I liked the moon, which is only a stopover for the other planets? Here Mars! The battle without real objective is a pity, but very well done. The special effects are magical because you believe in them from start to finish. A story about the loneliness of a man to join his father who had taken the path of loneliness earlier than him. And an experience feedback at the end of the film draws our own story!

Un nouveau film pour sujet "Mars" et les alentours. Un peut long.. Ce film est magique. J'ai aimé la lune qui n'est qu'une escale pour les autres planètes ? Ici Mars ! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a beautiful film with great acting. I love the feel and tone. The climax was terrible for me. Heavy-handed and preachy. The first thing I said about this film out loud was, "I am profoundly disappointed." I prayed there would be an ambiguous ending, but nope. They hit you over the head with the "message."
-
"Ad Astra" is a cigarette hard to smoke but is also an elegant one. Independently the influences that the movie has, it can be noticed the powerful hand of Hoyte Van Hoytema and the intention of presenting his part of the project with integrity and neatness. Hoytema is an erudite capable of picturing and visualizing interstellar landscapes that very few on this planet could imagine. That is the biggest delight of the movie. When it's about observing the panorama, contemplating the distance and the elements that have the visual layers such as the color and the architecture, "Ad Astra" is a great success. But there is a big obstacle. The scrip, written by Gray, crumbles all the potential in the film. The essence of the movie probes between Roy’s journey in search of his father, his conception of life and the obsession of the father with extraterrestrial life. The scrip gives too much existentialism to the voice of Roy and a lot of weight to the father's obsession. Roy is someone so overwhelmed by the heaviness of his loneliness that his narrative becomes repetitive and drags the public into a never-ending speech of "Who Am I and Why I Can't Feel Something?" to a point of tedium. On the other side, the father's obsessions are absurd and irrational, and even when some behaviors are justified while the journey, they simply add monotony to the scenes that Hoytema worked so hard to idealize. In that aspect, I'm sad to say that there was not an important impulse of acting in the movie. It is evident that Brad Pitt compress his own acting to achieve the character, and when he tries to break his own helmet, the merit that can be given to the few tears that he couldn't hold in is too little. Not even Tommy Lee Jones or the five minutes on the screen of Ruth Negga add something to the dramatic. Taking the visuals out, "Ad Astra" is one more intention of promoting reflection in a public that has seen characters getting lost and finding themselves in more reasonable ways. I believe that James Gray's mistake was telling about the life of a man who was not living it.

It’s a slow burner, favouring a sedately-paced 121-minute runtime to explore the fragility of the human condition, but that is not to say it lacks entertainment. There are a handful of truly exhilarating set-pieces set against the backdrop of planet-to-planet travel, filled with moments of true horror and simultaneous exuberance. Gray’s odyssey is a member of a rare coterie of intellectual science-fiction movies that exist to challenge the parameters of the genre it finds itself in; to be intelligent and also offer spectacle. It may not be for everyone, but by God is it an experience to remember. Expand

It's a character film which touches the human condition itself. This film is a dissertation on the human condition, on the impact of loneliness in a person, on the scars parents leave in a son/daughter, on how it influences one selves choices, on redemption itself and how we should let go something the pulls us down and embrace what pulls us up, on how we shouldn't search for answers on others but within ourselves and at the same time help each others carry our burdens. It's an heavy film filled with symbolism and metaphors, that uses the sci-fi and space exploration genre to ease the topic into the audience. Masterfully directed with an outstanding Brad Pitt performance lifting him up to the top. A must see film, Ad Astra - "To the Stars". Enjoy it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
-Solid characters that I found myself fairly invested in.
-Good performances, particularly from Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones.
-Great visuals and atmosphere.
-The way the film portrays space travel is very interesting since it’s very likely that that is what it will actually be like in possibly a decade or so. -The movie is slow paced, but unlike Star Trek: The Motion Picture where it was only made like that to pad out the run time, in this film it works in favor of the story. -The film as a whole feels realistic, which makes it even easier for us to connect to these characters.
-The scene where Tommy Lee Jones’ character, H. Clifford McBride, commits suicide nearly made me tear up, something only a few films in the past have managed to accomplish.

Cons:
-The placement of the scene where Roy, Brad Pitt’s character, is collecting data from the Lima Project I found confusing because it happens after H. Clifford McBride commits suicide and the transition to this scene doesn’t make it clear enough that it’s a flashback. I admit it’s a nitpick, but it left me a little confused when I watched the movie. -While I believe the slow pacing works in the film’s favor as it helps to add suspense to the movie, it may turn off some viewers who are looking for a more fast paced action heavy sci-fi movie, and some of the trailers for this movie make it seem as though this is something like that, when it reality it is slow paced and doesn’t have too much action. -Roy seems a little too devoted to saving his father considering what he knows what he has done to his other crew member and he even straight up tells him he never cared about him or his mother, especially considering how emotionally detached he is portrayed as being in the movie.
-The film’s main core message seems to be one that I think most people already know. It still serves as a good cautionary tale, but it’s still a message I feel like most people are already aware of. -It’s kind of hard to be invested in Liv Tyler’s character because we see very little of her throughout the movie. We only really care about her because Roy cares about her, and that’s not really a good thing.

