First of all, it is a great stand alone piece: if you like thrillers, specially combined with some soft sci-fi - a la Shyamalan's Signs -, regardless of not knowing much about the Cloverfield mythology, you will have a great experience. There is a lot of mystery and the movie puts the viewer side by side with the protagonist in trying to figure things out. So if you enjoy taking the film experience similar to a game experience, where you receive cues as the movie goes and part of the fun is in trying to anticipate the branches the story can evolve into, you will have a lot of fun! If you saw Cloverfield back in 2008/9, but did not go beyond the film back them to solve to riddles and easter eggs that came out with the movie, you will have a lot of fun too, but will mostly experience the movie as a stand alone piece as well and have some difficulty connecting dots that link 10CL to the first movie. But don't get me wrong, you will have a lot of fun with it as well! This movie has a great pace, top acting, and it is really successful in making the viewer feel within the whole situation the characters find themselves in. Now, if you are a true cloverfield explorer, you will fall in love with this movie. The thing is, as with Cloverfield, what's going on in 10CL goes beyond what the movie shows. You really have to pay attention to Easter Eggs and the viral marketing campaign to figure out websites where you will find more information about the characters and the broader plot. What's in the movie is just a piece of this bigger plot. I will give a hint for those of you who want to follow this path: search for "Tagruato" and how it connects to cloverfield as a starting point. I give a 10 for this movie because, although everyone can enjoy, I understand that this movie targets, mostly, us, nerds who like playing detective with this mythology and, oh God, do they give us a lot to entertain ourselves! Other than that, linking it to the original Cloverfield in name only seems to be an odd choice (and it's certainly one that has upset people) but I think a Cloverfield anthology series is an amazing idea. At least in a couple of years when the next one inevitably comes out we'll know what to expect.

I don't know why I put off watching this film till now. It's great!

One of the best-paced and written thrillers I've seen. Although a lot of time is spent in an underground bunker, nothing feels slow or unnecessary. Also, does a good of job of including humor without boggind down the tension.

Camerawork and musical selections all complement the work. Both Elizabeth Mary Winstead and John Goodman are on their A-game, but it Goodman who steals the show with a nuanced character who can be both unnerving and sympatheric.

Dont' listen to those saying the ending is tacked on. The ending takes you completely by surprise and is a unique way to end a film like this.

The feat of creating a complex, strange, unique, and immersive world full of mysteries using the sheer power of story-telling has never been accomplished to this extent in cinema history. Not even the highly impressive The Man from Earth can match it in that regard.

Unfortunately, not everyone is able to appreciate this form of art, which is why this movie isn't talked about in the same way as, say, Alien. Which is fine, because everyone has their own tastes and preferences, and even I personally prefer movies which make use of both story-telling and visuals. However, if you are the type of person to lose sleep for days over a book that you had read in a couple of hours, and still can't escape the world that it has built even when reality comes crashing down, then this is an absolute must-watch for you. Not saying that this movie in particular will have that effect on you, but you will certainly get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

This film successfully captured and reflected the feel of the original film in its mystery and universe but also managed to maintained a unique quality throughout which was essential to its success. The original Cloverfield was unique in its narrative but also its style, this film does not follow similar but creates an experience of its own that does relate to Cloverfield but not enough to be called a direct continuation of the story told between both films. The comparisons really end at the overall post-apocalyptic event that 10 Cloverfield Lane also contains but really the significance of this film is drawn from the more contained subplot. 10 Cloverfield Lane’s three main characters exist within a more personal story that was very reminiscent of Lost as it contained a similar ominous feel throughout, a trait J.J Abrahams has become known for in his narrative structure. Bear McCreary’s soundtrack complimented the suspense of the film, fitting perfectly with the almost sci-fi nature of the drama that unfolds. The music was reminiscent of McCreary’s music on Battlestar Galactica, also a work of sci-fi and reflected a similar eerie apocalyptic overtone. The film’s scale is important to consider because there is so much potential in the universe it ultimately creates, and yet a continuation may only lead to a more generic story. Regardless of what comes next, 10 Cloverfield Lane was an experience that was unique in its drama and genre; a must-see film with an excellent story and even more interesting universe. Expand

Bad news for die-hard fans of the original, this film has absolutely nothing to do with the original movie.

