A poetic and intense story about friendship, family, death, boldness and abnegation in the context of war. The movie really shines in my opinion for its ability to give precise proportion of time to storytelling, silence, roaring fear, moments of comradeship and plain jokes.
Terrific acting performances for both George MacKay (playing as Scholfield) and Dean-Charles Chapman (as Blake). Their interactions embellish their respective roles and manage to craft a touching bond.
Amazing work from Sam Mendes and his team for the shooting, the colours, the sound-design, the editing and the overall atmosphere. Thank you too, Thomas Newman, for this notable soundtrack. '1917' is not a film with many plots and sub-plots, in fact it doesn't tell much of anything, but it does take us into a very dark moment in the history of mankind in our modern and contemporary times. It's more a movie to live than to watch. The film clearly lacks a 'must-see' label.

i rarely rate movies 10 out of 10 but this war movie unlike many others has some uniqueness which again thanks to the direction and the places they chose to film, I highly recommend to give it try.

It follows the same images of WWI you've probably seen dozens of times, the characters, although walking through trauma, are mostly flat. The Germans are just plain evil henchmen getting mowed down or just plain insidious whenever the chance arises (as per usual).
I really don't see how this movie is supposed to be special, once you take the incredible camera work away, it becomes a desolate wasteland of caricatures.

End to end, thisThis movie is a love letter to old-school storytelling and cinematography in particular. From the opening shot to the final cut, there was only one single absolutely justified disruption in the viewpoint of the audience. End to end, this brutal mission was a singular journey through blasted hell scapes, lush meadows, dark caverns, and erupting fields of fire. It is truly a master class in filmmaking to seamlessly tell a story in a single cut. The mission itself is the point, where the will to live and save lives, to sacrifice for the greater good, can infect even the most nonchalant of protagonists. In turn, such sacrifice can lead to inner peace and resolution of old hurts. There are moments of utter terror where our heroes are running for their lives and complete peace where they take a moment to enjoy the miracle of life itself. But all in all, this is one unforgettable war story, told in a single sweeping vision. Expand

Same for Andrew Scott, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth and Richard Madden who jolted the movie with energy in the few scenes they were in. In the age of the cell phone, TikTok, meme & the quick & dirty convenience of it all, it's no wonder certain directors pine for the big screen.

And if there's ever a movie made for that big screen, it's the cinematic masterpiece, 1917.

Between the direction of Sam Mendes as well as his writing along w Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the immensely massive cinematography from living legend Roger Deakins, to the tick tock of a ticking clock score by Thomas Newman & the burning heart of British Lance corporal William Schofield played by George MacKay; their collaboration created a singular unique film which slows the heart as it races into the next second & then melts to a chill all the while it's exploding.

There are a rare breed of film which fully submerge you into another world that once the closing credits roll & you walk out of the theatre in a daze, you're still there, in that other world.

1917 is that film.

And it's befitting to be the last great film released just before the pandemic & theatre shutdowns. If you missed it, purchasing the largest television you can afford is apt & necessary. After all, 1917 was made for IMAX, not iPhone. Run don't walk to view this instant classic, tick tock tick tock.

The one-shot technique is executed well. The action scenes are harrowing. The settings in the battlefields are vivid. The film excels at capturing the brutal and dreadful nature of war. main drawback to this movie is that it focuses on the technical aspects at the expense of a good storyline. The film invests little time in its characters and their backgrounds, as a result of the focus being on the protagonists quest to accomplish their mission. Without that connection to the characters, remaining engaged was difficult. 1917's visuals and technical aspects made it a good war film. However, it falls short of greatness due to a lack of a compelling storyline Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A movie that shows just how horrific but also how heroic our soldiers were during the First World War. Thing about this movie that makes it work so well is that the majority of the movie is all across one take. So from the start to the end, You are following these two young soldiers, these two young lads go through literal hell and all the time your watching it, your biting your nails and on the edge of your seat hoping that they don't get ambushed. The moments where the characters are resting in a open area, you as the audience member are watching around to see if there is anyone there the characters have missed. Almost as if we as the audience are the third member of the group. Fantastic movie well worth a watch! Expand

The 'single-shot' style puts us right in the action as we follow two British soldiers tasked with warning a battallion that the attack they are planning is a German trap design to lure them in. The set design is simply brilliant, the dead horses, rotten corpses embeded in the dirt, destroyed trees and houses makes it clear that the war has not just taken its toll on the land, but became a part of it.

