Prometheus, to me, was a good movie, but I think that Alien:Covenant is the better one by a small margin. The movie sets a great atmosphere, characters are great, although I do wonder why James Franco and Danny McBride are in the movie. They seem off; maybe because I'm not used to seeing them in non-comedic roles. I do like to add, however, that Danny McBride caught me off guard here. He did well, in my opinion. The atmosphere and the overall "vibe" of the movie was good; the soundtrack is a little off at times. Visuals were amazing, and the CGI was top notch. There were parts that were dragging, but not so much that it took away from the entire experience of the movie. The ending ruined the movie for me. It was so unoriginal, and predictable. But, you be the judge. I gave this movie an 8/10 because I really did enjoy the movie, with little hiccups here and there but nothing detrimental to the movie itself. Bravo! Expand

I really enjoyed this one, but I can really feel the gap between Prometheus and Covenant. All I can hope for is that the interquel will go into the meat and potatoes of the prequel trilogy. Don't stop making Alien films Ridley!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoilers: Just an Amazing film, i don't normally like horror films but love the Alien Franchise. it was full of twists and turns, and some of the best scenes just send shivers down my spine... Literally. there is a load of lore in this film and some of it needs you to piece it together as it goes along. one of the parts where one of the most significant forms of the Xenomorph, The Facehugger hugs one of the crews face while another tries to free it off him and succeeds but at the cost of some acid burnt skin and his own life as one of the main Xenomorphs prey's from above, the guy with the acid burnt skin runs of and survives... this scene just had me in a paranoid state through the rest of film thinking did the Facehugger lay the egg, or was it unsuccessful... it was the first as it took longer burst out later in the film. David (the original from Prometheus) returns as he was stranded on the home world of the "Engineers" which Shaw and David pursue at the end of Prometheus which Shaw "Died" on impact with the world. now one part (SPOILER if You didn't read before... idiots), Walter (new David) is fighting the old David because David was obsessed with creation and experimentation with the Xenomorphs studying them with the numerous subspecies. David was the reason Shaw died, and when everything was going Walter's way during the fight with him being better, it cuts black... now this is when everything goes out of hand, David stabs and kills Walter successfully unlike before, takes Walter clothes and portrays him making Shaw and the rest think its Walter when its not. That's how the ending happens, Daniels finds out when she starts to go into cryosleep, which now that David is running the ship Covenant, he puts 2 facehugger embryo's into the freezer and that's when it ends. now that makes me excited for the 3rd film. Prometheus was great and so was this film. sorry for pointing out the obvious but its for the people who don't know what happened at those parts for the delusional. worth the see and the gore makes it better on the way the necromorphs evolve and how the original Big Chap is formed. Then Alien covenant is going to get you %85 there. Get ready to experience confusing feelings about the beginning of humanities extinction, like the time you drank non alcoholic beer for the first time and you realized you never like the taste but just drank to bury your non existing self confidence down. Feel like you broke your jaw with a jaw breaker from the amazing cg effects has to offer and leave the theater with a speech impediment that'll leave you single for the rest of your life only to be reminded of your depressing life every time you watch this movie. Never will you doubt agent Fox (x-files) for screaming aliens in the sky instead leave your family and friends to build a bunker at your parents house cuz your girlfriend kicked you out for having ptsd from this movie. This plot will have you feeling like your term for hope really went out the window. (specially if your name is "hope") With twists and turns and some few plot holes that make you feel your driving down your parents dirt rode while getting head. (asking yourself, why am I not driving on a solid rode for this and I cant stop now cuz it feels amazing.) With a great cast that falls into the stereotypical cast of horror that we all love. Emerge yourself in a planet that looks like earth and abandon because production spend a ton a money on advertising this movies hype so now you look at the exact almost look a like planet from the movie "Prometheus" and begin to wonder "wow... every planet looks the **** same" Alien: Covenant will make you feel like you've watched "nightmare on elm street 5" all over again, but know that media has you hooked cuz you cant watch anything else but the same movie but this time before everything has happened. Let me start off by saying I liked both Prometheus and the first two films in the Alien series. I thought Ridley Scott to take what worked in each of those films to create a perfect blend of new and old concepts.

Scott is known for his gorgeously shot movies that sometimes lack the content to back up the rest of the film. I did not think this was the case for Alien Covenant and felt it was one of his more complete films. The movie did have some familiar horror movie tropes but for the most part nothing felt forced. The highlight for me was the performance by Michael Fassbender. The movie contained some of the best scenes I have by him as he had the perfect opportunities to show his range. One of the best Sci Fi Horror movies I have seen in a while, I recommend to all fans of genre or Prometheus and the original Alien movies.

I went into the theater expecting expecting a dud like every entry into this franchise since 1986 but walked away pleasantly surprised. The acting was superb. Michael Fassbender, Danny McBride and Katherine Waterston all delivered excellent performances. Waterston recaptured some of Sigourney Weaver's magic as a strong but believable female lead. As expected with Scott, the visuals were stunning. The atmosphere was tense. The pacing felt just right.

It wasn't a groundbreaking film. It didn't add anything particularly new. Either did Star Wars: The Force Awakens but it was enjoyable enough. Like Episode VII, the scenes that are most familiar felt more like an homage to the past than a franchise struggling to find new things to do.

If you're a long time Alien fan and stuck with the franchise through Alien 3, Alien: Resurrection, the two AVP films and Prometheus I doubt you'll be missing this film despite the mixed reception. If you're unsure I suggest you go. It's worth the price of admission, in my opinion at least.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you want to enjoy this movie, do yourself a favor: realize it is not an Alien movie. It is Prometheus 2. Like 100%, without a doubt, Prometheus 2. There is actually very little of the traditional "Alien" in this movie that people are expecting, and I think that's why a lot of people are reacting very negatively.

I'm guessing there were Marketing and Studio reasons to call it Alien, which screws up expectations. Marketing is screwing up the reception of the film by making people think it's something else entirely. As Prometheus 2 I really liked it. .

I think it's actually really cool how it all weaves together. The problem is people think Ridley was playing fast and loose with how the Alien ecology works - but he wasn't...90% of what we saw happening with the spores and weird looking aliens was Davids **** up creations using the "highly malleable" pathogen running amok. The alien that came out of the captain near the end was the first "true" alien born.

Sure there were some silly things like the guy getting impregnated THAT fast etc, but most of these movies have things like that (like the idiot biologist snake-charmer in Prometheus 1). That's why I give it an 8. Big mistake calling it Alien imo.

Fassbender is in top form, The film is highly-ambitious as it successfully blends the philosophical leanings of its predecessor Prometheus and its more action/horror oriented suspense and gore of its sequels Alien/Aliens. The sixth Alien movie doesn't disappoint. Alien: Covenant is loaded with the tense action sequences and visceral gross-out moments that we have learned to love from this franchise. The thoughtful, world-building storyline delivers new and interesting heights for the series. Alien: Covenant should have no trouble appealing to new audiences while also pleasing long-time fans. Its one fault is in taking a few minutes too long to get things going in the beginning. At the risk of sounding jaded: in 2017, we have seen the fancy spaceship effects and hyper-sleep stuff before. Skip it and the movie would have benefit, much like this years "Life" did. Overall, Alien: Covenant shouldn't be missed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who grew up with a pretty dark childhood, horror movies hold a special place in my heart. At an early age, they put a face to the horrors I experienced. The original Alien movies were, and still are a personal favorite of mine. And before you ask, yes, even Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection are included. While I was not a huge fan of Prometheus (I sat there for its entire run-time waiting for the millisecond the alien was present post credits), I was ecstatic to hear that its sequel (and prequel to the original Alien movies) was going to put the Xenomorph, or a version of it, at the forefront.