Needless to say that fact hardly should tamper anyone's enjoyment of the film because it is great on its own merits. This is a film that skillfully uses tension to build into thunderclap moments that will absolutely make your mind reel. Hate how movies are full of exposition? Well here's a film that shows rather than tells you what's going on. Hate sappy character interactions and forced romance? None of that s*** here. These characters fully earn every moment and minus a few moments where I felt the film began to meander, I would say the depth of each character still kept me involved.

Overall, if 10 Cloverfield Lane is the start of a beautiful anthology of movies built by different people with new stories to tell in different ways, count me in for the long haul because I am absolutely done with both found footage and sequalitis.

Now that that's out of the way, this is going to be a completely spoiler-free review, unless you don't want to know about, um, character names. But seriously, the less you know about this movie, the better, so I'm not going to give anything away that wasn't in any of the trailers. In 10 Cloverfield Lane, a woman, Michelle, gets in a car accident and wakes up in an underground bunker. Her captor, Howard claims to have saved her life and that everyone outside the bunker is dead. Another man is also in the bunker, named Emmet, and tensions arise between the three as Howard becomes increasingly suspicious, and Emmet and Michelle mount an escape plan. While Cloverfield, was an intense, in-your-face monster flick, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a completely different beast altogether. Instead of the vast area of New York City, this movie takes place in the confines of a doomsday bunker, so the scares come from paranoia and suspense than a giant monster attacking the city. All three cast members are excellent in their roles, especially John Goodman as Howard. His awesomely creepy performance makes this one of his most memorable roles. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Galleger Jr. are incredible as well. You may recognize her as Wendy from Final Destination 3. Winstead's character definitely isn't a damsel in destress here; Michelle is crafty and smart like Nancy from A Nightmare on Elm Street. John Galleger Jr. also provides some witty comic relief while also seeming a bit suspicious himself. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a restrained, suspenseful and well-crafted psychological thriller that calls to mind both Misery and The Twilight Zone, and if this anthology series continues, it'll be hard to match the standards set by this and its predecessor. Very VERY good!
10 Cloverfield Lane, directed by Dan Trachtenberg is a fantastic film that can be enjoyed by anybody who enjoys thrillers. It's not necessarily a sequel to Cloverfield, but more like a spiritual successor. The two films take place in the same universe, but they more or less happen at the same time. Don't go into this movie thinking it'll be a sequel. The movie itself is fantastic, it stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Michelle, a girl who, after getting into a car crash, wakes up in a fallout shelter with a mysterious man, played by John Goodman. He claims that the air above is unbreathable, and that he quickly took her and another man, played by John Gallagher, Jr., and they have to stay underground. I absolutely love this movie; Dan Trachtenburg was an amazing director. Although this isn't a horror movie, I was scared out of my mind that something bad was going to happen at every single situation. Throughout the film, we as the viewer have literally no idea what is going on, and if this guy is sane or not. We have no idea if the man is right, the air is toxic, and we're just seeing him the wrong way, or he's batsh*t insane and the air is just fine. Every time Michelle and Howard were in one scene at the same time, I was genuinely nervous as to what would happen between the two. The main selling point of this movie is it's tension, and it brought it. Sure, the ending was pretty abrupt, but I absolutely love this film, and is easily one of my favorite movies of 2016 so far.

