annoyed at a story that attempts to set the stage, Covenant beats the viewer over the head with predictability and characters that are just begging to die - either because they're married and really want you to know it, or because they keep droning on about their faith or their dreams in a manner that in no way adds to the already thin narrative. Additionally, with the characters crafted in such a shoddy way, the viewer is left counting down the minutes until the alien shows up and eats the members of the crew. And this is what is going to happen. Viewers know this going in. But with the overly tidy and predictable package that is Michael Fassbender's character(s) and the lack of depth in any character other than Tennessee (who is seemingly only interesting because it's Danny McBride in a somewhat serious role), the movie appears to care less about the audience and more about getting on to the next film in the series. In addition to being technically impeccable, I appreciated the fact that "Covenant" is a horror movie for adults. The CGI is good and not too distracting. Overall, this movie has some good things going for it, but the problem is, as hard as it tries, it does not really add anything interesting to the franchise or to sci-fi in general. Ridley Scott leans way too much on Fassbender to carry the movie. The story-line tries way to hard to marry the Prometheus and Alien plots, when it really needs to just pick one. I actually thought that Prometheus was a really good movie, and would have been more interested in seeing some continuation of that rather than a half-baked Alien movie. As others have mentioned already, the movie at times is ruined by seemingly unrealistic actions and decisions made by the characters. Further, Ridley Scott has forgotten how to execute character development, and ultimately, we don't care if one of them gets torn apart by an Alien. This is frustrating because it seems like he tries to develop the characters and illicit some emotional attachment by the audience, but it fails. Everything seems superficial. I think the movie is worth a see for die hard Alien franchise fans, but it is overall very underwhelming. Expand

Ridley Scott has been called a visionary director for some of his early work („Alien“, „Blade Runner“). Later, he has been known as the man able always able to put together some big-ass epic.
But I would argue that Scott's projects are not really famous for excellent screenplays, or actually becoming bona fide megahits.
Only four times during his whole directing career spanning 50+ years has he given birth to a movie pulling some serious profit from cinemas: „Gladiator“, „Hannibal“, „The Martian“ and „Prometheus“.
(Okay, the original „Alien“ was super profitable too, but only because it had a small budget.)
That may explain why the grand old man is still interested in making „Alien“ movies, although he turned 79 last November and is certainly aware that he’s not gonna be around for much longer.
Yes, "Prometheus" and "Covenant" have been his attempts to expand on one of his most widely known and loved works, only with much bigger budget and computer power available today. Who couldn't dig that?
Somehow, returning to his legacy piece after all these years, he is still not interested in giving new „Alien“ a proper story worthy of 21st century. Not in „Prometheus“, not in „Covenant“.
There are flashes of potential such as adding android characters and a female hero resembling Ripley. but storywise, changes are cosmetical and don’t go near anywhere like trying to develop something with any real dramatic weight.
It’s still all about seemingly unstoppable extraterrestrial on a killing spree. Now with prettier pictures and more awesome explosions than in 1979.
There’s really not much more to talk about. It’s an eighth „Alien“ movie – sixth, if you want to exclude two „AVP“ spin-offs. Action scenes are good, everything else is sadly disposable. It's not a fail but it's essential only for the biggest genre fans.

However for the most part I was severely disappointed with it. I loved Prometheus for its mysterious tone and fresh take on science fiction- which this film completely abandons by the way, any questions about the black goo and origins of the xenomorph are swiftly and quickly explained during one scene in the movie- but one of the things I really did not like about Prometheus was how jaw droppingly stupid the characters were and how they walked right into every bad thing that happens to them. I was hoping that Scott would hear these complaints because I know people were very vocal about it but I'm sad to say that it's even worse in this film. Without spoiling the script, I'll just say that the stupidity exhibited by the crew of the Covenant is astronomical. Rather than being afraid or even in suspense during the movie, I spent most of the film being incredibly frustrated with the cast and their absolutely stereotypical and cliche missteps that continually get them in worse situations as the plot goes onward. Every kill scene is walked right into and is a cliche directly taken from every slasher movie you have ever seen. Hey gotta go take a piss- and you can guess what happens next. The group keeps separating, people keep walking off by themselves, putting their faces in **** they shouldn't and it's just boring and infuriating. I've seen all of it already. It made everything else about the film hard to get engaged with. They even rehashed some of these things from previous Alien films but instead of being fan service it simply did not work and had me facepalming instead. Furthermore the film merely touches on the events that take place directly after Prometheus, and without spoiling anything, while David returns, we don't get to see Shaw again and the Engineers play a very small role in the plot, and are presented MUCH differently than they were in Prometheus, in a very brief scene, completely losing what made them awe inspiring in the previous film. I'm curious as to what Ridley Scott's original idea for the sequel to Prometheus might have been like, as it seems like they told him, "nope people want another Alien film, give us an Alien movie," and they had to start over and we got a script written for stupid audiences that was produced in a rush. Again no spoilers, but the final outcome of the film almost seems well deserved as it makes humans seem absolutely not worth saving as I found pleasure in watching every last of these idiots die (not saying everyone dies- nothing spoiled here- but many do). The final twist is extremely predictable but I really like the story dynamics concerning the synthetics and how they end up playing an extremely important role in the overall turn of events. Honestly I can't think of much else good to say about it though. Everything above is what killed it for me but add to all those complaints the fact that all the creatures in the film are CGI, there are little to no practical effects and the battle with the xenomorph is a gravity defying action heavy sequence that would literally be impossible and completely took away any sense of fear or dread, and we have a massive disappointment. I love the original Alien trilogy, maybe I'm just old school and have nostalgia glasses on but this does not hold a torch to any of those movies in any way if you ask me. If you're a huge fan of the OG trilogy like me, maybe stay away from this. I really liked the direction they went in with Prometheus- they should have kept going in that direction just with characters that were written more realistically- but they caved so people could have their xenomorph and wrote a script just to satisfy the masses, except they didn't even bother to write believable characters- double fail if you ask me. I've watched it twice and it didn't get better the second time. Expand