Final verdict: I enjoyed Ad Astra. I have a few small issues with it here and there, but it is overall a well made film that I would recommend checking out. Just be sure you know what you are getting into when going to see it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. People have compared this to Interstellar and Contact. There is no comparison, as those two movies were immeasurably better.

This movie was advertised to have a “realistic” depiction of space travel. Nope. There was nothing realistic (whatsoever).

In essence, the entire movie can be summed up as: Brad Pitt, a quirky guy, misses dad. Brad Pitt undergoes unrealistic, boring experiences. Brad Pitt finds his dad. Brad Pitt loses his dad. Brad Pitt comes home. Roll end credits.

It’s a boring movie with nothing profound or entertaining about it. No comedy, no action, no compelling imagery, no real story, and nothing reality based about space travel. The other actors the trailer makes seem important are virtually non-existent in the film.

Tommy Lee Jones gets about 6 minutes... 4 of which are repeated videos from decades ago playing on his futuristic iPad. Liv Tyler hets about 2 minutes, all as flashbacks from the past. Donald Sutherland gets 5 minutes, but has a heart attack in the beginning of the movie and doesn’t die... so..(?)

Now, the solitary reason it gets even one star from me (instead of zero) is that, given the character that poor Brad Pitt was given to play, he played it well. The character is ridiculous, but is played well.

Spaceballs and Howard the Duck were better films.

“Work hard, play later.”

Once a year ever since ‘Gravity’ was released, we seem to get new stories about the voyage of space where certain characters “do not go gentle into that good night.”

I wasn’t wowed over the trailers for Ad Astra, because when you work at a cinema and spent most of your day watching trailers, well trust me when I say this didn’t stand out from the rest. I originally thought it was about saving the world or something like that. For what it didn’t advertise was a slow burn sci-fi movie that’s on the same level as ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and the emotional side as ‘First Man’. A personal story told through a first person narrative about unresolved issues from past relationship.

Basically an art house movie with a huge budget.

‘Ad Astra’ was pretty good. After only seeing it once, I feel that this will grow on me overtime and so far it has. A mixture of both ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ and Terrence Malick movies. While not as great as those two comparisons, but while watching I couldn’t help to be reminded of those two.

There's some beautiful and impressive shots through out the movie, especially when the movie constantly shows you the entire scale of space and planets through the characters journey. The colors adds to environment that oozes with style and has a tranquil feel to it. I think that’s where the Blade Runner vibes really come in. Brilliant cinematography by Hoyte Van Hoytema.

Brad Pitt was terrific as the silent astronaut with tangled mood swings. It’s not an explosive performance, just simple enough for it to be effective. Any other actor would’ve gone big for no other reasons than being overly dramatic and it makes sense for his character to be closed off; similar to Ryan Gosling in ‘First Man’, where his emotional health comes last. You learn very little about his character, as most of his backstory is only in the background for you to piece together the puzzle.

The score was mystical and often eerie at times which helped ties in with the unknown aspects of space. The visual effects are excellent and nearly photorealistic at times - something you come to expect by now with space movies.

I wasn’t too sure about the narration at first, because it was very off putting and a cheap way for the character to express himself. However it sorta grew on me after awhile and some of it was almost rambling with Roy questioning every decision he made.

Now for the issues:

I have no idea why Liv Tyler was in this movie, because she literally does nothing and could have easily been cut out. It felt like a reshoot for some reason.

Remember when I said the visual effects are photorealistic ‘at times’, but that isn’t always the case with certain scenes. There’s a deranged chimpanzee that pops up and it looks really phoney. I think that entire scene could been cut out. I’ve brought up twice about cutting scenes, because I believe if this movie went back to the editing room one more time, then my score would be a lot higher.

There’s a ridiculously and almost laughable scene where Roy (Brad Pitt) steaks into a spaceship that he’s not suppose to be on, and all the astronauts onboard go into a frenzy and accidentally start kill themselves while trying to cease Roy. No joke. Roy dosen’t even do anything as he never intended to hurt them. It was cheap way of making Roy isolated for the rest of the movie. A few years ago I remember reading a horrifying incident that happened to astronaut Luca Parmitano where he reported water inside of his space suit helmet, and nearly become the first astronaut to drown in space. However, Luca remained calm throughout the whole incident despite the odds of him dying being high, but in the end he survived. So it’s really strange seeing these trained astronauts freaking out because came on board.