10 Cloverfield Lane gets a 9/10.

Well its safe to say she was wrong, the film builds suspense brilliantly from the beggining all the way through till the very end, the shocks and turns at every corner are amazing and you dont see them coming. The film really shows how monsterous and unpredictable humans can be when stuck in a bunker together, fans of the original film wont be disappointed however as near the end you do get a glimpse of the how the world is now after the orginal film ended, and its great. The cast where well picked, with a decent female lead and of course John Goodman is outstanding, you dont know whether to fear him or feel sorry for him (till the truth eventually comes out). 10 Cloverfield Lane
With my head spinning, I regrouped in the restroom. (Also with a running time of almost two hours and a large diet coke I had to use it.) While at the sink washing my hands, I hear some teenagers talking about the film. “What’s the point?” I was aghast at that statement. Did we see the same movie? The slogan on the movie poster outside the theater was “Monsters come in many forms.” John Goodman’s character Howard is the monster. It became clear at the beginning of the movie that this was much more that a man prepping for doomsday. Michelle played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead is in a car accident and awakes in a bunker chained to the wall. Yet, a key scene happens at a gas station before. Howard’s truck pulls up at the pump behind Michelle’s car. Michelle feels uncomfortable and turns around to face the other way. Perhaps the bathroom teenager has never felt this. The knowledge of something not being right, the intuition of heightened alert was felt by me in the theater. In the bunker, Michelle meets Emmett. Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.) is wounded as well. The reason for his wound is far more suspicious. Emmett had helped Howard build the bunker. When Emmett knew the proverbial **** had hit the fan, he went to the bunker. He tells Michelle that he was injured when Howard was closing the door. Was Howard being cautious or intentionally trying to keep Emmett out? When Michelle first sees the bunker, Howard tells Michelle and Emmett not to touch. Michelle notices one night at dinner that Howard is becoming agitated with Emmett. Michelle, still trying to escape, notices Howard’s keys are on his belt loop. She begins to flirt with Emmett in order to send Howard into a rage. He threatens her by cornering her against the wall. During this moment Michelle takes the keys. She attempts to escape the bunker. While she is unlocking the doors, a woman runs up begging Michelle for mercy. It is clear to Michelle at that point that Howard’s claims of apocalyptic chaos are true. This is a turning point of Michelle beginning to accept her fate. As the film progresses in the bunker a pivotal scene takes place. The group is trying to avoid boredom by doing a puzzle. The puzzle is of a cat with a snorkel getting ready to enter a fish tank. Emmett is disappointed because there are pieces missing. This symbolism must have been missed by the teenager. The missing pieces, the containment of the fish while their predator is watching, and the cat’s breathing device are all significant. The puzzle pieces are Howard’s story. He keeps talking about his daughter. He gives Michelle her clothes. He has pictures of her and things by which to remember her. At one point, the air filtration device shuts off. Michelle is required to climb into the ducts and finds herself in an electrical room. There is a window in this room. Michelle discovers the word “help” scratched into the window. She also finds an earring which she recognizes from a photo of Howard’s daughter. Michelle realizes she has let her guard down and is indeed being watched by a predator. She confides in Emmett by showing him the photo of Howard’s daughter. Emmett tells Michelle that the photo is of a girl from his high school. He also says that she went missing and was never found. Michelle realizes what is going on; Howard built a bunker not for protection, but to capture and hold his prey. Michelle enlists Emmett’s help to get supplies so that she can try to get out of the bunker. She creates a gas mask out of a 2-liter bottle. Michelle refuses to accept her fate and begins her fight again. The teenager failed to realize that the “point” of the movie wasn’t doomsday it was Howard. Howard’s story isn’t fully developed on purpose. The viewer begins to ask questions and is kept in the dark like Michelle. The emotions that the viewer experiences during the film invoke the fear that is inherent of being human: not knowing the missing pieces of the puzzle of your predator.

“10 Cloverfield Lane,” a sensationally effective semi-sequel that bears virtually no narrative or stylistic resemblance to its predecessor.

Marking a rock-solid feature debut for director Dan Trachtenberg and screenwriters Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken (both credited for the story along with “Whiplash” writer-director Damien Chazelle), “10 Cloverfield Lane” is the rare follow-up that wasn’t even conceived with the first movie in mind. Developed for Paramount’s now-defunct Insurge Pictures genre label under the working titles “The Cellar” and “Valencia,” the film initially told a self-contained story before it was ingeniously reverse-engineered into an offshoot of the “Cloverfield” universe, all done under the sort of secrecy we’ve come to expect from the imprimatur of J.J. Abrams. (He’s credited here as a producer, while three collaborators from the first “Cloverfield” — director Matt Reeves, writer Drew Goddard and producer Bryan Burk — are listed as executive producers.)