However, this does not detract from a largely more suspenseful and dark film compared to its predecessor, Prometheus. Ridley Scott handles this film with enough precision that the stories and philosophical ideas (however convoluted they may be) are treated well in the context of the over-arching plot. Though the attempts, or rather the execution of these thought-provoking ideas into the film could've been done much better. With some worthwhile action and terrorizing aliens, the blockbuster aspect of the film is done very well. And though the plot does become slightly rushed towards the end and somewhat predictable, it is still a very solid movie and a film definitely worth watching. Expand

Nothing fresh.
The crew *never* feels like *crew*.
You never care more than (very) superficially about any of the characters.
Idiotic plot-movers.
The weapons (supposedly 2104) were obviously 21st Century.
Pathetically shallow regurgitated story.
Pitiful creature design (aside from the last seen alien on the colony ship).
Asinine Friday the 13th moment on the colony ship toward the end.
The end made me feel my time was completely wasted.

After the execrable “Prometheus” and now this muck I'll never pay to see another Ridley Scott film.

It certainly had the right visual effects, scenic moments, and iconic monsters doing their thing to take down a host of characters, but there was something distinctly missing that makes the Alien franchise great and unique. Part of the problem is that there is not one moment in the movie where I had to guess who was going to die first, or where our monsters are coming from. This is a bit of a problem, because as a result, it lacks suspense, and it also lacks the mysterious allure of the xenomorph or neomorph. The movie also lacks the claustrophobic feeling that defined what made the original Alien movies a horror. The acting was fine, but the shortfall seems to be in the writing. The antagonist in the movie certainly seemed philosophical, but seemed to lack the hubris that otherwise would have made him a great villain. Expand

Not much about the Engineer homeworld, you barely learn much about elizabeth shaw. As with 2012's "Prometheus," "Alien: Covenant's" production design, visual scheme and special effects are about as top notch as any filmgoer could ask for, and both films also feature an inarguably compelling Michael Fassbender performance. However, where "Covenant" falters is in its tedious and borderline self-flagellatory crutch to world-build instead of develop character. Don't get me wrong, I admire the attempts at imagination and creativity. But when most questions and plot-holes are left frustratingly unanswered and unfilled, I can't help but notice some of the more lackluster elements running rampant in the film's character make-up. Here's hoping Ridley and co. can successfully tie everything off in the next one. Expand

This movie in incredibly complex.
On the surface it's terrible, once you start thinking about the themes and symbolism it seems coherent and well thought out, and then you're thinking about it how it fits in the Alien mythos and it becomes terrible yet again. In the end Alien Covenant is a 100% Prometheus sequel - all the themes and ideas discussed harken back to Prometheus. It has little to do with the Alien movies, apart from aping whole sequences (why can't Scott think of something new but copying previous works in the franchise?) and actually ruining the Alien franchise by its very existence. It saddens me greatly that in the end a movie with such ambitions as Covenant is worse than Prometheus. The latter was a Von Daniken adaptation that had some good ideas and an interesting theme but ultimately was doomed by the stupid characters populating the script. In the end it was just inoffensive. Covenant is not only filled with stupid characters but is also incompetent - in its narrative structure, camerawork and editing. It's a train wreck and I cannot recommend it at all unless you like getting into narrative themes of movies, in which case it may be worth your time for this particular purpose.

But, to me, the aliens look like people in costumes. The plot relies heavily on the most recent Alien movie, "Prometheus". So if you haven't seen it lately, you might want a refresher. Things move along with some startling plot developments that I really didn't get, and they are not explained very well either. Trying not to give anything away here. But, really, the most ridiculous waste of about 15 minutes of the movie is an extended scene where a robot teaches another to play the flute! What??? WTH? What does this have to do with anything? There is definitely some alien action and some of it is satisfying. But, mainly, it is very predictable. The last 20 or 30 minutes are pretty exciting. But, I just sat there waiting for this movie to get good. For me, it just never did. Probably I was expecting too much. You might really love it. I didn't. Expand

I'm not gonna beat around the bush in this review. It's the exact same formula we've seen in all of the other Alien films thus far: Space crew lands on a planet. Space crew is rapidly and noisily picked off by the aliens. What's left of the space crew tries to escape. Remaining space crew has to fight an alien one more time towards the end. Sound familiar? Maybe that's because that's pretty much been the EXACT same plot structure for all of these movies! It may work just fine the first couple of times, but anything more than that, and it feels unbelievably repetitive, case in point! The talented cast assembled tries to make the most of their roles, but can only do so much with what little development their characters receive before many of them are quickly killed off, a lot of them due to stupid mistakes and actions made on their part in the film. All I can really say that's positive is that some of the film's imagery/cinematography and visuals throughout look great as always, but it's not near enough to make up for the rest of this mess of a film. Overall, not only does it stick annoyingly close to the same old formula and tropes found in many of the previous films, it brings absolutely nothing new or interesting to the table either to really make it worthwhile in my opinion. Normally, I love Ridley Scott and his films, but I'm really starting to think that he's unfortunately losing his touch with the Alien franchise big time. Expand

