Great movie! I really haven't seen any anime movies, but I've recently started getting into anime and I wanted to give this one a chance. Wow! What an emotional roller coaster. The movie was told beautifully with a great amount of unique characters and a great message that no matter what you have done in your life, if you want to and willing you can change for the better and I think it really captures that really well. This is the next best anime in the recent time after 'Your Name'. Not that you know this director very well, not at the international level. But with a film like this, she's going to be. This isA second chance to fix the past mistake.

This is the next best anime in the recent time after 'Your Name'. Not that you know this director very well, not at the international level. But with a film like this, she's going to be. This is another teen romance. Well, romance is not exactly a word that matches with what this film is about narrative, but there's no other way to describe its theme. It was like before romance, that mean before committing to a relationship and after you had started to like someone while fixing the mistakes made in the past.

It's a high school tale. Before that, it opened with a brief flashback of the elementary school events, where Shoya Ishida bullied a new admission Shoko Nishimiya for her hearing impairment. Soon after that, she'd transferred to another school. Now, a few years later, they meet again in the high school, where Ishida tried to fix what he had done wrong a while ago for her. So a relationship develops, despite people around them does not understand their commitment. At some point, it will be tested, which might lead to uncover their true feeling to one another.

This is surely aimed at the teen audience. Especially, the romance and sentimental parts are intended for the youngsters, but anyone would enjoy it. So, I felt them, but not like I'm still young. Otherwise, I would have said it is a masterpiece. That's only from the story perspective. The sketches and animations were not bad. The film characters were awesome. Each one was very unique and different people pick different characters as their favourite. I liked Yuzuru as I always like tomboyish type roles. But obviously Ishida and Shoko make this film.

Smooth animation. Technically comparable with any big names (anime titles). That also means the director is now in the league of the best anime-maker. She's young and I hope she keeps doing more films. As I said many times before, that after Hayao Miyazaki retired from making films, we need more people like this filmmaker to fill that empty space. The film won many awards for its great achievement, as well as box office success in the domestic market. Expecting the rest of the world and anime fans to receive it at the same extent.

It was originally based on the manga of the same name, and a television series was made before this feature anime. As I collect film quotes, the best ones, I was disappointed on that context. There were many emotionally and romantically appealing lines, but not on the moral perception. That does not mean the film lacks the social consciousness. In fact, the film highlights the bullying and its severe consequences. That alone is enough, this is a must see for the school kids.

Surely kids, teens and some youngsters would love it, but as far as the adults, this is not an ideal thematic, yet you can't ignore its artistry and the intention of the film. Sometimes it might help you to like it in the second viewing. Because this is one of those kind. My issue was understanding the Japanese sign language. Besides, the subtitle for that was not much helpful, as it was exactly translated as what the hearing impaired character babbled which is an alternate spelling for every word and sentence.

I had lots of fun watching it, as well as other moods like romantic, touching, annoyance, but overall it leans towards the good side. Just over two hours, it never looked too slow or hurried in the story or the character developments. Could be the best to pick as a date flick or get together with your school friends, particularly opposite sex friends. My final saying is, it is not to be missed for many reasons I've mentioned in this review and the other one is it being an anime, a quality one.

I'm not a fan of anime, and to be honest, I was kind of reluctant to see this movie. But after i was recommended this movie several times, by friends who don't like anime that much either, I decided to give it aDo NOT prejudge this movie

I'm not a fan of anime, and to be honest, I was kind of reluctant to see this movie. But after i was recommended this movie several times, by friends who don't like anime that much either, I decided to give it a chance.

This masterpiece changed the way I see anime.

I'm not a film critic, in fact, it's my first time writing a review, so I won't get into animation, soundtrack or any technical details.

The only thing I will say is, read the manga.
It will be really useful for a better understanding of the story, and know each character in detail.

I don't want to rush and say this is the best movie I have ever seen, but it now has an eternal place in my heart… Expand

One of best opus of long feature anime: the warming story of subtle difference between being victimizer and victim of bullying, mixed with a tender story of love and forgiveness. The hand made art is delightful.

It's an awesome movie! The animation is perfect and I understand why it got nominated in Japanese academy award for best animated film in 2017. The movie shows that it's bad to judge handicapped people and to bully. We also see that suicideIt's an awesome movie! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Silent Voice is a remarkable film that tackles disability, bullying, suicide, and redemption, and leaves a moral that resonates with us all. It's impossible for me to explain further without some minor spoilers of the setting, but I wouldn't worry, as I know you will love this movie regardless if you are a fan of Anime at all.

