I don't think this is a horror movie at all. It could be a thriller and a drama. It has a good idea, but the execution is not the best.

Every character arc is boilerplate that feels like it was made hastily for television. Like maybe they pitched and sold the movie on the strength of the monster-novelty and then had to deliver a movie before they came up with characters or a story.

BTW a novel monster does not make a premise. A premise is something like *Elizabeth Bennet must correct her own character faults AND demand the same of her reluctant suitor in order to find love and make a life for herself - before her family loses their home and she finds herself in a bad situation.* OR

*Sarah Connor is being hunted by a mysterious killer and aided by an equally mysterious man whose preposterous story is nearly as scary. She must learn to trust others and accept responsibility/community role before the hunter-killer ends her [newly-important] life.*

Actually, The Terminator (1984) seems like an informative comparison. First of all, you have a hero/main character/protagonist. A Quiet Place has none; it follows the post-narrative/television model of simply throwing a bunch of characters in a situation and leaving it to the audience to determine what is the moral vision of the artwork. Next there is a ticking clock of sorts. The Terminator is on a clearly accelerating timeline with ultimate stakes. When the monster finally kills Sarah Connor, humanity is doomed. In A Quiet Place, once the whole family is killed, then what? IDK - I assume there are millions of other such holdouts all over the world; and because these paper-doll characters are not proper movie characters with psychic dynamics, I really don't care at all about any of them. I could go on and on... Basically take any model from Aristotle's *Poetics* to the present and go down the list. Line by line, this movie fails to deliver almost everything that matters. A screenplay doesn't have to follow rules to be acceptable, but IMHO it has to at least acknowledge the existence of story. This movie follows the post-narrative model usually seen on television: simply sequence one surprising event after another.

The fact that this movie is universally acclaimed makes me feel that I might be in my own fantastic dystopia. I feel a little crazy watching this, knowing how many smart, worldly people recommended it to me. So the movie is left with *just* plot. And the plot is no good IMHO. As others have noted, this is the kind of movie that invites incredulous questions. There are so many obvious solutions to their predicament that go unaddressed... I will tolerate a lot of slop in a horror movie - much more than any other genre. E.g. one of my recent favorites is The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (2023), which has DEEP problems but I understand why they are there and I love it all the more for following its own rules to their conclusions.

A Quiet Place is just a shiny piece of junk for people raised on distraction-amusement-entertainment devoid of story. My hope in spending all this energy to degrade something is that others like me will be warned off from spending 90m on this "movie."

LOL now I'm imagining that last sentence as Sarah Connor's last soliloquy in The Terminator. "What's most difficult for me is trying to decide what to tell you and what not to..."

My one point is for editing; at least the movie is taut, kinetic. Like a variation on the old joke: the food is terrible, but at least they got the portion right. The only other review I gave on this platform was similarly negative. Maybe I will just reserve this site as my outlet for negativity - keep it contained here so I don't become one of those people who delights in pointing out what's wrong with everything.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Shallow Execution of a Promising Concept

"A Quiet Place" introduces a world where sound-hunting creatures threaten a surviving family. While the concept holds promise, execution falls flat, limiting the film's impact.

The movie succeeds in building tension and suspense, creating moments of genuine horror. However, these strengths are overshadowed by significant weaknesses.

The narrative's shallow treatment leaves vital story elements unexplored. The apocalyptic world's origins remain vague, detracting from the overall story. The family's survival focus neglects crucial plot development, leaving the audience unsatisfied.

Inconsistencies, like the characters' unrealistically clean appearance, disrupt immersion. The illogical decision to conceive a child in their perilous situation raises questions about character motivations. Superficial grooming choices further detract from realism.

In conclusion, "A Quiet Place" squanders its potential with superficial execution. While it delivers tension, it fails to explore its own world or develop its characters. The film offers fleeting thrills but lacks depth and authenticity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The basic premise of this movie is so illogical and the solution to the problem so simple that it defies the suspension of disbelief. The monsters can't tolerate certain frequencies of sound and as we find out in the end their heads can be blown of with a shotgun. so what's the problem? Maybe their heads can only be blown off in the last five minutes of the movie, because its always nice to have a feel good "blow it away" moment to end on. But really no! this is just bad writing. Very bad writing. The kind of writing where you go for some dramatic moment or moments but fail to create a logical consistent reason or set of circumstances why that moment should happen. The result of that is those the dramatic moments become rather silly. The moment that your solution to defeating the monster race that plunged the world into post apocalyptic chaos is so simple that any kid with half brain can come up with it.That's just sooooo bad. Writers shame on you. Expand

