It is a "product" of mixed head. There is no final decision about being art or popular one. There are lots of redundant scenes even parts! Maybe it could be a good short film, maybe...

Película algo lenta, con una muy buena ambientación y potencial, pero con una historia demasiado sensilla y esenas algo forzadas. Además el mensaje final de la película no creo que sea del agrado de los amantes de la exploración espacial.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Saw the reviews for this and was really excited for it. But this was dreadful. The story just doesn't make sense. Obviously radio waves just don't exist in this universe! If they did this story wouldn't have been necessary. A guy needs travel all the way to mars to send a voice message to Neptune?? It couldn't have been sent to Mars? Brad Pitt needed to be in a sound proof room to record a message?? He's able to board a rocket as it launches? Obviously G forces don't exist either or Newton's laws of motion for that matter. When is this set?? They had better Luna buggy's in 1970's! A wave capable of power surges billions of miles through space but doesn't effect the source in any way! Ridiculous character reactions ruin the acting too! The most important mission in human history and they pack pitt off on a commercial flight for secrecy?? With a geriatric?? My god. I was actually laughing every few minutes. If this was fantasy sci-fi fine, but this seemed to want to be "realistic". Baah. Space 1999 was more realistic than this. By the end you have to ask what was the point and how are you not up for 3 counts of manslaughter? It gets 1 star for the visuals only. Expand

“Work hard, play later.”

Once a year ever since ‘Gravity’ was released, we seem to get new stories about the voyage of space where certain characters “do not go gentle into that good night.”

I wasn’t wowed over the trailers for Ad Astra, because when you work at a cinema and spent most of your day watching trailers, well trust me when I say this didn’t stand out from the rest. I originally thought it was about saving the world or something like that. For what it didn’t advertise was a slow burn sci-fi movie that’s on the same level as ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and the emotional side as ‘First Man’. A personal story told through a first person narrative about unresolved issues from past relationship.

Basically an art house movie with a huge budget.

‘Ad Astra’ was pretty good. After only seeing it once, I feel that this will grow on me overtime and so far it has. A mixture of both ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ and Terrence Malick movies. While not as great as those two comparisons, but while watching I couldn’t help to be reminded of those two.

There's some beautiful and impressive shots through out the movie, especially when the movie constantly shows you the entire scale of space and planets through the characters journey. The colors adds to environment that oozes with style and has a tranquil feel to it. I think that’s where the Blade Runner vibes really come in. Brilliant cinematography by Hoyte Van Hoytema.

Brad Pitt was terrific as the silent astronaut with tangled mood swings. It’s not an explosive performance, just simple enough for it to be effective. Any other actor would’ve gone big for no other reasons than being overly dramatic and it makes sense for his character to be closed off; similar to Ryan Gosling in ‘First Man’, where his emotional health comes last. You learn very little about his character, as most of his backstory is only in the background for you to piece together the puzzle.

The score was mystical and often eerie at times which helped ties in with the unknown aspects of space. The visual effects are excellent and nearly photorealistic at times - something you come to expect by now with space movies.

I wasn’t too sure about the narration at first, because it was very off putting and a cheap way for the character to express himself. However it sorta grew on me after awhile and some of it was almost rambling with Roy questioning every decision he made.

Now for the issues:

I have no idea why Liv Tyler was in this movie, because she literally does nothing and could have easily been cut out. It felt like a reshoot for some reason.

Remember when I said the visual effects are photorealistic ‘at times’, but that isn’t always the case with certain scenes. There’s a deranged chimpanzee that pops up and it looks really phoney. I think that entire scene could been cut out. I’ve brought up twice about cutting scenes, because I believe if this movie went back to the editing room one more time, then my score would be a lot higher.