The story's main character is Ishida, who relentlessly bullies a girl named Nishimiya in elementary school because of her deafness. Nishimiya is eventually transferred out of the school, and Ishida must answer for his misdeeds. However, while those around him either remained silent about or even participated in the bullying, he is ostracized by his former "friends", and finds himself the victim of the same abuse he inflicted on Nishimiya. Fast forward: Ishida and Nishimiya happen to meet as high schoolers. While things are tense at first, Nishimiya sees Ishida has sincerely changed, as he made an effort to learn sign language since elementary school. They begin to spend time together, try to empathize with each other, and contemplate the true meaning of friendship.

One reason the story works so well is because it never ignores the severity of Ishida's bullying. Even he comes to see his situation as something he deserves; going so far as to plan his suicide. He is so full of guilt, he can no longer even look those around him in the eye; instead envisioning a X obscuring their faces. The viewer comes to empathize with him regardless, and hope he finds redemption, because we see his indefinite self-loathing doesn't help anyone. The film also does a great job in making Nishimiya's situation clear. The audience has the benefit of her signs being translated, so when those around her can't understand what she tries to convey, it hurts for us too. I have to say, this film's ending is incredible. By the time the credits roll, chances are you may be crying right along with the characters. It is fully earned, and completely satisfying.

As for the supporting cast, however, things are a bit hit-or-miss. Over the course of the film, Ishida finds himself slowly making friends with some of his former classmates, and a few newcomers as well. Some of these are likable and interesting, but others feel like missed opportunities. Kawai, for example, is notable for putting all the blame for the bullying on Ishida, and minimizing her own fault in going along with it, but this has no real impact on the plot. In the Manga, Ishida wonders if he has become an unreliable narrator who merely imagined others bullying Nishimiya. In reality, he had changed for the better, while Kawai stayed the same. Eventually, Kawai has to accept the guilt of her participation, and resolves to become a better person.

In this film, nothing like that ever happens, which makes her inclusion feel pointless. There are too many characters to go into such detail about every one, but there are similar circumstances, where it feels like something important has been omitted, and because it seems like they have nothing to do with the story, the film drags whenever they're on-screen. I'm not opposed to the film's long run-time of 2 hours, but I can't help but feel it should have been just a bit longer to develop those supporting characters properly, or shorter and cut them altogether.

Overall, I think the apparent consensus of 8/10 is about what this film deserves. It won't win any awards for animation or music, and it drags a bit, but the core of the film, the story between Ishida and Nishimiya, is really good. I can't recommend this film for everyone, but I can say that I will never forget it, or how it warmed my heart. For me, this is a classic in animation.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Visually, this film is a triumph. The bright color pallet, the fluid motion, and the beautiful cinematography make it a feast for the eyes.

The story touches on many themes, such as depression, suicide, self-worth, and it tackles ideas that are very relevant in the real world. This movie is real. That's its main strength. The story is real. The characters are real. Their struggles and flaws are real. The themes are real. You could really connect and resonate with this movie, because of the fact that it focuses on relatable characters, who all grow in some way.

I enjoyed the way the story was presented. No needless exposition, no contrivances. It flows with such cohesion and fluidity. The pacing is excellent. It gives the movie time to flesh out themes and characters, while at the same time holding the viewer's interest. As for the flaws, I think that some themes were not well-developed, some characters are either bland or unlikable, and the plot itself is really nothing all that special on paper.

Overall, I think that this movie is excellent, and achieves what it set out to and more. A must-watch if you love anime like I do, and even if you don't, I have a feeling that if you just give it a shot, you'll be pleasantly surprised.… Expand

A Silent Voice is one of the best Japanese animated films of 2016 with incredible animation, a real story with real characters and, apart from that, a sentimentality that will make you laugh, suffer and enjoy this great audiovisual work.

For me as a person who knows how it feels to get bullied I love this anime movie. The soundtrack is great, the animation gorgeous and the synchro is awesome 10/10 points. I have no argument to say it is not good

This anime is probably one of the best films I've seen in weeks and although its story could be thought repetitive the truth is that its execution is truly well structured and is emotionally resonant.

This film is about bullying but more importantly it's about the true sense of forgiveness, because even if it's not so in all cases the film shows in an intelligent and emotional way that the abuse can end up harming both the victims and the victimizers.

This is an anime about the repercussions of bullying but also about being able to achieve redemption in some way and it surprises even more when it forces you to accept and understand the main character even if you are unable to connect with him.

The animation is not excellent but to tell the truth is a minor flaw in the face of such a good story. Quite recommended, I even plan to buy the manga.… Expand

Brilliant animation and character writing a must see. An artistic and emotionally touching story that truly explores many aspects of bullying. It does suffer to convey all info in the manga, but still holds it's own incredibly well.

It was a really nice movie but alot of key moments from the manga was missing, would have loved if this was a two parter to give it space to grow instead of feeling rushed.

They talk about accessibility with the deficient person, they dont talk on a realistic way about bullying (Once that the protagonist was a bad guy just because he was, without any reason), they dont talk about the negacionism and autoritarism in the schools. So, they justo sell a cute story with so many potencial, but thats it.… Expand