The premise of theJohn Krasinski took a break from his comedic roles to direct the horror film, A Quiet Place. Starring alongside his wife, Emily Blunt, the movie marked a departure from his usual style and a foray into the horror genre. The premise of the movie, set in a post-apocalyptic 2020 where the world has been overrun by monsters that hunt by sound, is not entirely original but it is executed extremely well. The Abbott family, Lee (Krasinski), Evelyn (Blunt), Regan (Simmonds), Marcus (Jupe) and Beau (Cade Woodward) must use sign language to communicate and with one of them being deaf, it becomes second nature. The family must stick together after a tragic accident causes their numbers to shorten, but with a newborn on the way, things won’t be easy. The use of sound is a major factor in the success of the movie, with silence and musical cues being used sparingly and cleverly. The small cast all perform confidently, with Millicent Simmonds being cast in part because of her being deaf to add authenticity. The movie is creepy and at times, seat-grippingly so, with moments that don’t require sound or dialogue to elevate them. The movie had a snappy 90-minute runtime and was a bucketload of fun, but there were moments that didn't entirely work for the reviewer, such as the undercooked subplot of giving birth, and the conclusion was good but not as satisfying as the reviewer had hoped.
_____________________________

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Suspensefully made dystopian horror sci-fi film starring the wonderful and beautiful Emilly Blunt. The film begins after the events of an invasion by horrific beings from outer space. In the course of the film, the protagonists have to prove their strengths and weaknesses to the invaders from space and it turns out that despite all caution and prevention, fate is not always kind to them, just like in real life. The CGI's are in the upper range and the suspense is maintained until the last minute. At the end of the movie you wish for more, what's next, is there a happy ending or is it just going to get worse?! That's probably why a sequel was shot two years later, which is also very good and roughly shows the beginnings of the invasion. Another third film is already being planned, which is very gratifying. I hope again with the amazing Emilly Blunt and the same director. The solid and technically good directing by the director John Krasinski is expressly worth mentioning here. All in all a very good and exciting film, which shines with a solid story and its main actors. Expand

Well, the director of 'A Quiet Place' is challenging that notion with a 90 minute movie which feels like it's over 2 hours. A Quiet Place has its strengths in the second half of the film which is intense, gripping and absolutely wonderful. However, the first part of the movie suffers from lazy writing, dragged sequences and a high level of tedious scenes and conversations which barely create intrigue for the viewer. But don't worry, wait a little longer and the story really picks up, and the movie slowly blends into a wonderful, heartfelt piece of cinema which emphasises to authoritarian or dystopian ideas into a realistic and quiet scenario. A very interesting idea for the film, although perhaps not a new one, there have already been so many varieties of aliens that you can’t remember. However, the presentation itself, that almost the entire film takes place in complete silence, is already very mesmerizing. John Krasinski and the crew made good use of all that silence to keep the tension going. Also, very stupid moments of the plot are very striking, because of which you catch a facepalm on yourself. However, A Quiet Place is a great movie with amazing actors and an interesting story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie shows the struggle of a family to survive in a world, that has fallen victim to a at first unknown catastrophe. Setting is the family's farm house, the sourounding fields, silos and pathways, and the nearby town. Everything looks abandoned, no one dares to raise their voice or even make the slightest sound. Communication is based on sign language. Soon the reason is revealed - ferocious looking, terrifyingly fast moving creatures with bladelike claws prowl the woods, killing anything, that carelessly makes a noise, as their only sense seems to be their fantastic hearing capability.

If you accept all the premises, the movie is very thrilling. Except that they are unacceptable. The superiority of the creatures, that seem to have wiped out most of mankind, is not convincing at all. They are triggered by the slightest sound that could have been caused by anything from miles away. Miraculously they seem to be able to recognise, if the sound was caused by humans. Breathing on the other hand, a sound definitly caused by living beings, is unproblematic, especially when close to them. Also they are easily distracted from their primary target, when confronted with another noise source. No sign of intelligence, not the slightest.

At least a few methods come to mind how to safely trap and kill them, except no one's got the guts - and that's the actual horror in this horror movie. Sad.

