As long as you dont expect a riveting simulation or some epic WWI tale, Wings of War is an entertaining, albeit arcade, flight combat game with lots of action spread across a massive campaign with plenty of unique missions, both ground and air.
-
The physics are arcadey but work. Youll notice the planes breaking in the order you would expect them to. The environments are pretty and the draw distance is extremely impressive.
-
A simple but lengthy and often exciting single-player experience that's a real credit to the world of budget-priced games.
-
It is just a basic old school shooter. The graphics are decent at best and you are basically getting what you paid for.
-
The campaign mode is outstanding and provides quite a few hours of fun and mayhem. Who can resist fun and mayhem? The lack of multiplayer severely hurts this title for me, but the cost helps ease some of the pain.
-
One of the downsides that I thought took away from the game was the lack of a story in the game. So you really never get that connection in the game that really makes you want to go all the way through the game.
-
Despite some inane gameplay features, the arcade-style flying and fighting is very good.
-
A pleasant surprise. Whilst not without its flaws, (some features, or lack thereof, give away the games obviously low production values) Wings provides a decent-looking arcade flight sim which, if sampled for small periods at regular intervals, can actually prove very enjoyable.
-
The Campaign mode offers solid gameplay, and the open-ended nature of the main and side missions does allow for a little more replay ability than one would first think from looking at the box.
-
The missions are plentiful but many of them become repetitive but its the jerky flight controls that will frustrate gamers the most.
-
The AI doesn't put up too much of a fight in Wings of War.
-
While the controls need tweaking, and the pace of the game slowed at times, the missions and overall experience of flying these planes held some fun to it.
-
Game InformerThe lack of multiplayer on or offline seems truly misguided. The occasional challenging dogfight and the thrill of the open countryside below may entertain for awhile, but if I were you, I'd just go beat "Crimson Skies" again. [Nov 2004, p.163]
-
The real failing here is the unfamiliarity and limited appeal of WWI and the lack of Live support, but if the yearn to pull-on the leather cap and goggles and throw the scarf around your neck strikes, by all means hop in and give her a whirl.
-
A fairly ordinary game with fairly ordinary gameplay.
-
A must have at such a cheap price. The free-form game play allowing you to take bonus missions whenever you feel like it and the wide variation of missions makes this game too big to finish on just a rent.
-
Overall the game offers an in-depth experience with plenty of missions and lots of action to keep all the wannabe Biggles fans out there happy. So slap on your goggles, start your engines and take to the sky for some high flying action, Wings of War proves to be a rip-roaring ride in the skies.
-
Wings of War works very much on the pick up and play philosophy employed in Crimson Skies and while it doesn't have the polish and the online play, its still a moderately solid game.
-
Sure there are things I would have changed, but on its own the mojo breaks through the clouds. WOW attains nice little tilt on the mojo for its graphical touches and old war inspired fighter planes.

Official Xbox MagazineIt's a game you'll have fun with for a while...until your brain starts to hurt from the randomness of it all. [Dec 2004, p.84]
-
GMR MagazineEach of the 19 planes is drawn in astounding detail, but unfortunately, for all the modeled damage and intricate cockpits, the game physics are a little too arcadey. [Dec 2004, p.133]
-
For some it will become too repetitive, as you can only shoot down so many opponents or destroy so many targets before it all becomes a little boring.
-
BoomtownThe most frustrating thing I found with it was an autosave that occurred just as I destroyed the engine on my plane right at the end of the first mission.
-
AceGamezThere's something here for the arcade action gamers and the World War One enthusiasts alike, what with the authenticity and detailed planes combined with decent control options.
-
The game's biggest weakness is the lack of multi-player options. There is no split-screen dogfighting or the Xbox Live online battles that made its competitor "Crimson Skies" so compelling.
-
Instant action mode is like getting bonked on the head by five people while trying to find your bearings and doesn't really even help you learn to fly.
-
Xbox Nation MagazinePack up this game's troubles in your old kit bag and head for the glorious Live-enabled "Crimson Skies" instead. [Nov 2004, p.96]
-
Though you can certainly do worse than Wings of War at its budget price point, the gameplay ultimately has more holes than the Red Barons adversaries.
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyThis budget-priced shooting gallery would be more thrilling if your plane didn't control like a garbage truck sliding across ice. [Dec 2004, p.170]
