The film features the return of classic Alien monsters such as the bursters, chest bursters, face huggers, Xenomorphs, and Neomorphs, as well as familiar claustrophobic settings. Set 10 years after the events of Prometheus, the film follows the crew of the USCSS Covenant as they head towards a paradise planet, but a catastrophe causes them to deviate to a new planet where they encounter the monstrous Neomorphs and the return of the Xenomorph. The film boasts stunning visuals and cinematography, intense action and gore, and a strong cast, but suffers from heavy and overly technical dialogue, a slow pacing in the first act, and predictable plot twists.

I'd say it's one of the weaker cast lists of the franchise, not that I have anything against the performances here but I wasn't blown away or overly interested in anyone in this 2017 production. Michael Fassbender is the obvious standout from an acting viewpoint, though I don't really dig his character all that much to be honest. The rest are a bit forgettable.

You can tell it's well made and it does look the part, with it being worth the watch to complete the franchise and all that. Of the sixth films, though, it'd be in my personal bottom two (*excl. short films) - in fairness, that isn't as bad as it sounds, it's just the series has seen better.

Really enjoyed it. Far better than Prometheus but not in the original Alien's league. Katherine Waterstone is great in this. Well written and directed, great set design and cinematography. Thankfully James Franco is only in it for a few minutes.

A fine enough sequel to Prometheus.
Ridley Scott is at his best when working within the sci-fi genre and he has made a suspenseful, creppy thriller here.

It's not as well packaged and inspiring as its predecessor Prometheus, but Alien: Covenant has all the same hallmarks of this new universe Ridley Scott has created. The soundtrack is very evocative, worth listening to on its own. Spores is a stand out and will make your hairs stand on end. The plot and flow of the movie is a bit clumsy and I think this has a lot to do with a poorly conceived script, however the overarching story holds up. The cast could have done with one or two different actors but overall serves the movie well. Michael Fassbender does a good job of being David. I wish only that we got that element of horror and dread a bit more. With the right script I'm sure Ridley Scott can do anything. Comparing this to the original Alien, and having gone back and watched all the original films, I think the two new movies have already gone far above and beyond what we originally saw in those films from a story-telling and world-building standpoint and it would be foolish to think the new films are somehow inferior. Prometheus and Alien: Covenant represent a much more evocative future for the universe Alien is set. As I said all they need is a good script. Prometheus set the bar, Alien Covenant reaches it at times, let's have a third instalment that totally blows our sucks off. Expand

I guess nobody with at least half a brain wanted to explore space and they just sent in the idiots they couldn't otherwise get rid off. Not really much suspense in this prequel since you pretty know how it's going to turn out from the sequels. Despite the obvious weaknesses in the story, the action and visuals are still quite entertaining. Let's call it a low seven. Expand

It gave me a similar feeling of the original, but with a new plot, further story depth to the Prometheus movie, and current generation visual effects. I thought the pacing was excellent. It had this amazing rising tension the whole way and every time the alien made an appearance, it was shocking and nerve-wrecking. What steals the show though, is the new territory the movie explores besides the aliens themselves. It creates a philosophical aspect that stays with you even after the movie is over. Even better, we learn more about the Alien/Prometheus universe and also get some previous mysteries and questions answered. The ending also gives us something to ponder till the next sequel. Overall, it made me want more and curious to what the next movie has in store for us. Expand

Prometheus was a confusing mess, and this movie is trying to get back on track, it just needs less robo-bros. It was creepy...
But like in the comics, it should get cool. Alien hybrids and breeding are being introduced.
I suggest looking at the comics. It's only once the hybrids are introduced (on a major scale) that things get really interesting.

Good robot! Bad robot!

After some gaps, the 'Alien' franchise came alive with the prequel 'Prometheum' which originally said to be a spin-off. Particularly, it landed in the hands of the original maker. Now, even the original title back in action. It's another prequel, hence the prequel series on the making. The next film too will be the same kind, before the overall storyline in the franchise align in a straight line.

I enjoyed it. But not as good as 'Prometheum' or the first two 'Alien' films. The issue with it was, the same old cliché. There's nothing in the story. It was like any space film that's set in a similar fashion. The 80 per cent of the film was what we had seen in the earlier 'Alien' films. Just altered scenes with a new cast and a great visuals. So the update makes it the special.