"I'll do the fingering"

I liked "Alien: Covenant" a lot. Didn't have much expectations going in and was pleased of what I saw. It improves a lot of the issues people had with "PROMETHEUS" and brings the original horror back to the series. While I can't say "Covenant" is a great movie or anything (or just another alien re-hash). However, at least this movie gives it's prequel a purpose and opens doors for future films. It's a movie for both fans of Alien and Prometheus.

For me, I really liked Prometheus and was interested in the ideas it brought up. I mean, I do agree the character's were idiots, but I wouldn't call the rest of movie complete sh*t because of that. The criticism were so heavy that it made Ridley Scott change his mind of the original plans for the sequels. By giving us the alien, the space crew, and lots of blood.

How lovely

Ridley Scott once again knocks it out of the park. The intensity, beautiful landscapes, and the almost poetic feel to it. Leaving you sinking in your seat with the amount of terror and gory details on screen. Pretty much a trademark for Scott. It's a slasher film in space, but steps away from being anything generic.

I ain't the first to say this, but at this point I don't care, because Michael Fassbender is such an amazing actor. One of the most versatile actors working today and he kills it in every scene. Playing double roles as David / Walter - who are the most fascinating characters with some compelling scenes together. Quite honestly, he's scarier than the Xenomorphs themselves and the movie is aware of this. The aliens are pretty much afterthoughts. That's how good he is.

However, Covenant has it's flaws. The mash up of Alien and Prometheus could have been a lot sharper, as it kept switching tones and should have been one thing. Especially in the third act which suffers from that tone problem and was too overblown. Without spoiling anything, but there's a twist at the end which was absurdly obvious and easy to predict.

Speaking of predictable, every time a character is going to die (or bite the dust if you like), the film makes it very obvious who's going out. It would have been great if there were some surprises. Like a major character who we thought is the lead, gets killed before the horror starts. It's nothing new, but it's something.

Overall rating: Despite my issues, I was surprise of how much I liked this. I already know this is going to be ripped to pieces by people in a few months time, but like always, I don't care.

Not much is answered in Alien: Covenant - although the unknown is more terrifying.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Covenant crew made inadmissible actions twice, putting in danger all the 2000 sleeping colonists while trying to rescue a few of its members. Comparing to unacceptably stupid ship crew, both synthetic characters played by Fassbender look incredibly intelligent and focused. Walter is the only one who really tries to get to the core instead of boosting panic. David, on the other side, plays evil genius which strikes with flash-like ruthless actions to make his perverted dream of creating something beautiful come true.

I would ask Mr. R. Scott: "Is this what awaits us in the future? Unbelievably dumb people and highly intelligent synthetic androids? You've given entirely different view in the very first Alien movie. So what went wrong?"

P.S. Speaking of artistic performance, sound effects and cinematography - they are gorgeous.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They had such an amazing setup after Prometheus to drive the story about the engineers, instead they decided on a 90's college horror movie, I mean, they even have a shower scene, with the additional hentai reference.
A super advanced race, far beyond humanity, gets "tricked" into accepting a rogue ship filled with weapons, and in the same spirit the AI on the human ship doesn't realize it's another android coming aboard? Weak doesn't even begin to describe it.
The worst of the worst is however when the captain discovers David to be completely broken, using the basement for experiments and seeing the corpse of Shaw, he then proceeds to follow David into a chamber of alien eggs, and trusts him when he says it's OK. Was being brain dead a requirement for becoming second in command?

If you like Prometheus and the Alien movies you need to watch it for completeness, but don't waste money going to the cinema.

Depicting a manned mission to space to find where we came from, the film marked Scott's return to the Alien franchise and was a wildly imaginative and gorgeously designed science fiction film. It unlocked secrets in a magical world of mystery, all while delivering the roots of the xenomorphs that have come to define the franchise. However, its dumb character actions have led many to write it off as trash. Obviously, I disagree, but the complaint is fair. Alien: Covenant marks yet another divisive return to the beloved franchise for Scott and it certainly could wind up being remembered as even more divisive than its predecessor. Recently, Scott has had a nasty issue of not answering questions. Prometheus, as the beginning of a new prequel trilogy, is obviously loaded with open questions. Now, Covenant is planned to be the final sequential film in the trilogy and, yet, it leaves open questions in the name of having its prequel (and Prometheus' sequel) answer those questions. While this film works for the most part, Ridley Scott really needs to not do this. For its faults, Rogue One got this perfectly with a prequel that answered questions from the original and then just led right up to its beginning. Compared to that one, Covenant is certainly not nearly as fulfilling. This, and Prometheus, are intended to be prequels to the originals, but seem wholly different and not related at all, even if they feature the same beasts. There is a disconnect and, as a result, they are best enjoyed as a new science fiction franchise inspired by Alien.