The story-telling is another major highlight as are its characters, they are flawed, make silly mistakes but they are also compassionate, kind and with loved ones that they hope they will all be returning to, even if that increasingly becomes a vain hope - ultimately they are human.

Ultimately it is a masterpiece in story-telling that anyone who is passionate about cinema should see at least once in their life-time.

It brings you closer to the action where the viewer follows the actions of a two soldiers that have the order to stop a battle. The biggest attraction of this movie is however the theme of isolation throughout their campaign. That feeling of isolation is conveyed in a believable and immersive way. The cinematography is one of the greatest in recent history, but the plot is unfortunately a little bit shallow and the movie has also a (misplaced) melancholic sentiment. Two British Army corporals, William Schofield and Tom Blake (George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, respectively) are sent to carry a note to stop the offensive of another English battalion on German lines that he believes are in retreat, when in fact the Germans fell back there to ambush him. A true suicide mission, stimulated however by the incentive of Blake's reunion with his brother in that battalion.

1917 is an astonishing immersive experience in the horrors of the trench warfare of World War I, filmed in a (almost) shot sequence that accompanies the protagonists at all times, so the film takes place practically in real time. At certain times, the warlike character gives way practically to horror movies. The anecdote, then, is minimal, as well as the characters. The power of images, sound and music (by Thomas Newman) is prodigious. Roger Deakins' photography (multi-award winning, as well as the film in general) is beautiful and his twists are fundamental in creating the different climates of the film. There is a nocturnal sequence that is simply anthological because of its tension, its aesthetics and the variety of feelings and sensations that it brings into play and produces.

Some critics have objected to this film by the eclectic Sam Mendes two central aspects that in my opinion are virtues. One of them is that the adventures of the protagonists and the sequence shot in motion resemble the perception of the film to the experience of a video game. And will it not be the other way around? Video games simply don't reflect the experience of war and especially now with its remote and virtual control aspects? The First War was a labyrinthine trench warfare.

The other criticism is the lack of "personal history" of the protagonists, which would take away psychological depth. 1917 in this sense resembles Dunkirk: it addresses its characters in media res, that is, in the middle of the battle front. Well, I must say that this "lack" and the simplicity of their motivations places the protagonists in the shoes of true "anonymous soldiers."

1917 is one of those films that one regrets not having seen in the cinema, a cinematographic display with capital letters at the service of a war story where despair and duty go hand in hand.Astonishing immersive experience in the horrors of the trench warfare of World War

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very good movie. The characters have good chemistry, the scenes are an even mix of depressing and beautiful, and the effects are just amazing. I saw this movie in IMAX, and it did not disappoint. I ended up really liking the main character, and the deaths throughout were really affecting. I also loved how the film tackled the uselessness of war, showing in harrowing detail how many lives were lost for nothing. The way the movie ends in an almost exact replica of the first shot, and reminds you only a day has passed, really makes you think about the endless circle that war feels like. Its a little too long, and a couple of the guest stars felt a little forced, but it was a good movie overall. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now, before I begin this review, I just want to say some things I didn’t like about this film. I found that the dialogue was a little stiff at some point, and didn’t really feel genuine. As a result, I found myself not being able to form much of a connect with the characters of the film. But ultimately, I have not been able to stop thinking about this film since I had watched it. This movie is a masterpiece, in pretty much every form. The whole movie is made to look like it is one long take, and some of the transitions of the film are truly seamless. They did a really good job of not making the camera feel restricted, and instead chose to push the cinematography of each scene, which really impressed me. My main concern coming into this movie was that the narrative structure would fall short, mainly because of the fact that they would not be able to cut between scene. However, I was pleased to say that I was proven wrong. The writing for this film is fantastic. Each scene never feels slow or dragged out, but instead holds a consistent level of tension, making the audience feel like the characters are constantly in danger, because ultimately, they are.
I would also like to make note that the set design for this film are some of the best I have ever seen. Each scene is composed of visually breathtaking set locations, which are dripping with atmosphere. My favourite scene of the whole movie is the scene where the protagonist is running through a destroyed town at night, where the only source of light is flares being shot up into the sky, casing shifting shadows across the whole location. It look absolutely amazing, and I was left speechless after watching that scene, and that is the kind of experience that the film provides for the viewer.
The movie is truly breathtaking in almost every aspect. I cannot recommend this movie enough, as it was such a privilege for myself to watch and enjoy.