The film opens with David having a conversation with his “father”, Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) about his birth and place in the world. David (Michael Fassbender) appears to be suffering from the same daddy issues that were prevalent in Prometheus. After some pouting about how he will never be able to create offspring due to being a synthetic, we are introduced to the Covenant and its crew.

The Covenant is transporting a few thousand colonists to a new home world for a fresh start. After a rouge meteor strikes the ship and kills some colonists and the ships captain, Branson (James Franco), the 2nd in command Oram (Billy Crudup) takes over. As soon as he does, a strange distress signal consisting of garbled music by the great John Denver from a nearby planet is picked up by the ship. The writers chose to touch on the captain’s religious faith, which is never really explored, but I believe this hints to a faith that believe that God came from space and eventually came to worship the Aliens in Dark Horse Comic’s Aliens vs. Predator comic series. Contrary to the some of the teams’ advice, Oram chooses to visit the planet to evaluate it for possible human inhabitants or colonization.

Once on the planet, members of the team start becoming ill from small spores and stuff hits the fan. I found it funny that just minutes after being on an uncharted planet with no living creatures to be seen, they take their helmets off and breathe the unknown atmosphere. After an initial confrontation with the Xenomorphs, they are saved by David, whom has crash landed on this planet after the events of Prometheus.

The remainder of the film showcases the struggles of the team on the planet and the lack of communication between the remaining members of the crew hovering in space above the planet. While it’s an enjoyable film, once the alien is added to the story, it suffers from some pretty major pacing issues. The true horror of the situation doesn’t begin until the last 30-40 minutes of the film, but when it finally hits, it doesn’t let up.

Technically, director Ridley Scott offers some amazing special effects, both practical and CGI. My major complaint with the film is, much like Prometheus before it, the technology featured in the film is far more advanced than that in the original Alien films that take place after this. While not overly distracting from this film, it does make you go ask why. Additionally, the insight into the creation or evolution of the Xenomorph is never fully explored. What’s left is more questions, and even less answers as to how they evolved from what we saw in Prometheus to the Alien shown in the older films that followed this. In my humble opinion, this film would have served better as part of a new trilogy in the Alien franchise, which would have explained the technological advancements as well as left room for the evolution of the creatures. The fact that the aliens at the beginning of the film emerge from the host fully developed without the use of eggs, looking more like a cat than a snake, seems that the creatures de-evolved into the Xenomorph we all know and love.

The cast put forth believable performances, with Michael Fassbender (pulling double duty as 2 synthetics) and Danny McBride being standouts. I was concerned with the casting of McBride due to his previous roles primarily being comedic, but he was a pleasant surprise. The real stars of the movie, the Xenomorphs, look as terrifying as ever and if anything, deserved more screen time than they received.

While not a perfect film, Alien Covenant is a welcome addition to the Alien franchise. Despite its shortcomings, it is an entertaining experience. With its surprise twist ending, I can only hope that Ridley Scott’s inevitable follow up offers more answers and resolves some of the prequel’s many plot holes.

I'm of two minds on this one, much like Ridley Scott seems to have been. He wanted to continue the origin story he started with Prometheus, continue to explore what the search for answers entails and the mysteries it has over us. But he also knew that this time around, he had to deliver the Alien goodness or audiences would get all pissy again and wouldn't understand the point of it all and blah blah blah (it wasn't called Alien: Prometheus for a reason).

So here we have a typical Alien type movie setup with a big spaceship and slumberers awakening from their cryo comas too early and then exploring some desolate planet where of course the **** hits all kinds of fan. Things gestate, parts burst, there's blood and violence. But the thing is, Scott's heart doesn't seem to be in these scenes. They almost feel as if they've been directed by someone else (perhaps Luke Scott, his son, the 2nd unit director)? They're almost mindless in their CGI flash-cut matter of factness (is there anything worse than CGI Xenomorph?). Nothing surprising or engaging or even remotely resembling the kind of terror on display in the original Alien - just flashiness and shininess and fastness.

But then there's this other movie all mixed up in it that's a more direct sequel in line with what Scott was doing in Prometheus. It involves David holed up on this world creating life, studying life, becoming a God. There's strange architecture from the Engineers (indelible), philosophizing and eroticism and genuine intrigue and mystery. It's about the creation of horror by a rejected and alienated creation trying to discover its place in the universe (turtles all the way down) and it's far more interesting than the generic space creature movie that keeps popping up.

It was a valiant attempt to blend the two but it doesn't work because you get the feeling this wasn't meant to be an Alien movie in the first place (we already have that/those) and Scott didn't really want to do that. But Scott is nothing if not smart about his business decisions - Fox funded it and audiences were interested again at first, more so than they would have been if it were Prometheus 2 - and he got to at least make part of a movie he was interested in. Let's hope for a third, one that audiences can engage with on its own terms.

A group of space explorers land on a remote planet where lives "guess who?" There are some electric encounters that seem more intense and extended that in the past, but there are also plenty of concentrated dialogue passages (and more emotion). Since the scenario's a given, it's up to the filmmakers to offer something new. They didn't. But this film still plays out with grand visuals and a sprinkling of violent, tense alien encounters. Good robot! Bad robot!

After some gaps, the 'Alien' franchise came alive with the prequel 'Prometheum' which originally said to be a spin-off. Particularly, it landed in the hands of the original maker. Now, even the original title back in action. It's another prequel, hence the prequel series on the making. The next film too will be the same kind, before the overall storyline in the franchise align in a straight line.

I enjoyed it. But not as good as 'Prometheum' or the first two 'Alien' films. The issue with it was, the same old cliché. There's nothing in the story. It was like any space film that's set in a similar fashion. The 80 per cent of the film was what we had seen in the earlier 'Alien' films. Just altered scenes with a new cast and a great visuals. So the update makes it the special.

The story focused too much on the robot. The alien parts were reduced. Because it was like the first appearance of the original aliens we saw in the old films. Precisely to say, the origins. Genetic modification, crossbreeding, there comes the beast. From this film what I have learnt was, it was nothing but more or less the same old fear the humans have about that the robots which are the ones going to make humans go extinct. Except here the aliens come between them. Hence, falling prey to the same clichéd theme from any sci-fi that had humanoid.

Nevertheless, well maintained film in its balance coming from previous hits in the series and going forward to bring more hits. This flick would serve as a fine bridge between them. So only 18 years to go between this, from 2104 to 2122. I'm already anticipating the next film. As I have heard, that film would be focused more on the robot. That's going to be a different experience. Fassbender's time to have some space adventures.