It’s a terribly clever marketing move that will likely maximize the commercial intake of a picture that cost less than $10 million to make (and whose conveniently number-forward title will ensure excellent placement in VOD queues). Still, the studio may court some blowback from die-hard fans of the original film (which grossed $170 million worldwide on a $25 million budget), who may well reject Trachtenberg’s movie as a cynical cash grab, or take issue with the fact that it was shot on a tripod. It’d be easy enough to concur, if not for the simple fact that “10 Cloverfield Lane” is vastly smarter and more satisfying than its predecessor; every cynical cash grab should turn out this good.

Trachtenberg and his cinematographer Jeff Cutter — whose camera navigates the space with effortless ease, even when it has to squeeze inside an air shaft or down a garbage chute — treat their solitary location as both a physical refuge and a psychological trap. The lengthy midsection of “10 Cloverfield Lane” is a work of expertly modulated unease that alternates between claustrophobic suspense and doomsday panic; it’s the rare thriller in which the horror of what might be out there seems less threatening than the possibility that there may be no horror at all. For although there is persuasive, even irrefutable evidence that a cataclysmic attack has indeed taken place, the movie never allows us to forget the possibility that Howard might be a paranoid, delusional psychopath — someone who just happened to have a fully stocked shelter ready to go in case the world decided to end.

That sense of menace stems less from the occasional contortions of the script than from Goodman’s terrifying, richly fleshed-out performance. A brilliant character actor who has been on a hot streak of late — he was a memorable gargoyle in “Inside Llewyn Davis,” and brought his boisterous comic gusto to bear on “Argo,” “The Gambler” and “Trumbo” — Goodman makes Howard a memorably complicated villain. Michelle and Emmett are indebted to the man for his resourcefulness and foresight, and there are moments when Howard drops his guard to reveal a glimpse of a more reasonable, even likable person beneath the clenched, controlling surface.

But those moments don’t last, and even Howard’s hospitality feels conditional, tinged with spite, entitlement and barely suppressed rage. The more Michelle comes to grasp the nature of his particular pathology, the more she comprehends her need to escape, even if it means confronting whatever might be waiting on the other side of the door. Winstead, a seasoned scream queen and one of the most undervalued leading ladies around, emphasizes the character’s quicksilver intelligence and refusal to give up no matter how bad things get (which is often very, very bad), and she gives the second half of “10 Cloverfield Lane” its thrilling momentum as Michelle takes matters into her own hands.

Gallagher, so good opposite Brie Larson in “Short Term 12,” at once varies and complicates the dynamic between the two leads, even if Emmett’s role is necessarily the least developed of the three. Still, the psychological grounding that Trachtenberg achieves here provide more-than-sufficient ballast for the harrowing final moments, which send the movie in an appreciably wilder, more unhinged direction; rarely has “out of the frying pan and into the fire” felt more apt as a description. It would be unfair to say more, or to note exactly how “10 Cloverfield Lane” connects with “Cloverfield” — a question that matters more from a branding perspective, anyway, than a dramatic one. By the end of this tense and unexpectedly human-scaled movie, all that high-concept disaster porn feels like even more of a distant memory.

This film does have something much better than answer though, even more questions! The film starts of with Mary Elizabeth Winstead character Michelle running away from her life before being run off the road and waking up in a bunker occupied by Howard (John Goodman), who claims to have brought her there to wade out the apparent attack on the country. Also in the bunker is Emmett (John Gallagher Jr) who says he there for protection. But through several twist and turns you start to question the nature of Michelle situation, the Motivation behind her abduction and the fate of the world above the bunker. As each new revelation into what is happening is revealed the tension grows and grows. John Goodman plays his role as dooms day prepper, conspiracy nut brilliantly. The film constantly makes you re-evaluate your opinion of him going from a nut to, good Samaritan who has your sympathy, to possible someone much sinister. The film however lies mainly on the shoulders of Mary Winstead as it is through her eyes the audience watches the film and she is excellent through out. Michelle is a thoroughly engaging and resourceful character who you are one hundred percent routing for from start to finish. Emmett is also well played and will have you hoping he makes it out okay as well as being a brilliant friend for Michelle and source of irritation for Howard. The ending is as tense as the rest of the film and shows of the how bad ass Michelle is whilst adding so much more to what intrigue to what Cloverfield is and what is to come next. All round the movie is superb and as much as I hope all this will be explained, having it be what it is and making no sense with no context to what is happening is equally as entertaining. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE science fiction golden child jj abrams again super idea and a great movie.

