Official Xbox MagazineThis genre still has potential, but Spikeout just doesn't tap it. [June 2005, p.80]

TotalGames.netIf you're a huge Dreamcast or Sega fan then the online side of Battle Street may warrant a rent. But, for the other 99.9% of Xbox gamers, we'd say leave the past in the past.

Edge MagazineLevels feature numerous boss battles and a stream of identikit foot soldiers, but merrily send the player back to square one when their lone life is over and make the singleplayer story mode an agonising exercise in self-abuse. [June 2005, p.88]
-
In the end, it feels more like an after pub game than one that you'd spend a whole summer mastering. Simple, easy and ultimately boring, you should pick it up for a fiver if you can.
-
The environments that you'll be fighting through are your typical urban fare, and they all look bland and devoid of any life. The character models are pretty blocky, and the fighting moves you'll see all look very stiff.
-
games(TM)We wanted to like Spikeout, we really did, but less than a day of enduring what the game had to 'offer' and having so many flaws thrown in our faces was more than enough to convince us never to play it again. [June 2005, p.115]

Sega dropped the ball on this one. Don't touch it unless you need to cure insomnia, and even then, there are ways that are more readily available and are better for your health.
-
Do yourself a favor. Take that money and go buy an old Sega Genesis and a copy of Streets of Rage. You'll spend less money, and have a much better time. Honest.
-
Had Sega stuck to its rumoured plan of releasing this on the Dreamcast five years ago, we'd probably have given it a more favourable write up.