The story focused too much on the robot. The alien parts were reduced. Because it was like the first appearance of the original aliens we saw in the old films. Precisely to say, the origins. Genetic modification, crossbreeding, there comes the beast. From this film what I have learnt was, it was nothing but more or less the same old fear the humans have about that the robots which are the ones going to make humans go extinct. Except here the aliens come between them. Hence, falling prey to the same clichéd theme from any sci-fi that had humanoid.

Nevertheless, well maintained film in its balance coming from previous hits in the series and going forward to bring more hits. This flick would serve as a fine bridge between them. So only 18 years to go between this, from 2104 to 2122. I'm already anticipating the next film. As I have heard, that film would be focused more on the robot. That's going to be a different experience. Fassbender's time to have some space adventures.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who grew up with a pretty dark childhood, horror movies hold a special place in my heart. At an early age, they put a face to the horrors I experienced. The original Alien movies were, and still are a personal favorite of mine. And before you ask, yes, even Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection are included. While I was not a huge fan of Prometheus (I sat there for its entire run-time waiting for the millisecond the alien was present post credits), I was ecstatic to hear that its sequel (and prequel to the original Alien movies) was going to put the Xenomorph, or a version of it, at the forefront.

The film opens with David having a conversation with his “father”, Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) about his birth and place in the world. David (Michael Fassbender) appears to be suffering from the same daddy issues that were prevalent in Prometheus. After some pouting about how he will never be able to create offspring due to being a synthetic, we are introduced to the Covenant and its crew.

The Covenant is transporting a few thousand colonists to a new home world for a fresh start. After a rouge meteor strikes the ship and kills some colonists and the ships captain, Branson (James Franco), the 2nd in command Oram (Billy Crudup) takes over. As soon as he does, a strange distress signal consisting of garbled music by the great John Denver from a nearby planet is picked up by the ship. The writers chose to touch on the captain’s religious faith, which is never really explored, but I believe this hints to a faith that believe that God came from space and eventually came to worship the Aliens in Dark Horse Comic’s Aliens vs. Predator comic series. Contrary to the some of the teams’ advice, Oram chooses to visit the planet to evaluate it for possible human inhabitants or colonization.

Once on the planet, members of the team start becoming ill from small spores and stuff hits the fan. I found it funny that just minutes after being on an uncharted planet with no living creatures to be seen, they take their helmets off and breathe the unknown atmosphere. After an initial confrontation with the Xenomorphs, they are saved by David, whom has crash landed on this planet after the events of Prometheus.

The remainder of the film showcases the struggles of the team on the planet and the lack of communication between the remaining members of the crew hovering in space above the planet. While it’s an enjoyable film, once the alien is added to the story, it suffers from some pretty major pacing issues. The true horror of the situation doesn’t begin until the last 30-40 minutes of the film, but when it finally hits, it doesn’t let up.

Technically, director Ridley Scott offers some amazing special effects, both practical and CGI. My major complaint with the film is, much like Prometheus before it, the technology featured in the film is far more advanced than that in the original Alien films that take place after this. While not overly distracting from this film, it does make you go ask why. Additionally, the insight into the creation or evolution of the Xenomorph is never fully explored. What’s left is more questions, and even less answers as to how they evolved from what we saw in Prometheus to the Alien shown in the older films that followed this. In my humble opinion, this film would have served better as part of a new trilogy in the Alien franchise, which would have explained the technological advancements as well as left room for the evolution of the creatures. The fact that the aliens at the beginning of the film emerge from the host fully developed without the use of eggs, looking more like a cat than a snake, seems that the creatures de-evolved into the Xenomorph we all know and love.

The cast put forth believable performances, with Michael Fassbender (pulling double duty as 2 synthetics) and Danny McBride being standouts. I was concerned with the casting of McBride due to his previous roles primarily being comedic, but he was a pleasant surprise. The real stars of the movie, the Xenomorphs, look as terrifying as ever and if anything, deserved more screen time than they received.

While not a perfect film, Alien Covenant is a welcome addition to the Alien franchise. Despite its shortcomings, it is an entertaining experience. With its surprise twist ending, I can only hope that Ridley Scott’s inevitable follow up offers more answers and resolves some of the prequel’s many plot holes.

Sure, it might not be Alien or Aliens, but it sure as hell is much better than Alien 3, Prometheus or Part 4.
I loved how Scott made everything look modern, yet still retained the same style as in Alien or Aliens. Like the computers, the design of the ships, the sounds of the computers, even the mentality of the people were straight from the 70s or 80s.