There’s a ridiculously and almost laughable scene where Roy (Brad Pitt) steaks into a spaceship that he’s not suppose to be on, and all the astronauts onboard go into a frenzy and accidentally start kill themselves while trying to cease Roy. No joke. Roy dosen’t even do anything as he never intended to hurt them. It was cheap way of making Roy isolated for the rest of the movie. A few years ago I remember reading a horrifying incident that happened to astronaut Luca Parmitano where he reported water inside of his space suit helmet, and nearly become the first astronaut to drown in space. However, Luca remained calm throughout the whole incident despite the odds of him dying being high, but in the end he survived. So it’s really strange seeing these trained astronauts freaking out because came on board.

Overall rating: Out of the whole spectacle, I find the meaning of the movie the most striking. The themes of family, love and abandonment plays a major role in the story. The whole idea of “working hard and playing later” comes with a cost, which is the less time we spend with our loved ones and abandoning everything to pursuit something better out there when in reality the best things in life are right here. When you discover nothing there’s no turing back and no finding your way back. I’ve been thinking about it for awhile now after seeing the movie.

Never underestimate James Gray as a storyteller.

It's a great looking film that can also be pretty dull at points.

This is one of the most visually impressive films of the year. There is just so much gorgeous scenery and special effects. Includes the best looking realization of the moon's surface I've ever seen. The film does a great job of balancing the whiteness or colors of the spacecraft with the darkness of space. The cinematography is also excellent with just some great camera shots.

The movie does a strong job of world building in this near future world where space travel is easier and travel to the moon is pretty routine. The setting is explained naturally without forced exposition.

This is a very deliberately paced movie that focuses too much on the hero's journey for it's own good. This is isn't too much of an issue for the first half of the film as they throw several interesting things at you. However as Pitt's character travels further away from human civilization, scenes get far more drawn out and just plain boring. I had to step away for a few minutes and didn't miss anything.

It doesn't help the movie any that the main story and the hero's journey are all really basic and predictable when you get down to it.

Though I just said how simple his character's arc was, Pitt does a really good job of selling the guy especially since he has his emotions in check for a good part of the film. Though he's not in this much, Jones also does a hell of a job. (Also, this isn't really relevant to the content of the film, but Donald Pleasance is in this and this is the first time I've seen him without facial hair. I think he's a reverse Trebeck in that I actually thinks he looks better without it despite being accustomed to him with the moustache and sometimes beard for years.)

I think this film is more appealing to those you are interested in intellectual films. If you're into pure entertainment, this may not be your thing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. People have compared this to Interstellar and Contact. There is no comparison, as those two movies were immeasurably better.

This movie was advertised to have a “realistic” depiction of space travel. Nope. There was nothing realistic (whatsoever).

In essence, the entire movie can be summed up as: Brad Pitt, a quirky guy, misses dad. Brad Pitt undergoes unrealistic, boring experiences. Brad Pitt finds his dad. Brad Pitt loses his dad. Brad Pitt comes home. Roll end credits.

It’s a boring movie with nothing profound or entertaining about it. No comedy, no action, no compelling imagery, no real story, and nothing reality based about space travel. The other actors the trailer makes seem important are virtually non-existent in the film.

Tommy Lee Jones gets about 6 minutes... 4 of which are repeated videos from decades ago playing on his futuristic iPad. Liv Tyler hets about 2 minutes, all as flashbacks from the past. Donald Sutherland gets 5 minutes, but has a heart attack in the beginning of the movie and doesn’t die... so..(?)

Now, the solitary reason it gets even one star from me (instead of zero) is that, given the character that poor Brad Pitt was given to play, he played it well. The character is ridiculous, but is played well.

Spaceballs and Howard the Duck were better films.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A meandering movie that does nothing interesting. It tries to come off as artistic but in the end is just a two hour long ode to someone's desire to punch their absentee father. The physics make no sense, and neither does the plot. Forgettable, unrealistic, pointless. You are better off skipping this film. A waste of Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee jones. Expand