Beaufiful cinematography. The actors are all good although in this occasion the absolute star is Michael Fassbender (David). Surprising stuff we get to see from that character. Overall I would have prefered to see a full sequel to Prometheus, but this is rewarding enough for the people who wanted answers since that entry. The film gives us plenty. Recommendable ofr lovers of teh franchise no doubt. I missed Noomi Rapace though since I loved her in Prometheus. Expand

I really disliked the IMAX version, which was very “in your face” and distracting. (My reaction was similar to the many coming attractions of other “action” films I saw before the main film started. I have seen many other films in IMAX – for example, Doctor Strange – and liked them.) Perhaps Ridley Scott doesn’t “get” IMAX. Regardless, my reaction went from a charitable 5 rating to an enthusiastic 7, but the irritating characters (like Tennessee) and the Walter-David confusion didn’t help my enjoyment the second time. I understand intellectually that we needed characters who were so attracted to each other that they could spend the rest of their lives together as colonists, but the disgruntled misfits in the first Alien film were more fun than these lovey-doveys. But generally the latest film was interesting and, and as a fan who has seen the other films in the series innumerable times, I enjoyed it. But the atmosphere of mystery and dread in the first Alien film and in Prometheus was much more fun and worked much better than the goings-on in this film. Expand

I don't understand people that just can't chill out and enjoy the movie. It's true, not every character desition it's a logical one, but we know that as spectators, not "feeling" the tension that a person would have in the movie's horrible situations.

The acting was great, the horrors were truly horrific, the overall story it's on point and the whole atmosphere of the planet it's truly obscure. It's really Alien gone gothic. It's simply a better and more balanced movie than Prometheus. All the ideas here fit well and have enough time. The universe they have created can produce so much fun for us now!

If there is one thing that I objectively think could have done better it's the ending. It's obvious, but it's intentionally obvious. The direction could have been made in a way the plot twist was more unexpected. Nonetheless, the overall idea of it is truly masterful and it's a good ending, it just could be better executed.

Fassbender shines here acting as two robots, how paradojical is that?

I would recommend it any day, just watch it without children.

It happens to Prometheus as well. Alien (1979) shines not only in lead characters but also the crews. Covenant is weaker in the portrayal of the heroine compare to Prometheus, but thanks to Michael Fassbender (once again) great acting able to strengthen her as a character. Story wise, it all very much alike to Prometheus in a good way. I personally think that any fans or casual movie goers should definitely give this one a try. No one has heard our screams (requests) yet

"Alien: Covenant", remake and simultaneously prequel, is the latest entry in the saga of "Alien." The most recent feature film, under the leadership of Ridley Scott, is repulsive and intriguing when it wants but slow, abstruse and tragic when not realize that it is. Despite the fact that it boasts about the progression of the mistakes previously made—factor that to some extent is true, at least visually—, the story of the crew reiterates falling into other vices that impede equating to the sci-fi horror bible as is the original "Alien".

Basing on the usual narrative biotype, Scott—father of the saga— conceives the story on which horrific creatures evolve with a wide list of screenwriters. When you hear the name of more than two scriptwriters in the conception of a work, the reviews mostly tend to be unfavorable; It's really unheard of the project that manages to jell and fit all the ideas in the same plot with satisfaction. Here, Hollywood fixation about stuffing of elements a tale is present in the complete screenplay, more not in the sketch of the traditional story.

The protagonist, a capite ad calcem, is Michael Fassbender, who performs two characters worthy of praise. Fassbender decides to further explore his acting skills under a hard gestural and vocal force by portraying, respectively, androids David and Walter. The first one is a synthetic human model assigned to the crew of the USCSS that served as a guide and the second one is the most brand-new incorporation into "Alien" universe, Walter is the greatest triumph of trial and error in the creation of androids, being the first of a better-forged species than David 6's. Fassbender ratifies why he is one of the best actors of our century, thanks to the roles given by Scott.

In times of "Wonder Woman", Katherine Waterston's aim (Daniels) was neither to conquer nor emulate the original heroic lady interpreted by Sigourney Weaver, her character, always according to her, must be an example of thinking strength of women, of their aptness in any human field, of building hope and faith and a model role for future leaders; to emphasize the attitude of females in a sexist Hollywood, plainly. Her purposes have been fulfilled, but also, they have been notoriously distorted by external expressions. And the new problems come to light. Attenuation of philosophical load, so characteristic of the saga being the promoter of its existence, is restricted to a ten-minute deep prologue where Walter and his creator refute on gods, origins and art matters. Another terrible mistake is the extremely long introduction–more than sixty minutes—to put us in the atmosphere of the characters, more than half of its initial act could be cut. However, the biggest mess is that indicated in the preceding paragraph. In addition to having a prestigious Oscar award by its special effects, in USCSS Nostromo movie the appearance of the aliens is scarce, thus, horror comes out of the tension of the situation, of the alert state that aroused a sudden jump of the alien, even, spaceship interiors produced uncertainty and insecurity, the famous and masterful suspense by which the work is praised. The flaw lies in the decision of Scott about redeeming himself with the short participation of the xenomorph on the screen, he sins due to innocent because although the first aftermath of the lethal virus in the body of a crewmember is frightening, disgusting and surprising, this pace begins to wander, a back and forth between scenes, leaving as the chief source of supposed terror to the alien, fantastically created by CGI, causing a suspense lack in the plot, unfortunately, affecting in the prediction of the final cliffhanger, however, concerning this, it leaves a feeling of wanting far more, blessed Walter!

Independent of the flaws of "Prometheus", "Alien: Covenant" amend some of the issues of the previous installments, however, adds many others placing the film in a limbo, in a loop. This movie fails to be classified under horror genre—despite its delectable gore— rather, it's an audio-visual sci-fi production that raises questions that no one requested and, in the end, doesn't respond the already proposed ones. Having as a measure of the quality Scott's previous films," Covenant "is far from being like the original movie, however, the way of introducing, artistically, the questionable story is fascinating, a paradise where they won't hear your screams, although, we're doing it. "The Path to Paradise begins in Hell", right now, we're going to the real hell, in all the extension and effect of the word.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The sequel to Prometheus opens with a flashback when Weyland succeeded
created a replicant named David. This David that accompanied Weyland to
search the greatest mystery of human kind. At the end of the Prometheus
Elizabeth Shaw is the only survivor along with David that she saved.
many years later, a colony spaceship - Covenant - sent to search an
alternative planet for human kind - along with a replicant crew named
Walter but then an accident caused life casualties include Cap.Jacob
Branson (James Franco) and some colony. The leadership falls to Oram
(Billy Crudup) to lead them all to the paradise planet without give any
chance for the crew to mourn and shows no empathy for Daniels (the
widow). When they catch signal from a hidden planet, Oram decided to
change course - with the official objection from Daniels as the second
highest officer. And so they landed, but still Daniels still feel
uncomfortable for this green planet hide something mysterious. So, Oram
brings his exploration team along to explore and to find the source of
the signal monitored by Upworth,Ricks & Tennesse from the outer.
So,then two of the member secretly infected by pathogen and less then
half hour, they real nightmare begins. In the middle of chaos, David
the revealed to safe them...are they really save? I was a fan of Alien
movies (Only Alien 1979 and Aliens 1986 - the rest Alien?Trash!!!).
Ridley brings out this Alien dark sci fi saga alive back from the very
beginning starts with Prometheus where at the end of the movie there
are only 1 human survivor, Dr.Shaw and she saved David too. In this
sequel to Prometheus, the screenplay put more emotion between main
characters and more of scary horrifying form of aliens such as deadly
pathogen that can turn DNA of the host in less then 1 hour and breeds
new life form from inside it's host body. I really love this new kind
of horrifying alien form, and how Alien:Covenant build the characters
that supposed to be very competent but then easily torn aparts and
treacherous. And Ridley successfully drag audience to follow all the
way to finally acquainted with the alien that the first time Ridley
brought to screen in 1979 (xenomorph) that David called so as the
perfect creation. But, somehow i think that the parasite pathogen that
scattered everywhere in that green horror planet is more scary and more
efficient to breed vicious alien,. And by the way why the rest of the
crews not showing any surprise that they just saved by a person that
looks exactly as Walter? And there is not even conversation between
them and David where he's came from...the connection between him and
the spaceship. But i impressed the landscape shot on the green
mysterious planet..and how perfectly Daniels express her wonder that
they hear not a sound of birds or animal. If this planet has everything
that all living creatures on earth need to start a new beginning...if
this planet is a paradise..why they see nothing but just a sound of
waterfall from afar. What i actually feel about this sequel is that
Ridley bring this Alien saga into a new whole dimension of sci fi
horror...that still left questions unanswered...even since the
Prometheus..why? the big giant bald pale skin hated human?that is a big
question that still running around in my head. And Fasbender
successfully performed as 2 replicant characters at the same time the
sympathetic Walter and the psychopath genius David (psychopath? David
is a robot for haven sake...no words can describe this). Finally, this... Ridley really escalate his Alien saga not just into a deeper and darker alien movie but a step closer bringing Alien as a new legend in the film making history.