They took this high-concept and stuck to it without really doing enough to go above the concept. Worse still are the grating plot potholes that are dutifully ignored by the filmmakers. This family survive 3 months and basically are alone in the world but do some really stupid things. Plus, how did the threat survive with their main prey all but gone. Anyways the film looks great and sounds spectacular, possibly the best sound design I've ever heard, which is important for a film about not making a sound! Incredibly well acted. Pacing not perfect, for a 90-minute film it could lose 10 minutes, I looked at my phone a few times. Overall, it is worth seeing but it is very unrelenting and bleak, the filmmakers were not from the Hitchcock school of film. Expand

Expand

Its even disorientating at times but that only adds to the intended sense of being on high alert, as it were. Its interesting how certain sounds are noticed because of the lack of dialogue - something that might really bother, or bore even, some people but I liked the concept as something a little different, although I imagine its been done before in older films. I felt that Millicent Simmonds gave a particularly good performance, as the teen daughter Regan. She shows her fears and worries through her facial expressions well. This film won't appeal to all, its maybe not amazing or especially memorable as such but its certainly good and so, for what it is, I thought it was a well made film, hence I would recommend it, yes. In February 2014 and June 2016, the Krasinskis become parents of Hazel and Violet: John panics and belatedly wonders if he can be a good enough father struggling just to keep his daughters alive in a nightmare world. The answer is positive, so much so that in 2018 this couple, model of parenthood, shoots a post-apocalyptic survival horror that should metaphorize the above. Among references to Romero, Shyamalan and Carpenter, "A Quiet Place" imposes a rather pro-life message and a superhuman suspension of disbelief, the most sci-fi element of the film (soundproofing with sound-absorbing material: a concept unknown to humanity of the 21st century, plus a lot of other nonsense).

In the beginning nothing much happensI watched A Quiet Place because the sequel is coming out soon and I so wanted to catch the train and see this work. Quite an interesting little film. An original idea that probably won't suit everyone. In the beginning nothing much happens for a long time and it's more about building the atmosphere. There is hardly any talking in the film, which pretty much describes the title of the film, and you really need peace and quiet for this film. The pace is slower at first, but towards the end it starts to pick up and we do get some action. Probably the best thing about the film, or at least the thing I liked the most, was the monsters. Weird creeps that react to sound so the main characters have to live quietly to keep these bastards from having them for dinner. Overall, an interesting idea and for me a good horror film that I can recommend. Expand

A pretty simple premise for a horror/thriller but pulled off well due to it's clever script and it's ability to keep the tension high.

Better than Birdbox because it is more intense and exciting. Basically, people in this fictitious scenario are hardly allowed to make any noises.

The result is that as a viewer you always hold your breath briefly when the protagonists make a mistake.

The creatures are really cool and make disgusting noises.

That hardly or not at all does not matter, but one should have done without the music, at least for the most part, as it always felt unsuitable and just wanted to build up tension too much (not really necessary in the context of this film).

My biggest criticism of the film is that some situations just feel too constructed and sometimes you can't quite understand why the creatures are there after all or again.