I first saw this cool start-up movie cloverfield in 2008 and then I learned that it was a serial, and there were a total of 3 movies linked to each other with small details. After this movie I will watch the movie cloverfield paradox.

Now let's go movie. Michelle, the heroine's lover we see fighting and collecting things and going to one place but we never find out where it goes We're constantly confused throughout the movie but we take almost all the answers we just do not know where Michelle went, I think it would be nice to have information about it.

then we open our eyes in a shelter, I do not know how many hours have been left unconscious. Was it during the movie that it was invasive or not?Like Howard is bad or good. There's a constant dilemma throughout the film that can amaze you anytime A great movie full of surprises. There may already be some question marks on the entire cloverfield series that have never been squeezed into a wonderful mystery bunker that is a completely different mystery.

It's a bit confusing in the final stages and it sounds a bit absurd to me, but the movie is really nice.

The twists and turns writer put in the story and the way director executed it, hands off. The cast also did good job. You can easily connect with them. Only sad thing that I came to know was that this story isn't getting sequel as of now. This story needs a sequel but the next sequel has an entirely different story which broke my heart.

Overall, it's a great watch. Even better than the first one, though it has no connections with the first one. I would recommend it to everyone and don't get spoiled before watching it.

Typically sequels that haveWhilst 10 Cloverfield Lane is sold as a sequel, it is not a sequel in the traditional sense. J.J Abrams described it as being a blood relative to Cloverfield, with no direct links existing to its 2008 predecessor. Typically sequels that have nothing to do with the original do not have a good track record often just attempting to capitalise on the reputation of the original without having to put any effort in to creating a good film, such as Home Alone 3 and Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. But fortunately 10 Cloverfield Lane avoids this, being an effective thriller that stands apart from the original whilst still offering the same kind of horror and looming threat that made the original Cloverfield such a hit.

We open the film with a young woman called Michelle as she is driving away after seemingly breaking off her engagement. There's a few vague mentions on the radio of something going on, but before she can pay this any thought, a car crashes in to her and drives her off the road. She awakes in an empty room chained to the pipe. Eventually a man named Howard (John Goodman) enters the room to tell her that the outside world is no longer inhabitable and that he bought her in to his bunker to save her life.

And that's all that we know. It's this uncertainty and the unknown that casts a lurking shadow across the rest of the film as we, along with Michelle, try to put together exactly what's going on. There's another survivor in the shelter named Emmet (John Gallagher) who seems more trustworthy than Howard and is also convinced that somethings happened, but none of them are sure of just what it is. A few theories are thrown out there regarding Russians, aliens or apocalypse. Throughout the film we're left attempting to figure out exactly what's happened, but we do know that somethings happened and whatever's out there is keeping them trapped inside.

But as threatening as whatever's outside is, our characters never seem that much safer inside with John Goodman's Howard posing an ever looming threat. He's similar to other great villains like Kathy Bates in Misery, with his unhinged nature making him both unpredictable and dangerous, constantly switching in to fits of rage every time one of the other characters talks out of place. And just like whatever has happened outside, throughout the film we're constantly trying to piece together just who he is and whether he was really just trying to save Michelle or if he had some other reason for taking her out from that car wreck.

Whilst Michelle is held in the bunker against her will, she never for one moment becomes a passive victim. She is constantly using her survival instinct and being resourceful to gain an understanding of what's going on and figure out a way that she can get out of there.

Further distinguishing itself from its predecessor, 10 Cloverfield Lane does not use any shaky cam throughout the film. Instead Dan Trachtenberg favours a more suspenseful style of shooting that follows from Michelle's perspective whilst better emphasising the often claustrophobic setting of the film.