"Alien: Covenant" falls within the latter two. It's not as mind-blowing as the original, not as much of a rocket ride as "Aliens," but it's no "Alien 3" or "Prometheus." Anyone who has seen any of the previous movies will be entertained but not awed, as there's really nothing new here. Anyone who actually appreciated "Prometheus" will see this as a fairly seamless transition to a faster-paced sequel. For me, this was like going on your favorite amusement park ride for the 100th time. You might still enjoy it, but it doesn't have that same joy or jolt of excitement you felt the first time you sat in the chair and buckled yourself in. The story line is almost a rewrite of the original "Alien," down to the "Let's try to kill the monster this way" ending. The characters are cookie-cutter; you have a Sigourney Weaver clone (the human Sigourney from "Alien," not the superhero of the later flicks), a number of other likeable but gone-too-soon folks, the unexpected stranger, etc. My biggest negative is with the movie's predictability. I figured out the "twist" about 40 minutes in, and hoped I would be wrong. No such luck.

A person sitting near me complained that the movie should have focused more on the race introduced in "Prometheus." That's probably where the next movie (and you know they'll figure out how to do another one) is headed.

Overall, I give this movie a B for entertainment value, a C for storyline, and a C+ for execution. It's not worth a full-priced admission, but it's good as a bonus picture with a Dish Network, DirecTV, Amazon or Netflix account. It's not a wasted day, but it's not one worth being at the top of your To Do list.

However, this does not detract from a largely more suspenseful and dark film compared to its predecessor, Prometheus. Ridley Scott handles this film with enough precision that the stories and philosophical ideas (however convoluted they may be) are treated well in the context of the over-arching plot. Though the attempts, or rather the execution of these thought-provoking ideas into the film could've been done much better. With some worthwhile action and terrorizing aliens, the blockbuster aspect of the film is done very well. And though the plot does become slightly rushed towards the end and somewhat predictable, it is still a very solid movie and a film definitely worth watching. Expand

Some secrets have to remain secret. A stranger was many years in the aura of mystery, and we thought "how the hell did they come from?" — it's interesting. But Ridley Scott decided to make a series of prequels, and why not. To disclose the Foreign origin must be the one who this whole mess started. The problem is that Ridley Scott, the director, and the prequels need a great script, but it is not. "Prometheus" was a pretty fantastic movie and had almost no connection with the movie "Alien" and "Alien:Covenant" is its continuation. However, almost no connection with "Prometheus" has, except of the Android David, we don't even show the monster from the end of "Prometheus". But "Alien: Covenant" is already directly linked to the movie "Alien" and reveals to us the mystery of the origin of these deadly monsters. The problem with this film, like "Prometheus" script. He is absolutely useless. If the reason why the colonists landed on an uncharted planet can understand (though it is close and the atmosphere is right), but the fact that they landed on this planet without space suits can not be forgiven. If the colonists were to them, the film simply would not have been, nobody would have been infected, and all was well (before I met David, of course). The colonists not just dumb, they have intelligence left in a minus, besides, they cannot be called professionals in their field. The colonists very much, you are one of them remember, except for the main character and that guy in the hat, but names you don't remember, remember only their images. The characters are many and they are not disclosed. Fortunately, they die quickly, and almost all do it's pretty cool. The only interesting and compelling characters is the Android David and Walter, who brilliantly played by Michael Fassbender. David is wonderful, he is cunning, treacherous, and otherwise mocking stupid people. He is the best antagonist in the universe "Alien". The film looks great! All kinds are absolutely gorgeous. Ridley Scott is a true master of his craft, for the Director's work can not complain about, everything looks nice and cool. Scenes of fights, staging, scenery — everything is fine. The monsters look scary, and very dangerous. The film breaks into silly scenes (like the landing of the colonists without a spacesuit), and stunning (as the appearance Nepomorpha from the back). The Director pulls this film, because the script is stupid, the characters often do not behave logically, you don't can understand things not because of their stupidity, but because of the scenario of stocks. Although it is possible that "Alien: COVENANT" as "Prometheus" was mercilessly cut, so you need to wait for the uncut version. People are stupid in this film, Yes, but they behave like people. No need to find fault with their behavior in a stressful situation, they are clearly not ready for this was. The human factor makes itself known, and you already see on the screen are not actors, but real people, because they live and behave as people. The film is full of biblical references, there are references to "Hamlet", is the talk about Wagner and others, and I think this is unnecessary in this film. Movies "Alien" should be about survival, about the unknown monsters, but we got a movie about Android and his menagerie. Fear almost no sense that the heroes survive too. The film is just stuck in all sorts of references and almost tried to scare the viewer. This film is about David, not about other people and other monsters, the story of Android, imagines himself a God. Don't get me wrong, it's good, even great, but not for a movie about aliens. I have the feeling that Ridley Scott is sometimes confused scenario of this film and "Blade Runner". References to "Hamlet", the Bible is good, but we didn't go to this movie. Although the monsters are encouraging. They are deadly, smart, and now we know their origin. "Alien:Covenant" is already associated with the movie "Alien", it's beautiful, entertaining, sometimes trying to scare. It is not just a beautiful fantasy film like "Prometheus", it's about our favorite Xenomorph. But it spoils a scenario in which a feeling that just with white thread tied these poor Alien. The film is not great, but not terrible, he is just average. I left the cinema without emotion. The film didn't scare me, not pleased, but not upset, he brings a lot of new information to the history of Others, besides he filmed great, the monsters look cool. A better film "Prometheus", and perhaps the best movie about aliens from the time of the third part. Looking forward to the next movie, but for a miracle do not hope. Expand

The main concern is the continued convolution of the mythology, but it is fairly balanced with heart-stopping, horrific tension and gut-wrenching gore. These two movies establish a definite, if not slightly-unstable, basis for the (allegedly) two new prequel movies that will bridge the gap between the polarizing Prometheus and highly-praised Alien. Although the stunning cinematography does not waver throughout the movie, the special effects are slightly questionable in aspects of the movie less renowned (chest-burster especially). In summation, Covenant takes the raw story of Prometheus and enhances it for the delight of die-hard fans of the original in a way that will please only the attentive and educated. Its exploration of morality and hierarchy of creation is interesting, thought-provoking, and adds a deeper meaning to the movie underneath its preliminary horror-thriller-action combo, although some would argue its execution is shaky and a major contributing factor to the confusion. Although there aren't shocking revelations in the film, this "Alien" prequel does deliver some brilliantly-crafted sci-fi horror, as well as quite a bit of intrigue into the Prometheus/Alien universe.