There were so many actors in this movie that I was surprised to see, actors that I loved in their past shows/movies. Despite a good cast, this movie was ultimately very boring and somewhat anticlimactic. There were undoubtedly some visually striking and beautiful scenes in this movie, but nothing that hasn't been done before and better elsewhere. As far as sci-fi realism goes, this movie is fraught with inaccuracies at every step of Brad Pitt's journey from Earth beyond. Usually, its the scientific inaccuracies that can make a space movie exciting and seem futuristic or otherworldly. In Ad Astra, however, space towers on Earth, antimatter explosions, and magic rockets with unlimited fuel can't bring the heat up on the lukewarm script and storyline viewers (and the cast) are subjected to. How critics and users on here are referring to Ad Astra as "provocative" (CNN), or a "dissertation on the human condition" (hugoferreira), and Pitts performance as "award worthy" (patnian), is honestly inexplicable to me. There really wasn't anything especially provocative in this movie. Furthermore, it would be quite a stretch to claim that the poorly acted montage scene in which Pitt's supposed 72 days in isolation pass in a minute or so, or the rather one dimensional and hardly exposited father-son conflict, constitutes any sort of critique or exploration of the human condition. At the end of the day, was Ad Astra watchable? Yes I suppose so. Was it satisfying, engaging, or especially entertaining? Not really. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
-Solid characters that I found myself fairly invested in.
-Good performances, particularly from Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones.
-Great visuals and atmosphere.
-The way the film portrays space travel is very interesting since it’s very likely that that is what it will actually be like in possibly a decade or so. -The movie is slow paced, but unlike Star Trek: The Motion Picture where it was only made like that to pad out the run time, in this film it works in favor of the story. -The film as a whole feels realistic, which makes it even easier for us to connect to these characters.
-The scene where Tommy Lee Jones’ character, H. Clifford McBride, commits suicide nearly made me tear up, something only a few films in the past have managed to accomplish.

Cons:
-The placement of the scene where Roy, Brad Pitt’s character, is collecting data from the Lima Project I found confusing because it happens after H. Clifford McBride commits suicide and the transition to this scene doesn’t make it clear enough that it’s a flashback. I admit it’s a nitpick, but it left me a little confused when I watched the movie. -While I believe the slow pacing works in the film’s favor as it helps to add suspense to the movie, it may turn off some viewers who are looking for a more fast paced action heavy sci-fi movie, and some of the trailers for this movie make it seem as though this is something like that, when it reality it is slow paced and doesn’t have too much action. -Roy seems a little too devoted to saving his father considering what he knows what he has done to his other crew member and he even straight up tells him he never cared about him or his mother, especially considering how emotionally detached he is portrayed as being in the movie.
-The film’s main core message seems to be one that I think most people already know. It still serves as a good cautionary tale, but it’s still a message I feel like most people are already aware of. -It’s kind of hard to be invested in Liv Tyler’s character because we see very little of her throughout the movie. We only really care about her because Roy cares about her, and that’s not really a good thing.

Final verdict: I enjoyed Ad Astra. I have a few small issues with it here and there, but it is overall a well made film that I would recommend checking out. Just be sure you know what you are getting into when going to see it.

Bad Astra.

I'm am still getting grief from family and friends for subjecting them to this film. My response is "I did due diligence. I check the Metacritic critic score: it was fine!" This movie is the Pearl Harbor of outer space. But at least that film had a theme (A Japanese sneak attack on an American Love Triangle).

This looked like a film whose individual scenes were submitted filmed and spliced together by random people with only a cursory attempt to knit a story. "Does the timeline seem to go forward? Good enough." Well not random people: writers without an iota of science understanding. I found more coherence in the random shots of people in a commercial doing those things that the advertise prescription medicine will get them back to doing.

It did have some great looking but nonsensical imagery.

Bad Astra.

Acting: 7/10 alright acting from a fairly impressive cast, but what they were delivering was fairly cringe-y or dull at times.
Plot: 2/10 vapid space tropes that lead nowhere. Plot-holes that are laughably confusing and inexcusable. Random made up unscientific garbage sprinkled everywhere. And lastly, random sequences that could easily have been built up to something else, but completely ignored.
Visuals: 5/10 a few interesting scenes, edits, and vfx moments, ultimately nothing all too impressive or deserving lavish. Direction: 5/10 while the direction was cohesive (for the most part), the story left much to be desired.