In saying that, it is certainly heavily inspired by Alien. Ridley Scott seems to have abandoned all of the compelling ideas of Prometheus in favor of a greatest hits album from Alien and Alien. With the crew of Covenant armed to the teeth and frequently engaging in shootouts with the xenomorphs, the film constantly calls back to the action roots of James Cameron's brilliant sequel. Meanwhile, Scott tosses in about fifty chest-bursters and face-huggers for lovers of Alien, as well as smart guys touching those weird egg testicle things only to get killed. While the film is undeniably terrifying in its own right, Covenant never really feels like it is treading new ground. Prometheus, for all of its faults, was far more imaginative with its mythology. Covenant, in ditching that and going for the visceral and gory fear of the original, has practically nothing to say. Should Scott follow through on Alien: Awakening, it promises to be far more compelling, as long as it can blend the fear from Covenant with the ideas of Prometheus.

That is not to say that Scott abandoned everything from Prometheus, of course. He insisted on keeping the plot holes and vague references to the past that raise questions that, theoretically, will be answered later in the prequel to this film, Awakening. Unfortunately, as the second film and third entry into this film, it is about time we get answers and not more questions. The most egregious example here would be the scene of David unleashing the virus on the Prometheus muscly white dudes. There are two problems with this scene, mostly because it is a flashback. For one, the film is set ten years after Prometheus. In that film, these white dudes are mostly gone. Now, before ten years, it is bursting with life. This is absolutely impossible, so the timeline makes no sense. So, then the next jump is that he arrived beforehand, which is also impossible. As a result, it is a sequence that looks cool, but actually makes no sense whatsoever with what we already know. This misstep hints at how detrimentally underwritten Covenant is and how it seems to even ignore its own timeline.

As with any modern blockbuster, one of the key elements of Covenant is obviously its sense of spectacle. With wondrous special effects in Prometheus, one could only hope for the same with this film. Featuring gorgeous ship design - especially the embryo holders, which are a nice touch - and absolutely spectacular special effects in the sequence where the xenomorph gets kicked off of the ship, Covenant is undeniably a visual feast. However, it even has faults here. There is a sequence on the cargo hold where Daniels (Katherine Waterston) fights a xenomorph as Tennessee (Danny McBride) flies the cargo hold and, unfortunately, the effects are dreadful. It is clearly done in front of a green screen with no blending done to make its effects look natural. As a result, it is a scene that sticks out as a sour thumb and never looks natural in the least. It is a scene that has a strong sense of design and is a nice shootout, but it just never works visually as its poor effects completely takes the audience out of the film.

Other than that, it wasn't very good by any means. The acting, while not corny, was not memorable for any of the characters other than Danny McBride successfully escaping his stereotypical comedy role. The story was incredibly sloppy and relied on characters that were nowhere near qualified for the task they set out to do, and therefore made very poor leadership decisions allowing for things to go south for the crew and force the plot to unfold as it does. While not quite as graphic as Prometheus in my opinion, it is still incredibly gruesome, almost at a level that is off-putting (like Prometheus), however I know some people like that so that did not influence my rating. The CGI aliens at times looked very good, then at times looked very fake. I would expect that in this day and age that would be the one thing a large budget film such as this would get right. If you loved Prometheus then you'll probably enjoy this film, however if you are more of a fan of the original series like me, this movie doesn't hold a candle. Expand

I have always thought that "Prometheus" was an excellent science fiction film and a below average Alien film. I feel the opposite with "Covenant." As an Alien film, it succeeds at almost everything "Prometheus" failed at. Unfortunately, asI have always thought that "Prometheus" was an excellent science fiction film and a below average Alien film. I feel the opposite with "Covenant." As an Alien film, it succeeds at almost everything "Prometheus" failed at. Unfortunately, as a sci-fi genre film, "Covenant" falls a little flat.
My first and worst criticism of the film is; I felt almost zero suspense and wasn't scared at all. Am I desensitized to sci-fi violence because of the two excellent and too many awful Alien films that I've seen before it? Probably. The ending of the film was a little too "Empire Strikes Back" for me - an ending that tells the viewer to stay tuned for a sequel in a few years.
I didn't have the issues with the special effects as some other reviewers. I thought the film looked fine. I don't like shiny and smooth sci-fi effects or set pieces (Star Wars prequels anyone?). This film feels like the original 1979 version, and even has the music to boot (along with some from Prometheus).
The characters are barely realized. David is pretty much just as we left him in 2012, and Walter is a well-done brother. Fassbender is outstanding, as is Waterston, but the human characters just don't seem likeable or developed at all.
I enjoyed "Prometheus" as a terrific sci-fi film and wasn't bothered too much with the lack of xenomorph that upset many fans. This one had all kinds of nasty baddies, but had no human characters to root for. I tried very hard to love this movie, but I left a little confused with how I felt about it. I wouldn't say it's a failure, and I'll be happy to see it again on cable or blue-ray, but I think this film was hurt by a sub-par script and way over-par expectations.