Overall rating: Out of the whole spectacle, I find the meaning of the movie the most striking. The themes of family, love and abandonment plays a major role in the story. The whole idea of “working hard and playing later” comes with a cost, which is the less time we spend with our loved ones and abandoning everything to pursuit something better out there when in reality the best things in life are right here. When you discover nothing there’s no turing back and no finding your way back. I’ve been thinking about it for awhile now after seeing the movie.

Never underestimate James Gray as a storyteller.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Another bloated, over-produced let down in an era of bloated, over produced letdowns. This movie wants to be everything, but winds up being a muddled pile of nothing.

Brad Pitt is a fine actor and he does his best, but the story is ungodly awful. I realize this is sci-fi and we are suspending belief, but they have asked an awful lot of us here.

The main premise is that a guy who has been traveling space for almost 30 years (unheard from for 16 years, supposedly dead) is parked outside Neptune and is firing life-ending energy blasts at Earth. This guy is Brad Pitt's dad and they recruit him to get kill/retrieve/stop him. Okay, cute premise.

Brad then needs to go to the moon (flew commercial, terrible scene), then Mars (3 days trip, goofy side story), then to Neptune. The trip to Neptune takes 63 days, if I recall. So, a madman is out there on Neptune, we can go get him in 2 months, and they wait 16 years? Granted, the energy surges just started, but still... wouldn't you want to follow up?

Sorry for being glib, but the movie itself is glib. It is filled with empty emotion, meaningless action sequences, and long stretches of nothing. It has no identity. It desperately wants to be Apocalypse Now, but it falls woefully short. Wait for the streaming release.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Saw the reviews for this and was really excited for it. But this was dreadful. The story just doesn't make sense. Obviously radio waves just don't exist in this universe! If they did this story wouldn't have been necessary. A guy needs travel all the way to mars to send a voice message to Neptune?? It couldn't have been sent to Mars? Brad Pitt needed to be in a sound proof room to record a message?? He's able to board a rocket as it launches? Obviously G forces don't exist either or Newton's laws of motion for that matter. When is this set?? They had better Luna buggy's in 1970's! A wave capable of power surges billions of miles through space but doesn't effect the source in any way! Ridiculous character reactions ruin the acting too! The most important mission in human history and they pack pitt off on a commercial flight for secrecy?? With a geriatric?? My god. I was actually laughing every few minutes. If this was fantasy sci-fi fine, but this seemed to want to be "realistic". Baah. Space 1999 was more realistic than this. By the end you have to ask what was the point and how are you not up for 3 counts of manslaughter? It gets 1 star for the visuals only. Expand

A very intelligent and fascinating film that is bound to get some Oscar buzz around it. The acting in the film is great, the story is awesome and the world the film creates is absolutely outstanding.

Interstellar with an inner monologue. Great performances and beautiful visuals that are held back by a few minor plot and pacing issues. It feels longer than it's two hour run time.

Despite some absurd diversions (chase scene! horror scene! shoot-out scene!), this is a quality science-fiction narrative

Hoping to step into the lineage of such esoteric science-fiction films as 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Solyaris (1972), Ad Astra is, first and foremost, a mainstream Hollywood movie wherein the demand for crowd-pleasing content clashes with the desire for esotericism. This is manifested in the form of an overly convenient resolution and some of the most ludicrous narrative diversions since the abomination that was Star Wars: The Last Jedi (space pirates! enraged simians! shoot-out!). Which is not to say that I disliked the film – I didn't; even if the narrative never manages to get beyond Heart of Darkness in space and the script relies far too heavily on a sub-Terrence Malick voiceover. The craft on display is exceptional and the story is thought-provoking, with some spectacular visuals. But it could have been so much better.

In the near future, a series of energy surges originating near Neptune leave much of Earth without power. 29 years previously, H. Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), left Earth with the Lima Project, a mission aimed at establishing contact with alien civilisations. Travelling to the same region near Neptune from which the surges are now emanating, 16 years into the mission, all contact was lost. SpaceCom presumed the crew dead, but now they fear that a possibly unhinged Clifford could be behind the surges. And so Maj. Roy McBride (Brad Pitt), Clifford's son, is to travel to a secure long-range communications base on Mars and record a message for Clifford in the hopes he might respond.

Written by James Gray and Ethan Gross, and directed by Gray, Ad Astra wastes no time in tying us rigidly to Roy's perspective; it opens with a POV shot from inside his helmet, and the first words we hear are him speaking in voiceover. This sets up the narrative to come, as Roy remains the sole focaliser throughout. The fact that the film is set amongst the stars, but remains always tied to Roy's perception allows Gray to fashion a narrative that's both massive in scope yet emotionally intimate. He's aided in this by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, whose gorgeous 35mm celluloid photography captures the overwhelming scale, but also frequently frames Pitt in tight close-ups.