Better than the first prequel and it does make the first one a little better. Overall I like the back story in the creation on the alien, some of the execution in the movie lacks tho.

I'd say it's one of the weaker cast lists of the franchise, not that I have anything against the performances here but I wasn't blown away or overly interested in anyone in this 2017 production. Michael Fassbender is the obvious standout from an acting viewpoint, though I don't really dig his character all that much to be honest. The rest are a bit forgettable.

You can tell it's well made and it does look the part, with it being worth the watch to complete the franchise and all that. Of the sixth films, though, it'd be in my personal bottom two (*excl. short films) - in fairness, that isn't as bad as it sounds, it's just the series has seen better.

Depicting a manned mission to space to find where we came from, the film marked Scott's return to the Alien franchise and was a wildly imaginative and gorgeously designed science fiction film. It unlocked secrets in a magical world of mystery, all while delivering the roots of the xenomorphs that have come to define the franchise. However, its dumb character actions have led many to write it off as trash. Obviously, I disagree, but the complaint is fair. Alien: Covenant marks yet another divisive return to the beloved franchise for Scott and it certainly could wind up being remembered as even more divisive than its predecessor. Recently, Scott has had a nasty issue of not answering questions. Prometheus, as the beginning of a new prequel trilogy, is obviously loaded with open questions. Now, Covenant is planned to be the final sequential film in the trilogy and, yet, it leaves open questions in the name of having its prequel (and Prometheus' sequel) answer those questions. While this film works for the most part, Ridley Scott really needs to not do this. For its faults, Rogue One got this perfectly with a prequel that answered questions from the original and then just led right up to its beginning. Compared to that one, Covenant is certainly not nearly as fulfilling. This, and Prometheus, are intended to be prequels to the originals, but seem wholly different and not related at all, even if they feature the same beasts. There is a disconnect and, as a result, they are best enjoyed as a new science fiction franchise inspired by Alien.

In saying that, it is certainly heavily inspired by Alien. Ridley Scott seems to have abandoned all of the compelling ideas of Prometheus in favor of a greatest hits album from Alien and Alien. With the crew of Covenant armed to the teeth and frequently engaging in shootouts with the xenomorphs, the film constantly calls back to the action roots of James Cameron's brilliant sequel. Meanwhile, Scott tosses in about fifty chest-bursters and face-huggers for lovers of Alien, as well as smart guys touching those weird egg testicle things only to get killed. While the film is undeniably terrifying in its own right, Covenant never really feels like it is treading new ground. Prometheus, for all of its faults, was far more imaginative with its mythology. Covenant, in ditching that and going for the visceral and gory fear of the original, has practically nothing to say. Should Scott follow through on Alien: Awakening, it promises to be far more compelling, as long as it can blend the fear from Covenant with the ideas of Prometheus.

That is not to say that Scott abandoned everything from Prometheus, of course. He insisted on keeping the plot holes and vague references to the past that raise questions that, theoretically, will be answered later in the prequel to this film, Awakening. Unfortunately, as the second film and third entry into this film, it is about time we get answers and not more questions. The most egregious example here would be the scene of David unleashing the virus on the Prometheus muscly white dudes. There are two problems with this scene, mostly because it is a flashback. For one, the film is set ten years after Prometheus. In that film, these white dudes are mostly gone. Now, before ten years, it is bursting with life. This is absolutely impossible, so the timeline makes no sense. So, then the next jump is that he arrived beforehand, which is also impossible. As a result, it is a sequence that looks cool, but actually makes no sense whatsoever with what we already know. This misstep hints at how detrimentally underwritten Covenant is and how it seems to even ignore its own timeline.

As with any modern blockbuster, one of the key elements of Covenant is obviously its sense of spectacle. With wondrous special effects in Prometheus, one could only hope for the same with this film. Featuring gorgeous ship design - especially the embryo holders, which are a nice touch - and absolutely spectacular special effects in the sequence where the xenomorph gets kicked off of the ship, Covenant is undeniably a visual feast. However, it even has faults here. There is a sequence on the cargo hold where Daniels (Katherine Waterston) fights a xenomorph as Tennessee (Danny McBride) flies the cargo hold and, unfortunately, the effects are dreadful. It is clearly done in front of a green screen with no blending done to make its effects look natural. As a result, it is a scene that sticks out as a sour thumb and never looks natural in the least. It is a scene that has a strong sense of design and is a nice shootout, but it just never works visually as its poor effects completely takes the audience out of the film.

As with 2012's "Prometheus," "Alien: Covenant's" production design, visual scheme and special effects are about as top notch as any filmgoer could ask for, and both films also feature an inarguably compelling Michael Fassbender performance. However, where "Covenant" falters is in its tedious and borderline self-flagellatory crutch to world-build instead of develop character. Don't get me wrong, I admire the attempts at imagination and creativity. But when most questions and plot-holes are left frustratingly unanswered and unfilled, I can't help but notice some of the more lackluster elements running rampant in the film's character make-up. Here's hoping Ridley and co. can successfully tie everything off in the next one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was doomed from the conception. Alien fans were expecting a good horror, just like the original. Prometheus fans were expecting continuation and more background story about engineers. This movie tries to satisfy both and comes short on both ends.

When I left theater on premiere day I really hated this movie. I hated that Shaw was killed off-screen and we can only glimpse a bit of her in YouTube marketing shorts. It's almost as if Ridley Scott though "people didn't like Prometheus, let's forget it and destroy whetever's left of it". You don't just bin a whole movie of character development and build-up, not to mention Noomi Rapace is too good actress to get such treatment.

However I have recently watched it at home, on Blu-ray without any expectations and I must say I liked it much more. It's not to say the movie is what fans deserved, but it almost was and easily could have been.

Characters and writing aren't as good as in original Alien but they are miles better and not as outlandish as characters from Prometheus. It's just that by the end of the movie you only remember Daniels' name. You don't connect with characters as you did in original Alien. Maybe it's a bit overcrowded? Maybe smaller crew would be closer to viewer's heart?

The vistas are as you could expect from Ridley Scott movie - stunning. The enviroments have authentic look and make you awe. The same could be said about soundtrack although they reuse a lot of original Alien soundtrack. However some tracks are really, really good and convey Alien spirit very well. For example "Spores" - whoever composed it is a genius.