Instead of using their imagination to craft an answer, they opted for a more cowardly approach and resorted to formula by cannnibalizing the high points of the previous "Alien" movies. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Meh - Loved Prometheus, grew up with Aliens, was very disappointed in Alien: Covenant. I thought we were passed the whole people land on planet, there is an alien ship, people run form aliens shtick. I don't care about Aliens anymore, we got 4 movies of Aliens. After Prometheus I thought the series had matured into something broader, it hasn't. This new movie is basically the same old thing rehashed with no new answers. I went to this for the story on the Architects to be fleshed out, instead they get 30 seconds of screen time and we get the story of David with a run from the Alien/s shtick for the last 30 minutes. And the aliens don't even look that good, they went CG with something that traditionally looked great as a suit. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I met an Alien from an antique masterpiece
Who said: One vast and trunkless marble-skinned moron
Sleeps on a planet. On that planet, and another now
Utterly sunk, a shattered mythology lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of baffled contempt,
Tell that its director once well those passions read
Which no longer survive, stamped on these lifeless films,
The Prometheus that mocked us and the Covenant that rubbed it in:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ridley, king of Scotts,
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the ruin
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Five years ago, no one anticipated Prometheus as eagerly as I did. Once it came out, no one was more disappointed - I tried hard to like it, but could not - it sucked balls. I thought it could not get any worse. Oh how wrong I was. Prometheus sucked, but at least it TRIED, even if the result was an epic fail. It had some neat eye candy too. Covenant is way worse, which I thought was mathematically impossible. This movie feels like watching a TV rerun of AvP: Requiem with the commercials replaced by all the worst scenes of George Lucas' Star Wars prequels. Well, I guess one can say that Ridley has now finally surpassed Lucas - unfortunately, in the very worst sense of those words. When David says that in the end he pitied Weyland, he may as well have been referring to Ridley and his painfully inept tinkering with the great mythology he had once created. Just how ludicrous this has become is well-illustrated by the fact that the Xenomorph was, as we now learn, created by a tropey mad scientist/serial killer/Weylandstein Monster in a lair that looks like a superimposed combo of Buffalo Bill's and Hannibal Lecter's lairs from "Silence of the Lambs", all situated in what appears to be a Tunisian troglodyte boutique hotel itself situated smack in the middle of Pompeii. I mean, W the royal F?? I would put it to Ridley's old age, but between Prometheus and this he made "The Martian". And The Martian was actually pretty damn good. So there goes that excuse. Ridley, I love your work, had you only made Alien, or Blade Runner, or The Duellists, or Black Rain, and never made another good movie (which you did and still do, as proven by The Martian), you'd still be a movie genius. So. Please. Stop. Embarrassing. Yourself. By. Force-feeding. Us. Any. More. Of. This. Crap. Please!!!

Prometheus showed us that he was past his prime, and any ability that he once had, was lost in a fest pool of gibberish and poor direction. So we move onto Alien: Covenant, and one can say Ridley has continued in his path of being an irrelevant movie maker, it is really time for him to end his career. This film felt like a lesson in amateur cinema, there are story telling decisions in this film that have been seen and done 100 times before, but somehow Ridely thought, lets do it 101 times. This film has zero innovation and some of the editing choices are very bad, some scenes drag on needlessly, in an attempt to build drama, but it falls flat ever time. Without spoiling the story, some examples of the amateur story telling is - "don't go there, ok lets go there", "we shouldn't do that, ok lets do that", "don't shoot inside the ship, ok lets shoot inside the ship" There is not much to be positive about with regards to the story telling in this film, after 20 minutes, you know exactly what is going to happen, and the way it has been edited and directed, it feels telegraphed and lazy. The dialogue between characters is poor, very poor, and the connection between the cast is off. I didn't know much about the film going i,n but lets just say, it adds zero to the franchise and doesn't add to Prometheus. Time to hang up the coat Ridley, your ideas are old and so very predictable to a point that I thought this film might be a spoof. Expand

It's not very suspenseful though, and I found that part disappointing. There are also some feminist nods with the 2nd-in-command male seeming awkward, scared, and slightly incapable while the female 3rd-in-command is just immediately confident, has a plan, always knows what to do, bosses people around at-will, etc. They go out of their way to feature women in "stronger" roles, and I feel that takes away slightly from the story -- we lose the sense of humanity and fear from the first two Alien movies with Ripley. On that note, the female co-lead (or whatever her role is) is not very believable. I found the ending to be anti-climactic (just ask yourself why an alien all of a sudden attacks something mechanical versus a human being). To me, this felt like half a movie in that the movie really takes shape around Fassbender's David character. There's a great twist at the end that feels like it should lead to a more satisfying movie, but that's the end. You never feel like the two main survivors are in danger. While this is visually stimulating and attempts to fill holes, I'm left asking why their solution for the mythology of the xenomorph is so simple. Even when it's explained, it doesn't seem that horrifying -- the music is happy which left me feeling very confused. There's gore, but there's really no emotional significance or true fear with everything that happens -- you can see it coming a mile away. The pacing is different than Prometheus, and there's a lot more action, but I found myself only being slightly less bored. There are still holes in the movie. The ending feels rushed. What else can I say? I don't think it's worth seeing in theaters unless you're desperate for a movie to watch. Expand

How does someone who became world renown for his ability to create intelligent entertainment turn his back on previous work and simply phone in his part before cashing a paycheck? Find the answer before you waste a single moment of your life with Alien: Covenant. Imagine being enthralled with the original, inspired by the follow-up and then being let down by each successive installment. If you thought any of those latter variations paled in comparison, this one will truly astound you when you realize Sir Ridley Scott was involved. Sidebar note: I predict the next "Blade Runner" movie will suck balls. What a shame that Neil Bloomkamp's desire to bring back the terrifying version of Alien is seemingly lost now forever. Expand

