If Johnny Knoxville had grown up a Jersey kid, Action Park would've surely been his Shangri-La. But the fictionalized story just doesn't do either justice. The narrative is about as simple as it can possible get. And there aren't enough Jackass-type stunts to make up for the lack of a compelling story. Crude humor can be a fun experience but when the craft of the movie itself feels juvenile, it alienates its audience. The story is plain, many scenes aren’t earned and much of the acting is half-assed. I find it telling that Eleanor Cox (merely 16 years old) was the only cast members consistently doing her job. Action Point is so sloppy, it’s unprofessional.

Essentially, the direction and editing of Action Point are non-existent as the film aimlessly jumps across loosely-connected situations. Many scenes are blatantly pointless but that really could be said of Action Point overall. In the end, this movie might be good for some grins & nostalgia here & there, but it comes with an insulting lack of preparation. Skip Action Point because it doesn’t respect your time.

As a 3-time survivor of Action Park (with a permanent scar on my thigh from flipping on the Alpine Slide and landing upside-down on the concrete track), I felt I had to see this. This film simply hijacks the name and basic theme of Action Park and turns out a cheap, lame, waste of time. Action Park was dangerous, of course, but it wasn't a junkyard populated by toothless morons and wild animals. The customers were kids like me from the suburbs who wanted a thrill they couldn't get from the big amusement parks. The movie "Action Point" dreams to be is "Meatballs," except "Action Point" has little to no plot, god-awful acting, and not a single character you'd care about in any way. The laughs you'd expect to get might work for some pre-teens, but this thing doesn't deserve attention from anyone else. Check out the online documentaries about Action Park (and "Meatballs if you haven't seen it), and pay to see something--anything--else.… Expand

I'm writing this after just seeing the trailer which is supposed to show the best parts and even the trailer is pure garbage. More moronic 'punch to the groin' type juvenile comedy from this troupe.

I've always been a fan of the Jackass (TV & movies) and found "Bad Grandpa," which starred Johnny Knoxville to be great fun. This one casts him as the owner of a failing amusement park. This one casts him as the owner of a failing amusement park. His decision to eliminate all safety rules results in slapstick gags and pratfalls in almost every scene. While many of them look painful, few elicit the expected comic response. It doesn't help that the supporting cast is full of bland characters (with Chris Pontius the only exception) and the script is dull, unoriginal and never funny. Sadly, this energetic mess falls as flat as one of those stunts.… Expand

I like watching stupid people hurt themselves and I WILL NOT APOLOGIZE FOR THAT.

It never reaches Jackass levels, but will still prove amusing to anyone who enjoyed watching Johnny Knoxville and friends subject themselves to pain back in the day.

There's really not much else to say other than that. It tries to go for that raunchy, 70s'/80s' era slackers vs "the man" comedy vibe which kind of works. The stunts are pretty exciting, but this certainly isn't Jackass 4. Oh, and supposedly the whole thing is based on a real amusement park. Honestly, if you liked the trailer then you should like this. It's not like you don't know what you're getting into.… Expand

As much as I wanted to like it, I just can't. The pranks aren't funny or even well thought out and the plot of the movie is so freaking awful, as is the acting.

It's a highly enjoyable summer movie with a fun cast, nice sets, some great stunts and an authentic late 70s early 80s throwback setting as well. While the stunts aren't always used as effectively as they could have been, at least you can see that the crew cared about their film in their authenticity. Lastly the fact that Action Point runs out of plot about halfway through doesn't really help its case either. That said, I still had a really good time with this movie and would recommend it if you're looking for some lighthearted summery entertainment. It's got Knoxville's heart, broken bones and popping eyeball all over it.… Expand

While I applaud the people that enjoy their work, and no doubt Johnny Knoxville has gotten quite rich doing it, I think being on the threshold of turning 50 and still beating the same dead horse is a very sad thing.

This movie felt like the son of jackass on steroids, without the really next level crazy cast. The performance of the actors was really great and felt real believable even for the tension filled and emotional scenes. The directing was really heavy on the practical shooting and did every single stunt in real life with added safety measures. And for most of the time there weren't even stunt doubles, and for this hats off to Johnny Knoxville for still being able to pull of some crazy things to hurt himself just to entertain. For this the entertainment value of the movie was good and overall it was fun to watch, the only bad thing about the movie was the cheesy script and sometimes cliche story. Due to this the immersion sometimes was broken. The bi-linear story-line felt too simple and to generic for most viewers even though the rest of the movie was executed with style and care.
Overall it's an above average movie with a great production crew and humor filled scenes, even though the humor did not shine as much as expected. At the core the movie has a sweet message but sadly it was delivered in the cheesy way.… Expand