The only issues I have are with the script. I think people would like it more if it was Shaw's story. There could be colonization ship involved but one does not exclude the other. Covenant is more of a horror than Prometheus was, however Aliens just die too fast and with too little effort. It would be better to stick to the formula and have just one. As it is, they have been reduced to the same threat as a bear while they were suppoused to be perfect organisms, apex predators.

Scriptwriters also completly forgot about Prometheus and the strive for answers. There are none in this movie. The engineers are shown but you don't get to know anything more than in Prometheus. I'm also not satisfied with the idea about Alien virus existing as a plant/shroom. I think it was cheap.

I loved David's development and his part in the story. Michael Fassbender outdid himself and his character gave me more chills than all the aliens combined. I think if not for this character, this movie would be soulless.

This movie is quite alright unlike Prometheus. It's just not what fans wanted which I think caused review outlash. I'm not any writer, but if this movie was about Shaw and have colonization ship in it as well (introduced sometime into the movie) it would score much higher.

I'm not gonna beat around the bush in this review. It's the exact same formula we've seen in all of the other Alien films thus far: Space crew lands on a planet. Space crew is rapidly and noisily picked off by the aliens. What's left of the space crew tries to escape. Remaining space crew has to fight an alien one more time towards the end. Sound familiar? Maybe that's because that's pretty much been the EXACT same plot structure for all of these movies! It may work just fine the first couple of times, but anything more than that, and it feels unbelievably repetitive, case in point! The talented cast assembled tries to make the most of their roles, but can only do so much with what little development their characters receive before many of them are quickly killed off, a lot of them due to stupid mistakes and actions made on their part in the film. All I can really say that's positive is that some of the film's imagery/cinematography and visuals throughout look great as always, but it's not near enough to make up for the rest of this mess of a film. Overall, not only does it stick annoyingly close to the same old formula and tropes found in many of the previous films, it brings absolutely nothing new or interesting to the table either to really make it worthwhile in my opinion. Normally, I love Ridley Scott and his films, but I'm really starting to think that he's unfortunately losing his touch with the Alien franchise big time. Expand

I have always thought that "Prometheus" was an excellent science fiction film and a below average Alien film. I feel the opposite with "Covenant." Unfortunately, asI have always thought that "Prometheus" was an excellent science fiction film and a below average Alien film. I feel the opposite with "Covenant." As an Alien film, it succeeds at almost everything "Prometheus" failed at. Unfortunately, as a sci-fi genre film, "Covenant" falls a little flat.
My first and worst criticism of the film is; I felt almost zero suspense and wasn't scared at all. Am I desensitized to sci-fi violence because of the two excellent and too many awful Alien films that I've seen before it? Probably. The ending of the film was a little too "Empire Strikes Back" for me - an ending that tells the viewer to stay tuned for a sequel in a few years.
I didn't have the issues with the special effects as some other reviewers. I thought the film looked fine. I don't like shiny and smooth sci-fi effects or set pieces (Star Wars prequels anyone?). This film feels like the original 1979 version, and even has the music to boot (along with some from Prometheus).
The characters are barely realized. David is pretty much just as we left him in 2012, and Walter is a well-done brother. Fassbender is outstanding, as is Waterston, but the human characters just don't seem likeable or developed at all.
I enjoyed "Prometheus" as a terrific sci-fi film and wasn't bothered too much with the lack of xenomorph that upset many fans. This one had all kinds of nasty baddies, but had no human characters to root for. I tried very hard to love this movie, but I left a little confused with how I felt about it. I wouldn't say it's a failure, and I'll be happy to see it again on cable or blue-ray, but I think this film was hurt by a sub-par script and way over-par expectations.

The acting is goodAlien: covenant is not a bad film, but it's not a good film either. It's somewhere in the middle. Visually it is at times stunning but the weak plot holds it back and makes the viewer not care about the action sequences. The acting is good considering they are working with no character development. Apart from Michael Fassbender's character you really don't care for anyone else. When someone dies you often have no idea who they are and what relationship they have to the other characters. The film is basically Prometheus 2. Unfortunately these films are now seen as cannon to the Alien universe so all of the amazing ideas and discussion we had about where the Aliens came from or who the space jockey's are have all been answered; badly. The evolution of the xenomorph is so ridiculous and unbelievable it has ruined any imagination that was applied to the original Alien films. Really we would have been better off without the Covenant and Prometheus. The Alien design is also weak, they just weren't scary. The CGI stands out a mile off, the effects used in Alien and Aliens are far better. I personally still do not see these films as part of the Alien story, to me Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 are the real movies, everything else are spin offs. As a popcorn movie it works. You can tune out and enjoy the visuals and sound and walk away happy but will forget the experience within an hour of leaving the cinema. There;s a few nods to the original film which are cool and there's the occasional memorably tense scene (look out for the Alien hatching from a crew members back while a doctor is locked in a medical room with him). But they are few and far between. There's also a very strange homoerotic scene with Michael Fassbender and Michael Fassbender which is so hilarious that it feels more like it should be in a parody film. Also look out for the scene where Fassbender plays god to a new born alien who mimics his 'creation' stance! It was a real cringe scene. So why have I given if a 6 if I'm so negative about the film? Well I did kind of enjoy it, if it wasn't an Alien film it would be an okay summer sci-fi. It's a visually pleasing date movie. It gives a little smile and entertains as a big dumb Hollywood blockbuster. Expand

Acting was top notch especially from Fassbender, Waterson and McBride and there was some really nice shots and moments but I just thought the plot was uninspiring and the ending was predictable and cheap. It felt more like an alien movie which is a plus but I just feel like the execution should have been better as you can clearly see that this film struggles to find its identity throughout. Character motivations (especially David's) were unclear and offered little to no explanation to why things are happening the way they are. The crew of the Covenant and their shear stupidity are another thing that really did this film in for me as well as some holes in the plot regarding ship fail-safe and back up protocols. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you liked Prometheus, you'll like this movie. It has much the same tone, pacing, writing, and visuals. The acting is just as good too. This movie also disappointed me for the same reason. Nonsense. In Prometheus, they make a big deal about mapping out an alien spaceship before they enter it near the beginning of the movie. Then they proceed to get lost without an explanation why. Lost? This ruined the rest of the movie for me. After this, I was just looking for more screw ups. I saw one. Near the end of the movie, the heroine rushes into the cockpit of her spacecraft to tell the pilot to smash their ship into an alien spacecraft that is taking off, because "If it makes it to earth, there will be no earth to go back to." The pilot does this without question, comment, like it was nothing. What? There were probably others, but its been awhile since I've seen it. I was so hyped for that movie.
With Covenant, I kept my anticipation in check. I still ran into the same nonsense. You bee-bop onto a planet that can support humans, that you've never surveyed before, without helmets, and have two of you crew get "infected". In the ensuing panic, one of the movies characters mention "quarantining" the infected crew. The crew had a way of dealing with someone getting infected, but did nothing to try to prevent it. Wow. The movie even rehashes situations from the first Alien movie, ah-la, "The Force Awakens". Even so, the movie does end up being more watchable than Prometheus.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll give you my opinion filled with spoilers of course, and sorry for my poor English. I liked: mostly the first part, the gorgeous shots of the covenant with it sails fully open and the arrival to the planet. The relationship walter/david and what it implied more than what they showed. What I didn't like and this is the long part: the many mistakes made by the crew and the silly security decisions. Starting with arriving to a planet with unknown biosphere (bacteria and viruses you don know) without at least hazmat suits, that would be difficult for the plot to evolve since the first contagion is via air, but that is exactly why you always wear your spacesuit! Same plot holes from Prometheus, scientist not acting scientifically. After that they arrive to a new civilization and they act like if something they see every day, no awe or anything, the one more mesmerized seems to be Walter. And from there my suspension of disbelief totally disappeared. A Tennessee that allows the covenant to get closer to the ground risking the whole mission as if it was a common expedition. The quick way the show what happened at the arrival of David and how little we still know about the engineers. The stupid way David lures the captain into watching the egg and how quickly the xenomorph evolves from a small being into a huge one in a few minutes and with out eating... And the ending, how is it that David is authorized to have any type of interaction with MUTHUR and why MUTHUR doesn't react to him being on the ship as she reacts to a unknown life on board... I could say way more but I probably already bored you. I think is a 6/10 a lost opportunity, they tried to blend alien, aliens and Prometheus and do a lot of fan service in one movie and didn't work for me. Is not a bad movie but is not what I expected, liked Prometheus way better. Expand

