Stranger's Wrath is insidious. Few games have so thoroughly hooked me and absolutely compelled me to play for way too many hours while neglecting all other responsibilities. It offers such a mix of modern game genres that pretty much everybody will find something to love and many, like myself, will find a lot to love.
  2. Quite possibly the best single player experience available on the Xbox. Outstripping even the mighty "Halo," it is fresh, unique, and unparalleled in its innovation of the genre.
  3. While Stranger's Wrath doesn't really break new ground it does present players with a much different Oddworld experience then we've become used to. The way in which the gameplay blurs the various genres it pulls from is a nice touch that keeps things from becoming too straight forward.
  4. What we have here is one of those "high concept", innovative story driven shooters like "The Chronicles of Riddick" or the criminally underrated "Breakdown" that works perfectly as not only a video game, but a thrilling trip to a wonderfully fleshed out visual world that's an absolute knockout to run around and do things in.
  5. Don't let it fool you though; the game isn't very child friendly at all. The later levels become extremely difficult and might require having to be replayed over and over which also helps extend the already lengthy playtime encountered.
  6. A real change from the rest of the Oddworld games, but a welcome one. Here's hoping the Stranger turns up in future Oddworld games.
  7. If you're gonna have odd features, make them essential... A good game, but a slightly wasted opportunity.

I missed this gem over the years, until recently when I read the high standard of reviews posted, so only just got it a couple of weeks ago I missed this gem over the years, until recently when I read the high standard of reviews posted, so only just got it a couple of weeks ago second hand. Excellent choice and catapulted into the top echellon of my Xbox games choice. I rate it the 3rd best shooter on the box behind HalfLife and Halo. But there is very little between them really as this like them, is an exceptional game. Its a game like Conker, in that it has some way cool humour delivered throughout the whole game. The chickens all talk like Yokels hahaha I get it. The other similiarity to Conker is that halfway through, the game really picks up/changes pace in accordance with the story development. I like that about a game, I mean its just pure cockiness. To keep the kick arse action up your sleeve, then once a player has reached a certain level the game jumps out and says "you aint seen nothing yet, we are gonna take what ya learnt so far and BOOM just bang it home on ya butt" Thats not to say the first half of the game isnt enjoyable, its mighty fun bagging baddies, its just this game really brought it home for me. Great little story, great FPS action which differs from the norm machine gun, hand granade fare we've been delivered with. A must own. Expand

I remember seeing information about this game before it came out that got me excited.
I'd played Abe's Odyssey and Munch's Odyssey, and I enjoyed both; They put you in interesting, immersive (though fairly linear) environments where you feel a strange familiarity with foreign creatures, in a sense commenting on our own connection with nature. So when I saw they were making more of a shooter, I was pretty excited; These developers have a sense of grittiness that's relatable, so I was curious to see how that would turn out in an outlaw-type protagonist.
Personally I am a fan of platformer / shooter games, like Ratchet and Clank.
However, this title unfortunately didn't feel quite like an organically pointed experience like the other Oddworld titles I played, though I never did finish this game.
My main issue with it is that it seemed to get a bit repetitive to me, which was strange considering the mechanics weren't exactly stale. I think it was a mix of controls being just short of precise, without much guiding the way in terms of incentive for side questing, leading to a little bit too linear of a progression for me.
That said, it is still an Oddworld game so the characters still have their own unique charm.
Still recommended for any fans of the series, though I'd recommend starting with a different game if you haven't tried an Oddworld game yet.