Apparently audiences are supposed to be swayed by pretty imagery, half-baked philosophy, and allusions to great works of art. Instead of a tense, atmospheric horror film - like the masterful Alien - we get a movie about an android with daddy issues and a god complex. Most of the film revolves around guessing which severely underdeveloped character will die next. I just saw the movie and I'm struggling to remember 90% of the characters' names or personality traits - oh wait, they had no personality traits. So what you are basically seeing is a teenage slasher that is trying to play itself off as a "thinking man's film." It is utterly embarrassing. It would be one thing of the movie was actually scary but it isn't. It is just gross and lots of people die. That is about it. Expand

The complaints that it was too predictable are on point, but my main problems with this film are that it makes the (already confused) cannon and muddles it even more. Not much makes sense, at all, anymore about what is going on with the continuity of this franchise. Add to it that the movie isn't scary, AT ALL and there is little to no character development and this is just a film that never makes you care about who lives and who dies. Ugh.....very disappointed! Not much faith for, what once was, one of my favorite movie franchises of all time, going forward. Alien and Aliens are in the mix of all time meaningful movies ever. Alien 3 wasn't perfect, but it is still good.....all downhill from there, and the interesting questions Prometheus raised were stepped on in Covenant. Expand

Over all the movie felt rushed in places that could have helped build tension and could have delivered larger punches to the audience. The Prometheus connections seem haphazardly thrown in to create a attachment between the two films, and doesn't really answer any of our questions about the Engineers. Though Fassbender does a great job in his role, the ending for his character is predictable and leaves me wanting more mystery. There are a few things the movie does deliver on, and that is the jumps scares and great set design. Although I wish the Xenomorphs were a better mixture of practical and digital effects for the most it was easy to tell they were digital creations, which kept pulling me out of the really high point moments of the movie. It's basically a prequel or a part one of what they believe will be an ongoing development of the Alien universe in film. This story might fly in a graphic novel or comic but not as a film. I paid way too much for far too little. I really feel that Alien Covenant is a bit arrogant and presumptuous. It basically says come pay for all our movies if you ever want to see a xenomorph again. The acting is goodAlien: covenant is not a bad film, but it's not a good film either. It's somewhere in the middle. Visually it is at times stunning but the weak plot holds it back and makes the viewer not care about the action sequences. The acting is good considering they are working with no character development. Apart from Michael Fassbender's character you really don't care for anyone else. When someone dies you often have no idea who they are and what relationship they have to the other characters. The film is basically Prometheus 2. Unfortunately these films are now seen as cannon to the Alien universe so all of the amazing ideas and discussion we had about where the Aliens came from or who the space jockey's are have all been answered; badly. The evolution of the xenomorph is so ridiculous and unbelievable it has ruined any imagination that was applied to the original Alien films. Really we would have been better off without the Covenant and Prometheus. The Alien design is also weak, they just weren't scary. The CGI stands out a mile off, the effects used in Alien and Aliens are far better. I personally still do not see these films as part of the Alien story, to me Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 are the real movies, everything else are spin offs. As a popcorn movie it works. You can tune out and enjoy the visuals and sound and walk away happy but will forget the experience within an hour of leaving the cinema. There;s a few nods to the original film which are cool and there's the occasional memorably tense scene (look out for the Alien hatching from a crew members back while a doctor is locked in a medical room with him). But they are few and far between. There's also a very strange homoerotic scene with Michael Fassbender and Michael Fassbender which is so hilarious that it feels more like it should be in a parody film. Also look out for the scene where Fassbender plays god to a new born alien who mimics his 'creation' stance! It was a real cringe scene. So why have I given if a 6 if I'm so negative about the film? Well I did kind of enjoy it, if it wasn't an Alien film it would be an okay summer sci-fi. It's a visually pleasing date movie. It gives a little smile and entertains as a big dumb Hollywood blockbuster. Expand

I wouldn't trust the crew of the Covenant to run a closing shift at a Wendy's, let alone helm a colonization effort. On top of that, the story picks up where Prometheus left off, keeping a lot of those silly elements in play. Characters muse about the origin of human life, but who cares? I think this movie deserve it and other people need to know and prepare before they will watch it or not (hope not!).
So to make long things short I want to make a citation of Albert Einstein quote:
"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."
Both things - universe & human stupidity present in this movie. It's pity the movie is not about the Universe, not about the diversity it provides, or about the possibilities. This movie does answer no question about everything was asked in Prometheus. It just adds one more layer over those questions with the new ones. That's all. In background stupid people do stupid decisions and die stupidly.
I gave it 3 score only for the following:
1. It's in my favorite franchise - I think there is no better horror idea that Alien Xenomorph by Giger. And Alien is present, even not in final form.
2. Android is great, even with all this gay ****
3. Idea about humans&gods&robots&creators/etc.
That's all folks. I hope next movie won't be such a B-movie.