It's a thrilling premise that's executed in an unsettling way, trapping us within the same uncertainty and paranoia as our main character. Whilst we don't know exactly what we're supposed to fear, we know that whether it's the monster outside or the monster within, there is constant danger looming.

Okay. Now that you've forgotten about it we can talk about 10 Cloverfield Lane - a thriller/mystery that is phenomenally acted. I was on the edge of my seat the entire movie wondering what events would unfold, a roller coaster for sure. I felt the ending was weak, but everything leading up to it was phenomenal.

Very much hoping they continue this story.

Very suspensive movie, very unpredictable. This is a fine example how to make a good movie with only 3 characters lol. Anyway the movie leaves you hanging and waiting for a sequel at the end.

A mix of thriller, sci-fi, horror, and drama, 10 Cloverfield Lane also works in some moments of comedy to lighten an incredibly bleak mood. Director Dan Trachtenberg does a great job here creating tension and letting it build to a very good pay-off. As mentioned, Goodman is phenomenal with an intense and entirely gripping performance that plays very well into the air of mystery the film possesses. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is great here and John Gallagher Jr was also quite good. The film is a very compelling and thought-provoking one, lending itself greatly to further study as to character motivations and what all is really going on throughout the film. Some have criticized the ending, but I really am a fan. I thought it was a thrilling end to a thrilling film. Overall, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a very good film that has some filler and is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it still a good thriller that really gets the gears in the brain turning. Thanks in no small part to one of the most impressive directorial debuts in recent memory, a truly engrossing mystery at the center of all things, and what could quite feasibly be John Goodman's best onscreen role since "Walter Sobchak," "10 Cloverfield Lane" places yet another clear tick mark in the "W" column for producer J.J. A lot of the drama takes place in a bunker that is sheltering three people from an unknown outside terror which, according to the viewpoint of one of the three- Michelle, may not exist. The actors are great and the claustrophobic feel in the bunker is well utilised enabling the suspense and tension to build effectively. In fact, so good are the scenes within the bunker at questioning the motives of John Goodman's character that one almost forgets to consider whether the terror they are hiding from is real or not. Only when the action moves outside does one immediately guess what the truth of the situation is. The score and the terrific sound effectively jangle the nerves throughout contributing to a very impressive feature film debut by director Dan Trachtenberg. The ending leaves some room for a sequel which, in the event, could be as different from this film as this one is from ‘Cloverfield’. Expand

Adds a new perspective to the original film yet it retained the mystery.

Initially it was called 'The Cellar', but later it became spin-off to 'Cloverfield'. It was a regular type screen narration, unlike the first film as a found footage style. But if you the original film fan, especially monster film fan, you might end in a disappointment. Because it was a psychological-thriller-mystery than the sci-fi-action-adventure.

Only the final act determines where and how it actually connects to the Cloverfield universe, yet not very evident other than the clue the title had given and the filmmakers insisted that is indeed from the same franchise. Because I felt, it was very close to other alien invasion films like 'Skyline' and 'Battle LA' or even the latest 'The 5th Wave' than the 'Cloverfield'.

I surely enjoyed this film, like an another crazy bunker hideout theme and something which is quite similar to the recent 'Room'. Since they have revealed its association with the 'Cloverfield', I expected different kind which was actually insanely misled everybody. If there won't be a sequel, then the link between the two films are unnecessary, so I'm waiting for that. But still a very good film without those mix-ups. And I recommend you all to consider it as a one-off film in order to have a great watching experience.

Another limited cast film with barely a four characters in it and shot in a single location that cost just $15m, but earned in multiple folds. All the credit goes to the marketing tactics to tie it up with the 2008 blockbuster. It would have also done great independently, in the end everybody, including fans and filmmakers are happy for what it is now.

The suspense was so good, but it was carried out for too long. The third act picked up its pace like hell which was obviously anticipated since 'Cloverfield' hooked to it. When everybody was thinking of monsters, it is going to delivers differently and that's how the film fairs.