I really am excited for the next movie.

While Prometheus was all about exploring creation, man's complex relationship with it, and the possibility of a creator, this sequel to it uses Ridley Scott's fantastic Xenomorph creation to take the series more back to it's horror rootsWhile Prometheus was all about exploring creation, man's complex relationship with it, and the possibility of a creator, this sequel to it uses Ridley Scott's fantastic Xenomorph creation to take the series more back to it's horror roots while still asking some philosophical questions along the way. The themes this time are still centered around creation, but the focus is more on human error. The fallacy of our ways. The dangers of our constant quest for progress can bring. Even some creator vs the created tension as well. The best part of all though is that serves as a return to form for the Alien series, bringing the menacing Xenomorph back into our lives.

Scott wastes little time in letting the blood flow. There are plenty of brutal kills and the usage of gore is so excessive that it reaches B-rated, schlocky levels of fun. Scott once again gives us the total experience of a slasher film set in space. His scenes of grander destruction are gorgeous. Ridley Scott proves once again to be one of the masters of the science-fiction genre. His immaculately crafted plot and beautifully created scenery are incredible. The latter proving to be the right amounts of alien and historic in appearance.

The movie also served to increase my appreciation for Michael Fassbender. His dual performance here is nothing short of incredible as he is portraying almost two completely different individuals. Both of whom are most well-written in the movie. For a movie already strong in plot, action, and character it is amazing just how much Fassbender does to bolster all of it's strengths and abilities. He takes things to another level and the movie goes to show his outstanding ability as an actor. He's not the only notable person onscreen though. While everyone else is pretty much playing the standard character roles one would expect in this kind of movie, there is Danny McBride really stepping out of his comedic comfort zone in favor of a surprisingly emotional performance. After Fassbender he is the next best person onscreen.

Covenant proves to be a welcome return to form Ridley Scott and the Alien series he created. It builds on the groundwork laid by Prometheus, leading to much better results and continues the story of it masterfully. This is the Alien prequel we've been waiting for. If the writing has one flaw it's that the big twist at the end is totally predictable. I would also say that the big finale relies a bit too much on action over horror, but overall those complaints are minor in comparison to everything else going on. Bloody good fun and surprisingly deep to boot, Alien: Covenant is not to be missed, longtime Alien fans or newcomers alike.

No one has heard our screams (requests) yet

"Alien: Covenant", remake and simultaneously prequel, is the latest entry in the saga of "Alien." The most recent feature film, under the leadership of Ridley Scott, is repulsive and intriguing when it wants but slow, abstruse and tragic when not realize that it is. Despite the fact that it boasts about the progression of the mistakes previously made—factor that to some extent is true, at least visually—, the story of the crew reiterates falling into other vices that impede equating to the sci-fi horror bible as is the original "Alien".

Basing on the usual narrative biotype, Scott—father of the saga— conceives the story on which horrific creatures evolve with a wide list of screenwriters. When you hear the name of more than two scriptwriters in the conception of a work, the reviews mostly tend to be unfavorable; It's really unheard of the project that manages to jell and fit all the ideas in the same plot with satisfaction. Here, Hollywood fixation about stuffing of elements a tale is present in the complete screenplay, more not in the sketch of the traditional story.

The protagonist, a capite ad calcem, is Michael Fassbender, who performs two characters worthy of praise. Fassbender decides to further explore his acting skills under a hard gestural and vocal force by portraying, respectively, androids David and Walter. The first one is a synthetic human model assigned to the crew of the USCSS that served as a guide and the second one is the most brand-new incorporation into "Alien" universe, Walter is the greatest triumph of trial and error in the creation of androids, being the first of a better-forged species than David 6's. Fassbender ratifies why he is one of the best actors of our century, thanks to the roles given by Scott.