Initially played as emotionally closed off ("I've been trained to compartmentalise my emotions"), Roy's stoicism slowly starts to erode as his mission begins to go wrong. Pitt's performance shuns emotional grandstanding, and is terrifically modulated and minimalist, using the lack of outward emotion to inform the character's emotional beats, relying on subtlety and nuanced gesture.

Thematically, Ad Astra is the story of two men obsessed with their profession to the detriment of all else, and like most of Gray's films, it's heavily androcentric, as are its most obvious narrative influences – Heart of Darkness (1899) and Apocalypse Now (1979). Within this, an especially interesting theme is commercialism - Roy takes a Virgin America shuttle to the moon, whilst an exterior shot of a lunar base shows signs for Applebee's, DHL, and Subway. And since the moon is now so like Earth, it's blighted by many of the same issues as Earth; crime, political division, materialism. Indeed, in VO, Roy notes the moon has become a "re-creation of what we're running from on Earth".

However, for all these positives, there are some significant problems. Firstly, there are three ridiculous pseudo-action scenes. The third, at least, is the springboard for the second half of the movie, but it remains a monumentally silly way to advance the plot. The first two scenes, however, serve no such purpose; they lead nowhere, reveal nothing about the character, and have no connection to the esoteric themes found elsewhere.

Another problem is the overly neat finale, which I believe was a reshoot after test audiences responded poorly to the original ending. However, the originally scripted ending made a lot more sense and was thematically fascinating. The other big problem is the VO. Obviously intended to function in much the same way as Willard's in Apocalypse Now, the problem is that most of the time, it's describing something we can see on screen. Pitt's performance is strong enough that the VO is unnecessary, and it's hugely distracting. By the half-way stage, I was sick of Roy's cod-philosophical ramblings that come across like someone trying and failing to imitate Malick.

With all that said, however, it's a testament to the story that despite these hurdles, I still enjoyed the film. The manner in which Gray juxtaposes an intimate tone with massive themes is impressive, and Pitt gives a strong performance. In essence, Ad Astra is a fable about the importance of human connection, played out against the backdrop of the infinite, and despite some significant problems, it's well worth checking out.

Doing this review in October, two weekends late, but there’s really not much to say about this one. I’m generally pretty opposed to the genre of true-to-life, near-future space movies with a few exceptions, like Moon (2009) and ContactDoing this review in October, two weekends late, but there’s really not much to say about this one. I’m generally pretty opposed to the genre of true-to-life, near-future space movies with a few exceptions, like Moon (2009) and Contact (1997). For the most part, they feel a little smug and self-serious like First Man and Gravity. “But what about The Martian???” everyone responds. “It was such a feel-good movie! It was so scientifically ACCURATE,” to which I say, I watch YouTube videos on picture frame hanging for scientific accuracy, I go to see movies for original storytelling. Interstellar and Arrival felt like hypebeasty films that never really delivered on their promises. Space movies feel like an excuse to use a lot of CGI and green screens, off-set by a tremendous amount of time in tiny, windowless compartments, and mildly gross shots of people squirting food directly in front of their mouths and then slurping it slowly into their food holes. If there isn’t a fear for space food consumption yet I’m coining it now: cosmophagyphobia.

These vanity projects are so common nowadays that Mekado Murphy from the NYT has a short article outlining the phenomenon of movie stars receiving their own Space Movies as a kind of rite of passage as they hit stardom. Which is all just to say, I know this is a me thing not a movie thing, but I still think the “serious science” genre of space movies has a lot to learn from their goofy younger sci-fi siblings. Also, I blame Tom Hanks for all of this **** **** One spot of joy and light in this movie’s otherwise bleak and craven existence is the fact that Polygon did a fabulous write up of this film in which they summarized the trailer as such, “Brad Astra is Sad Astra because of his Dad Astra”–that recommendation comes care of Friend from work, and I think says everything you need to know about the movie. The thing that really pissed me off every time I saw this goddamn trailer at the movie theater was how **** quickly it appears that things go to **** in this goddamn movie. You see Brad Pitt fighting in a MOONCHASE of all things, because NASA can’t have it’s act together for the 48 hours it takes for him to leave Earth’s orbit, apparently. The fact that **** goes down so quickly really made me feel like the story was putting unnecessary restraints on itself. No one is going to be able to find, neutralize, and resolve an anti-matter death ray on Saturn if they’re having trouble with their very first way station...

