Play MagazineThe control is simple yet fun and the tracks, consistently impressive. [Aug 2003, p.75]
-
Although hardly original (it's "Jeremy McGrath" with a next-gen facelift), SX Superstar is a well-built arcade bike racer with pretty-enough graphics and the trademark dead-on Climax control.
-
There's plenty to do in SX Superstar, but the problems lie in the gameplay mechanics--such as the trick system and camera--which could've used a little more tweaking.
-
Game InformerIt doesn't excel at anything. [Aug 2003, p.99]
-
SX Superstar isn't a horrible motocross game. It isn't a great one either, or even above average. It will find itself forever in the middle, a so-so effort from Acclaim.
-
SX Superstar works hard to keep gamers interested well beyond the first racing season but fails to maintain the fun and excitement of motocross racing due to its glaring faults.
-
Cheat Code CentralThe engines are thick sounding and correlate perfectly with the controls. You can hear the differences between the sounds of the various models. The tunes are hard rocking and laced with that heavy-metal-thunder attitude.
-
At its worst, it's a frustrating exercise in button manipulation that makes you want to take up knitting.
-
What can you say about yet another extreme dirt biking game? You can say they have now made one too many. Leave this one in the dust.
-
Xbox Nation MagazineSomething that's competent, but nonetheless the racing-game equivalent of shaved, unflavored ice served in a wooden bowl. [Oct/Nov 2003, p.87]
-
GMR MagazineSpartan in its design and curiously devoid of such necessities as customizable bikes or the option to change the controller configurations, Superstar can barely keep pace with the middle of the pack. [Sept 2003, p.67]
-
The lasting appeal is weak with the lack of a user's bike and persona. You are stuck with the riders they feed you. No career modes no create a bike; no create a track, no Xbox live play, and no real options other than the norm.
-
Improving your rider's living conditions aside, there's nothing here that hasn't been done countless times before.
-
Strip away the gimmick and you are left with a generic arcade racer with a poor physics model and terribly flawed trick system.
-
Official Xbox MagazineThe graphics look like polished PSOne visuals, the physics are awful, the trick system is one of the worst I've ever seen in an extreme sports game, and the audio is only saved by a semi-decent soundtrack. [Sept 2003, p.83]
-
While the intentions were good, the actual execution is a foul mess.
-
The joke of a campaign mode, horrid controls, laughable graphics, and decent soundtrack all mush together to make one hell of a beer coaster.