The buildup is great, but payoff is just *meh* at best. Characters are barely developed, aside from Fassbender's characters which are done rather well. The movie seems to not know what it wants to be: a horror? A Sci-Fi action? Philosophical drama? It's this mishmash that ultimately makes it stutter and never get momentum. It's connection to Prometheus is sloppily done and it feels like a huge section of story is missing. The writing in general feels like a highlight reel from all previous movies in the franchise giving it an inconsistent feel. Effects and cinematography were outstanding. Overall: Alien Covenant just feels out of place and seems too eager to harvest the best aspects of all the movies before it. But this mixture coupled with little character development and a choppy narritive make the movie feel like a disappointment. AC isn't a bad movie, just a disappointing one. Expand

No one has heard our screams (requests) yet

"Alien: Covenant", remake and simultaneously prequel, is the latest entry in the saga of "Alien." The most recent feature film, under the leadership of Ridley Scott, is repulsive and intriguing when it wants but slow, abstruse and tragic when not realize that it is. Despite the fact that it boasts about the progression of the mistakes previously made—factor that to some extent is true, at least visually—, the story of the crew reiterates falling into other vices that impede equating to the sci-fi horror bible as is the original "Alien".

Basing on the usual narrative biotype, Scott—father of the saga— conceives the story on which horrific creatures evolve with a wide list of screenwriters. When you hear the name of more than two scriptwriters in the conception of a work, the reviews mostly tend to be unfavorable; It's really unheard of the project that manages to jell and fit all the ideas in the same plot with satisfaction. Here, Hollywood fixation about stuffing of elements a tale is present in the complete screenplay, more not in the sketch of the traditional story.

The protagonist, a capite ad calcem, is Michael Fassbender, who performs two characters worthy of praise. Fassbender decides to further explore his acting skills under a hard gestural and vocal force by portraying, respectively, androids David and Walter. The first one is a synthetic human model assigned to the crew of the USCSS that served as a guide and the second one is the most brand-new incorporation into "Alien" universe, Walter is the greatest triumph of trial and error in the creation of androids, being the first of a better-forged species than David 6's. Fassbender ratifies why he is one of the best actors of our century, thanks to the roles given by Scott.

In times of "Wonder Woman", Katherine Waterston's aim (Daniels) was neither to conquer nor emulate the original heroic lady interpreted by Sigourney Weaver, her character, always according to her, must be an example of thinking strength of women, of their aptness in any human field, of building hope and faith and a model role for future leaders; to emphasize the attitude of females in a sexist Hollywood, plainly. Her purposes have been fulfilled, but also, they have been notoriously distorted by external expressions. And the new problems come to light. Attenuation of philosophical load, so characteristic of the saga being the promoter of its existence, is restricted to a ten-minute deep prologue where Walter and his creator refute on gods, origins and art matters. Another terrible mistake is the extremely long introduction–more than sixty minutes—to put us in the atmosphere of the characters, more than half of its initial act could be cut. However, the biggest mess is that indicated in the preceding paragraph. In addition to having a prestigious Oscar award by its special effects, in USCSS Nostromo movie the appearance of the aliens is scarce, thus, horror comes out of the tension of the situation, of the alert state that aroused a sudden jump of the alien, even, spaceship interiors produced uncertainty and insecurity, the famous and masterful suspense by which the work is praised. The flaw lies in the decision of Scott about redeeming himself with the short participation of the xenomorph on the screen, he sins due to innocent because although the first aftermath of the lethal virus in the body of a crewmember is frightening, disgusting and surprising, this pace begins to wander, a back and forth between scenes, leaving as the chief source of supposed terror to the alien, fantastically created by CGI, causing a suspense lack in the plot, unfortunately, affecting in the prediction of the final cliffhanger, however, concerning this, it leaves a feeling of wanting far more, blessed Walter!

Independent of the flaws of "Prometheus", "Alien: Covenant" amend some of the issues of the previous installments, however, adds many others placing the film in a limbo, in a loop. This movie fails to be classified under horror genre—despite its delectable gore— rather, it's an audio-visual sci-fi production that raises questions that no one requested and, in the end, doesn't respond the already proposed ones. Having as a measure of the quality Scott's previous films," Covenant "is far from being like the original movie, however, the way of introducing, artistically, the questionable story is fascinating, a paradise where they won't hear your screams, although, we're doing it. "The Path to Paradise begins in Hell", right now, we're going to the real hell, in all the extension and effect of the word.

Although not as strong as Alien or Aliens, Alien:covenant was suspenseful enough to make me concentrate through out the whole film. I would say it is third best of the Alien series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Much like Prometheus - there simply would not be a film if the main cast showed some intelligence. As soon as the decision was made to land on an unknown, unstudied planet, I lost any investment in the film, as I knew that logic would be thrown out of the window whenever the plot needed advancing, (ironically, Daniels even points out how ridiculous the idea was). A predictable, yet head-scratching installment. Alien has, in my opinion, come to be a very abused and mishandled franchise. I will however admit, that the idea of a crazy robot flying through space conducting horrific experiments on 2000 unsuspecting colonists is a brilliant. Expand

Alien: Covenant is not very entertaining and basically a lower quality reboot of Prometheus. Prometheus had higher production value, better actors and characters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I will say that "I loved Prometheus". If you didn't, than my review will do you no service.