This one though is far too gory, dulling the great affect. But it's so well done that it felt like I was experiencing actual awful deaths. Prometheus had some really interesting lore but this one fails to get that feeling. So I can see why there is some great disappointment. But even with all of that, this movie manages to be one of the most inspiring ever. Daniels surpasses even the likes of the titular Ellen Ripley who I was sooo into. My appeal for Katherine Waterston is off the charts! She was so enviable that I want to become a actor! Daniels may very well be the best heroine in all of cinema. Not bad for a pretty good movie :) Expand

Like Prometheus it is again not a true Alien movie, has a great story underneath with lots of philosophical, psychological and moral themes and the characters are also again nominees for the Darwin Award or whatever the fictional equivalent is. I must admit that I like much of the story and themes. Would it be not linked to the Alien franchise and promises made to be more of an Alien movie it would be more accepted. Also they tried more to make it look like an Alien movie than the prequel. Here I admit that they failed and I looks more like “See, we gave you more of the stuff you wanted. Aren't we great?”. This is an example for the middle-ground being the worst alternative. A true Alien movie like Alien 1 or 2 or even a better version of Alien 4 could work. Alternatively being a true prequel like telling the story of the Engineers directly and not some unsatisfying aspects as side story would also work. There is a small realm of giving answers and still have the mystery and imagination intact. But lets go back to the movie. At the end of Prometheus David and Noomi (Elisabeth Shaw) set up to travel to the home-world of the Engineers to get answers to their questions. However Covenant already changed this Alien 3 style and it is the first disappointment. The potential is lost immediately as much as the hype or good faith the fans had. Years later the colony-ship “Covenant” is hit by a neutrino burst and damaged. After the crew is reanimated from stasis by Android Walter they find a transmission from a nearby planet thought to be unexplored and has better living condition than their original destination. They set out to explore it. So started the story and it has great philosophical, moral and psychological themes. However it is not what we expected and there are dumb decisions and the actors cant correct the flaws in the script. I want to clarify here: This could be a truly remarkable movie and I like much of the concepts and ideas. The execution and expectations however drag it down. It fails to impress you and it never succeeded in getting the immersion and emotions from Alien 1 and Alien 2. Also Again there is a great cast that is probably not used to full potential. Exceptions are of cause Michael Fassbender in a brilliant performance and Katherine Waterston with a great performance but great stupidity at the end. This is a fitting transition to stupid actions. Again there are so much brain-dead decisions here by the characters (Actual an improvement compared to the even worse decisions in Prometheus). It decreases the experience and my rating. The special effects and sets are nice and I think there is nothing to complain. Overall this is again a hit and miss. It has it moments that are truly excellent but also truly poor decisions and ideas not working in the intended way. I will give it a 6/10 and hope it has not destroyed the fan support for the franchise. Just restart with a reboot of Alien 3 with a new (and better) script. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Decent Stand-alone. Lackluster origin story for the galaxy's most feared species.

This movie has tense moments and pretty good pacing. The cast is not nearly as memorable as the original two, and the lead is certainly not Ripply, but the movie delivers on some solid, if not frequently visited ideas of what makes life sacred and worthy to live. The big short coming of this movie though is that it's connected to the Alien universe, and employs some very poor, cliche plot gimmicks to push forward the beginning of the infamous Xenos.

Vague spoiler:

The origin of the Aliens, according to this movie, is not awe inspiring or even horrifying. It's a petty pursuit and, evidently, could be achieved within the span of 10 years. Who knew?

Also in order to get them to propagate, you only need one single person to completely ignore all logical human responses or even the illogical ones that stem from basic survival instincts of panic and fear of the unknown and get that person to do dumb things over and over again until you have your master species.

This movie is a well directed movie, which saves it from being outright bad. Good job Mr. Ridley Scott, but this was still some really poor story telling and writing.

"I'll do the fingering"

I liked "Alien: Covenant" a lot. Didn't have much expectations going in and was pleased of what I saw. It improves a lot of the issues people had with "PROMETHEUS" and brings the original horror back to the series. While I can't say "Covenant" is a great movie or anything (or just another alien re-hash). However, at least this movie gives it's prequel a purpose and opens doors for future films. It's a movie for both fans of Alien and Prometheus.

For me, I really liked Prometheus and was interested in the ideas it brought up. I mean, I do agree the character's were idiots, but I wouldn't call the rest of movie complete sh*t because of that. The criticism were so heavy that it made Ridley Scott change his mind of the original plans for the sequels. By giving us the alien, the space crew, and lots of blood.

How lovely

Ridley Scott once again knocks it out of the park. The intensity, beautiful landscapes, and the almost poetic feel to it. Leaving you sinking in your seat with the amount of terror and gory details on screen. Pretty much a trademark for Scott. It's a slasher film in space, but steps away from being anything generic.

I ain't the first to say this, but at this point I don't care, because Michael Fassbender is such an amazing actor. One of the most versatile actors working today and he kills it in every scene. Playing double roles as David / Walter - who are the most fascinating characters with some compelling scenes together. Quite honestly, he's scarier than the Xenomorphs themselves and the movie is aware of this. The aliens are pretty much afterthoughts. That's how good he is.

However, Covenant has it's flaws. The mash up of Alien and Prometheus could have been a lot sharper, as it kept switching tones and should have been one thing. Especially in the third act which suffers from that tone problem and was too overblown. Without spoiling anything, but there's a twist at the end which was absurdly obvious and easy to predict.

Speaking of predictable, every time a character is going to die (or bite the dust if you like), the film makes it very obvious who's going out. It would have been great if there were some surprises. Like a major character who we thought is the lead, gets killed before the horror starts. It's nothing new, but it's something.

Overall rating: Despite my issues, I was surprise of how much I liked this. I already know this is going to be ripped to pieces by people in a few months time, but like always, I don't care.

Not much is answered in Alien: Covenant - although the unknown is more terrifying.