7.5/10

What a fantastic movie! 10 Cloverfield Lane delivers, big time. It is one of the best thrillers to come out of Hollywood in awhile.

This movie along with Ex_Machina are leading the charge in the reemergence of the slow burn Hitchcockian thriller. It's great to see this kind of film to come back into the fore.

It gets very tense throughout the course of this movie. There is a brilliant scene at a dinner table where two characters laughing and joking around with one another ratchets up the tension instead of relieving you of it. How many movies can you say have done that?

All the performances are superb. There are lots and lots of closeups of a characters face and all of the actors (but mostly Mary Elizabeth Winstead), have to convey many thoughts and feelings to the audience with just their facial movements. The standout performance though is John Goodman's, he is a very nuanced character who's lumbering presence is felt even when he is not onscreen.

This is a top notch thriller, the kind I would like to see more of in the coming years. I also hope there is a third installment in this "case file" movie franchise, because: so far, so great!

WhenIt seems that everything JJ Abrams touches is gold. The rebooted Star Trek movies and the Force Awakens have shown us the best Sci-Fi in movies. He's been described as a new Spielberg and that definitely isn't an understatement. When Spielberg is gone we'll have an old JJ to fill his seat in the Oscars. This film caught my interest not from the low budget soon to be critically acclaimed look of it but from the attractiveness of Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She certainly deserves to be top tier star but should she be? We would lose that feeling of uniqueness about her and would no longer feel like a well kept secret. And in a way that goes for the future of the franchise as well. The end seems to be going in a direction that could lose the mystery and identity of the best parts of this film. JJ said he has a "very cool idea" in mind for a future title.Should it be a higher budget grandiose direct sequel or something contained and thought-provoking like this? I have to go with the latter. But unless it's something we have not seen before in the Cloverfield Universe, I have doubts that the hypothetical next movie could affect us in such a good way again. Maybe we've seen all it's tricks. In this rare situation, we'll just have to take his word for it.
P.S. I found it fun to imagine this movie takes place in the DC movie universe :)

Background: I have seen the slightly related Cloverfield film. That film was poor and not worth your time, despite what critics may say.

Pros:
(1) It's a great thriller, claustrophobic and filled with questions.

(2) Great acting from the two main actors.

Cons: The bit at the end seemed like a re-shoot done after the main filming was completed, just so the company can put the 'Cloverfield' word in the film's name and linked it with the earlier film. Without this bit, the film would have gotten a 5/5 from me. Shame!

Who would think the film is great? All adults.
Who would think the film is only so-so? No one
Who would think the film is lousy? No one.

Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). It's worth it to watch it in the cinemas.

Eschewing the "found footage" style of the previous film, this is instead, a more traditionally shot psychological thriller and one of the better ones I've seen in a long time. With great pacing, fantastic acting, and a simple but well explored story I found myself on the edge of my seat throughout. The film manages to bring tension to simple scenes and explores our perceptions of others, our ability to trust, etc. multiple times. You'll find yourself questioning everything and repeatedly changing your mind as you watch this film, not knowing what to believe.

So far this is my favourite film of 2016, and I've seen pretty much everything that's come out this year so it's up against some stiff competition.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "Produced by JJ Abrams" is generally all it takes to get my ass in a theater seat these days and I rushed in to see 10 Cloverfield Lane as quick as I could and I was not disappointed. We all know that this film really came out of nowhere a couple months ago when the film was revealed only 2 months before it came out.

Some people may find this film to be slow but I felt that it went by so fast. This film is 103 minutes and when it was over it felt like 50 minutes had past. Key men behind the first film returned as producers in Abrams, Drew Goddard and the director of the first film Matt Reeves. Rookie filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg deserves a pat on the back after a great debut and I'm sure we will be hearing that name again on some more big productions. The cast was so great! John Goodman is outstanding. I honestly feel like there is no one who could have pulled off the role of Howard the way he did. Its nice to see him in a mainstream film because he is such a talented guy and we don't seem to see as much of him anymore. Goodman's character is so mysterious and you really never know whether he's a good guy or a bad guy. I think that Mary Elizabeth Winstead did not reach Goodman's level but she was very good as well and is probably the best I have seen from her so far in her career. Then you have John Gallagher Jr. who was strong and likeable as well.