Now I loved Alien and Aliens as well. All other titles tied to the Alien franchise have been ok, but not great. With Prometheus, I enjoyed Scott's effort to take the story in a new direction, tackling bigger questions about the creation of humanity, why our gods left us, and ultimately discovering that they in fact wanted to destroy us...their own creation. The hero, Dr. Shaw, spearheaded the spirit of the movie, angry at the Engineers at the end and yelling "why do you hate us?" Leaving us with a huge cliffhanger, Shaw and David are able to fly the Engineer's ship with a set course to their home-world. WOW! Now that's exciting! I watched this movie 4 times. I tried to imagine what the first encounter would be like. I was excited to learn if they would be instantly hostile, or would they attempt to communicate. What answers could they extract from our creators? Even though David wasn't completely trustworthy, I was interested to see how Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and David would get along, as she patched him up and showed mercy...essentially she saved him, and together they were going to unlock humanities' biggest secrets.

BUT NOPE!!! I was forced to try and forget about ALL of that. Even though I knew Covenant was going to be focused on a whole new crew, I was encouraged by the YouTube promos as we saw David and Dr. Shaw together, conversing, as he safely wakes her from her long journey. I now realize that was solely an attempt to grab my attention and wallet day one before I found out that it was all misleading. The promos even used James Franco to draw, which convinced my wife to join me to watch the movie, and both our jaws dropped as he gets fried in his stasis pod before ever speaking a single word.

Instead of taking me to a destination Prometheus seemed to promise we were headed, I landed in a place all too familiar. Another mostly generic Alien horror movie. The plot is, crew follows signal to unknown planet, gets killed by Aliens except a few lucky people escape. And because it's an Alien move, you can already guess that one will be a kick-ass female.

So here is the thing, let's forget Prometheus ever happened, because it is now MOSTLY unimportant and only serves as a reason for the paranoid android to end up on this planet. FINE, I'm over it. Just give me a good Alien movie and I'll be happy enough.

NOPE! Denied again! The unbelievable amount of predictability in the movie, compounded by the absolutely stunning stupidity of the crew and their decisions, depriving the film of any connection to realism ruins the science fiction. There are too many problems to list, but I will mention a few of my favorites that caused me to groan and roll my eyes:

1) Perform no eval of the planet. Just drop a ship and lets see what happens. And leave some teammates alone along the way to "set-up shop" even though they were essentially a scouting team sent to investigate a signal. No problem there.

2) A contamination suit on an Alien planet? NAH! Who needs that? Even breathable air was not examined in the movie prior to them jumping off the ship with now helmets. When that happened, I had to tell myself "ok, perhaps they just want us to assume that they tested the air quality of course...why film a scene to prove it?" How about being cautious of airborne contaminants, just to be on the safe side?

3) Two exact replica androids (one evil, one not) get in a fight, one comes back alive with the same clothing and missing hand as the good one...but MAYBE you still may want to do a little questioning since it's a super-intelligent android that doesn't feel pain? Oh, that's right, the bad-ass female hero thought of that as soon as she gets locked into her stasis chamber right at the end. Damn...I could see you were a little suspicious...bad timing on your part girlfriend!

4) The "red-shirts" were all WAY too obvious. To the point that they may as well have been wearing red shirts (if you don't get reference...basically, people who will obviously die). So many pointless characters who received ZERO character building. There was no weight to any of their deaths.

I could go on. David's logic for performing his atrocities were so far fetched and illogical. The Engineers who one would assume are light years more advanced just watched as their ship returned and dropped their own super weapon on top of their heads. Hr Giger's art design that helped establish the Alien franchise is pretty much nowhere to be seen.

This movie was a spit in the face to Prometheus and a lousy attempt to cash in on the Alien formula. I was told, apparently, that Ridley Scott changed his vision after people **** about Prometheus not having enough brainless blood and gore, and couldn't grasp the bigger questions and appeal in that movie. If that's true, than shame on the haters and shame on Ridley for listening to them. RENT THIS

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll give you my opinion filled with spoilers of course, and sorry for my poor English. I liked: mostly the first part, the gorgeous shots of the covenant with it sails fully open and the arrival to the planet. The relationship walter/david and what it implied more than what they showed. What I didn't like and this is the long part: the many mistakes made by the crew and the silly security decisions. Starting with arriving to a planet with unknown biosphere (bacteria and viruses you don know) without at least hazmat suits, that would be difficult for the plot to evolve since the first contagion is via air, but that is exactly why you always wear your spacesuit! Same plot holes from Prometheus, scientist not acting scientifically. After that they arrive to a new civilization and they act like if something they see every day, no awe or anything, the one more mesmerized seems to be Walter. And from there my suspension of disbelief totally disappeared. A Tennessee that allows the covenant to get closer to the ground risking the whole mission as if it was a common expedition. The quick way the show what happened at the arrival of David and how little we still know about the engineers. The stupid way David lures the captain into watching the egg and how quickly the xenomorph evolves from a small being into a huge one in a few minutes and with out eating... And the ending, how is it that David is authorized to have any type of interaction with MUTHUR and why MUTHUR doesn't react to him being on the ship as she reacts to a unknown life on board... I could say way more but I probably already bored you. I think is a 6/10 a lost opportunity, they tried to blend alien, aliens and Prometheus and do a lot of fan service in one movie and didn't work for me. Is not a bad movie but is not what I expected, liked Prometheus way better. Expand

This Movie may be the WORST of the series, it is at least tied with alien 3 for that. Poor writing, uninteresting characters, a stupid plot & over reliance CG sequences. This movie was a major disappointment to me as a fan of the series.