In times of "Wonder Woman", Katherine Waterston's aim (Daniels) was neither to conquer nor emulate the original heroic lady interpreted by Sigourney Weaver, her character, always according to her, must be an example of thinking strength of women, of their aptness in any human field, of building hope and faith and a model role for future leaders; to emphasize the attitude of females in a sexist Hollywood, plainly. Her purposes have been fulfilled, but also, they have been notoriously distorted by external expressions. And the new problems come to light. Attenuation of philosophical load, so characteristic of the saga being the promoter of its existence, is restricted to a ten-minute deep prologue where Walter and his creator refute on gods, origins and art matters. Another terrible mistake is the extremely long introduction–more than sixty minutes—to put us in the atmosphere of the characters, more than half of its initial act could be cut. However, the biggest mess is that indicated in the preceding paragraph. In addition to having a prestigious Oscar award by its special effects, in USCSS Nostromo movie the appearance of the aliens is scarce, thus, horror comes out of the tension of the situation, of the alert state that aroused a sudden jump of the alien, even, spaceship interiors produced uncertainty and insecurity, the famous and masterful suspense by which the work is praised. The flaw lies in the decision of Scott about redeeming himself with the short participation of the xenomorph on the screen, he sins due to innocent because although the first aftermath of the lethal virus in the body of a crewmember is frightening, disgusting and surprising, this pace begins to wander, a back and forth between scenes, leaving as the chief source of supposed terror to the alien, fantastically created by CGI, causing a suspense lack in the plot, unfortunately, affecting in the prediction of the final cliffhanger, however, concerning this, it leaves a feeling of wanting far more, blessed Walter!

Independent of the flaws of "Prometheus", "Alien: Covenant" amend some of the issues of the previous installments, however, adds many others placing the film in a limbo, in a loop. This movie fails to be classified under horror genre—despite its delectable gore— rather, it's an audio-visual sci-fi production that raises questions that no one requested and, in the end, doesn't respond the already proposed ones. Having as a measure of the quality Scott's previous films," Covenant "is far from being like the original movie, however, the way of introducing, artistically, the questionable story is fascinating, a paradise where they won't hear your screams, although, we're doing it. "The Path to Paradise begins in Hell", right now, we're going to the real hell, in all the extension and effect of the word.

Some of the scenes were pretty intense and creepy. The plot was typical for an alien movie although they turned it into this whole creationism thing. I would recommend watching prometheus again just to refresh everything before watching this.

The tension & build up from the two infected people to the outbreak is great. The Gore is wonderful; love the Shower scene. 90% of CGI is really good. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoilers: Just an Amazing film, i don't normally like horror films but love the Alien Franchise. it was full of twists and turns, and some of the best scenes just send shivers down my spine... Literally. there is a load of lore in this film and some of it needs you to piece it together as it goes along. one of the parts where one of the most significant forms of the Xenomorph, The Facehugger hugs one of the crews face while another tries to free it off him and succeeds but at the cost of some acid burnt skin and his own life as one of the main Xenomorphs prey's from above, the guy with the acid burnt skin runs of and survives... this scene just had me in a paranoid state through the rest of film thinking did the Facehugger lay the egg, or was it unsuccessful... it was the first as it took longer burst out later in the film. David (the original from Prometheus) returns as he was stranded on the home world of the "Engineers" which Shaw and David pursue at the end of Prometheus which Shaw "Died" on impact with the world. now one part (SPOILER if You didn't read before... idiots), Walter (new David) is fighting the old David because David was obsessed with creation and experimentation with the Xenomorphs studying them with the numerous subspecies. David was the reason Shaw died, and when everything was going Walter's way during the fight with him being better, it cuts black... now this is when everything goes out of hand, David stabs and kills Walter successfully unlike before, takes Walter clothes and portrays him making Shaw and the rest think its Walter when its not. That's how the ending happens, Daniels finds out when she starts to go into cryosleep, which now that David is running the ship Covenant, he puts 2 facehugger embryo's into the freezer and that's when it ends. now that makes me excited for the 3rd film. Prometheus was great and so was this film. sorry for pointing out the obvious but its for the people who don't know what happened at those parts for the delusional. worth the see and the gore makes it better on the way the necromorphs evolve and how the original Big Chap is formed. It happens to Prometheus as well. Alien (1979) shines not only in lead characters but also the crews. Covenant is weaker in the portrayal of the heroine compare to Prometheus, but thanks to Michael Fassbender (once again) great acting able to strengthen her as a character. Story wise, it all very much alike to Prometheus in a good way. I personally think that any fans or casual movie goers should definitely give this one a try. I'm of two minds on this one, much like Ridley Scott seems to have been. He wanted to continue the origin story he started with Prometheus, continue to explore what the search for answers entails and the mysteries it has over us. But he also knew that this time around, he had to deliver the Alien goodness or audiences would get all pissy again and wouldn't understand the point of it all and blah blah blah (it wasn't called Alien: Prometheus for a reason).