Conclusion: Extremely unimaginative derivative plot with very familiar space tropes that seem to drag on endlessly in a meandering slow paced space spectacle (without the spectacle). The complete lack of intrigue and story depth was astonishing in juxtaposition to the major critical praise this movie is receiving. Shallow characters following monotonic plot devices that don't drive home any sort of cohesive themes other than that space is dangerous and people go crazy in solitude (which have been explored in basically EVERY space movie ever made). Left the movie theatre having wondered if i even watched a movie, or a poor collage of scenic space shots and advertisements for another greater sci fi movie with better writing. There was hardly a journey, hardly a destination, and the melancholy undertones were all too familiar the entire course of the movie.
Shorter conclusion: Imagine Apollo 13, interstellar, and gravity all had a lovechild that came out neither as interesting, nor paced as well as either of them individually. As if all those movies had their souls torn out, and fused into a travesty of unoriginal writing and story telling.

I have never been in space obviously, but the imagery and procedures in this movie are everything I have ever imagined it might be like. In this case, the realism of this movie is captivating. And the few twists that this movie presents are well earned and paid off. The soundtrack by Max Richter is perfect for a space film, and I can't wait for it to be available for purchase. Nothing happenes in this movie. It’s the weakest story. Brad accepts a role where the character’s superpower is they he shows no emotion. This is the opposite of good acting.

I wasn’t enamoured with Intersteller or 2001: A Space Odyssey and before you attack me I’m not hating on those movies, they were good, they looked amazing but I didn’t love them. My idea of a good space movie usually features a xenomorph and Sigourney Weaver but each to their own. I liked Ad Astra, I found the story intriguing and we got another great performance from Brad Pitt this year so kudos Brad for picking the right movies for a change. It seems many people are bored by space movies and that’s fine, maybe Ad Astra isn’t for you but don’t go hating on it just because you found the story too slow. It certainly isn’t deserving of some of the harsh reviews it’s receiving online.

Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) is sent on a mission to the outer edges of the solar system to find his father (Tommy Lee Jones) who went missing on a mission 30 years ago. Gives us something a little different than your typical “let’s explore space” movie with scenes full of tension. I wasn’t always sure what was going to happen next and I was fully engaged with the story. As with a lot of space movies it’s very pretty to look at with a beautiful soundtrack to go with it. Music is essential for any film but space movies particularly needs a memorable score to compliment it. Ad Astra is a lot more emotional than I ever expected it to be and you may leave the cinema feeling sadder than when you went in but it’s a movie and it’s going to make you feel something or else it didn’t do its job. Recommended for all you Brad Pitt and/or Sci-fi fans.

This film was advertised as an adventure in space when in reality it is a drama that happens to astronauts on their journey through space, and u know something? That's not bad and works most of the time. When Ad Astra works, it flies beyond the stars masterfully commanded by a Brad Pitt who may be Oscar-worthy, but unfortunately the film finds few plot holes along the way, which avoids mediocrely or without great depth, just to focus more on the emotional weight of the story (some script failures and in history if), such as the presence of pirates, a little adventure on Mars, but mainly the monkeys (really ??? ?). I do not doubt that James Gray is one of the most interesting contemporary directors in the current Hollywood market, but this movie leaves the viewer wishing more about a proposal that could be something better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ad Astra was fairly good but not excellent. I found the story derivative of Sunshine, yet with less effects and quality. The acting was just ok. I didn't think the emotions were correctly transmitted by the movie and the dialogues. The effects were fine but since Gravity and Interstellar, it was lacking some degree of realism in terms of lighting, clarity and camera works. The motivation of the father and why he couldn't fix a problem, and cut communications, makes absolutely no sens. It's a big plot hole for me. I really like the moon sections the best. I give 60%. It's a well done movie but the story wasn't that solid or logical. Expand

The lackluster, deadpan dramatic performance of Brad Pitt (who really should stick to comedy), combined with sluggish pacing, underwhelming special effects and a poorly written, poorly executed script, leave viewers wanting for much more than what this package delivers. What's worse, though, is that there were ample opportunities to salvage this story and to take it in surprising, refreshing and enlightening directions that would have made for a much, much better picture. Pay no heed to the critics on this one; all hype aside, it's a major disappointment and far from the epic masterpiece status that has been so undeservedly lavished upon it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bad Astra; worst sci-fi movie of all time?