For a movie about an amusement park that's supposed to be nothing but fun, Action Point isn't very fun to watch. There are a few moments of amusement when characters do Jackass type stunts and end up in quite a bit of pain. But apart from those few brief moments, Action Point isn't very funny, and frankly it's pretty boring. I found myself thinking about what kind of food I was going to pick up after I left the theater, and that's not what I want to be doing when I'm watching a 1.5 hour comedy. The story is quite cliched and is pretty typical of a movie of this nature. The problem is that while a comedy is usually able to get by with a less-than-stellar story because it's ultimately a funny movie...Action Point doesn't succeed in the comedy department. The story is also told in a past-present format and there was no need, at all, for the "present" storyline. It was completely pointless. The best part of Action Point is the ending. Both because at least it ended in a somewhat satisfying way, and because it was finally over.… Expand

I can see why this movie has such a low rating. It is pretty rough. Although, I have been a fan of Knoxville for quite a time now, and it was refreshing to see him return to the Silver Screen doing a film in the vein of Jackass. That being said, Chris Pontius is a pretty terrible actor. He should probably stick with media similar to where he got his start. I still found myself walking out of the theater smiling though. It was a fun summer flick. Knoxville literally put his blood, sweat, and bones into filming this movie. If there was just a little bit more effort in the writing though.… Expand

really funny movie about an amusement park with no safety regulations at all. everyone does drugs and gets drunk and has the time of their lives. no real point to the story but its pretty funny and it was just a good time.

At the very beginning of 21st century, a Chinese college student as westernized as me was zealous about the kaleidoscope from Hollywood, and one of those most neoteric and notorious pinballs was the R-rated comedy, which then has emerged and then shot applausively. As is well-known, Jackass is one of the most pioneering R-rated comedies as well as of the most appealing IPs. However, as a kind of derivative to Jackass, Action Point is as by-the-numbers as the tuxedo universally acknowledged on Oscar night.

One of the most delightful facets of American culture, or should we say Hollywood culture, is that, even though Coca-Cola is one of the strongest and most popular brands, it’s a kind of cheap bargain. To define R-rated comedies as equal as Coca-Cola is unfair for staff from Hollywood. That kind of comedy is not soft or foamed; it’s nauseous and brazen. I can’t remember my first encounter with an R-rated comedy, however, since the number of box-office- hotshot-R-rated comedies is double-digit, I can recall a few of them. The first impression, if you’re a R-rated-comedy-virgin, would be that you can hardly distinguish **** from jokes. A genre film has its own way to stylize or be stylized. As an invention, the R-rated comedy does not seem as drastic as the French Revolution, however, it is an overturn of rules invented by comedians that a comedy should make people laugh and think. Concerning the funny part, that kind of comedy is flashy and sleazy; concerning the serious part, funny, very funny.

It’s not clear that what kind of opinion has driven Action Point, a comedy rated R, directed by Tim Kirkby and starring Johnny Knoxville and Chris Pontius, into a dramedy. Absolutely not conscientiousness. As with Bad Grandpa, a previous film by Knoxville, who’s the synonym of Jackass, Action Point features traditional Jackass-style stunts connected by a fictional narrative. I’ve never watched Jackass, although I’ve learned that Jackass is a big franchise, with his origin as an American reality comedy television series full of perceived indecency and encouragement of dangerous behavior, best know for his stunt-style jokes and co-creator and star Johnny Knoxville. After the show went off the air, the cast reunited in 2002 to film a full-length motion picture version of the show entitled Jackass: The Movie, the success of which has bred four so-so sequels and the advent of Jackass 4 in 2021. To be honest, I do not intend to give up my disgust against Jackass simply for my critic on Action Point, which is quite ridiculous, exemplified by the fact that I did not even watch the whole film, not only because of its indifferent narration of the story but also poor stunt choreography. In a word, Action Point is too jackass to be a Jackass.

What does the story leak? Well, it’s a typical Revenge of the Nerds, starting from the recalling of Deshawn Chico “D.C.” (Johnny Knoxville) to his granddaughter narrating his experiences about his prefect amusement park-Action Point. Many years ago, D.C. was the freak owner of Action Point which was as freak as himself, famous for the immense danger due to inexperienced and untrained staff, poorly designed rides, and minimal low-quality maintenance. Somehow, the park was popular with kids as being the only amusement park around. However, a new amusement park, ‘7 Parks’, with higher safety standards than Action Point, opens up and begins to steal its clientele, the coming of which pressured D.C. a lot due to his failure to pay off a $100,000 loan. Also, his estranged teenage daughter Boogie (Eleanor Worthington Cox) comes to visit and begins to help out at the park as a summer job. To save his beloved park and his relationship with his daughter, D.C. and the Action Point staff risk everything to pull out all the stops. Boring, by-the-numbers and deflated, Action Point will disappoint you more by those perfunctory stunts which is probably the main reason the film lives. Anyway, don’t misjudge Jackass if you’re or will be into R-rated comedies. You don’t have to know anything about existentialism, the theory that humans are free and responsible for their own actions in a world without meaning. Both its birth and death would be miracles.… Expand

Don't think about Jackass if you are. You will be let down. Not what was planned to be, but what is. Although the story is hazy and the movie is goofy, if you can enjoy it for what it is. And I have no doubts about that.