All that said, this movie was disappointing in so many ways. Anyone who went expecting that Ruth Negga and Liv Tyler were going to have speaking lines was sorely disappointed. Despite being what I think amounted to “Mayor of Mars,” Negga has effectively no control over any of the operations of her base, not even of the tiny little transmission room they use to let teens play their loud rock music on Mars. Also, the circumstances of her birth and her relationship to the search for extra-terrestial life mission that Sad Pitt’s father was a part of is still really murky to me. Was she conceived before the astronauts went into space and born on Mars? Or was the trip so long that the astronauts had sex in space and then gave birth… on Mars? I’m so confused by this plot point. Although the discovery at the end of this movie is quite nice, it runs into the Mowgli problem, AKA “Traveling at the Speed of Plot,” where a character can run on foot through a burning **** forest in five minutes where it takes him half of his childhood to make it there the first time. So too with Brad Astra. When I asked, “How long DOES it take to get to Saturn?” Friend responds sagely, “It depends how fast you’re going,” which is both wise and infuriating.

My major takeaway is that this movie makes Sandra Bullock look like an **** Everything that she does by the skin of her teeth and only after minutes of calculations and preparation, Brad can do in his sleep. He’s an astronaut and Mars’s most stealthy climber and a skilled nuclear technician and a feelsy ex-husband. Dad mentioned similar things when we checked notes, but he was less bothered by the Moon. He also mentioned the weirdness of not having sent a drone or probe or something to have stopped the anti-matter death ray, so at least we’re on the same page there.

Are we willing to continue until the end regardless of the consequences? Do we become what we judge without realizing it? The story that the film tells us has a very deep meaning and explores the most hidden corners of the human being. The sound and score, the photography, the scenarios and landscapes, the cinematography, the direction and the colours are really gorgeous. Expand

I actually chuckled at the ridiculousness of certain scenes, especially when he used a shield through a rock field which not only did not push him backwards but didn't change his course, and he somehow projected the trajectory back to his craft perfectly from a spinning turbine. WOW. Although Brad Pitt is fine in the roll, I didn't feel a connection to him, and didn't feel the connection between him and his father either. The overall look of the film is excellent and its saving grace. I'm still not sure what was causing the electrical surges that was taking place throughout the universe, but some of the dialogue was muddied here and there and difficult to decipher. People sitting around me were complaining about the slow pacing when the film ended. The film reminded me of a space version of Apocalypse Now, where the destination is a mad man and the journey getting there is treacherous and death. Ad Astra is not at the level of that masterpiece of course, but maybe worth seeing for the overall visual look. Expand

One of the most thematically and emotionally confused films i've seen in many years.

The point of the movie is seemingly to explore father-son dynamics, the burden of isolation, how the near-space of our minds might just be more important than the deep-space of our ambitions - plus a multitude of other worthy subjects in between.

To do this, the film-makers have assembled a stellar cast, tremendous visual effects and exceptional set design.

With such an armoury at their disposal, how could Grey, Pitt and co fail?

Well...chuck in some psychopathic space monkeys, illogical interplanetary journeys, loaded-for-bear lunar pirate carjackers, countless instances of laughably improbable (and I mean utterly ridiculous) science and you're halfway to Oblivion. No pun intended.

At regular intervals come scenes that are so far-fetched that they ask less of a "willing suspension of disbelief" and promise more of an "insult to your intelligence". The metal panel through the rings of Neptune was extraordinary in this regards, but it is just one of MANY that punctured any bond I had with the underlying themes the film is trying to explore.

Additionally, Pitt's transformation from sociopath to social worker is practically instantaneous and therefore unconvincing (although the moments of high emotion that he does show are well delivered) and Lee's character is even more unlikeable. The fact there is no opportunity for them to bond, bounce off and understand each other leaves an emotional void even greater than some of the plot mechanics.

In trying to weave high art themes with low brow science, there whole film just feels disconnected - from its component parts, from its lofty intentions and indeed from many of its audience.

Nothing interesting happens in this movie. I appreciate that it is trying to be grounded in reality but then it goes and throws that out the window with unbelievable physics in some sequences. I don't want to spoil anything, but this movie is basically 2 hours of waiting for something to happen. I wouldn't even call this SciFi. It's more like a family drama. Completely disappointed. If you are expecting something along the lines of 2001, Interstellar, etc., sorry but prepare to be bored to death. Even the Martian, which is a comparable movie to this, was leaps and bounds ahead. If you like nice space visuals, it might be worth it to see unless you have an awesome HD TV at home. Expand

What most surprised me about the movie was it’s tension. The lightness and boundlessness of floating through space contrasts sharply with scenes of bodies flailing hopelessly to the earth, skulls cracking on airlock windows and human arms being devoured by genetically modified space apes. However where the more subtle tension builds around the theme of space travel, huge opportunities are lost by not exploiting Liv Tyler’s character as the strained romantic relationship between her and the protagonist. Also the father-son drama although mostly well acted lacks in believability and emotional connection. Expand