So it could certainly have been packaged better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sadly, a Quiet Place is cliché, almost cringeworthy at times, with a plot that does not compel and an ending that does not engage. Within 10 minutes, after the initial scene in the store, I was taken out of the film: I cannot believe in an Alien invasion-apocalypse-thing that someone would leave their child behind in the store. An Alien invasion conveyed to us through newspaper clippings stuck to a board. I never particularly felt tense or scared throughout the runtime, and the concept leaves a million plotholes or ideas in the viewer's mind. However, the film is beautifully crafted and the scene with the fireworks is incredibly well done. But this section is just a beautiful needle in a very uninteresting haystack. By the end, you will still have no idea what the laws of the world actually are! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I may be being very generous with this 7, but come on. If you are a spectator looking for entertainment and moments of tension, you will likely like the movie, even love it, but if you are more meticulous and like a really well-constructed story, you will be disappointed with several plot points. I will list some things that bothered me, to say the least. -They are living in a world where you cannot waver, or it was already, they have to be very solitary and meticulous, and for that everyone who lives with a child knows, that for that to happen, one cannot take their eyes off them 1 second, the boy taking the ship was not the girl's fault, it was the adults' fault. - For a couple who just lost their child, getting pregnant around 3 months later is just ridiculous and unacceptable. - if the noise attracts the monsters, but when there is a lot of constant noise (like in the river) they don't pay attention, why not create an atmosphere with a lot of constant noise to live ?! so the constant worry of making mistakes and dying becomes much less. - how do they store all that amount of corn and can't make a noise? has anyone already walked through a corn field, already threshing an ear? unacceptable, a fruit plantation would be much more consistent. - Another thing that bothered me a lot was the lack of defense of the environment in which they live, they could very well have built numerous traps and "safe zones" over the course of 1 year. Some may think I'm being too boring, but these are the things that support the narrative. Strengths: - Emily Blunt's performance - Photography - the suspense scenes generate a certain tension - the film ends before they make more mistakes. kkk Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What is this. This movie was just the main cast running away from those things, the silence was just awkard and no thrillers at all, the end seem a little rushed because the dad dies they go, the beasts find them and blah blah blah, they shouldnt just made it all in one movie, I feel like the sequel is gonna be way more boring since they already know how to fix the "beasts". The cast wasnt that much of good actors, probably because 3-4 of them are kids/teens but the script also seem dumb, like whats the reasons behind all of this?? If we compare this movie to one thats similiar, "Bird Box" (not advertising) they had a reasons and ended. This movie was just dissapointing and had no thrillers. Oh and how the f*ck did she give birth to a baby in a bathtub without screaming????? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I give the film a 2/10 namely because it was an interesting concept. Back in the eighties, Hollywood dabbled in films that were unique and driven by a fascinating take/premise on a given subject. So when I first heard about this film, I was intrigued and being a fan of suspense, of Alien and Aliens, I was curious while at the same time skeptical. I tend to find over-praised films suspicious. A Quiet Place has only the unique concept going for it. Beyond that, I found the story boring and lacking in any sense. As soon as I started to watch it, I began to shake my head. These creatures are attracted to sound and here we have a little boy running around an abandoned grocery store. Okay. He is bare foot but god, these parents are idiots. The movie is using this character only for the sake of exposition. Why would a scene like this exist otherwise? We need to set up the situation. Fine but if this was a realistic situation, these parents wouldn't need to explain that something was too loud when his toy is taken form him. In fact, I would be very certain such parents would use punitive measurements to stifle the childlike element of play in a raucous and irresponsible kid. Yet the movie must movie on. Yet after he is lectured, his sister, behind their parents' back hands him the toy. Great. Okay. And the boy has to have the batteries which are in reach and from there on, I knew what was going to happen. You don't have to watch too many movies to predict the results of all this. Again, I admire the film's premise but it leaves me with too many questions. For one, why not create a soundproof house? How can the creatures blindly navigate through forests? Do they use sonar and if so, why can't they use this to find their food/prey? And if they are not present near waterfalls, wouldn't it work out that emulating the sound of a waterfall be helpful in protecting one's family? There are other questions but these are only my handful that bothered me. Otherwise, I couldn't finish the film. After what must have been the shortest baby-birthing moment in history, the night of suspense continues on for this family. There is a tap left on. There is flood into the sound proof room. There is a nail in a place where a nail shouldn't be. The screenplay needs to happen but the lack of plausibility was getting on my nerves and I switched it off. I would avoid this one unless turning off your brain is easily done.

Again, a fascinating premise but nothing beyond it. Other than the regret and guilt and sorrow hanging over the loss of idiot boy who had to have his toy, you know little about these characters. They have no other motivations other than survive but even in Alien, the group of space riggers had distinct personalities or backgrounds. Who were these people before the invasion? You never get to find out. Frustrating and bland at the same time. Pass.