So here we have a typical Alien type movie setup with a big spaceship and slumberers awakening from their cryo comas too early and then exploring some desolate planet where of course the **** hits all kinds of fan. Things gestate, parts burst, there's blood and violence. But the thing is, Scott's heart doesn't seem to be in these scenes. They almost feel as if they've been directed by someone else (perhaps Luke Scott, his son, the 2nd unit director)? They're almost mindless in their CGI flash-cut matter of factness (is there anything worse than CGI Xenomorph?). Nothing surprising or engaging or even remotely resembling the kind of terror on display in the original Alien - just flashiness and shininess and fastness.

But then there's this other movie all mixed up in it that's a more direct sequel in line with what Scott was doing in Prometheus. It involves David holed up on this world creating life, studying life, becoming a God. There's strange architecture from the Engineers (indelible), philosophizing and eroticism and genuine intrigue and mystery. It's about the creation of horror by a rejected and alienated creation trying to discover its place in the universe (turtles all the way down) and it's far more interesting than the generic space creature movie that keeps popping up.

It was a valiant attempt to blend the two but it doesn't work because you get the feeling this wasn't meant to be an Alien movie in the first place (we already have that/those) and Scott didn't really want to do that. But Scott is nothing if not smart about his business decisions - Fox funded it and audiences were interested again at first, more so than they would have been if it were Prometheus 2 - and he got to at least make part of a movie he was interested in. Let's hope for a third, one that audiences can engage with on its own terms.

OnRidley Scott has done a great job in directing his latest film, which I consider to be a perfect combination of action and horror. The cast of actors is outstanding, especially Michael Fassbender, who develops his role in a masterly way. On the other hand, the appearance of the aliens, their structure and evolution are perfect; You can see the work that was dedicated to them, because they were not completely created by computer so that they did not suffer a loss of realism. Likewise, Covenant also has its bad points: nobody can believe the naivete of the characters ( just in minutes they researched absolutely everything about the planet, and also they do not even take any preventive measures when they arrive). Some characters stand out because of their lack of depth, such as the case of Tenessee, which I consider a great character that unfortunately was wasted. Also, there are others that you will not care what the future holds for them, if they survived or not.
In summary, I found a great movie that manages to entertain (even if you are not a fan and have not seen the previous ones) with its incredible effects and talented actors. 100% recommendable.

However, this does not detract from a largely more suspenseful and dark film compared to its predecessor, Prometheus. Ridley Scott handles this film with enough precision that the stories and philosophical ideas (however convoluted they may be) are treated well in the context of the over-arching plot. Though the attempts, or rather the execution of these thought-provoking ideas into the film could've been done much better. With some worthwhile action and terrorizing aliens, the blockbuster aspect of the film is done very well. And though the plot does become slightly rushed towards the end and somewhat predictable, it is still a very solid movie and a film definitely worth watching. Expand

This is pretty magnificent and Prometheus makes sense as part of the theme even if the plot was a bit 'holey'.

2 points deducted because something visceral seems to be lost here, the movies are great ideas but the medium seems to have taken a back seat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would have gave it **** if I didn't see the twist coming a mile away. Otherwise Alien: Covenant is the best since Alien and Aliens. I just felt like Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) got the Hicks and Newt Alien 3 treatment. David (Michael Fassbender) proves here that he's the key character of these movies. We don't root for people to survive though just for them to die off screen. Who says Scott won't do that again with the 3rd film.
I enjoyed most the movie but a lot of people die because they were stupid. When some creepy Android says "follow me, I want to show you something." You don't goespecially if that creepy Android is David. So I felt like their were some horror cliches. Especially with "the everything is fine...oh wait no it's not!" typical horror movie ending. I am not exactly defending why Alien: Covenant is one of the best though. The film is engaging and interesting during it's slow moments. I enjoyed learning more of why David does what he does.
I like that he actually says "curiosity killed the cat!" Since that's what I was thinking about him. His curiosity is very dangerous. The film does skip the whole "who created us ?" plot of Prometheus. However, David is the creator these films is interested in. It's about creation. Not ours though. The xenomorphs....
I find that intriguing and is why my Thumb is up.