Overall, this is a two-hour road trip in space. The problem is, there are no roads in space, only darkness. So it's not even a road trip, it's a two-hour airplane travel. The script is as simple as a short comic at the end of a newspaper. Some storylines in the scrip just don't make any sense. Whole characters and scenes could have been gone without any consequences to the plot. The movie could be literally 30 minutes. It felt like 3 hours, even though, it's only 2. Your brain has nothing to do there. Mine tried. But the fact is, the movie is basically telling you everything. And it doesn't talk much. I don't understand why this was two-hour movie. It would have been a great short film. But instead, it's more of a good planetary exhibition rather than a good movie. Expand

The film was mis-marketed to be a Sci-Fi epic, like some big action movie. But that is not the case. 'Ad Astra' is a slow-burn character study of sorts of Brad Pitt's character. The film is absolutely gorgeous with stellar cinematography, incredible visuals, and a possible Oscar nomination worthy performance from the lead role, Brad Pitt. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, this movie has nothing to do with Interestellar. Interestellar is the same movie as Inception, but in space. It's clever, extremely well done, and that's it. I don't even think Ad Astra is a sci-fi movie, as the space is only a metaphor for the main character's journey in life through solitude. Always looking out, trying to find reasons and answers, with goals in mind, and never looking in. It's about how our parents are in many ways our heroes, how much they are an example in our lives. But as we grow older, we end up learning that they're only humans, with flaws, and resentment and maybe also capable of grandious things. People can trash them, or put them on pedestals, but the truth is nobody is perfect nor the devil. It has strong religious conotation. The cinematography is amazing, and it's Brad's best acting ever. I didn't have problems with the pace and narration of the movie, but some people did. I must admit that Max Richter did let me down. I'm waiting for the 3 hour cut from Criterion, since some scenes from the trailer were not in the movie. And don't read those reviews trashing the movie. The character was not on a trip to f*cking Neptune for Christ's sake. He just went on a journey inside himself to find out how he became that person, and how he didn't want to be that person anymore. People are just so f*cking used to get everything chewed up that they can't even think for themselves nowadays. I'll tell you what, you want to go on a journey? Watch the movie and then read some reviews trashing it. It's really like going on a trip to human stupidity. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Slow, dragging, and more than a little depressing. The effects are good and Brad Pitt does a great job playing an emotionally compromised astronaut who turns out to be bad luck to a lot of the folks he comes in contact with. The psychological check-ins his character has to regularly endure make you wonder if he’s just playing the game or what his real motives might be, while at the same time giving hints of a fascist government pulling the strings from back home. It does show us a few things no space movie I’ve seen has shown us before, including: a person parachuting down from an low-orbit antenna station, a high-speed moon buggy chase, a unique fight scene in space, an astronaut swimming underwater in his space suit, and the first space surfing I’ve seen since Dark Star. Overall, not a favorite or something I’ll need to see again. Expand

I'm genuinely baffled by how it is possible for some viewers to be moved by this appalling piece of garbage calling itself a movie. It's random shots stitched together with virtually no plot. Ludicrous.

It’s a slow burn that has an emotionally distant lead character...and that’s basically poison to general audiences. With that being said, a lot of people also won’t like it purely because of the story. Like I said, it’s slow and it’s more about Roy’s journey to finding that emotion he lacks in the beginning. It’s about a man and his desire to have a relationship with his father. Space travel is not the true focus here. I thought it was extraordinarily well done and honestly I can’t find much that I don’t like about it. It also features the best cinematography a film has had in a couple of years. Every frame is beautiful. Expand

Ad Astra is inferior to the director's previous movie 'Lost City of Z'. AA contains some of what made Lost City of Z great, but utilizes it much less and trading it in for sterile narration/monologues; close-up shots of Brad Pitt's face.
Ad Astra could have been fine with the monologues if the writing was much better. An example would be the film A Scanner Darkly, which had monologues ripped straight from the book by Philip K Dick. (So of course it would be good) None of the writing is especially stand out but the direction in the monologue scenes is too true to the character. It's not directed badly, its directed to reflect the emotionless dialogues.
Almost everything else is excellent, there's just not enough of it to outweigh the poor introspective moments. What made some scenes in Ad Astra and a lot of scenes in Lost City of Z memorable is how strikingly haunting the scenes are. The emotional story is perfectly reflected in the images the director presents.
Ad Astra is not the sum of its parts; it contains scenes of brilliance combined with too many scenes of dull monologue and dialogue.

