The new dunks and animations look spectacular and really light up your TV screen.
-
The Legends Tournament alone is reason to own NBA Jam.
-
"NBA Street" has a better all-around arcade-style game, but if all you care about are big dunks and big points, NBA Jam will deliver you to highlight heaven.
-
TotalGames.netEven with the addition of downloadable content via Live (more than likely roster updates), and some inventive cheat modes that can be acquired such as big heads, big feet and various gameplay enhancing modes, NBA Jam is unlikely to be at the top on anyone's shopping list.
-
As a stand-alone game, NBA Jam is definitely fun to play, but it lacks the gameplay depth of pretty much every other major basketball title on the market, arcade or otherwise.
-
The gameplay still remains as rambunctious as ever, but the available modes of play are definitely lacking.
-
I don't think it has quite enough bells and whistles to dethrone "NBA Street," but if you loved Jam back in the day, you will find a lot to like in this incarnation.
-
The game is fun for a while, and definitely worth a rental if you're going to play against some friends, but if ever a game and it's weak AI called for online play, it was this one.
-
If you still want to feel that retro-love pick up NBA Jam, but don't expect to be blown away by its features or anything new, for there is truly a lack of both (except in terms of dunks? there will always be lots of dunks).
-
Play MagazineThe game isn't perfect. For starters, the AI could've been more challenging - I was able to break it down fairly easily and score at will. [Nov 2003, p.105]
-
Game InformerFrom a gameplay perpective, NBA Jam doesn't hold a candle to "NBA Street." [Nov 2003, p.171]
-
Official Xbox MagazineCompared to this new generation of arcade hoopsters, Jam feels unambitious and uninvolving. [Dec 2003, p.146]
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyWhile this latest version succeeds in providing a polished, fast-paced, fun game of over-the-top 3-on-3 hoops, it doesn't really offer anything we haven't seen before. [Dec 2003, p.191]
-
Online play might have taken NBA Jam off the "rent for nostalgia" list and put it on the "must-have" list. As is, there are better basketball alternatives - several of them.
-
Xbox Nation MagazineIt simply can't contend with the 400-pound gorilla that is Electronic Arts' "NBA Street." [Dec/Jan 2004, p.85]
-
games(TM)The slightly clumsy controls and overly enthusiastic (read: nearly unbeatable) AI, plus with a new Hot Spot system that feels very random, makes the whole game feel rather lopsided and not much fun. [Dec 2003, p.125]
-
What ultimately makes or breaks NBA Jam is its computer AI, which is every bit as nasty and unfair as previous games.