Basically this film steals from multiple movies to create the most terribly disjointed and inane plot that I've ever had the misfortune to see. From Last Man it steals it's depiction of Neal Armstrong and renames that character Roy McBride. From 2001 it steals the apes... (yes, there are apes in the film...) and the lunar transit scenes and from Guardians of the Galaxy it steals space pirates... (yeah, space pirates!) from Gravity it steals the space ships, space suits and tether lines. From Alien it steals the distress call... (see apes above). From Interstellar it steals the music and from Stars Wars it steals the son must kill father to destroy the deadly space station plot line. From the Red Green show, it steals the duct tape...(yes, really!) From Soylent Green it steals Saul's final moments (AKA "calming rooms") and from Blade Runner 2049 it steals the Baseline Psych Test... From 2010 it steals the shock-wave and from Independence Day it steals the bomb... Donald Sutherland simply reprises his role from JFK while Liv Tyler's scenes were just ripped off from LOTR. This movie is an insult to the intelligence of the audience and reveals just how much contempt Gray and/or the producers have for their audience. Basically this movie is a Voight-Kampff Test that ferrets out Replicant critics when they write glowing reviews for terrible movies. I gave the film a 0 out of 10 which I'm happy to do because on most review sites I can't give it a zero. If you watch it, treat it as a comedy and you'll have great fun. My wife and I compared notes after the movie and both realized that we were afraid during the movie that we somehow missed something that caused the critics to give it good reviews... then we laughed so hard that it was hard to stop because it really was terrible and it was the critics who were afraid to say so.

It is a visually beautiful film, Pitt does a fine job or acting, the concept is fine, but the space experience is silly, and the relationships are just plot driven. We really learn nothing about anyone in the story including Pitt, except that he thinks he should trust people more and wishes he could - not exactly profound ground there. What I would guess is that the writers were smart enough to know that what they were writing was dumbed-down, and the science was not even close to anything that would not inspire a real astronaut to laugh out loud at most of it, but they figured the average movie goer would not notice and would love - macho man goes to neptune. But it is an expensive missed opportunity to make a great movie just to make money. Expand

As someone who loves these kinds of movies (the Space genre,or the Experience Genre for my taste. This one breaks the barrier, though),this was probably my favourite kind of Space Movie. I love that the best Space Movies out there now are all about Daddy Issues, between this and Interstellar. Don't let the Disney/Fox merger trailers fool you into thinking it's an Action Movie, because, while this is a Space Opera (and an Action Movie for 2 Seconds) in a way, this is (at its heart) a Character-driven film. Oh,and it's also slow, but should I even care? (we'll get there later)
I mean it as "this is a Character film",because we only follow him,his experiences in Space and his struggles in life, while he's travelling his ass over the stars, amidst a Future that I would perfectly picture in my head, and a big-ass " Save The Universe" plot. Brad Pitt shows his all in this,as he plays a Character that I can kind of relate to (with lines like "I talked when I should've listened" or "They're using me") in terms of charisma, movements or even wide range of emotions. When he freaks out,he WILL freak out. There's also a cute subplot about him always being committed to the next mission and how he should stop. Good stuff.
This is also handled by some great Production Design. Hoyte Van Hoytema (the Photographer of several Nolan movies) films this and it looked beautiful from the first second. Seriously,I hated myself for remembering this didn't come out in IMAX (but Yesterday sure did, because why not),because it could've benefited A LOT from some Premium Cinema experiences. Same for the Score,as it fuels up the narrative and makes it creepy or tension-full at times. This is the one where I feel like Lorne Balfe will get the Oscar. You know he's on his way NOW.
And the Art Direction is a standout here. Never has Space looked this beautiful and stunning since 2001 A Space Odyssey. Oh,and let's discuss the Action Sequence on the Moon. That is history right there,80 seconds or less, and I'm glad they pulled the heels hardcore and went full Fury Road, between Solar Panel crashes,Gravity throws, and Laser Guns (?!?),which appears to be a common theme in this movie, and I'm glad it is.
Although, had it not been for a Plot Convenience moment, then it would've been perfect. Yeah,it's emotional and all,but it's still Plot Convenience.
And the other flaws i'll mention aren't in relation the movie,so take them as rants about the average Audience.
Are we (no,not me. THEY) now acknowledging slow movies exist and are boring to the average consumer who goes to the movies? Disney/Fox merger trailers aside,go see Costumes Abbey or Abominable (next movie for me...God) if you're that bored with Space Shenanigans.
And if you want to go see this, please support this. I'm struggling to write a coherent review for it (and usually studios like 20th Fox are crowded for Franchise craze) but I'm telling you. It's failing to make its money back,so please. Go see this and stop supporting movies like "Oscar Nominee for Best Costumes" and "Animated Yeti". Ok,Universal rant over.
Space is scary and sad,but it rocks. Hell yeah it ROCKS.