The movie is suspenseful, brutal, and very effective. I was afraid to eat my Skittles while watching this in the theatre because I didn’t want to make any noise! However, I do have some problems with it. I think you see the monsters way too much for them to be very scary, and there are some things that happen in the movie that just don’t make any sense. The design of the monsters I also found to be quite unoriginal. I feel like I’ve seen elements of these monsters in a million other movies. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's go from the beginning. Creatures like shown in this movie could have never occupoed earth. They are stupid and highly vulnerable to loud noises. It's easy to lure them wherever you want and make them harmless with simple radio. So the setting is impossible. Okay, let's forget about that, and they did it. Killed most of the people on earth or in the area. Next thing. This family woudl have never lived this long. They act stupid. All the time. We could have justify their behaviour by telling that they had no resources or qualification. But they managed to create huge security system with lights and complicated radio rig. So they had no safe room? Is it that hard to make soundproof cellar? Harder then all the things they have? They have radio. Why do they need to have fireworks as a lure for creatures? Just to risk their lives? Why not to use simple sound system as a lure? Their father is intelligent enough to make a deaf-aid. And that's just big things. And okay sometimes director makes a play that has value not in terms of interest and plot but with visuals and complicated references or transfering interesting idea of the creator. And no. It uses all the cheap cliche from any horror film ever. So stupid that it's not even scary. Not telling anything about the characters or any particular story. And main idea is that kids will make you killed. Highly recommend to not to watch it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie builds up the tension well. It's a bit hard to believe that the people surviving the invasion of these monsters would actually be so effing stupid, but hey if they had any smarts at all there would be no need for a sequel in which they wipe out the monsters. When you start to think about it, a whole lot of things just don't add up in this story. Stupid, stupid people. The monsters only react to sound, no smell, no sight, kill only to kill, not to eat. How the hell did they survive and how did they manage to terrorize humankind into near extinction? Of course they managed, because humankind is nothing more than a bunch of morrons, right? What could be the weakness of these monsters? Oh please!
Granted they're nice baddies at the start of the movie when you hardly see them at all, but near the ending it gets rather preposterous. The whole thing is a poorly thought through joke. But it was nice for the first half of the movie, hence a 5, which is very generous when you start thinking the world that was portrayed. Just after seeing the movie you'd probably rate it a bit higher, but if you start trying to make sense of it and start thinking about what you actually saw it just all falls to pieces and a 3 would be more than adequate. There is a LOT wrong with this movie. Things that just don't make sense. Leave your thinking hat at home, you won't be needing it if you want to enjoy the movie.

Take notes, you so-called horror film writers and directors. The primary requirement for a horror movie to be good is to be thrilling and being intense. Not just cheap scares or silence followed by an incomprehensibly loud noise. .
.
Good : "A Quiet Place" directed by John Krasinski is a genuine and tensed horror/thriller. It has a unique premise and backstory. The setup for the story has been done well. The performances by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, along with the child actors is awesome. The direction of Krasinski is "awesomer". The tension and the thrills were genuinely great. That's something I have not seen in a horror/thriller for a long time. Speaking of horror, what we take as "scary" is totally subjective. If you're watching this to get some jumpscares or to see a ghost, this ain't your movie. There are many moments that give us the feeling of getting into the jaws of death, unexpectedly. Those were some real thrills. And, the characters know what's gonna kill them and why. So, whenever such things take place, the tension is amplified (no pun intended) and whether or not they are gonna succeed at the particular moment keeps you terrified. For me, anything that keeps you terrified is real horror than some ghosts and jumpscares, so I got my "horror" part in this movie, after a long time. It's not that it doesn't have any false scares, just one or two though. Whenever something goes wrong, you can feel the s**t happening. That's some incredible directing. .
.
Mixed : The final moments were a bit less satisfying for a thrill ride we witnessed for the majority of the movie. There are some notable plot holes regarding some sounds making no significance in the context of the movie's own rules, the way a lot of food, medicines don't get used up after such a long time, the crops being harvested (without any noise?) etc. The movie also shows certain stuff as if it was trying to say "see this is a plot device, see see SEE!" and it actually is so. .
.
Bad : One plotline with Emily Blunt and her "youngest child" was something that made no sense to be honest as per the movie's own rules and was obvious to play out in the later part of the movie. The way it was playing out was damn good, but we knew that something was up regarding this. .
.
Conclusion : I cannot overlook the flaws but man, I had a great time watching the movie. It's flawed but intriguing. It's probably the first Krasinski movie (directorial) I liked so much. .

It's amazing that Jim Halpert from the Office had a horror movie masterpiece in him. It's something you'd never expect from him. Ever. Needless to say, this movie IS a masterpiece, with a solid premise that really excites anyone who hears it. A Quiet Place will have you gripping your seat from start to end. It's brilliantly acted, directed, and co-written by John Krasinski, proving that he may be a director to reckon with in the near future. Emily Blunt gives a solid performance and so does the kids, who you'd think would be the worst part of a movie like this, but they're really good and super believable. The story (besides the incredible premise) is brief but brings power with every scene that is put on screen. You will quickly care for this family, more so than other on-screen characters in other horror movies. Plus, it is clear that the writers played situations cleverly, using spoken words only when the situation actually calls for it. No one's an idiot (actually one exception but spoiler) and the family is betrayed in a way that makes you believe they're real, which is really hard for the horror genre. With amazing pacing, and use of sound, A Quiet Place manages to build tension in the most brilliant way possible -- and Marco Beltrami's nail biting score only adds to this tension building. The creatures are nothing short of terrifying, and could possibly land a place next to Alien and Predator in terms of design and pay off. The movie uses sound so excellently and only makes for a more intense experience. If there is one downside, it's that some of the scares seem really cheap and I mean REALLY cheap. Plus, there is a few (TINY) parts that could be considered plot holes, but they're easily forgiven -- same with the CHEAP scares, because it is as I said before, the horror takes second and the drama takes priority. At its heart, A Quiet Place is a family drama about humans (a family) having to adapt to a new and dangerous threat, while also teaching a valuable lesson on family and the importance of the sense that is sound. You should watch it, then watch it again, because this movie deserves it, and other horror movies should be taking note, because THIS is how GOOD HORROR is done. Expand