Set in a vague “not so distant future” where mankind has reached the edge of the solar system in Neptune (as Pluto is no longer thought of as a planet) but remains unable to reach into the intricacies of the soul for lack of volition and surpluses of fear. The movie moves slowly but surely into the protagonist’s acceptance of his universal needs, doubts and longings amidst a mostly gloomy atmosphere accomplished through tense and low music, sparse sound effects, and long voice-overs. It takes a nuclear explosion for the protagonist to shake off his reluctance to bond with the world thus transforming himself into a new shape of the father figure. Pitt’s performance goes splendidly from emotional unavailability to a calm vulnerability in surrender. Expand

Ad Astra can also be called Rad Astra, because yes, this movie is gorgeous. Ironically Stellar,to say the least.
As someone who loves these kinds of movies (the Space genre,or the Experience Genre for my taste. This one breaks the barrier, though),this was probably my favourite kind of Space Movie. I love that the best Space Movies out there now are all about Daddy Issues, between this and Interstellar. Don't let the Disney/Fox merger trailers fool you into thinking it's an Action Movie, because, while this is a Space Opera (and an Action Movie for 2 Seconds) in a way, this is (at its heart) a Character-driven film. Oh,and it's also slow, but should I even care? (we'll get there later)
I mean it as "this is a Character film",because we only follow him,his experiences in Space and his struggles in life, while he's travelling his ass over the stars, amidst a Future that I would perfectly picture in my head, and a big-ass " Save The Universe" plot. Brad Pitt shows his all in this,as he plays a Character that I can kind of relate to (with lines like "I talked when I should've listened" or "They're using me") in terms of charisma, movements or even wide range of emotions. When he freaks out,he WILL freak out. There's also a cute subplot about him always being committed to the next mission and how he should stop. Good stuff.
This is also handled by some great Production Design. Hoyte Van Hoytema (the Photographer of several Nolan movies) films this and it looked beautiful from the first second. Seriously,I hated myself for remembering this didn't come out in IMAX (but Yesterday sure did, because why not),because it could've benefited A LOT from some Premium Cinema experiences. Same for the Score,as it fuels up the narrative and makes it creepy or tension-full at times. This is the one where I feel like Lorne Balfe will get the Oscar. You know he's on his way NOW.
And the Art Direction is a standout here. Never has Space looked this beautiful and stunning since 2001 A Space Odyssey. Oh,and let's discuss the Action Sequence on the Moon. That is history right there,80 seconds or less, and I'm glad they pulled the heels hardcore and went full Fury Road, between Solar Panel crashes,Gravity throws, and Laser Guns (?!?),which appears to be a common theme in this movie, and I'm glad it is.
Although, had it not been for a Plot Convenience moment, then it would've been perfect. Yeah,it's emotional and all,but it's still Plot Convenience.
And the other flaws i'll mention aren't in relation the movie,so take them as rants about the average Audience.
Are we (no,not me. THEY) now acknowledging slow movies exist and are boring to the average consumer who goes to the movies? Disney/Fox merger trailers aside,go see Costumes Abbey or Abominable (next movie for me...God) if you're that bored with Space Shenanigans.
And if you want to go see this, please support this. I'm struggling to write a coherent review for it (and usually studios like 20th Fox are crowded for Franchise craze) but I'm telling you. It's failing to make its money back,so please. Go see this and stop supporting movies like "Oscar Nominee for Best Costumes" and "Animated Yeti". Ok,Universal rant over.
Space is scary and sad,but it rocks. Hell yeah it ROCKS.

It's a great looking film that can also be pretty dull at points.

This is one of the most visually impressive films of the year. There is just so much gorgeous scenery and special effects. Includes the best looking realization of the moon's surface I've ever seen. The film does a great job of balancing the whiteness or colors of the spacecraft with the darkness of space. The cinematography is also excellent with just some great camera shots.

The movie does a strong job of world building in this near future world where space travel is easier and travel to the moon is pretty routine. The setting is explained naturally without forced exposition.

This is a very deliberately paced movie that focuses too much on the hero's journey for it's own good. This is isn't too much of an issue for the first half of the film as they throw several interesting things at you. However as Pitt's character travels further away from human civilization, scenes get far more drawn out and just plain boring. I had to step away for a few minutes and didn't miss anything.

It doesn't help the movie any that the main story and the hero's journey are all really basic and predictable when you get down to it.

Though I just said how simple his character's arc was, Pitt does a really good job of selling the guy especially since he has his emotions in check for a good part of the film. Though he's not in this much, Jones also does a hell of a job. (Also, this isn't really relevant to the content of the film, but Donald Pleasance is in this and this is the first time I've seen him without facial hair. I think he's a reverse Trebeck in that I actually thinks he looks better without it despite being accustomed to him with the moustache and sometimes beard for years.)