Set in a vague “not so distant future” where mankind has reached the edge of the solar system in Neptune (as Pluto is no longer thought of as a planet) but remains unable to reach into the intricacies of the soul for lack of volition and surpluses of fear. The movie moves slowly but surely into the protagonist’s acceptance of his universal needs, doubts and longings amidst a mostly gloomy atmosphere accomplished through tense and low music, sparse sound effects, and long voice-overs. It takes a nuclear explosion for the protagonist to shake off his reluctance to bond with the world thus transforming himself into a new shape of the father figure. Also, the story is full of plot holes, filled with the usual ploy of moving the story along by having supposedly smart people doing really stupid things, and some parts of the story that simply don't seem to have any rhyme or reason for being there. I don't want to give any spoiler regarding the last point, but I was waiting for one incident that occurs during the story to be linked somehow to the conclusion (and it could have been with a little screen writing) - but that never happened. Largely boring punctuated by mostly ludicrous adventures. I usually like character studies and relationship movies, but in this case, I never cared about the major characters.

Heroes - dummies, involvement in action - 0. Experiences for the heroes - 0, because you do not know them. Musical accompaniment (everyone remembered interstellar) - I'm not sure what the music was at all. Disclosure of characters - there is no such thing. Bottom line: "sterile." Grab a pillow. NASA needs a two hour commercial for some reason. 4. Men in future have soo much toxic masculinity that they are bad, future man bad! 5. It's a character film which touches the human condition itself. This film is a dissertation on the human condition, on the impact of loneliness in a person, on the scars parents leave in a son/daughter, on how it influences one selves choices, on redemption itself and how we should let go something the pulls us down and embrace what pulls us up, on how we shouldn't search for answers on others but within ourselves and at the same time help each others carry our burdens. It's an heavy film filled with symbolism and metaphors, that uses the sci-fi and space exploration genre to ease the topic into the audience. Masterfully directed with an outstanding Brad Pitt performance lifting him up to the top. A must see film, Ad Astra - "To the Stars". Enjoy it. Expand

It’s a slow burn that has an emotionally distant lead character...and that’s basically poison to general audiences. With that being said, a lot of people also won’t like it purely because of the story. Like I said, it’s slow and it’s more about Roy’s journey to finding that emotion he lacks in the beginning. It’s about a man and his desire to have a relationship with his father. Space travel is not the true focus here. I thought it was extraordinarily well done and honestly I can’t find much that I don’t like about it. It also features the best cinematography a film has had in a couple of years. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Slow, dragging, and more than a little depressing. The effects are good and Brad Pitt does a great job playing an emotionally compromised astronaut who turns out to be bad luck to a lot of the folks he comes in contact with. The psychological check-ins his character has to regularly endure make you wonder if he’s just playing the game or what his real motives might be, while at the same time giving hints of a fascist government pulling the strings from back home. It does show us a few things no space movie I’ve seen has shown us before, including: a person parachuting down from an low-orbit antenna station, a high-speed moon buggy chase, a unique fight scene in space, an astronaut swimming underwater in his space suit, and the first space surfing I’ve seen since Dark Star. Overall, not a favorite or something I’ll need to see again. Expand