The editing and cinematography lends to the extreme degree of tension that the sound design creates. The performances all-round are fantastic and very believable, surprising given the extreme nature of the situation. I was however disappointed in some of the logic and decision making throughout. Also, an important reveal and the pacing of the action at the beginning took away from some of the tension and psychological impact. Expand

We all know you need to keep silent when there are aliens roaming outside. But, what if you needed to do this all the time to stay alive? That's what makes this movie so great, bear the unbearable...

Great script, brilliant acting (how did they make the kids perform like that), great story. Just a great little indie horror film, which is a must see.

Unlike other boring movies with CGI, this movie shows the monsters are shown for maybe 2 min out of the 90 minutes running time

If you want to watch it - watch it online, so that you can forward through this garbage within 5 minutes.

Thank me later for this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's well crafted, suspenseful, solidly acted, blah, blah. But the storyline is just so lacking. It's basically centered around creatures (from God knows where) that hunt by sound... Open with a post apocalyptic landscape, cue creature terror, an hour of obligatory human foibles/stupidity and finally, the sooo easy to predict weapon against creatures is found. That's it. They could have just as easily devised a movie about creatures that hunt on smell, calling in An Odorless Place. My old college roommate's farts would be used to overwhelm the creature's senses...in the end. Hard to believe it got such a high "meta" score and 83% approval on the tomato website. But then again, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure got 78% approval there. Expand

Ao mesmo tempo que me surpreendi com a qualidade da trama, vi também um filme que explora muito bem sua incrível premissa, juntando a tensão, drama e a inquietação, nunca pensei que o poder do som poderia ser tão assustador.

Not only this, but the family keep making horribly stupid decisions throughout the movie. I hate those kind of flicks where stuff happens only because the stupid characters allowed it to happen. A hugely overrated movie. Don't bother to watch it, unless you (really) don't care about plot holes. Expand

Psycho, The Shining, Silence of the Lambs, Seven, all part of the history of cinematic psychological thrillers, all leaving a mark on audiences, and now they are joined by A Quiet Place.

The film, without a prologue, tells the story of the Abbott family of four as they navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. Actor-Director John Krasinski crafts this film with a focus not on the “scares”, not on the “creatures” but on the aspect of the narrative’s core family, all the while ensuring that every single beat the narrative sets up is used and paid-off later in the film.

By placing emphasis on the family, Krasinski gives this film a level of intimacy that heightens the fear-filled experience of the overall picture.

A Quiet Place’s success rests on three elements of production.

The first is the shoulders of the cast due to the fact that the narrative from a macro-level is a simple survival film, but on the micro-level, the film is about the family and their connection with each other, their love for each other, and how far parents would go to protect their own.

Emily Blunt delivers what it by far her most powerful and genuine performances of her career as the matriarch of the family.

Having to worry about giving birth to a new baby, while dealing with the loss of her youngest son, Blunt has to present a very dynamic, layered, and complex character in the most grounded way possible.

Blunt’s performance should force the Academy to nominate performances in genre films more often because she deserves a nod for this.

The two younger actors Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds in many ways upstage their older counterparts.

Millicent Simmonds, who is actually deaf, brings in a concreteness to her performance and a reality that aids the film feel more grounded. Simmonds plays the feisty rebellious daughter who is trying to figure out her place within her family and trying to come to terms with the loss of her youngest brother while partly blaming herself for his passing and fearing that her father dislikes her.

Noah Jupe’s innocence and heart also offers the film its vulnerability that is needed for a narrative like this. His character’s arc as a young boy having to grow up and the fear and struggle to learn to be the man of the family.