I think this film is more appealing to those you are interested in intellectual films. If you're into pure entertainment, this may not be your thing.

This film is extremely slow-paced(and"Ad Astra" follows a story of a determined astronaut(Brad Pitt)who sets on a secret mission to locate his supposedly dead father and to find the source that is putting Earth in critical danger. This film is extremely slow-paced(and predictable)considering that it is only 2 hours(like any other movie). "Ad Astra" is monotonous throughout, with a very unnecessary, imbecile plot that makes no sense, which will put you to sleep for almost half of the movie. However, prominent themes of a meaningful relationship between a father and son is truly heartwarming to watch and the theme of sacrificing your life for your career is also shown. The special effects crew is someone I would like to applaud to. I appreciate that they were able to successfully create a space-like environment in a movie theater, although, it was excruciatingly lagging. They could have cut out many parts of simple (silent) sequences or transitions which were at least 5 minutes or longer, that could have been much shorter. James Gray, with "Ad Astra" has tried too hard to make this a meaningful, original movie. With monologues that were sappy and not so bittersweet as it should have been. This film has many characters that serve almost no impact on or a crucial role in the film, which I am not a fan of. In conclusion, PLEASE do NOT waste a movie ticket or your money to watch "Ad Astra" if you are not into space-related films. More importantly, PLEASE do NOT bring your kids or friends who are 17 or under as they will get bored and most likely doze off. As a teenager watching "Ad Astra", felt like years. I got bored very easily and fell asleep like the majority of the audience. If I was awake, I would see people walk out disappointed. However, some people(mainly adults) would most likely appreciate its' interesting aspects and uniqueness. Overall, "Ad Astra" is a film not worthy to watch as it will most likely to come out on streaming services or sites that you can watch without wasting money or a movie ticket. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Excruciating, nails-down-the-blackboard stuff for anyone with a science education or familiarity with the works of Joseph Conrad or human behaviour. This hairdo edition of Heart of Darkness violates basic physics in practically every scene, and the storyline, far from reaching for the stars as the title might suggest, never gets past reaching for the mood stabiliser pills.

The narrative construction is ridiculous from start to finish, whether it's the confected "power surge" crisis, the moon pirates, the decades-long but oddly mundane exploratory mission, the Murderous Space Baboon (no, really), or the gross misunderstanding of Project Orion-style propulsion, and everything in between.

Brad Pitt's flat affect is ideal for portraying a man with a flat affect and unresolved issues with his father, but there's little depth of hidden feeling here.

The director intended for the film to feature "the most realistic depiction of space travel that's been put in a movie". Well, it ain't. It's one of the least realistic. The rocketry is drivel from start to finish. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky is turning in his grave. The depiction of orbital mechanics is not merely flawed; major plot elements of the film depend on them being radically different to real world physics.

There are three scenes with aerodynamic significance. In the first, where aerodynamics are used to create a false sense of danger, there isn't any real danger, and in the second and third, the director seems to be entirely unaware that in the real world the maneuvers depicted would be sensationally difficult, dangerous, and probably fatal.

The idea that a spaceship on interplanetary transfer can make a quick "stop" to board another one is as absurd as the (impossibly) brief transfer they were already making. Basically the director has assumed that humans can survive G-forces that would turn real people into smeared pulp.

The energy physics of the confected "crisis" involving "antimatter surges" is just invented babble.

The idea of traveling to Mars, in person just to radio Neptune is drivel. We already have bidirectional radios and relay stations reaching further.

The psychology of every crew depicted has more in common with schlocky sci-fi-horror video games than with real-world hiring practices. Basically it's your choice between steely-eyed-missile-men, or hopeless flakes that in a highly regulated society (such as that depicted) would never have been in a cockpit at all.

There isn't a single scene that stands up to a moment's scientific scrutiny. Comparisons with 2001, Gravity, or even Interstellar are just bunk.

There isn't a single scene of literary significance, either. Comparisons with Heart of Darkness are fair, but unlike Coppola's work, only negative ones. All the allegorical significance is clobbered by the effort to portray a character rather than a society.

In the end, it turns out that Ruth Negga's turn as a burned-out Martian is the only good thing in this film, and her outfit rocks.

It is a visually beautiful film, Pitt does a fine job or acting, the concept is fine, but the space experience is silly, and the relationships are just plot driven. We really learn nothing about anyone in the story including Pitt, except that he thinks he should trust people more and wishes he could - not exactly profound ground there. What I would guess is that the writers were smart enough to know that what they were writing was dumbed-down, and the science was not even close to anything that would not inspire a real astronaut to laugh out loud at most of it, but they figured the average movie goer would not notice and would love - macho man goes to neptune. But it is an expensive missed opportunity to make a great movie just to make money. Expand