Compelling visuals and masterful technical filmmaking from cinematography to editing to sound mixing - all fantastic (although, some of the "invisible cuts" were blatantly obvious)
The fact that it's based on Sam Mendes' grandfathers memoirs also makes it all the more compelling. But it has many drawbacks not the least of which is that the single cut style never stops feeling like a gimmick in this film - unlike in Birdman where you're absorbed into the story - so the film itself never stops quite feeling like a gimmick either.
It also suffers from a lack of having much to say as the plot is a rather basic A B C plot with no surprises or messages to make you think in the least. Just a standard story with nothing new or original to say. Now, it tells that story well but it's not particularly compelling in any way if you've seen other more masterful war movies. To call 1917 a war film may not be entirely fair or accurate either as it feels much more akin to a thriller. But even then, it's not quite thrilling enough to be a thriller so perhaps just a war drama?
It's a masterfully made film with very few technical flaws but with many, many storytelling flaws. Far from a bad film, but still almost just as far from being great - definitely good though, just unfortunately not much more than good.

There isn’t any unnecessary shot in this…, no I’ll have to say this is a perfect masterpiece without having any unnecessary 1/1000 shot.

spoiler below:
-----------------------------------------

First of all, Roger Deakins has accomplished absolutely transcendent work using the one-take technique. But I often see that not many people recognize the movie’s well-organized plot. Schofield is a soldier who doesn’t have any certain direction of life just like many other soldiers. He's just tired of long-lasting war. I think his journey can also be considered as a journey of asking. He has to ask people to get to Colonel MacKenzie because the map is useless for him. The plot is very well designed in a symmetrical way. In the end, he runs along the trench line, not toward the enemy, and finally finds out that his way should be home.

p.s.
-"I'm only going over Jordan, I'm only going over home"
- When Blake died two soldiers appear to Schofield. One was short and little fat, and the other was tall and skinny just like Blake and Schofield. This scene shows that this film is really about ordinary soldiers.
-Unlike World War II, World War 1 didn't have any specific bad guy like Hitler, it was just a difference of ideology. This is why 1917 is different from all other war movies.

I'd only suggest this if you're interested in this movie if you don't enjoy 1917 I can respect that.

This movie is 10 times better than my second favorite movie and I'd only suggest good movies and videogames to people when there interested.

in my opinion, it was worthed my money watching it a few months after launch and rented this movie once.

A very simple yet compelling story told in a manner where audience were immersed in a wide open field yet a very claustrophobic feel. The pre-production prep should’ve been so grueling. The blocking was phenomenal. The timing of the shots to make sure the sun is covered by the clouds requires a lot of dedication.

Personally, my favorite part of the film is the deserted city inhabited by the Germans. Deakins is really a master of light. The timing of the flares just to make sure they film the shadows waving through George Mackay is perfect. There is nothing like it. There is nothing like 1917 and we, as viewers, are blessed to have it.

It was really easy to spot where the movie was cut up and sewn back together. The film picked up for me after half way. With some really nice cinematography in mid to late action sections. This one is fine. The whole "continuous shot" gimmick mostly works and is technically impressive, however what is super grounded realism for the first half, becomes wildly outrageous for the second half and feels like a damned John Wick movie. Also for a film "depicting the horrors" of World War One, this is super sterile; which I understand, because it's not a gore filled horror movie, but the film loses it's footing in trying to be realistic and not wanting to be realistic enough to scare people. The first third and the last scene are amazing and totally worth the watch, toss the rest. Expand

Jaw-dropping scenes of the journey of these two soldiers across a war torn France only break for small spurts of effective pathos injections a handful of times. Otherwise, this movie is a beautiful and technically impressive ride through WWI. Being made to look like it was done in one shot puts you directly into the shoes of the soldiers but I'm not sure that makes up for the cost of losing the emotion that regular editing usually conveys. 1917 pushes the boundaries of what is possible in film making, but I just didn't connect to it quite as much as I wanted to. After 5 minutes you get the feeling, that this movie is special, because it is a long shot and clever done, where you see more and more of the dugout. After 10 minutes I was asking myself, if they are crazy, there is still no edit, and still the first shot. When do they end it? After more minutes I was looking where did they hid the edits. But this is not the only genius thing in the movie. The cameraman made a perfect job and shows you only the things, you shall see to get a certain feeling and the moods in the pictures are changing slowly...but still on one shot. Perfect. In addition you are all the time close to the protagonists. What a organisation to do it with so few shots.
And of course the actors. It is so demanding to avoid mistakes for so long and act for so long.
Ok, but there are some few things I didnt like: There were some unrealistic scenes, not only, that the germans could shoot well, but also their behaviour was not realistic.