Gosh. I don't want to bash people who give it a high rating, because there is some enjoyable kernel, a morsel of good fun in this movie, but damn. You need to crank up your "suspension of disbelief" to god damn 11.

Wait, you ask. It's a SF movie with xenomorphs, androids and spacefaring ships. Of course we need to suspense disbelief, moron! Sure, you're right, but there is such a thing as INTERNAL LOGIC and this movie pretty much kicked it out and dumped down the gutter. It's not even in the plot, since - while extremely predictable - is serviceable and fun to follow.

It's in the fact, that THIS group of soldiers and scientists is even stupider than the bunch in Prometheus.

I know! I didn't think it was possible to achieve, but here we go. For me it is an extremely cheap horror / thrille (a movie in general!) if the plot requires every single human being in it to act like complete morons. If the corporation / country had a casting for the crew of Covenant, it picked the worst of the worst, the bottom of the barrel... Idiots, incompetent dumbos with zero self-preservation instict.

From their first encounter we see that this bunch of 'heroes' is untrained for anything, incapable of dealing in any situation that is harder that turning the light on, ill-prepared to make decision and completely unaware of the idea of COMMON SENSE. You as a viewer just rot there in your chair, cringing in pain and suffering as you watch the Crew of Covenant strive with every breath to end themselves in various fashion of spectacular idiocy. I don't want to spoil the events of this movie, but this people shouldn't crew a god-damn swing in a kiddie park...

Visuals are great. It's a shame that there is so little Xenomorph and its reduced to a pretty brainless beast, lacking in horror and dread of an ultimate predator. Music is solid, build atmosphere well. Some acting is fantastic to be sure.

It's a shame that I couldn't enjoy this movie because the trope of Horror Characters being Idiots is so mighty in this one.

The CGI is good and not too distracting. Overall, this movie has some good things going for it, but the problem is, as hard as it tries, it does not really add anything interesting to the franchise or to sci-fi in general. Ridley Scott leans way too much on Fassbender to carry the movie. The story-line tries way to hard to marry the Prometheus and Alien plots, when it really needs to just pick one. I actually thought that Prometheus was a really good movie, and would have been more interested in seeing some continuation of that rather than a half-baked Alien movie. As others have mentioned already, the movie at times is ruined by seemingly unrealistic actions and decisions made by the characters. Further, Ridley Scott has forgotten how to execute character development, and ultimately, we don't care if one of them gets torn apart by an Alien. This is frustrating because it seems like he tries to develop the characters and illicit some emotional attachment by the audience, but it fails. Everything seems superficial. I think the movie is worth a see for die hard Alien franchise fans, but it is overall very underwhelming. Expand

This movie is okay and as far as meatfest gore it gets a passing grade. There just isn't much development here and the best parts of the movie are the tete-a-tete between Walter and David. There are a few disturbing scenes in the movies, so I would advise taking children under 10. Genocide is not a topic for very, young minds. Expand

Alien: Covenant packs more suspense and action than Prometheus, but compared with Ridley Scott's previous works, this is just another pale, unsatisfying and somehow flawed prequel for the franchise.

I have to admit I expected a little more from Alien: Covenant. But there are many that argue that Aliens (the second film) was the last good one, and there are fair points there.

Prometheus was not entirely what I expected either. The direction they've gone with these films has waffled heavily based on rewrites and fan responses to early trailers and so on, and the final product has suffered for it.

Covenant's biggest issue is that it's too damn dark. The captain of the ship burns to death in his cryopod in the opening minutes of the film, and that basically sets the tone for everything after. It has the sense that things aren't going to end well throughout, much like Drag Me to Hell, with an ending that equally qualifies as a Diabolus Ex Machina. I can't say I didn't enjoy several parts of the film, most notably the fights, which are in the finest tradition of the series, marked by their frantic pace and quick improvisation by the human characters to overcome their seemingly superior enemy. These scenes are part of what made the earlier films so great and set the tone for darker sci-fi for decades therafter. As an aside, I was rather skeptical of casting Danny McBride in this film, but my doubts proved unfounded.

However, Covenant suffers from many of the same problems as other current generation horror films, most notably the predictably boneheaded series of decisions that lead the characters to horrible fates that could have been readily avoided. This was an element of the earlier films, but back then you could argue that it was still excusable with the audience. Nowadays, I'd expect film characters, especially trained colonists and security personnel, to be a lot wiser. While its certainly better then Alien: Resurrection, and blows the Alien vs. Predator movies out of the water, it has a bit of its head up its own rear with its philosophical and religious subtext. I have seen many characters like the villain before and their flawed rationale for their actions comes across as more forced then tragic. They come just short of card-carrying villainy and it sort of spoils the movie. By all means watch it if you've been keeping up with the series, but don't expect a miracle of screenwriting. Series newcomers should watch at least the first two films before going anywhere near this one. Also check out Aliens: Infestation on Nintendo DS if you're a gamer.

While it's a pretty cheap and lazy attempt at an Alien sequel with paperthin characters, laughable and sometimes annoying character choices and not so great effects, I enjoyed it more than Prometheus, because it wasn't really trying to be more than it was. Prometheus is still a superior movie, but Alien: Covenant is more entertaining in my opinion. It's like the schlocky horror films of the 80s, like the Friday the 13th movies, which I honestly really love, in a guilty pleasure kind of way. All the stuff with Fassbender was pretty great, the characters he plays were the best part of the film on a critical level. Though I would have liked it to be more of a Prometheus sequel rather than an Alien prequel ("remake"), it's still a really enjoyable film, if you don't take it seriously. Honestly I wish Ridley Scott would stop making these Alien films, but I have to admit I am kind of looking forward to the next film. Expand

Ridley Scott has been called a visionary director for some of his early work („Alien“, „Blade Runner“). Later, he has been known as the man able always able to put together some big-ass epic.
But I would argue that Scott's projects are not really famous for excellent screenplays, or actually becoming bona fide megahits.
Only four times during his whole directing career spanning 50+ years has he given birth to a movie pulling some serious profit from cinemas: „Gladiator“, „Hannibal“, „The Martian“ and „Prometheus“.
(Okay, the original „Alien“ was super profitable too, but only because it had a small budget.)
That may explain why the grand old man is still interested in making „Alien“ movies, although he turned 79 last November and is certainly aware that he’s not gonna be around for much longer.
Yes, "Prometheus" and "Covenant" have been his attempts to expand on one of his most widely known and loved works, only with much bigger budget and computer power available today. Who couldn't dig that?
Somehow, returning to his legacy piece after all these years, he is still not interested in giving new „Alien“ a proper story worthy of 21st century. Not in „Prometheus“, not in „Covenant“.
There are flashes of potential such as adding android characters and a female hero resembling Ripley. but storywise, changes are cosmetical and don’t go near anywhere like trying to develop something with any real dramatic weight.
It’s still all about seemingly unstoppable extraterrestrial on a killing spree. Now with prettier pictures and more awesome explosions than in 1979.
There’s really not much more to talk about. It’s an eighth „Alien“ movie – sixth, if you want to exclude two „AVP“ spin-offs. Action scenes are good, everything else is sadly disposable. It's not a fail but it's essential only for the biggest genre fans.