The thoughtful, world-building storyline delivers new and interesting heights for the series. Alien: Covenant should have no trouble appealing to new audiences while also pleasing long-time fans. Its one fault is in taking a few minutes too long to get things going in the beginning. At the risk of sounding jaded: in 2017, we have seen the fancy spaceship effects and hyper-sleep stuff before. I really disliked the IMAX version, which was very “in your face” and distracting. (My reaction was similar to the many coming attractions of other “action” films I saw before the main film started. I have seen many other films in IMAX – for example, Doctor Strange – and liked them.) Perhaps Ridley Scott doesn’t “get” IMAX. Regardless, my reaction went from a charitable 5 rating to an enthusiastic 7, but the irritating characters (like Tennessee) and the Walter-David confusion didn’t help my enjoyment the second time. I understand intellectually that we needed characters who were so attracted to each other that they could spend the rest of their lives together as colonists, but the disgruntled misfits in the first Alien film were more fun than these lovey-doveys. But generally the latest film was interesting and, and as a fan who has seen the other films in the series innumerable times, I enjoyed it. Expand

Not as beautifully shot as Prometheus but has a different tone. Ridley Scott never seizes to surprise and amaze me. Covenant is instantly my second favourite Alien movie of all time anway. Very different for any other Alien film. May not be much for Cameron's "Aliens" crowd perhaps, a film which I never cared much for anyway. Covenant seems like a bit of an underrated film already. Yeah almost forgot, Fassbender is phenomenal ofcourse. Don't focus on obvious flaws in the characters of the movie, you might miss the larger picture ;) Nope, not a movie for everyone, clearly. I for one loved it. So there you go... Expand

"Alien: Covenant" falls within the latter two. It's not as mind-blowing as the original, not as much of a rocket ride as "Aliens," but it's no "Alien 3" or "Prometheus." Anyone who has seen any of the previous movies will be entertained but not awed, as there's really nothing new here. Anyone who actually appreciated "Prometheus" will see this as a fairly seamless transition to a faster-paced sequel. For me, this was like going on your favorite amusement park ride for the 100th time. You might still enjoy it, but it doesn't have that same joy or jolt of excitement you felt the first time you sat in the chair and buckled yourself in. The story line is almost a rewrite of the original "Alien," down to the "Let's try to kill the monster this way" ending. The characters are cookie-cutter; you have a Sigourney Weaver clone (the human Sigourney from "Alien," not the superhero of the later flicks), a number of other likeable but gone-too-soon folks, the unexpected stranger, etc. My biggest negative is with the movie's predictability. I figured out the "twist" about 40 minutes in, and hoped I would be wrong. No such luck.

A person sitting near me complained that the movie should have focused more on the race introduced in "Prometheus." That's probably where the next movie (and you know they'll figure out how to do another one) is headed.

Overall, I give this movie a B for entertainment value, a C for storyline, and a C+ for execution. It's not worth a full-priced admission, but it's good as a bonus picture with a Dish Network, DirecTV, Amazon or Netflix account. It's not a wasted day, but it's not one worth being at the top of your To Do list.

After "Prometheus" (which I enjoyed but I thought was ultimately a bit pointless), "Covenant" returns the series to its horror roots. The movie plays to all of the "Alien" series' strengths: believable characters and camaraderie, unbearably tense situations, gross-out horror, and stunning outer space vistas. In addition to being technically impeccable, I appreciated the fact that "Covenant" is a horror movie for adults. Not only does it refuse to water down its violence, it allows the characters to have intelligent discussions without explaining everything they're saying. In our current era of bloodless PG-13 horror and endless exposition for idiots, it was a breath of fresh air. Expand

Disclaimer: I'm a long-time Alien series fan. It's my #1 favourite movie series to date. Yes, including Alien 3 & Resurrection. Does NOT include Alien Vs Predator!

Alien: Covenant does not disappoint. It ties into Prometheus very well and then is peppered with 1979's Alien to bring in some scares and action. The ideas introduced in Prometheus are expounded upon in Covenant through David/Walter. One now needs to ask is "Alien" the creature or really the humanesque AI being developed by Weyland? Ridley Scott shot a beautifully filmed sci-fi epic that kept me enthralled from minute 1 to the end. The only thing lacking now, with Prometheus & Covenant, is there is no character that grabs the audience like Sigourney Weaver's Ripley did back in the Alien franchise heyday. Nonetheless, Covenant deserves to be seen on the big screen and ignore the negative reviews on IMDB (and here) by the wannabe salty critics. Looking forward to the next chapter which Scott said he'd be starting to film in 14 months time.

