  1. Visually, it is incredible. The game play is solid and makes this game worth more than it’s weight in platinum.
  2. A fantastic game that offers dual play modes, challenging puzzles, a progressive character development system, and balanced gameplay that is great for gamers of all skills and ages.

This game is, simply put, brilliant. The music is intoxicating, the locales magical and the overall vibe decidedly dreamy. [Dec 2003, p.77]

Expect some of the coolest levels out there, a slew of amazing characters, and something lacking from many games today: a sense of humor.
  5. The contrasting abilities of Sphinx and the Mummy make this a true two character game and not simply the same character with a different model and textures.

A fairly well balanced title that, like "Zelda," serves up a semi-non-linear experience complete with huge worlds to explore, difficult and satisfying puzzles, entertaining weapon and item advancements, and more, and it's all very much on the same epic scale as Nintendo's franchise.
  7. A beautiful game and with hardly ever any slow downs. The character design is this game’s strong part. The characters are something of a hybrid between Disney and Jim Hennson.

From a graphics standpoint, Sphinx looks incredible. [Apr 2004, p.9]
  9. Strikes a great balance between its fantasy and Egyptian-history-based elements to create a world that is rich with character, color, and originality, and its unique method of puzzle-solving makes it an easy recommendation to any fan of the genre.
  10. Solidly designed, solidly programmed, very pretty, and about as close to "Zelda" as PS2 and Xbox will ever get. This one deserves to be a sleeper hit.
  11. The controls aren't entirely perfect, but they function well enough to get players through the game without wanting to quit.

Satisfying, challenging, and more importantly, fun. [Jan 2004, p.80]
  13. An exceptionally well made game that smacks of style and polish.

A thoroughly humorous and entertaining game with a few rough edges. Camera problems and a lack of voiceover acting are the only real flaws.
  15. 75
A schizophrenic but enjoyable combination of gameplay styles, and it's worth slogging through the solid Sphinx segments to savor the Mummy magic.
  16. With such a huge plot and many, many puzzles to solve, this game should take an experience gamer quite some time to finish if they don’t deviate from the main story.

Getting the Mummy burnt, shocked, and sliced makes for both fun and funny gameplay. Watching Sphinx do double-jumps and sword strokes, on the other hand, fills me with "eh." [Dec 2003, p.204]

Elementary use of math reveals that a mediocre Sphinx game combined with an excellent Cursed Mummy game averages out to a very solid and enjoyable Sphinx/Mummy hybrid. [Mar 2004, p.91]

While Sphinx's adventures are rather average and play very similarly to "Starfox Adventures" and the Zelda games, the Mummy levels are a different matter - stealth and laughs abound in equal measures and there are some extremely clever puzzles that fully exploit the Mummy's undead status. [Mar 2004, p.119]

It's certainly slick and professionally done, and those who find platformers to be their favourite genre will find this very enjoyable. However, if you like your gaming to be different then all you'll get from this is a distinct feeling of deja vu.
  21. Attempts to be a platform game heavy on the puzzles, but it's really just a boring platform game. It's too bad it's a video game and not a slide show, because playing the game is almost painfully boring at times despite the graphics.

The controls are clunky, the environments often are empty and bland, the game seems like it was rushed in many places, the plot is boring and uninspired and difficult to follow, the Sphinx parts aren’t too bad but the Mummy sections are often infuriating due to the awkward controls and ill conceived stealth sections. There are horrendous platforming segments that seem to never have been play tested because they are difficult because of bad design and not the inherent platforming itself. The enemy design wasn’t very inspired and left much to be desired. The NPCs were imaginative and showed artistic flair but not enough to elevate a very underwhelming game riddled with many flaws that’s borderline unplayable in 2022. Full Review »