John Krasinski’s maturity and ability to juggle three positions (actor, director, and producer), also delivers a heart-felt performance as the family’s patriarch.

In a touching scene, Blunt’s Evelyn asks Krasinski’s Lee, “Who are we if we can’t protect them?” – a question that resonates in this day and age with the world being a dark and hopeless place.

Krasinski, a father of two, clearly brings forth his human and fatherly fears and infuses it into every single scene in the film.

The second aspect that brings forth A Quiet Place’s success is its intricate sound design and sound mixing. Creating sonic envelopes, a dynamically layered soundscape that shifts perspectives to enrich the audience’s experience within the film, the sound designers and sound mixers strike a home run with their work on this feature.

Sound in the film is the enemy of this family, it is the antagonist of the film in many ways which makes the narrative quite interesting.

The final element that ensures this film becoming a film listed in top psychological thriller lists, is its universal ideology.

Sure, Krasinski has stated that the film is about what parents would do to protect their own, but deep down the film is more than that.

The film, with sound being the thing that brings about danger, tackles how families sometimes avoid speaking to each other in fear of hurting one another.

The father who won’t forgets to remind his daughter that he loves her, the mother that can’t get over how in her heart she feels that she failed her son, the son who doesn’t want to take over his father’s role, and the daughter who wants to be a leader and not let herself be labeled by her disability.

This layer brings such a reality to the film that will hit you in your core.

A Quiet Place is a must-see, not as a psychological thriller, not for the adrenaline rush, but for its masterful craftsmanship as a film about the need for communication and the importance of family.

(It comes as no surprise that these very same people are responsible for such things as Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, and the like.) Virtually every scene is marred by some form of idiocy. Here are a few I'd like to point out:

The characters in this film are not people who would survive the "monster apocalypse" for more than a week. They’re far too careless in watching over their kids and far too inconsistent about the details of survival they choose to notice, much less deal with.

There's a nail in the middle of a step on the basement stairs. How did it get there? How long has it been there? How does a laundry bag turn this into a hazard? Try pulling a nail halfway out of a 2x4 with a strip of handkerchief, or burlap, and see how that goes.

I personally stepped on a nail as a young kid. It hardly hurt at all. But by the reaction of the wife you'd think she had a leg amputated. OK, pregnant women ARE more sensitive to pain but give me a break.

If they go so far as to put marks on the floor of the house to show where it's safe to walk, (presumably where the floorboards don't creak), why do they leave pictures and paintings on the walls that could be knocked down, making noise, and attracting monsters?

Dad and son walking after dark with no lights. The youngest son had batteries for a toy rocket so why no batteries for flashlights? And later in the film everybody suddenly has working flashlights. Very convenient.

Why no sound-proof room? Dad is an engineer, right?

Wife is about to give birth. They had at least 9 months to prepare (and we know that because the opening scenes tell us it's over a year since the monsters arrived) but still no sound-proof room. Wife is supposed to be an MD so you would think that planning ahead would come naturally.

Crying baby. Sound insulation: an old mattress over the top of the stairs. OK, well, in the room under the mattress they put the baby in a wooden box to contain baby's crying. Use oxygen line so baby doesn't suffocate. Then, for some reason, when a monster shows up, the baby's box lid is off. (Apparently no one responsible for this film ever heard of aboriginal peoples pinching the noses' of babies to stop them crying.) I'm still curious as to where they're going to find enough oxygen to keep baby in a box for a year or two till it learns to keep quiet.

Electricity for lights and radios is coming from where? It's not from the local power plant because when the plant operators disappear in any kind of apocalypse the plant will automatically shut down within an hour or two because no operator inputs. Trust me, that's how power plants work.

A basement room starts filling with water. No idea where the water is coming from.

Family appears to have a big field full of growing corn. Don't see any other natural source of food anywhere. Reminds me of the old-time trappers along the Hudson. Had nothing to eat all winter but rabbits. Died of malnutrition.

Why are there kids in the film? Because kids can always be replied upon to do exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time. Yes, it's a kid who apparently saves the day in the end, but by that point I was long past caring.

People will say, hey, it's just some horror flick. Turn off your brain and enjoy. My problem is turning off my brain doesn't help when the idiocies are this rampant.

[Initially, I was going to give this film a 5 or 6, but as I wrote the review I got so irritated that a 3 was the best I could do. And I'm being generous.]
