"A Rainy Day in New York" may not be Woody Allen's best, though it's certainly a step up from many of the painful misfires he's launched in recent years. Despite a somewhat overwritten script, this largely inconsequential romance is breezy, modestly humorous and mildly entertaining, though it could definitely use more (and better) jokes, less overtly conspicuous name-dropping, less regurgitation of themes explored in previous projects, and leads who don't ham it up nearly as much as Timothee Chalamet and Elle Fanning do. To its credit, however, the narrative includes some intriguing little twists and turns, a handful of spot-on one-liners, and fine supporting performances by Liev Schreiber, Jude Law, Rebecca Hall and Cherry Jones. It's something of a letdown to see how this offering turned out given everything that transpired in connection with getting it released, but, considering Allen's track record with recent productions, it's not all that surprising, either. Finally I saw the film I have waited for and, if its Woody's last, its a walkoff winner!
Gatsby (what a great character name and played by Timothee Chalamet) is a student at Yardley College in upstate New York. Its a compromise between him and his parents, as Gatsby's main interests are card games and piano bars. Happily, Gatsby has a beautiful girlfriend, Ashleigh (Elle Fanning) who is a journalism student and writer for the college paper. Its Ashleigh's good fortune to snag an interview with a famous movie director, Pollard (Liev Schrieber) but must travel to Manhattan to meet this man. As this is Gatsby's home city, he is excited to come along and show her his favorite sights and the bar where they play the music he loves. So, off they go. After arrival, the two part, agreeing to meet for lunch after the Pollard meeting. But, things go off kilter. The director is in despair over the film he has just finished and, enchanted by Ashleigh's pretty face and winning ways, he insists she screen it with him. This will take hours and Gatsby gets the call she will be later than she expects. Annoying! Thus, Gatsby goes to visit his brother, who if about to be married. Horrors, this sibling tells Gatsby he can't go through with it, due to his fiancees screeching laugh. Having no advice, Gatsby then visits the set of an indie film being shot by an old friend where he runs into Chan (Selena Gomez) the younger sis of an old Gatsby girlfriend. She has agreed to be in the movie where she is to receive a passionate kiss in a convertible! All too soon, Gatsby gets persuaded to be in the movie and bestow this lip clencher. Ho ho ho. Although they trade barbs and insults, the kiss has rattled them both. As Ashleigh is still busy, Chan and Gatsby go visit a museum as rain is pouring. Wait, what's going on? Tihs enchanting film has all of Woody Allen's fabulous ingredients. The cast is great, with Chalamet shining brightly; all of the others, Fanning, Schieber, Jude Law, Rebecca Hall and the rest, do fine work, too. The sets are wonderful and the costumes snazzy. Most of all, the script is full of humor, pathos, and charm while the direction never falters. Yes, as stated many times, I am Allen's biggest fan living in Toledo, Ohio, which is nowhere at all. But, this film is superlative, matchless, everlasting and magical

So does Selena Gomez, who really is the revelation in this movie. Woody Allen brings that same New York sophisticated attitude. The dialogue. The music. The pacing. Nothing really changes except the actors. It's not one of best, but it's far from one of the worst. If you're fan like I am, I think you'll like it. Woody has had the type of career that no matter what he does from until he leaves us, he will be considered an all-time great director, his personal life be damned. It's obvious he's still prolific and he's in cruise control. For 90 minutes I was entranced. The list of bad Woody Allen movies is really short. This ain't one of them. Expand

Cozy movie to watch with friends or a lover (haha). It’s cute, funny, the actors were perfectly right for the part. Selena Gomez nailed it.

I love Selena Gomez, she's the only one here that gives a good performance even though she's not given a ton of screentime. This is basically the Wish version of Midnight In Paris

This movie is filled to the brim with great performances, good cinematography, unnatural dialog, and really bad directing.

In this case, it was undoubtedly the most painfully slow and dreary WA film I’ve encountered. I figured I couldn’t go wrong with a cast like that - Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Timothy Chalamet, Jude Law, and on and on. But in a way, this felt like a forced attempt to try to Allen-ify a film with a modern cast in a modern era. The “romanticizing the past” elements of the protagonist felt forced, like the figurative clothes were wearing him. Elle seemed to dim down her authenticity into a very unbelievable character (likely at Allen’s hand, as we know he loves a damsel or a brilliant-but-doesn’t-know-it type). The lonely white rich kid trope is tired, and the lines that Timothy spoke were straight out of an old Allen movie romanticizing the same things and the same city. Selena can do no wrong, so she admittedly carried the movie for me. She seemed to be the only one without rose-colored glasses and a sense of imposter syndrome or naïveté. But as for the rest? Painfully slow, boring, and like a regurgitation of Allen’s best work from the past. And as always, better writing than directing - the characters are always a bit too theatrical to be believable, sharing their monologues aloud, squinting a little too hard when they’re meant to be “thinking.” Sincerely, my harshest (and only) metacritic critique to date.