This entire film is filmed like it is one camera shot and it is AWESOME! think one of the most impressive thing apart from the one looking shot is the AMAZING CINEMATOGRAPHY. This shouldn’t be no surprising since it is the legend himself Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049 Cinematographer). Every scene feels like a painting and it is absolutely stunning. There is a scene at night where the lighting was done in such a creative way that heighten the tension of the scene. On that note there must also be praise for the score by Thomas Newman who somehow manages to make a score that somehow manages toe elevate every scene and help tell the story. There is also some amazing sound design that manages to make the War actually scary with moments that give horror movie jump scares a run for its money. Additionally, the props and set design should also get praise for creating such large, realistic but elaborate sets to accommodate for a more natural one shot scene. Everything in this film just feels like a technical achievement. We haven’t even touched on the acting or story yet but just for the way this was filmed is already engaging enough. Nevertheless, the two main actors George MacKay as Lance Corporal William "Will" Schofield and Dean-Charles Chapma as Lance Corporal Thomas "Tom" Blake manages to do a phenomenal job in showing the horror of war and giving authentic, believable characters. The story, while relatively simple, is engaging enough to keep you invested in the objective of the main characters. They must send a message to allies stop them running into a trap. It’s simple but works well for the aim of one shot as now it makes the audience a part of the journey.

There isn’t much negative to this movie but I guess if I have to be quite nitpicky it is the fact that halfway through the movie there is a obvious cut. So this movie is actually really a two shot film. The cut was necessary to make the situation more desperate and allow for a unique change in scenery even though it was a bit of a jarring cut. Another sort of nitpick is that we don’t really get much info on the main characters. We get their names and we know what their mission is but their backstory is just given in tidbits. It goes in a Dunkirk route in which we care about these characters because of the situation they are in rather than the fact that we are invested in the characters. It can be argued that the tidbits more than gives you enough info about the characters but it’s really up to the audience in the end. Personally, I don’t find it too much of a fault but can see how others could consider it so.

Honestly my negatives are just nitpicks. This movie is amazing and it is definitely worth watching right now.

Although it sometimes results too shaky, it is thanks to George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman's performances that 1917 preserves both sombre but optimistic tones throughout the montage. In short, this is an exceptional approach to memorialise the hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War".
...
We are somewhere in France during the Trench Warfare [1915 - 1917] with a depleted British Army; the atmosphere, alongside with the dialogues, can define by itself how was life at the front: scarce water and food, despair between soldiers to go home, endless weapons and corpses scattered on the floor, and so forth. Corporals Blake and Schofield are told to attain a severe/impossible mission despite not having any reinforcements. Before achieving this goal in sending General MacKenzie [Bennedict Cumberbatch] the infamous fallback letter, both privates must penetrate the frightful No Man's Land and experience horrendous life-and-death encounters in many places.
...
Regardless of the silent second half, the absence of preeminent performers and the woozy experience of watching the film in one sole perspective director Sam Mendes and executive producers deliver an eloquent portrayal about surprising facts of the four-year global conflict. For example, both soldiers are bewildered by the superiority of the German trenches in proportions and in quality considering that historically they were far better equipped than the Allied ones which allow the audience the opportunity of a lifetime to analyse the condition millions of innocent citizens were facing. The result improves with some accurate shots at landscapes, underground warfare channels, entire villages pulverised, etcetera. I must acknowledge the last fifteen minutes of the film; it has been a long time since I spotted such an imposing ending. Countless emotions appear regardless of having reached the climax. What a masterpiece ladies and gentlemen!
...
What amazes me the most is that despite being a World War film, 1917 does not give the impression in duplicating the ordinary details of previous same-genre releases such as Hacksaw Ridge [2017]. Once Mr Gibson introduced a brief biography of Desmond Doss [the main character] he began recording some ultraviolent scenes as though you were spotting the most savage state of humankind. As an alternative, 1917 delivers some innovative procedures in creating a war film without increasing the brutal strength of instant classics as Saving Private Ryan.
...
Congratulations!