The ending of the movie was nothing more than anticlimactic let down, not that there really was any climax to the movie. i went in having zero expectations and was horribly let down. such big names tragically under utilized. All Negatives aside, the visuals and score in this movie were phenomenal. The realism of this sci fi movie was believable, left me excited and wanting more. I think this movie had a lot of potential but wasn't able to deliver a complete product. Every character interaction was extremely surface level and almost seemed completely irrelevant. there seemed to be this urgency to jump around from situation, to interaction, as if they were in a rush to jam this 12 hour movie into the allotted time yet there was no payoff. I would recommend this as a lazy rainy Sunday watch, if theres NOTHING else to peak your interest. wouldn't spend money on it. Catch it on TV. Expand

The rest is filled with more holes than a sponge. For instance, it is understandable that people sent in space have to be mentally stable, but to the point of repeating "psychological evaluations" at every turn seems an overstretch.

The fundamental background elements of the story are wrong, the physics is wrong, the time aspects are wrong (8 light hours separate mars to neptune, expecting an answer in less than 30 seconds is what?). The premise that we would be better equipped to detect alien life at this distance from earth is ridiculous and with high res pictures of those planets too (why, oh why?). No speaking of space monkeys exploding in vacuum (this one was hilarious) or having the capability to destroy a vacuum rated visor repaired magically with duct tape (why?). Going through a debris filled space with a simple shield after jumping from a rotating antenna (with precision to reach and land perfectly on a ship. The nuclear explosion used as a mechanism to propel a ship (think of a dumbed down 2010). I forgot about the space pirates and a lot of other nonsense. 79 days from Mars to Neptune, at a constant speed would represent, give or take 0.2% the speed of light (during which there is no "surge"). Let's forget the acceleration or decceleration, the amount of fuel required, the required size of the spacecraft, etc. The movie is utterly nihilistic as the message is clearly: "there is no Earth 2, we are alone, any endeavour to leave earth is futile and dangerous".

This movie deserves a zero given the plot holes, inconsistencies, and the utter nonsense it carries.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was so hopeful, as movie went on it got worse and worse, I stopped watching and hour and half into it, didn’t really care how it ended. It was THAT bad! This movie failed on so many levels... 1. Brad Pitt not believable= worse performance ever, constant boohoo me was killing me as the plot was heavily focused on his daddy issues.. enough already...his constant whining throughout the movies was nauseating ....and On top of that he just wasn’t believable 2. Writing was the worse= the concept of the movie was the Surge, writers didn’t expand on that instead focused on Brads father issues...Lack of real science = writers didn’t consult with NASA or MIT scientist before writing this awful script ,
A. Brads dad somehow magically survives in space for a decade! How he gets water and food we don’t know....

B. ...they send a message to his dad in Neptune from Mars, he responds right away...it takes way longer than couple of minutes for message to get transmitted..

C. The Cargo space ship responds to mayday, how on earth does space ship just stop in the middle of traveling ? You can’t just stop it when ever you want! D. ...the scene of him flying through Neptune ..with a shield!!!! E.Brad claims the side of the rocket while it is firing, he magically gets into the spaceship before it launches! He would be smoked from heat gasses of the rocket! F.....and he rides a nuclear blast all the way from Neptune to Earth landing just right!!!!!!!! A joke..., so many holes scientifically that it’s redicilous, any scientist watching this would have laughed.