TheIf you enjoy the tone and feeling of Aliens movies, you will like this movie. If you have issue with what the plot..should or should not be...that is a separate issue and I am fine with the direction Ridley has taken his creation in. The film is in some ways very much like other aliens films in terms of characters getting picked off 1 by 1 etc., but the tone and feeling is just like any other aliens film, and entertains as such, mixed in with a good enough amount of story to keep you wondering. This is a movie, made by writers....they do not have the answers to the universe...no idea what some people are expecting out of an aliens movie. It entertains and also presents some questions, and balances that tension throughout. I would say it was about as good as Prometheus, not as good as the two originals, and overall another solid sequel/prequel. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The sequel to Prometheus opens with a flashback when Weyland succeeded
created a replicant named David. This David that accompanied Weyland to
search the greatest mystery of human kind. At the end of the Prometheus
Elizabeth Shaw is the only survivor along with David that she saved.
many years later, a colony spaceship - Covenant - sent to search an
alternative planet for human kind - along with a replicant crew named
Walter but then an accident caused life casualties include Cap.Jacob
Branson (James Franco) and some colony. The leadership falls to Oram
(Billy Crudup) to lead them all to the paradise planet without give any
chance for the crew to mourn and shows no empathy for Daniels (the
widow). When they catch signal from a hidden planet, Oram decided to
change course - with the official objection from Daniels as the second
highest officer. And so they landed, but still Daniels still feel
uncomfortable for this green planet hide something mysterious. So, Oram
brings his exploration team along to explore and to find the source of
the signal monitored by Upworth,Ricks & Tennesse from the outer.
So,then two of the member secretly infected by pathogen and less then
half hour, they real nightmare begins. In the middle of chaos, David
the revealed to safe them...are they really save? I was a fan of Alien
movies (Only Alien 1979 and Aliens 1986 - the rest Alien?Trash!!!).
Ridley brings out this Alien dark sci fi saga alive back from the very
beginning starts with Prometheus where at the end of the movie there
are only 1 human survivor, Dr.Shaw and she saved David too. In this
sequel to Prometheus, the screenplay put more emotion between main
characters and more of scary horrifying form of aliens such as deadly
pathogen that can turn DNA of the host in less then 1 hour and breeds
new life form from inside it's host body. I really love this new kind
of horrifying alien form, and how Alien:Covenant build the characters
that supposed to be very competent but then easily torn aparts and
treacherous. And Ridley successfully drag audience to follow all the
way to finally acquainted with the alien that the first time Ridley
brought to screen in 1979 (xenomorph) that David called so as the
perfect creation. But, somehow i think that the parasite pathogen that
scattered everywhere in that green horror planet is more scary and more
efficient to breed vicious alien,. And by the way why the rest of the
crews not showing any surprise that they just saved by a person that
looks exactly as Walter? And there is not even conversation between
them and David where he's came from...the connection between him and
the spaceship. But i impressed the landscape shot on the green
mysterious planet..and how perfectly Daniels express her wonder that
they hear not a sound of birds or animal. If this planet has everything
that all living creatures on earth need to start a new beginning...if
this planet is a paradise..why they see nothing but just a sound of
waterfall from afar. What i actually feel about this sequel is that
Ridley bring this Alien saga into a new whole dimension of sci fi
horror...that still left questions unanswered...even since the
Prometheus..why? the big giant bald pale skin hated human?that is a big
question that still running around in my head. And Fasbender
successfully performed as 2 replicant characters at the same time the
sympathetic Walter and the psychopath genius David (psychopath? David
is a robot for haven sake...no words can describe this). Finally, this... Ridley really escalate his Alien saga not just into a deeper and darker alien movie but a step closer bringing Alien as a new legend in the film making history.

Ridley scott and the writers are really trying to extend the Alien univers by taking it at its root. We have here a movie that explore the meaning of being god. Having the right of life and death upon the others. Having such a character as David was pretty unexpected but it feels so obvious now. I'v seen it twice in theater so I was able to really get a bit more objectif about it. The acting is good, nothing pull you out of the story at any moment. The score does perfeclty the job of taking the old songs of jerry goldsmith and reniew it. The general atmosphere of this movie is great. For what's might feel wrong I'd say the visual effect aren't always look the best. They tried to make the alien faster and ferocious by moving at an inhuman speed. The result might make us feel like it's a very ferocious creature but not very believable as we could see in the first Alien movie. It's definitely feel like cg as it is most of the time on screen ( except during the first neomorph attack). I would give it a 7/10 if not so many people would have rated it poorly for wrong reasons.