Most of this movie has a very independent feel through the first 2 acts and I was very fine with that and the first two acts are the high points of the film. With JJ involved it definitely feels similar to the "Hatch" in Lost which I love. There are so many tense moments where you are so engaged and I found myself attached to Winstead's character Michelle. You are really rooting for her the whole way through.

The third act took me out of the story just slightly when the monsters finally show up because it is just such a shift into a whole different type of danger. I still thought the monsters looked good and they were pretty scary while they were around. I recommend that this film be viewed in the theater just so you can get the experience of seeing the monsters on the big screen.

I was fine with the ending too, which was obviously a huge cliff hanger and as long as we get another movie I'm 100% fine with it. I would not rule out the fact that we are seeing another Cloverfield film that starts up right where the last one left off. I was not be shocked by an announcement of another movie before the end of 2016. I'll have my fingers crossed.

This is a film that keeps you guessing on how things may play out and who is telling the truth. All the actors do a amazing job and Jon Goodman stands out from the rest as this very hard to figure out character, You are always trying to guess what his intentions are. This movie isn't "Scary" like some may think, It'll have you on the edge of your seat but more in suspense and not for being terrified. This film also doesn't much of a tie to the original Cloverfield so keep that in mind. But I found this film amazing, It let's you try and figure out things for yourself and has tons of build up for a ending that feels mostly worth it. There isnt any shaky cam for the most part, and the acting is absolutely fantastic, especially from John Goodman. He plays the part of the average Redditor who has planned for the end of the world for the majority of his life. There was not a single moment in the entire film (Other than the abismal ending) that i was not glued to the screen. I was however a little disappointing that the bunker was not further underground. The poster made it seem like the thing was kilometers below the surface, but when i think of it that would have been overkill.

Over all i rate this film a 7/10. I take one point off for the missing jigsaw piece, one point off for not being able to see them complete the game of monopoly over the 3 years they were down there, and one point off for the alien vagina spaceship that combusted on contact with whiskey. Also i add one point for just being so much better than all the other crap that has come out recently. So actually its an 8/10.

Seeing the trailer the film looked odd, as it was a sequel to a found-footage disaster movie that was set in one location amongst only 3 characters. 10 Cloverfield Lane is tensely confining, well-written, and takes the franchise in a totally different direction. That being said this film could have been great if it had not been part of the cloverfield franchise, however it also did well within that universe.

The film is very tense, similar to last year’s Room, in that it’s very confining and isolated. The film benefits from good performances all around, but most notably that of John Goodman who plays the sympathetic yet deranged Howard. Goodman’s cold yet soft performance helps build tension as the character clearly controls the situation, but is unpredictable and often erratic. With a brilliantly dark and somewhat nightmarish tone, the film plays out like a human version of mice in a rigged maze.

The story in the film is unpredictable and very well written, most likely due to the fact that “Whiplash” writer and director Damien Chazelle co-wrote the script. The story unfolds with one twist after another, with each twist bigger than the last, until the film builds into its climax perfectly. Another element that was very well done was the character development, as each character is well-rounded, and given a good arc. With a good story and great characters 10 Cloverfield Lane is a well-written sequel to Cloverfield, that even improves upon its predecessor.

One thing to note, while it may seem obvious, 10 Cloverfield Lane is very different from Cloverfield. Where Cloverfield was a found-footage disaster film with a huge scope, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a very confined traditionally shot thriller about people trapped in a bunker. That being said fans of the original may not be as fond of 10 Cloverfield Lane, whereas some who disliked Cloverfield may enjoy 10 Cloverfield Lane. However, they are very different films, with 10 Cloverfield Lane more focused on character development, and drama.
In the end, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a well crafted thriller, that delivers, mostly due to great writing. The film is very tense, well-acted, well-written,unpredictable, and very different from its predecessor in size and scope. The end result is a great film that is in many ways better than the original Cloverfield, because of the effort and care of the people making it. For those that love tense thrillers, or just in general great films, this film will surely entertain.