I liked the moon, which is only a stopover for the other planets? Here Mars! The battle without real objective is a pity, but very well done. The special effects are magical because you believe in them from start to finish. A story about the loneliness of a man to join his father who had taken the path of loneliness earlier than him. And an experience feedback at the end of the film draws our own story!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of those times where I just can't understand how the critics score was so high and it causes one to wonder if a price was paid to get those ratings. The audience ratings seem to be more aligned with reality this time. This was an unbelievably bad movie. The acting was bland, the pacing was off, and the story was riddled with so many plot holes and inconsistencies, it's obvious something went haywire in the entire script to production process. It almost appears that a full script was written for an engaging space epic, so big time talent was then attached. Then somewhere half-way through production, budget was severely cut, the script was gutted, and powers that be went in for just a quick money grab based on the attached talent. The lawn chairs on the space rovers should have been our warning to quit and save ourselves another hour of agony. The critics seemed to be impressed enough with the visuals to carry the movie, but it just doesn’t. I’ve seen better visuals Syfy channel movies. Brad Pitts acting wasn’t horrible, but the critics again grossly overstated the quality of the performance. He read his lines accurately, often in a “literal” sense off his script it seems… that was it, nothing earth shattering. Performances from other big time talent were just woefully underused and underserved. Again it seems to be the case where critics and audiences are watching two very different movies, and I just don’t understand how this can be, other than some sort of under the table bribing. As crass and ridiculous as that sounds, it’s a more logical and sensible story than that of Ad Astra itself. Expand

-
"Ad Astra" is a cigarette hard to smoke but is also an elegant one. Independently the influences that the movie has, it can be noticed the powerful hand of Hoyte Van Hoytema and the intention of presenting his part of the project with integrity and neatness. Hoytema is an erudite capable of picturing and visualizing interstellar landscapes that very few on this planet could imagine. That is the biggest delight of the movie. When it's about observing the panorama, contemplating the distance and the elements that have the visual layers such as the color and the architecture, "Ad Astra" is a great success. But there is a big obstacle. The scrip, written by Gray, crumbles all the potential in the film. The essence of the movie probes between Roy’s journey in search of his father, his conception of life and the obsession of the father with extraterrestrial life. The scrip gives too much existentialism to the voice of Roy and a lot of weight to the father's obsession. Roy is someone so overwhelmed by the heaviness of his loneliness that his narrative becomes repetitive and drags the public into a never-ending speech of "Who Am I and Why I Can't Feel Something?" to a point of tedium. On the other side, the father's obsessions are absurd and irrational, and even when some behaviors are justified while the journey, they simply add monotony to the scenes that Hoytema worked so hard to idealize. In that aspect, I'm sad to say that there was not an important impulse of acting in the movie. It is evident that Brad Pitt compress his own acting to achieve the character, and when he tries to break his own helmet, the merit that can be given to the few tears that he couldn't hold in is too little. Not even Tommy Lee Jones or the five minutes on the screen of Ruth Negga add something to the dramatic. Taking the visuals out, "Ad Astra" is one more intention of promoting reflection in a public that has seen characters getting lost and finding themselves in more reasonable ways. I believe that James Gray's mistake was telling about the life of a man who was not living it.

Coming into a genre well representedAd Astra is a daring story of exploration, not only space but our very self, this film deals with a deep-seated urge humans always had, a question that lingered in the back of our minds, are we alone? Coming into a genre well represented in the last decade by many great films, Ad Astra doesn't necessarily overwhelm but it managed to tell a well written and executed narrative in a very minimalistic approach, as you watch the film, you notice that it doesn't focus on the scientific details, it strives to address a higher meaning and that's the very core of the movie, it succeeded to make me invest myself into the story, granted, it is very easy for me to do so as I find the idea of the exploration of the universe extremely fascinating.
Pitt's performance here is amazing, his rendition of a stoic astronaut that represses so much of his problems gives an unparalleled grip to the story, his scenes with the great Lee Jones are proof of that.
Contrary to what might this film leads you to believe, Ad Astra is not about the exploration of space, it explores human nature and our reaction to hardships and pain, I very much loved it.
